the very beginning of ordinary time today let us recall our baptism because to be disciples of jesus is to live up to our baptismal promises and so before we celebrate baptism in this eucharist let's call to mind the wonder of god choosing us calling us and sending us forth to display his glory on this earth as jesus his beloved son did so let's rejoice over our baptism i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i've done and in what i failed to do through my fault to my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us please be seated a reading from the prophet isaiah about zion i will not be silent about jerusalem i will not grow weary until her integrity shines out like the dawn and her salvation flames like a torch the nations then will see your integrity all the kings your glory and you will be called by a new name one which the mouth of the lord will confer you are to be a crown of splendor in the hand of the lord a princely dyed them in the hand of your god no longer are you to be named forsaken nor your land abandon but you shall be called my delight and your land the weather for the lord takes delight in you and your land will have its wedding like a young man marrying a virgin so will the one who built you with you and as the bridegroom rejoices in his bride so will your god rejoice in you the word of the lord thanks be to god proclaim the wonders of the lord among all the peoples proclaim the wonders of the lord among all the peoples oh sing a new song to the lord sing to the lord all the earth o saying to the lord bless his name proclaim the wonders of the lord among all the peoples proclaim his help day by day tell among the nations his glory and his wonders among all the peoples the wonders of the lord among all the peoples give the lord you families of peoples give the lord glory and power give the lord the glory of his name proclaim the wonders of the lord among all the peoples worship the lord in his temple o earth tremble before him proclaim to the nations god is king will judge the peoples in fairness proclaim the wonders of the lord among all the peoples a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians there is a variety of gifts but always the same spirit there are all sorts of service to be done but always to the same lord working in all sorts of different ways in different people it is the same god who is working in all of them the particular way in which the spirit is given to each person is for a good purpose one may have the gift of preaching with wisdom given him by the spirit another may have the gift of preaching instruction given him by the same spirit and another the gift of faith given by the same spirit another again the gift of healing through this one spirit one the power of miracles another prophecy another the gift of recognizing spirits another the gift of tongues and another the gift to interpret them all these are the work of one and the same spirit who distributes different gifts to different people just as he chooses the word of the lord thanks be to god please [Music] your words are spirit lord and they are life you have the message of eternal life hallelujah the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to john glory to you o lord there was a wedding at kana in galilee the mother of jesus was there and jesus and his disciples had also been invited when they ran out of wine since the wine provided for the wedding was all finished the mother of jesus said to him they have no wine jesus said woman why turn to me my hour has not come yet his mother said to the servants do whatever he tells you there were six stone water jars standing there meant for the ablution that are customary among the jews each could hold 20 or 30 gallons jesus said to the servants fill the jars with water and fill them to the brim it drove some out now he told them and take it to the steward they did this the steward tested the water and it had turned into wine having no idea where it came from only the servants who had drawn the water knew the steward called the bridegroom and said people generally serve the best wine first and keep the cheaper salt till the guests have had plenty to drink but you have kept the best wine till now this was the first of the signs given by jesus it was given at kana in galilee he let his glory be seen and his disciples believed in him the gospel of the lord praise you lord jesus christ please be seated dear brothers and sisters who have shared the same baptism with me my fellow disciples of jesus when travels were easy before the time pandemic and couples traveling together going on the pilgrimage to the houdi land they would always look forward to a high light during the pilgrimage the renewal of their marriage vows at kana in galilee at that very place where jesus wants rejoiced blessed and saved a marriage by chasing water into wine so that the couple will feel assured that the lord and master is the game changer and the savior of their marriage and their life together today is the second sunday of the year we are well into ordinary time the longest block of time in the year with 34 weeks it is a time to get back to the basics to learn the ropes of becoming better disciples of the lord listening to him following him in our life sharing his call his election and mission to be sons and daughters well pleasing to god the father by the power of the holy spirit in other words the church wants all of us to look with rejoicing with delight the wonder of god's love in choosing us to be baptized and to share god's life as disciples of jesus this year our scriptural readings at masses are from cycle c and the course on discipleship is led by the gospel of saint luke already second sunday we would expect to begin reading from a sense look but no the church decides that we should spend another sunday looking at the first sign from the gospel of john the sign and wonder of our baptism god choosing and electing us to be his people his bride and so we have the story of the wedding at cana today the first reading from the prophet isaiah confirms that despite our unfaithfulness and our sin by which we should be forsaken god delights to marry to wed us and enter into a covenant a commitment with us as his beloved bride the reality is without god's intervention we are not capable of marriage or of becoming his people of jesus disciples for the wine we have is neither good nor sufficient but god still loves us he changes our water into an abundance of the finest wine this great mercy love of god in choosing us to marry us is the first sign that all of us