and I again everybody I Brad Nessler along with Dan Fouts and welcome to the House of Pain here in Houston a good old-fashioned Texas shootout Dan a couple of gunslingers named moon and a Qin and this one today well and one of those gunslingers warren moon he's got the flu so we got to check that out today but he also has four outstanding wide receivers led by Haywood Jeffries the other thing that's bothering moon today is the health of his offensive line Munchak is banged up a little bit duck Dawson will take the place of John Flannery the run-and-shoot of course one of the best offenses in the business but it's not like Dallas whose void of offensive weapon now we've got a lot of offense today we got four guys on the Cowboys that have a legitimate shot at the Pro Bowl on offense Aikman a quarterback Emmitt Smith that running back Novacek it tied in and Ervin at wide receivers there maybe not be enough footballs to go around today it's not the first time these teams have seen each other they work out together in the summer they have scrimmages and then they have of course a preseason battle every year but this one means so much more the Oilers are unbeaten at home they'll try to go to five and O here today and of course they're coming off a disappointing overtime setback last week against the Washington Redskins but they're trying to stay in that hunt for home-field advantage in the AFC playoffs while the Cowboys are in second place in the NFC East and they're chasing that unbeaten game for Washington back deep Alexander right Kenneth Gant as the Cowboys will get the football first in a brand new kicker al del Greco in for Houston and last week the Cowboys pulled the kickoff team of the Cardinals when they switched Gant and right at the very last minute right got the ball and went 71 yards to set up the cowboy offense now down by the 20 the Oilers and the Cowboys and we're underway at the Astrodome Alexandr right from the tremendous speed he flies out across the 25 and the Dallas offense will go to work behind the leadership of the young quarterback Troy Aikman this keeps getting better every week [Applause] offensively in photo Aikman to a gogans depth maaske jisuk Nate Newton Jay Novacek leading all the tight ends in the NFL in receptions there's the backfield Johnston Hammond Smith Harper and urban the wide receivers and the Cowboys we'll start with two tight ends Oh Alfredo Roberts is in as the second tight end to join Novacek just inside its own perfect constant in motion from the Dallas backfield and have expect [Applause] just crossed the 30 before ray Childress let him have it everyone talks about the Houston offense but it is an excellent Euler defense led by this up front for fuller childress Alma's in there in place of duck Smith and Shawn Jones the other defensive end the linebacking core that is range Ian has tremendous feet Al Smith inside with Lamar Layton and Johnny needs on the outside secondary Richard Johnson and Cris Dishman on the corners in Bubba McDowell and ball and oh of the safety second down and nine Dallas is Novacek switches over to the right side [Applause] injunction and motion eight-billion his first throw of the day they got it complete near the 40 it'll be close to a first down Michael Irvin made the catch well Urban's the only wide receiver in the game and he's going against the best defensive back of the Oilers in Chris Dishman watch this tight covered quite Dishman as he sees the pass breaks on it extremely fast but Irvin reaches out in front of him to make that grab and if he doesn't reach out like that Dishman would knock that ball down Irvin with the first catch in the first first down of the day for Dallas the Cowboys from the fort Berlin will trot out to the top of your screen with Harper the rookie in close on the right side first in 10 Dallas apron out to Smith in the flat [Applause] but I got a believe on two yards Sal Smith the Johnny Meade's out there to make the hit well Aikman has to get rid of this ball because the pressure of the front four is getting to him quicker than he wanted to there's the ball out to the Emmitt now he'll make one guy miss and then get up the field for a short gain but this is a real key matchup today number 71 marked ona against Shawn Jones 2na is coming off a strained abductor muscle and that should give him some problems if Jones continued hard outside like that boilers think about a blitz second and seven bacon going deep for Harper a little contacted about the 30 as dis wind was out there with him and Aikman asked to scrape himself off the astrodome turf for the first time it's third and long one thing we're gonna see today is both offenses are going to stretch their opponents defense with long passes but it's not going to be just flat-out streak patterns where they just try to outrun the guy it's going to be off of a double move type of situation that time Arthur went down faked the corner route and then took off deep Dishman made a nice recovery but Aikman again through a long pass to part of the outside and out of bounds the Cowboys were over seven last week to start their game against Phoenix on third down conversions third and seven here Aikman steps in across the middle Novacek and the Cowboys will have to give it up our Labor's covering Wow the Oilers defense will play very deep generally and what they want to do is watch the quarterback watch how deep these guys get and then as the pattern comes down and across these guys will break on it and knock it down Novacek on the crossing pattern here but Lathan gets a good look at it and he drills a Novacek right in the back and it forces Mike Saxon to punt and Ernest givins is back deep for Houston [Music] balus he's going to be able to down this inside the five [Applause] the 2-yard line great work by the cowboy special teams a fifth five yard punt by section 12 minutes and 19 seconds to go first quarter will be the Oilers on offense when we come back score is Houston set to take over offensively for the first time in Warren Moon I don't think expected to start huddling in his own endzone leading the NFL with over 2500 yards in the air already on the season and as Dan mentioned earlier battling a little bit of a flu bug brings his offense up as they'll work from their own two yard line as the single Euler setback and Norton thinks about a blitz for Dallas [Applause] [Music] got it out to the 4 yard line where it'll be second down and 8 Houston offensively Maggs with a bad elbow Munchak Matthews Dawson in there as a starter today with David Williams Dawson replacing John Flannery Minkin who just carried Jeffries Hill Givens and Duncan the Fab Four what a crew / receivers and then yeah and they're all toughest thing for Kevin Gilbert the offensive coordinator is to keep all four of them happy every Sunday he hasn't always been able to a little upset that he hasn't been more a part of the Oilers offense in recent weeks drew Hill in motion [Applause] [Music] bring up third down at about four whenever you're dealing with the end zone as a quarterback what you want to see is the receiver get opened early here it's just a five step drop andrew hill delivers four moon catches the ball with his hands right next to the sideline a very safe pass and a very secure catch to here before the game boiler Milner's all-time leading receiver just added another one but he didn't get a first down third [Music] by some extra time and he's going to be shorter the first time or did he get enough Tony Casillas ran him down the wards a foot shorter so [Music] but the key for the Cowboys is the pressure they put on the quarterback coming into the game with only ten sacks there's only one team in the NFL that has fewer sacks and that's the Cincinnati Bengals let's see just how close moon gets to this first down there's 12 Burt with the pressure but at 34 years old almost 35 moon still has enough speed to get real close to that first down always and ever they'll take a look [Applause] his body up to get that first down not many times when you see a quarterback go headfirst especially so early in the ball game Lauren would just as soon not after run with it too much anymore talk to him before the game about fact that he's been congested all week and maybe that clear the sinuses a little bit there he got it after the 12 good enough for a first down [Music] packages today it's the running shoot of the author's work the Jeffrey up to the 21 hey whoa Jeffords leading the AFC in receptions let's take a look at the Dallas defense Tolbert Casillas Russell Maryland making his first start and the veteran Jeffcoat up front Norton Del Rio and Robert Williams we talked about actually the nickel back in this package with Holton Brown on the corners Horton and Washington the safety well Williams is taking the place of Dixon Edwards as he did last week against the Cardinals when the Cardinals went to a three wide receiver alignment second and short here for the order a long yard to go oh the first down inside [Applause] near the 28 yard line and Norton made the tackle most of the running plays for the Oilers are draw plays and on third and short watch as moon will come back give the ball to pick it and he'll hit this hole right here a little counter type of play with Munchak coming and knocking Tolbert out of the way and pink it makes it a big game or the first now [Music] and lat out early on the unbeaten Redskins and the 49ers here no score with just under nine minutes to go first quarter first and ten for the Oilers Gibbons in motion zip Geoffrey's working out there on Larry Brown the 12th round draft choice [Music] well moon and Jeffries have got it going pretty good already today the key to this play though is watch Jeffries adjust his pattern and keep working for the quarterback on the outside here he'll come down and then work all the way back to pick up this reception loose coverage a three deep by the Cowboys but watch Jeffries just stay alive and although he doesn't pick up the first down he sets his team up with the ideal situation for any quarterback a second and one second consecutive second in short situation kill the Oilers from their own 37 yard line go for it fake not all got it to Jeffries in it out of his hand incomplete at the courting and boy did he take a shot from Horton well that's the no-man's land there across the middle and that ball was sit by Warren Moon but you see he's trying to go deep against the cowboy defensive backs the past protection is good for Warren moon as he fakes it out to the outside hoping to fake ray Horton but number 20 is right there as the ball gets there and he charged it loosened Jefferies can't come up with it but again it was second and short moon went deep the Oilers had almost unheard of 53% Plus on their third down conversions third down in a yard here [Music] real close thought about a blitz more loon calls a timeout I didn't get it in time though laying down all the way down to zero Warren looked up too late and it's going to be five yards against the Oilers there is no time out repeat their down third the yard but third and six come up perused yeah in this type of situation a third down conversion situation the statistics say that there's no way the others coming into the game the Cowboys were giving up over 40% against third downs and the Oilers a fantastic 53 percent market in this situation boilers are probably almost rather throw for the third it is so here they've got their third and six why not from the 32 and it's a drop way to pick it he won't get it only Tolbert Tony Casillas and company there to meet him so that penalty did change things and enforcer Houston punt it really did the draw play it appeared that the Cowboys were ready for it this time as to see us in Tolbert on just a three-man rush but the key guy there is number 51 Ken Norton the Cowboys today want to give moon the look of only five guys in the box but two of those five guys are going to be linebackers Norton and Del Rio and they're excellent open field tackle errs Cowboys blocked a punt last week Greg Montgomery set to kick it away to Calvin Martin back deep for Dallas and they got that one too when they might have a touchdown out of it Williams scores [Applause] [Music] my cult I think God did need an yeah I did and he that's the combination that worked so well for the Cowboys last week when they got Camarillo spun a lot of the attention went to Holt last week that freed up Williams this time Williams gets the attention from the right side watch as the number 30 Isaac Holt comes in here and blocks that ball in the air and what a gift falls right in the arms of Williams big turnover and a touchdown for Dallas Williams just cruised 18 yards my Colts made a career out of blocking kicks and he gives Dallas the early lead Ken Willis he'll try to make it 7 nothing Dallas you just don't see teams blocking punts twice in a row two games in a row like this boys strike with a special teams [Applause] seven minutes and six seconds remaining first quarter and I cold and Robert Williams produce a Dallas touchdown the Cowboys leading the Oilers seven nothing [Music] CBS Sports coverage of the National Football League is sponsored by Chrysler Corporation and its divisions proud sponsors of the 1992 u.s. Olympic team hewlett-packard LaserJet printers they'll get you noticed and by Bud Light everything else is just a light [Music] now the Cowboys out in front thanks to a block punt they lead seven nothing and Willis will kick it away at Coleman and Allen pick it back deep for the Oilers take it come to the two yard line won't reach the point [Applause] Cowboys special teams all fired up well let's take a look at the key play here although it's Isaac Holt that makes the block watch this man right here this is Holt but next to a number 51 here is going to be tackled that's Eric fares Derick Brownlow will come out and pull him away from Holt right there that frees up Holt that's a perfect tackle right here in the illegal play that allows Holt to come in and make