good morning it is 10 35 meteorologist megan salwal with you we have severe storms bearing down on the des moines metro area if you are not already in a building or a secure location you want to be there soon because within about 30 minutes around 11 o'clock these storms will be moving into the des moines metro area and they have a history of producing 70 mile per hour plus winds and we've already received a number of wind damage reports from many communities in western iowa including manning and glidden we're hearing about very strong winds that have brought down a number of large trees and tree branches as well as towards the denison area and these strong winds will be moving towards the des moines metro area as well as ames again within the last 30 minutes or in the next 30 minutes in the western side sooner so we have a number of warning boxes in place on the western edge of the des moines metro area including waukee and a small sliver of polk county again 70 mile per hour winds will be possible with these storms the latest look at some of these warnings go until 11 a.m for parts of boone carroll dallas green guthrie and far western polk county you may have already heard sirens at your house well when a severe thunderstorm warning is issued and it has a tag of 70 mile per hour winds with this storm a number of counties in the metro do sound their sirens for storms that could produce winds of that speed which is why you're seeing and hearing the sirens now we haven't had any reports of tornadoes but we have had reports of these damaging winds that have been knocking over trees and taking down large branches in western iowa so that's why they're giving you the heads up and sounding that siren with these storms again des moines very soon will probably be a part of a warning here momentarily these storms are moving in from the west at about 55 miles per hour we could even see some hail with some of these storms as well and they're going to continue pushing towards that i-35 corridor they're moving in an easterly direction at about 55 miles per hour now i do want to go ahead and put a track on these storms as well at this time jerriann's in here working with me as well and she is taking a look at some of the damage reports of what's coming out of these storms and she'll have an update on that for us here in just a minute but as we track this band of storms it shows it in the des moines metro area right around 10 57 indianola at 1109 colfax at 11 17 and in marshalltown at 11 34. and again what you're going to experience with this is torrential downpours frequent thunder and lightning those strong winds and even some hail up to an inch in size this cluster of storms will continue shooting right across the state of iowa and it will continue into illinois and indiana over the next few hours so there is that risk of severe weather from iowa off to the east especially some strong conditions as that storm moves through and we do have a severe thunderstorm watch in place it goes until two o'clock this afternoon so for the next hour hour and a half here in the metro area you need to be on guard if you're east of des moines i think you need to really watch from this storm from about 12 30 through 2 o'clock this afternoon again jerriann is in studio with us as well and so she's working over in our weather center right now and she's been monitoring the chat and i think jerriann do you have any updates of some of the reports of severe weather we're seeing in western iowa i do and while i read through these i'm going to have you run over to your radar and just go in on adele that's where the greatest concern is right now and it is actually seven miles northwest of adel they're reporting significant winds a large tree down it hit a house without power now so far the estimated winds are right around 60 plus miles per hour that is why a severe thunderstorm warning is in effect right now and that is why the sirens are going off we have what we call something bowing out here on radar and that's just indicating these very strong wind gusts moving through the metro area they're now on the west side and there is some damage being reported perry reporting several trees down as well and we now have a new severe thunderstorm warning which includes polk counties so boone jasper marion marshall polk story and warren county and that will be in effect until 11 30. if you're in those counties right now we want you to be in your safe spot with these strong winds moving through if you have some family or friends outdoors right now please let them know that a strong to severe thunderstorm is moving through heavy rainfall blinding rain some very strong winds and we can't rule out some large hail with these storms as well hey jerry ann on max one we have pulled up the close-up of adele so i'm hoping our production crew can flip to max one there we go do you want to talk a little bit about adele you said that um towards adele they had had some wind damage yeah right on the northwest side right now is where the strongest winds are located at this point and that's where we're hearing reports of some large trees down and unfortunately one that hit a house they are without power now and we're just trying to give folks a heads up these storms are headed right for waukee van meter the west mix master the city of des moines norwalk ankeny we also have a very strong storm on the north side of perry right now in between jefferson and perry and these are moving at a speed of around 50 miles per hour out to the east so these are all the areas in a severe thunderstorm warning until 11 30. again it's boone jasper marion marshall polk story and warren county and at this point the greatest threat is these very strong winds of 60 to 70 miles per hour moving at the speed of a car on the interstate so this is really nothing to mess around with the safest place to be right now is the lowest level of your home you want to put as many walls between you and the outside and we really want you in the basement or a bathroom and you can live stream us also on 13.2 and go to the internet at whotv.com to live stream us and just turn the volume up and we'll keep you updated and jerriann take a look at our traffic cameras we're going to go ahead and have our production director back in the back pull up the latest traffic camera i heard they have a view of i-80 at george flagg parkway looks like a few raindrops are starting to come down right now the dark clouds out to the west and again we're going to see torrential rainfall moving in with this storm a lot of thunder and lightning and again those very intense winds as they move into central iowa and it's just as jerriann was saying we're going to continue to see again those wind speeds increasing as that storm comes in so here's that latest look durian was just giving you a close-up look at it just a moment ago des moines is now included um jerriann could you take max one and zoom this out just a touch so we can see how expansive this next warning is i'll have you clear that and back it out there just a touch and ames is a part of this as well story was a part of it thanks so much but we do have a little bit of jerian was talking just about this that boeing effect a little bit of here this storm and that indicates a very strong wind gust out ahead of it so very momentarily here towards and into waukee that rain is about to come down you're going to get gusty winds with it as well all up and down that i-35 corridor as it moves in so we're going to continue to see this moving through i did actually see a report a little bit earlier in the chat there was a jackknifed semi-trailer further out on i-80 because of the strong winds again the storm is moving to the east at about 50 to 55 miles per hour so a couple of the communities in its path do include boone very soon within about five minutes here so it's just bearing down on you right now ames at 1104 nevada at 11 14 and then colfax at 11 29 11 44 for newton so you're still a ways out but it is headed your way we we are expecting this complex of storms durian to continue to persist there's a lot of heat and humidity feeding this system and so it's intensified as it's moved out of nebraska and it's continued to stay very strong very heavy rainfall or even possibly some hail here jerriann is focusing in on this right now over rippy the grand junction area along highway 144 right there so again we could see again very large hail in that area so do you want to talk a little bit about the hail potential jerry yeah that's exactly what i'm seeing right now and it is hitting definitely rippy the hardest at this point and this is just indicating that there is enough growth with this thunderstorm to produce very large hail so we're going to track this for you and give you some idea of where this is headed again zoom out just a little bit here woodward madrid all in the track of this large hail right now that is just on the north side of perry highway 144 is where we're seeing most of the hail at this point right here in between rippy and berkeley is where the strongest part of the storm is right along highway 144 north of perry there's also been some wind damage reports out of perry a radio amateur radio a spotter in perry he's reporting their trees down in perry because of the winds that strong went right on the edge of madrid right now jerriann that looks like madrid seeing some probably pretty extreme winds right now as the first of this rain moves in exactly that is where the heaviest rain is located right now let's put a big track on this going from just south of fort dodge stretching all the way down to near wintersend at this point and moving at a speed of around 50 to 50 miles per hour off to the east waukee 10 51 you're already starting to see some rain there but get ready for some really strong winds and unfortunately there is some hail associated with this just to the west newton by around 11 41. if you're hearing the sirens go off right now that is because of the very strong wind potential with these storms i'm going to go through all the severe thunderstorm warnings here for you real quick to give you some idea of who's under the warnings and we've talked a lot about the perry rippy community at this point there's a severe thunderstorm warning in effect until 11 a.m and we also have several severe thunderstorm warnings right around the metro area this includes boone jasper marion marshall polk story and warren county and just to the south parts of madison county also in the severe thunderstorm warning and that will be for about the next hour and at this point we're continuing to see the strongest storm just west of i-35 and moving off to the east i'm going to put this into motion and show you the big picture here with these storms because once these pass within the next hour to two hours we do think things are really calmed down by around 2 p.m at this point all these communities remain under a severe thunderstorm watch until 2 p.m but numerous severe thunderstorm warnings at this point especially just on the north side of perry and rippy is continuing to see this large hail and i just want to cut in here can you take a close-up view of the metro and on the west side of the metro because we do have an update on the warning for the des moines metro area 80 mile per hour winds are expected with this it has just been upgraded by the national weather service rain now beginning on the west side of urbandale west des moines coming down in waukee they have upgraded this warning to an 80 mile per hour wind gusts and they are expecting tree damage and other property damage moving through the metro area with this storm as it moves through so they have upgraded that level of severity with this storm because they are seeing such intense winds with it as they move into the metro if you are in des moines if you are in ankeny do not go out right now if you know someone who is out on the roads you need to tell them to get into a building as soon as they can