[Music] well these pictures tell a thousand stories the faces of the men who are fighting the final battles of October [Music] [Applause] their whole lives they've been honing these skills hoping that someday sometime it would count in a big game cosplay [Applause] [Music] gets back to first wanna make your mark go ahead make it in the World Series [Applause] [Music] eight quarts one [Music] Minnesota has had its fun but now the whole scene changes the show Elena and tonight the ringmaster would like to make it the greatest show on earth [Music] [Applause] [Music] well outdoors tonight and it's nearly a full moon over this jewel of the south the capital of Georgia where the Atlanta Braves are the peach of everybody's eyes Atlanta is a city on a move 19 of the fortune 500 companies are headquartered right there but tonight whether you are a captain of industry or the captain of tour little league team giorgia on your mind it's baseball you're thinking about and this is where you want to be tonight [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] atlanta-fulton County Stadium and if you're anywhere near this place this is what you're going to see and here [Music] [Applause] and so excuse them if they seem a little carried away here but think about what the good folks down here have been through not only has no professional team ever won a championship in Atlanta the folks right after the all-star game all but the hardiest of bands had written esteem as yet another losing season this exuberance which has stirred the city has also sparked controversy among Native Americans across this country the Braves say they'll address that when this series is over in the meantime they've got another problem then again in this most improbable of seasons maybe they had Minnesota right where they want them at home and so tonight it's Game three the Minnesota Twins and the Atlanta Braves here on CBS and I again everybody on paddle Brian tommy lasorda be back with us tomorrow night welcome to Game three of the 88 World Series the Minnesota Twins are halfway to the four victories they need but bear in mind some of those historical precedents that make baseball such a wonderful sport to follow Minnesota has never won a World Series game on the road the 65 twins were swept in Los Angeles and the 87 twins were swept in st. Louis the Braves are by no means out of this one in fact since the Brooklyn Dodgers came back to beat the Yankees in 1980 1955 nine of the last 19 teams that have lost the first two games have bounced back to win it and so how big is this game here's what some of the players told me down on the field earlier tonight I think it's big for the brace you know I think it's a big game for both teams really bad I shouldn't say that you know we have two nothing and we're gonna be in their Park and they're gonna be Tommy Hawk and they're gonna be ready to play so we definitely have to be on our P's and Q's and come out and try to get directions and runs early and hopefully yeah hold on in there we need a some how'd you turn that momentum that they have also we need to get build our confidence back up don't losing two games it's tough yeah but I feel like if we get the win tonight we'll be sitting pretty good because then we have two more games here at home and I think that that'll give us a little boost well we've got two of the brightest young pitching stars in baseball on the mound tonight Scott Erickson of the twins and Steve Avery of the Braves now Avery arrived at the stadium earlier tonight he got out of his band there and walked up the door nerves or what he went to the wrong door folks at any rate say he has matured at the perfect moment as far as the Braves are concerned there's the door everyone is last five decisions of the regular season and then through nothing but blanks at the Pirates in the NLCS his opponent Scott Erickson is one of the two 20 game winners in the American League this year and because there is no designated hitter the National League parts Erickson of course will bat for the first time the first time since he was in high school out in Cupertino California and a while ago he almost hit one out of this ballpark and told me he'd like to in fact do that some other lineup changes the twins will miss the regular gh chili Davis he had 29 regular-season home runs and they blast in Game two but will not start here's that game to Homer Davis launched there's one [Applause] quite a moment up there in Scott Erickson's personal catcher jr. Ortiz will start in place of Brian Harper who is clearly a superior with this batch now without Davis and Harper Kent Hrbek will move into the third slot even with the left-hander Avery pitching the game meantime while Twins fans wait for their hard hitting outfielders to get their first base hit of this series the young son the unsung infielders have carried them to a two-game advantage and how often have we seen bit players become leading men in the World Series spotlight and the Shakespeare said some men have greatness thrust upon them in baseball or the dames roll off like a battery of bean counters tennis Doyle Hatcher and Hatcher after games one and two we can now add to that list such names as Knobloch Laius and gagged [Music] it's gotta go the pressure is on the big shooters you know the big guys to hit the home run to drive in the runs and that helps us to just go up there and just to be easy free music I wouldn't say it's luck it's just a matter of excelling you know at the right time at the right moment you know I get in that pitch and when you get that pitch hitting it or you have a chance to make a great plan making it I understand like when you look on it from the outside like I you should do you're like wow you know you're in the World Series watch on the field it's a it's a it's the game again you know I'm just trying to do that be friendly with Kent Hrbek did what he had to do in that controversial play at first base it everybody is still talking about Atlanta I can't how are you kerbecs expressed some interest though in becoming a wrestler and he showed off his moves to run as we always do we went right to an expert or some analysis of that play here's what our expert had to say you see what I saw connect this to the technique step over to him yeah I'm impressed through the macho man's eyes the tag was clean oh yeah yeah when we come back here what were you doing when you were 21 years old Steve Avery is pitching the biggest game of his life I spent the past couple of days with him we'll have that for you straight ahead as our coverage of the 1991 World Series rolls on from Hotlanta here on CBS stay with CBS Sports coverage of Game three of the 1991 World Series is brought to you by a Hyundai yes Hyundai makers in the excel scoop Sonata and the brand-new Elantra and by Domino's Pizza call right now and you'll be enjoying a hot delicious pizza for the game [Music] well a football fans tear down the goalposts and the zealous Braves fans toward the bat off a Henry Aaron statue look at that they patched it up temporarily today and had some welders out there and it looks to me that they did a pretty good job of it as we look at a a picture of the bat there did a nice job I think on that bad as Jim kaat joins us and we welcome him to the setup here we might wonder was that if not a bad luck omen at the very least a metaphor for the Braves lack of hitting in the first two games get it well you know the Braves hitters are getting beat up by because they haven't been getting big hits but let's take a look at some of the pitching these guys have had to face I mean we're talking about five of the best pitchers in baseball they've averaged 17 wins to start this year 17 wins this year seven innings to start in a low er a bear in mind there's about 250 pitchers that have started games in the big leagues this year all of these guys ranked in the top 17 that's impressive list of days what does that lanta have to do to get going well eventually in big games you have to get a clutch hit off good pitching so far Minnesota's been able to do it and Atlanta has not but you know what they might only need one run tonight guess who's pitching Steve Avery speaking of Avery kitty he's not the youngest pitcher ever to start a World Series game that distinction still belongs to bullet Joe Busch who stopped the New York Giants at another game 3 back in 1913 you're laughing do you play with him I played against a full ball hitter we digress though the story tonight is indeed Steve Avery and that's why we spent the past 48 hours with him Sunday night many the twins have won games one and two and now game 3 rests on the left arm of a youngster from Taylor Michigan who's already been compared to Hall of Famers such as Sandy Koufax Jim Palmer and future Cooperstown and try Nev Steve Carlton this guy's went 300 games and most of mine Hall of Fame and uh you know it's nice to hear all that but I've done it for one year those guys did it for a whole career and uh you know I still have a lot to prove to myself and everyone else I believe a couple years ago when you were 19 what did you think you'd be doing when you were 21 well I was in high school I thought in college right now but you know I thought I probably thought I'd still be into my lease just trying to get out there and things that move quicker and I believe believe I thought like every other kid in America Steve Avery had baseball high on his list of priorities and that's where it remains day before the game there he was in a World Series clubhouse you nervous nervous about tomorrow I really thought about it and I thought about it when you start thinking about couple hours as if he doesn't have enough on his mind putting the Braves back into the World Series Avery still has to buy tickets for family and friends miss David hey Doug how you doing any advice any advice for him yeah go a little harder hey Steve Avery [Music] these people are counting on you for a lot of things that putting pressure on you know no ad especially you know I'm more worried about what my teammates are counting on and we good do you feel like you have the weight of Atlanta on your shoulders I'm not China we all do you know they're expecting you know I'd be great at football game day 7:45 as Avery still sleeps the entire state of Georgia has this 21 year old on its mind Steve Avery's okay let me get Sophie wins I won't get no more than two - there's gonna be long innings for us but short for them these cracks am a pretty good Scouts there's some good old boys speaking of Scouts these teams been scouting one another for quite some time let's take a look at the blueprint of how Kevin Tapani tried to pitch David Justice game two on Sunday night the sequence of pitches started with a changeup blowing away another changeup you'll see they consistently keep the ball away from justice on the 2 2 pitch they tried one time to come in with a fastball pitch coming up right now pitched five and then the final pitch of the Advanta flyball the left field was a changeup again outside that's the way your blueprint the pitch the actual at-bat with two on two-out Sunday night here's the first one a changeup knee-high outside corner now on the second pitch watch David justices front shoulder and his front foot they pull away from the plate off the ball what does Minnesota try to do keep the ball away from them it's happening with another change of that misses now they continue to stay out there with one more change up on the third pitch that's wide for a ball here to me is the key pitch in the at-bat watch the break of the pitch and the swing down and away swings over it - - changes strategy fastball inside misses full count another changeup away not in a perfect spot but far enough away justice can't get the fan of the bat on it harmless fly ball the left Tapani and harper escaped the jam that was good justice is 1 for 8 with men in scoring positions in the postseason Thank You Katie Steve during the game the protests that continue here at Atlanta and across the country regarding the chopping the chanting and the war paint that have become such a big part of the whole Atlanta Braves scene you will see during the game that these protests have done little if anything to put a stop to this but what the American Indian Movement has done is to raise consciousness and put this issue on the agenda of the Braves and Major League Baseball both of whom have pledged to give this matter a hard look after the World Series back home [Music] you can feel the excitement through your screen and I got to tell you we are excited to bring you Game three and the two gentlemen who will call the game for you are Jack buck and Tim McCarver good evening gentlemen good evening Pat O'Brien folks everybody's in for a treat this evening with these two young pitchers going it certainly will be in encounter Jackie know-how and Christmas morning everybody is so overjoyed to see the kids unwrapping the Christmas packages while tonight two kids are the packages they're gonna thrill the folks and that are here at the stadium and those tune in you know when you talk to Tom Kelly he said it seems like only one pitcher is pitching tonight Steve Avery for as Scott Erickson has won more games this year better er a fewer home runs more complete games more shutouts and Erikson is the elder statesman I mean Erikson 23 years old Steve Avery 21 years old and together these two combined the youngest starters second youngest starters in World Series history the only pair that started a World Series game was Fernando Valenzuela against Dave Righetti back in 1981 and I think the interesting thing is to to know how different these pitchers are Erickson gets hitters out primarily with the sinker and Steve Avery primarily with the high fastball so maybe this is like Christmas morning here and we'll return to Atlanta Fulton County Stadium after this message and a word from your local station a great mall burns here at Atlanta's Fulton County Stadium a couple of their most outstanding moments took place during the past years one in 1966 when the