Probably the craziest storm I've experienced, second to the Iowa City tornado in 2006.

ELI5. How am I 33 years old and have a keen interest in science but have never heard of a derecho before this? How common are these and how are they formed?
Just chillin in Cedar Rapids
One hit Nashville earlier this year. I was standing on my deck and I could hear it coming. Nothing then wham. I was protected but I still couldn’t stay outside to watch it because I got scared, and I grew up in Florida. I’m used to storms. Really scary. Ours was only 60mph but did a lot of tree damage.

Wish i could watch it, but since the storm my internet still isnt back up and my phone signal is still too spotty to load videos. Thankfully my house is ok though!

So watching this, my first thought was, what did the Native Americans do when this happened? I’m sure teepees didn’t hold up. Did they get on a horse and get out? Take shelter anywhere possible? Have a system for predicting this and getting out? Not live there at all?