because this storm does have a history of extensive tree damage in western iowa and it is moving towards the des moines metro area where they have even upgraded it to an 80 mile per hour wind threat look at all the lightning the lightning jerry and just but you put on the lightning you can't even see the rain when the lightning is on so it's going to have quite a show when it comes in here but it's a show you don't want to see you want to stay inside your building away from the windows it is not a tornado warning at this time but it can do just as bad of damage as a weekend tornado but for a larger area of space and so we want you to definitely be taking cover out there i just got heard from our producer we have a traffic camera we're going to show oh wow so here comes the rain rain this is i-80 this looks like it's up towards i believe that's urbandale meredith meredith and i-80 again that very heavy rains coming down next the wind is going to come down if you're in a high profile vehicle we've already had some jackknifed semi-trailers in western iowa due to these strong winds so we definitely want you to be taking cover right now we want you off the roads widespread tree damage and even power outages will be possible with this if the trees take down power lines so hopefully your phone is charged up you're in your safe spot we do have a report out of rockwell city which is in northern iowa northwest iowa and calhoun county there are reports of power lines down and trees are down all over rockwell city again this storm is moving towards the des moines metro area we already had a 70 mile per hour gust reported in perry so express expect very widespread strong winds with this storm torrential downpours even the potential for some hail but i really think the biggest threat with this storm are the strong winds that could take down trees and power lines it will be in des moines here at 1101 1102 in ames 1124 in colfax 1136 in newton and 11 45 in marshalltown and it is moving very fast at about 50 to 55 miles per hour so it's moving through quickly and it is doing a lot of damage as it moves through so jerriann do you want to add anything go through warnings or anything like that yeah let's do the warnings here first i'm just putting the warnings back on here to give you some idea if you're in one of these yellow boxes right now and you're hearing my voice we want you in a safe spot 70 to 80 mile per hour winds can cause damage and that is why many sirens are going off across the state there is no evidence of rotation with these storms they're all moving in the same direction we have a few new severe thunderstorm warnings here so i'm just yeah that went first parts of southern iowa down through yeah clark lucas madison i'm just going to take these off here just a second and walk through all of these for you first let's start with this one between milo and sheraton that's a severe thunderstorm warning clark lucas madison marion union county that's until 11 30. also for the city of des moines ames in the same severe thunderstorm warning here until 11 30. just to the west of i-35 right now a dare clark madison union and warren county that's until 11 a.m and we still have boone carroll dallas green guthrie and polk county still in that severe thunderstorm warning as well we have a severe thunderstorm warning also still in effect until 11 15 for calhoun hamilton and webster county let's go back to radar here so i can show you exactly what we're seeing we're seeing very strong winds heavy rainfall and a large hail threat and i'm going to put this into motion here so you can see just how fast these storms are moving and unfortunately there's just a ton of lightning with these as well and they're continuing to move off to the east at a speed of around 50 miles per hour about 10 43 a gust front arrived in grimes and they're estimating the winds to be right around 45 miles per hour i feel like this is new too a pear tree in the front yard just snapped off and grimes as the storms moved in let's zoom into grimes here after these storms pass through again once the storms are through your area let us know if you've seen any damage of course we don't want you out there right now but once the storms have moved through if you do have any damage reports please let us know through social media i'm seeing the worst part of the storm right now right around highway 169 the area where you see the purple here is where we're seeing reports of hail definitely some of our strongest winds and our heaviest rainfall and it's right in between perry and madrid just on the north side of granger as these storms quickly move off to the east uh huxley ankeny i want you bracing yourself for some changing weather conditions as the situation will continue to get worse here megan i'm gonna let you play around here on this radar box one as i look at i'll let you take a look at the other on max 2. i'm going to jump on max 1 here and just give you an overview of what we're looking at we have a complex of storms that developed in nebraska and south dakota very early this morning and as it moved into our warm and humid condition here in central iowa it's fueled this storm and it has a very high wind damage potential with it we have numerous numerous reports across western iowa places like manning glidden denison i'm seeing reports out of perry now of extensive tree damage in those locations and 80 mile per hour winds will be possible with this storm as it moves in we're already seeing the edge of it on the west side of the des moines metro area so here are some of the latest warnings in central iowa it does include polk county dallas county is still under that warning as well and we're going to continue to see these warnings expand off to the front of this over the course of the morning so at 11 am our dallas county warning here back towards carroll and green and guthrie that's until 11 a.m but as we were just showing you a few moments ago there was a new warning on the front edge of this so let me pop that warning in there so you can see the exact does include the des moines metro area national weather service has upped this the language to this to an 80 mile per hour wind potential widespread tree damage is possible as well as power outages as this line of storms move in it's right here splitting the des moines metro area right now so we're under the warning until 11 30 goes all the way out towards newton newton you'll probably see this closer to the 11 30 time frame we also have some warnings a little further off in studio as well um i do want to remind you desoto right now is where we're hearing reports of some 70 mile per hour wind gusts lots of small trees down several anchored swing sets are blowing around these winds are nothing to mess around with again the safest place to be right now is in your basement away from the windows we do not want you watching this storm we'll keep you updated on what's happening right now but it's headed right for the des moines metro area we're starting to get the rainfall here definitely the strongest part of the storm at this point is located just on the north side and but all of these communities are seeing these winds that are causing the sirens to go off at this point so let's do one more track on this i'm going to take off these warnings just so you can focus on the radar moving east about 55 miles per hour and this is the biggest concern here is just that bow like as if a hunter was out using a bow and that just screams to us some very dangerous winds so in the city of des moines here within the next couple of minutes you're going to start to experience these really strong winds this storm is headed for newton we want you to have plenty of notice it will be in your community around 11 36 and yes marshalltown you will be experiencing the strong to severe thunderstorm at 11 45. strongest part of the storm is right along highway 30 and it's headed right for the ames community i'm going to do a special track on that as well because this is where we're not only seeing the 70 to 80 mile per hour wind gusts but also the hail with it so i can hear the winds here at 1104. nevada at 1115 state center at 11 32 eldora 1138 marshalltown 1148. these are hitting the highly populated areas in the des moines metro area the hardest we're definitely concerned for vehicles along i-35 in between ames and des moines at this point and also right through the heart of dallas county and near newton and grinnell right along i-80 these winds are strong enough to blow a semi off the road yep as we've already seen it happen unfortunately blowing very strong large trees onto homes and we're still continuing to see the strongest part of the storm with strong winds and hail in between madrid and perry yeah jerriann we could get a lot of wind damage with this storm we're hearing it here at our building that's really so are we on air still or okay there we are um okay you need to right now you need to be in your basement right jerry i mean basement is where it's not a tornado but it has winds as strong as a tornado and it's moving across the entire metro area right now so you need to be in your basement you need to be away from windows if you have somebody that's on the roads right now on the east side of town tell them to pull over and get in a building go to a near spy store a gas station they do not want to be on the roads right now we're going to see extensive possibly tree damage with this we could see power outages with this we keep taking power hits here at the station it's moving into the des moines area right now the downtown area currently it's along i-35 into ankeny now behind this things are a lot calmer and we're going to have a quiet afternoon but we have a rough hour to get through 30 minutes to an hour as this moves through because the storm is moving fast it's moving at about 55 miles per hour right now so if you're in newton it's going to be in your area at 11 29 pella you'll see the storm at 11 45 and 11 50 in grinnell this storm is going to continue tracking across this the county here over the next 30 minutes so you need to be in your safe spot right now jerriann have on chat have you seen on chat have we got any new reports um nothing new you know de soto grimes all getting hit hard from this but i do want to go through this new severe thunderstorm warning we are getting hit hard here at the station right now as we're starting to hear the winds and the heavy rainfall the storm is now moving at 70 miles per hour located near polk city and it is also near the johnston community right now and we are just continuing to see extremely strong winds you're looking live at i-80 right now if you know anyone on the interstate please encourage them to pull over this is looks like they're trying to travel with that today just a really dangerous situation where things can be blowing around we want you to pull over and get to a safe spot and definitely the safest place to be right now is in your basement you can always bring your phone with you and take live streaming so you can hear our voice and we'll continue to let you know these are not producing tornadoes but they're producing winds in the same direction capable of significant wind damage we're talking 70 to even 80 mile per hour wind gusts these storms are moving at a speed of 80 miles per hour right now right along i-35 let's go back to radar if we can i'm so grateful to see a lot of folks pulled over there on the interstate but that's where the most dangerous situation is the strongest part of the storm is just to the west of ames and elkhart and that's where we've been seeing some large hail reports and our strongest winds are now hitting the heart of the state in des moines right along i-35 i-80 i-235 winterset is still experiencing the very heavy rainfall these storms are headed right for newton pella and marshalltown we want you all to be in your safe spot it's just starting to make its way closer to ames as well okay so jerriann i'm going to go