should see in fact jesus does that when it was not convenient for as he said in the gospel his ah has not come convenient or not in good or bad times the lord will act to love choose and marry us and change water into wine even when it's late even when we have finished that stupid lousy little wine and are about to be embarrassed in this journey of listening to jesus because the critical point to be chosen by god to be his bride to have the best and the most abundant wine is to do what he tells us and in this journey of listening maybe the mother of jesus and our mother is important because mary the first disciple will repeat these words to us do whatever he tells you will we listen will we do what he says to go to the well draw water carry it to fill all the six stone jars each capable of holding 20 to 30 gallons and so totaling 120 to 180 gallons of water are we willing take the walk draw the water carry it back and fill all the jars to the brim if we are then we will see the great wonder of our water change into wine in our life let's go back to the couple you know on their holy land pilgrimage looking forward to their marriage renewal in canada people often think that jesus's changing of water into wine at kenner has only to do with marriage in a sense yes marriage was that vocation marriage was that symbol by which god says despite us he would choose to marry and make a loving covenant with us but you know the reading of the wedding of canada is never found among the lists of readings that could be used in the celebration of marriage it says no the first sign changing water into wine in saint john is a sign for all the people all of us call chosen send jesus all of us were baptized we are the ones elected blessed saved from the misery of embarrassment now to follow jesus and live out our marriage with god not easy if we do it together as a community as a people and saint paul in his first letter to corinthians reminds us of that he reminds us that all of us have received different gifts to respond to the variety of needs of the community in other words all of us have been called by the spirit and to serve with the distinctive gifts that each one in other words we're going to be different but if we know that it is god the spirit who is calling us and we are called to serve the whole community we will not depend on our water if we do what he tells us that all these differences among ourselves is from god and it is for the common good of all can you imagine on this time of the pandemic to serve the church each in our own gift you know different personalities of different opinions how important it is to realize that it is god the spirit who has given us different gifts different personality but for the common good to see that is to drink the water jesus has changed into the finest wine so brothers and sisters whether we are married or not we must see ourselves in the shoes of the couple at cana how god loves us and he will go out of his way to change water into wine but if we are worthy disciples we must do whatever he tells us let us profess our faith in the apostles creed i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord who was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of god the father almighty from there we will come to just the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting amen he let his glory be seen and his disciples believed in him nourished by the word of god and his teaching return to the lord for the needs of our church and the world as we respond lord hear our prayer lord hear our prayer may we be filled with joy in the presence of the lord knowing that our god who takes delight in us will not forsake us in times of trouble we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer the spirit distributes different gifts to different people may we be open to the gifts god gives eager to use them for the service of others we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer the water made into wine is a sign of god's extravagant love may we always acknowledge the abundance of god's love and show it forth in lives of the integrity we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that jesus's presence will bless the families of our parish as he blessed the marriage at canada we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer mary told the waiters to do what jesus told them may we be attentive to his teaching determined to follow his way and to witness to his glory we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer as we begin again ordinary time to be better disciples of the lord we hear we know that mary is with us to repeat what she said over 2000 years ago do whatever he tells you let's turn to mother mary and ask her to be a disciple and older sister disciple of ours as we ask him to interce her to intercede for us hail mary full of grace the lord is with thee blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb jesus holy mary mother of god pray for us sinners now and not be our death amen please be seated pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church grant us the lord we pray that we may participate worthily in these mysteries for whenever the memorial of this sacrifice is celebrated the work of our redemption is accomplished through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god to christ our lord for through his pasture mystery he accomplished the marvelous deed by which he has freed us from the yoke of sin and death summoning us to the glory of being now called a chosen rest a royal priesthood a holy nation a people for your own possession to proclaim everywhere your mighty works for you have callers out of darkness into your own wonderful light and so with angels and archangels with drones and dominions maybe all the hosts and powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as without and we acclaim holy holy holy lord god heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant we shall be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray the partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and john our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles saint simon desalet and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may marry typical age to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and never [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but delivered us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church will graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever peace amen the lord be with you always and with your spirit let's offer each other the sign