the block and the Oilers now trailing by a touchdown work offensively for their own 19 yard line Warren Moon has been sharp early they'll put it up on first down [Applause] I'm Tony Jones in Robert Williams back there covering again the one thing that defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt told us yesterday is that you can't underestimate the Houston or the running game but this man is the guy we got to stop obviously Warren Moon and we've got to make him earn it the old fashioned way 510 yards don't give up the deep one well they had only 25 yards rushing last week that didn't help their cause against the Redskins either improve but for the most part you're going to see the football in the air from this offense second and ten from the 19 [Music] here comes a blitz level by holt as hard as he hit that putt a couple of minutes ago Ernest givins is still down Havanese happy cut last week it was complaining and he only got two this is why you got to keep your head on a swivel out here Warren Moon kind of sets his receiver up for this big hit because hope confused boom that time he had the outside receiver he pushed him to the outside turned back to the inside for this out cut and he cuts the legs out from underneath her and his Givens and plants him on his back big hit for isaac holt 6:37 ago first quarter dallas by a touchdown miss Givens just now making his way to the sidelines because of what just happened on the last play listen to this collision [Music] I hope deliverer is the Big Shot on givin and it was just a bit louder in Gibbons helmet I think so [Applause] third down and a long four for the Oilers [Music] [Applause] watch the middle guy first [Music] [Applause] at Coleman with the catch that's one good thing you can say when a guy gets banged up like Gibbons Dan they have just got a whole bunch of wide receivers to go to at least yeah they've got heat on the roster and it would be real surprising to me if we see Ernest givins anymore today they're checking out everything there that was blindsided shot except it was right in the face as he turned around five out of seven early first time toss there Houston from its own 30 pressure that time again across the middle Tony by Williams it's been the Robert Williams Isaac mojo so far for the Dallas defense yeah it has and you're also seeing the philosophy of the Cowboys normally they like to blitz you a lot more they try to get pressure on the quarterback swith with their linebackers but today and the thing that Houston has seen an awful lot of this year is a lot of deep drops letting or forcing rather moon to go to these short receivers over the middle and have them run for the yardage that time all the speed in the world and Tony Jones has wasn't enough you know we talked about this a little bit yesterday the Cowboys had only ten sacks but does it matter if you're trying to set the correct wound gets rid of it so quickly that and the Oilers don't give up a lot of sacks just under five minutes to go in the quarter [Music] like Colt covering up there on the corner let's check another game where you go to New York and Greg Gumbel Greg all right Brad RFK Stadium in Washington Redskins down three nothing play-action mark rippin finds Terry or in the corner of the end zone seven three that's a nine yard TD Brad all right here it's seven nothing Dallas thanks to number 30 Isaac Holt who blocked the punt earlier in this quarter [Music] I was Givens we just got word a concussion we could against that John he took a few minutes ago [Applause] [Music] third and long for the honors with plenty of time going deep drew hills out there so Jefferies and neither one can get to it I'm not sure who the intended receiver was then well it appeared both of them were in the clear running behind the secondary but they have to run so far to catch up to the deep safeties that your chances of completing that are very hard there you see it moon throws this ball actually between the two guys in blue shirts he overthrew he'll Jeffries had a better shot at him from the outside I wonder what Montgomery's thinking about right now his last putt didn't get far and he got another one stopped Hennelly markers are down the Cowboys have locked another punt Eric Brownlow but let's see about the flag [Applause] [Music] it's against Houston Wow so this one will stand to Brownville was a guy that got the illegal hold on the first block this time the Oilers make the adjustment they cut Brown you loose it he gets the second block of the game the penalty is declined first down the illegal formation they call on the Oilers now that means they didn't have enough men on the line of scrimmage but who can blame them their first punt was stuff Brownlow will come right up the middle I believe between 51 there he Eric Farris turns to the outside and remember bears is a guy that Brownlow tackled on the first block another gift for Dallas very special team so far from the 27th and it's Witten Boyd just what you'd want to do is get a big early lead on Houston because you know they're going to put points up and notice how quiet it is here in this Astrodome there's Joab Asano the special teams coach and he's leading the league right now had blocked punt three in the last two games he's telling saxon don't you do it that way when you when brings up the Dallas offense second and seven with the 24 Houston Cowboys lead by a touchdown Emmitt Smith outside nice pursuit Al Smith the middle linebacker playing like an all-pro this year ran him down it'll be third down well Al Smith is one of the most underrated players in the game but watch his speed and his desire here as he goes all the way the outside and he just stuff Sam and Smith nobody comes out to block Al Smith and he gets the other Smith brother [Applause] as a look at house [Applause] spacing third [Applause] Novacek [Music] got it complete down to the 18 yard line but I think it's about a yard short Allah Dallas first down and it's Johnston the full-back well Aikman has gone down 26 times this year four times last week against the Phoenix Cardinals and the front for the Oilers are outstanding at doing just this Aikman first receiver has shut down to watch again of receiver number 48 this time it's Johnston screening off the defensive back and making the catch now it came back for it but didn't get quite deep enough a couple yards short of the first down so Ken Willis will attempt the 35 field goal we'll escape [Music] [Applause] and with two minutes 11 seconds remaining first quarter thanks to the cowboy special teams they lead by 10 [Applause] the Astrodome in Houston Texas Brad Nessler and Dan Fox with you the Cowboys lead by 10 with 211 to go first quarter and a fifth round rookie out of Illinois Derrick Brownlow has one of the big plays of the day for the Dallas special teams Willis - kicked Coleman and Pinkett back deep for the Oilers in examined [Music] so how to POTUS seemed and he just can't Vicki Pruitt made the tackle on the kickoff return Greg Montgomery is having a rough afternoon he's heard the sound that all kickers dread more than anything else the dreaded double Fudd the other thuds the hand and Brownlow's got the Freak working over there on the sideline I think that's what that dance is that's the quad but we've had to block punts here in the first quarter 510 237 that's Brad low he's a package and the important thing is that the Cowboys have gotten 10 points and taking this crowd out of the game early that they ever from the 12 Houston's field position has not been good they started once at the 2 yard line from the 12 odd first down across the middle here [Music] [Applause] remember Pat Coleman is replacing Ernest givins who's sitting on the sidelines with a king-size headache but talked in Warren yesterday about his frustrations and what has happened with the Euler offense this year they're still way up there in yardage and moon is having a heck of a year but by his standards and when you compare to what he did last year a lot of people are saying it's an off year but it's really defense's around the league or getting a handle on the run-and-shoot and making it very difficult to get those big games second and ten in motion [Music] on the ground he breaks free across the 12 the other my first nine dollars [Music] the tackle well if you're the Cowboys you don't mind seeing the ball in number 20s hands but at some point they're going to have to step up and make a stop this is a huge gain on second down in ten and if the Oilers can get some production out of Pinkett today they could give the Cowboys a real paper shuffling problem because the Cowboys think they have a good idea on how they want to stop the run and shoot but remember the run is the first word in that offense solid numbers on a pink idiotic yard plus games been held in check in recent weeks for the first down run [Music] or enjoy a flag down as Curtis Duncan got it out for about nine yards but penalty markers down this will be the second penalty against the Oilers remember the first one took him out of a third in one situation forced him into a third and six and they didn't convert and now on first and ten they get a holding penalty I will bring up first and 20 so they could see us clapping as though he were the one held holding number 66 on the offense repeat first down Doug Austin the right guard in there for John Flannery the normal starter and Dawson in his defense he's got a touch of the flu as well [Music] here's Casillas right here watch the whole by Dawson [Applause] well that's real if he call there he's seen a lot worse than that could see it's never even went down look like Dawson's trying to get his hands off him at the end makes it first in the Twilight for the others [Music] [Applause] first down Houston heywhat Jeffries so Quan let's get into this and the fans have responded he's not used to no crowd noise here in the dome this is just the run-and-shoot at its finest first and 20 watch Jeffries pushed down to about 20 to 23 yards turn around and the balls on the way Larry Brown with tight coverage but not tight enough just enough for the first down that's that's outstanding play by moon and Jeffries first quarter comes to a close the foreyard pass play moon to Jeffries but the Dallas special teams control the first 15 minutes the end of one at the Astrodome the Cowboys 10 the Oilers nothing can you give me something for this headache doc Ernest givins on the sidelines this is the reason excedrin headache number 30 right here and Ernest is checking out for the rest of the afternoon his teammates have a first down from their own 38 yard line Houston trailing by 10 in the first play the second quarter and Dallas bringing everybody after Warren Moon who got it across to Coleman he breaks free Ray Horton before he got to the 36 you can't blitz Warren Moon it's just an impossible thing to do that offensive line is going to give them time to throw and then you give these little guys like Coleman and Givens and Dru Hill Running Room in the secondary and this is a real mismatch watch after the catches he gets away from the strong safety James Washington and adds about another 15 yards to that short pass tough to blitz number one first and ten for Houston at the Dallas 37 this is their first trip down inside the Dallas 40 the door across to the 27 yard line del Rio made the tack alaa think it's kind of their guy that they work on turf and then Lorenzo White's the guy they can bring in when they're outdoors on real grass well and you hear Jack Pardee talk about that combination of Pinkett and white he says both these players are very unselfish and they fit our system extremely well well to fit this system the number one priority is past protection and then they want them to be able to run with the ball a little bit and then they also wanted to catch the ball out of the backfield well pink it's off to a heck of a start here in the first half running the ball if we would have shown you that graphic you probably think houston that a big lead it's Dallas ten nothing goes deep sideline Jeffries and it's broke for the end zone Larry Brown they've been picking on the rookie all day but in a nice play there but you saw the pump fake by moon but number 24 there Larry Brown didn't go for it good coverage here at the end as he lays out gets that left hand on the ball that was a good pass would have been six for the Oilers I know you talked to Larry about this game and he was having a few nightmares against these wide receivers well it you know he comes into the league he's the only 12th rounder that's starting in the National Football League at the most difficult individual position and that's cornerback third down [Applause] [Music] boy it looked like he was going to be stopped they put a great move on and Ken Norton got him after a pickup of a couple wow what pink it gives the oiler offense is a guy with good vision and he's so sharp with his cuts that he can be patient let his offensive lineman get into their blocks and then picked a hole of course on third and one you can hat you afford to have that patience in that time he had a nice game 1245 to go first half here at the Astrodome with the Cowboys leading the Oilers ten nothing we try to change that as they work first in ten just inside the Dallas 25 [Music] now its first and goal and it fifteen [Applause] well again the Cowboys are going to play thief we saw them get beat by the man-to-man coverage but watch as the safeties just come out Hill will come down and just sit down and make this grab moon comes out to the right side tries to move the secondary that way but look at that huge hole for Hill and that completion puts the Oilers inside the 10 Dallas brings in Danny Noonan on the defensive line russell maryland goes out the Oilers have it first and goal that Dallas ate [Applause] in motion sex right there in the slot on the right side as will zip sit to Coleman not quite [Music] down to the one-yard line just had too many white jerseys draped all over the little