Richard Kimble and now starring at quarterback for the 49ers Steve Young playing the role vacated by Montana last year young took them to the NIT title game but would heed the critics two thumbs up only a Super Bowl coming off the last year's season I feel like now it's good enough we know we got to do better it's about performance and not only how you perform but that you win every game - I'm gonna find out how good I can be [Music] we always have things to prove as a player you're always proving that you could perform and do well and that you can lead a team to championships on in that way you're always out doing that that's that's just the nature of the game [Music] baby sees money late football [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Cleveland stadium located on the shores of Lake Erie a beautiful night for football as skyline of a very progressive Midwestern City sellout crowd tonight in Cleveland stadium that means 78,000 Plus there will be rocking they love the Cleveland Browns and the 49ers in the Browns meet here in Cleveland for the first time since 1984 hello again everyone Brian Gifford along with how Michaels and Dan Dierdorf good matchup for you tonight both teams got off to a win and their opener a week ago the Cleveland Browns now in their third year under coach Bill Belichick one here with a great defensive effort over Cincinnati the 49ers won on the road what's new about that they beat Pittsburgh and they come in tonight at 1:00 and oh the Cleveland Browns make no mistake about it they are a better football team than they have been in the past and many people are picking the 49ers to do what they did four times in the 80s a mess win it all the Super Bowl but the 49ers al have been dramatically hit not only by Bay free agency but all of a sudden a rash of injuries Frank they are remarkably resilient if nothing else they are the first team in the history of football to have won 10 or more games over ten consecutive seasons no reason not to expect them to make it 11 in a row not only have they been good they've been glamorous the marquee names through the years Montana and young writes and Clark LOD and Craig and they've been able to withstand the loss of and/or injuries to all of those people and keep on rolling but tonight they are without the blood and guts of the team offensively a scrap iron guy Tom rattmann underwent shoulder surgery he does all the little things you have to do to win he'll be out for half the season it could have a very significant effect on the San Francisco offense that goes up against the strength of the Cleveland Browns their defensive unit a defensive unit master by Bill Belichick now in his third year dan and feely bill has more to work with this year than in the prior two almost all the way across the board al has this team improved and most noticeably it's a healthy quarterback that they have now Bernie Kosar who missed nine games last year broke his ankle he is all the way back offensive line wise they've been fortified by the addition of a rookie at center Steve Everett and it left guard from Atlanta Houston Hoover much better there defensively this team was already very very good they are now even better they've got jerry ball from detroit on the defensive line and pepper johnson has been added at the linebacking staff now this is a big game for the Browns make no mistake about it in big games you need big plays by big players for the Browns that's Eric Metcalf let's see being a break loose tonight and again Cleveland kicking off matched over to put it in the air the game is sold out the blackout has been lifted the San Francisco 49ers to receive and a great kick through the back of the end zone for the we'll begin after 20 yard line so like the crowd Stover is pumped up tonight and here come the 49ers Steve Young a truncated pre-season played in their first game in Europe then was heard in their second game against the Raiders with the fractured thumb but came back and went all the way against Pittsburgh last Sunday Watters and Mark Logan replacing Rassman in the backfield Taylor and right whiteouts Jones [Applause] upfront they get Harris farting back he was heard in the middle of preseason [Applause] we ranked preseason they begin sorry for three it'll be second and seven the Browns normally play they for three but they opened in a three for tonight with Burnett Jones and Michael Dean Perry then the four linebackers Brandon Mike Johnson pepper Johnson the X giant and Clay Matthews has played more games and linebacker than anybody in the history of the NFL walls and Mustafa Moore and Turner the secondary [Applause] the Minnesota Vikings [Applause] clip shown they send tailor and motion and out of a split back waters and he has taken down a full yard shy of the first down at the 28 yard line by Steve armoire a gain of five it'll be third down into a good shot right there of Ricki waters getting up and patting the head of Steve on Moore who knocked him out of bounds waters last game action was last week in Pittsburgh where he was ejected from the hit on the sideline and Ricky Watters I think right away [Applause] narration at one time [Applause] ejected and fined by the NFL third and along to the short drop the quick flip and this is Taylor and this is what Taylor does so well takes the short pass and turns what would have been maybe a five yard game into about a 20 yard game he's tackled by Turner and it's the first half near midfield at 21-yard pickup we've heard so many times the 49ers used the passing game like the run game high percentage stuff Steve Young is great at it they've been doing it into this man for a long time Bill Walsh before that is a good example of that a moment ago you get it to John Taylor it's a safe was around that was a three yard pass that's how far that ball went in the air three yards Taylor and rice can both do ethereal and here is Logan and he takes to the 49ers well half some different looks in the absence of Rathmann that time they had water squatted to the right gain of one matthews and perry converged on the hill one of the reasons you suspect that bill belichick is going through the 3-4 against the 49ers he had a lot of success with the three-four trying to take the tight end rent jones out of the game he had success in the late 80s and him 90 when he was with the Giants doing that he said because he guru he's a genius at defense and he is had tremendous effect with this defense particularly against the 49ers now Brent Jones second and nine can help out against Jerry Rice and John Taylor there is the missed tackle Mike Johnson award nowadays and sure tackle gives up about seven or eight more yards from the 37 yard line this is Ricky Watters and he fights his way down to the 32 a gain of five second and five we ought to keep