Braves first came to Atlanta after playing in Milwaukee Bobby breagan led his ballclub back from spring training and here is another big big moment here in Atlanta the first World Series game ever in this ballpark let's tune in the Braves public address announcer Marshall man Minnesota Twins first here are the coaches trainers and starters for the plan [Applause] and now the manager of the Minnesota Twins Tom Kelly [Applause] leading off playing The Beatles number 30 Tuesday in class [Applause] [Applause] batting second playing second base number 11 Chuck Knoblauch [Applause] batting third at first pages 14 [Applause] [Applause] for Kirby Pucket [Applause] playing right field number 24 [Applause] that m6 that third phase number 31 scott leius [Applause] the shortstop batting seventh number seven brand [Applause] the catcher number zero to 14 and the pitcher batting 9th warming up in the bullpen number 19 Scott Erickson [Applause] now let's be [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and the starting lineup for the brain 27 1 that excited at third base for nine Terry feels that a third of the body play right field number 23 batting fifth playing first place for 12 Sid Bream number ten seven playing second base number 20 mark whiskey [Applause] [Music] number two Raphael [Applause] the pitcher warming up in the bullpen ladies and gentlemen please rise for the of the colors by the Georgia Air National Guard spending and so on America join in the singing of our national anthem which will be places in tonight by Susan slaughter first trumpet in the st. Louis Symphony [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Corrales terrific with Susan slaughter on the trumpet and this crowd 53,000 or more joining in on the singing of our national anthem we are just moments away from the first pitch of Game three of the 91 series [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Braves take the field and they this evening they've lost the first two games of this series five to two and three to two up in Minnesota will play the next two games here for sure and maybe the fifth game will be played here and that they offer traveled as scheduled and this area will wide let's go homerun King of baseball Henry Aaron bounced the ceremonial first pitch up to home plate these two was there in one hop I think that's pretty good he and his moment here when he broke Babe Ruth's record there's the starting pitcher Steve Avery and here we go for the twin with that left Chuck Knoblauch at second and Hrbek flame first 30 puckett in center Shane back and right and it is led scott leius and gangee and Ortiz and Scott Erickson [Applause] see they bring with a hi fastball that's his best pitch his second best pitch is a circle change and his third best pitch is his curveball only 21 years old defensively for the graves when Otis Nixon failed a drug test on September 6 need Lonnie Smith pressed into service in left field Ron Gant will be the starting center fielder David Justice in right field Terry Pendleton some people's MVP will start at 3rd Rafael Belliard will be the shortstop mark Lemke at second base Sid Bream will be the first baseman and Greg Olsen behind the plate [Applause] and of course the big question is can Avery do it again in 118 games during irregular then he beat the Pirates and Zayn wander nothing six again one of [Applause] in order for the Braves to be in any sort of a comfortable position he's going to have to be Reese win these twins can what - 91 during the year against left-handers that led the major leagues to 91 average all for six in the World Series elevated Givi followed by Knobloch and then her back what do you see in those eyes as the first pitch as the flashbulbs pop here are the umpires with Drew Colville at the plate Terry Tator Rick Reed at Montague Don denkinger and Harry wendelstedt one ball Glenn hits it into right center and grants on the move as the ball gets between up that ball should have been caught and gladdens going to end up at third base they hold him there that's the way the game started the other [Music] first inning Game two and Dan gladden has been the recipient both times Sunday night's game justice and mark Lemke collide and the ball was dropped and now justice and Ron Gant come close to colliding somebody's got to take charge once again you know David Justice the ball is coming back to him he should take charge in that situation the ball is going away from Gant and it gets away from both outfielders careless play on the part of the atlanta outfield and that's the way this one starts in Glens at third with nobody out [Applause] and we still await a ruling on that one I imagine it's a three base hit here the ball one to Chuck Knobloch was three out of six in the first two games play the Atlanta infield is back at second and short don't give up the run and a ground ball [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and now ball to the Knobloch when a right-handed batter hits the ball to right field the ball is tailing back to the right fielder the ball you see is going away from Gant that's Justices ball it was Justices ball the other night however that will probably be scored a triple it is three base hit for Glendon is his first hit and this will put Minnesota on top Knobloch sacrifice fly and the throw by justice has no chance and it is one to nothing in favor of the visiting twins and some people thought that Steve Avery just might shut these twins down altogether [Applause] [Music] we talked about Sunday night and was the banner at the metrodome in minnesota routine pop-up shallow right and watch what happens you may remember it Lemke justice collide the ball hits the turf justice charged with an error that kept getting going and then chili Davis hit that two-out home run that 2 for 6 against it left a 440 foot home runs thrown out another brave was part of the twins let's play in a sacrifice life [Applause] [Music] of that play involving run dance or Herbeck appeared to push and off the base and get a put out I guess it was cheater I thought initially it was t-rex two balls and a strike three and one t-rex if her back goes into professional wrestling once his baseball career is over t-rex will be the name under under which he will wrestle dream to talked about steve avery in that blistering fastball and here even with a count three and one the powerful herb that can't catch up with it well that's a great shot right there [Applause] swing foul keeps it free in two with one out here in the first and a run across for the twins at low home shot right there gives you an idea of what a left-handed hitter sees when he sees a left-handed pitcher the shortstop Belliard should have been a routine in all right now you left-handed hitters out in the audience 94 mile an hour the outside fastball the shortstop [Applause] Kirby Pucket is up the base hit by gladden is the first hit for any of the three Minnesota twin outfielders in this series they had been old for twenty-one Puckett is over eight [Applause] dan gladden he got a three base hit a gift Tripoli nice quarter on [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] one two three [Music] bull baseball we said it before baseball is a game of routine it's the team that makes the routine play more often than not that eventually wins Tom Kelly telling a set today before the game but hitters down earn stripes for Venice [Applause] each of the three will series game trains got a run in the first they send a 20-game winner Scott Erickson to the hill 6 for 225 founder Smith Hamilton and Gantt just as Bremen Olsen that Keith Bella garden Avery of the lineup [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] soda plantain Puckett and Mac [Applause] Knobloch Purbeck Ortiz a personal catcher for Erickson one or more Erickson [Music] this year [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Hilda and took ball two lining is old for six of the series [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] inside part-time Lonnie Smith up two balls two strikes only other American Lake Clinton you can prepare Erickson with Roger Clemens in the Red Sox Dragon Ball fellow wrestler I don't say that because it the results of his pitches but got away he starts his motion with that glove right below the eyes that's how Clemens starts course Roger a high fastball pitcher and Erikson with that secret devastating sinker very heavy and tough to pull lot of ground balls tonight off Erikson who you are thank you trips to Paris you don't chase Lonnie Smith off the plate he struck him out the outside quarter and Smith is gone and he is old for 7 the movement of an Eriksen fastball watch how it starts outside and come back comes back to catch the outside corner and lot into it at the plate now is the cut of the Braves certainly have to get going the Lana third baseman Terry Pendleton he's two for eight without an RBI in the series he was only able to get five hits in the seven games against Pittsburgh but he led the nationally [Music] [Applause] he is due to break out of it [Applause] [Music] the right fielder and a good play by Shane Mack he got a great jump on that ball and made it look easy [Applause] you notice these socks of Scott Erickson right sanitary he is quite superstitious sanitary showing Kevin Tapani the delightfully wry right-hander who one Sunday night's game calls him the day up that he pitches the day of death he's a good one in his first pitch in for a strike to Ron Gant it it is four out of ink and these Braves playing their first World Series game ever at home in Atlanta winds leading one to nothing for aesthetic triple by fled sacrifice fly by Knobloch [Applause] the balls on the straight it's not hitting much aside from their 10 run outburst and then one game against Pittsburgh they're about two runs again deep slow in bangu Pharma terrific in the blame by the Minnesota shortstop and after one the twins lated one to nothing [Applause] [Applause] one-nothing Minnesota here in the top of the second inning when a hitter is ahead in the count he's more apt to pull the ball you could see gagney cheating a half a step at shortstop and made what would have been a tough play and easy plug and Shane Mack is first up against Steve Avery second inning foul ball one to nothing close [Applause] back Laius and gag meter in a second [Applause] a Mac is old for seven days up there happy [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] for the other Jerzy that pot that Steve Avery has inside both kirby puckett and Shane Mack called out on the inside fastball when Tom Kelly the manager of the twins talks his speeches laced with irony he said I don't know why we even showed up tonight and that against a fellow like this I don't think we'll score we're just gonna go through the motions and everybody's already chalked it up for Avery in the braids tonight and look who's ahead the twins wonder nothing in the second one's got Laius at the plate this two four five in series play including that game-winning home run Sunday night [Applause] Ronen tow this is a hitter's ballpark the ball really flies here it's 3:30 down the line in left 385 in the power alleys 402 the dead center and a ten-foot wall very light air Linley circulars stadium and the ball really jumps 200 Kelly was talking about the fact even some of his pitchers hit it out yesterday MVP Scott Erickson and Jack Mars he even said the al Newman hit a home run in batting practice yesterday he doesn't hit many I don't know why we're even bothering to play tonight he said he's a fun guy [Applause] Oh [Applause] three straight strikeouts for Avery and that's that changeup low and away you'll throw it any time Laius reaching and missing right about that Tim three and two doesn't matter to him now feels like throwing it he does here is Greg gagney these two percents and me with a three-run homer [Music] that's it they problem for a right-handed batter you're behind the fastball in of the change-up he's got you going to out of way Avery has been three in a row and he is on to engagement by the Romans follow territory and it's [Applause] an otter twins and in Minnesota's on top one mother kids good in it twins lead one to nothing with a tainted run in the first pair Steve Avery in the middle their spokes is going to be the earlier for raves tomorrow evening earlier this evening warmed up and it's been announced by his manager Bobby Cox said he will work in five seven that it will be avery on Saturday night and spokes on Sunday night and while these twins are staying with a three-man rotation Morris happening and Erickson to justice and a strike Scot had a one two three first inning he had three shutouts this year one and one all three Atlanta left-handed batters look at the eyes of Erikson all hit with an open stance that's foul odor Herbert what does an open stance mean well that means that he spreads your right foot if your left handed batter left a right-handed batter and you fence the pitcher more a gal at the close stance you see more of the back of his shoulder an open stance a pitcher sees more of the front of the shoulder and you can see the open stance of David Justice he's in the hole and he strikes out and that's the second strikeout for Erikson and one of the problems that David just as his hand he's been open too much a breaking ball that stays outside gets David here you see how he goes into the hitting motion but he's got a lot to do with the bottom part of his body anybody who hits with an open stance that's the case and the same thing with Sid green but green isn't open nearly as much as justice and dream of one out of eight in this series he cuts the skipper of of all too [Applause] foul past third base two-in-one [Applause] his pitcher Erickson will get his share in walks he struck out that he walked 71 [Applause] right at her back and five in a row retired by the visiting Hurley Sid Green a good lowball hitter and he hits a low sinker and run back his man trying to become the first base runner of the night for the Braves as Greg Olson while one Olsen two four seven [Music] [Applause] all