[Music] [Music] when the Astrodome in Houston Texas tonight it's the Oakland Raiders versus the Houston oiler the Raiders a team going through some very subtle changes and sparked offensively by the American football conferences number one quarterback after the first three weeks of play ten year veteran and Daryle Lamonica in the Oilers the Raiders face of team is being guided by one of the game's future superstars quarterback Dan Pastorini Pastorini now and only his second year is the AFC's number three ranked quarterback and he's of the game's new breed at that critical position big strong versatile and ABC's NFL Monday Night Football is brought to you by the gillette company makers of platinum plus we made the first blade and were still the first play by mercury cars that are built better to ride better mercury at the sign of the cat always a fascinating scene the top of the dome in the Houston Astrodome as we pan down to the gridiron itself and we're going to have another packed house from Monday Night Football game hello again everyone I'm Howard Cosell welcome aboard for still as I said another Monday night ABC NFL football game and we hope to have a lively contest tonight for a couple of very pertinent reasons first the Oakland Raiders need this game they must win it to move into a tie with the vastly improved San Diego Chargers and to be but a half game behind the Western Division leading Kansas City Chiefs in the American football countries and of course for the Houston Oilers new hope a new coach and a stunning upset a week ago over the New York Jets a victory for the Oilers tonight another upset would move them into a tie with Cleveland and Pittsburgh in the Central Division of the AFC just a game behind the Cincinnati Bengals who leave that division again tonight we'll be bringing you at halftime highlights of the big games yesterday and more stunning NFL upsets but right now to tell you in detail about the Oilers as only he can with his Texas cornpone dandy Don Meredith never said anything ugly about Jill Howard the Houston owners do have a lot of new things going for them I knew I had here's their new home you're terrible out the new coach I think it's the big thing here in Houston Bill Peterson brought in mark the owner but Adam from the neighboring college of rice has the new idea a new philosophy and he thinks the guy should have fun something else is new is the entirely new offensive line for Dan Pastorini work from compared to what it was a year ago this is pastor in his second year his Frank pointed out he's lost everyone knows he has all the equipment Pastorini is the one is the key tonight they beat the Jets last week they have a tough contest tonight they lost their first two contests but people in Houston want a winner they haven't had one in a long time in fact the memory of George Blanda stirs most people here the last time they were away when George Blanda was a quarterback so they're welcoming Glenda back in 10 and to tell about the rest of the Oakland Raiders besides George is my friend in yours call this Frank I'm good to be back in your state I talked about the Houston Oilers and tonight they play an Oakland Raider team and as Howard alluded to the fact they're going to have a tough time in their Western Division they had a tough time last year they were eight four and two on the year and well a lot of experts maybe have not picked it up this team has gone through some very subtle changes some of the great names you might remember from that Oakland lineup Carlton Oakes Ben Davidson Dan Connors Russ Ben Davidson is hurt but they will not be in that lineup tonight as a matter of fact the front floor of the Oakland Raiders averages 24 years of age they are a team that likes to create opportunities and they feel that youth maybe is a time now and so that's the way they seem to be going they have a fine offensive unit we spoke of Daryle Lamonica but they have great receivers and particularly in their big tight end number 87 Raymond Chester he is the man that Daryle Lamonica likes to go to when he gets down close to the goal line and then there is of course Fred Biletnikoff the all-american who played for the Houston Oilers new coach Bill Peterson and of course that was back in Florida State days for Coach Bill Peterson they are a team again that is going to have a tough time in the Western Division as I mentioned a tough time because the San Diego Chargers under Harlow Suvari is not going to pull this year they're a good veteran team and they're going to be there of course along with Kansas City and as Howard also mentioned the Oakland Raiders must win tonight to stay a half game off the pace of the Kansas City Chiefs and when you think of the Oakland Raiders well you can't help but think of one man and that would be George Blanda number 16 he's been playing this game for 20 years George bland who still does the kicking George planned his is the all-time leading scorer in the National Football League he has scored over 16 hundred and fifty points but more than that he can still come off the bench at the age of 45 and fill in for their lamonica what he has to so we'll be watching for George Blanda tonight that game the Oilers and the Raiders and will be ready for the kickoff right after this message of course you get one button color on Sears 19-inch color TV but you also get something a lot more important come I'll show you you get Sears testing for quality Sears service available nationwide and most important we'll take you the National Center for voluntary action the preceding announcement was brought to you as a public service on behalf of the National Football League in the Astrodome in Houston Texas the Open Raiders assembling on your right they won the toss they'll receive the kick from the Houston Oilers they are gathering number 88 is my more good backup night in where Raymond Chester who's had a few problems but he is expected to start tonight laughing deep number 28 and number 21 number 28 just activated is the All American from the University of Southern California Clarence Davis and number 21 is cliff branch cliff branch a nine three spreader who attended high school here in Houston Worthington high school and was the first Texas school boy to run at nine 300 skip Butler in his second year out of Texas of Burlington and we're about to get underway critical game for these Houston Oilers they can stay closed in their Central Division of the American Football Conference and perhaps even more so for these gentlemen Clarence Davis on your left 28 branch on your right 21 they're in that tough Western Division of the American Football Conference and we're about set to get underway it'll be a short kick that will be taken by branch hometown hero [Music] over 220 upset at the 23-yard line [Applause] [Music] [Applause] well the Oakland Raiders will take over first and ten branches dropped by number 32 Ward Walsh quarterback as we have mentioned Darrell Monica opens he will have a setbacks over 23 Charlie Smith Marv Hubbard number 44 the fullback the receivers are Fred Biletnikoff number 25 at number 87 the tight end Raymond Chester and number 49 the all-american rookie from Villanova might see any both wide receivers move out to the right gesture the tight in the bottom of your screen miss Charlie Smith [Applause] the all-pro heights safety for the Houston Oilers he may be the best strong safety in football he holds the all-time record for career interceptions returned for touchdowns nine he took fought back for touchdowns last year or one season record a truly superb play a gifted instincts and speed we'll be talking about him much of the evening and he immediately this put Daryle Lamonica the oakland raiders and passing trouble the ball at the 21 yard line both wide receivers gianni and Biletnikoff go right siani is in the slot lobotomy distrained Lamonica lookie feeling the pressure fires after how many can't hold on [Applause] back there with Ken Houston and that secondary a young secondary Willie Alexander was defending against Amara Hubbard he's the left quarterback number 19 John Charles number 25 is the free safety and Vinnie Johnson is the right cornerback he is number 33 and Zeke Moore number 22 is also available for the Oilers this evening at the linebackers you haven't heard a lot about him you'll hear a lot about him tonight number 58 Ron Prichard is in the middle lloyd wright's under 85 is on one side number 90 the great George Webster on the other third down and called it a long 12 the ball at the 21 and a half yard line Alanna with the slight roll the moving back complete the Biletnikoff over the party to the 44 yard line down there by number 33 Benny Johnson but Fred Biletnikoff the all-pro gets the open Raiders out of trouble first and ten Oakland just short of the 45 yard line market up to 44 look at it again you see it just a wide open in the middle of the curl in Frank Biletnikoff came in from that slot position on the outside the moving pocket that you suggested put him almost directly affordable again both wide receivers Yanni Politico arrives in this is Meyer Hubbard our Hubbard met and missed at the line of scrimmage by number 85 Floyd rise to finally drop by Leo Brooks number 73 Brook soutine's with Tillerman at one tackle Tillman 78 at Holmes a defensive left in 79 Elvin bathia 65 the defensive right in second down of five a gain of about five recovered the ball now resting at the 49 yard line Sani now comes out to be met there by Betty Johnson going out to the right Biletnikoff picked up by Willie Alexander [Applause] thanks Ivers Charlie Smith and he'll be very close to the first down the Oh Brooks and Mike Tillman Delavan 78 in on the stop as they bring in the new football Frank you'll remember that in their first two games against Denver and Miami the opposition ran very effectively against Houston's defensive front four however the Jets did not do so and as you suggested early in number 58 as they measure hit for the first down Ron Pritchard will be heard up tonight and often they've moved him to the middle where he truly belongs as you see there short by that much and he's truly an extraordinary athlete [Applause] this telecast is presented by authority of the Houston Oilers football club it's intended for the private use of our audience any rebroadcast or other use of this telecast without the express written consent of the Houston Oilers football club and the National Football League is prohibited well you saw how much Daryle Lamonica need 44 Marv Hubbard is leading rusher of the year ago number 23 Tyler Smith [Applause] 49 and Smith gets a call he gets the first down and almost has the ball turn away as he moves inside Houston 45 yard line Ron Pritchard there to make the stop first down Oakland Charlie Smith the lad from Utah was of course out most of last season injured and his return this year is one area of improvement for hopeful cause Alday vista managing partner of the raiders whom some contend is really the invisible coach still moans over the loss of warren wells a great wide receiver beginning smith back has to be something he's got to be happy about fine ride your service standing Biletnikoff go right lamonica with the play fake he wants to go deep by the receiver now he's right that the Ronnie pulls up [Applause] [Music] in Houston he was trying to go deep that last play Frankie at a man he thought was open it was a good kiss it played by the two safeties Houston kid Houston and John Charles they both had him covered inside out you might say it was Mike's Yeti the guy he had deke for that last play Mike siannie of course the number one pick for the open raiders and great college player pulling over 33 touchdowns and that's only one off and c-double-a record not too fast for good move second down a 10 houston oilers away in the Astrodome in Houston Oilers on the Raiders becomes Charlie Smith dealers the course to play Willie Alexander but at home 79 moved out from his defensive in position to make the stop enough about to pull it along to the 41 we're down a passing down pat holmes is the oldest man on the defensive unit once one of the most highly regarded defensive linemen in the old american football league and even played in canada before he joined the Oilers some feel he's over the hill but Peterson and his staff still feel he's effective the balanced formation now third and passing from this formation of Monica likes to go to his tight end Raymond Chester moving pocket going for CNT without bound by number 33 Johnson lamonica just had to throw it away penny Johnson by the way has been one of the most maligned players on the Houston team suddenly last week he became a here with the game-saving interception against yo all right and coming on is the grand old man number 16 George Blanda who guided these Houston Oilers championship back in 1960 football in 1949 with the Chicago Bears little linebacker duty and something else and it won't be closed john charles so bringing it back out to the 20-yard line made the stop on Charles so Houston will have their first opportunity Dan Pastorini opens of quarterbacked the second year man out of Santa Clara Willie Rodgers one setback he's 34 the rookie from Kentucky State so effective a week ago against the Jets Boyle bronze a the other sets