ahead take it take a break so you can uh you can work with radar we're going to take a close-up look again we're seeing very strong winds right now this storm has a history of producing 70 74 mile per hour winds des moines potentially as this bows out you can see this bow out right here from elkhart just to the east of ankeny down on the east side of des moines this is your strongest push of wind it's that bowing out of the rain and as that strong wind is pushing it and that could lead to numerous trees down power outages that sort of thing over the next 30 minutes as the storm moves through we are going to continue to watch for some hail potentially within this rainfall but i really think the most widespread damage we're going to see here over the next 30 minutes is because of the winds so this storm is going to continue plowing through the des moines metro area it is headed towards newton altoona you need to be in your safe spot right now newton you have a little bit of some time maybe about 30 minutes or so but you need to already be planning to be off the roads here over the next 30 minutes to an hour waukee the rain is coming down very heavy where you are now if the storm has already passed your area if you're in western iowa if there is damage feel free to send us a pictures of what damage you've seen after the storm we don't want you out there right now we don't want you at your window jerriann's outlining the front edge of the rain and the wind here moving into pleasant hill altoona heavy downpours in des moines along 235 traffic is probably pretty much stopped right now ankeny as well we're seeing that heavy downpour and the clive area as well it is moving very fast across the metro with those very intense winds at a speed of a the speed of the storm is at 55 miles per hour the speed of the winds could be up to 70 miles per hour or possibly even higher and the warnings extend all the way just west of marshalltown through newton down through pleasantville melcher dallas all of you need to be taking cover at this time this storm is going to continue moving across the metro area here over the next 30 minutes anything new on the chat jerry um trees down everywhere okay jerriann yes brett is saying brett just made it in he says there's trees just down everywhere yeah unfortunately it's straight line winds so they're all going to go down in the same uh unfortunately the same direction this is just as dangerous as a tornado folks with 70 to 80 mile per hour winds with these storms we also have been having the storm just sit around madrid with some large hail as well the storm is headed right for carlisle as well as maxwell as it moves off to the east now at a speed of around 70 miles per hour these are old damage reports coming in from about five minutes ago just showing boone reporting numerous trees down power outages around fort dodge also in urbandale yeah urbandale i'm seeing 86 and meredith unfortunately some roof damage with these storms and right now it is hitting the heart of the state the highly populated areas the hardest with the winds all moving in the same direction and we've had reports of 70 to 80 mile per hour winds in between des moines ankeny folks this is at the east mix master it's at the west mix master the strongest wind gusts right now is reaching altoona but it's headed right for colfax carlisle reynolds prairie city these are communities that will be in the track of the storm as well as huxley ames starting to experience these very strong winds again these are right along i-35 and just west of i-35 jerry and let's check do we have any traffic cameras that we could pull up maybe even on the east side of des moines out towards altoona or along i-80 okay we have a photo that's come in that i think we're going to get pulled up this is from wind damage out in ottoman it is coming but again like i said brett just came into the studio he said he had to drive through two front yards because trees were down across roads um this is an audubon there's a pickup truck that's underneath this fallen tree here so yeah this is going to be a common sight the weather should clear up durian this afternoon but i i think people are going to be busy cleaning up well with these storms moving at a speed of 70 to 80 miles per hour they will clear des moines here within the next hour to two hours but you're not going to like what it leaves behind okay and we don't want you leaving your home right now no with the power lines down numerous large trees down folks it is dangerous all right we have roger riley out right now where's roger exactly he's in ames we know he's in ames right now and wow it looks really dark there in ames almost like night yes it does and you can see there the heavy rainfall coming down and unfortunately the very strong winds blowing the rain across the state again i want to remind you if you are hearing the sirens go off that is because we want you in your safe place we don't want you watching outside your window right now we want you in your basement we want you in your bathroom we want you putting as many walls between you and the outside and unfortunately this storm is definitely strong enough to lead to significant wind damage producing some very large trees that are uprooted and they're hitting homes and we are seeing power lines down which can also lead to a dangerous situation right now the strongest part of the storm is right in between ames and des moines and moving off to the east at a speed of 70 miles per hour we do have a new severe thunderstorm warning in effect and that will remain in effect until 11 30. it's about 11 10 at this point and we're getting numerous wind gusts in just in between 70 and 80 miles per hour and that is nothing to mess around no it's not jerry and here's a look at the last few hours let's take a look at this timeline well here we're going to get a shaking traffic camera where is this one located road and ankeny as you can see it is just taking a beating with these strong wind gusts the torrential downpours there is probably flash flooding happening on area roads and interstates right now so if you know anybody that are that's on the roads out along i-80 if you're in newton you're planning to drive into des moines don't do it right now just turn around get back into a building as the storm moves in this is the progress of this storm it came out of nebraska it moved through carroll atlantic audubon where we had tritium well there's been true damage all along it through stuart towards the des moines metro area and it's going to continue just plowing right across the metro here numerous trees down around the metro we're getting reports of roof damage as well and this storm is going to continue moving east so communities here to the east from marshalltown down through sheraton you are going to be potentially seeing some wind damage as well now we can go ahead and take a look at what's currently happening we'll stop the loop here in just a moment we'll take a look at where that heaviest rain is over des moines right in this area ankeny we're seeing very heavy rain right now as well and then up through the huxley area with those strong winds and we're going to continue to again see those very dangerous conditions here progressing further to the east as the storm moves towards colfax if you're in colfax i want you to be taking cover right now baxter take cover max well this storm is moving in nevada as well and this storm is going to continue moving off to the east as we continue to see it progress southern iowa has a number of warnings too even osceola down towards sheraton this storm does trail all the way down into southern iowa so we could even be seeing some wind damage here just south of the des moines metro however where you have that bowing out where it extensively pokes out here to the front that's where you're getting that push and that just velocity to push that storm right through and you'll get your most intense winds in that area so that's what we've been seeing i'm going to put a track on this storm again it is moving east about 55 to 60 miles per hour so it's moving very fast colfax you are next 1117 pella it will be in your area at 11 40. montezuma at 11 55 and in brooklyn in eastern iowa just a few moments before the noon hour once this moves through things should start to settle down the rain does extend for a period of time behind the storm but the winds should start to lighten up nevada the storm is moving into your area pretty much as we speak here again marshalltown just east of there and then the conrad area as well all in the path of the storm and then further to the south as well we have this other warning here to the south and we have these strong gusty winds moving towards van wert milo sheraton again moving at about 55 60 miles per hour so in the sheraton area by 1134 pella 1142 and then oscar loose or excuse me yeah oskaloosa just before the noon hour whitney blakemore has passed along a tip that part at least part if not all of the roof to the buccaneers arena is is torn off oh seriously that's from whitney blakemore's mom says hard to see because it's so dark and raining but she's sheltering inside the building she said definitely part if not all of the roof is gone okay yeah that's not good news i think uh we'll see suggestions we have a microphone on that we can hear him he does so if you please stay safe for the time being um once the storm classes your passes your area of course once the storm is gone you can share with us uh what you're seeing outside your house um we should look and see if we have any any social pictures coming in right can you repeat that just to folks too please uh yeah the whitney blakemore uh talked to her mom and said it's hard to see because it's so dark and it's raining on her as she's sheltering inside the building she said definitely it part of the roof if not all of it is gone so raining inside on her mother there at buccaneers arena we'll try to find out more see how extensive the damage is okay we do have a new severe thunderstorm warning in effect as well because of the 70 to 80 mile per hour wind gusts this is not a tornado warning but there are sirens going off because with winds like this we can experience significant damage as you heard a roof already blown off of a pretty significant building so this severe thunderstorm warning in effect for clark lucas madison marion union warren county in effect until 11 30. we're also just getting reports in from murray as well but this is right around 11 o'clock we're close to 11 15 right now but murray in clark county reporting damage to a foundation of a home several large tree limbs down as very large tree trunks experiencing damage there let's go back to radar because you can see we want you to understand that the strongest part of the storm right now is on the east side of des moines where we're seeing the strongest wind gusts and this is headed right for marshalltown we want folks to have as much notice as possible where this storm is we're getting heavy rainfall and some hail returns in between ames and des moines but right along i-35 in des moines we do have significant winds moving through if you can wait there for about the next half hour by noon i do think i-35 will be much calmer than it is right now just pull over take a moment and just be in a safe spot it's headed right for newton and knoxville as well starting to move out of the winterset community and fort dodge is now just experiencing rainfall but polk county dallas county also jasper county all still under a severe thunderstorm warning and we also have reports out of ames now of an estimated 70 mile per hour wind gusts is there any way we can go back to roger who is in ames right now because they should be experiencing the worst part of the storm right along highway 30 there he's parked okay good i'm glad to hear he's parked and in a safe spot exactly what we told them to do so that's good to hear we're definitely getting the storm in downtown