hey there boys and girls youtube world hey duff dog and i are going to show you my studebaker that i just was gifted the reason i say was gifted because nobody in their right mind would give money for this thing well i shouldn't say that hopefully we can get it running and somebody will give me money otherwise i'm gonna have to pay somebody to get out of my yard thanks for that karsten friend of mine had this he offered it to me for a hundred bucks i politely declined and then i did a favor for him picked him up that 59 plymouth wagon and his way of saying thank you for me buying that car for him he paid me for the car but for going to the auction standing around all day and hauling that car back here just to give me this thing what a deal it's got a flathead six i don't know it's like a forty nine or fifty something like that we don't know it's got air conditioning she's high class close that up oh she's a rotten uh i guess somebody must have blasted it started doing bodywork on it um if you're an amateur bodywork er person bondo does not fix rust just so you know it's got suicide rear doors kind of a neat steering wheel kind of a neat hood ornament i don't know if that's for the studebaker maybe probably there's a few of them in there the dash got some wood grain on it still pretty hideous yeah right wow the door panels are actually pretty respectable don't mind the wind here uh that carpet's definitely add-on maybe not i don't know guys the floors ain't even all that bad must have been a black car or a dark green i'm already falling in love with this thing she's a champion i don't know what that means if it's high class oh it's got the keys yep that was the deal of the century 69 056 miles on her pretty low mileage what is that like a alligator skin that's classy oh they got the chrome in between the handles duffy come check this thing out it's great he's he's not impressed with the studebaker looks like we got some other parts back here again more rust fixed with bondo hey look i'm gonna have to keep those door handles if we gotta give it away fit on the fridge here's the grill cute little slim bumper pocketed coil spring cushion so must have had some spring issues they parked it who knows where's all the ashtrays oh there they are there they are you gotta have like nine ashtrays and the cars back in there's probably some in the door to boot because everybody smoked back then we get in the trunk too got kind of that ugly wrap around their window never been a fan of those oh we don't need the key it's got taillights meth glove some meth ingredients what do these look like hmm not ugly as tail lights not that great she's a little rotten around there factory jack look at that wing nut that's a monstrosity right there that's a that's a good deal what is that kind of dome light in the trunk oh studebaker was a hot ticket look at this just it's like chad did the body work on this thing too just smear some mud on it and walk away it'll take care of itself if you leave it sit long enough probably was a pretty decent car when they stripped all the paint off oh boy oh bumpers in the way oh been off the road since 76. so uh 44 years of sitting around not bad that carpet must have been factory hmm oh shoot what is that is that od is that for overdrive dd i don't know designated driver this thing might have overdrive i don't know it's got a heater appears to have had a radio it's no longer there must have taken it in for all the services there's one there the one down there took her right down to the lead at all the seams a little bit more bondo on this side but the rust doesn't go up quite as high four lug wheels yeah good luck finding any of those or tires to fit them maybe they're 15s maybe we'll get tires on them other 15s we can find tires dual air conditioning really other than the suicide door there's not much going on here kind of a hideous peak on the fender what we got we got under here allegedly this thing was overhauled right before they parked it yeah right ran when parked is alive but overhauled before you parked it highly unlikely we did grab the fan and it turns over so we got a chance if we do need any parts we're screwed because i don't have any suit maker parts around must have been an oliver john deere fan all that green oil bath air cleaner cute little intake and carburetor i wonder if it's got i think it does have overdrive how are we gonna find out without driving it i think that's the overdrive relay right there on the firewall seems like i remember i cannot see nothing on the transmission but i do see heater hoses coming back here so unless they had the rear heat she's luxury so there you have it my not so free studebaker it was a day of my life i wish i'll have back plus all the days i'll spend trying to get it running see what happens drag her inside see if you can't get it running [Music] ah got her skidded in with the bobcat four flat tires stuff he didn't want to help steer so that was fun flathead six three on the tree that's about all i know and it turns over let's throw battery oh it's got keys too so it should run what are the odds that doesn't come crashing on my head it's got a battery in it and a cable and three quarter because one end appears to be stuck on the battery it's six volt so we're going to hook it up to 12. before we even get started here just go ahead and click like down at the bottom no i'm not