back he's number 32 one wide receivers the otherwise we see the album read less torini on the very first play and he gives it off this time to Rogers Rogers looks like it is going to break nailed there by tony klein number 8520 klein that he since he left in our Tom's left tackle in over 80 Otis sister on the right tackle number 60 Horace Jones 82 the right defensive end some of the inside stories on these players and how they're obtained a very interesting Houston and Denver and the New York Jets are in a Scouting Combine the Jets considered drafting Willie Rodgers and felt that he wasn't quick enough mentally to suit their purpose last week 68 yards rushing against that just defense again it [Applause] 50 now Johnson who shuffles along with Bronte and Rogers bringing the plays in bill Peterson the coach calls all the offensive plays for the Oilers now out goes al Johnson and incomes boy Rogers both move out to the left down at about six the ball three 25-yard line just short of the 25 that's torini looking to throw [Applause] back there depending as he has for so many years number 48 mio Wilson all was there the owner just missed it you'll see it turn in last 3ds this means strong points is his ability to rifle that fault yet that was right in the head coach Peterson last night said that's one of his problems a year ago it called Bob as interceptions and alternatives like this he was a little hesitant okay Dan Pastorini getting set to punt punt to Atkinson 43 Brad's 21 Morini 47 yard average coming into the night's game gets off a beauty [Applause] 53-yard buttons no scar and the early going in the first quarter the Oakland Raiders in the Houston Oilers and we'll be back to the Astrodome right after this message [Music] [Applause] [Music] why had he sent Herman I had a strange feeling I would soon find out well Monsieur Chateau de Malaysia we schedule tacticity awkward with a 15 mm mwah rasca visit the pre-wash world ramon desu kedo promise [Music] their plan layout [Music] this is yoga in Zambia listen to us Cavuto hungary on the show you're sure the c2 t song in what deck I am because I only took one year of French in high school skittle Tac Toe by Aurora what fun is the name of the game you could say that thus far Monday Night Football has brought a little up to the raiders will have them later in the year when they go up against the New York Jets the tinnitus the Houston Oilers and a Houston oiler team that it certainly surprised the New York Jets last week and surprised I think even themselves the other is first and ten they'll move from their own 22 yard line vista geral Monica the handoff goes to Marv Albert covered over the 25 to the 27 staff elven Sathya and number 58 Ron Pritchard my Hubbard the story of this young man he left of the raiders couldn't make it couple years ago went back and led the Atlantic Coast Conference of Hartford and Russian came back big last year second down and three [Music] writers Robert again I'm very driving over the 35 to 36 the other 65 [Music] definitely the work are still open back deal Frank last year he carry the ball 100 and a little over a hundred and eighty times his longest run was twenty yards and tells a couple of things that he founds out on a short yardage he's not really a breakaway runner but he's very consistent he's the guy they call him to get that necessary yardage when they need it and he gets the first down at the 36 yard line of the open Raiders this is Charlie Smith behind the blocking of Marv Hubbard he moves over the 40 to the 42 and the Raiders consistently grinding out yardage and again Ron Prichard number 58 four years out of Arizona State is Ron Prichard we saw him a year ago Howard as you recall is an outside linebacker he was number one draft choice a few years back when done postman was the general manager he had done always intended him to play in the middle at that time garland Boyett was playing in the middle he's the second sprinter now second down and three off the 42 yard line of the Raiders becomes Charlie Smith breaking to the outside and Pritchard again makes the stop but it'll be close to the first down Ken Houston 29 also coming up very close to the first down [Music] mentioned that tommy smith that had some injury problems he broke his arm hopefully years ago and prior to that he had gained over 500 yards in every season and they reentered that same arm last year I can help not only good runner he's a good receiver all right we see Bob more number 88 coming in on the short yardage offense for the Oakland Raiders out comes Mike see any what more is gonna be heard from a lot in his career he's a first-rate athlete in fact the rate is tied with the idea of making Raymond Chester a running back so they could get more into the lineup and avail themselves of two tremendous young talents it changed their mind no because they've got so many good running backs to begin they're both in there now Bob Moore and Raymond Chester the bottom of your screen third down and about a foot the ball at the 46 yard line of the Raiders and here comes a Marv Albert have the first down get there by the middle of the Houston line added by 65 Alvin de Thea miss Frank said he's got the first down and talking about the possibility of making Raymond Chester a running back Oakland's got a history of doing that with tight ends dandy you know they did it with your at Dixon Haley Kevin [Applause] Raymond Chester 63 and 225 pounds and we'll see him very shortly I am very sure of that first and ten for the Raiders at the 42 yard line [Music] [Applause] Willie Alexander up to make the stop a Biletnikoff finding the big holes in that zone he is the cuties the three of us at dinner with Bill Peterson last night we were kidding bill the Houston coach we said nobody in the country can know as much about Biletnikoff as you build you annamund college he said well I could never believe the catches he made there and then he proceeded to tell us the freakish way in which he got him at Florida State because fred was an Erie high school flattened Erie Pennsylvania and somebody wrote a letter about him to the Florida State physical education department and now cliff brash number 21 the rookie from Colorado is in and replacing Mike Ciotti so Charlie Smith breaking tackles moving inside the 30 [Music] what is the physical education department do they brought the letter since you've brought it up so we can finish the story they brought the letter depleted he said well let's take a look at the boy let's get some film footage he said I looked at the flood footage of the lad in high school game and all he did was scored seven touchdowns in one game next thing you know he was at Florida State and four years later signing a contract with Al Davis right on the field while at the 30 second down and four Souths left this is Charlie Smith [Applause] number 29 Guinea has been coming up reading the side hand blocking down and up became the bank to tackle actually behind the line of scrimmage it's a good point how he got there Frankie plays defensive safety and he made the tackle actually hidden behind the line of scrimmage the defensive facts of all the defense people do try takeo certain offensive maneuvers and the tight end is the men the strong safety generally key zone he was blocking down on the defensive end and linebackers and laban go to the backfield third down along to the ball at the 28 of the Houston Oilers the Raiders moving Manik on third and two dropping [Applause] [Music] Kivar shell was held and Athiya Elvin bathia number 65 we are peppering you with information tonight about these houston players because Houston's players quite frankly don't get the big publicity that often they haven't had that many national appearances but Alvin's Athiya is a player of absolute excellence and everybody in the National Football League knows it one of the best in the league his position Celeste George Blanda dries from the 41 yard line he'll be close it's good on your but he's still again [Applause] Raiders out in front of the Houston Oilers three to nothing we'll be back after this message five of the finest cars in America on the 1973 Continentals we previewed them for these men and women who last may judge the ride test between the 72 continental and the other 72 luxury car these judges all own the other luxury car yet 60 out of a hundred of them picked the Continental over their own native car let us show you our 73 as they saw them our Lincoln Continental four-door sedan and coupe aid designed for an even more comfortable ride than our 72 our 73 Lincoln Continental Town Cars the sedan the Newtown coupe a the 1973 Continental market or newly minted silver introducing the 1973 Continentals it is a very good year [Music] [Applause] even the astrodome Don you got Top Billing I'd say that home down that's a whole group of folks that flew in from Oakland that's one section of Oakland Raider boosters and you actually don't see that too often in professional football but they've got the pom-pom girls down there the lot of the black and explicit black and silver I guess with their colors that would be a hundred or so and this is Terry - boy stur getting ready to kick deep number 21 we run it back for the Houston Oilers is Lindsey Cole number 34 is boy rock this one will oh it does not go out of bounds it goes into the end zone taken there by Willie Rodgers that's back Houston well they Roger is the Ricky from Kentucky State NC double-a college football continues this Saturday on ABC with three telecasts the majority the nation will see Texas Oklahoma while will also be telecasting Arizona New Mexico and Citadel at East Carolina where a good friend of yours and mine Don Sonny Randall Asst coach he has undefeated team there as a matter of fact as Citadel in East Carolina you can check your local listings for the time of the game of your area Dan Pastorini brings up the Houston Oilers first contender move from the 20 it comes a draw play [Music] the outside first down crochet interesting to see Cronje back here in the Astrodome where he's always been a favorite they got him out of Mississippi State he's never had the speed he's never been much more than a journeyman fat yet he's always been an outstanding blocker they traded him the New Orleans New Orleans cut him it looked like his career was over back here he came and he's doing a good job blocking and in a situation like that while the past a man would have gained more oil still the where the hole was and cut to it as quickly as possible Willie Rodgers right double-o is in barrow first and ten ball the Houston Oilers [Applause] Rajai stop there by number eighty art Thomas about that front floor of the Oakland Raiders Tom twenty five years old Tony client 84 the left end is 24 years old Horace Jones the right end is only 23 years old Sistrunk didn't even go to college Otis Sistrunk number 60 he's 25 years old and he's a great story which will develop later Frank the way the rain has got him all right second down and ten the ball at the 33 yard line howdy Walters trail the Oakland Raiders free to nothing 2:11 remaining in the first quarter an action on the right side were they drawn off or did they just jump flag us down Willie Brown number 24 the Great Hall pork all-pro cornerback comes in obviously the Raiders were drawn outside the legal procedure indicated Jack Tatum was also in that secondary he's the free safety number one pick of a year ago all-american from Ohio State he's number 31 we've talked about George Atkinson number 43 he's the strong safety Nehemiah Wilson may be the smallest corner back around at six-foot 180 pounds he's number 48 and they right now anticipate the passing of Dan Pastorini second down and 15 the ball at the 27 [Applause] srini Willie Rodgers dropped well hate him couldn't hold on to it that's a double zero and I fought this we talked about it a little bit last week watching John raises Philadelphia bro both of these guys Reeves pasture a lot of young quarterbacks they've got good strong arms he really rifled that ball I'm not saying it was not catchable but the ball was thrown hard you saw it bounce off the shoulder pad and actually should have been intercepted two other things that the young quarterbacks really have learned is that as a matter of touch or feel of how hard to throw that ball in the different areas that's so high the Tatum Canal third and 15 now 28 the ball will go in the air again girls left join it to the right [Applause] number 89 Elvin Reid bill Peterson on the sidelines will now have to put his punting unit back into the ballgame dan is not yet throwing well tonight and ian sefferman he's got great receivers the problem with the best to join earlier the Charlie missed was the fact that it was thrown too hard to in my opinion charlie Joyner in the opinion of most has the capacity to be another Paul Warfield Alvin Reid is a fine tight end and of course connect any borough double zeros come into his own here with Houston on your left George Atkinson 4321 the rookie cliff branch block mr. eeny had to hurry [Applause] [Music] right enough right there the referees say bring it back they can be assured of a couple of things [Music] [Applause] I want to get a close look at this street we've seen a number of things happening this year what they're