guy [Applause] he only goes about 175 pounds here he is number 87 in the slot it's a double out cut by Hill and Coleman but he just doesn't have enough muscle to get in the end zone as Ray Horton not a real big guy himself at 185 bounces him back but the ball is inside the one-yard line door rattling shoot say this is where it gets tough with a Houston offense but only about a foot away from the Dallas goal line second and goal pink it the lone setback motion [Music] we won't get there so a Tolbert made first contact well you called it Brad this is not a goal-line offense we have four wide receivers in there and just one running back no tied in you don't have any fullback and you have to rely on a 34 year old quarterback on the quarterback snake well the defense has nothing to think about except two guys pink it as a tailback and moon as a quarterback not a whole lot of options for the Oilers offense Del Rio that Dallas defense he leads the club and tackles and he'll come up close its third and goal boilers trailing 10 nothing see if they change it here Pinkett is in touchdown Houston [Applause] what's the second effort by Allen Pinkett as he gets hit behind the line of scrimmage just stretches forward enough to break the plane the hands go up music begins we got a 10-7 game we got a good old Texas parley go on in the ass love you blue well play drive and pink and captain from a yard away and here's a brand new oiler kicker and the crowd will go crazy when this one goes right through the middle [Applause] the sleddin a little bit tough down close but Alan Pinkett had just enough and the Dallas lead cut to three little yards for the Oilers and look at that time of possession but still Dallas leads ten seven now because of those two blocked punts but the Oilers had a wonderful drive that time about 88 yards 11 plays 88 yards in over seven minutes back deep for Dallas Gant and a right and Algar echo is dance set cut a big ovation for his extra point it is 10-7 cowboy [Applause] now you won't hear too many cheers for del greco who knocks it out of bounds and the Dallas offense will come out at the 35 [Applause] joy Eggman coming up for Dallas don't forget next Sunday a doubleheader the Redskins still unbeaten and right now leading the Falcons will be in Pittsburgh Chicago and Indianapolis will have at it and the second half of our twin bill that'll be Dallas of the Giants Phoenix in San Francisco and don't forget to join the last word before kick-off the NFL today 12:30 eastern time next Sunday right here on CBS Sports Jimmie Johnson's Cowboys lead by three and work from their own [Applause] so far a blitz the right call of Emmitt Smith can find some company [Applause] got out across the 35 to about the 37 didn't get much Lathan you know the rap on Lathan last year is that he couldn't pass cover and this year it's kind of one of his strong suits dan well he's got three interceptions for a linebacker that's outstanding and he's turned into the turnover man the last couple weeks in the last three games he's been in on six turnovers and for a linebacker that plays in a 4-3 over the tight end as Lathan does that's really unusual usually your guys like Lawrence Taylor in the 34 on the wide open side get all those turnovers pick up the three on the screen pass second and 7 for 8 [Applause] Johnston and Al Smith was covering a naps third of all in Dallas in talking to Al Smith before the game he said that they have studied the tapes of the Philadelphia Dallas game and of course all Cowboy fans know what a disaster that was for Troy Aikman 11 sacks by the Eagles but spit feels that the Oilers once they get everybody helped me along that front line guys like Doug Smith and Lee Williams that they have similar type of talent to rush the quarterback they're doing a good job so far of rushing Aikman soap today now without the wide receiver group here comes the Blitz from the secondary aiklen got rid of it got it out to urban first down for the Cowboys in midfield 12 yard pickup let's take a look at that blitz the one thing if you blitz you better make sure you get to the quarterback watch these guys coming but a nice wall here by the Cowboys gives Aikman just enough time there's the linebacker Lathan 57 and a great block by Emmitt Smith takes him out gives Aikman just enough time to pick up the first down you know we've been talking about how rifle it can get it there quickly together that a couple of big six shooters today who from midfield Dallas leading by three first down [Applause] Smith Flags down Smith into the secondary to bring it back Dishman and mcdowell ran him down that's the first time Emmitt Smith's really gotten tree but they're going to bring it back stamp Kemp's our referee will find out the guilty party as they walk it back to the 40-yard line of Dallas holding 63 on the offense repeat first down gays seek the right guard guilty of the holding call you know for the Cowboys to win this game today you would expect it after getting a couple of blocked punts that they'd have no problem but this is going to be a fight to the very end and if Emmitt Smith were to go over 100 yards say you could almost guarantee a cowboy win but moon has all that firepower on his side first and 20 Dallas from its own for a cake would quickly to Harper first down for the Cowboys of 21 yards play there's a Cowboys top draft choice he's got all the tools six three two oh three [Music] well teams call this the skinny post watch it's to the outside it's not all the way across the middle like most post patterns and then a watch number 26 that's Bo Orlando he's got to read that quick step 5 step drop by the quarterback and break on this play but it's so difficult when it's thrown on time as that one was joy aprons warming up six out of nine for 50 yards has been impressive this drive the Cowboys at the Houston 39 [Applause] more they'll go for the deep ball [Applause] that was Harper out there but dish Lee did a nice job to stay with him you know one call the referees or letting go a lot more this year than they have in the past not so much pass interference but it's the illegal Chuck down the field he used the rule says that you can't Chuck a man or touch the receiver pass five yards down the field but already today we've seen Dishman touch the receiver watch on the outside as Harper's going to fake the out and up and now there's the move there's the illegal contact that's a penalty Fishman out there Harper at the top of your screen again but on the ground the Cowboys and Al Smith just put it on Emmitt Smith it's almost as if the officials are more concerned with being correct on the pass interference part of that call they're forgetting about the first part of it and that's illegal contact third and long coming up for the Cowboys bringing in an extra wide receiver they've got it at the houston 38 yard line with a 10-7 lead with just over seven minutes to go first half Tommie Agee checks into the Cowboys backfield [Applause] the wide reciever crew that's what balance is done on third down so far today apron across the middle almost picked off by Lamar Lathan and they would have had another turnover and he'd like to have it but he did force Dallas to have to give it up he told us yesterday and he'd get two turnovers [Applause] get this 157 with the deep drop and he's checking out where is Novacek coming from the right side there's number 84 and I don't think Kumar will never get an easier catch in his life an interception I don't think Troy Aikman they ever saw that number 57 Saxon DuPont I kick boys mic have old when they almost did they had a great opportunity again the down the putt smogula couldn't quite handle it lost it in the lights it's ten seven Cowboys dan finally the Cowboys got something going on that last drive offensively but their special teams have it right in it Wow two blocked punts in the first quarter 1 for a touchdown the other one the Cowboys took down got paying off their special teams but this guy has the Oilers offense well oil and we'll work from his own point he took a big hit from Larry Brown Jeffries I think might be just a little bit short of the first down he's not short on confidence he feels that he should have been in the Pro Bowl last year with the numbers he put up but the reason he didn't go is because he had a slow start to his season and he's made sure that he got off to a fast start this year leading the NFL in receptions he may have already got his grass skirt ready that's the number one pick out of North Carolina State some questioned his work habits in particular Warren Moon did and he credits Warren Moon with making him the receiver he is and he still works hard at it to pay off for him you got about nine that one second in short it goes right back to Jeffries who's got the first down up to the [Applause] and Norton made the tackle well the Cowboys are going to allow Jeffries and company to catch a lot of these short passes watch the backpedal of Brown 5 yards off Jeffries and then the tackle but not the big play he's already got 5 for 62 on the day and another Houston oiler 1st down the Oilers at their own 39 yard line in motion five minutes to go in the half is pink it was up the middle and pink it got it to the 42 yard line picked up three it'll be second and seven dandy Noonan and on the stop along with Jim Jeff coke Jack party winner and a coach of the year and about every league you can imagine and he's got quite a football team here seven and two coming in and asking him if this is really his ball club now just in his second year he said the one thing that he wanted to overcome from his predecessor was the type of play where they were up and awesome one week and then down and terrible the next week he wanted to eliminate those peaks and valleys and with a seven and two record I think he's done a pretty good job of doing that second and seven I hope others pick it to him think it will get another first down to get to the 49 he got right before the field strike no Pinkett pulled it out for a first down well at some time the Cowboys have got to put pressure on moon they haven't knocked him down yet today one of the amazing stats about the Cowboys in their linebackers is that none of them none of their starting linebackers have a sack or do they have an interception and with Vincent Smith out of the lineup they not only have those stats working against him they have very little depth offensive coordinator they've watched that right there in the middle of your screen and he would love to see some pressure the Cowboys second only to the Bengals as far getting sex they only had ten Coleman and Coleman breaks free down to the 25 Larry Brown holding on for dear life but Coleman's got a 25 yard pickup it's almost as if you just put no number on these guys at all they're all that take same type size and they have the same type of ability but this the fake really is the key on this play Brad as you mentioned there's the fake to pink it look at all the time and space that moon has to throw the ball and speaking of space Coleman found a lot of it and a heck of a shoestring tackle by Larry brown or Coleman's in the end zone first year Pro out of Ole Miss and he's having a big day Coleman first down for the Oilers got some pressure that time and they tried to go to Coleman again complete only Casillas flushed Warren Moon out of the Euler pocket it'll be second intent Fox top to 45 to go in the half Redskins have added to their lead angle is trying to win their second in a row here it's ten seven the Dallas Cowboys with a lead thanks to their special teams and a block to Euler punts the CSN company digs in on the Dallas defensive line second intent for the oil take it right up the line by Del Rio you got a couple that's all it'll be third and long this is a nice another nice long time consuming Drive and if you look at the cowboy defenders on the field you see a lot of guys with their hands on their hips remember moon when 11 yar 11 plays 88 yards the last time they had the ball and now they're in the midst of another long 80-yard Drive Cowboys at 10 points in the first quarter the Oilers have seven in this quarter they've outscored their opposition in fact in every quarter except overtime which was the loss last week against the Redskins final play before the two-minute warning third and eight Oilers in fact they don't quite get the playoff and a penalty marker down I think there's still four seconds left on the I gotta pick this one up I'm sure there is no infraction on the play two-minute warning all right we've worked our way to the two-minute warning at the Astrodome Jack party's Oilers trailing the Cowboys by three the ironic thing is that Givens complained last week about only catching two passes and yet his replacement now has caught four and so that tells me that it's not so much the players it's the system and where those players are aligned Coleman came into the game with just three receptions on the year there's a look at this drive and now it's third and eight [Applause] flags down they got Dawson he's staying down in his dance but I think they got him with a little flinch there illegal start I remember Dawson starting in place of the normal guard down flat number 66 on the offense prior to the snap is still third down second penalty of the day against Dawson yeah but that really changes the complexion of the offensive play that moon will run now instead of third and eight he's forced with what third and 13 his receivers are going to have to push a little bit deeper on their routes Warren Moon 14 of 20 162 yards he's averaging over eight yards per pass seven defensive backs in for the cowboy with Bates playing the middle linebacker spot here comes some Dallas pressure we'll go down flags they're gonna call it a sack that they are Tony Tolbert Tony Casillas shaken up he was part of that group back there to meet Warren Moon [Music] holding his right elbow well you can see the tape already on that right elbow so obviously asked him problems with it