to Erickson did not have a good second half of the they're twelve and four in the first half eight and five in the second half with an earned run average over five armed problems in the middle of the season as a matter of fact he was supposed to have started the all-star game instead teammate Jack Morris started the all-star game Erickson was on the disabled list with a bad right elbow he walks all summer too [Applause] Olsen at first to Jean will be held by her Beck factor rallies when you get down to the tail end of the Atlanta banning order these players Lemke and Belliard are in there primarily for defense there's a strike especially Getz right-handed pitching because of course Belliard is a right-handed batter and left [Applause] this year from the left side over 250 from the right side so it gets right-handers their bottom part of the order is indeed weak that ball twice foul strike two [Applause] and have sent out front here one of nothing in this drought is comparatively Scott Erickson his moniker is Superman a lot of people think he looks like Christopher Reeve [Applause] here's the start of Superman one two and three I guess and the type of year he had I guess backs that up 20 and 8 on the year super numbers the big man at 6 for 225 breaking ball foul keeps Limpy up there [Applause] you folks at home think he looks like Christopher Reeve a little bit [Applause] to injure we're golsan walk he's the first base runner for Atlanta second to up base hit by Limpy and that gets it back Olson stops at second [Applause] Belliard action [Music] one thing that cannot do is driving a lot of runs hundred and Batsy droven only 27 this year and he is 1 for 3 and the world soul for its against Pittsburgh Kirby Pucket in centerfield entirely too deep rafael belliard would have to hit a ball twice to hit it that far in the air [Music] [Applause] all off the breaking pitch and that's strike two right at the gym - and Mark got area Kirby normally plays deep the line outfielders do but with a guy like Belliard that will not be a play at the plate on a base hit to center field his 2d awesome not a fast runner at second [Music] got a piece of Italy still on to [Music] Steve Avery the pitcher would be up next he's not a bad hitter [Applause] a good athlete and he can swing the bat the Belliard keep it going here in the second on log two strengths Olson walked he's at second mark lemke got the first Atlanta hit in the first and side to [Applause] breaking ball they step we are tied runners end up at second and third and I say about two outs Olsen walks Lemke singles and now belly arse turn to throw that his errand in short hops junior tees to catch her and Olson scores the first run of the game at second and third and Avery could help his own cause all of this happened with two out RBI I know there's a rudder advance the throw to the plate won one game the second baster and Knobloch throws him out and it's too loud for the moment the little guys keep coming through let's check on the fondest World Series memory of Furman bisher of the Atlanta Constitution the one to stick to the most is 1947 Bill bevens had a no-hit game going I forget what game was in the series two men out in the ninth-inning and first no-hitter in the history of the World Series and he never got the last time cookie loud we gotta hit a double and put off the right-field wall scored two runs and he not only lost his no-hitter he lost the game and he never pitched another regular-season major league game in his life that was Furman bisher with that memory turns out the middle Jim Bevins are cookie lavagetto played another major league game after that pop fly to the shortstop Belliard [Applause] by the Atlanta pitcher official agents a longtime writer down here and she got here when you were playing Tim of the minor leagues 1962 up late to the Atlantic crackers ponce de leon park the picture is up Eriksson and see what he can do for your first professional at path to be in the World Series well that's the case with Scott Erickson getting this way now so that way andrea has struck out three for the a Scott Erickson about hitting that's all I'm doing [Applause] a little problem with and we'll get you Scott Erickson's words as Steve Avery waits for Dan gladden to come to the plate he'll give Erickson a little extra time on the bench [Applause] having difficulty getting don't [Applause] when weight off his back here's what Scott Erickson said about his vide can try not to get hit by the ball and I hope there's a runners on off the bungee that's all I'm good for him try not to get hit by the ball simple approach [Applause] you struck out the fourth strikeout victim for Avery we tripled and scored in the first that the Braves have scored to tie it was proud as with it a little more won one in the third the like Minnesota the Atlanta Braves need the crowd in the game I mean they've lost two World Series games up there and if they lose tonight be down three zip landing in hitch one and no team in Major League history has ever come back from a three nothing deficit that's how important this game is tonight for the Braves the best of seven series since 1905 to 1954 20 teams were down oh and - but none came back to win the series the twist on that is since 1955 nine teams that were down Owen - have come back out of nineteen [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] is not that great a feat to come back when you're down Oh two three oh three is a different deal that's a whole new ballgame when their own three picked off [Music] County Stadium after this message and a word from your local station tied at 1 go to the bottom of the 3rd the Minnesota Twins have only played one series in a month on natural grass and the result of that I think you're going to see the infielders playing a little shallow not getting quite the jump on ground balls at their custom to getting on the turf and you see right there scott leius losing his footing for just an instant and playing very close to the bag good for us fast this grass infield is Bobby Cox says it's faster than artificial surface and of course you had the added ingredient of the Atlanta Falcons playing on this field but it is in very very good shape since the last Sunday the Falcons were forced to move their game to San Francisco Ronnie Smith is up and he's in the hole 1 & 2 he was brought on him strikes his first time miss to the top of the order Smith pemmican Gantz two out walk past Eriksson in the second they sit by lefty basic by we're into it in the National League Championship Series Ozzie Smith our Lonnie Smith was old for ten before he connected old for seven in the series [Applause] it's this one foul the aerial shots Hussein in front of a spirit of Eggman brought to you by Goodyear tires in a year local Goodyear retailer the Knights pilot is Captain Pat Henry from Parsons West frigid [Applause] Racing it in the corner is Mac and he made an excellent play Shane Mack got over there in a hurry and takes the ban out of the hands of Lonnie Smith Shane Mack says that if he were not a professional baseball player he'd go back to college and major in real estate and he covers a lot here Chanin's that ball and caught it for the first out here in the [Music] [Applause] - right his first time [Applause] Barry Pendleton spraining his left knee the other night and that slide in the 8th inning up at the Metrodome he will have that knee operated on he's had treatment oh he is it will be slow a foot this evening and throughout the rest of the series and an easy play for Knobloch and there are two god [Applause] got the rookie of the year in the American League take another look at the injury if you'll remember the other night in the eighth inning with Kevin Tapani covering first the slide of Pendleton and then he topples over first base after getting his left foot caught in first place and sprained his left knee and you know have it operated on when the years open earlier his arch and so he was far from top speed ganders up the tour [Applause] the short his first time [Applause] the Braves have not hit a in this series only extra-base hits three doubles [Music] you didn't want it 3-1 [Applause] regular man has it and down in ordered all the Braves in the third we played three and we're tied one apiece [Applause] for thinning and Knobloch leads it off [Applause] handle the hands [Music] [Applause] Avery coming into this game with 16 and a third consecutive inning that's in postseason [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the skies it in the center for Ron Gant do I and consecutive scoreless innings in postseason play Christie Matheson with three shutouts when he said that that's in one postseason and then it goes down to Steve Avery that includes the World Series and League Championship Series [Applause] [Music] he has retired 11 in a row as he deals with Kirby Pucket and a strength we record for consecutive scoreless innings over a period of years held by whitey Ford 33 and whose record did he break Babe Ruth's a looper in the riot and justice and was some play 12 in a row retired by Steve Avery we're still tied [Applause] hittin affairs these pictures hold forth one one Justice David Justice made that fine play to end the top half at the end of a job earlier Scott Erickson retired five in Iran at this point for neuro [Applause] all to the Justin chief and his first time [Applause] the Justice bream and Olson here in the fourth [Applause] [Music] [Applause] left-handed batters hit 295 against Erickson over the season I think if the Braves are going to get to Erickson tonight it's going to be with their left handles paladin justice green one of the reasons for that to be effective Scott has to be down at his strike zone and often left-handed hitters and better lowball hitters and it good and the foul Brown didn't quiet down and go dressed as Jenna took a bow [Applause] series what's up it brings the crowd to light now Ericsson and an artistes are changing their pattern they threw the curveball straight-chain when you get behind power hitters and have to come in with the fastball the chances of him putting the good part of the bat on the ball go dramatic what justice did it good nobody out that's what we're tied about about left-handed batters to be successful Erickson throws it into that zone and with the count three and one that's just a free swing right there at ball a tracer to right-field the cleared the fence about a foot ahead and then Sid Bream at ball laying back into the zone zone a real mistake the green then he doubles off the wall so the left handers back to back and all singers ha [Applause] all under here let's tune in [Applause] [Music] and the rest starts to crank it up for the twins asana beeps short Danny gotta and brain had a staff that's the first out of the na in the second long throw by a gang man short well what made this one different was that he was back on his heels when he made it through the hop dictated that he step back on his heels [Applause] by Craig Gehrke we never had a chance to rearrange the position of his feet to get anything on that ball he had to throw flat-footed from his heels and he just gets old when he hits it to her back to the pitcher another good play to her [Applause] you can forget it to take a right instead of a left he sucks up everything and Tom Kelly telling us that no contest he's the best defensive first baseman in baseball I think I agree with it though it takes a to hobb something [Music] who's single homer running his son [Applause] to the second baseman and that ends the inning three good plays by the three is on top two to one [Music] two to one Atlanta here in the fifth inning and you hear often hitters talking about the sweet spot of the bat well Jackie Gleason wherever you are how sweet it is there was some picture of the home run swing by David Justice and so the Braves say to their 21 year old left eating there you go give you a two to one lead and a flyball to right to be chased by an or just across route made the guy that's 13 in a row retired by a very much joined Jim kaat now one thing that's pretty obvious Jack and Tim you know Timmy when they've said hey relax it's a big game but relax I almost think that Scott Erickson is a bit too relaxed his fastball is about five miles an hour slower than it has been all year and I think he's so consciously trying to throw with it himself doesn't really had that good pop on the ball like twins are accustomed to seeing him they get away with that type of sinker to a right-handed batter but not to a left-hander and certainly last inning proved the case less strikeout victim his first home run heroes Sunday night [Applause] hurt a guy like Avery Jim was talking about lack of velocity with with Erickson and I think that's the case but with Erickson he has so much movement on the ball that he can get away with it a lot more than a guy like Avery who throws high fastball one two [Applause] the only runner the twins of had was on that painted triple by gladden to start the game [Applause] that Timmy he talked about that movement on the ball the difference she put off those guys with that heavy sinker that tonight that sink was just kind of turning over it's not biting [Applause] 14 in the road [Applause] [Applause] Avery winning one to nothing and one to nothing no other pitcher in the history of postseason play as era 1 2 1 to nothing games in postseason and the irony of that is two days before that Zain Smith became a member in the one-nothing Club before that nobody had been involved in two one two nothing games and Smith was evolved into everyone to Belliard gets it that's 15 retired and the Braves need to Deline [Music] [Applause] Belliard in the second home run by justice in the fourth and we are into the bottom of the fifth mr. Atlanta leaves it off Avery had 17 hits during the season his first time up the city [Applause] then for Atlanta hits tonight plus a walk given up and walked across the clip [Applause] to him too Steve Avery working dude and Lenin in the first inning that he hits the ball into right-center