saying is they cannot advance it in the air Oakland's always involved in some kind of decision or other and Al Davis is always one of the biggest complaint is about official he's the guy who got the break on the Jack Tatum hundred four yard run that block Duncan of the league office later admitted the official said blow and that was the play that gave Oakland its victory over Green Bay we got to get an official ruling on this but because I don't understand that either I don't first and ten the Oilers referees screen makes one way to the 25 thereby number 60 owners Sistrunk all right we'll take a look at this is the punt well I'll go you see a fair catch and yet he catches it in the air now I don't know the rule that is be really hot he's very honest I don't either back to me he oughta be able to run with it it's a bubble that she gets in the air but I deadly it has southern ooh with the fair catch all right we will get you the official ruling the ball now first and ten for the Oilers they're at the 25-yard line of the open Raiders they trail three to nothing time running out of the first quarter nobody Rogers met there by Nehemiah Wilson [Applause] [Music] and of about three yards for Willie Rodgers this Houston team is not an interest there had decided underdog they figure to be they don't forget to win this game but they've got interesting spots of strength as we've pointed out they've got excellent line backings strength we'll be talking later about a youngster named Floyd Rice at the corner with the chance to become a superstar good defensive secondary and certain offensive values especially in the receivers we've discussed in young Pastorini second down along seven the ball at the 23-yard line Pastorini back [Applause] Pastorini is not settled down yet the others are team though that is not a first quarter team that we'll talk about in a moment let's look at it again Atkinson the others giving him room to handle the ball and as always required on a fair catch Willie Rodgers taking it in the air and return the ball all the way to the 25-yard line where right now it's third down seven yards out to the left go skinny burles picked up there by Willie Brown on the right side Alvin reads a tight end in this passing situation both packs circling out yes in and out of the hands of George Atkinson and believe me Granger Roche was really lassoed as he came around the end elephant read it's really putting on a storm here watch number 89 he complained to the officials to no avail look at my look at that that's what you call infractions I don't blame them you know in ruling on that don't you done yeah I do that's the diffraction that's what you call that one that's they miss one well they can't see everything skip Butler on for the placement he'll fix about the 28th 1/2 year [Applause] let's get the official call here illegal procedure [Applause] so that will lengthen the field-goal attempt to skip butler let's watch this gif but look kick very closely done he kicked for against the Jets there had always been a rap against him on his field goal kicking that he kicked to low that it was too easy to block against Jen didn't find that - last week gift all right get next - hold the ball now at the 33 and a half yard mark lots of the last image this time and while they figure this one out we will tell you the official rule you cannot advance a fumble punt in the air or on the ground this call them up as a matter of fact [Music] well is that different I wonder from just a foam over the last scrimmage it's the Adele roof or that one huh it just because as the punt break is that what it is a pot and when it's hard ball is called a muffed you cannot advance those left let's don't get into section baby and see of it okay we got some more mixed up down here let's see what else is happening he's waving at us hope somebody didn't take something okay 51 Everett heaven was they didn't handle it I think the legal procedure ruled against both ball clubs but let's call it I can guarantee you the arms a referee Bob Fredrick are exhausted look at the coaches that's custom here we go again well more 10 now they got it worked out [Applause] it's fourth down I caught that [Applause] all right set it for you again fourth down the ball at the 21 and a half yard mark Butler is on for the field goal attempt the third attempt that is next backup quarterback to do the holding fake get next to the quarterback that pass is incomplete well I don't produce some interesting repercussions here it certainly fooled not one open Raider for the Raiders stay out in front 3 to nothing we'll be back after this message hi shaven clothes for your big close-up huh yep well don't cut yourself Sam I don't have to cut myself to shave clothes this is the track to the two bladed razor from Gillette the blades are recess so it's safer recessed then how come it's shave so close because when the first blade shaves your whisker it stretches it out from the skin and before it can snap all the way back the second leg can shave it again closer what if I went back again with my one blade razor whisker snaps back too fast gee that's a great shave and that's not even my good side the Gillette track two the two bladed razor Ron my sweat head Ron mine's the dry look Jeff Edmund wet head Jeff Edmund the dry look have you tried the dry look the aerosol hair control from Gillette it's turned a lot of heads so a fake field goal the temp by the Houston Oilers goes awry they trail the Oakland Raiders with 12 seconds remaining in the first quarter open the first and ten don't move from their own 21 yard line [Applause] all the way as the quarterback [Applause] [Music] knocked away number 78 Big Mike diliman in there along with Elvin Bhatia going back to that fake field goal attempt Frank bill Peterson you may not agree with that call I personally don't but you've got to give him credit for a lot of guts he's desperate to make good here he had a cynic your job at Rice University a long-term contract he was always a gambler at Florida State he played the pro style offense there and he knows that he risks immediate disfavor with these fans who still want a winner when he makes a call like that and it doesn't work and he's also we're in 12 years the Otters about six coaches second and 10 Charlie Smith actually yep in 12 years there have been eight who ripped his folly limb Sammy Baugh bone Stella Frank IV Wally limb again your friend the old giant ed use and now bill Peterson and I guess you could well it depends on how you treat lemon is to ten years the country with them as another Grover Cleveland serving two separate terms and count them twice what just count a month I'll leave it to so quickly Starion as dandy done to determine how I will count him twice well the bottom line is a little hazardous here third down and 10 the ball at the 21 yard line of the Oakland Raiders the set backs 23 Mr Hunt for sandy left but let me pop right flags go down the illegal procedure as very excited official one of the Oakland Raiders [Applause] if to justify our existence everybody has to be somewhere [Applause] it'll be marched off against Ellen the illegal procedure third down and 15 all resting just over the 19 yard line now well is the first quart is about to expire the rate has have hardly been impressive hardly they lead three to nothing as their lamonica but see any off to the left picked up there by Vinnie Johnson up to the right goes Biletnikoff the man he's been going to the big draw [Applause] we might have heard number 33 Vinnie Johnson bearing down [Applause] the lilica is a hard ball floor too we talked about master any earlier but one of the wraps has laid on him before that's the end of the first quarter the Raiders out in front on the 46 yard George Blanda field goal of three to nothing we'll be back after this message to get the writing comfort of a big luxury car like this one but in a smaller easy to handle size done it for you Mercury Montego Amex personal size car with the ride of a big car Mercury by we need you the National Center for voluntary action preceding announcement was brought to you as a public service on behalf of the National Football League Gerry departure to fund for Oakland the single safety or Houston is Ken Houston [Applause] mr. box the pot for the flag the line of scrimmage [Applause] brakes Samson was in to recover the fumble but let's wait and see calling again take a look at it several guys got in on that one 32 it looks to me Warren Walsh 32 Ward was [Applause] [Music] 91 picked it up safe so he could pick that thing up and gone in now could he break as a block punch and he could have yeah but he did is happy to have it the rookie from Stanford the others in great field position at the two yard line first and goal Pastorini is the ball or rather face the ball - Rogers it was to run himself he goes Phil villapiano's [Applause] in the corner with nobody with his laughs seven yards from it you're absolutely right but he's the youngster who likes to run with the ball as everybody knows in fact he reminds many of Bob water fill and it's bill Dennis style and everything he does including the fact that he's a fine punter as we've already discussed in an excellent placekicker look back at one of the heads of both zero all alone screaming for it oh hope Kenny wasn't going to get the ball away godo Peterson's not happy about that either gift okay I know how the receiver feels pastor Randy brings them up second down now that's the same formation opposite this time again with the fake draw stop number 34 of the old pro bono and he made the play on one side on first down it was Phil Villa piano number 41 who made the play against Pastorini but a vivid evidence on two consecutive plays of the problems of young quaterback suffering from inexperience in his whole career Andy Don Meredith was guilty of that so often an oval quarterback would have had a problem getting away gisado thank you Frank you're a nice vid Howard in burro goes out to the right master meaning we'll have to put the ball in the air whereas the white side of the field sorry join it is on the left side going for a joiner it'll be out of play Pastorini upset he did you saw have kimber Oh wide open in the end zone now they're going to have to settle for the field goal attempt and the fans registered that disapproval vocally [Applause] fourth down the ball at the 17 yard line skip Butler will be kicking from the 29 [Applause] and this is why the block guys dr. wrath against number 48 comes up with the football team I will sir [Applause] [Music] love there was it was a little over there's also pretty good breaking that line up there up in the middle so they didn't get a good blockbuster fun all right some weird happenings that the Oakland Raiders lead three to nothing we'll be back after this message where is the party of the first part having elected to column 11 words for tools you need more than a pens you need flare flare writes feeling layer writes ideas where rights Connie Blair writes music let rights emotion flower even writes pictures the man does not live by words alone words man needs flare in 12 very human colors no matter whose steel-belted radial commercial you see it will probably be a demonstration of superior handling characteristics they'll tell you how steel-belted radials make so great a difference you can actually feel how they hug the road on sharp turns and at high speeds so with everybody telling you similar things which brand you buy well only Uniroyal can tell you this worldwide we've been selling steel-belted radials 10 years longer than any other american tire company a few moments ago this field goal attempt I skipped Cutler was blocked coming up in the middle was big number 80 the Oakland Raiders left with the art Tom's the defensive tackle so Oakland Dix over first and ten they'll move from their five yard line they've gained 75 yards the orders of game 24 mΓ³nica quarterback political office to the right this is Marv Hubbard I've heard moving across the left side behind a good offensive line Jim Otto's the center double Oh number 64 George wheeler is the right guard Gene Upshaw the left guard 63 arch l78 is one tackle the left tackle and Bob Brown 76 perhaps many things so the best offensive tackle at least in terms of pass blocking there is a football certainly physically is the best qualified in all of football to hold off any defensive end the ball of the 12 goes again to Hubbard straight wet blocking up the middle most of the first down Leofric 73 Mike Tillman 78 to make the stop [Music] well 45 remains in the first half the Oakland Raiders have been moving the football but they too have been a bit lifeless whereas down Oakland [Applause] Oakland now with six first downs Houston with two big number 77 on the bench council Rudolph all right from the 16 yard line [Applause] letting both backs to the right looking over the middle the gesture hold onto it you guys know first best Charlie Smith Charlie Smith brother coming out of the backfield and again don Ron Pritchard back there with him that ball was just not throw very will either Frank they'll roll a little bit to the right instead Smith out of the backfield a quick attorney and I guess they're trying to flood zones coach Peterson mentioned that he felt that the