coming into today's case that's their first first-time selection is taken away now the pressure is casillas and Tolbert on the sac well and only moments ago they had a third and eighth situation they get the five yard penalty brings up third and 13 now a seven-yard sack fourth and 20 and del greco will have to try his first field goal as an oiler from 52 yards away he hits this he can run for mayor Montgomery to hold del greco from long range to try to tie it up Kim has a chance and he a lot of his constituents they're ready to vote for him al del greco with 149 to go with a half ties it up with this one [Music] we're in [Music] here's NFL today halftime report Greg Ontario of all the scores highlights in the latest information from around the league highlights of this game a moment ago the Houston Oilers al del Greco 52-yard field goal they were tied in ten and one of the reasons Hardy settled on del greco is because of his accuracy from over fifty yards coming into today he was 6 of 16 and when you're over 30% from that distance that's outstanding right he had playing that switch-off game back there for Dallas you know right we'll have a chance from the floor Flags down as he got across the 32 the 31 got an illegal block ball is loose as well [Applause] Tommy Agee I think is going to be the guy that got the illegal block and instead of being out across the 30 the Cowboys will be starting inside their own 15 and kept our referee today and they will walk it off against Dallas [Applause] illegal block number 34 on the return half the distance first down there's Tommy Agee let's take a look at the kick again in 52 yards away almost 53 Isaac Holt gets real close on a beautiful layout there he almost got his second block of the day al Greco kind of steered it in [Applause] draw play Smith broke a tackle across the 20 n Emmitt Smith's got a Dallas first down to the 24 Cowboys are working with just two timeouts though and that's a heck of a start backed up against your own goal line and Emmitt gets a nice gain on the draw play he wants to come out because he's got a shoulder pad problem but he's not gonna have time he picked up 14 you see the clock remaining in the first half Lakeland with some pressure to Smith over the middle and he stiff-arms a man it has another Dallas first down I think are very close to it from our Lathan made the tackle third catch of the day for Emmitt Smith and he came in all NFL running backs and receptions he's up to 38 on the season now he did get a first down flags down keep them down and the ball is down as well we pass but a penalty marker on the play the Dallas moves offensively no I think they're going to get the cow or the Oilers for offsides here [Applause] motion against Dallas it'll be first in 15 coming up clock stopped 48 seconds left and the Cowboys and the Oilers are tied at 10 [Applause] Jimmie Johnson's Cowboys jumped up to the 10-point lead and the Oilers now the second quarter have answered with ten of their own the ironic thing is here we built this game as an offensive battle we've had plenty of offense but all our scoring has been the result of special teams except for the Houston Drive that went 88 yards and the discussion continues we're gonna get a call here finally illegal motion number 88 on the offense five yards still first out Michael Irvin the wide receiver for Dallas is the man that was in motion we'll take a look at it here's Ervin and let's check him out before the ball is snapped that's real close to both guys being offsides all jumped a little bit but he jumped straight up in the air didn't get into the neutral first in 15 heading to the sidelines first down Dallas at the 49 19 yard pickup and Ervin wisely got what he could have him stopped the clock with 42 seconds to go in the hand the Urban's having a heck of a year in discussing what he anticipated today with him yesterday he says well if we get 50 offensive plays 20 of them will go to Emmitt Smith now seven of them will go to Jay Novacek maybe I'll throw Alvin Harper two or three passes the rest are muffin the optimistic outlook that's for sure at the $49 for the [Applause] take the in trouble got rid of it and incomplete penalty markers down at the secondary and this is a long way away from where the ball was thrown to Irvin I wonder if it's a oiler holding in the secondary that's for sure at the 49 [Applause] take them in trouble got rid of it and incomplete penalty markers down at the secondary and this is a long way away from where the ball was thrown to urban kind of wonder if it's a oiler holding in the secondary I think you got it exactly right it is holding on Houston [Applause] and it happened on the far side of the field maybe Dishman or McDowell we'll find out in a second holding number 29 on the defense five yards automatic first time Darryll Lewis the Nickelback number 29 well you have to give some credit to the cowboy offensive line and how much better they are with Mark 2na in the game no sack so far in this first half last week against the Cardinals the Cowboys gave up four in the first half Cowboys have two timeouts left in a first down the oiler 46 joy apron complete he's gonna call the timeout of the 31-yard line 27 seconds left in the half Dallas trying to pick up some points before half-time I'd at 10 with 27 seconds left in Ken Willis who's a good long ball kicker thinking about a field goal attempt before half-time well earlier this year he he got his career long against Cleveland of 54 yards now that's in Cleveland who where they left the grass grown up to your knees perfect kicking conditions for a kicker in any dome and Willis is already within the 50 yard range he is two for seven career two for three this season [Applause] [Music] left to work with [Music] and spit all the way to the 20-yard line Dallas first down you see down always gonna do something here Cowboys want to save their last time out for that field goal so they'll run this one all the way down and bring Willis on for a chip shot would you have wanted one more play there well when you only have one timeout left you've got to make sure that you use that to score some points I would have liked to have seen Pinkman use one of those two timeouts earlier in the drive maybe they could have hustled up to the line a little better and just grounded it to stop things well remember they started this Drive backed up all the way to their 10-yard line they're thinking this is a real bonus here to get three points out of this situation the Oilers had plans on maybe a turnover giving their offense a chance to score some more points but this is a great way to answer that long field goal of del Greco's by the Cowboys now Willis will come on and this will be from about 3738 yards he's perfect inside 40 this year 8 free Troy Aikman by the way on that last Drive for for for for 46 yards and Novacek will Gorillaz [Music] 37 yard field goal attempt by the Cowboys Willis hasn't missed from this rain this season break our Tenten [Applause] we've still got a couple of ticks left before halftime but Willis 37-yard field goal is put the Cowboys back out in front 1310 Dallas [Applause] take it and Coleman back deep I don't think they expect to see it [Music] again the Cowboys have been successful in controlling the crowd today and a couple of chances do sing their song wave their pom-poms [Music] Willis drills it on the ground and it goes out about well the clock does not start until the receiving team touches the ball and they didn't so flag down and the Oilers have one shot from the 35 that's really amazing here here he kicks the ball perfect along the ground it bounces procedure some guys the kicking team and yet the clock moves it will be placed on the 35 yard line first down go Warren Moon and company will have one shot and if there's a quarterback that can throw it all the way down to the goal line it is number one just ask the Atlanta Falcons about it that's how they won a week ago one prayer answered at the end of their game and the Oilers 65 yards away from the Dallas endzone final play first half and the others keep it on the ground had his statistics a little bit as he got it out to the 44 and the Cowboys of the Oilers have played quite a battle through two quarters Dallas took the early lead and they'll take the halftime lead as well the Cowboys by three working on a real tough headache on the sidelines Isaac Holt not only got the big block he got the big hit on Gibbons Warren Moon is Oilers trailing by three but they have won four straight here at home seven straight overall four straight this year that is Troy Aikman who helped engineer an impressive Dallas Cowboy Drive to end the first half and led to their final field goal a 37 yarder by Willis who's just about set to tee it up quarterbacks ones been around a long time and ones relatively young but they can definitely both get the job done and both have looked good today [Music] now the cowboy offensive line is allowed Aikman to have this wonderful percentage that's both exactly the same for both quarterbacks percentage-wise and moon has gone down just one time Aikman has yet to be sacked today no touchdowns or interceptions by either and I would bet the mortgage that that's going to change before this one's over 1310 Dallas with the lead trying to go to seven and three the Oilers at seven and two coming in they'll get the football first to start the third quarter Willis kick will go to Allen Pickett at the five [Music] and pinkett find some room when he's up to the 35 back names Washington finally brought him down a 30-yard return by Pinkett and we got a penalty marker down and a cowboy player down illegal blocks gonna negate a good run back at 30 yards [Applause] when I get Gary Brown number 33 for an illegal block on mr. special teams bill Bates illegal block on the return team number 33 ten yards first out check out number 40 here bill Bates and there's brown reaches out with his right hand and holds them clips and pushes him whatever you want to call it you can call it dates one of the top special teams players in the NFL Ernest givins headache it all back in the Euler line up I seen all those catches that his replacement has had wants to get back to work bet from the 12 [Music] Curtis Duncan and I called was there to let it know he was in the area my Colts put some real shots on some players today including Ernest givins earlier now let's hear him hit Curtis Duncan on this one Curtis Duncan will remember that one for a player too now they're gonna start calling Ike the headache man he's delivered he's given out a few today Isaac hold part of the trade that sent Herschel Walker through the Minnesota Vikings he said 108 98 brings something along good size second and ten in and out hey with Jefferies on the far side another good hit put on over there by Larry Brown the other Dallas cornerback at ECU the one thing that the Cowboys are going to do defensively in this game as quarterbacks both brown and Holt they're responsible for looking in the backfield and keying off the remaining running back and that's Alan Pinkett and they will key coverage if he comes to their side they'll roll the coverage that way he goes away they'll roll it the other way and it's good pretty effective so far [Music] ten here from Maryland 12 yard line I think there was motion on the right side are us Givens look like he came out of his stance just a bit let's see if that's the call if it is it'll be third and 15 [Applause] all-star on the offense still third down they call it a war move well they might they probably got him for a head Bob and that's where you try to draw the defense offsides by moving your head watch Warren's head here as he's going through his cadence and that's a terrible call they got mags as a guy that went off size number 78 there Warren Moon didn't move at all yeah I think Ernest givins moved on this side too I think there was a couple of guys other than move as it is it's the same end result 3:15 [Music] doing so near his own goal line again to the 15-yard line no to the general vicinity you would think of a holding the Oilers and if that's the case the Cowboys can decline this one this is six penalties now against Houston today and it seems like almost all of them have been on third down against their offense offside holding holding holding here 63 fans the penalty is declined 4,000 it's Munchak on this one Dan well let's see Munchak number 63 he's right here at left guard watch him on the takedown move here [Music] as marilyn comes his way splits the double-team but Munchak playing on a very tender left knee [Music] Montgomery finally gets a punt away Calvin Martin takes at the 33 with a lot of room door [Applause] about a 16-yard return after a 52-yard punt Calvin Martin who doesn't get to contribute as much as a wide receiver anymore after being a lot of Dallas top players in that capacity but still a good return man sure-handed that's all they're really asking him to do Brad is catch the ball get as much as you can but the number one thing is secure the catch give the ball back to our offense in good shape let's not have any turnovers if Martin has done that extremely well about a wasted possession for the Oilers 45 seconds is all they had it they lost yardage now Dallas takes over its own 49 go straight ahead for about six yard Shawn Jones in on the stop along with Al Smith the inside linebacker Emmitt Smith right now is in his longest stretch without a 100-yard game he's got to go back to October 6th against Green Bay to find a hundred-plus game is a good gait here well watch the push in the entire offensive line to an a clears out lathe and way down the field and as you mentioned Brad that was a seven yard game on a very simple running play couple of tight ends in the who's the receiver type Alfredo Roberts also in there and sniff out of the I will get it again and Emmitt Smith down close to first down yardage but again a penalty marker early in that play of our Leeson again track down Emmitt Smith to make the