again brothers and sisters today on the last day of christmas and the first day in ordinary time we celebrate the feast of the baptism of the lord christmas is a festivity of light for the invisible god has let us see him made visible in the infant savior at bethlehem and lying in a manger the newborn king found acknowledged as god king and man by wise men from the east today at the baptism of the lord his call and saving mission is disclosed and manifested for all to see today too all of us celebrate our own baptism for without god becoming man none of us could have been baptized and made sons and daughters of god through jesus death and resurrection and by the power of the spirit together with the lord let's recall our own baptism the promises we have made to live as sons and daughters and let us repent of our disloyalty of rebellion our unworthiness as children of god i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i've done and in what i failed to do through my fault to my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my self-restrained and live good and religious lives here in this present world while we are waiting in hope for the blessing which will come with the appearing of the glory of our great god and savior christ jesus he sacrificed himself for us in order to set us free from all wickedness and to purify a people so that it could be his very own and would have no ambition except to do good when the kindness and love of god our savior for mankind were revealed it was not because he was concerned with any righteous actions we might have done ourselves it was for no reason except his own compassion that he saved us by means of the cleansing water of rebirth and by renewing us with the holy spirit which he has so generously poured over us through jesus christ our savior he did this so that we might be justified by his grace to become heirs looking forward to inheriting eternal life the word of the lord thanks be to god let us stand hallelujah [Music] someone is coming said john someone greater than i he will baptize you with the holy spirit and with fire [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you o lord a feeling of expectancy had grown among the people who were beginning to think that john might be the christ so john declared before them all i baptize you with water but someone is coming someone who is more powerful than i am and i am not fit to undo the strap of his sandals he will baptize you with the holy spirit and fire now when all the people had been baptized and while jesus after his own baptism was at prayer heaven opened and the holy spirit descended on him in bodily shape like a dove and a voice came from heaven you are my son the beloved my favor rests on you the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ to complete christmas brothers and sisters we celebrate not just the birth of jesus at bethlehem lying in the manger not just the newborn infant king god and man visited and adored by the wise men but also his baptism and see another revelation of who is this newborn savior in his call and in his saving mission for us the coming of christ was prepared by john the baptist as prophesied in the first reading by isaiah he preached repentance and was baptizing the people at the river jordan his baptism was a sign of those who are baptized a sign that they admitted their sins that they wanted to repent and that they needed to be saved that's why the completely immersed into the water as a promise they will be washed and clean a promise that the old sinful person would be drown and would rise from the water to the promise of a rebirth but john's baptism was just a promise not the reality because the christ has not come yet so what does john say about who is christ and what does that voice from heaven declare that we may understand jesus's baptism his call his mission senuk tells us that there was an expectancy a feeling of expectancy of the people that john the baptist was the messiah the christ and so john declared that he was not by letting them know that he was only baptizing with water but the real baptism of the forgiveness of sins and rebirth will be done by someone to come someone who is more powerful than him and that he would baptize with the holy spirit and fire so john declares he is not the messiah and this is clearly seen not by the kind of baptism one is a promise the other the reality okay john does not claim to be christ do we claim to be christ do we claim to be more powerful or at least equally powerful with god even after our own baptism we continue to challenge god we act we play we even advise god how to be god john the baptist did not he says he's not even fit to undo his sandals the holy spirit is the actual agent the real worker of cleansing of new life to baptize with the holy spirit is to immerse a person totally as in water in purification and the cleansing of god and bring about a rebirth a new life filled with the divine power from on high poured out and given to the one baptized baptism of fire we all know that fire can radically destroy with no mercy but fire also purifies fire also divides and separates the truth from the false actually immediately after mentioning the baptism with fire with holy spirit and fire said luke explains what baptism of fire means when he says god's windowing fan is in his hand to clear the threshing floor to gather the wheat into his bun but the chaff he will burn in a fire that will never go out the process of getting good wheat grains is first to trash to beat up the grains to separate them from the stem to stop the husks and then to raise it to the wind to blow away the shaft the stem the husks that will be burned with a fire that never go out jesus himself says i have come to bring fire on earth and how i wish it were blazing already there is a baptism i must still receive and how great is my distress till it is over do you suppose that i'm here to bring peace on earth no i tell you but rather division for from now on a household of five five will be divided three against two two against three father divided against a son son against father mother against daughter daughter-in-law against mother-in-law baptism by fire separates the righteous from the unrighteous when the christ returns in glory as judge to be baptized is to make ourselves to move on to righteousness that same baptism will judge us lastly the testimony of the voice from heaven the voice of god the father which says this is my my son the beloved my favorite rests on him the father is doing as this has been called to be son chosen to be son sent to be son his mission was to be son once sent by the father conceived by the holy spirit died rose again and gave the very same power from on eye to make us also children of god he is to become the beloved son many of us often ask no what are we supposed to do after we have been baptized what is our mission our mission is this having been made given three birthday sons and daughters we are to become like the lord master and savior jesus beloved sons and daughters children who looked to the father who is there to please the father and we were there to do the will of the father so baptism of the lord today we recall our own baptism our confirmation our eucharist let us reflect on our call let's pay attention on the mission as we join jesus in his baptism to become beloved sons and daughters let's stand and profess the apostle creed i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord who was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary and the pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of god the father almighty from there he will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting amen you are my son the beloved favor rests on you on the celebration of the lord's baptism pandemic we also pray for the grace of perseverance as we all continue to be disciplined to help prevent many infections joseph and mary were deeply involved informing their child jesus that he would be a beloved son of god let's now turn to both joseph and mary and say the hail mary they too be interested for us that we who are baptized may also become beloved sons and daughters of god hail mary full of grace the lord is with thee blessed thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb jesus holy mary mother of god pray for our sinners now and happy our death please be seated pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church except for lord the all things we have brought to honor the revealing of your beloved son so that the oblation of your faithful may be transformed into the sacrifice of him who willed in his compassion to wash away the sins of the world who lives and reigns forever and ever amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for in the waters of the jordan you revealed with signs and wonders a new baptism so that through the voice that came down from heaven we may come to believe in your word dwelling among us and by the spirits descending in the likeness of a dove we might know that christ your servant has been anointed with the oil of gladness and sent to bring the good news to the poor and so with the powers of heaven we therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life in the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray the partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and john our bishop and all the clergy remember also brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god you bless joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles simon the zealot and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coerced through eternal life and may praise and glorify you to your son jesus christ through him and with him and
