passionist community today is february 21st the first sunday of lent our presider today is father enzo so if you have your prayer guide take it out turn to page 61 the beginning of mass and let us begin our celebration all these forty days for us to fast teach us to overcome our sins and close [Music] did the victory win [Music] in the name of the father and of the son of the holy spirit the lord be with you and with your spirit brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries lord jesus you raise us to new life lord have mercy lord jesus you forgive us our sins christ have mercy christ have mercy lord jesus you feed us with your body and blood lord have mercy lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen let us pray grant almighty god through the yearly observances of holy land that we may grow an understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever a reading from the book of genesis god said to noah and to his sons with him see i am now establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you and with every living creature that was with you all the birds and the various tame and wild animals that were with you and came out of the ark i will establish my covenant with you that never again shall all bodily creatures be destroyed by the waters of a flood there shall not be another flood to devastate the earth god added this is the sign that i am giving for all ages to come of the covenant between me and you and every living creature with you i set my bow in the clouds to serve as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth when i bring clouds over the earth and the bow appears in the clouds i will recall the covenant i have made between me and you and all living things so that the water shall never again become a flood to destroy all my mortal beings the word of the lord thanks be to god to those who keep your covenant [Music] your ways o lord make known to me teach me your past guide me in your truth and teach me for you are god my savior to those who keep your covenant a reading from the first letter of saint peter beloved christ suffered for sins once the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous that he might lead you to god put to death in the flesh he was brought to life in the spirit in it he also went to preach to the spirits in prison who had once been disobedient while god patiently waited in the days of noah during the building of the ark in which a few persons ate in all were saved through water this prefigured baptism which saves you now it is not a removal of dirt from the body but an appeal to god for a clear conscience through the resurrection of jesus christ who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of god with angels authorities and powers subject to him the word of the lord [Music] you lord jesus christ wisdom of god the father glory to you lord jesus christ of god the father one does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of god [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to mark the spirit drove jesus out into the desert and he remained in the desert for 40 days tempted by satan he was among wild beasts and the angels ministered to him after john had been arrested jesus came to galilee proclaiming the gospel of god this is the time of fulfillment the kingdom of god is at hand repent and believe in the gospel the gospel of the lord if you all remember when we celebrate the baptism of the lord we celebrated the solidarity of christ with our own illnesses with ours even us we're all of us sinners he was in line with the sinners to be baptized but after baptism after baptism jesus is drove as mark says into the desert by the holy spirit it's like he's pushed out into the desert and so today we kind of celebrate jesus who is in solidarity with us in in trial because once you're free with baptism then you have to learn how to live this freedom how to exercise this freedom so many times we understand freedom as i just do what i want or anything that passes you know through my mind or through my heart well meanwhile in the other gospels like matthew and luke we have exactly three temptations that are presented to jesus in the desert mark doesn't specify them while he's in the 40 days in the desert but they are specified in the gospel in the rest of the gospel like for example one of the temptation was the temptation of protagonism which means like to be famous at all costs well jesus was performing the miracles and every time he performed the miracles his he was becoming more and more famous at the point that he couldn't even enter into towns and when he multiplies the bread they even want to make him king and he kind of has to refuse all that he has to you know kind of purify that image because we all can fall in the false idea that we are at the center of everything and so it's not about us being protagonists but allowing god to be the protagonist the second temptation i would say is that of secular power and in fact as i said before like when especially when he multiplied the bread and the fish they wanted to give him a certain power and even that he has to kind of refuse that not because power is himself is bad but the way of exercising power and the third temptation is the religious temptation and we see this especially when jesus is in the garden and on the cross when he has to refuse his will in order to do the will of god now for us that will be a denial of freedom but actually it's the highest expression of freedom because jesus recognizes really what is true and what is good and what is the best not just for himself but for his brothers and sisters for us and so he sacrifices his life in order that we are all saved so that we can all enter into the kingdom of god together with him and that's why at the beginning during the temptations of the deserts in the gospel of mark it said that he was tempted by satan he was among wild beasts and the angels ministered to him it's like all of creation is all together in that moment and when we were able to live our temptations and to win them it's like we really live to the fullness our baptism and we don't have to fear any flood that may come in our lives because we're actually like the ark of noah altogether where we become a place a safety net for all those who need to be saved and we'll discover like to be ministered by the angels that will happen when i truly understand that i'm con i we exist in this world not to possess things for ourselves for our own ego but we put ourselves at service for others just like jesus did i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken to the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen with confidence in our loving god we begin this journey of lent placing our needs our prayers in his merciful hands our response is lord hear our prayer we pray for the church that throughout this penitential season we will be a community of faith who trusts in the forgiveness and mercy of god we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for all who have been abused and neglected especially women children immigrants and those most vulnerable in our world may they find healing comfort respect and hope we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for the intentions of our benefactors the intentions of our sunday mass faith community that will be placed next to the altar and for michael and patricia speesman for whom we pray in a special way at this mass we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer guard our strength we offer you these prayers and needs and those that you find in our hearts through brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty our father for the praise and glory of his name [Music] give us the right disposition so lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our during our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining 40 days from earthly food he consecrated through his fast to the pattern of a lenten observance and by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of miles so that celebrating worthily the paschal mystery we might pass over to last at last to the eternal paschal feast and so at the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim [Music] holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and everlasting covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith when we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim your death o lord until you come [Music] therefore as we celebrate this memory of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and nicholas our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints you who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be courage to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus [Music] christ lord jesus christ who set your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and