stop and an oiler down as well and one lined up in the neutral zone another penalty against Houston automatic first down for the Cowboys you know back in the Jerry Glanville era the Oilers were known as a highly penalized team but they have straightened that offsides number 93 on the defense lining up in the neutral zone this five-yard penalty results in a first time they straighten it out up until today the unusual thing is how many penalties they've had on on their offense and especially in those third down situations they have really hurt the oiler cause Cowboys still buy three [Applause] - yard loss Buller out of North Carolina having one of his better years yeah you know he's having a good year that whether you get a nickname they call him the Fuller Brush man was seven and a half sacks that's it total that's good enough to be number two in the AFC [Applause] second up to the 42 blitz on a cunning travel got rid of it really was swarmed under my Columbia blue Johnny Meads on the Blitz just one of many back there to meet Troy Aikman and it's an unusual type of blitz because they brought the middle linebacker 54 Al Smith as well as number 91 here Johnny means but watch a what Emmitt Smith just gave his quarterback up for mates he whiffed on Meads as he was coming in you seen Smith to take out in one linebacker earlier that time he dipped his head and get a glove on Tommy Agee checks into the cowboy backfield and Calvin Martin comes wide receiver he's in a sock to the right side on third and 13 [Applause] some pressure on Mike but ego deep over the middle area is almost intercepted by Dishman Mike Dumas I stand corrected not this one this is an outstanding job of the secondary anticipating the cut by the receiver watches Aikman throws this ball the oiler is in front of him cowboy Dishman with a super job on Alvin Harper anticipating the deep turn in route and the Oilers almost come up with an interception and now Saxon will have to would love to return the black funk fair [Music] would he ever put a beauty and about the 3 yard line [Applause] second time today Saxon is dump one inside the five dance McAuliffe helped his cause on the special team still the Cowboys with a lead by 3 12 13 to go third quarter and white we'll try it and a big [Music] [Applause] his first carry and they made it count for 16 yards running it off the left side of the Euler line watch Max come out and Munchak white gets in behind and this is his first carry of the day picks up a wonderful game there's Mathews with a nice cutoff block as well but Matthews what a luxury you have as an offensive line when you can take an all-pro guard as Bruce was and now moving the center that just makes your offensive line that much stronger Renzo white man a touchdown last week against the Redskins but also a fumble but that delivered a spider school first down after Jeff to get about four yards out of it nearly Noonan got all the way back there to help out of the tech although with Larry Brown sixth catch of the day for Jeffries for 67 yard and in talking to Bruce Matthews about the switch from guard to center he says that in this system the run-and-shoot system all these guys up front are they play more of a generic offensive line there's really not that much difference between the blocks that you have the one thing he says is that collisions are a lot less of philemon at center they say he is playing though season at center white flipside first down [Applause] [Music] [Applause] going off to a good start 15 more yards [Applause] [Music] one of the real battles along that left side is between Don Maggs and Jim Jeffcoat you see Marilyn's standing up here he's not even down in his stance until the last second he gets cut off by Matthews mags turns out on Jeffcoat in another big game for Lorenzo white so much for bad field position as the orders have a five on the ground another first down just inside their own running a time and trying to go to Dru Hill or do they try to go to Tony Jones he was you're going to Tony to phones Andrew Hill seeing the ball in the air and doing it as all good receivers should do he went for it and knocked it away from Tony Jones this ball is designed to go to the outside here - Jones who's open he'll was as well but Warren knows one thing he's hadn't had this happen very often ooh drew Hill was actually more open than Tony Jones there was nobody near him [Applause] couple of receivers of the same both have fallen incomplete second and ten play white to the 47 Jack Del Rio is there it'll bring up third down and a long three the biggest thing the Oilers have to avoid here in a third down situation is another penalty that's right they've had a quite a few in this most crucial of situations djaq party in his second season's head man of the order 16 wins 10 losses coming into this one where you go [Applause] white stays in there he's all [Music] [Applause] the flat Ernest givins made the catch first down and then some still on his feet he's all the way to the 25 Cowboys are claiming that Gibbons stepped out of bounds up around the 35 yard line the coaches are just boy if he didn't he sure put the brakes on because I thought he was going out too well it's the Blitz coming here's the hot receiver let's see those quick happy feet that's a heck of a job by Ernest givins he's out of bounds there though yep that left foot stepped on the outside Oilers triangles come up they just saw that replays movement hurried them to the line of scrimmage they gonna bring this one back Warren tried to get the Oilers offense up there and did but the officials stopped it just before the snap well and remember what happened last week when moon was sacked by the Redskins Joe Gibbs called timeout give the gave the officials in the booth time to review it but watch this left foot that ones Bush is that the runner didn't know that was out of bounds the ruling on the field is that he did not step out of bounds but that left foot was clearly not about our replay official Jack Fatih today and the head of the NFL officials Jerry Siemens also in attendance at the Astrodome we talked to him before the game so they take a look upstairs you know and we show that replay in slow motion and if we show it in regular speeds they probably won't see it they're going to leave the play this is unusual because what do you have to see to be out of bounds that left foot was clearly out of bounds well Bruce Givens probably only got about size eights maybe it was just the ball of his foot in his heel didn't go out of bounds at any rate [Applause] but that was 25 the shotgun our on and shoot and shoot again - [Music] they got about 70 Russell Marilyn backpedaling to help out on the tackle Cowboys are working harder to get some pressure on the quarterback let's check out who gets close this time moon has to come off his primary receiver there's Tolbert coming from The Blind Side but a nice move by white to pick up extra yardage but look at the hit the back of the head by Tony Tolbert right on Warren Moon or elude over 200 yards in the air [Applause] quarterback trails 13 to 10 they're in an area where they can do no worse has been told a touchdown pass though no for a couple of games [Applause] across the middle first and goal Houston and it's drew Hill [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you know normally you'll see a defense get tired because he's an offense we'll run the ball at them and just wear them down right now the Oilers offense with this run and shoot is wearing out the cowboy defense in fact they just sent in about three fresh defensive linemen first and goal for Houston at the Dallas seventh for the first time today [Applause] you're white or course this dry they got down there the two [Applause] Warren Moon having gone nine quarters without a touchdown fast last week was the first game where he didn't show for a score and that snapped a string of 21 straight games with at least one touchdown toss to check the other scores from around the league here it is 1310 Dallas and Houston trying to change it they started this drive at their own four and they've gone 94 yards in nine play [Applause] second and goal for the Oilers the Jeffery's to the left [Applause] renzo white the single setback gets the quality one [Applause] might have gotten a half yard that's it well the critics of the run-and-shoot will always come to this goal-line situation and say that this is the biggest efficiency of this system we're seeing the Oilers now for the second time inside the 5-yard line having a lot of difficulty punching it across but you know one thing that Lorenzo white having a heck of a series here on this Drive he's trying to atone for last week's fumble against Washington that led to a Washington touchdown there you see it's been over six minutes and the length of the field [Applause] play fake moon in trouble and it's almost intercepted by Isaac Holt's Toby Jones the closest receiver and it's a couple of Huskies that were getting tangled up there Ray Horton from his weak safety spot was ready for the Warren Moon the old University of Washington alum on the bootleg put the nuff pressure on Warren where he couldn't get the ball to his receiver a collision in the end zone Washington slow to get up and Isaac Holt still hasn't gotten up watch from the right side of the screen number 20 Ray Horton will come with the pressure on Warren Moon that's a heck of a job he forces moon to throw it in a crowd and James Washington gets hit on top of the head by one of the Euler receivers and you'll see Isaac Hulk come in with a hand that actually knocked the ball away he was part of that three-car pileup and he's still down but the key thing on that play was it Horton to put his hands up to obstruct Moon's vision but he didn't stop running he kept accelerating trying to get to the quarterback many times you'll see defensive guys stick their hands up trying to block a pass and they stopped running and that gives a quarterback more time let's check this out watch this ray raises his hands but he's still running after the quarterback heads-up play the Oilers only touchdown came following an 88-yard drive this one went 94 yards and will be capped by a field goal attempt upcoming once Isaac Holt is up Oilers have had twenty drives this season of over 70 yards but they find that last ten yards five yards whatever the case might be sometimes to be the tough ones well Isaac hole to put Ernest givins out of the game in the first half is now the one down on the turf here at the Astrodome somebody said something about what goes around comes around and if it does in this league ain't nobody safe out there talk to Isaac before the game and asked him if it helps to have played against the Oilers in the preseason scrimmages in the preseason games and he says at least you get a feel for how speedy their receivers are so it does help that's just just a good old-fashioned collision in the endzone that Isaac Colts on the bottom oh and last week Colt got drilled in the back by Bill Bates so he came into the game with a very tender back this is a good sign and I'm up and walking off the field I'll be back [Music] he's made some big plays today as a three tackle day so far and just knocked down a would-be touchdown toss bring out al del Greco Holtz has really made a heck of a comeback from earlier in the year when he gave up touchdown passes in three straight games we know al can hit him from long range he hit from fifty to a career long a 20-yard field goal attempt to try to give us our second tie of the day snap a little wide that the kick is good [Applause] three seconds to play third quarter the Cowboys and the Oilers are deadlocked at 13 the House of Pain has been painful for something today we've got a good ball game between the Cowboys and the Oilers tied at 13 I Colts one of the pain members of the Dallas Cowboys took a shot to the ribs his return is questionable but he broke up Warren moons pass it into the end zone and forced el greco's field goal which is deadlocked this game 94 yard drive like out by the field goal the Cowboys need Isaac Holt because Warren Moon and company are not through and right back deep [Music] [Applause] across the middle got a nice return out of it out near the 29-yard line don't forget coming up next it's the final round coverage of the Amoco Sentell championship from Hilton Head South Carolina Jim Thornton right now he's your leader that's golf action today following football right here on CBS Sports the 40-something some of us qualify for that age-wise some don't yeah we do the Cowboys from their own 29 5:22 to go third quarter [Applause] without a catch today now he's got one 247 that was the best role of the day for Aikman and the way you can tell is you got two Oilers one slapped his hands that was Al Smith and Johnny Meade's slapped the ground actually is Rick graph number 93 watch Aikman drill this ball between linebackers 54 and 93 gets it in day into Nova Tech not what the two others they can't believe it boy that's pinpoint passing 18 yard pick up Nova checks first catch of the day his 47th of the season and a first down Dallas missed inside its own for the [Applause] the Dallas back for you like [Applause] Alban Harper or the intended receiver I tell you exactly what happens there the cornerback rolls up on the outside Dishman and now Harper has to adjust the route that was called in the huddle and being a rookie that's the toughest thing for him is to make those adjustments on the run that time Aikman expected him to be in the fade area where he threw the ball Harper didn't make the right adjustment second at 10:00 Dallas four and a half minutes to play third quarter were tied at 13 Novacek emotion Nathan [Music] Roberts his other tight end and he gonna have a first down Roberts a former Kansas City chief of plan B addition by the Cowboys gets 11 well he did a great job of getting away from this guy Lamar Lathan Lathan had him after a short gain and not only is Lathan worried about it how did he let