des moines right now and here is a look at roger riley who is around the ames community and you can just see all the rain coming down boy we wanted that rainfall we didn't want the damaging winds with this storm as well but that's what we're seeing and that's what the greatest threat is at this point we're getting reports out of clive of lots of small branches down again this is leading to significant power outages so it is a dangerous situation we don't want you driving in this right now and we want you in your basement away from windows and listening to us yeah there's we have an i-80 traffic camera to show uh some of the wind here i think in just a moment we'll get there for you um but yeah just torrential downpours flash flooding strong winds which traffic camera is this tracy near okay so this is 80 at colfax so this is just at the front of the storm um and ahead of it or just the beginning of the storm as it moves through again all along i-80 here we've got that boeing effect happening along that thunderstorm here take a look at radar right now durian has a nice close-up of it on the radar if you guys can pull it up for me here on max1 there it is that little boeing effect and it's just jutting out there again that is those very strong 70 mile per hour to even possibly close to 80 mile per hour winds that are just rocketing down i-80 there this storm does have a history of producing again all the wind damage you're hearing about from tree limbs to even some trees down to power outages to roof damage is happening so if you are east of des moines be prepared this is moving your way and it does not look like it's weakening at this point it is not it is staying strong so if you are a newton be prepared the storm is headed your way monroe as well pleasantville you are there on the edge as well here is that heavy rain in des moines coming down still still very gusty out there as well and again the other factor jerry and you know the weather's going to calm down once this moves through it's it's going to be a brief part of the day however there's going to be a lot of trees down around metro and other communities here in central iowa so even getting out after the storm you may find difficult because you may have issues obstacles on the roads because all of that will need to be picked up so keep that in mind if you do have afternoon and evening plans we may still have issues getting out on the roads even though the storm will then be done and this is all the lightning jerry and put on the lightning tracker so much lightning you can't even hardly see the rain so frequent lightning here within this storm as well the rain does extend back past a dell towards guthrie center but some drier air working in on the back side as well so again this will move through over the next hour or two and then the rain is going to start tapering off and it's just going to continue moving right along i-80 headed towards places like newton grinnell eventually to iowa city to cedar rapids you're going to be seeing some of the strong wind and rain out that direction as well we'll see calmer conditions out on the west side of this storm so again it's moving at about 50 miles per hour so it takes it towards the newton area at 11 26 pella at 11 41 grinnell 1142 oskaloosa at noon and 12 17 by the williamsburg areas this continues just megan sorry just three minutes ago picked up a wind gust at the ankeny airport of uh 78 miles per hour so you heard earlier that the bucks roof had damage to i believe we have a picture or video or live shot we have a live shot so we'll go we'll go ahead to that this is whitney blakemore's here oh that that doesn't look very good so it looks like a lot of damage it's hard to tell i'm assuming those are pieces of the roof that are coming out do we have a phoner with whitney can she talk to us and tell us oh this is lee okay i don't know if what lea is seeing there other than the than the roof coming off so lee rouse is out there live but unfortunately with winds like this 70 to maybe even 80 miles per hour and a roof like the bucks it could definitely just peel peel the roof right off so sounds like brett's getting a call maybe about something else going on so if you are in the bucks area you probably want to stay away from that side road there there's a lot of roofing on the street um and so jerriann do you want to do a radar tour again for us and i want to talk through is that right off hitman uh yeah hickman yeah douglas community they're close to 86th street and this is urbandale folks and you're looking at the buckeyes arena there with the roof blown off those winds are now close to colfax and headed right for newton i do want to talk about this storm in between ankeny and huxley at this point as well because we have reports of 70 to 80 mile per hour wind gusts around this community as well these are headed right for maxwell right along highway 65. i'm going to walk through all the communities here on radar that we're the most concerned about and that story city you're continuing to experience hail heavy rainfall and strong winds as well as zearing ames huxley ankeny mitchellville downtown des moines norwalk indianola new virginia pleasantville i need you in your safe spot melcher dallas newton all communities that will be experiencing these strong winds we're starting to see the winds get closer to colo and state center at this point and i'm going to track this storm because it is moving so fast folks all these yellow boxes represent communities in a severe thunderstorm warning you may be seeing this damage right now hearing about the power lines down large trees uprooted home damage as well as large trees on homes this is not associated with a tornado we're not seeing any rotation with these storms but the winds are moving in the same direction at a speed of 70 to 80 miles per hour and that can cause damage and that's exactly why those sirens go off for storms like this so at this point we're getting reports that it's moving right around 50 to even 60 miles per hour directly east by 11 26 colfax will be experiencing this storm right now it is 11 22. at around 11 40 in between sheraton and pella oskaloosa right around the noon hour 12 10 you can see belle plain let's go back to that damage where whitney blakemore i believe lee rouse is there in urbandale to show us the damage at buckeye's arena yeah and uh jerriann we we've also heard just got a caller back here from perry that says there's a lot of house damage tree damage transformer fires across the entire town of perry so right now if you live in perry even though the heaviest of the storms have moved through it's best to stay inside a lot of damage and dangerous situations again this is our live shot up in urban isle up urban day out the des moines buccaneers arena with the roof pulled off there but it does sound like from our caller that that perry significant damage okay so bro i'm told lee lee rouse at the buccaneers uh arena hey br elite can you tell us a little bit about the damage that's happened out there yeah it was a scary drive over here most of the roads are blocked with trees in urbandale merle hay was flooded so i kind of worked my way through the neighborhood and it looks like most of the roof of the bucks arena is laying right here in the parking lot on the east side of it uh the power's still on here but the power was out in other parts of town as i was driving this way okay hey thanks so much for letting us know how things look out there and i'm glad you're you're safe now that the worst of the storm has moved through there so thanks for being out there does lee know as was anybody injured in the building is everybody okay i haven't seen i saw some people in the entryway and the power's still on so i don't they didn't look like anybody's been injured so yeah there are people in the entryway but it looks like the roof is just in the parking lot now lee if people were considering going out for anything this afternoon i mean are the roads just going to be a mess when they're out on the roads yeah there's trees and debris everywhere garbage cans blowing around all the construction signs were blowing around in urbandale it's going to be hard to get anywhere for a little while my neighbor just called me and said my my tree in my front yard sitting on the power lines over in oak park oh i'm sorry to hear that well thank you so much for being out there and taking in the scene for us we appreciate it now to me it looks like the winds have died down at that location and he would be right around the urbandale community we want to stress the strongest winds are located right here right through newton at this point just beginning to move out of the ames community and right towards marshalltown but these are moving due east indianola getting the brunt of the storm and it's headed right for knoxville as well as oskaloosa montezuma as the storm quickly moves off to the east at a speed of around 60 to even 70 miles per hour jerry and it looks like there's some new warnings here too do you see that one new warning box yep i'm on yeah so we'll go ahead and take a look at that let's walk you through all the warnings i'm actually going to turn off the radar just so we can focus on these are the areas of concern right now at this very moment there is a severe thunderstorm warning in effect for clark lucas madison marion union and warren county that is until 11 30. if you live in this yellow box or no family members or friends who are in this box we want you to tell them to get into their safe spot if you have kids that may be at home right now and you want to call them and let them know what's going on the strongest part of the storm is starting to move out of the ames des moines area and getting east of i-35 and this is where we're seeing the strongest winds a severe thunderstorm warning remains in effect until noon today for jasper mahaska marion marshall polk powashik story tama and warren county also just to the north here we still have a severe thunderstorm warning in effect until noon for grundy hamilton and hardin counties but you can see these yellow boxes right now right along i-35 and to the east and this is where we're seeing the worst part of the storm i'm going to put the track on it now and take away these warnings so you can see where it is moving and how fast it is moving at a direct speed all these winds are moving in the same location right now same direction boy that storm i'm going to zoom in here first just north of ames looks like a pocket of hail with very heavy rainfall right now located in between story city and ziring and we do have a car camera in ames so this is roger reilly out on the road the rain looks a little lighter the sky's not quite as dark right now so that is some good news um i don't know is there any chance to uh at some point to talk to roger and find out what he's seen move through he's okay we're going to have roger call in and give us an update on what he's been seeing here in just a few minutes but as you can see there's lots of branches small trees all over the road that's going to be a common common sight here in central iowa here as the storm continues to move across the conditions starting to calm down around waukee and winter set but still we're seeing significant winds bowing out with the storm in between collins mitchellville right around newton indianola just to the west of marshalltown the strongest part of the storm i'm going to start here and track this for you and the storm has been moving about 50 miles per hour to the east marshalltown 11 37 that's about the next 10 minutes you're probably already beginning to experience the rain pella community 1139 oskaloosa by around 1201 bell plain at 12 10 and vinton by 12 26. so if you are concerned here in the city of des moines again we want you to stay put we don't want you driving around checking out the damage but the strongest winds are now east of i-35 at this point we're seeing heavy rainfall in between ames and des