secondary would get at work yeah Thoreau cases it's a double cover both outside receivers and he has done that a few times tonight with his hat back in his safety it looks like Darrell's trying to work the half backs in the middle he just missed missed him when he had him open spreaders stanza Bob Brown the right tackle on second down and 10 there you got it see honey gianni will be short of the first down caching about the 21 where emotional Houston other fans and I'd like us [Applause] Lamonica now three of ten this counterpart Pastorini has completed only one pass and that was a screen pass [Applause] harmonica is twice consecutively gone to the air deep in his own territory he's only three of ten as done says he's not been throwing well and yet when the Raiders have moved the football they've done it on the ground and done it with apparent ease judy is Darryl so he's faced second-guessing out in the Bay Area for his play selection and one has to get some second pause do it now right now third down less than the yard for the open Raiders they're at their own 26-yard line Charlie Smith gets the call against the first down up to the 30-yard line mic Tillerman there to make the stop big number 78 next week is drug abuse prevention Williams for information on how you can help in this vital national effort please write to drug abuse prevention week s Fox 1904 Rockville Maryland zip Doh 208 v 2 Charlie Smith gets the first down the Raider is moving from their own 30 a little over remaining in the first half the Raiders out in front 3 to nothing they step again other Biletnikoff Fred Biletnikoff and hit by Willie Alexander [Applause] well he continues to throw and right now it's working for little one coverage on this side you saw he did sin Smith out the backfield which brought Webster the linebacker out with it he curled his back in you see Biletnikoff 25 will come out he's gonna run just to turn into a curl and hopefully right in front of him as he guesses the ball you'll see that Webster number naughty linebacker been brought out of his position by Smith you know the backfield first and ten from the 44 Mark barber gets the call Clarence Davis has checked in has one setback with branches in as a wide receiver Davis 28 branch 21 gain of about four yards you realize Frank that the Raiders are carrying six running backs that's a lot of running backs that's a lot of years roll it is unusual the guy's known their logic for a long time and he likes to throw the bomb and he has one of the great speedsters the top of your screen flip grants right now he has the second down and seven davus Davis over the 52 the 48 yard line of the Houston Oilers by Pritchard this is a potential breakaway runner that open seems to thee an effective breakaway runner a guy with the speed and enough size to split through the line and outrun this secondary Don you notice those shoulder pads on Davis we had a fractured bone in his shoulder yeah seven weeks ago coaching staff says they feel they can spot blame no feelings really regular for continuous play third down and two the Raiders moving now from the Houston Oilers 48 yard line both backs to me out of the backfield Monica rush gets it up to Brad to God [Applause] for safety pick up that ball drop [Applause] the nose for the football somehow he's always that the Houston Oilers with good field position and will be back at the Astrodome after this message this is the Conway County Arkansas volunteer fire department organized by Metropolitan Life salesman David Brewer why didn't they just stick to providing life insurance because he thought the county also needed a fire department you like doing business with metropolitan people like Dave Brewer ad metropolitan we sell life insurance but our business is life well pastor how's the new car fine guys right penny saved is a penny earned a mr. beat wise men say keep something for a rainy day any day at 91 octane Golf Channel OLED is the kind of gasoline that's recommended in most new car manuals get it cost even less than our regular so if you've just got a new car try golf team the way things are going these days every penny counts golf pain low lead it costs less than our regular a few moments ago Lamonica firing the clip branch kenny Houston winds up with the football you see elder the player there put a good rush on narrow bridge has the ball is tackled pops up in the air is Howard bitching Kenny Houston has a nose for the football he knows where to go now first and 10 they move the Oakland Raiders 37 yard line mr. Rooney mastery names charlie Joyner out to the left of the slot [Applause] number 43 George Atkinson combination of two things I would imagine hopefully the approved ruddy game by Houston but it's we point out earlier the defensive front for the Oakland Raiders there you're the experts they're going to make some mistakes you see a gap not through like this one of two things either gets the superblock offensive line all right defense admit is just overpowered or slightly out of position Ponte made a mistake that last time I think they made a mistake and he ran all the way in almost picked up for first down talk about a yard short and you're looking at Kenny Houston and Kenny Houston his son football player how are alluded to the fact earlier that he holds two NFL records he has returned nine interceptions four touchdowns that broker Baddeley which barnes mark who did that last year they had seven only rich opportunist second down you saw it about a yard Willie Rodgers getting a pride he's got that first down in Danya talking about that young of John Madison al Davis's don't think that hasn't cause sparks out in Oakland and in the Bay Area putting it right on the line sitting on the benches number 74 Tom Keating one of the best modern-day defensive tackles one of the quickest you'd ever want to say of course he's a veteran now and the Oakland management says he's been beaten out of his job but his dissatisfaction has been openly expressed first and 10 the Oilers on the open Raiders 27 yard line [Applause] we're left Charlie join it to the right [Applause] heading back getting over the line of scrimmage inside the 25 to the 23 notice Sistrunk number 16 Hylton Raiders out in front as a result of a 46-yard field go by George Blanda oldest sister onk is a strong young man perhaps not quite so strong as Manny his cousin with the Washington Redskins he was a free agent and I said earlier when time permits will develop the story of how al Davis got him from Tommy Pro throw it's really funny I can hardly wait second down at the 24 yard line Jim Byrne is checked into one ride receiver bringing the plan [Applause] fantastic food he almost made a great move to play before penetrating deep into the backfield three had a man open that time to Frank couldn't get it over art comes look at those hands displaying what's happened by tonight he blocked that field goal our Tom's one of those youngsters in that defensive front floors once again help the Raiders they leave the Houston Oilers for free to nothing we'll be back at the Astrodome after this message last year in a blindfold test of ride the medium-priced Mercury Marquis beat out a $34,000 Mercedes limousine Mercury's ride is hard to improve on but this new 73 marque we think has done it to find out 50 professional chauffeurs compared the ride of our completely restyled 73 marque blindfolded to the 72 supervised by the nationwide consumer testing Institute a majority rated this new Mercury's ride superior to the 72 the 73 was a superior ride in the 72 I had a greater sense of civility in the 73 we refined Mercury's suspension system and now every big mercury has steel-belted radial tires standard I was very impressed it was really a difficult choice to be very frank both good cars but I do prefer the 73 73 Mercury Marquis the car that beat the car that beat the $34,000 limousine Mercury built better to ride better at the sign of the cat a lot of weird happenings tonight at the Astrodome this was one of them that took place a few minutes ago Dan Pastorini dropping back to pass watch number 80 mark Tom's a defensive tackle laying back it appears is it possibly to pick up a screen man and he gets the interception if you say and what's come on languishing in anonymity and the cover but everything but Batman first attend the Oakland Raiders moving 25-yard line this is Charlie Smith Wow and a lot of houston oilers there headed by Kenny Houston number 29 you mentioned Frank that ought toms is having a whale of a night he blocked that field goal attempt he intercepted that pass and it's a long time coming to that young man he was Hal Davis's first draft choice a few years back a lot of people have felt that it was a mistake but he started using John Madden started using Tom's a lot more last year and then his fault and Oates and Tom Keating the veterans fell by the wayside aw it's getting his chance and if tonight is any indication he's vindicating that draft chart he is our Tom sitting on the bench out of the field Daryle Lamonica is faced with a second and 12 yard situation from the 23 play fake I don't know but he did deflected and he really got a strong rush that time coming in there was big George Webster number 90 on the Blitz Lamonica now 5 of 13 [Music] you know a young rider disappears at a Midwestern town then lieutenant Frank Dane of the missing persons Bureau has only a few clues to follow but they lead him into some dangers have unexpected places that's in jigsaw one of the action drama series of the men there's the at 9:00 8 o'clock Central Time and of course right here on ABC 12 yards the ball up to 23 of the Oakland Raiders 6:45 remaining in the half they leave the Houston Oilers three to nothing letting boat backs to the right this one going out to Biletnikoff [Applause] Alexander of course I didn't do anything fairly clear the outstretched hands of George Webster see [Music] George Webster was the guy that hit Lamonica the play before that Webster's also the guy who was back about 15 or 20 yards deep we'll take another look at this wouldn't see if you can pick out the interference Cobb Thank You kid Alexander's coming in watch his left arm Belinda Goff made a play - beautifully - he said there were first and ten for the Raiders moving from their own 41 here because Marv Hubbard and he's met five Big Mike Sullivan number 78 offensive line of the Oilers diliman 78 home 79-73 both is 65 Webster 90 Prichard 58 85 is rice there are the linebackers Willie Alexander at one corner number 19 Danny Johnson the other corner 33 Charles 25 Houston 29 the safeties to the star gnashing thing to see telemon in there that's a young man who had a cancer malignancy a year ago with second down in five thrown 46 yard-line Hubbard he's the workhorse and piling over the 52 the 49 and he runs right over the top of that Holmes number 79 who does however managed to bring Hubbard down very close to the first [Music] and you have to wonder about the courage of a man like gentlemen in the wake of his medical history these guys are just not numbers and helmets and face masks tell them it's an extraordinary person there was a middle of the stomach is up in height as a tuber I don't really know that much about how I agree with yet for some time they didn't have any idea do something was wrong didn't know third-degree seriousness but while these guys are well he had two operations dandy and the second one by the way fortunately the tumor proved to be benign this is a young man with real ability who's just now coming back to himself physically because of that surgical is out of the big sky country Montana that's Mike Tillman the power diver referring to playing a fine game tonight this on first and ten Daryle Lamonica going deep he loves to go deep Biletnikoff is open and I believe it would have been number 19 Willie Alexander only did a good job on that a number six draft choice a year ago he's got potential I've been run by Willie Alexander done but he was called for interference time before more pushing let's see what happens this time Biletnikoff actually has about a he hit he ran over him again I don't know that they would call that says he was out of bounds but that's going for the ball going going on the ball that's going for the ball and you saw the time remaining in the half the Raiders out in front or Atlanta hitting it at first first quarter for 46 yards out is in the lead three to nothing becomes a Firebird on the draw there's a big opening Hubbard running hard down to the 40 the 41 yard line finally stopped by number 73 Leo Brooks 33 Vinnie Johnson [Applause] [Music] n-c-double-a college football continues Saturday on ABC with three telecasts majority of the nation will see Texas Oklahoma Wow we'll also be telecasting Arizona New Mexico and Citadel East Carolina regionally check your local listings for the time of the game in your area they're down a long yard for the Oakland Raiders well at the 41-yard the Houston Oilers [Applause] [Music] Don Highsmith flag is down as you say I still losing perhaps a yard rep too I think this'll be a procedure penalty motion penalty against Oakland and properly holding that's mark at that point [Applause] Ron Pritchard over there helping to stop Don Highsmith we've got less than five minutes of time remaining in the