that interception get away in the first half he's thinking right now how could I let that guy get away from me Joannie the defensive coordinator for the Oilers he is one animated guy [Applause] for the Cowboys at the Johnson comes as OH to the left side on first Novacek across the middle and the ball loose the Oilers have it [Applause] in talking to defensive coordinator Giammetti about Novacek in this passing game he says we can't let Novacek get down inside on this phone coverage and there's just nobody there to pick up Novacek catches it in front of McDowell they may be reviewing this one got an oiler down on the field so Jones [Applause] take a look at the end of it but watch Novacek on the poster out here wide open there's the hit he's down ball comes loose the ground cannot cause a fumble that's a good call they can't review this one because that one was blown dead right there 309 to go third quarter were tied [Applause] John Jones all right on the sidelines a couple years ago he grabbed his fist through my face mask and rearranged my nose you see with the face mask he's word he's not taking any chances on that payback [Applause] to get through that one first intend for Dallas in motion pressure [Music] for Michael Irvin 13:13 here let's find out what the Redskins and the Falcons are doing alright Brad at RFK the Falcons have jumped back into a - Billy Joel Tolliver touchdown passes in two and a half minutes Andre Rison on the receiving in there 28:17 Washington in the third Brad alright Billy Joe doing alright in Chris Miller out with the injured ribs today both these quarterbacks here in the Astrodome have been impressive Aiken [Applause] opening line two tackles defense or the honors leads the charge they person wouldn't let it go the Oilers defense ranked seventh in the league coming in and their fifth against the rush [Music] most yacht age they've allowed on the ground this year was last week in the loss to Washington 154 yards minor had a big day but they've held a Matt Smith and check pretty well well a lot of those runs at Viner had last week for the Redskins will counter runs the Redskins are great at that counter gap play the Cowboys with Emmitt Smith they are better at running just straight ahead is the counter moving of his own they're 210 here [Applause] nice coverage by Richard Johnson on a pass intended for Michael urban and really a great call by defensive coordinator Jim Eddie with third and long third and ten like that was you can afford to all-out blitz the quarterback and force him throw the ball quickly Gordon to his hot receiver and make the tackle and the offense still won't have enough yards the first down good call that time and Willis perfect today and 13:8 [Music] 45-yard fuel to try to put Dallas Cowboys back in front and Willis got all of it the Cowboys just won't let the Oilers get in front of them we've been tied a couple of times and now the Dallas special teams go back in front 16:13 with 151 to go in the third quarter the Cowboys try to keep pace in the NFC playoff chase and they are right in the thick of it they're off to their best start since 1986 with the six and three record but again the Cowboys are having trouble scoring touchdowns in the third quarter this year they've only scored one and now they've only scored 26 points totally in the third period they have a lot of difficulty coming out of the locker room and scored touchdowns [Music] the Cowboys have a rough road ahead to where Jimmy Johnson against the defending world champions in the Meadowlands and then against the Redskins and of course they gave the Redskins all they wanted earlier in the year and a big lead and saw the Redskins come back to win Pittsburgh and then another division leader in New Orleans but coming in today's game the Oilers the Giants and the Redskins their combined record was 12 wins and only two losses how far is this cowboy team come in the last couple of years one in 15 and eighty-nine seven and nine last year and missed the playoffs by just one those were their home records where Cowboys have to play goes out of bounds if field goals have been a lot better letters kickoffs the Oilers will have good field position for one of the first times today it seems a lot of that is that directional kickoff that a lot of the special teams coaches prefer the problem with it is is if you don't kick it in the field of play you set up the year opponent on the 35 yard line and that's a great spot to be that cowboy scoring drive a moment ago 44 yards and eight plays 342 the elapsed time before Willis hit the field goal and 1613 our score the Redskins answered in a hurry we just heard about the Falcons clothes enable in Washington story their second straight Tampa Bay the surprise on or vote on first down to the other side [Applause] Curtis Duncan and Duncan with a great move to pick up 9 yard he should have been dead in his tracks well Robert Williams is going to go head hunting on Curtis Duncan and he's going to pay for it after the catch watch number 80 dunk his head at the last minute and Williams is going for that oil derrick is in and he misses the whole deal sometime along the line you got a body punch Williams who's got a touchdown today on the block punt by Isaac Holt Holt is out right now a bad secondary of the Cowboys second and short for the Euler I ain't yard-line Larry Brown ready mom pretty good combination of Pinkett and white and it's working extremely well today on this astroturf white is a little bit bigger at 220 pounds carries a little more punch they like think it's quickness in his vision but Lorenzo is having a heck of a second half here sure is 43 yards on six carries and there's the rushing today Dallas with almost nothing and of course they come in with Emmitt Smith who's number two rusher in the leak get on the sideline Lorenzo white stays in for a Houston first down [Applause] the third quarter of the cowboy another completion near the 40 Ford its Kurdish Duncan again boy spreads the wealth around of those wide receivers and the other thing the Oilers do as well as anybody is they pick up a lot of yards on first down so very often Warren is faced with a second in short and we've seen already today their success rate when they've had that situation they get five yards or more on first down about half the time and it certainly helps the cause we played three quarters our score the Cowboys 16 they all are 13 our coverage will continue after this message from your local station you're watching the NFL on CBS Texas the most packets ever been for a football game 63,000 one in attendance for the Cowboys in the Oilers Brad Nessler and Dan Fouts along with you as we start the fourth and final quarter in the Cowboys lead 1613 Houston in Dallas territory with a second and 2 at the 44 [Music] bilkins got three straight catches the war move Isaac Holt is done for the day the pads are off and that's where they're working over on the side that Isaac Holt normally would man well you have this crowd of the largest crowd they've ever had and you just got to think that there's got to be some way that the NFL can take advantage of these great natural geographical rivalries pretty good message sent to Madison Avenue you just de launched the scrapper and the huge is 210 quarters without a touchdown pass for Warren 47 yards of the Dallas ocean and around Ernest givins and he gets him room inside the 30 Gibbons all the way to the 13 he's made a couple of big plays dance since he came back with a headache from the first half well I'd like to have some of his aspirin watch David Williams come over here and make the key block after the fake in the backfield the ball will be fake to Lorenzo white Gibbons is come in on the end around there's Tolbert watch Williams lay him out there screams him off another good block right there forces Norton to cut his angle short and Gibbons is down inside the 15 at the 12 horse down here against the cowboy Lauren [Applause] [Music] we almost expect to moon to put the ball up here and not run it of course Kevin Gilbride is the offensive coordinator he's gone the place but they've had so much trouble down here only getting in for one touchdown and that was a very hard-fought yard that Alan Pinkett got [Music] Kevin Gilbride the brain trust for the Oilers with 13 minutes to play the game still trailing Houston has not led betrayal 1613 [Applause] 14 second at six [Applause] [Music] going through hill and brought up the [Music] boilers say it's against Dallas it is the important to see if he did get the first down because if he didn't this brings up an interesting decision for Jack party do you take the five-yard penalty retain second down or do you take the play and bring up third down looks like he's about bellies that far shy from that angle it's very close about the length of the football or less and I think they're going to take a look at everything before decisions made more moon lab chance to go over to the or Larry sideline remember they're bringing the sticks from the far side of the field that's where they are official and that spot you can only do with your eye so it could vary a few inches we'll find out in a second [Music] well I wouldn't be surprised if they take the penalty and keep it at second down in about one they were about six chain lengths shy of the first time go back out and apparently spot the ball all right so Houston I'm with you I take the second down again but the others are going to take the ball right there [Applause] on the defense the penalty will be accepted it'll still be second down that's all Rebecca while now they move the football back the reason we said that is because they spotted the ball down near the three and now they're just walk it back out take the penalty still second down [Applause] second I'll go about a yard to go into the third and six inches whatever it's all Houston but Dallas is just enough for their special teams that's why they still lead by three now the Cowboys only touchdown of the day game by Robert Williams picking up the block punt from Isaac Colt in the air taking it in for six [Applause] where the League tries to make new rules about how to manage the clock and yet on a very simple play where they have to measure and make a decision we're at spending a lot of time here with the officials chatting to jump ball players want to get going let's play second now in to the Oilers the four for a touchdown two for a first down got a lot of options open to them here all day [Music] now they leave go include Jeffery's put the hole Larry Brown moon puts it in a good spot for Jeffries let's see the tight coverage by Brown but notice the difference there with Jeffries as opposed to Michael Irvin earlier in the game Jeffries lets this ball get into his body instead of reaching out with his hands if you reach out you've got that much more distance cut down but this ball goes all the way into his body Brown gets his left hand in there strips the ball makes a big play the best 12th round pick in the league with that play now it's a very difficult situation still children too still at the Dallas four [Applause] that's two passes in a row that made the play on well you won't see drew he'll do this very often again they tried the double out cut by the inside receivers moon will sprint to his left three steps there's Hill the ball is on the mark and he just drops it look like he'll kind of got his left leg in the way of the arm that wanted to catch the ball incomplete and del Greco in for the field goal attempt of 22 yards to try to give us another time [Applause] El Greco's got it right through new Euler kicker with another field goal at 1216 to play and were back to dead even here at Houston well the Oilers have added twice as long but we're still deadlocked as you take a look at our game summary Williams with the touchdown for Dallas on a black punt they blocked two today but Willis and Del Greco have been true three times two straight drives Oh Dan for Houston that ended inside the five with no touchdown really the ultimate bin but don't break defense for the Cowboys only gave up one touchdown today and the special teams have been the difference in a tie game what 61 yards and nine plays it had to settle for three again el Greco to kick has trouble with it the handle at the five all they got to about the 12 ripped graph other special teams down there with Eric fares you know what that's got to be like it's got to be like crossing the street and dropping your briefcase or something pending over to pick it up and seeing all the traffic nice job on special team the Cowboys have a man down well it looks like Nate Newton he came into the game with a sore left knee [Music] it looks like they're working on his right knee Nate's one of those guys that you can spot sometimes without being able to see his number oh you don't like that [Applause] at the 13 yard line that's where Dallas will start to work tie game with 1205 left you know sometimes when you have these knee injuries like this it's almost better [Applause] that he does feel some pain because if he doesn't then he's got some real damage we'll check out new when we come back a late Newton was helped off the field it appears to be the right knee Eric Williams in for him--it right tackle and Aikman down the middle a Novacek across the 35 our Lathan stayed with him but Novacek got deep in the middle and a pickup after the 38 yard line well again Novacek on the post route and he's got man-to-man coverage by lamar Lathan but look Lathan has his back turned to that ball and Aikman throws a perfect pass and we got another cowboy offensive lineman down this is Kevin Gogan and he's holding the lower left leg and the Cowboys offensive lineman dropping like flies here on well you come into the game with just eight healthy offensive lineman on the roster newton is already not with the sore knee jisuk is playing with the bad knee Goggan came into the game with a bad shoulder to Nate's just coming back for the first game in about five weeks