trust in your merciful love my heart will rejoice in your salvation i will sing to the lord who has been bountiful with me in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit brothers and sisters since we read the gospel of saint luke from the third sunday in ordinary time we can see how jesus shaped us to be his disciples and children on the third day sunday on the third sunday jesus proclaimed that he was the word of god then on the fourth sunday we heard that his people rejected him because they knew him as one of them only or human then in the fifth sunday jesus was also rejected by his first disciples peter knowing that god jesus is god then jesus lifted them as the officials of men then on the sixth sunday jesus gave them a set of checklists on how the disciples should live their lives through the beatitudes and then on this sunday the seventh sunday in ordinary time jesus tells us that as his disciples we must be compassionate as jesus is compassionate to us as well we will discover that the very heart of jesus that leads him to calvary brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done in what i failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen lord have mercy lord have mercy christ have mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy lord have mercy glory to god in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will we praise you we we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king o god almighty father lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god the son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer you are seated at the right hand of the father have mercy on us for you alone are the holy one you alone are the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father amen let us pray grant we pray almighty god that always pondering spiritual things we may carry out in both word and deed that which is pleasing to you through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the first book of samuel soul set off and went down to the wilderness of zif accompanied by three thousand men chosen from israel to search for david in the wilderness of ziv so in the dark david and abishai made their way towards the force where they found soul asleep inside the camp his spear stuck in the ground beside his head with abner and the troops lying around him then abishai said to david today god has put your enemy in your power so now let me pin him down pin him to the ground with his own spear just one stroke i will not need to strike him twice david answered abishai do not kill him for who can lift his hand against the lord's anointed and be without guilt david took the spear and the pitcher of water from beside souls head and they made off no one saw no one knew no one woke up they were all asleep for a deep sleep from the lord had fallen on them david crossed to the other side and halted on the top of the mountain a long way off there was a wide space between them david then called out here is the king's spear let one of the soldiers come across and take it the lord repays everyone for his uprightness and loyalty today the lord put you in my power but i would not raise my hand against the lord's anointed the word of the lord thanks be to god the lord is compassion and love the lord is compassion and love my soul give thanks to the lord all my being bless his holy name my soul give thanks to the lord and never forget all his blessings the lord is compassion and love it is he who gives all your gift who heals every one of your ills who redeems your life from the grave who crowns you with love and compassion the lord the lord is compassion and love slow to anger and rich in mercy he does not treat us according to our sins nor repay us according to our faults the lord is compassion and love as far as the east is from the west so far does he remove our sins as a father has compassion on his sons the lord has pity on those who fear him the lord is compassion and love a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians the first man adam as scripture says became a living soul but the last adam has become a life-giving spirit that is first the one with the soul not the spirit and after that the one with the spirit the first man being from the earth is earthly by nature the second man is from heaven as this earthly man was so are we on earth and as the heavenly man is so are we in heaven and we who have been modeled on the earthly man will be modeled on the heavenly man the word of the lord thanks be to god please then [Music] open our heart oh lord to accept the words of your son hallelujah the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you o lord jesus said to his disciples i say this to you who are listening love your enemies do good to those who hate you bless those who curse you pray for those who treat you badly to the man who slaps you on one cheek present the other chick too to demand who takes your cloak from you do not refuse your tunic give to everyone who ask you and do not ask for your property back from the man who robs you treat others as you would like them to treat you if you love those who love you what thanks can you expect even sinners love those who love them if you do good to those who do good to you what thanks can you expect before even sinners do that much and if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive what things can you expect even sinners lend to sinners to get back the same amount instead love your enemies and do good and land without any hope of return you will have a great reward and you will be the sons of the most high for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked be compassionate as your father is compassionate do not judge and you will not be judged yourselves do not condemn and you will not be condemned yourself grant pardon and you will be pardoned give and there will be gifts for you a full measure pressed down shaken together and running over will be poured into your lap because the amount you measure out is the amount you will be given back the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ [Applause] brothers and sisters anger is familiar to us all of us must have experienced anger in one way or another and that anger will lead to revenge to hurt others that is the primary responsibility of people and if we are being hurt that is how the world tells us to do to others who offended us however in the gospel jesus has different suggestions on responding to this situation does it mean that jesus has never experienced anger before and he did not care about others he is the