first half as Oakland continues to lead by an arrow 3 to nothing margin don't forget at halftime gift we've got coming up highlights is some of the tough games in the NFL of yesterday including the extraordinary conclusion of that st. Louis upset of Minnesota yeah I've got a question Don if you get a fact that comes off the bench he's been in there for one play do you give him the ball on 3rd and 2 the first time he's been in the game the numbers been keep them alive and he probably brought that play in right get to be more and more that way these days neither sance ends every play as you know gift I do I agree with you from their own 44 following the holding penalty Lamonica with the strongarm goes the Biletnikoff he sure to the first down by Willie Alexander there's a flag back where they marked this matter of fact to Frank he could have roughing the passer penalty back there he took the pretty good lick for the eye [Applause] I say the I was both all over those they are not even tears in that area anything up around the head and shoulders severely not even be that [Applause] dandy did you have feel fear when your recorder back yeah matter of fact a reporter was interrogating you about that today wasn't he he absolutely was let's look what this build is because I thought it was running as fast as when done it must be holding us close when you're back in that area I'd say what I've got to hit the head here's the bus keep it calm for Holden that's what you have some discussions back in that basin look if you got a hold and hold them good enough to keep him from hit me third down 31 yards to go this is when you like to have that flake are done Danny goes up to the left Biletnikoff is to the right they're the two deep receivers [Applause] fires the Biletnikoff to paint on the football short of the 15 well short of the first down [Music] they put a lot of pressure on Lamonica tonight here's the defensive line working at Oakland offensive line over pretty good because he's using that role in pocket he's still getting pressure everyone knows telemon's a major leaguer if he's healthy and we've talked about elven Buffet he's a super player that 65 great determination loves to hit as much as Willie Lanier of Kansas City does [Applause] Gerry deploy stir kicking to the Mon safety Kenny Houston number 29 there's some kind of football player kid he used to be [Applause] I mentioned that another fine defensive back for the Houston Oilers would be available tonight one more and yet we have not seen him I think Kenny shows me as much strength back there in the strong safety position as anyone since you came up gif inflated which is back at the turn of the century as I recall the poster is really rushed for somehow he got rid of that football they also put on a big act Frank but didn't get away with nobody hit he but watching just get this ball out of the crowd he's saying you know if they hit me while ago they got to hit me again i snap he took several steps I'll let you call that you say please put right there he pushes off it falls back there [Music] told you the marker got hit the eye he's there that looks like the mouth Dan they go out to disclose that area now look here Darrell down this way Carly broker to first and ten the Houston Oilers have 336 remaining in the half moving from the 20-yard line here comes Billy Rogers Willie Rogers met flat at the line of scrimmage [Applause] yeah it looks like a back molar that dandy or else the left cheek either back molar is the one right next to it Howard I can't see from here it's one of those fact two teeth obviously no he bi wash it out there are you build dentistry was your original choice for a professional career wasn't it done at SMU No [Music] second down a name for the Oilers they trail three to nothing wide receivers coming left burro the bottom of your screen Farini Oh [Music] pretty 80-mile Wilson almost up to now this young man is having one of those nights just terrible a statistic speak for themselves you have to feel sorry for him because he comes off such a big game against the Jets that of course is the basic problem with what our young quarterbacks isn't it gift the achievement of consistency I would say so but he was not all that good in the first half against the Jets he came back in the second half and was brilliant as a matter of fact the Houston Oilers in this season have not scored in the first quarter of play so far they haven't scripted the second quarter this one we're down a night their own 21 Pastorini again going back this time is big number 84 Tony Kline is there getting help from 80 to Horace Jones say is that Tom's Akita there again over 80 he came across big lunge is a crisscross move between the defensive is and tackles through that offensive blocking off a little bit watch it again you'll see Tom's the rainy comes this outside it's where the real pressure comes in he just leaped over had a good angle they were all in there after that they're all in that but to a quite right it was the old tackle endgame holds a quiz game gets them every time from his own end zone Dan Pastorini [Applause] Mashka son trips up at the 48-yard line getting down there quickly was number 15 al Johnson you know this Saturday ABC's Wide World of Sports brings you the national championship sprint car race from Terre Haute Indiana the world roller skating championships from West Germany this Saturday at 2:00 Eastern Time one central and 5:00 Pacific time in us here on ABC [Music] if we just saw Atkinson slip on that astroturf as we break down to the two-minute warning mark was that the first slip we've seen tonight there's been so much complaining about this I believe so but he did have a little help from Al Johnson so as Howard said there is the two-minute warning we'll be back at the Astrodome where the open radios leave the Houston Oilers with two minutes to play right after this man for years musicians have tried to recreate the sound of a live performance they improved the records invented stereo but nothing gave you the feeling of being there until now now there's just four channels own introducing series 44 from Panasonic there are the four channel systems but they don't separate sound into four distinct parts a discrete system like Panasonic's does now a musician can put just rhythm on one speaking French horns are so you feel right Panasonic systems play four channel tapes and records they also improve the sound of stereo tapes records in radio discrete four channel sound series 44 from Panasonic two minutes remaining in the first half and looking at those statistics surprising that the Raiders only have three points on the scoreboard and that's coming from a 46-yard field goal by George Blanda in the first quarter that's all it is they leave the Oilers three to nothing and here's a young man has had a lot of problems tonight Dan Pastorini he obviously is unhappy with it on consistency Frank is the thing any quarterback tries to tries to achieve and you're starting out and you come off with a good game to the last week they beat the Jets and maybe he didn't have a good statistically Gatesville game Oakland now with the football they move on Houston's 48 yard line Olympic top is right here comes Marv Hubbard Ron Krisher slows up Hubbard and he's dropped at the line of scrimmage by Mike Tillman number 78 it is really playing a game tonight Holmes Brooks Buffet the foot for the Houston Oilers and while they have not battled evenly statistically with the Raiders they still only trail by three 1:30 for the clock moving remains in the first half till Amanpour tackles individually and four assists while resting just at the 45-yard line of the Houston Oilers second down eight [Music] [Applause] now we're going to change the football football [Applause] it's not what it used to be it never was that's a brilliant statement I can't decode that one well think about it well it sounds like one of Billy Clyde buckets now [Applause] [Music] hello Monica obviously he's worked up [Applause] I guess that's it I don't think I can say is that maybe you're funny others that change the football I don't know he's going to come over talk to head coach John Madden they have just clicked the time off timeout on the scoreboard I guess Darrell went to stop the clock but he was really upset about something and I have the slightest idea over what son was in his eye so the Raiders now I have two timeouts the Oilers have three one minute and 18 seconds remaining in the half all at the 45 about seven or eight yards away from the toe of George Blanda for another possible field goal second down and eight [Applause] Brooks was in there Mike Tillman's had home they were all there [Applause] well maybe Houston can be happy with staying close thus far but they can't be happy with Pastorini tonight and they know they've got to draft some running backs in the next draft coming up start rebuilding that phase of that team while Oakland can't possibly be happy about the first half performance it's put on overall one would have to say this game has been rather dull dandy third down in 17 the ball at the 46 yard line of the Oakland Raiders wide receivers mΓ³nica Charlie Smith he overthrows back defending number 85 Lloyd Rice [Applause] so how to field goal range Jerry de pusi will come on to putt Raiders 44 seconds here's dariya deploy stir kick to the single safety Ken Houston [Applause] again a strong rush off the side of the foot right there and he loses yardies back to the 13 yard line [Applause] Houston comes on to the field Dan Pastorini it's going to be interesting to see what Pastorini will try and do with 33 seconds remaining I have a hunch she's been in by flies by his coach bill Peterson just be careful with it don't give it up [Music] young man from Santa Clara [Applause] sylvilla piano picks it off [Applause] all time out somebody indicated a time out nine seconds Johan the scoreboard understand right I don't either that's an M&M ponderable mistake going down the sideline completely open but no matter have all thrown into a crowd a crowd of white shirts at just an inexplicable time nine seconds left to go in the first half oddly reflective of professional football at its best level and ER lamonica obviously is going to throw the ball because he doesn't have time to run [Applause] guys [Applause] nineteen Willie Alexander [Applause] talk about a giveaway at seven points we can look back and see a lot of those things but living off just takes off he gets right behind Alexander so perfect we throw a ball by lamonica incidentally boy that's where bump-and-run hurts if you don't know how to add he's been in the end zone before gather himself get those feet together scored six that was a necessary touchdown for hope them to get there George Glenda with the conversion [Applause] so the Oakland Raiders with the gift from the Houston Oilers in effect move out the front 10 to nothing while games around the league yesterday and of course we'll be looking at those at halftime as is our custom they are giants with a victory cutting up a lot of points against the New Orleans Saints you don't mind if I say that hard I don't mind that at all gif I'm looking forward to next week well I like what I see here tonight next week we've got Green Bay a three and one against Detroit at three and one two of the teams in the black and blue division tied for the lead we're astonishing things have been happening and I want to see for myself Brockington and McArthur Lane and Scott hunter and the rebirth of the pack and I want to see for myself the Detroit team that we watched yesterday pull out that victory over a very strong Atlanta team I'm with you Howard Holloway yeah yeah yeah so let's get yours liven it up oh come on [Applause] we have seen just about everything that gun has sounded don't like the call okay I'm leaving the field that's the end of the first half and as you see the Oakland Raiders with that bonus touchdowns touching their lead to 10 to nothing open Raiders 10 the Houston Oilers nothing and again highlights of yesterday's game coming up in just a moment back in 63 a team of specially equipped Mercury Comet said durability records that have yet to be equalled 100,000 miles at 100 miles an hour at Daytona today we build a new kind of Mercury Comet smaller by almost a foot priced right down with the little imports but we still build comet to be tough tough enough to take the punishment of a rugged test track built from the same gauge high-quality steel as our biggest Mercury's well into a solid unibody suit reinforced with sturdy steel B Mercury Comet it's one tough little car with a family tradition for durability that goes back to 100,000 miles 1973 Mercury Comet built better to last longer and the sign of the cat don rickles guest stars with Julie Andrews Wednesday night we're back live at the Houston Astrodome halftime score as you can see the Oakland Raiders 10 the Houston Oilers nothing the action was sparse throughout the first half the game was lacquered Lee played this is the way the scoring such as it was wait Oakland got a field goal 46 yarder from the ageless one George Blanda in the first quarter that was the only scoring indeed that was the only scoring until there were put four seconds remaining in the half because with nine seconds remaining