a ball miss played by justice and Gant for it knocking that'd be a perfect game right now and a 2 nothing lead [Applause] facts of this fellow mentioned his hitting ability this year he had a four hit game and a three hit game who stays alive first pitcher in the National leg who have a four hit game in a three hit game since 1970 when Mike Torres did it if you wonder grunt wondering about pitchers hitting in the World Series [Applause] strikeout victim and for Erickson that's his third I guess he goes down on strikes but the last pitcher to get a hit in the World Series Mike Moore back in 1989 for Oakland and before that Tim Stoddard back no pictures are now and forward in World Series one at the top of the [Applause] Smith has struck out [Applause] viable they are not using the designated hitter here in the national ballpark if we go Minnesota that again Miss Muffet said well hi changeup or breaking ball but a real mistake from Erikson and Lonnie Smith pounces on it hi hi changeup first post-season all run his best career and this is his 48 page and his fourth world series with four different clubs strike two pebble [Applause] three two one Atlanta [Applause] second home run of the night during the season Erickson batters is not appear to be shark tonight [Applause] Minnesota humor [Applause] such combat with his young girl there Dave justice with a home run in the fourth inning and in this inning Lonnie Smith high changeup series souvenir stays in [Applause] leech in the bullpen now for the twins and I'm a bit surprised with justice and green coming up you remember the left-handed pitcher David West was warming up the last - unusual luck [Applause] it's ron gant [Applause] Lulu's down here again [Applause] [Applause] Erikson pitched four innings and the only start he had against Toronto they've up a couple of runs walked 5 that popped up by Gant for an apparent second out as Knobloch justice has sparkled on the defense and hit a home run not in the forest after one ordinarily Pendleton would be a pair of threat to steal a base but would have an arch and that bad knee [Applause] particularly with Justin something [Applause] the base [Applause] there goes president is in there talking to Tom Kelly before the game tonight he said that nobody can teach instincts is that if you don't have instincts you can't be taught instinctively how to run the bases and Terry Pendleton right here as soon as the ball hits in the dirt he didn't hesitate he just takes off and makes it easily find base running by Pendleton so that's a wild pitch knob two balls and a strike to David Justice [Applause] just it's a little bit of everything a strikeout a homerun a Miss play perhaps in the first inning and then the dance win catch and the countess tune - so he's been very involved very involved on the error and Sunday night's game and that miss play tonight that ball Batman I don't really think his right field play has been as good as it could be as good as it should be as good as it has been Knobloch it bobbles it they got Pendleton but the first error [Applause] Chuck Knobloch with a lot of time and he just boots the ball that's a big league era right there Sabrina trying to cash in on a walk and an error Kelly for the left-hander David Kelly has to make a move he'll go to West try to pitch to sit three the one out Wilson right he wants the left-hander David West Atlanta leading Minnesota three-to-one Scott Erickson is out of there he started Midwest the left-hander the championships the fifth inning one and two hours jokes Hardison and Weston he stuck that part now West throws ball 1 to Sid Bream - on - OH Oh Green is not helpless against left-handed pitcher [Applause] three two one Atlanta home half of the fifth two-on-two Gary Pendleton is the runner at third base and across the way David Justice with Joe [Applause] [Music] great Olson has walked and scored and grounded on run by David Justice the first lead that the Branson [Applause] roundup says Gary fitter Olsen has been a good - out hitter for Atlanta all season long 370 great to some runners in scoring positions second to date Maggie case you're wondering folks I'm telling all he's swimming [Applause] the basis we have battled [Music] all four bridges Homer run shall we Minnesota pitcher [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the place is rocking down here in Georgia where the land of Fulton County Stadium where the Braves has now opened up the lead with in this inning in a 4-1 lead over Minnesota full moon over Dixie the bases are loaded two out we have a new pitcher Terri Lee choose an age 37 as the oldest player in this world series Derrick Rose a secret for him to throw any kind of breaking ball that goes down with his delivery and speaking of delivery what a terrific delivery by Steve Avery but you see the submarining fashion of Terry leaps across with a bases loaded and two out era prolong this any [Applause] there forth [Applause] [Music] he helps Atlantis Bora run [Applause] all slicing foul and out of she Steve Bedrosian down there he will probably be the pitcher when Atlanta hits in the sixth inning Terry leach is scheduled up second and this is the error that Jack was talking about with two outs a very easy play for Chuck and in trying to make the transfer he just bobbled the ball that prolong the inning and the Braves have scored at least one because of that error and ends the inning two runs one hit stranded six will returned on Lana's Portland Java State for this message and a word from your local station [Applause] [Music] four-two-one atlanta and you have another look and the last look at the submarining style of terry leach to get mark lemke and keep the twins in this game [Applause] the last look because it only looks in this inning after jr. Ortiz leads it off he popped out his first time and he told us he might could beat this evening [Music] with Steve Avery on the mound after having been seated on the bench for a long time we'll see if it affects him our teams that are like football Tom Kelly has these hitters from which to choose at from whom to choose Bush Pagliarulo Sorento the lefties the right-handers Braun and Harper and the switch hitters Davis Larkin and Newman looks like teen Larkin on deck with the twins carrying only nine pitchers they do have quite an assortment of hitters from which to choose our teams court set up the middle for head and that is only the second runner of the night for the twins and a leadoff single after 15 in a row had been retired in order good Europe in spirit of Akron continuing a 25-year tradition of World Series appearances it's a big event he can count on a Goodyear blimp being on [Applause] and we do have a pinch-hitter is jean market banning from each all for Atlanta runs charged for the stutter starts [Applause] we went up there playing behind Ortiz at first [Applause] I'm out of stolen base threat and the twins are down by three six that one ball one strike [Applause] every see Tom Kelly sprinkle a lot of at-bats with his middlemen his middle hitters guys like gene Larkin 255 at-bats this year 286 hitter and he keeps all 25 guys on his roster ready for situations like this it's already and heavier Larkin hits it foul back here and stays up with a 1/2 cup go to run in the first [Applause] in the 6th there's chili Davis [Applause] and this fella continued to do it another hit for the twins and the first to have reached in Artie's stops it second mani snip did a good job of getting to vine hitting by gene Larkin a changeup and in a good spot and as Jack said Lonnie Smith hurrying over to get in front of this ball and hold Ortiz to second base Avery had been ahead of both of these hitters in this inning yet a two strike count on Ortiz and he had a two strike count on Larkin and let him get away and just like that the tying run appears at the plate in the person of game he has tripled scored and struck out [Applause] so the twins make it more here in the 6th inning [Applause] a well hit ball by gladden and Lonnie Smith cranks it to the track and makes again runner tags at second and advances to third first and third one out Larkin stayed up first and didn't miss by much good baserunning by junior artis one more bite of cereal this morning and Dan's Latin man had a home run to tie this game up Ortiz at third base [Applause] Gina Larkin at first our teeth sliding headfirst into third base but look at his alignment he's looking at the ball and in the process runs outside the line we all know the closest between two points is a straight line but you couldn't prove it by the way jr. was running from second to third [Applause] now the batter Knobloch he pops it up green calls for it foul ball - OH let's hear from Jim kaat at this moment yeah Jack and Tim I thought what was unusual on that by junior artis moved up and everyone want might say why didn't G market Larkin can hit so I do see him be very cautious on the basis and when you're trailing by three runs kidding you have to be very cautious not the clock and was close to the second base and really didn't have a chance to get back at a cup now it's Herbert two on two out he hits at the center field again at the track and Atlanta still leads there's my favorite and written for his brother and [Music] [Applause] four to one bottom of the sixth inning Atlanta on top you saw Dan Flint and come close to hitting one out and now Kent Hrbek comes very very close to tying this game [Applause] and Avery survives the sixth he gave up to leadoff hits in the inning at the twins strand their first two runners and Steve Bedrosian [Applause] fourth and ball one do Lando's had only four hits and scored four times their first two old ones of the series the balls in the strike the belly Oh [Applause] agnese made a couple of good plays and there's another boy he can pick you know something interesting after her back hit that ball and avery was pounding the glove on his right leg watch her PEC sighs this is after Avery had said something and it could have been then her bag thought he was talking to him but you could see him flashing those eyes to Avery no big deal but a lot of times pitchers get emotional and hitters think they're talking to them Avery is up and he's old for two ball one from Ben Rosa no stranger to this park [Applause] all too [Applause] Minnesota bullpen continues to do the job all four runs charged to the starter Scott Erickson David West good for Sam allowed an earned run in the last 26 and 2/3 innings and dates back to the 87 106 it's a strike in there three and one Steve Bedrosian one of the eleven twins that have World Series experience sigh Young award-winner 1987 I am too Lonnie Smith on deck and ever he goes down swing to out [Applause] back in the fifth inning with one out and nobody on 2 to 1 Atlanta Lonnie Smith pork loin [Music] that was a third Atlanta [Music] if the Braves are close one [Applause] prefer a decision [Applause] a Trojan made two appearances ball in a strike well we're certain that we're going to be playing here tomorrow night 8 o'clock Eastern Time and the twins will be pitching Jack Morris again and John Smoltz will oppose it or series of parents for smokes and the Braves announces evening if we have Game five now a Glavine will come back [Applause] which against Anthony where's the ball and Bedrosian has a 1-2-3 inning we have played six Atlanta Legion for too long we go into the oil stretch any four-to-one Atlanta on top we have a new left fielder as the Braves try to bolster their defense with Keith Mitchell taking over for Lonnie Smith but Ike to mention again the reason for the letters on the sleeve of the Atlanta uniform yes Kirby Pucket leads it off that's a salute to John - the late John Ruan who died this year vice-president of the greys hit5 Puckett and that one's carrying a long way and Mitchell can't do anything about that one and then makes it 4-2 - as Puckett gets his first hit of this world series and the twins fans have an opportunity to greeting here in the seventh day earlier Lonnie's series was a home run and now Kirby Pucket with a home run and that's the salute from the metrodome in minnesota they are showing the game on a very large screen they're several thousand people are involved in watching the game and what a tribute that is to Kirby Pucket end of the twins if that many people would show up when there's no game being put to him you consider the leadoff hits in the 7th plus the ball hit by Clanton and the ball hit by her back there's 1 2 Pendleton and that's the first out Avery is not nearly as several hard-hit balls in the 6th inning and now this rocket by Kirby Pucket down and in a tracer to left it's now 4 2 to Atlanta talked about the sweet spot again how sweet it is [Applause] with the kwibi and makes his call for two to four shot over the wall in left every missiles to scott leius with one out here in the seventh [Applause] ball one strike [Applause] in the right field for justice - uh let's go down to Jim cot well Jack and Timmy Timmy all those years you caught lefty Steve Carlton I wonder how much of the back of his uniform I saw because what's impressive about a breeze delivery he makes an extra little coil turn away from the hitter more so than most pitchers I think that's where he generates a little more power and little better snap on their breaking ball yeah Kenny we talked about hitters have how they have to keep their front shoulder closed it's the same thing with pitchers and Avery does it very well the batter is banging with [Applause] and me over two and two four eight [Applause] I think Timmy you mentioned earlier in the season of Steve Avery working with his dad on these mechanics and where they sure did it right because you don't see many young pitchers where that perfect that flawless of motion absolutely perfect mechanics father's been working with him since he was 8 years old and things go wrong they don't go wrong because that front shoulder is not closed your pitchers talk about their mechanics all the time and Avery's are almost perfect and there they are right into your living room and Yuri