moines and there is a pocket that resembles some hail just north of the ames community right here and that's where we have the potential for some large hail in between story city and zearing all right jerriann we're going to continue to watch the storm as it continues to move out of the metro area i think for the time being right now here in des moines we're still seeing the rain coming down but we're not dealing with the torrential downpours that we had earlier the winds are starting to lighten up a bit still maybe gusty at times but not to those severe levels that we just experienced the severe winds are going to be on the front edge of this storm so moving into a number of communities including newton oskaloosa marshalltown williamsburg as well it is moving your area so if you are in any of these communities east of the des moines metro area just be aware this storm is moving your way and it does have a history of producing 70 to even 80 mile per hour winds in fact at the des moines international airport in just the last hour there was an 80 mile per hour wind gust that was reported at the airport and winds of that intensity can do ef-0 ef-1 tornado damage but over a bigger area not an isolated area that a tornado would produce so that's why you still need to be in your homes bottom floor away from windows especially now if you are east towards newton and grinnell you need to be taking cover now as the storm is moving your way and we do expect this to hold together hold together it hasn't shown any signs of weakening on the front edge of it it stayed quite strong moving right along that i-80 line and impacting communities in a wide difference in a few ranges of the counties here from north to south all the way from marshalltown down through grinnell and towards the oskaloosa area and these straight-line winds are going to continue pushing across our state all the way towards illinois over the course of the early afternoon we should start to see some clearing and calmer conditions okay jerriann just pulled up the storm reports here so we can zoom in a little closer and she can click on a few of these and show us some of these reports that have been coming in reported to the national weather weather service and we also so as you can see most of these are tree damage and wind gust reports so in windsor heights for example the buccaneers roof blown off for example there so now roger riley has been riding out the storm in the ames area hey roger can you hear me yeah go ahead megan i can hear you okay hey roger tell me a little bit about the storm as it moved through your area yeah i'm in the city of ames and i was driving past the hospital when it hit and it was about as scary as situations i've ever experienced the trees were going back and forth but not together and there was leaves floating around in the air almost like there might have been a funnel oh i never saw a tunnel but right now i'm on i forget the name of the street all over the streets around the merrickville medical center um various streets this is uh this road here is blocked there are numerous uh roads here up uh just south of 13th street i'll go along the bike path trees down all over here i've not seen any uh building damage or anything like that but uh there's a lot of flooding here or retreat flooding you know it's the kind of stuff we have when we get a heavy day illusion rain but the thing that struck me the most about this other than when it first came through was how long it lasted i i hunkered down at the gas station there on east 13th and it went on and on and on for like 15 minutes yeah and um i was you know wondering when this was ever going to stop the high winds i kept feeling my car rocking and obviously uh not advisable to be out there but there were a lot of travelers there in the uh in that area but so far always seeing hearing a lot of trees down okay sounds good jerriann needs to give us an update thank you roger right now the strongest part of the storm is hitting jasper county hard we need to talk about newton as well as the colfax community they're reporting 80 to even 90 mile per hour wind at this point a large tree is blocking lanes of state highway f48 in the town of colfax there is now a severe thunderstorm warning in effect for grundy hamilton and hardin counties as well but right now newton is experiencing those very strong winds that led to significant power outages unfortunately wind damage roof damage large large trees hitting homes in des moines is now around newton moving towards grinnell and pella so newton getting the worst of the storm at this point and i'm going to track on this so other communities are prepared because this storm is moving at such a high rate of speed off to the east right along i-80 pella 11 37 so in just a few minutes toledo 11 56 oskaloosa 11 57 right at 1209 bell plain and moving into eastern iowa by around 12 30. at this point things have calmed down for the city of des moines the worst part of the storm is east of i-35 getting ready to hit marshalltown it's hit hitting newton right now and continuing to move off to the east with these strong winds blinding rainfall and there is some hail associated with this storm as well but our greatest concern right now is these strong winds in between newton and grinnell right along i-80 that already brought down a large tree blocking a road in colfax urbandale also reporting at 112th northeast and 104th in des moines an 85 mile per hour wind gusts that was uh a few minutes ago though that was not just a recent report and we've been talking about that but overall the greatest concern right now is right here yeah so if you are in jasper mahaska marion marshall now polk is included in the severe thunderstorm warning but the bulk of the storm is just about out of polk county and that warning megan you're just talking about it has been upgraded to 80 miles per hour in the warning the radar estimates again we're getting a little bit further away from the radar but they are at 80 to 100 miles per hour in jasper county so it would not be a shock to again as we've seen through the des moines metro 80 mile per hour gusts confirmed they could go even higher than that also on the map here that we've got up we have the severe thunderstorm warnings for southern iowa sheraton south of oskaloosa even though it may not look like it's storming there lamoni picked up a 60 mile per hour wind gust so the severe gust front extends further to the south than even anything you see on radar you'll look at radar you won't see anything you won't even hear any thunder but 60 mile per hour winds are going to come right through the iowa missouri border as well here over the next hour let's take a closer look on the front edge of this hey jerry and can you zoom in on the radar let's take a closer edge along i-80 here the newton area you are seeing some of the worst weather right now very strong winds as brett just mentioned you could see even 80 mile per hour winds there was that report out of urbandale potentially with this storm a little about 30 minutes ago they had an 85 mile per hour wind gust so you could even see that and it is moving at a speed of about 55 miles per hour so here are some of the communities in the path pella 11 41 so coming up in about five minutes here 11 53 in montezuma 1206 in victor 1213 bell plain and then further off to the east here outside of central iowa but newton you are seeing some of the worst weather right now with some of the strongest winds and rain coming in marshalltown you're right on the edge so the rain is just west of you but you've probably seen some gust fronts roll on through you're going to see the strong winds whipping with the storm system and then even potentially some hail up further to the north because yes the winds could be at 80 70 80 miles per hour but we could see some pockets of some hail that could be an inch in size or larger as well this storm is moving to the east grundy center starting to see some of that rain reaching up to their area as well this is right along highway 65 between story county and the liscombe area we have that hail down to the south the heavy rain the strong winds continue places like knoxville you're seeing those very strong winds right now pella you see those dark storm clouds in the beginning of the rain moving into your area lynnville as well melcher dallas this area of wind and rain is just about to come through your area as well we don't expect this to weaken at this time it should continue to be a very strong weather system it's going to work across the state of iowa into eastern iowa and even continue to cause damage moving into illinois and indiana through the late afternoon in the evening it does look like it will most likely hold together in des moines right now the rain is coming down but the winds have lightened up at this point as well as that rainfall and again here is the timing for those communities in eastern iowa 11 47 in marshalltown 11 56 for grinnell montezuma at 1209 and in oskaloosa at about 12 16. so we'll continue to push this storm off to the east it will be bringing with it 70 to 80 mile per hour wind speeds the potential of one inch in diameter hail as well as it moves through the area and it's just along and north of highway 30. so south of highway 30 we're not seeing any storminess but you could still see those gusty winds from the gust front out ahead of this storm system and then just an area of steady rainfall from fort dodge further off to the north but the severe part of this storm here is just it's kind of like a little nose of sorts that's where those strongest winds have the most potential to really blow forward as they move through and lead to some of the worst wind damage as they move across the state so this is going to continue working its way to the east over the next few days or excuse me hours only the next few hours so south of iowa falls right here in between highway 20 and highway 30. definitely the zeroing community right now seeing some of the heaviest rain right along highway 65 and that's where we're also experiencing some very strong wind gusts so the worst part of the storm at this point is with these nasty damaging winds just to the west of grinnell starting to get closer to grinnell pella marshalltown you're starting to experience this very strong to severe thunderstorm that had a history of putting down power lines as well as large trees we want these folks right now in the wind in between marshalltown oskaloosa near sheraton grinnell those are the communities we want to be seeking shelter at this point monroe newton all still experiencing the strong winds and the heavy rainfall things are starting to calm down a little bit around the city of des moines there is no severe thunderstorm warning in effect for the city of des moines at this point all the storm is east of i-35 moving off to the east at a very fast speed so we're concerned about the marshalltown community right along i-80 in between newton and grinnell solely montezuma right now pella oskaloosa right along highway 92 there you're starting to experience a very strong winds and we're talking 80 to even 90 per hour wind gusts being reported with this very severe thunderstorm that brought down trees and led to some roof damage fort dodge you're just experiencing rainfall as well as algona and again things will calm down i think around the noon hour at least in the city of des moines as these storms move rapidly off to the east but just imagine areas to the east will experience the storm at its peak only because they're warming up right now why while we're experiencing this rain-cooled air so i do think this storm will continue to be strong for these communities marshalltown bell plain montezuma and oskaloosa i'm looking through some of the social new social feeds that are coming in with people posting some pictures trevor nelson this is on max2 he just shared a picture with us that i have up on max 2 of some hail on the ground this is outside of