track of the yards after the catch for the 49ers that last one by Watters that was a half yard pass that ball went a half the art in the air a good look there at Clay Matthews fighting off the block still has explosion that's the first thing that leaves your legs with age is that you make the play you're football more than anyone else in my offensive scheme and it looks like this is coming back [Applause] another bad break for the Browns they've had two bad breaks and one good one illegal motion number 68 in the offense five-yard edie king is the right tackle and the officials are saying that he rocked back just like we saw Jones here's King right here on the right side let's see if yep he moves under the rules that's a false start and it negates this long pass and run by Erik Metcalf so the Browns on this Drive have been the beneficiary of a an interference call against Griffin but they've had a drop by Jackson and an offsides it brings the play back and it's third down and 12 at the 33 yard line they almost moved again record here's MEC dance and this time he is sampled at the 30-yard line so you're looking at about a 47-yard field goal attempt and McDonald makes the tackle and here comes Stover the Browns were lucky yet King actually rocked back in his stance again and could have been flagged for a false start once again that's a top of your screen watch the move before the ball right there you see him come out Jones starts a little bit early on the left I wonder if victories over their last 162 James and continued in the second and compare that with baseball which plays that number of games with Steve Young throw on first and and over the middle fine Jerry Rice Browns they scored 17 points or less he's got his defense where he wants it to be Dan now he's working on the office but what he needs to do I agree with you and all that what he needs to do is win and that's I think he's what's closer to that than he has been in the past here's Logan picking up five there's another trademark of the Belichick team very few turnovers when you combine that with Bernie Kosar who doesn't silver in any interceptions they protect the ball very well you turn the ball over on Bill Belichick and you're down the road and the way they have improved I think most dramatically as far as helping this team win is the way they've improved they're off of line it has been the glaring weakness on this football team for years Bernie Kosar is a quarterback that needs to be protected up the middle and they have really solidified that offensive line and I think it's their biggest improvement and defense a43 in the past is throwing behind Jerry Rice into the third down and five Steve Young with an errant past there and you just kind of wonder how much that thumb does bother him they broke his thumb on the left hand he played last week against the Steelers was at a 240 yard day three touchdowns but he also had three interceptions and in all of last season they of course the deleting counselor Gannon a National Football League he only had seven all of last team you might be flying a little bit on 18 that's type of the guy's going to complain about he wants to be out there but I think he maybe was not totally third and five and and out of bounds up at the 44 yard line and typical 49ers you throw the past six eight ten yards downfield and then rice or Taylor or Brent Jones will tack on another ten or fifteen yards there's some good news for the 49ers they're all Pro right tackle is finally back in the lineup didn't play in the preseason missed the opener last weekend back ahead of schedule is Harris Barton one of the great offensive linemen the last week I feel like over the last we gotta still think we're at the same spot where we were three three four weeks ago Jerry Jones might have made contact with my people today but I still think it's the same answer is coming from Jerry the same question is coming from myself and we're not making any progress at all Emmett do you feel that the fact that the Dallas Cowboys are on2 has put you in a more advantageous position right now no I really don't think so cause I feel like Jerry's going to deal we still determined to perhaps proof is born and myself is still he has yet to make a legitimate offer to myself and I feel like until I get a legitimate offer there's no reason for me to actually to jump at any offer that he make far as I'm concerned the offers that he have made have been reasonably less than what Tom - Tom Thomas and the other guys across the way have been offered so I feel like I feel like we still have to stand still you have said you are prepared to sit out the season it's one thing to say that in August during training camp it's another thing to sixteenths of the way into the regular season are you as resolute in that stand as you were I still think I am I really believe that if the situation does not occur and where Jared makes us a better offer to myself I feel like I'm most I'm over main firm I'm gonna stand stand firm and perhaps take my chances again in February at the end of February in January perhaps next year and out of the trick in the restricted free agent market once again what is it like for you emotionally to sit at home and to watch the Cowboys and the Redskins last Monday and the Cowboys and the bills on television yesterday I think emotionally it's very frustrating for me to sit here sit at home and watch the games on television and see my see my teammates going out doing everything that they they have doing everything impossible to win the game and knowing that I can be that I should be there and I should be performing with those guys giving them I think that put it this way I really feel like the team is it's definitely going out and playing their hardest and doing everything in their power to win and and coming up short and I feel like if I could have been there I feel like I could have made a difference in some kind of way have you had any contact in the last few days with Jimmy Johnson no I have not and from what I saw last night on the telephone the telephone with the interview on ESPN and so on Jimmy seemed to be very frustrated and I feel for my coach because he's a great coach he doesn't deserve none of my teammates deserve to be put in a position that they are in there they're fighting hard they're doing everything and they power to winning ball games and I believe they're trying to much improved football team owner Art Modell at Bill Belichick go his way didn't go for a quick fix when he came here three years ago he said we're gonna build he's got the young he's got the middle he's got a couple of guys older he says you know they are they're on their way out and this is a good football team are watching tonight well and before we throw dirt on the 49ers a lot of people