children follows it leadoff home home by plucking and out of there to out how do you learn so much at a young age 21 years old and he is a star another young star Macaulay Culkin comparing lifting the difference between Popkin we're out here in the seventh better Minnesota now has four hits [Applause] getting the ball by them quite as regularly as he did No well hitters turn it up a notch you know this is the third time actually yeah third time that many of these hitters are facing they're batsuits have sped up and his fastball is slow down right center for justice and now Lemke goes out and handles seventh-inning stretch turn the score for to Atlanta fans are on their feet here seventh-inning stretch time when scored in the first land it tied him in the second took the lead in the fourth the added to it in the fifth David Justice and Bobby Cox justice in the middle of a lot of things here this evening as he has been throughout this series leave it off Oh with a walk and a run scored [Music] - six than no.12 [Applause] Steve Bedrosian originally signed with the Atlanta Reyes he lives in here as a farm in Newnan Georgia loves the area and strike to to penalty Rosen told me the other day therefore the folks have probably heard the story that one of the Roasters has leukemia he told very very well as Cody [Applause] Oh strike two [Applause] and justice in the Atlantis [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] against smokes or is a powerful winner in Game one and penitent pops it up leading on has it four in a row by bit illusion I can bake 30 strokes I'm Dan is over three four out of another [Applause] Center and the when has it - out and we're going back to Jim Carter you know the blasts are the you bet the David Justice had in the fourth inning we talked about before the game the Twins pitchers have been trying to keep the ball away from it Kevin Tapani did it because that front shoulder is pulling off you see those four pitches are fine but that last one that was right in the joy spot and this is what it looked like to David Justice eyes lit up at his Tim sent a tracer the one mistake they've made to him in this series that home run came in the fourth and snapped a 1-1 tie he bats with two out in the seventh that pitch also came at the count three and one when hitters are in an offensive situation instead of a defensive situation and they are just they can swing from their heels it's like a defensive the quarterbacks gonna throw the ball they don't have to worry about the run pin their ears back didn't that's the same pin there is back and go after that's what hitters do when it's two and oh and three and one yeah one ball one strike that's why it is so important and stressed so much by all good pitching coaches to stale stay ahead in the count strike one the biggest pitch in any count two balls in the strike two up five in a row retired by the erosion two and two [Applause] wonder nothing's ever the trends have to run but how the Braves on top there's Tom Glavine he will pitch Game five if we have Game five full count [Applause] [Music] [Applause] perfect made a good play and six in a row by Bedrosian now we played seven innings as a 4-2 lead over the twins [Applause] here's a pinch-hitter against Steve Avery and it's Brian Harper and ball one so far five t at Minnesota and three two twins at home tomorrow night 8 o'clock in if Atlanta wins will then have a game five on Thursday me ball two to Brian Ortiz was one out of two while he's in there this strike and Romania France across the lake Carl Willis the fifth picture for the toy [Music] be more about his good back control again doesn't walk doesn't strike out very often chili Davis waits on deck to bat for Ben Rogan songs are on the move here only 22 strikeouts and 14 walks on the air usually puts the ball in play every gives a strike this ball umpire called a strike on that [Music] [Applause] across the battle when he was well on his way to first well you saw Greg Olson in the strike zone especially with the cap three and one he reached out of the strike zone to catch it that ball appeared to be outside or low and maybe both that's a big break for Avery right there [Applause] Pendleton scoots it grabs a closet and safe at first we see how they roll that one in Harper gets down to first base nonetheless [Applause] but cause he backhanded the ball they may give him a base hit but because Terry Pendleton is such a good fielder they're going to give it give him an error sometimes you're penalized by your ability penalty is such as Pendleton is such a slick fielder to Gold Gloves to his credit and this is an error but with some third baseman it could have been ruled a hit that brings Bobby Cox out of the dugout he didn't like the 6th inning or the 7th inning in a puckett home run now the error and he lifts speed Avery [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] tying run will be at the plate for the twins who trail for to later in the eighth Steve Avery did all he could seven innings no warts struck out or head struck out five and allowed to run so pina takes over Alejandro Pena obtained as you look at Brian Harper the runner at first base Pena obtained by the Braves on August 31st for Tony Castillo and Joe Roja right-handed pitcher he has been a terrific pitcher for the Braves 11 for 11 and save opportunities during the season three saves during the NLCS plus a 2 a no record and chili Davis when they faced each other in the National League was 3 for 10 against Pena [Applause] they have played behind the runner at first base that's Harper nobody out [Applause] top of the eighth run at the plate davus homered Sunday night he takes ball one and you'll see some fastball I was from painting [Applause] we've won a throat chili Davis fast balls anyway he is a devastating off speed hitter so I'm take the Tommy Glavine changeup the other day deep for a home run he got a big swing of that one about that with runners on base the opposition has one hit last 30 at-bats against Pena in the left field Mitchell back how far is this going we are time we are tired on a by chili Davis and error and a home and a 4/4 game and no-win for Steve Avery tonight twins and up in Minnesota in the Metrodome they are celebrating the home run by chili now the game belongs to Pina and it's for for here in the a crushing blow for the Braves you know face Dan gladden at the plate and a big blow obviously for the twins chili Davis and Scott Erickson roomed together in Minneapolis so I guess Chili's saying Scott that was for the room [Applause] [Music] [Applause] strike two on the foul an opposite field home run 29 during the season to here in the World Series the second two-run homer for chili Davis still nobody out in the Minnesota pennilyn grabs this one and that's the first out here in the air you talk about the twins coming to Atlanta and everybody's talking about the D H and how he's not going to be able to use chili Davis only a pinch hitter all three pinch hitters for the twins tonight have gotten on base single by Larkin a hard-hit ball that was an error by Brian Harper and now the two-run homer by chili Davis so Tom Kelly's pinch-hitting crew getting a lot of mileage out of their hits block is old for two of the sacrifice fly [Applause] Jim Cott but Timmy based on what you just said that pays off with all the offense that Tom Kelley has given those guys off the bench because they led the American League in pinch-hitting I was a big one bites Billy Davis [Applause] [Music] easy for the use of and the twins already two games to none psychologically already the Atlanta Braves with Pena he had 14 save opportunities he hadn't blown one this year this is his first blown save opportunity for the Atlanta Braves come back with a strike cannot lock have 8,000 people up in the Metrodome watching again there's a live shot in this game for a block gets a hit one-out single by Knobloch his first of the night dealing with the big guys in the Minnesota banning water [Applause] 6:9 he sent one Gantt to the centerfield wall to make the catch of a blob all tough situation for Bobby Cox referring that banner referring to her backs picking Ron Gant up on Sunday night but you can't bring the left-hander in right now to pitch to her back because if Herbie doesn't hit into a double play then the left-handers got to face kirby puckett who's on deck now Blanca fret to steal draws a throw stole 25 bases during the regular season think of how Tom Kelley's batting order tonight has worked in his favor this is the first time this year that Hrbek has hit in front of Puckett and there he is hitting in the number three spot against up the middle and on through is a speedy in feel the runner goes to third and makes it Knobloch never hesitated in its first and third one out all really shoots earlier Tim Bennett yep especially if it's hit by getting her back a lot of topspin on that ball a lot of topspin just over piñas head right through the hole and watch Chuck Knobloch he does not stop he just keeps right on going no play on him at third and no one better that the twin would rather have up then the man who's coming up and Bobby Cox tries to figure out a slow down his twins Express and remember kirby puckett hit into more double plays than any other player in the major leagues this year 27 time in the World Series what does he have in mind I think he's going to talk to the infielders I don't think he's even thinking about taking pain yet out of the game he's out there to talk to the infielders right now could tell him where to play you got to get Puckett and Mack coming up potamia has been as savior and he's out there to talk to the infielders and tell them what to do he's talking to Pendleton right there so I think the infield probably will put will play halfway if they play halfway that gives them a shot at the DoublePlay or if the balls not hit sharply they have a chance to come home at the ball to get Knobloch I would imagine that's what Cox told [Applause] this is what Kirby Pucket did in the seventh inning first pitch [Applause] and made the score four to two one in the eighth inning here home run by chili Davis for four after an out a hit by Knobloch and and it and this all Anna loses every down three games to none [Applause] the twins who are doing a lot of things right [Applause] one ball one strike bucket would like at least the fly ball the stamp this time said Bobby Cox was going to go out there and tell the infield how to play you see Ron Gardenhire flashing sign I don't think anything's going to be on not with Kirby Pucket hitting but the infield is in DoublePlay depth the middle infielders are not in they're back first and third one out one ball two strikes [Music] [Applause] that's the sign what'll it be get the strikeout or the double play first and third one out changeup mistaken off and now he's going to go to the in the Dern and Olsen saved a run what a play that was by the Atlanta catcher a to to County well that was a terrific play by Greg Olsen you could see Pena shaking off the change-up he shook off the fastball and he wanted the slider three for the slider and Olson makes a terrific save [Applause] boss gaana can strike out to our got me - that was not a slider that was a fastball a riding fastball inside the Kirby Pucket and it gets him a big strikeout and now Atlanta hoping the momentum goes back to them on another good hitter coming up for the twins and third two out for Shane Mack [Applause] three of the Minnesota runs guards to scheme ever and the fourth to pay no who's served up the homerun to chili Davis [Applause] all for 10 [Applause] in this series on ball one struggle when they babies did his damage with a pinched homerun wants to do his name aeneas struggling to get out of the 8 that's the picture and Knobloch at third in her bag at first [Applause] boom two [Applause] [Music] try to steal away battle between train to get back into it [Applause] runner guard and a foul in the screen you were right jack they did exactly that they sent the runner in her back and then if you're a catcher you have to decide whether to throw through or not count one two still machine that looked like the Braves in theaters we're not going to cover it did did it second baseman shortstop held the positions [Applause] two balls two strikes and it stays the same as her again [Applause] Kelly and his club had crawled back into this winning gardener gives the signs well if her pack has run twice in a row it would make sense for Olson to pitch out and have a guy two and two [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the age that I'm tired [Applause] [Music] now the grades are precarious position batting in the bottom of the 8th times of the twins 4 for the new pitcher for Minnesota their fifth of the night is Carl Willis who was terrific against Toronto in postseason play and then right fielder and batting in the number nine spot is Jarvis Brown and so the pitcher Willis will bat were Shane Mack had been that's in the number five spot [Applause] before [Applause] pouchy for the twins Cyprian chat that is Ashley Championship Series shop [Applause] the first doubled and walked leaves it home [Music] Cincinnati ball two you mentioned that jacket atlanta's in a precarious situation and that is true if you compare them with how they went into the top of the eighth with a two-run lead but a home club hitting in a tie ballgame in the Layden it's a decided advantage twins had to have six outs to keep them from scoring a run and Atlanta has three unless it goes down straight that's low little bream a big swing of the ball that he usually the strike zone very well good lowball hitter but he is in an advantageous hitting position right here 3 & 1 the count he cuts it into left centerfield [Applause] has it and here is Jim kaat Kirby Pucket had a key at-bat in the top of the city and let's take a look at the CBS inside pitch and see how Daniel went after him outside for a ball now a couple of strikes now a pitcher goes away to get a hitter out inside the slider away back with the high fastball inside the polishing