garden city southwest of hardin county so again there are some areas where we may actually be seeing a bit of some hail so if once the storm passes if you have any damage pictures that you can share with us feel free to put them on the on the uh our facebook pages we would love to see that um there we go there's max too so hail just in the grass there everywhere and again just covering the ground up in hardin county so that's in parts of northern iowa jerian's been showing you that pocket where we've been watching where maybe there's potentially some hail as looks to stay primarily up in the northern part of this this section of this severe thunderstorm and in fact on max 2 excuse me let's go back to max 1. you can see some areas of some of that hail potential again closer to that hardin county area closer to the iowa falls area still could see some hail falling just to the west of marshalltown as well but the more wider spread issue with the storm is the wind that's what really we expected the most damage to come from and that's what we've seen take place so um jerriann did you share this knoxville wind report no okay yeah knoxville had a wind report just recently in the last few minutes of 71 miles per hour um yeah lots of trees down pear and apple trees stripped of some of their crop on the trees unfortunately in the grimes area okay there's 25 000 people in central iowa without power as well so not totally surprising especially with trees and branches oh thirty thousand okay thirty thousand people in des moines are without power right now that's not surprising because of all the tree branches down on power lines and that sort of thing um it is going to knock out power so hopefully you have your phones charged up and you can watch us uh through our website of course live stream always there that is available so how's that storm progressing jerriann on the rapidly off to the east still capable of producing some significant damage as it continues to bow out and produce some very strong winds capable of flying debris and leading to some damage we want you to be in your safe spot away from the windows hopefully not on the road if you are on the road listening to us on the radio right now we want you to pull over especially along i-80 in between newton and as you get closer to iowa city these storms are moving fast at a speed of around 60 to even 70 miles per hour off to the east here's the latest on the severe thunderstorm warnings and again these are in effect until noon today this yellow box jasper marshalltown marion polk county powersheet story tama and warren county until around noon just to the north the storm not quite as strong but still capable of some strong wind gusts severe thunderstorm warning in effect for grundy hamilton and hardin county until noon and i don't want to forget about our friends to the south and east here this yellow box these communities continue to experience very strong wind gusts as well heavy rainfall i saw a report out of lamoni of some strong winds and these are near elbia centerville corydon a severe thunderstorm warning for apenneus decatur lucas mahaska marion monroe wapolo warren and wayne counties if you're just joining us right now we're breaking into your coverage because of the severe thunderstorm warnings lots of sirens going off earlier around the city of des moines due to the very strong winds and unfortunately we did see significant wind damage thankfully we're not hearing any injuries from this but the strongest storm at this point is located east of i-35 moving off to the east hey brett don't take that off on max two can we go to take max two if possible this is a picture of some wind damage from some of the grain bins and this is at uh near minburn so a lot of wind damage there blowing into those those uh those grain bins just shows you the power of them so let's jump back on max one and we can take a look at the progression of this i'll jump on here and durian's helping drive the radar again places like grinnell 11 45 it is right there coming at you right now you're going to see some very intense winds of 70 to 80 miles per hour oskaloosa used to have about 15 minutes before this storm arrives it does have a history of extensive tree and branch damage as well as roof damage in many communities that it's already moved through and it's headed to your area right now in oskaloosa and uh brett is asking that we go over to max too so if we can take max oh this is video oh this is the bucks arena isn't it yep this is bucks arena from whitney blakemore so again this is about an hour ago right around 11 11 30. wow so the roof came off the bucks arena if you were not watching us at that time the roof came off whitney's mom was sheltering inside the building at the time yeah and she said that's how they knew the roof was gone because it was raining inside the building you couldn't you know see the extent of it but once yeah they knew there was big problems the roof came off there's if you're driving along hickman by the bucks arena today you're going to see a lot of roof uh on the roads and and that sort of thing so this this is really unfortunate for the bucks arena so i hate to see that we'll go back to radar and you can see on the eastern side of the state that's where the storms are now moving we're just going through the areas that need to be taking cover now bellplane 1210 ottumwa 1229 you're down here on the southeast end of this extensive rainfall as it moves in and then cedar rapids through 12 43. jerry and one thing i noticed when you had the warnings pulled up those warnings extend further south than this storm it looks like and i'm assuming it's because of wind concerns oh yes typically we're seeing the strongest part of the storm it can redevelop just to the south of it and right now we're seeing very strong winds in between sheraton and oskaloosa these are moving east right along i-80 and we still have some hail definitely indicated on radar right around marshalltown with some blinding rainfall these winds are moving all in the same direction at a speed of 70 to 80 miles per hour that is strong enough to uproot trees and bring down power lines and lead to a dangerous situation these storms pass through the city of des moines about an hour ago leading to significant damage we really don't want you driving around things have calmed down in des moines right now no more severe thunderstorm warnings are in effect but we still want you to stay put until crews can get out and clean up those power lines because it is a mess unfortunately we did get heavy rainfall from these storms lots of thunder and lightning and obviously the strong winds are the greatest concern right now and while we're talking about the southern edge of that thunderstorm there we've got the warning pulled up the lamoni airport reported a 60 mile per hour wind gust so the reason that warning extends even past the edge of the storms we can't see it on radar but places like garden grove in toward corydon in the southern edge of the state there's a gust front there that is separate from the storms you can maybe just see a couple of ripples of very light blue there on the radar but there could be 50 to 60 65 mile per hour wind gusts all the way into northern missouri in fact those warnings extend into missouri so that gust front is capable of producing damage now even displaced from the thunderstorm yeah so those thunderstorms aren't actually moving the thunderstorms themselves may not be felt there in places like allergen or centerville but they're going to get those very strong and damaging winds down through even the southernmost counties of our state blowing off of this very intense complex of storms moving through our state right now lisa you uh you were just telling me something that i think you guys had of 15th street all right you guys have a video or or a picture of that i think or you there we go so this is 15th street in des moines i'm assuming oh ames sorry sorry we got a lot there's a lot of damage out there all over central iowa so here it is okay so this is 15th street in des moines this is going to be a very common site it is going to be difficult to get out and about central iowa and the metro area today because we have trees and branches down all over the area so now before we went to this jerry and it looked like we had a new warning that was issued further further east so we're getting even more out of central iowa yeah it's a severe thunderstorm warning now for blackhawk grundy hardin and tema counties and that will be in effect until 12 45. i'm going to pull up the warning here details for you as the storm tracks off to the east at now a speed of 55 miles per hour but as we've been talking about the greatest concern is these damaging winds 60 to 70 we've had reports 80 to even 90 miles per hour that is strong enough to lead to some significant damage and there is numerous quarter-sized hail and heavy rainfall reports coming in this is out of carlisle and warren county and this is from 11 16 so almost an hour ago now but lots of tree damage around carlisle lots of people reporting damage many of you may be saying how it feels like a tornado just went went through my community with wind speeds at 70 plus miles per hour it will feel like you've been through a dramatic storm and it can lead to unfortunately some devastating damage as well in between iowa falls and right around grinnell right now is where we do have heavy rainfall i want folks around bell plain oskaloosa bracing themselves for these really strong winds that are now starting to move out of the newton community we also have very heavy rainfall and some hail returns out of marshalltown as they continue to experience this very strong to severe thunderstorm if you're along i-35 right now you're through the worst of the storm the severe thunderstorm warnings are now east of i-35 and i'm going to go through all of these for you starting to the north just south of iowa falls we have a severe thunderstorm warning in effect until noon for the next 10 minutes for grundy hamilton and hardin county we also have this severe thunderstorm warning in effect until noon included in this jasper mahaska marion marshalltown powashik story and tama if we're saying your county we want you to be in your safe spot away from windows that means a basement is the best place to be we also have a severe thunderstorm warning still in effect until 12 15 for avenues decatur luca lucas county mahaska marion monroe wapolo warren and wayne you may be saying you've said my county twice that's because the northern edge is in a severe thunderstorm warning as well as the southern edge now these storms are getting closer to cedar rapids and that's where the severe thunderstorm warnings remain in effect until 12 45. okay marshalltown now coming in oh my goodness with the peak wind gusts close to 100 miles per hour so we have some very strong winds still with this storm located around marshalltown and that came in at 11 50 about two minutes ago and unfortunately it looks like marshalltown's not only seen the 100 mile per hour wind gusts but also some hail and some very heavy rainfall at this point i'm going to track this storm here for you west des moines a train spotter reporting a 70 mile per hour wind gusts that was a delayed report again a severe thunderstorm warning as we just talked about still in effect for jasper and mahaska county and that will be in effect and has been extended until 12 30. at around 11 52 the line was right around conrad near brooklyn and oskaloosa it's now moving east at around 60 miles per hour but again a train spotter did report a wind gust right around 90 miles per hour this is a life-threatening situation you can expect flying debris this is capable of taking off a roof and uprooting large trees at this point and right now we're focused on marshalltown in between grundy center and marshalltown also grinnell and montezuma from you jerriann we are going to continue to watch this storm as it