with a bad groin so the toll of injuries on the offensive line has got to be a big concern to Jimmy Johnson hello stories about the only guy left isn't he take a look at me now yeah I will take a look at them and see what happened here he is number 66 protecting the quarterback [Music] and it's one of those cases where he gets pushed back into people that are that have fallen behind him so now the cowboy line consists of step now ski it's Center by grant will come in and guard to an eye an Williams the tackles in DC the other guard so they are not opens one line but left one spare if you will that's they'll Helen straight but another change in the Dallas front that time they protected eight one enough to pick up 24 yards to Novacek first down Cowboys a quittin swings it out to Smith Emmitt Smith's been held in check today he got only about three yards on that one Dishman round amount of miles I talked to norv turner the offensive coordinator for the Cowboys before the game and he was looking at the Oilers how big they were and how talented as they're just going through their pregame warm-ups and he said this man here Troy Aikman is going to be hit today he's going to be hit a lot and now with two of his starting offensive linemen on the bench with injuries he was going to get hit a little bit more norm said to me before the game go talk to Jim Eddie will you and tell him we won't run the fullback if he won't blitz today I think they traded that one off second and seven Cowboys from their own 41 Nathan they go and it's Shawn Jones first sack of the day and Jones gets to the Dallas quarterback [Applause] well Shawn Jones picks up his fourth and a half sack of the year working against mark to an a but this is really a coverage sack because Aikman wanted to get the ball down the field and then he wanted to escape the pocket but the pocket was so collapsed that Jones all he had to do was reach inside to an A and he found himself the quarterback the biggest third down of the day with 10:45 to play tied at 16 its third and 11 Dallas Tommy Agee can he get to the sticks no got to the 45 maybe the 46 but he's at least a yard short but that's okay the Cowboys they got the sack but Aikman gets the ball to AG they get the ball a little bit up the field and now they're going to rely on their special teams Mike Saxon to punt the ball back to the Oilers and hopefully pin him back deep Saxons had six straight years of dropping at least 20 punts inside the 20 and he's got a couple of beauties today he had one out of the two and one at the four and with Pat Coleman back he'd love to drop another one inside the oiler 10-yard line somewhere [Applause] this one won't do it end over end kick and it goes out at the 24 and a little trouble with the snap and then had to hurry it you know that he saw what happened to his counterpart on the other side in first quarter when Montgomery got two blocked [Music] a stream B he's out of the cowboy lineup the Oilers offense on the field will work on its 24 yard line the average length of scoring drive for the Oilers today is 72 yards they find themselves right now 74 yards away from the cowboy end zone you got to give a lot of credit to that Houston defense they have shut down Eggman and Emmitt Smith kept them out of the end zone so far this afternoon should say there's 76 yards away from the Dallas endzone they need only three to take the lead for the first time today first and ten for the olives fine [Music] white here first down you talked about that wonderful average the Oilers have on first down where it's over five yards for a first down that think first down [Music] [Applause] [Music] to the 34-yard line and a first down for Lorenzo white with 9 minutes 10 seconds to play Warren Moon 257 yards in the air on [Music] to give us [Applause] bumped him out of bounds if you add in what warren moon did in the canadian football league to what he has done in the NFL as he came into this one with close to twenty six thousand yards passing and you add the two together you get up for a professional football market that has now eclipsed Fran Tarkenton they tell us don't get to do that right add those two leagues together asking your opinion that's a heck of an accomplishment it's a lot of forward passes a lot of yard targeted on that NFL list and sitting over here to my right [Music] ken-chan [Music] [Applause] in Washington Joey Jones with a 20 yard pickup [Applause] now when you're five foot seven and 139 at 23 you better be fast here is Jones number 82 comes back for this flanker screen Williams gets out in front and then all that speed gets him down the sideline too fast for his own good I ran out of ran out of his own shoes there but he got it to the 28 first out for the Oilers 7:40 to play the game tied at 16 [Applause] to get to the 25 three almost four four Lorenzo will call it second and six Williams and Jones ran into the game the Oilers anticipated the Cowboys to do a little bit more blitzing and they had seen in the last couple of weeks but the Cowboys in studying with the Redskins did last week and how successful they were enforcing moon to make the perfect pass they changed their normal tendencies and have played a lot more zone in fact the only couple of times that they have played man-to-man or blitz moon is burned and come up there and try to show a blitz look a few times but they've all recently [Applause] or Haywood Jefferies the folks in the Astrodome oughta pass interference call on Larry Brown tell you what Larry Brown is playing as good a cornerback position as he could and now he's hurt and he's coming off the field watch this coverage here left hand will go out there the right hand wraps him up but it's after the ball was already there I've got the check on this injury if he can't play then now this starting corners for the Cowboys will be on the sidelines you just can't have your two starters out there in the corners off the field when Warren third and six for the Oilers the hill first down Waller's correction Ray Horton made the tackle but drew Hills got the first down well he'll is the inside receiver right here and he goes down and just stops it's man-to-man coverage across the board for the Cowboys Bray Horton playing deep for Oliver little late on the coverage Kenneth Gantt is the guy that's come in to take [Applause] brown spot corner now Browns back in there comes back in to me hey with Jefferies there on the left of your screen first down others at the Dallas 15 16:16 [Music] you just see moon he's been sacked just one time today talking about all day than throw the cowboy defensive line they're not even getting any push at all and you'd see them walking around out on the field every one of them got their hands on their hips sucking air only the Redskins have allowed fewer sacks this year than the Oilers as a quarterback I love to see that when I look across the line of scrimmage and see those defensive guys breathing hard you know they're not going to get a push on this one the Cowboys ten big hole on the right side Hannah first and goal for Houston at the 4 yard line del Rio and north [Music] Red's always had an excellent man all those defensive linemen are getting tired so what once that is doing now is he took one out these are three down linemen they have an extra defensive back now moon will count how many guys are in this square he sees five he audibles to the run it's a counter played a white great block on the outside by Munchak and white takes the ball inside the five Houston keeps putting together good drives and then stalling inside the five and having a force field goals got it first and goal with the Dallas for Lorenzo white touchdown [Applause] [Music] and the Oilers lead for the first time this afternoon you notice - the first guy to congratulate Lorenzo white with big number 73 David Williams he gets a key kick out block on Tolbert that opens the way and white with a walk in for six 65 yards on 10 carries for Lorenzo like kneecaps it with a four yard touchdown [Applause] I'll put through the first time this afternoon the we're out in front four minutes and 46 seconds yet to go but the Oilers now have a touchdown lead [Music] [Applause] [Music] old-fashioned Texas shootout and for the first time today 63,000 one and Astrodome record to watch their Oilers in front 23:16 with Dan Fouts I'm Brad Nessler we've got a beauty going and the Cowboys will have another team [Music] we'll start from the 35 the Oilers have a hundred forty-one yards rushing on the day here's how they got the last four of those rushing yards well two key blocks here's number 66 Dawson Hill seal the play and now Williams with the kick-out block and it's a huge hole on the right side but it's really a matter of the Cowboys just getting worn down by this run-and-shoot offense of the Oilers 76 yards [Applause] you see the time of possession all day long [Applause] intended for Johnson at second and 10 Dallas [Applause] [Music] but try to take his troops down to tie the ballgame up Goggan is back in at left guard but they had to move the rookie eric williams over to Nate Newton spot and right tackle [Applause] cowboy [Applause] Johnston's got at this time on a first down palace well beloved how valuable is Gerald Johnston to this offense as a fullback he does all those necessary type of things down and dirty deal where you got a block and run the short yardage lead Emmitt Smith up in the hole but his pass catching ability could be the difference in whether the Cowboys can go down get in the end zone whoa and maybe utmost from that 11-yard pickup the Cowboys took the crowd out of it at least for a few moments first and 10 Dallas [Music] Novacek in motion Aikman hit as he throws and [Applause] on Jones from the backside [Applause] people are going to be black and blue tomorrow you know he always noticed it after a good play by an offensive lineman they'll look up to the reap to check out their handiwork [Music] sometimes the quarterback will take a peek to see who the guilty party on his side is Aikman was some good looking numbers right now his team needs a touch now [Applause] get loose at almost four and that's it Dishman and Lathan are there you see the clock in the corner of your screen the Cowboys Tralee Orleans 23 to 16 and in talking to Sean Jones about Emmitt Smith and how you defense him he is that John Wooden terminology The Wizard of Westwood you've got to be quick but don't hurry in other words play the gap control defense a little bit more than you're used to keep your head on a swivel because M it could be coming your way Cowboys and third and six at midfield - goes down fumble Williams will go down there and grab it off his back Dallas ball they're gonna blow it dead but Childress got the sack and he'll force the fumble around the puck well Childress is working head-up on Eric Williams it's a tackle and stunt there's the shot now look at the ball just trickle out Childress has no idea where it is that's a heck of a job of Eric Williams ripping it away from Childress well that looks like a fumble from that angle it was Saxon hits with a mile in the air [Applause] and it touch somebody Bates has it Dallas ball special teams do you believe the Cowboys today hit one of the blocking back Bates picked it up he cannot advance it but the Cowboys will take over and about the 10-yard line it can't advance that as Dan said but still it's going to be first and goal advance' muffed punt and that's what it was when it hits one of the blockers or the receiver let's check it out [Applause] great punt by Saxon because it's real high it hits number 24 Steve Jackson on the helmet Bo Orlando can't get it and mr. special teams bill Bates picks it up what a break for Dallas and suddenly with 248 to play the Cowboys have it right at the 10-yard line here's another look gonna hit him right in the back of the shoulder there and you really can't blame him but when you kick it that high Saxon did that allowed the Cowboys to get down under it and good things happen [Music] look there's Kent he's already down the field and the ball hasn't even come down yet [Applause] and their review on this one upstairs [Applause] I think this is the best angle we've got the hits Jackson right there just grazes his shoulder pads [Applause] first down Dallas trailing by a touchdown touchdown to urban the celebration we're an extra point away from another time well the one thing is the defensive back you don't want to do in this situation on the field it's let the man off inside Dishman gives the inside to Irvin Aikman throws a perfect strike the Cowboys get a touchdown off the turnover but you've got to take away these inside of the defensive pack and prevent that because that's the shortest throw and the easiest rope for the quarterback and all important extra point count up for Ken Willis he's hit everything the Cowboys avenged him to kick today they're asking to be tied up at 43 [Applause] michael irvin five catches for 65 yards on the day and this obviously is the biggest one of the afternoon it's 23 apiece in Houston to pack to the rafters and what a game we've had the Cowboys have just scored and were tied at 23 Michael urban six catches today the last one scored six per valise and again it was a special teams play by the Cowboys that has been the difference and yet it's tickle time all the Cowboy's breaks that they forced on special teams have turned into points and we've got our fourth tie in the afternoon take it back [Applause] Willis kick [Applause] get at the 10 make it across literally all the way to the 38-yard line eight yard return take a look at the touchdown again Irvin with two steps to the outside jumps inside and now Troy Aikman again with the post pattern to Michael Irvin he did this against the Giants earlier this year there's the bow and the yard penalty coming right behind it but that kickoff return by paycut is huge while all the way out to the 38 yard line we've already seen del Greco convert from 53 away so that Oilers now they just need to