primary example for those in forgiving one's enemy there is a book titled dead men walking written by sister helen prajin a catholic nun the book is about a prisoner sentenced to die because of the crime that he has committed the victim's family put their age towards the prisoner to take revenge even to condemn him to hell however killing others is not the way to freedom but towards it as written by sister helen forgiveness is the remedy in both old and new testaments forgiveness plays a central role for the people of god either god's forgiveness of his people or his people's forgiveness of one another in the first reading we've i think we feel that we are the same both as abhishei to kill soul who brought so many sufferings to the israelites however david did not kill him why because david remembers god he was afraid to offend god by killing soul because soul was anointed by god when he forgave soul and spread his life david becomes free of his anger and hatred and become worthy of the true king of israel that is the remedy in today's situation the hate the anger the unforgiving feeling brings death to the soul when we forgive we set free the prisoner who is ourselves more than that the cross has rightly become the symbol of forgiveness for christians throughout the centuries forgiveness is not optional for christ followers it stands a primary virtue that defines christian faith but that doesn't mean it is easy true forgiveness is not entirely possible apart from the work of the holy spirit saying like just forgive and forget it's not only the challenge of forgiveness but also adds additional guilt to people struggling to forgive those who have hurt them how can the people of god learn to forgive as christ has forgiven us forgiveness cannot begin until we recognize the name and confess the ways we have been heard and the ways that we have hurt others forgiveness takes practice becoming people of forgiveness requires our participation in the spirit-filled practice of forgiveness in the most challenging moments forgiveness occurs only when we have learned to forgive in the small moments forgiveness is not easy it takes work but it is one of the primary qualities that define us as christ's disciples it is not from the world it is sacred love your enemy do good to those who persecute you simply put these are the two of the most challenging statements that jesus ever said yet this command is one of the basic requirements of being a disciple of christ loving your enemy and doing good to those who persecute you are the basic responses of a christian disciple why would jesus demand such a high standard of his followers is not this kind of love and forgiveness extremely difficult almost impossible humanly speaking yes but with god all things are possible and the lord wants to transform our hearts to enable us to love others with the love he has for us this week's reading first reading and gospel reveal the kind of love that overcomes all things even hatred and fear the love of god that jesus reveals in his death and resurrection the fact that he loved he loved us even when we are his enemies in sin in the same love that we are followers of christ are to witness the entire world like our master and savior we conquer overwhelmingly with our love love is so radical that even to love our enemies if we listen to jesus carefully we will share in his resurrection as saint paul said to the corinthians mention that all will be renewed in christ which adam has felt and all of us as his disciples will be with jesus in the glory if we do what he has to do be compassionate as god is compassionate just then let us prophase our faith i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord who was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified and was buried into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of god the father almighty from there he will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of sins the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting amen be compassionate as your father is compassionate god's word disturbs us yet with faith in our god who saves us we pray for our needs and the needs of the world our response is lord show us the way lord show us the way david spared the life of saul the anointed one of god may we too be people of compassion aware of the dignity of others with whom we live in the community we pray to the lord lord show us the way may we model ourselves on god's recent son who humbled himself to share our human condition may we strive to be like him in how we live and what we value we pray to the lord lord show us the way may we forgive others as god forgives us returning blessing for curses from those who hate us and may we never be resentful but strive to live as children of our god we pray to the lord lord show us the way jesus commands us to be generous with time with money with affection maybe be people of love accepting and pardoning one another in the name of god we pray to the lord lord show us the way let us also ask modern mary to intercede for us as we pray hail mary full of grace the lord and blessed is the fruit of thy womb jesus holy mary mother god pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death amen please pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god in the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church as we celebrate your mysteries alone with the observance that is your due we humbly ask you that what we offer to the honor of your majesty may profit us for salvation through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always send every way to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for out of compassion for the waywardness that is ours he humbled himself and was born of the virgin by the passion of the cross he freed us from unending death and by rising from the dead he gave us life eternal and so with angels and archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the hosts and powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as without and we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy day for these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be brought out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and join our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles simon the zealot and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever amen at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope in the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you always and with your spirit let us offer each other the sign of peace lamb of god you take away the