moves east along i-80 towards grinnell oskaloosa i saw a message from someone in newton who said this was probably one of the worst storms they've seen with those trees blowing around so if you are out ahead of this storm here it is moving out of the des moines metro area so now we have calmer conditions still some areas of rain still some rumbles of thunder but no severe thunderstorms in the des moines metro area right now the places that need to be the look on the lookout for these storms are communities that are in eastern iowa now again marshalltown you're seeing it grinnell again it's moving through newton right now oskaloosa this storm is just arriving in your area and it's going to continue moving to the east at about 50 to 60 miles per hour so places again oskaloosa we just said ottumwa at 12 21 and then into the cedar rapids area at 12 44. so this continues to move very quickly and it will continue to do wind damage as it moves along i-80 there are some thunderstorms developing on the back side of this but again they're not at severe limits the primary area of concern here now past the des moines metro area and moving out into counties further to the east and even out of our central iowa viewing area as it continues to move into eastern iowa southern iowa in our far southern counties you may not even see any thunderstorm activity but you will have very strong winds moving in we have our morning until noon so it is at 11 55 right now this goes for jasper mahaska marion marshall pow chic story in tama county that expires at noon then we have our warning to the south again for many communities here again this is primarily just a wind a warning of some strong winds moving in into southern iowa places like wayne county for example and then we have this larger warning here that extends further out to the east that does include iowa city in that area as well so again this warning right here goes until noon so it's about five minutes away unless they do decide to update this as the storm continues to push off to the east and jerry oh yeah brad another call in from some of my relatives around ames out on the farm numerous hundred year oaks down 50-foot evergreen tree and they lost a roof off of one of their morton buildings that they cannot find at the moment so they said it's either somewhere out on i-35 or in a corn field but they're they're looking for the roof and have not found it yet so our storm's going to keep moving east towards iowa city again this does have a history of producing 70 to 80 mile per hour winds so if you are in eastern iowa be prepared for this if you're here in the des moines metro area we still have some rain some thunder and lightning but not at severe levels but one of the biggest issues you're going to find out on the roads is that there's lots of tree debris around town albion wow okay that's marshall marshall yeah as a report of a 99 mile per hour wind gust that's from the sensor at the airport so we will have to look in to if that is totally accurate but judging by the fact that that warning has now been upgraded to 90 mile per hour winds i'm going to say that's probably pretty close from the folks that are keeping track of the maintenance on those things okay we're going to gather some new information and be right back with you with the latest on these strong to severe thunderstorms moving across central iowa and the latest on the wind damage when we return news at noon central iowa dealing with heavy rainfall and powerful winds this afternoon and wh-13 viewer amy williams johnson sharing this video with us from lake panorama you can see there just the waves on the lake and the strong wind there the storm then taking off the roof of the des moines bucks arena you can see there a large hole in the roof and tons of damage in the parking lot we're also reporting that this storm has caused widespread power outages across central iowa right now more than 30 thousand outages reported in the des moines metro area meanwhile up in fort dodge more than 6 100 people there without power good afternoon and thank you for joining us i'm jody long our meteorologists have been busy all morning long tracking these storms that have been blowing across our state we want to head right over to meteorologist jerriann ritter for the latest hey jerriann good morning unfortunately we did have significant wind damage across the state from the strong to severe thunderstorms and we're still seeing them blow through parts of eastern iowa so i want to start off here by showing you pictures from buccaneers and this was taken by whitney blakemore's mom there and you can just see the rain coming in as they lost the roof there at the buccaneers arena very sad situation let's go to radar right now so i kind of show you where the worst part of the storm is all severe thunderstorm warnings have been lifted for the des moines metro area we're still experiencing a thunderstorm just nothing that's producing 60 to 70 to even 80 mile per hour wind gusts the strongest part of the storm right now is east of i-35 still moving off to the east at a fast clip of 60 miles per hour and i need to point out this line here now just past grinnell so grinnell has made it through the strongest winds as well as oskaloosa and that is the line of the storms that continues to move off to the east at a fast rate and that's where we're seeing our strongest wind gusts at this point unfortunately unfortunately areas east of i-35 have been warming up and the storm will continue to be strong and cause significant damage the winds continue to move all in the same direction and that is what's leading to the trees coming down uprooting them i do need to go through the severe thunderstorm warnings here for you and show you who still is under a severe thunderstorm warning and i'm going to take off the radar so you can see here the city of grinnell still remains under a severe thunderstorm warning until 12 30. this includes jasper mahaska marion marshall powashik and tema county and also parts of south west iowa apanus lucas mahaska marion monroe wapalu wapolo and wayne county until 12 15. megan salwas been here all morning keeping track of the storm she has some new information yeah we just had some new information come in that actually shared that in story county along highway 30 there is significant damage even in the state center area and what caught my eye is that they're saying numerous cars were even blown off interstate 30 and are flipped in that area jerriann so this storm has a history of some extremely strong winds and it's continuing to move through eastern iowa yeah the strongest winds are past that community right now but several cities calling in to say hey please tell people don't leave your home right now that's because we have numerous power lines down and also large trees it's still a very dangerous situation so we want you to stay put just a reminder ames des moines you're not in a severe thunderstorm warning any longer but we're continuing to see these strong winds move off to the east at a fast clip of 60 miles per hour so these are some communities that will continue to be impacted also in this ottumwa williamsburg bell plain so they're starting to enter into eastern iowa at least some very strong winds and what we're seeing left over around the city of des moines is mainly just your garden variety thunderstorms thunder lightning heavy rainfall but we're finished with the extreme strong winds around the city of des moines but still we don't want you driving around we want you to stay put outdoors this afternoon tracking this storm alongside our meteorologists we want to head over to our political director dave price turned weather chaser dave price this afternoon he joins us live from the south side of des moines near southwest 30th and park street dave that image behind you there is just shocking we're west of flor and north of the airport so this is what's happened over the last hour or so and we've seen trees down all over the place for blocks in this area where no one has power where we are right now you can see where the tree has fallen over on top of the house here not only has it tipped over but you can see how the force of the winds uprooted this tree and knocked it over the power lines here drooping as we mentioned i'm not sure for how many blocks in each direction but nobody has had power for a while as the strong winds push through this area a few minutes ago there were a few people out here checking out the damage at this house now as you move across the street on park and if you go either direction on park here there's tree limbs and branches all over the place so it's very difficult to drive in this area for the most part the rain has stopped you could barely see when we first got here because it was raining so hard but in the background there you can see the debris that is scattered all over here and this is typical for the streets all around this area at this hour jody power's been knocked out but there's so much extensive tree and limb damage here falling on as we saw the house here people's yards sidewalks the streets it's tough to get around this area right now dave do we know if anyone was inside that home at the time when the storm blew through yeah we're not sure we haven't been able to talk to them we were looking for a safe place to stop here you have a lot of people trying to see what's going on the gawkers and everything taking video and pictures and that as we went through here and frankly when we got here the winds were still so strong it wasn't really safe to stand out here so we had to wait for that and to find a safe place to park as we were doing that then the person who was looking at the damage here took off so we haven't been able to talk to anybody from this area yet to find out exactly how this all happened all right and dave lastly can you just paint a better picture of what it was like as you were driving towards the south side i saw on your social media um a quick video snippet that you took and the rain was so heavy you could hardly see anything right and for the rec for the record i was not driving as we were sharing that video but yeah it was difficult to see you know the windshield wipers can only go so fast right we have family in florida and it's the type of storm that reminds me of what it's like in florida where it comes down so hard and so fast along with the wind that it's very difficult to see as you go forward we went up and floor numerous times because we heard so many reports of trees being down none of those businesses or homes over there have any power so that's one of the pressing concerns for a lot of families and businesses here but just the amount of debris that's so scattered a lot of times in a storm maybe you see it in one neighborhood perhaps where the winds move through but this is so widespread here no matter which direction we went northeast west south here it didn't really matter there was debris all over the place so this probably was one of the more extensive ones that we've seen so far since it fell on this home but the debris is all over the place at this hour yeah sure is dave thank you for your perspective there on the south side of des moines we are now going to check in with who 13's melody mercado she joins us from the east side of des moines at the iowa state fairgrounds melody you're there right now and what are you seeing yes hi jody from immediately what i'm seeing right now fortunately doesn't seem like there's any structural damage to any of the facilities right now that's on the fairgrounds but i will say there is a lot of debris on the streets in the parking lots you know many of our viewers have been to the fairgrounds there is plenty of trees in the area and as a result of that very heavy wind i'm seeing a lot of larger to medium-sized branches that are on the roads here they are definitely going to need a pretty good-sized cleanup effort one thing i do want to mention for all of our viewers on my way here