inexplicably Dan Pastorini si to pass from deep in his own territory which was promptly picked off by Phil Villa piano the second-year linebacker from Bowling Green who did so well as a rookie and that set up the quick lamonica to Biletnikoff 16 yard touchdown pass Oakland 10 Houston up now to our weekly halftime highlights of yesterday's games prepared in conjunction with NFL Films right to it balloons go up in the air the atmosphere is festive at Atlanta Stadium this is first-half action only minutes remaining the handoff to LT Taylor of the Lions number 42 the Lions leading 6 to 3 at this point and algae running wide right as you saw and then coming frigidly mix-up 32 yards this is the very next play two minutes thirty seconds left in the first half the score as I said six to three and Steve Owens number 36 former Heisman Trophy winner from Oklahoma who's out wide and goes in for the tally Detroit leaves 13 to 3 now we're only in the third point and they're struggling Atlanta is to fight back Bob berry has just handed off to art Malone has become an outstanding running back to the National Football Conference he moves in for the touchdown that's 13 to 10 now after that kickoff this is the first play after the Atlantic kickoff and Greg Landry drops back and throws the juicee to run Jesse number 89 Jesse moves all the way - yagh play touchdown detroit 20 atlanta 10 now we're in the second play of the fourth quarter that's Bob berry the Atlanta quarterback throwing Joe and good this time it's twenty three twenty Atlanta with only 250 two left in the game quickly Gregg Landry strikes back downfield to us back out detail number 42 again Taylor and Steve Owens have combined to give Detroit one of the best one-two running punches in the National Football League we now have just 47 seconds left in the game Landry attempts to hit Ron Jesse again number 89 as it's incomplete the plant goes down an interference penalty call and so Detroit has the ball on the Atlanta three yard line now we have just 39 seconds left again the hand up to number 36 debones this time he goes around the right side sheds the tack let's let you see he's in for the touchdown no man the extra point was blocked the lion beat the Falcons 2623 lambo state the chicago bears going against early in the fourth quarter a pack is leading 17 to 10 Bobbie Douglas a South Park quarterback from sensations we are running back not a quarterback throws a 46 yard pass in affected George farmer as he storms down field after the reception Chicago Bears can fool you even though they're still winless this is for plays later it's fourth and two from the two and like watch Bobby Douglas scrambling in and suddenly the Chicago Bears have tied the pack at 17 and 17 this backer team as I said is a different team this year we've now got 34 seconds left in the game and this is their new place kicker Marco the youngster from the Hillsdale and it's good and the pack beats the Bears 20 to 17 and next week the pack at 3 and 1 against the Detroit Lions at 3 and 1 on Monday Night Football well somebody caused the Minnesota Vikings to be Snakepit we've done a minute 43 seconds left in the game the Vikings ahead of the Cardinals 17 to 12 and that's Gary Kwas oh the form of viking quarterback hitting the rookie from oregon bobby moore touchdown the st. Louis Cardinals lead 19 to 17 now we've got four seconds as you can see left in the game Minnesota is setting up for a field Fred Cox it's a chippy shot 26 yards out but look he misses the ball hits the upright and so it's 19 that's 17 st. Louis let's look at it again in slow motion the snap they approach by Freddie Cox the boot now watch closely defensive back Roger Whaley apparently climbing up his teammate Rose back apparently touches the football and indeed the trajectory of the ball seems to have changed in flight a ball hits the goal post an astonishingly how's purple people eaters have lost three of their first four games of the season [Applause] when you save your money had a savings and loan you mine does more than just [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] if you find yourself scrambling around as much as Fran Tarkenton you really ought to know about the shirt is wearing the knitted sports shirt from how it gives a man total freedom of movement supplement fabric stretches as you stretch moves as you move doesn't bind stay smooth and even if it gets roughed up a little you still wind up looking pretty terrific the sport knit from how if it takes Fran Tarkenton scrambling it'll take yours Jay Stadium New York City key game American football conference still unbeaten Miami against the presumably challenging Jets this is action in the second quarter the Jets leading 7 and nothing Bob Griese dropping back hitting Howard twilly number 81 who's quickly the score is tied at 77 we moved action later in the second quarter once again greasiest watched his team down feel now the handoff to number 21 Jimmy kick he's in six yards in the touchdown Miami 14 the Jets seven let's go to the third quarter Miami's now leading 17 to 7 Joe Willie Namath trying to rally his forces back in the pocket throwing deep downfield to the number one draft choice for Jackson State cherry boy wearing number 83 the number the George Sawa Jr used to wear no know Miami did not get it the pass completed a 52 yard game that led to a Bobby how field field goal 17 to 7 17 to 10 rather now we moved to the very end of the game early in the fourth quarter Emerson boots is forced to make it 24 17 late field-goal that's it this is norm Sneed apparently reborn after years of bed is of hope but no success at Yankee Stadium against the helpless New Holland Saints we're midway in the first place and that's need dropping back what a fasten the senate's he's got this yet touchdown pass to the back from Southern California Charlie Evans 7 to nothing Giants well late in the first quarter it's 10 to nothing Giants the handoff to Charlie Eppes number 31 who scored three times this day he's in for the touchdown piling it up 17 to nothing Giants open New Orleans now well late in the second quarter it's 24 to nothing at this point I told you about Charlie Evans here he is again 8 yards in touchdown the Giants leading 31 to nothing they haven't had a day like this in years with just three plays later 15 seconds left in the half Hachi men out of Ole Miss number eight scrambling the way he used to income looking deep downfield throwing to number 83 Dave his receiver in the National Don Herman the youngster from Waynesburg and so the Giants all right hey 38% scan excitement here we are late from the third quarter or at least moving to it and they're finally playing Bob grim acquired from the Vikings in the talking Tancredo Sneed - Bob Brent hits him touched it 45% well not a good day for the New Orleans Saints to put it in the form of understatement here you see Manny dropping back Manning finally hitting Danny Abramowitz and so no aliens scores that made a 4514 a wound up 25 21 no contest [Music] that was yesterday and this is tonight the Oakland Raiders leading the Houston Oilers attend to nothing ABC's NFL Monday Night Football the Open Raiders vs. the Houston Oilers is being brought to you by mercury cars that are built better to ride better mercury at the sign of the cat and by Sears tire and auto centerin where you'll find diehard batteries and a complete line of quality tires and will be ready for the second half kickoff between the Raiders and the Oilers after this word from our local stations as you can say I'm with a quarterback who's had many nights in his career much like the terrible one that Dan Pastorini is suffering tonight remind us of some of them Don here drew all you gonna ask for the second half has helped get a lot of help he didn't have a good first half he wasn't really a good ball game Darrell didn't throw that well either I think both teams have got to establish something consistent Howard and I you know what that's something is it can be you know anything would be an improvement with the running game I don't think they utilize their total outfits that much what puzzles me though done and you remember our lengthy talk with Bill Peterson last night a man for whom we have to have a great deal of respect a truly fine coach I think he calls all the plays for a Pastorini barring a few audibles at last inexplicable pass could not have been inaudible didn't seem to be and I can't understand bill Peterson calling the play well we don't know that he did however but did you say you know more than likely did I don't understand either he didn't have a 33 seconds I think I own the clock to do anything with and it's the kind of situation where you'd expect less run a thing out there known as the second half ballclub we're going in at half time only three points down which is a pretty good situation and they really gave the thing away and he came back the next time and the other ten bullets and ten points there's a lot of lot a lot different than three a lot points a lot a lot of points against a team as good as Oakland I think we ought to take another look perhaps at that last touchdown there's a let's do all right there it goes well in the coverage just getting right behind Alexander but just by step and it was a perfectly thrown ball as we mentioned earlier but it's right in the corner that's put them tenant and nothing into nothing is the score as we go back to the gyfer for the resumption of action the start of the second half I would like to point out too that the Houston Oilers trailed to New York Jeff's 14 to nothing at halftime only a week ago Annapolis when Dan Pastorini showed the type of football player he really is and we know he is and I think every football expert will tell you but you're looking at the statistics overwhelmingly in favor of Oakland they lead again Tim to nothing and the total yards 171 to 27 that's quite a story in itself setting it up to get the second half underway is dairy decoy stir you'll be kicking on 227 that's quite a story in itself setting it up to get the second half underway is dairy decoy stir you'll be kicking deep to number 21 Lindsey Cole then zico on your right number 34 bully Rogers on your left Houston down 10 nothing with an end over end kick everything tonight just enough saw something else says Kol and Willie Rogers alfon guests on act down there at the goal line and I'll break they were trying desperately to touch that ball and had one of them touched it they were actually in bounds it would have wound up being a safety that was their most unusual safeties I think I've ever seen all right here we go Dan Pastorini back in at quarterback Willie Rodgers boiled rajma the setbacks Kimbrough double zero one flanker Charlie Turner 18 out of the top of your screen the other flanker Alvin Reed is 89 he's the tight end first and 10 for the Oilers moving from their 20 Willie Rogers Rogers with the gain of about four yards [Music] they'll thereby number eighty art Tom's and Otis Sistrunk on the defensive tackles for the open Raiders Sistrunk 60 Tom's 80 flying 84 left and Horace Jones 82 the right hand the linebackers in the middle number 86 Gerald irons Phil Villa piano number 41 [Applause] on the outside yes I don't 34 the other second downfall of sex the ball at the 24-yard line of the Houston Oilers looking for the screen a flag goes down the flag is down at the line of scrimmage it's hard to guess what it would be frank we probably shouldn't but that screen was a little slow and setting up you saw mastery fake to his left and spent back and it could have been that the offensive lineman had moved down past that line of scrimmage I don't know what the referees these referees are having fun tonight something has just happened fellas that I think we should tell the viewers about even though they won't be able to see the young man the penalty there's no foul as you see now getting back to what I was saying a young man was just wheeled into a booth a big young man pehle six feet four inches tall it was a quarter back for Kansas State and the number two draft choice two years ago for me Houston Oilers fella named Lynn Dickey dislocated a hip underwent surgery they had to cut away a lot of muscle to repair he'll not play again this year his whole football future is doubtful at the very start of tonight's proceedings it was Dan Pastorini who was willing Glen Dickey out along the sidewalk when is a great kid and a great competitor and the hope here in the astrodome and hope everywhere is that he'll be back to play again [Applause] there is the personal foul indicated against the Houston Oilers and again a long discussion preceding that that makes me zero for 12 I was informed for the booth of my I'm like what saying about penalties anymore Alvin Reid apparently if someone a poppy should not have the tight end for the Houston Oilers all the others back from the 13 yard line here comes Willis Rogers battling up to about the 18 rather Hoyle branch a coil branch a coming back out to the 19 yard line and offensive line for the Houston Oilers Calvin hunt is the center 51 Ron Sol 64 Tom WREG News 60 the guards livered car 63 the right tackle Tom punches the left tackle number 66 down at 11 ball at the 19 of the Oilers just underway in the second half the Oilers trailing