off there's a look at it at about 88 miles an hour good sequence Olson is up strike one to him the key playing in that sequence that Jim was talking about the play by Greg Olson catching that slider out of the strike zone that prevented a run Olsson a foul tip strike two Olsen has walked twice he's all for one [Applause] they tied it in the viii but they had first and third and only one out and failed to score aerial shots tonight from the spirit of Akron brought to you by Goodyear tires and your local Goodyear retail still on - I'm Greg Olson both both moons quiet [Applause] [Music] these twins the leaders have been the trophy Willis appeared in two games gave null runs against Toronto all wanna play wanna play by the last to take a hit away from Olson to our big-time play right there scott leius played throughout the minor leagues as a shortstop this spring Mike Pagliarulo having all sorts of problems they moved to Laius to third base the last five games of spring training and that is a shortstops move that he just put on that play great range and here it is again one brilliant play by Scott Lantz terrific an Olsen by plan for the second out and let people's one out of play [Applause] mark Lemke as a hit 1 for 3 they helped Atlanta's score the tying run in the second act [Applause] of all it pops it up for Laius that catch sends us into the ninth inning tied Minnesota for Atlanta for [Applause] [Applause] see Carl Willis on the a pitcher cannot bring his bare hand to his mouth on the mound but watch what Willis does that's a strange movement in the Jim kaat yeah kind of like another North Carolinian Gaylord Perry he's got a few of those movements he has been questioned by cito Gaston but never worn by an umpire well maybe just a sinus condition here we are into the ninth inning of a 4-4 game and we have a pinch-hitter Mike how you ruled off leading it off and batting for scott leius for four in the ninth Alejandro Pena pitched the eighth tries to send it tied into the bottom of the ninth - to the pencil follow and then Harper at Fulton County Stadium in Atlanta Georgia for four game top of the ninth a year low leading in our one and two is batter it a timely homerun in the American League Championship Series that's going to go out of play that was in Game three 10th inning against Mike Timlin with a count of one ball and no strikes a 2-2 game and here's what Pagliarulo did [Applause] wins won that game they won the next day to win four out of five from Toronto where they are trying to make a three games to none against 1 & 2 and it stays that way keep in mind that the Minnesota Twins have never won a World Series Road game they have lost six in a row three in 1965 and three in 1987 and yet get so that's three strikeouts on [Applause] and if you remember that dramatic game game six when pain you came in to face Andy Van Slyke of the Pirates Bobby Cox had asked him to throw more change ups and you could see the fingers coming off the ball that's the palm ball of Alejandro Pena when the fingers come up the ball slows down and that's what got pal D ruler there for the first out in the ninth inning bringing Greg gagney to the plate years old four three and two out of nine [Applause] on ball one strike we mentioned the six in a row in Minnesota you have to go all the way back October seventh 1925 when this franchise won their last road game Walter Johnson won it over Pittsburgh and since that time they've lost 11 in a row including the six at Minnesota Magna hits it in the right justice camps under - ah soda moving from our nation's capital a night so this is the 30th year that the original senators have been in Minneapolis prior to that the only Minneapolis Washington connection was Hubert Humphrey maybe League franchise is Minnesota used to be Harper is the batter reached on an error and scored on chili Davis home run in the eighth that ball will be chased by justice can't get there looking ahead to the bottom of the ninth so number eight hitter due up [Applause] [Music] struggling to [Music] [Applause] to another night [Applause] up the middle and it shoots out whoo our furs on base boys it good two-strike hitter it's where that contact part of his being comes in here's a tough guy to strike out he puts the ball in play this a similar hit that kid Hrbek got in the 8th inning a high chopper that scoots on through a lot of topspin due up was Jarvis Brown back toward the bench [Applause] it's going to be Randy Bush he will bat for brown to watch a bush for a period of time during batting practice abandon the name with a runner at first - OH [Applause] winds have been very successful with a pinch hitters this evening here comes another that Forbush in this series [Applause] it's a forfeit in less than two innings they sit by Harper speaking of a Harper Whitey Herzog was quoted recently as saying that the biggest mistake that he's ever was turning Harper loose outfield deep to the right Forbush there's a stratagem his general philosophy with his pinch-hitters who used Larkin to lead off an inning he'll use Bush who led the American League in pinch-hits in this situation still has Paul Sorrento who's their best long ball friend on the bench he'd used him with nobody on face you're right Jimmy had 13 pinch hits to lead the American League this year Bush fouls it away and that's cocktail this visitor and has been on hit 75 1 & 2 twins have used eight players in the ninth position tonight eight for pinch-hitters actually Jarvis Brown entering the game in defense of free pinch-hitters one defensive glare and four pitches in the dirt and it gets away in there a second with two out a wild pitch Colson couldn't save it this time our furs perched at second [Applause] Olsen chats with him koechers win the balls in the dirt they try to keep the ball centered and out in front of them as you see that ball wasn't centered by Olson and hit his left leg and bounces off they push the big game the Minnesota at second 2 of 2 & 2 the count [Applause] [Music] [Applause] ylr we headed for extra innings it's the bottom of the night sodas out in Atlanta and Mike Pagliarulo pinch it takes over at third [Applause] Randy Bush becomes the third right fielder of the night [Music] [Applause] there's chili Davis he popped the homerun following an error in the 8th inning against alejandro remember Atlanta was in pretty good control in this game to before to one lead into the eighth day an error by Pendleton home run by Davis and a big [Applause] in his second inning for the as Carl Willis [Applause] mrs. where the first 1 for 3 with [Applause] Tommy gray he will bat for pea there's ball to his bag iron can be taught the texture while strike zone and you to strike bunt he had the other night in Minneapolis then because of that Pagliarulo in at third base and even if Belliard gets two strikes on him I would imagine he'll stay in [Music] [Applause] one two and one [Applause] sort of one aim one five two three two that's fall free [Applause] eighth [Applause] [Music] change the pinch-hitter you had Tommy Gregg the number one left-handed pinch-hitter and Cox's change his mind he does not want a pinch-hitter up there he wants a pinch butter he's trying to go the left-handed hitting Jeff Treadway Treadway for Pena [Applause] [Music] this game is tied because of the Tuan homer in the 7th by pinch-hitter chili Davis here it is [Music] and made it for four and that's where we are that's not Mickey Mouse those are the Atlanta rally caps [Music] [Applause] [Music] would kill the twins look we're Pagliarulo is playing a third base as Treadway is up there it's kind of [Applause] down he bunts in the air and the plaintiff first or he [Music] [Applause] - running bye Rob belli on you Tereus position that a runner is when the ball is put in the air this is outstanding base running by Belliard because her back was hauling him home [Music] [Applause] but by taking [Applause] instincts by Belliard the banner is Keith Mitchell ball when to him my face is open in big trouble this is the first at-bat in the series for Keith Mitchell we thought little guys have been doing a lot of harm in this area potential winner on second base there with one out and [Music] Keith Mitchell panning for the first time this evening Michels in the hole 1 & 2 the left-hander Guthrie one and for Tom Kelly they left centerfield well hit the bucket is there - uh and the runner stays at second base [Applause] it's not a grievous mistake but what you want to do on a situation like that is go a third of the way to third [Applause] then you have time to go back to second and tag up and go to third if you go half way you're too far to get back if the ball drops then you're in a position to score if you go right back to tag up and the ball drops you may have a tough time scoring when second base Belliard is too far off he's seen his halfway not a third of the way and by the time he gets back to second the throws they're gonna pitch to Hamilton they're gonna walk Pendleton and pitch to go we're going to walk Pendleton and pitched it can with two out here in the bottom of the ninth [Applause] with a walk but they're putting one of the heroes in Game two [Music] well 250 [Applause] [Music] an efficient staff anymore two years ago going on the same [Music] [Applause] two on two out four Bob all he turns on almost every pitch infielders are reminded and they remind themselves and Tom Kelley reminds them to knock the ball down if you that way you prevent the winning run from score the whole it's short two on two out for for bottle opener right again he was right in the proper spot and that sends us into the tenth inning the positioning of gagney was perfect Atlanta leaves - they left eight we go into the 10th inning for four [Applause] [Music] and as Nana hit since the fifth inning and we're tied 4-4 going into the 10th it's the top of the order for the twins flatten Knobloch and into her bag and a new pitcher the third of the night for the Braves and white standing the second World Series affair [Music] in the 10th [Music] [Applause] Avery pitching and a where until the chili Davis home run off Pena this of course an extra inning game and the last extra inning game last year Game two of the World Series in Cincinnati with Joe Oliver betting [Applause] [Music] Paul is back [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Billy Bates brought the plate Joe Oliver hit here is the top of the order represented by Dan gladden and a triple in the first go to run a painted basic he's 1 for 4 iron ear hit one out in the 6th inning Stanton's first pitch in the stroke latin my block in her back [Applause] standed one of the many left-handed pitchers on this Atlanta staff [Applause] go ahead with 206 and for the leftfielder to the wall anahit starts the 10th inning I had the second hit of the night [Applause] we'll see how the twins play it with Knobloch they bump they'll have her back and Puckett coming up they've got a lot of ways to go they can steal gladden of course you have the left-hander Mike Stanton out there who has a good move to first base you have Chuck Knobloch who's a good butter you can bunt the straight sacrifice and take your chances with Kent Hrbek Stanton is very very difficult on left-handed batters but you do have puck it in the hole but with all of those options what's Ron Gardenhire the third-base coach going to do hitting his sides from Tom Kelly [Applause] leadoff base hit is the ninth of the night for the twins a block as a sacrifice fly and he's 1 for 3 there is black a good baserunner Sid Bream is holding against the runner and looking for the bunt there the strike and shutteth the hidden by he saw Chuck Knobloch tying at the all-time record for rookies and postseason play with the 11 hits and put their leadoff man on in the bottom of the ninth didn't get him around the tense starts with a basic [Applause] and to the second baseman say fat sick on offense lefty sales [Music] [Applause] I don't think he tagged it I think it was a good call here's glad and watch how quickly plantain gets down to second base he sees Lipke make the catch and now the attempt [Music] because he comes back and tags the bed that's a good call by second place empire Rick reading and great base running by glad I wasn't that close [Applause] almost a double play to fail the Braves out of it for the moment and Hrbek is up he bails and that's a strike you as the runner you have to keep your eye on the ball but as importantly the second baseman who's going to catch the ball gladden did both very well an excellent piece of base running by gladden her back could put the twins on top led since the first day that's in strike two Marivic batting in the number three spot deceiving if they get her back out they're going to walk Puckett because remember Carl Willis is batting fifth he's the pitcher so this is a big big out right here runner at second one gone tenth inning all in - on three [Music] - boss sad part right there it looked like her back was looking for the slider we got the heater and now clearly they will walk Kirby Pucket they're gonna put him on he will join gladden on base [Applause] and this will be the first walk given to the twins tonight to go with their nine base hits and the twins running out of players al Newman represents the 20th player used tonight by Minnesota World Series record is 21 and if they make a pitching change he will be the 21st player and that will tie the world series record actually al Newman was on deck and now they have switched to sorrento coming back to Sorrento bidding money one to better Paul Sorrento is going to come up now and pinch it with two on two out [Applause] against standeth when Tom Kelly sent a lumen up there and now he goes with Paul Sorrento [Applause] a good fastball in it as a matter of fact the winds had an option of putting either pedro muñoz or Paul Sorrento on the postseason roster they opted for Sorrento because he handles the fast balls very well we'll see Latin on its second base he started the inning with a base hit there he is [Applause] and then they walk and there are two