i'm noticing that a lot of street lights are currently down so just if you are driving around although it's not recommended at this time just pay attention to those street lights making sure you're stopping making sure you know you're not just just driving straight through and i was taking university all the way to get to the fairgrounds another thing worth mentioning there is a lot of debris around university and 26th street so just to be careful and to make sure that your eyes are on the road if you are on the road but so far from what i can see here on the state fairgrounds a lot of debris but fortunately from what i can tell no structural damage at this time okay that is some good news trees and everything else can be cleaned up thankfully thanks so much melody we are now checking in with our chief photojournalist mike borland and who 13 samantha grenland they are in the beaverdale neighborhood near ashby park and samantha oh my goodness there look at that large tree there just split in half kind of paint a picture of what you're seeing around you yeah we're here in ashby park here in beaverdale i can tell you on the way here there's tree limbs down everywhere a lot of power lines down at least two or three different times i had to turn around so that i didn't drive over a downed power line there's leaves and branches out everywhere i've seen several different mid-american vehicles out a couple different squad cars i don't know i haven't heard anything of anybody being injured or whatnot right behind us here is another massive tree that was split into several pieces you can see it fortunately it doesn't look like it hit any houses or anything just kind of down in the area and just to the right of that is a power line again hit by another tree so there's tons of destruction all over the place also trash day in a lot of these neighborhoods so there's a lot of trash and recycling receptacles all over the street blocking roads a lot of trash and stuff all over the place there mike's going to show you some more downed power lines here and another tree limb that fell over this as you can see it's hard to get through a lot of these roads it was tough to even find our photojournalist here and find a place in order to get here because a lot of the roads are completely blocked so people are there's a lot of cars out here surprisingly trying to kind of navigate their way around the area lots of people turning around you can see there's a little bit of localized flooding nothing too bad i didn't run into any issues as far as being able to get through the way there but that's what we're seeing here again in ashby park in beaverdale tons of damage and that's about it yeah samantha grenlin reporting in the beaverdale neighborhood it's really hard to believe that this was not a tornado these were just winds exceeding 70 miles per hour jerriann we've been seeing this all across central iowa the worst of the storm is out of the des moines area but it's moving eastward yeah right now it's east of i-35 right now we do have some leftover thunderstorms right along i-35 but the worst part of the storm is just to the east in between oskaloosa getting closer to cedar rapids and waterloo i want to go in close here and go through a few of the severe thunderstorm warnings for you all those areas shaded in yellow remain under a severe thunderstorm warning not included in this is ames in des moines that doesn't mean it's safe for you to leave your house right now we're getting several reports from numerous towns and cities saying please have people stay put with the power lines down and large trees down all of these boxes represent communities that experience 70 to even 90 mile per hour wind gusts and significant wind damage the highest wind gusts so far reported was at the marshalltown airport we also had close to an 80 mile per hour wind gusts in between ames saylorville reporting close to 80 miles per hour and in colfax around jasper county and 80 mile per hour wind gusts i do want you to know that the storms will continue to weaken within the next hour we have some thunder and lightning across northern iowa and some leftover rain showers in des moines but by 3 p.m things will be fairly quiet and tonight does look drier and far more comfortable we've got team coverage on these storms we'll be back with more of the wind damage and a look ahead to what's to come the rest of the week when we return all right we are now checking in with jeff greenwood with mid-american energy we have reported earlier in the show that 30 thousand people are without power in the des moines metro area 6 100 people without power in the fort dodge area jeff we want to talk to you right now just about uh kind of how your crews are managing to keep up with the widespread outages yeah i'll tell you what it's been an active morning and continues to be our numbers have jumped up now to more than 54 000 customers in the des moines area we've also got customers up north story county and north west of there the fort dodge area another just shy of 5000 we are still assessing the damage but we've sent crews out already we've got line crews and tree crews as well because in some cases we can't do work until we get those trees removed it's a hazardous situation if there's a tree on an overhead line so we are focusing on some of the lines the larger lines that can restore the most people as quickly and as safely as possible and then we'll start working on the smaller lines of course we also want to make sure that emergency services folks have power as needed and we'll focus on that right away if we get a report of that we want customers to know that if they do see a down line it's really important to assume that that line is energized even if you think it's a cable line or something it can still have crossed with a power line don't touch that line don't go anywhere near just give us a call our number is 888-427-5632 we'll send a crew out and we'll make sure that it's done safely yeah jeff this is a process this is no quick fix and considering how many people are without power uh your your word to folks and customers who are without just be patient i'm afraid so i think this is going to take a significant amount of time to clear up we are still assessing so i don't have we couldn't possibly tell you that that this customer is going to be on at this time and this customer will be on at this time we are we're actually calling in extra crews this is one of those situations where we're getting a whole lot of activity at once that was just an awful storm that came through when you're talking about the 70 plus mile per hour winds it's just going to do a lot of damage and it has done that and these extra crews are coming from other parts of the state jeff or here locally well we are in the process of uh working that out right now so i i don't have a um an exact location for you on where they're coming from but i have a feeling we're going to be calling in some crews from from outside the des moines area anytime that we get an intense storm and and result like this we call in uh crews from outside the immediate area so we can get the power restored more quickly and of course what's paramount is is safety yes we are sending our thoughts to your crews who are out there with a long day's work ahead of them jeff greenwood from mid-american energy thank you for that we want to now head over to meteorologist megan salwa with the latest on this storm megan what can you tell us well the good news is jody that it is moving out of central iowa it is moving into eastern iowa so it will be drier this afternoon for cleaning up here in just a bit we do have calm conditions expected on tuesday but more spotty storms will be possible late week here are some of the pictures that you're sharing with us karissa bragg shared this photo from a tree down on a home in urbandale an urbandale neighborhood there and it does look like a pretty large tree there down on the garage end of that home so lots of wind damage and including this we had reports of jackknife semis we even had a report just recently on highway 30 near state center of cars flipped due to winds on highway 30. this is a picture of one of those tipped over jackknifes there on i-35 just north of stratfor some pretty scary stuff there and then laura richardson also shared this picture of us from the heartland co-op in minburn some very strong wind damage so i believe jerian do you have those wind gusts do you want to walk through those wind gusts i do let's do okay so jerry sorry jerriann has a look at the wind gusts that led to this sort of damage so jerriann what kind of numbers did we see yeah and i just checked out the latest rainfall totals as well and an inch plus across a good part of the state that's what we wanted we didn't want all these strong winds and i do want to stress the strongest winds are now moving to the east still severe thunderstorm warnings in effect in between waterloo and near oskaloosa at this point and those will be in effect for about the next hour included in it belle plaine and oskaloos and that's where we're seeing the strongest winds but here's a look at a few of the reported wind gusts and our highest coming out of marshalltown close to 100 miles per hour registered at the airport ames reporting 70 to 80 mile per hour wind gusts saylorville in polk county close to 80 miles per hour colfax and jasper 70 to 80 mile per hour wind gusts and in clive in polk county lots of small branches and we heard about the buckeyes arena being damaged from these strong winds as well still a lot of thunder and lightning and if you're scared right now we want you to be smart we just want you to stay put the strong winds are definitely now hitting eastern iowa and things will calm down across central iowa by 2 3 p.m and it looks just beautiful tonight thank you jerriann yeah conditions are definitely calming down across central iowa still some thunder and lightning in the area a temperature of 65 right now so the air has really cooled down because of those thunderstorms moving through but notice the wind gusts in the last half hour still yet upwards of 40 miles per hour but you can definitely tell where our front has moved through warm and humid air ahead of it feeding that storm it is 85 right now in oskaloosa but back towards perry we are at 64 degrees now this storm will continue just rocking right across the state about 55 60 miles per hour and then the winds within it are in that 70 to 80 mile per hour range and possibly even higher there has been more development of some rain and thunderstorms here on the back end of this weather system but the most severe weather is now in eastern iowa so if your friends in cedar rapids iowa city washington and fairfield let them know that they're going to continue moving to the east the rain continues to fall here in the des moines metro area but no severe storms currently and a steady moderate rain is falling in the northern part of the state this storm system will continue pushing into illinois and across indiana possibly even making it to ohio by later on tonight it's all right along this cold front that's worked through our state today but tomorrow will be much calmer high pressure in control quiet weather briefly but we have a boundary here that's going to set up into wednesday and that is going to be leading to a few spotty showers and thunderstorms so on storm path today drier weather tonight a calm evening but difficult to get out and about with those branches on the roadways and those trees we will have sunshine on tuesday but we will watch for those spotty showers and thunderstorms again redeveloping on wednesday and into wednesday afternoon but they do not look severe at this time so jody that's a look at what you can expect through the rest of the afternoon and over the next couple of days a much drier afternoon we're thankful for that but for now we're going to take a quick break from our team coverage and we'll be right back but after this