going to oil the cylinders or rebuild the carburetor or change the oil i'll check it that's about it so we'll get your panel on these all up in a bunch about how i'm treating this thing because it's a studebaker it's it's the bottom of the barrel to baker so if you want this thing hit me up it could be a real good deal yeah that one appears to be going to the engine block so we'll call that the ground [Music] [Applause] hey let's clean that battery cable end up first alright one more cable to go [Music] so batteries far too big because it's got the extra six volts and whatnot but it's not going anywhere see if it cranks over oh it's got a cell mite down there on the starter easy to get we can one man band this duff some zero melt [Music] i guess the fan's on and it's turning real fast should probably get that turned off let's just go ahead and unplug those fan motors make sure you leave yourself plenty of room so you can splice them back together hopefully that was the right wire so the key just turns on it doesn't have a crank position so there must be a button somewhere not really sure we're going to fix that though add my own button all right i got that i'm a loser don't have any friends switch hooked up see if she turns over okay only one layer on the solenoid this should be easy so we don't appear to be getting voltage at the solenoid or the solenoid's bad or my switch is bad so we're just gonna bypass everything this little piece of yellow 14 gauge wire gets the ends are stripped off real handy tool you can make for almost nothing well i guess we're gonna have to get serious and get a tool out the checks are voltage cause i tried bypassing it all it's still not working got my power probe 3 here don't buy one of these because then everybody all of a sudden think you know what you're doing they are pretty handy though power i wonder if that six volt solenoid just is not happy with 12 volts or with negative ground not really sure i think what i'm gonna do is take the solenoid off either just bypass it completely or wire a different one in there that's 12 volt wish i had one that i knew worked but you know i don't so here's our starter it's a it's a toledo ohio special i don't know auto something or other it's for an automobile there's our solenoid that's kind of mounted to it like a gm but kind of a external solenoid like ford uses i tried jumping a wire from where the battery cable was hooked up that's the one i took off to here and that should have engaged it but it didn't so now we're gonna do [Music] let's hook this battery cable up just like so ah nothing right i'm just going to tap it to that starter post see what happens oh i got the starter turning over it didn't sound like it had much compression yeah flatheads are not my friend lately we're not gonna get a compression tester out don't get excited i got one right here that's right i'm gonna get crazy and even blow all the crud out around the spark plugs before i pull them out perfect maybe we'll even put some penetrating oil down there this thing's as fresh as they say those plugs should look like brand new why that was so tight for cheese spark plugs definitely look like it's been run ow good thing i had my helmet on well they're not all rusty at least there's about a 10 chance that we don't have valve stuck on at least two cylinders well we're two for two on flathead sixes having one cylinder with compression one out of six is not good i'd like to say that ain't bad but cut back to the last flathead six we'll move that one that's what i'm gonna do this time i'll soak them a little bit longer just for you guys yeah i guess we're pulling the head off [Music] great [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] uh [Music] do [Music] all right so we got her head off sure enough yeah she's got a little bit of a ridge there not much according to that mark on the piston right there she's 30 over is that the studebaker s on there these ones don't have it i don't see a lot of valves that are open so what's going on here interesting yeah look at that you can still see the cross hatching in the cylinders she's a good one but it was run for a little bit a little carbon at the top of a couple of these cylinders that one has like none at all which valves are sticking this one yep that one oh what did that cylinder not have any compression i only got one stuck back there so number five one and two all right let's put some zapo on all right everybody gets mad now when i tap on valves hey are they all moving so i think that's why we weren't getting compression is because a lot of them are closing they're just not closing fast enough they're kind of sticky sticky valves there you go so we're losing compression there i've got a couple that are kind of hanging open but most of them are actually doing pretty well [Music] you can see how slow that number five is settling down back there there again look at how slow that one's going back down in the number four cylinder same thing on the number five real slow i'm sure it didn't help on all the valves that were open all these years that spring on the valve being pulled tight lost a lot of bit of a lot of it's uh k factor is that we call that engineering just real light taps in the center of the valve and a whole bunch of oil these number one and two intakes are being real fatherless children so i let these valves soak for about six hours