the Raiders chenda nothing go back circling out of the backfield and is Willie Brown 24 the all-pro safety was right there thank you pretty well call it Frank blow it hard for us the speedster that came from New Orleans the Houston is done a good job this year for Houston some of the preseason games and earlier games that one was a little bit low and again faster ad is not throwing the ball as well as it can all right now strain now back to one to number 21 clip France 43 is Atkinson [Applause] Houston football on the 38 yard line of Oakland I believe a final mistake [Applause] and others around him [Applause] of course I've consumed the bedroom I just decided I can handle it that balls still holding now Johnson finally sits on it 4:15 Houston has the ball the 37 yard line the Oakland Raiders and they trail attendant state [Music] further to the left number 18 is joiner Willie Rodgers and he's picked up immediately [Music] 484 Tony Klein was there 82 are stones this team simply can't muster any ground attack at all which is of course an overwhelming problem for them even if Pastorini were throwing well you couldn't pass forever looking there it Al Jarreau Johnson the grace blossom into a poll done in the running department a they don't have good running backs B they don't have a good offensive line second and 12 from the 38 yard line pastor Rainey back draws a crowd [Applause] quite a shot [Applause] holding the Houston Oilers al Justin the fella drew curved that fumble on a goat he had a close up here on your screen number 54 Houston the University of Cincinnati as a quarterback Cincinnati coach Peterson was talking last night he says I think really he was recognized as the third best wishbone T quarterback or option quarterback in the country last year he placed him on the quarterback at Oklahoma mildred and phillips in texas and he said this guy don't be surprised if we don't try sometime this year we might put Justin is a wishbone quarterback and see what he can do good runner he gained over 1700 yards of Cincinnati now we have a second down in 27 past Iranian trouble draw the rush of these young Raiders line really pops Amen easy lets it go number 84 unloaded on master eating reading the box of levert car [Applause] [Music] man has been pumped around linebacker all throat linebackers Webster George Webster and we'll be back at the Astrodome where the Oakland Raiders leave the Houston Oilers 10 to nothing after this message Bob Griese doesn't wear give and taking it slashed from Sears when he works but he could there a comfortable idea in double-knit slacks because even the new band room waistband stretches so they really give and take with the action and they always look great because knit shake the wrinkles right off give and take knit slacks you won't want to wear them all the time but you could give and take knit slacks and all it goes with them at Sears to the men's store neither snow nor heat nor gloom of night stays the die hard from the Swift completion of its appointed start the Sears diehard with extra power to start your car the Houston Oilers one of 12 tonight's 17 yards that was a screen pass that happened about in the first quarter down in 27 34 yard line is [Applause] short of the first down that will bring on skip and he appears to have reinjure that ad right now the Oakland Raiders with 12 minutes and 49 seconds remaining in the game have that 20 to nothing late Andy Lindsay Cole on your right holy Rogers on your left they're a two-point stir to kickoff [Applause] [Music] this will be Lindsay Cole Down Goes Lindsey : trying to put this affair into some sort of perspective Frank it's obvious what the oil is need they need to develop the young quarterback who is not reflecting his real potential a night or anything like if they need running backs they need strength in the offensive line the Oakland Raiders have not played a good game but they've got outstanding personnel some believe perhaps the best 40 man squad in the game and what they need is a victory it's like Stram's team against aliens when Kansas City needed the victory at any cost because they went down at the moment mastery knee stays in to Robert Holmes moves over the 25 to the 27 but the Oakland Raiders will on the ground the only way they can he had heard his lie the pass and Dan Pastorini hasn't even threatened tonight he's too up 16 for 36 yards we're 81 azam replacing Charlie Joyner burro to the right first and ten Waller's 27 yard line Pastorini under close vamos comes up with a great catch you really could crank it up which I guess I've looked at for the quarterback's day but I think he could have had it let's take a look at it it was a little bit low but a night like tonight should have been nice need to pick that thing up because as you said he had a look at stranded guys got he sure can run with it when he catches it the ball was a little bit low but he could have picked that thing up in a footrace second out of ten 27 the others with no points on the scoreboard trailing 22 they like this play I'll villa piano you can fool him a couple times but more than twice good heady ballplayer second-year man out of Bowling Green we saw him on Monday night a year ago yes Cleveland when he had a great night he is a good head a linebacker and he's got the kind of quick action that is perhaps the best index of what Detroit throws at you with that trio of nuuma number 50 Lucci 53 and Wayne Wacha 55 and you'll be seeing those guys next Monday night as the Lions go against the Green Bay Packers in a fight for first place Central Division NFC third down and 15 and having his problems going deep there [Applause] I could see and hear they didn't tip it Hitler again what think pastor he can't do he can throw it a long way oh hey just one hand of that number 48 is Amaya Wilson say I'm sorry [Applause] it hurts what hits you in the shoulder yeah so Dan Pastorini has been punting well tonight didn't hurt me we'll have another opportunity to fund fourth and 15 [Applause] [Music] [Applause] that's really the story this game faster eighty-three of 1931 yards hometown grad seems to read that story [Applause] out of this Astrodome ahead Paris County Master Annie doing the pudding cliff ranch nothing back there number forty-three Georgia Atkinson now the single safety [Music] branch 9 3 spreader from Colorado [Applause] I should not have said it I am short this pastor Rainey's pun [Applause] [Music] [Applause] opens 45 yard line [Music] so that's the story at this moment at the Astrodome the Raiders 20 the Oilers nothing 10:30 remaining in the game we'll be back after this message [Music] Gillette makes a better double edge now than a one your father used the smoothest edge we can put on a blade for the smoothest shave we can put on your face the Platinum Plus blade and some day Gillette will make even a better blame for your son the more things change the more they stay the same we made the first blade and we're still the first blade Gillette Platinum Plus I wouldn't use an antiperspirant if I didn't have to but I have to I perspire it's just a lot of antiperspirant smell artificial but not this new one it's new right guard natural scent antiperspirant smells light clean like after a shower and it helps keep me dry all day new right guard natural scent antiperspirant I like the way it works I like the way it smells this is the rookie coach bill Peterson and he's upset ball club has not had a good night you can understand it especially after the hope provoked by last week's upset victory open now with the football and there's a start 232 273 Oakland doing nothing dramatic but still moving the football run-up 20 points we talked about the clay as Houston needs Frank to fill that team for the future the positions and all of that something else they need because and this bears upon what we touched on early in the first half continuity of leadership eight coaches in 12 years it's impossible to have that if bill Peterson gets his shot over a span of years and I think you'll see results he saw Marv Hubbard coming to the sidelines he was shaken up after he carried that ball that looked like he was a little mad at linebacker Floyd Rice he picked up five yards a second down now and five and here comes lawrence Davis [Applause] at homes in on the stop bad night they're not a good night then he goes back to a time when he could not make this Raider team that was back in 1968 that's when gif and I went up to Hartford to watch him play for the Hartford Charter oaks and gif as five deep greatness of the youngster and called Al Davis and said get him back did I do that well anyway he led the league at Hartford elana Coast Conference came back and has made it big with Oakland Davis picks up the first down his first intent Oakland at the 44 of Houston [Applause] teleMed makes the stop on number forty feet banners act this is the turn of the ballgame at Oakland's go to the obviously running the ball there's no need for them really put it the airlift puts it back there's also real test to young Houston defensive team these guys have got to be tired the other look at the scoreboard their offense has not been productive tonight you could see the team fall apart hopefully they walk because she ain't see any team do that second down and five the valta 39 of the Houston Oilers sandy left Biletnikoff right and right there Lamonica wants to run it out the banners that gets the call picks up about two yards get Nick's watching from the sidelines communicating the scouts up in the box he's after was it looking at different up there it does down here no no all right it'll be third down along three the ball at the 36 and a half yard line their Lamonica puts Biletnikoff up to the right here face Alexander Sienna is up to the left to meet Betty Johnson [Applause] both back sledding right only attempt goes out to Biletnikoff a flag is down they've they caught it up Oh God they caught him with hold it that's not right - those go ahead miss another one but I think that's what it is Houston will probably take the penalty [Applause] local will probably throw a 40-yard touchdown Houston of course wanting to move Houston out of our Oakland out of field goal range remain third down that was the holding call Don you got it on out of 13 Thank You Chet [Applause] third down about 19 now the ball back at the 49 yard line of the open Raiders 7:40 on a clock Danny come right going deep tipped away intended forklift branch Kenny Houston a real football player in these Oilers was back there to make the deflection Zeke Moore number 22 also back helping interesting how he retains his individual excellence Kenny Houston in the face of a team performance that's been so dispiriting you know done yes that is amazing they've really been this party and he'll drop back to accept the amount of deploy sir in Houston not the AFC last year and interceptions here's the boy stur [Music] it's time can he use them with Carl for the fair catch at the 13 yard line 38-yard punch so the Houston Oilers in their offensive team back out to give it another try they trail 20 to nothing with 726 remaining in the game we'll be back after this message [Applause] [Music] the American worker today some people are saying that he just doesn't measure up that he can't build products with a kind of careful workmanship his father's generation did today some people say you have to go overseas to get quality like that well to that kind of thinking we politely answer [Music] every color TV Zenith makes is built right here in the United States by Americans like these as far as we're concerned our own people here at home have proven that you can do better than honest American craftsmanship measure up we think the American worker more than measures up its zenith people like leaves made it possible for us to say since 1927 at zenith the quality goes in before the name goes on back in the Astrodome the Oakland Raiders very much as though they're going to say one half game the pace of Kansas City in the AFC's Western Division racism tied with San Diego they leave the eastern August 22 19 7 26 remaining and this young man Dan Pastorini as a really difficult night [Applause] yes the throat trailing 22 nothing a flag goes down so I joined her can hang on to it even tip five jacket eight of number 31 flag down at the line of scrimmage [Applause] offsides Oakland [Applause] George Blanda started the scoring in the first quarter hitting from 46 yards out this is a play before a little on the kick we had before it a little battle working here between Alexander and Maxwell let's take a look at it 42 and you're left and 19 what's this right here he says what is it alexander's night Wow you know it we're looking awful hard for some action for you folks on first down five by number forty-three George just joined us Oakland leases contest when he's deaf as I started to say they have not been too exciting doing it been as a matter of fact kind of methodical and as you've mentioned it Frank as a fine interception Jaff Kitson coming all the way across picking it out of the hands of Alvin Reed harmonicas if for a pair of touchdowns one to Biletnikoff another to see an e lambda added another field goal five yards out first and ten Oakland they'll move from the Houston Aldus 30-yard line here comes where's