out and Sorrento could be the twins here oh here in the tenth strike two or for the score there are the runners wins meet a two-out hit [Applause] the seller has [Applause] attended Florida State University home of the Florida State Seminoles that's where the Tomahawk Chop started and now he's hitting and he's got the Tomahawk Chop against him [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] we're all knotted in the bottom of the tent spire crippled by clapping sacrifice fly Bob I'm not lon the eyes single in the second inning but failure rust as homerun snapped the tile home run by Lonnie Smith bases-loaded walk made it four to one going into the and error and then all run first of all Puckett's home run they did ported to that in the eighth inning the home run by the pinch-hitter chili Davis and there's been no scoring since the new pitcher is Marcus Guthrie when you talk about the game being knotted I think that is quite appropriate because there you not citizen status as ballpark mark Gus read the 2012 player used by the twin [Applause] mark [Applause] for him to start justice all for the fast and his swings and its affair so horsepower [Music] or scram thirty feet [Music] Vanna glad but he had control of it then the ball just takes off goodbye to be really straight David with new life [Applause] justice has reached on an error and hit a home run one out of [Applause] referee as we're all sorry record with 21 players Ericsson west leaps Petrosyan Willis two balls two strikes not the only record tonight tasks ahead of him this Minnesota boatman does not give up and he runs they've gone 30 and 2/3 consecutive innings without any earned runs scored against and that's a record justice hits it to short left for gladden and there is one out here in the 10th inning the batter is due to be Sid Bream [Music] [Applause] [Music] a dozen old one [Applause] we got your head of hair [Applause] [Music] [Applause] pretty good they still have argument that's right he's the only one left our [Music] honor to be followed by Olson on ball one strike Lanta put their leadoff man on base in the night down the center go to school and swing this going to be closer to stay while ball two two balls two strikes I'll did it dogleg left in a hurry this copyrighted telecast is presented by [Applause] transmitted at any for express written consent of Major League Baseball [Applause] [Music] all for Atlanta runs that was started Scott Erickson off the hook utter back to the pitcher for the second out whether we're playing putter had that ball gotten past the pitcher at all whatever no play pablor goes up about how to pitch to dribble none is not a player he's not a left-handed hitter or a right-handed hitter Newman is a switcher Olsen with two out ball one Olsson hit six home runs during the regular season [Applause] maybe a ways away but one thing to keep in mind if Rick Aguilera gets into this game he's probably the best hitting pitcher on either Club Rick Aguilera three home runs in one year wants for the New York Mets all some took a strike and even so the pitcher don't pitch around anybody do coming after Olson with two out doing too winds are leading to games to none and we're tied 4-4 on the bottom of the 10th [Applause] Puckett playin all since try say it has to be my five you can't play so deep that if the ball is hit almost straight away that you have no chance that is true on the throw bucket over several steps and he was so deep that his throw is so long that ocean has it done you want to play deep but not too deep [Music] [Applause] and it puts it up to [Applause] all follow Spearman around they have a place open [Applause] searching for something [Applause] [Music] [Applause] I think it boils down do you want to pitch the month dear Belliard run its second two out [Music] [Applause] situation Oh Jack you know you don't take any chances trying to pitch around hitters and game with situations he gets a hint games over [Applause] [Music] [Applause] second thing what's tonight he was taking all the way in its life emphasize and this proceeded so often lucky has such a Guthrie trying to send it into the 11 the Bell [Applause] let's walk by country seven walks given [Applause] rather than stand test casting his eyes elsewhere I'm the left-field wall facing worry trying to get a win in this world sory well that's what Bobby Cox is doing to Jack jeff blauser is not nearly as good Belliard Bowser's head profits that right elbow Bobby Cox is going [Applause] weakened attention so on to offer blazer gate and Guthrie gets ahead on the count [Applause] with a bat there's also on its second use the Barbara goes out to talk McGuffey their plows here could be [Music] it takes a hit two on two out for four bottom of the tank on ball one strike [Applause] with a pitcher due up next standard govern has a base open albeit third base play 2 & 2 [Applause] Olsen's double with two outs and nobody on you see Kirby Pucket playing deep to prevent the double and because him his feet he caused the dump [Applause] two on two out two balls two strikes [Applause] second baseman has it we're going into the eleventh inning the Braves leave two they have left ten eleventh inning coming up we're still tied at four four four ballgame this has been the longest World Series game since October the 11th 1977 when the Yankees played the Dodgers may remember the Yankees won the World Championship that year and in that series they had a 12 inning game versus the Dodgers what you may ask is the longest World Series game ever well back on October 9th 1916 Babe Ruth 21 years old was the winning pitcher for the Boston Red Sox in the longest World Series game in that game 14 innings versus the Brooklyn Dodgers and then about six years later Babe Ruth become an outfielder he did all right I'll say well what the heck to expect from this kid one o'clock in the morning they have a new shortstop at Jeff Blauser and remember Tim mentioned that he is as Belliard and Brian hunter takes over at first and he's done well platooning was Sid Bream at that position the focus right now is on jeff blauser he has made two throws in post season and both have been bad only one error but both throws have been bad and his right elbow is annoying him he is really having a problem throwing the ball so the focus is on Blauser right now and this is al Newman at the plate and delete it off and that breaks the record for the most players employed by one team in a single World Series game and a pop-up to start the 11th inning Lemke gets under it one out Newman Pagliarulo Bob's out to start the 11th time Kelly is not taking his strokes into the clubhouse what is that his Mulligan he's not going to he's not going to go into the 19th hole with his Mulligan using 22 plates tonight he's in such good shape Tim leading two games to nothing he can do almost anything [Applause] there is Gagnon gagney is old for four and to pretend the thread is standing gets a strike in their extent and working his second inning he's the third Atlanta pitcher and he's due to lead off in the bottom of this inning he gave up a single and an intentional walk in the 10th and that's strike two [Applause] the longest game ever a broadcast in with it Cardinal met game 25 event longus when i ever broadcast was in this ballpark the Atlanta Braves in the New York Mets July 4th and 5th 1985 that's the second are standing get stagnant [Applause] well happy Wednesday everyone were at Atlanta's Fulton County Stadium deep in the Heart of Dixie and we're for four in the top of the 11th inning Tim McCarver and Jack buck and a SOTA tied the game in the eighth kirby puckett looks on as Brian bunker bats with two out ball one Jim Koch down at the field level Harper has been on base twice he pops it up that's invest of the home half of the [Applause] [Music] the picture to delete it off for the parade [Applause] twins about hit Atlanta nine to six each team has met an error the error by the Bray's really hurt it preceded a home run by chili Davis had tied the game in the eighth Allen Dylan who used to play in this park as a member of the Montreal Expos takes over at third base he's the third player that that's the only change for the twins and they still have mark Guthrie on the hill there's sixth pitcher of the night we worked the 10th got into two out trouble and Olson doubled you have a walk to left and they got the pinch-hitter blousy [Applause] [Music] I'll say this for Tom Kelly's shooting works here tonight Jenna to go three games up the only players remaining for the Minnesota Twins Rick Aguilera Jack Morris and Kevin Tapani not happening work we'll work tomorrow night Rick Aguilera are really the only able body that Tom Kelly probably hoping now that nobody goes down on him because it if something happens if someone gets injured there's Jack Morris charting for the Knights tonight's game that's right fell into one first pitch is a ball to Francisco Cabrera but if someone gets hurt Rick Aguilera will be a position player now Brera pinch-hitting and at a big swing but filed a bank in its one and one sprinkled among the many heroics of the Atlanta Braves season back on October 21st a three-run homer by Francisco Cabrera to tie the game off Rob Dibble and he lines it to Knobloch for the first out in the 11th inning his first postseason at-bat he hits his scorcher toward second and Knobloch was there but that was the three-run homer then tied it and Atlanta where it is one more time Rob Dibble on the mound ninth inning Ronna went on to win it and 13 innings I was a memorable game for Atlanta as was the Justice home run at Cincinnati the banner now is Keith Mitchell he's had one at-bat he's over one playing left field with Lonnie Smith started Smith had a home run and was 1 for 4 and that's strike two to the rookie [Applause] 1 & 2 it was Ericsson and West English Bedrosian Willis Guthrie came on in the tenth working in the eleventh and he gets the second out of the inning and his first strikeout Guthrie looks like a tough assignment all arms are nice the 6-4 196 pounds got that high leg kick and often what you see is not what you get you had a tendency to swing in his motion instead of the ball right here the hitter with in the high leg kick now that gangly motion it looked like a splitter there Mitchell is down on strikes batter is Terry Pendleton his walk twice one intentionally and he's old for free and 2 out of 11 in the series and in the hole raves haven't scored since the fifth and that's strike two [Applause] family been trying to get on base ahead of Ron Gant here with two out Browns quiet but they're still here folks 1 & 2 they're not walking out on this one 4 for 11th inning [Applause] [Music] this one is yet to be determined two and two Guthries probably looking over land Exar Kun taking a look at can't and samuel some huh Pendleton hits it to her back in down in order go the Braves in the eleventh inning 32 plus innings for the Minnesota relievers and postseason play no earned runs [Applause] [Music] we're 44 and heading into the 12th inning well is it tomorrow or later today the twins and the brains and the 4th game 8 o'clock Eastern Time and we invite you to join us here on CBS neck is gonna win this one [Music] smokes will take on Jack Morris there's heavy heavy load on his shoulder than will have if Atlanta fails to pull this one out in the seventh inning make that the eighth inning an error by Terry Pendleton and this led to the chili Davis home run that was when Brian Harper [Music] got on base on the air and then the next pitch chili Davis off of Alejandro pay me at a left field his second two-run homer in as many days actually as many World Series games he had one Sunday night and that's where we are tied at 4 here in the 12th and that's why we're here that Davis home run in the eighth both teams have had scoring opportunities since then but nothing doing and a soda is stranded 7 they send up a Randy Bush he struck out as a pinch-hitter back in the 930 this new pitcher is mark Wohlers it was Avery Pena Stanton and now Walters Atlanta hurlers have given up only one walk this evening and that was an intentional pass I mention that because Wohlers control hard the strike zone eludes him at times and he's behind two-and-oh and Lana bullpen continues to warm Clancy the right-handed I am the air for Ron Gant on the 12th [Music] and he pushes over to the left-hander is Kent Mercker joins [Applause] the number three four and five hitters will bat in the bottom of this twelfth inning meanwhile the top of the order represented by Dan gladden he's had a single a triple leadoff single in the 10th inning was wasted by the twins back in the seventh II narrowly missed a three-run homer [Applause] there's chili dance [Music] [Applause] these through to the night and there is a ball the ground [Applause] Wednes leading two games to none is still sitting pretty no matter what happens in this one and if they happen to win it there's ball two here's Jim cotton what Tim was mentioning about John snorts hanging around him up in the starting pitchers now Jack Morris sitting over there with the sneakers on but not John Smoltz just in case they need a pinch runner he's ready so they'll probably hang around for a little while and they were knowing a game like this how far are we going to go gladden hits it hard to write for his third hit of the evening and singles with one out here in the 12 [Applause] and the twins have a good way around this and a good base stealer on bass dan gladden in the last game of the playoffs Game five a big stolen base stealing second base and then scoring the go-ahead run and then a single by Hrbek the twins won at 8 to 5 in beating Toronto so look for gladden to run some time during this count and the twin would like to snap the tie here in the 12th inning and then get Aguilera on his feet in the bullpen a banner knobloch he drove in a run with a fly ball in the first and he has a hit 1 / 4 good hit run and combo up there but not a good pitcher to do it against because Wohlers is not in this strike zone often you see that stop what's