while we rode around on the tractor and hauled some kern and had an epiphany while i was out there thinking maybe that six volt solenoid needs to be grounded guess what fixed it you hook a six volt starter off at 12 volts they really zing and it looks like it appears all the valves are moving as well and everybody says this valve loosening tool doesn't work [Music] we're ready to clean it up get some aerosol head gasket throw our back together spark and fuel now we got to go find the aerosol head gasket oh we should probably clean up the bottom of the head too right there's the key permatex copper spray a gasket yep aerosol gasket in a can well now let's see we got compression real good i'd say that's about 110 to 115 so we're within spec all the way across the board see we got spark we're not gonna even check the points we're just gonna zing it over which side goes to the ignition here's the wire coming from the distributor so let's hook our clip up to the positive side the rotor looks like new what are the odds the old points work not very good but i'm gonna try anyway yep i'm gonna have to clean up some points imagine that so the engine's turned over to where the points are closed we got our sandpaper so usually just pry those points open with a screwdriver slide my sandpaper in there clean it up a bit now let's flick them manually see if they spark oh yeah will it spark when we turn it over though of course not all kinds of spark i don't even think we gotta clean that rotor up oh man pretty good but we'll do the old rebuild quick scrape that calcium off the contacts slide that back on make sure to hook our coil wire back up to the distributor i forgot that put some spark plugs back in you can see the old champion j-8c's are they're a little bit carboned up but they should be good there's all that hot 12-volt sparkage we're throwing at them now i wonder if we screwed up the firing order on our plug wires looks like they all kind of laid out where they were before so provided the last guy had it right we should be good to go it's really easy to remember firing order on a inline six for the most part they're all 15 36 24 starting from the front to back one two three four five six and the old timers way for remembering that is 15 is too young 36 is too old 24 is just right that's your tech tip of the day keep that one in your back pocket 36 is old dang it 24 now the fuel mixer upper yep there we go looks like it needs an oil change speaking of oil did you check the dipstick where is the dipstick can only look for that one other time jimmy where is the dipstick oh for cheese and rice shouldn't be that hard somebody tell me if i'm looking right at it oh i bet it's built in the breather cap they do that sweet found it oh yeah there's oil down there that's the good stuff probably from the 70s how long is that you could impale somebody with that thing use that for jousting breather and a dipstick twofer carburetor stockage no carburetor loosening tool it's a carter it's a good one let's get a bite this thing's even got some type of heat riser automatic choke mechanism that's pretty nifty i'm sure that works just fine let's put our choke stopper in there get the hot sauce all right hot sauce oh everywhere don't know slingshot engaged here we go wow that's that took us a little bit of work but it sounds like it wants to go i cannot believe how quiet that is the starter is literally louder than the engine that starter is not liking the 12 volt side let's give her a little throttle ew it's a lot of smoke there you go hook up our boat tank put some tires on it maybe diddle up the brakes a bit oh if we gotta top the coolant off put a hose on it let's see what happens just that easy first start in 35 years stuff we gotta open the door would you look at that the old students roller again there's some tubulars inside of the maps another quick note they're left-hand thread on the left side of this thing these guys are as silly as mopar and international but i guess when you only got four you really don't want one coming off look at these diggers on the back oh yeah this thing is ready for if the hubcaps are in there see a mirror and a grill also did a little quick research and i think it's a 47 8 or 9. i'm sure the stewed followers we'll chime in on that yeah we're getting real close to going for a test drive just gotta put a throttle linkage on i figure out a fuel system we should figure out where the starter button thinger is in there so that we can start it from in the car and shut it off that would be good all right got electric fuel pump mounted down on the frame rail got a boat tank in there let's see how she runs slingshot engage a little bit dry big ham oh yeah she's got a lobey cam if this were a cummins it'd be a big cam 400 can we all smooth that big that's a lot of that's a lot of feature right there wells i've got a clutch i'm sure it's got bricks what is super firm oh you don't want to do it in gear though as soon as you let off because it starts because you gotta let off and up just to disengage the starter i got it [Music] [Music] weird it's fine 40 pounds of oil pressure it's charging about a half an amp oh this had the factory tachometer option but it's gone nobody snagged that here's our nice fuel system i found a nice hole to route it through in the floor don't tell the purists boat tank on the seat yeah the tire's about ready to