Davis if the flag goes down Davis spinning away to the 20-yard line but a flag is down at the line of scrimmage back deal in motion against Oakland the beard as if uh Burt was the man who was out of the county what you're thinking about this contest Andy that sums it out no it's been unfortunate now because the owners were very excited about last week they obviously played good enough football to be the good football team with the New York Jets no they are not contending tea this year but there's certainly hopefully being representative and tonight it's really not a very representative night as you pointed out so I know they're very disappointed as you say again hopefully [Music] first and 58 Oakland houston's 35 yard line Pete manna Zach that exact [Applause] by Phil Coyle who has replaced number 59 s coil and he's replaced towards Webster and I believe there might have been a facemask all but this year is only a five-yard penalty unless is deliberate considered flagrant violation [Music] [Applause] and this one will be marked off 15 yards must've been flagrant yeah if they deem it to be purposeful that's it fifteen personal foul and coming up next Monday night to find football teams and why the race in that simple division how about Minnesota ought to understand gift sometimes I think Francis Dawkins in a snake pit he moved that team right back up the field after Klaus OHS touchdown pass to more position for the field goal and then as we shown at halftime that Roger were late Rick steeps better Zack on first down another flag goes down but it really has made quite a race out of that subdivision we'll be in Detroit next Monday night where Detroit and Green Bay I think the thing to remember especially when you're talking about that black and blue division Frank being one in three Minnesota is still an outstanding football team everybody in the country knows it and they're not out of that race yet there's a lot of time to go illegal procedure this time against Oakland I believe that's three straight penalties on three consecutive plays agree gif about Minnesota pretty definitely and of course the loss was to st. Louis out of their division of course we pick up Minnesota the week after the Green Bay Detroit game I'll say it again it's still first in 15 it's been that way for about four or five minutes now 639 remaining in the game where's Davis keeps his feet those inside the 25 to the 23 dick more wound up with the football bring back Ron Pritchard and on this stop this man has been really busy he really has nobody came out to getting that time so he had a kind of a free run of it little advocate kind of wind up before they hit those folks you see if those arms back where's Davis feeling the effects of that that he caught that forearm right across the forehead the linebackers always are we're kind of weird yeah well you got to watch a special breed there make them just right where they move fast and yet there's still big enough to carve you up picture now with eight individual tackles six assists I hear a lot about this young man [Applause] second down and 12 now for open tight end is Bob for number 88 Anna Zack is back in she always hit the other setback is that 4723 the Monica in trouble gets it away see any holes on to it [Applause] [Music] [Applause] pistons fall and who got it Willie Alexander I believe finally came up with the ball it'll be first in 10 the Oilers there's seven yard line this little kind of xxx pattern almost robbed division so houston oilers take over first intent on their own seven will be back at the Astrodome after this message we've proved in test after test how smooth our big Mercury Marquis can ride but how about our smaller mercury the personal size Montego MX Brohm Karen and Zack Taylor whose hobby as home movies will help the nationwide consumer testing Institute evaluate the montego's ride while Karen drives through scenic California horse country Zack will shoot with one movie camera an identical camera mounted on the axle will film the same scenes the wheel camera shows how rough the road really is while Zacks camera gives clear proof how smooth and steady montego ride montego's big car ride is built to Lincoln Mercury's high standards on an extra wide stance and the same type high stability suspension system as our most expensive luxury cars 73 Mercury Montego built better to ride better pictures don't line at the sign of the cat [Music] houston oilers down 22 nothing get the football back see auntie bumble willie alexander recovered and Pastorini going all the way on a very bad night for the Houston Oilers and Nestor any gets out over the 10 to the 12 and he's dropped their five big number 84 Tony Cline Clarence Davis 28 of Oakland who went out just a couple of seconds ago the report is was only days if there any need to use him again they could I don't know if we'll see him again under these circumstances and laying it right on the line and I think we've been pretty honest about it this has not been a good football game we think we've got two great games coming up over the next weekend Texas against Oklahoma in college football on Saturday Green Bay against Detroit next Monday next Iranian law say listen they went to scrimmage you see yes Lee so remember what happened after that I remember that Andy that was the problem at SMU no intention sisters didn't go to college an Al Davis did go to a scrimmage at the invitation of Thomas finish a little less story he happens to come from a very large family and lumbus George and he had to work and he had to take care of that family and then he finally went up to Norfolk and played up there in the continental League and he decided he went wanted to try out the big-time so he comes up with the interception Otis sister on from the 14-yard line here comes clarence davis and literally break tackles he'll scar [Applause] [Music] I don't know what the exit the need for another touchdown but John Madden the coach decided to use Davis again and that was the result coming off a broken bone in the shoulder laying his first game in seven weeks and he has a lot of spark to the Oakland attack the kick return man was second in the American Football Conference last year returning kickoffs Southern California has had a lot of great runners in its history that they have I think beginning with a fellow who won number 16 and is immediately to my left and you're looking at a number 16 knuckling it through for the conversion George Blanda number fourteen is warming up on the sidelines kit Nixon's gonna pull this one out of the fire you think he's excited about coming in don't you know his thrill 27 to nothing the Raiders over the Oilers and it'll keep that American Football Conference Western race alive Safari with some real good troops down to San Diego and of course Kansas City off on a 3-1 record thus far bill Peterson great college record with Florida State with one year rice turned down several professional offers wound up here in Houston and as Howard mentioned I think will probably turn out to be a very fine coach I know as five boys are watching around the nation Jerry the moisture set to kick on your left Willie Rogers there's a call on the ride and missile Rico the back of the end zone he'll stay there [Applause] all right will we see Kim Nix sir were we again see Pastorini four minutes and 28 seconds remaining in the game we are going to see get Nicks I wonder what you tow a quarterback Dom situation like this well we got a status being here like well one thing is establish the runs none mix them up call your own plays and have fun he's a new kidney coach all right Kevin exit quarterback six years he's a Texas Christian boy Charlie joiners offside Kent Knicks maybe justifiably so for a little actually seen bobbles the snap from center as our game for the evening or there's four interceptions isn't that amazing Raiders have lost four fumbles that equalizes that is that all the block kicks we had told me three couple of were blocked twice or 25 remaining in the game Raiders a good solid football team they are that tonight's now representative of their abilities they get a victory they need that time with San Diego now F game off the pace with Kansas City and with San Diego so quickly rebuilt and so wisely so by Holland swari we could have a great three-way race in the Western Division in the AFC number 74 in the defensive line is Tom Keating flag goes down Pass has completed the number 89 Alvin read that the flag is down downfield we have seen a few penalties tonight also [Music] holding against Oakland [Music] fifty-five Dan Connors 74 Tom Keating in the two great veterans who've been benched and play for the youngsters you've talked about as Johnny Madden who at 32 when he started coaching Oakland was of course the youngest coach in the National Football League and Johnny's record an Oakland sold record is about as good a record as you could want to find Frank because they've been in four championship games in the last five years and he has gradually changed the nature of this Dame he has a lot of youth mrs. Kenton expiring is picked off by number 48 Michael Wilson [Applause] vandermeyer [Applause] [Music] of course when a team deteriorates it can all the way we'll take another look at it not really important anymore in the evenings proceedings you're watching Kent Knicks looking out his projected receiver slepping leaving the field wide open for new Maia Wilson Brett Dawson was the intended receiver Kamiya cutting across field picking up downfield blocking and as you see staggering down and going out of bounds on the two yard line [Applause] let's tell it like it is all right all right let's go stabler at quarterback first to go for the two more plays his football Raymond Chester is hurt or on third and short yardage cybers a tonight [Applause] listen if you weren't with us at first year we saw a team play this battling the wound up in the Super Bowl the Dallas Cowboys when st. Louis really destroyed I remember that st. Louis will never forget it ray there's 33 lambda on the mega 34 boilers nothing [Applause] well we've got a big one coming up what better way to spend a Saturday afternoon than within CA a college football and most of you this coming Saturday will be seeing the annual classic between Texas and Oklahoma oh what a what enough and soak Lahoma has with little number 30 Greg throwing rated number one in the nation at the moment Brayton the use of the wishbone T Jack Mildred already just a memory number 12 with the Baltimore Colts Texas always so great under the Lake Como cards and why jerry DePorter we'll pick up the Raiders have extended their lead now 34 to nothing Willie Rodgers on your left Lindsey Cole on your right [Music] this is Lindsey : you are almost just stay in for those of you are just joining us we have three minutes 52 seconds left in this game it's hard to explain I can tell you that Oakland has not been dramatic they have been methodical Daryle Lamonica has thrown for two touchdown passes Guinea Sabre threw for a touchdown pass George Blanda hit for two field goals 40 1635 and there is their time remaining it mixes quarterbacking divisive Dan Pastorini and here comes Robert Holmes with the tank Holmes upended by Jack Tatum Holmes came to the Oilers and afraid to centrally Frasier to Kansas City in 323 yards here last year this is great years were 68 69 he had over 800 yards is 68 over 669 [Music] Jim Berne brings in the play from head coach Bill Peterson burns number 81 first and ten houston they moved now from their own 37 watch out kid horace towns males Kennex [Applause] and you had a very good chance to see Horace Jones almost unobstructed as he came directly in on the Blind Side of Kent Knicks yeah in Burma is a getting his shoulder pad on the left yeah they tried him read his knees he missed him there up around his shoulders he missed one there and Peniston between those two zeros second down now at 17 all of the 31 Nick's under throws to Robert Holmes right there is a vivid picture is a ssin of the excitement at Tata upon this key I guess we'll have some more shots in the crowd for you a little while folks [Applause] number one in the nation [Applause] right back here at half time okay kid let's get this thing going be a good Texas Christian boy third down and 17 Oh notices Toronto [Music] [Applause] boy Astrodome the 8th wonder of the world we've got two minutes and 18 seconds left and then we've only got seven days till we watch Green Bay against Detroit fellows on equality good how Scott hunter Greg Landry - this message [Applause]
I really wish if the Raiders had to move it would have been to Oakland NJ
The Oilers threw 4 completions and 5 interceptions, and finished the game with -1 net passing yards
The middle finger.
Pretty sure sbnation did a vid about a Pittsburgh-Miami game that was also a contender for worst MNF ever
in the 1972-73 the dolphins lose 2 games, the oilers won 2 games. They were so bad, Dan Pastorini throw more than 20 INT and less than 10 TD.
thankfully Houston never went back to that again
If you werenβt an oilers fan imagine that game was quite entertaining. Itβs turgid low scores with piss poor offence on both sides thatβs terrible
Raiders used to have an incredible MNF record, and then one day it was completely reversed