that Tom Kelly has heat times the throws of the pitcher to home and the catcher to second and if it comes out to three point two five seconds or below he won't send the runner if it's above that however he will send the runner they sit by gladden was his third and the temp for the twins have out hit the Braves ten to six other holes against him DoublePlay ball monkey and its first and third with only one out for the twins we told you about this lightning-fast infield and it hurt and left key at that time yeah that's a double play ball that gets you out of the inning and it looked like what Lemke did he looked up before he had the ball clearly an error watch him look up you see he's ready to flip that ball before he has control that is a common error on a double play ball head like that because you try to get rid of it too quickly and it could be a key error on mark Lemke and I think Bobby Cox is going to make a move now as those pitchers in the bullpen whoever is regularly by NCM marker it's got to go to mercury I would think [Applause] Rick Aguilera of the twins is now up Tom Kelly sniffing a lead here tell you we talked earlier about Rick Aguilera and a batter wouldn't it be something for Rick Aguilera to pinch-hit for mark Guthrie who is in the five hole now remember so if they get her back you might see a walk to Derby puckett to load the bases even if runners are at first and third just thinking ahead and Aguilera is an excellent hitter he's signed to play professional baseball as a shortstop he was moved into the pitching spot so everything determines how they get a perfect perfect but if Berger could strike out perfect they'll walk kirby puckett and get to either Aguilera or gustan Waller's leave and Kent comes in to take on [Applause] [Music] twins and Braves tied here at for this game started with the ball that was miss played in right field and the most recent thing that happened an error by mark Lemke as Jack Mars charting the game he will be the starter tomorrow Minnesota Twins have used all of their regular players and you can look for Jack Mars as Jim kaat said he's got his sneakers on well Kent Mercker is call upon to do good work and Kent her bank is up trying to put the twins on top they haven't let since the first inning in its first and third with one out base hit by clad an error by Lemke Hrbek has one hit tonight 1 for 5 one ball one strike Mercker is usually tough on left-handed hitters have hit only 194 against him he's into the game as the fifth Atlanta pitcher Avery painless Stanton Wohlers and now mercury Landon's a runner at third and across the way it's not luck the runner going for first and a foul as Hrbek calls in the hole we're playing behind like very aggressive player I'm not surprised he was running two stolen bases in Game one he was ready to stop two had had her back swung through that ball mr. clay if he steals second base that certainly takes the DoublePlay [Music] so suck it out of the [Applause] [Music] right smack on the money with regard to what's going to happen and Aguilera is going to be the pinch-hitter here he comes in from the bullpen what about this now you know this is unbelievable he's going to be the 23rd player used he signed as a shortstop he had two home runs he had won in 19 they're going to bring the right-hander Clancy and Puckett and then pitch to Rick Aguilera and if Aguilera doesn't get a head and we're assuming all of this if he doesn't get a hit then he's in there for the duration unless Kevin Tapani the starter Sundy comes back unbelievable here we go yeah [Music] [Music] things are happening here in Atlanta we're in the top of the 12 we're tied at four a new pitcher is Jim Clancy he's the sixth of the night for the Braves and let's go down to Jim cot well Jack and Tim you know Smoltz and Morris might as well go to the bullpen warm-up they're gonna pitch a little later today the next training room to her it's been done before the old doubleheader days that's right be like a split doubleheader on kitty they are gonna walk Puckett the bases will be loaded with two out Guthrie the pitcher is due to hit the score still tied and Rick Aguilera gets a bat and starts to swing on the sidelines this crowd booed lustily when Bobby Cox went out took marker out of the game and brought Clancy in this is the first pitcher to pinch-hit during the designated hitter era since 1973 that's when the D H came in and Rick Aguilera is going to be a pinch-hitter for the pitcher mark Guthrie now the last pitcher to pinch-hit in a World Series Don Drysdale game - and who did he face Kitty Kotik you kidding me this is great you remember that game whoa man those are the days of pitchers look forward to those ABS I remember very well Godfrey the pitcher has just lifted and never batted and professional baseball Aguilera is up with a bases loaded and to us [Applause] that's all and all of Fame here comes Aguilera this pitcher has a - all free lifetime batting average a single and error and a walk have loaded them up Jim Clancy asked to get him out to keep a time and Galera will try put his clever head and then pitch the bottom of woo [Applause] Jim Clancy ever been in a tighter spot than this I'm sure Jim Clancy is telling himself if you've ever stayed ahead stay ahead of the pitcher as a pinch-hitter and he falls behind with the slider nice play by Olson bases loaded two out for four game twelfth inning [Applause] Aladin the lead runner at third base a single and error and a walk it loaded them up grave should have been out of the inning long ago Aguilera hits it into center field Perkins we're still tied Riaan left for that straight at 10 we'll send Rick Aguilera to the hill the action is terrific as we go into the bottom of the 12th inning we're tied at 4 apiece we showed you that justice will follow Brian hunter the number three four five bitters and if the Braves are going to win this when they're gonna have to beat a very good pitcher Rick ocular Apollo's Ericsson West leach better ocean Willis and Guthrie to the mom is the seventh pitcher for the twins they've got a pretty good at-bat duded yeah he did he hit the ball hard but it was right at him and now Tom Kelley's problems are certainly mounting he's used 23 players and you can almost see it in his face look at him shaking his head it looks like he's got an ear piece and he can just imagine what he's thinking now I mean Rick Aguilera has only thrown three innings three times this year that is max for him you know Kelly doesn't want him going that long but if this game remains talent are tied over the next several innings they say baseball one of the only team games without a clock well it's imperative that if the twins win it they have to win it to hurry to save not only to win a ballgame but to save Aguilera's arm they're small so there's Morris they'll look up tonight on the air at 8 o'clock Eastern time with game for Morris enjoy Thank You Tara [Applause] and to the strength of Minnesota relief pitchers thirty two and two third consecutive innings without allowing an earned run and postseason play quested his job so did leave souta's Bedrosian Willis Guthrie a Camaro had two saves already in this series not in a safe position but he's an situation and if you think we're trying to trip you with numbers those 32 and 2/3 might say wow those are earned runs how many unearned runs has that has the bullpen giving up the answer is true attackin Tim you know the one thing I know for bid in the bullpen with a lot of great short believers Bruce shooter who goose Gossage they do not like to come in to tie game psychologically first of all they're not used to it they're used to holding leads not coming in and holding ties I don't know what it is I know psychological ron gant [Applause] was seventh [Applause] and he flies it out in the center field bucket he trots to it and makes the catch for the first out in the home 12-minute antony in the ninth inning with two bernard big lights on [Music] [Applause] and David justices up he hit that fourth inning home run the stamp a 1-1 tie put the Braves on top and that pork to liate Davis hit the home run ball at home runs by Lonnie Smith they have a justice for Atlanta bucket of solar blasts [Applause] [Music] on ball one strike you very wouldn't throw you a little bit of everything and he has strong pitches good fastball a slider and the splitter has really made him a premier reliever he picked it up right before the trade that sent him to Minnesota in the Frank viola Theo justice gets a hit here in the twelfth Bennett [Music] [Applause] the herd legs will hold against justice and I think this is exactly the place manufactured [Applause] right now is pit the situation where he can send the runner in 105 the dream started pinch-hit in the tent skating [Applause] possibly they suggest [Applause] against [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] against Aguilera this year opponents have stolen seven basis without being caught I will see of justice [Music] [Applause] one oak count Minnesota's not going to get you out and I think the most surprising thing up to this time is that these Braves have not tried to run against Brian Harper who does not have a good throwing off good offensive player but I think if the Braves are going to win and even win the World Series I think you have to open things up they've been too conservative on the bases even though they undoubtedly would walk hunter if justice steal the base and that would put it up doles I'm not talking about a steal I'm talking about a hit and run I don't think they have steel speed but they've put that control the hit run not going and ball to either hurt or for the score home half of the club Williams [Applause] justice is gone and a fly ball foul but Bobby Cox had in mind he worked the count to two and oh and if you can do it to a know you can do it two and one probably thinking that no way Tom Kelly is going to pitch out here all the manager can do is get a good pitch for his hitter to swing it and he did for Brian hunter and maybe on again David Justice looking hunter Lippe I feel her way off the line the kind of punching his hitter to centerfield Harper looking into the dugout yes it's not going and I pop up for who the second baseman my block to out so the runners still at first with two gone Brian hunter just under it [Applause] [Music] when down in order in the 11th they left to Menard in the 10th they left to men on our first two out here in the club it's up to Greg Olson [Applause] with just ourselves gained a lot with two outs one of the purposes of the hit-and-run is to move the runner to third and you don't gain a lot here aguilera gets ahead on the count once again the Minnesota outfield very deep to protect against the extra-base hit you want two hits to be two not one at this point each team has left ten [Applause] Olson and hacking edit finds himself with a strike to count he has walked twice and doubling each team has left ten and no one is left early this is a marathon we're in the 12th inning of the third game of the series seventh pitcher of the night for the twins runner going ball one and a stolen base in the winning runs it's going position [Music] the Braves are thinking a little that's the first stolen base by the Atlanta Braves in this series Brian Harper it does not have a good throwing arm as to the third base side and justice has second stolen he's at second with two out here in the 12th one ball two strikes account to Olsen a face is open so they don't have to make the pitches too good built wriggles as four hours old [Applause] and it's 2 & 2 Reince opened a my [Music] Morelli you're wearing it Olson have been a good two-out hitter where Atlanta all season long in particular late in the year three and two impassive sort passive short when the outside ball four put salsa each walk given to Atlanta there's Dave justice with a potential winning run at second [Applause] [Music] [Applause] I'm based by Olson [Applause] [Music] mark lemke you almost was a goat in the top of this 12th can be a hero in the bottom of the inning he has walked in his single and he popped out with two men on I drew the walk in the tent [Applause] Allura gets ahead on the count and that was a pitch to hammer to I wonder what they're doing up there in the net to go about it [Music] the twins can only win it James living room up the middle for lengthy one ball one strike and Jeff Blauser the shortstop waits on deck there he is Lemke hits it in the left pane here comes Jeff remember our theme yes he said think small because it seems like the little men had become the big men in this series less gently and now Lemke the throw by Glenn too late and the Braves win their first World Series that's a little man walking tall here from paddle Brian will return to a bland a stadium after this message from your local station four and twelve Atlanta window they are still celebrating here as we all catch our breath in Atlanta Georgia it is 1246 Eastern time and the Braves have wanted folks in 12 innings 5 to 4 over the Minnesota Twins it was some baseball game tonight and this spaces on the Charter after a while you had to forget that just watch the game yeah I had to turn the chart over a couple of times and just trying different things with rallies something you know do something to change your luck and this team's relentless and hopefully this will make my night a lot easier and we could tie it up tomorrow what is this duty your adrenalin and your emotions right now sitting through a game like this it was unbelievable well it's a game that you think one at one point you've got it and then all of a sudden though they tie it up and then there's a situation where you might lose it and it's like a teeter totter and that's what we've been doing all year but we seem to keep coming up with big hits and like I said Steve's done a great job and this team has made it easier for me to sleep tonight we'll teeter-totter back here a little later today John Smoltz of Jack Morris we'll all be back here a little later today Tim McCarver mentioned and we did mention that