have kitties now oh look how neat this is i'm trying to figure out where the starter buttons at look at that it's got two dimmer switches oh yeah the brakes they're real good right to the floor and stuck neutral you push the clutch all the way in [Music] how gosh darn neat is that probably not real good when you go for the one two shift and you push the clutch in a little too far and engage that at about 6 000 rpm look at this elf size mirror well elf height mirror you know don't put it up here just put our way down here what is that this thing have dome lights dang this thing is minty well this mouse infested piece of amazingness is not sleeping inside so she runner out for the night duff so you can't run into get in there load up oh yeah you think duff this dude gonna start today so this thing wasn't gonna sleep inside last night because the mice don't need to live in my shop so i drove it out in the dark wasn't much to record i'm an idiot doesn't have brakes nothing bad happened nobody died let's see if it'll start today though it's got a under hood cable latch this thing was cutting edge technology and let's just say it's a 48 split the difference it's either 80 or 85 horsepower from what i read on the interwebs just got to get our battery opened up clear fuel pump oh snakey i hope that hood latched thing works override all right let's do it get over there key on then you just whammy the clutch pedal down to crank it over oh you got out of gear [Music] sweet i don't even have to choke it duff it's got that automatic choke thing that kind of works we're just keeping her mashed that's key just floor it look at that 50 pounds of oil pressure doesn't sound like it's hitting on all of them maybe that six volt coil is getting sick of 12 volts it was running way better last night oh yeah i forgot how square the tires are where's birds where's birds yeah we're definitely got plugs followed or something cause i got her matted i mean i can't imagine that carp needs any work well let's not get too far from home oh boy i don't know we're gonna make it up this oh i made her out of the ditch i'm not in third am i all right i've had enough studebaker fund off let's get rid of this and find somebody who needs an engine after we tune it up a little bit better like it was running last night what oh there now it woke up what the heck oh speedo works don't hit the brakes because they're on the floor oh it's overdrive so you free wheels let off the gas oh what if that choke wasn't on or something what the heck look at that even backs up well now we got to do another test run now that it runs better beers do oh now we're making her happen we might hit second oh yeah like a whole new car dump speedo cable little bound up we're doing somewhere between 30 and uh 48 miles an hour third oh she just cleared right up yeah we gotta unhook that that's annoying you gotta figure out a stop up here too oh yeah cause it just freewheels in a second it doesn't downshift you guys should drive one of these three-speed overdrives once they're kind of a different character non-synchronized first gear oh no it is synchronized that's the good engine clutch dump oh shoot she gets sideways [Music] you might have to keep it needs a muffler and some tires some brakes ah stuff falling on my feet and a speedo cable that's annoying it's even charging you stop there you go no stop we gotta figure out how to get the hood on is that what the h is for oh this is the hood i think of course it's fires right up this thing's like the greatest car i've never owned until now oh and it needs a headliner or needs to get ripped out so it's not rubbing on my noggin oh shoot nikes you can't just let off the clutch with these overdrives it just keeps rolling when it's in gear don't hit the uni don't hit the dart dart don't hit the uni uni what did you think oh you really like it don't you you're staying in there all right so i don't know what's going on there if it's flooded out or if the choke was on we had to let it warm up but she was not happy that came out of it this thing it ain't bad for 80 horsepowers this has got overdrive and synchronized first gear apparently should probably check into that but it seems like it's synchronized i don't think it's worth putting brakes in tires not for me oh forget the sound quality because we're in the prairie and the wind blows every day 1948 studebaker and running who knows how many years let's say 35. a couple of stuck valves made some tires more round than they were oh let's check that one out you still just hanging out in there with the mice see if our tire had kittens yet nope she's she's still holding in there better let her down to about 10 psi because that thing was really bulging out last night this thing is kind of cool this thing's good overdrive that's neat how neat is that hood prop hood pop that's neat that's pretty neat starter pedal a lot of neat stuff unfortunately not for me so everybody can quit crying that i'm breaking valves when they're stuck and i actually got a flathead running flat at six i guess that is appreciate it make sure you like the video tell your friends subscribe if you haven't already check out my other videos remember doesn't matter how you get it done as long as you're having fun stuff was riding in that thing fun huh is that fun do you think this dude is fun you need a student in your life yeah me [Music] either you