go about 30 yards to get him within range and 235 for Warren looms a lifetime first down aller white remains a single setback moon rocks across the middle the Jefferies del Rio the linebackers stop number 84 who's having a big day vii catch you the afternoon reveille with Jefferies and wouldn't it be ironic if they put del greco within range to win this one brother last week at this time he was on his way to Birmingham to start a new job he saw that I'll field this one and he said victim that may I give you two-minute warning came before the snap [Applause] so we'll see what the Oilers have up their sleeves when we come back they'll have a second and three and we're tied at 23 the newest Houston oiler al Del Greco just wants a chance to try to win it for the Oilers remember what happened to them a week ago against the Redskins if you missed that one Ian Howe field their kicker missed a 34 yard field goal that would have won the game against the skins he was waived on Monday and in came Del Greco to win the job and now he might be on the burner here shortly 2 minutes to play were tied at 23 Brad Nessler and Dan Fox with he along with 63,000 and Astrid or [Applause] second down along 3/4 Warren Moon get some heat from the backside got away somehow in complete over the little great job by moon of avoiding two men that time and getting rid of that ball he realizes that all he has to do is gain 25 yards to put del Greco at about a forty seven forty eight yarder and most kickers will tell you they feel real comfortable there you go any further out and they get a little edgy right now moon needs three yards [Music] and number three waiting for a chance here's a gigantic third down for both clubs with 155 to play [Applause] deep Hills got it coming in we knew this was going to be a heck of a shootout between two strong-armed quarterbacks we've seen a clins arm and now Warren Moon saves his best pass for right now watch drew he'll cut sharply to the inside and this ball it just drills him in the chest tight coverage by Ray Horton but watch moon stay in that pocket knowing that it's coming from Tony Tolbert he's going to love that result when he gets up just now got to the sideline Warren lune delivers a 22 yard strike fifth catch for Drew Hill and 136 to go two timeouts left for Houston well that's the key right now because the Oilers have a lot of choices now to continue to move the ball closer for their kicker but they also have to think about taking some time off the clock we've seen the quick strike ability of the Cowboys and their kick blocking ability as well today the Oilers guilhom or conservative here now or do they just keep opening it up well I tell you what thing they may still throw it but they will be short passes ball control now take time off the clock and set bail directly up as close as possible at the Dallas 33 houston you see the clock in the corner 136 left were tied at 23 again completes it to the 25 and it's drew hill his favorite receiver I don't know if you can call any of these receivers a favorite of Warren Moon but that guy's caught more in a Columbia blue uniform than anybody else the Cowboys that time coming up this time as Tony Hill comes out Danny Noonan goes in they're going to just rush three guys at moon drop eight and force moon to make the perfect pass 500 yards for the Oilers in total offense second out of two here Lorenzo white that'll be close to a first down clock under a minute and the officials will have to take a look at this one I think well Dallas is going to take a timeout al del Greco has been in town for six days I'll let him stay for six years if it comes down to him and he hits the field goal now the deciding factor in Part D choosing Del Greco besides his percentages on long kicks as it needs a veteran he's been around he's had the experience and this is what happened last week and this is why al Del Greco is here this is with four seconds to go in the Washington game a 33 yarder dismissed the Redskins come back get an interception set up low Miller for the game-winner but that's why this number six is gone and we got a number three in here in al Del Greco and as we talked about earlier the Oilers protected Teddy Garcia instead of Tony's and de Haas in the offseason Garcia didn't even make it in the world league in the spring was cut then de Haas went out to be a star it is I should say with the Rams and now Del Greco may be the guy that will come into play here shortly [Music] third down and Houston that that was 24 Lorenzo white I don't know if he got the first down the Cowboys say no Kenny Norton part of a group in on the tackle and Dallas will take another timeout quickly called that timeout knowing that the measurement is coming up but if they do not have enough for the first down we're going to have to bring on the kicker the other thing you got to remember in the back of your mind and I'm sure that these special teams people on the Oilers realize that they've had two punts blocked today [Music] l del greco coming out on the field when he showed up at the Astrodome today a security guard took him in one of the side doors and the man there says he doesn't have a pass the other guy said he's the newest player the other card said is he one of ours they let him in and he'll be one of our one of the Oilers in a moment for this whole crowd of he hits a field goal [Music] [Applause] [Music] 23:23 al del greco is a box set to go to work in a packaging firm and memo this week and he hit the upright [Applause] and we're still tied at 23 unreal we have had everything today the Cowboys special teams basically have accounted for all 23 of their points and the Oilers had done a great job with their kicking game all day and now Lightning has struck twice - the Oilers placekicker well dunk Greco is a very straight kicker his ball does not look he pushes it out to the side and most of the time sides Sidewinders this ball will hook into the middle he hit the upright boy that he kissed the middle of that upright we hit it perfectly hoping for the hook the ball stays straight and party can't believe in two weeks in a row he's had a kicker in position to win a ballgame late in the fourth quarter and both times they didn't come through and the Cowboys take over with 35 seconds left apron across the middle Michael Irvin 31 yard line and we should tell the folks that joined us for that al brown field goal that he has played extremely well and hit a career long 52 yarder earlier in this game and that was his first attempt of the day the place went crazy because they've been wanting something to put the ball between the uprights I got a feeling though that Del Greco will get another shot at it unless Willis beats him to it that could be the Cowboys have blocked to punch today and turned them into points they also had a punt go off a Houston player they turned that into a touchdown they're tied will the Houston Oilers at 23 with less than 1/2 minutes ago at the Astrid regulation and Shawn Jones has another sack [Music] he's come up big here this fourth quarter [Music] [Applause] that will snuff out any chance for the Cowboys with just 25 seconds to go they're going to have to wait till overtime to get a shot at it because this is their last timeout Jones with another sack third of the day for the Oilers and it looks like we'll have some extra time at the Astrodome [Music] 25 seconds left to play and talking to Jones he knew the to an a was hurt with a bad groin he said I'm gonna chest that groin to the outside with speed rushes all day long and then I'm going to put on my very best move for when we need it most and I think we just saw it [Music] jokes came in with over 60 sacks at his Guerrieri at 3 and a half on the season cometh and he's gotten just about that much today and I really owe a lot to Sean Jones but he broke my notes in 1987 1986 he got me thinking about the LAF part of my life life after football third and 11 ballast the career adjustment faithlyn still try to - Ervin again across the little [Music] close to a first down and the clockwork at its way down no I thought to using timeout here it is a first down so good job by urban Cowboys with a clock running no way is stopping it got it stopped with one second left so we've got one play left in regulation [Applause] now this will be two overtimes in a row for the Houston Oilers last week that heartbreaker against the Redskins and this one they got to be wondering what do we have to do to win one of these games sometimes there's just a jinx on a certain part of your team you'll get a lot of injuries to one position like the 49ers maybe thinking that their quarterback position is jinx well the Oilers have got to be thinking that their place bowl place picking is Jake the Oilers Jim Eddie say don't let anybody catch this and don't have a pass interference and they broke it up in its Dishman and we'll go to overtime [Applause] what a game we've had at the Astrodome and at the end of four quarters the Cowboys and the Oilers still have not decided this one and an all-important coin toss coming up the Oilers looking for their eighth win the Cowboys looking for their seventh and remember the Oilers had an opportunity with 47 seconds left to win it and this is what happened to Al Del Greco right in the middle of the upright two inches two inches if it goes two inches to the inside that ball may have bounced through he might get another chance well if Houston wins this toss I would bet your mortgage that he will get another chance that's elicited referee Stan Kenton [Music] this call you heard the Oilers response they'll have it first when we come back first team to score will win it and at 23 23 the Oilers will have the first chance and that three minute break goes by 20 seconds there's Tony French we talked about some ghosts and some jinxes well this was one of the all-time great kickers for the Houston Oilers number 16 and he's telling the guy sitting next to him exactly what he would have done played with Tony a couple years in San Diego and he had a real refreshing attitude towards professional football here in America he says I kick the ball i pick up my check [Laughter] [Music] Willis salty get up at Coleman back deke for Houston the Oilers find themselves in their second straight overtime game and their record and overtime is not very good they've had all kinds of trouble winning overtime football games in overtime take it you know about the 23 we understand mark rippen's thrown six touchdown passes in that game that's one shy of the record the Saints with their ninth win Cleveland and Philadelphia border they have a ball game as the Eagles come back from a big deficit and another overtime going on in Cincinnati a lot more points being scored in the old National Football League lately huh this is the day I guess huh bet Green Bay gave Buffalo a good one until the end Indy wins their first - Eric Dickerson those are the other games just getting underway our game far from through or one play and it could be through you know in overtime 23 [Music] wide open is drew Hill and he's got ten yards are very close to it on the far side and Warren Moon is thrown for 356 yards and drew Hills caught seven of those passes today and again the Oilers with a huge success on the first down play they're averaging over eight and a half yards per first down play [Music] there's a man responsible Kevin Kevin Gilbride second down at less than a yard for the Oilers we have almost 500 yards of offense today he'll in motion Lorenzo white for the first time and they made the tackle but white got about three [Applause] Lorenzo white has played the majority in fact the entirety of the second half of now into overtime Allen Pinkett did most of the groundwork for the Oilers in the first half and it seems like the Cowboys have Bend on defense this entire ballgame a lot of long drives for Warren Moon and company the football just outside the 37 of the Oilers that is in the fifth quarter if you will were in overtime first down and the Spree the Lorenzo white that never developed and Ken Norton makes his second-straight tackle that's a big play by Ken Norton he read that screen right off the bat and he came up and wrapped up Lorenzo white this is a type of time of game when you start to see a lot of missed tackles but Norton one of the better tacklers in the open field he beats Dawson and gets in on Lorenzo white [Music] this is Dave Wannstedt right there was earning his money today we have had some big-time collisions on this football field for them Houston's at the ball twice's law still there tied at 23 with a cowboy we'll go down Rostow Maryland chased him down from behind you know that will be Russell's first NFL sack and it took till overtime in his first start to get it a number one draft choice in the NFL well he's right over the nose he's fighting off a double team of Dawson and Matthews again it's a coverage sack for the Cowboys moon had about five seconds to find somebody but the secondary did a good job allowing Russell to get his first NFL sack we talked about how good Houston is with versions here's a big one third and 12 [Applause] in motion or a moon with time running out of time finally got rid of it but it's short of the first down Jefferies with another catch at the 45 in their 2 yards or more shy of the first down marker and here comes the punting unit for the Oilers you're just joining us they've had two punts blocked today by the Cowboys oh and this is shrill nervous time for everybody here this huge crowd in the Astrodome you know Montgomery so you can catch it and kick it two blocks in the first quarter his first two punts the bounce past the first two Wohlers and gets it out to the 24 yard line will indeed have a chance sometimes you never get your hands on the football in overtime but they will have it with 11 12 left in the overtime period at Troy Aikman will bring out the Dallas office well the Oilers offense they've controlled the ball two-to-one today against the Cowboys but still that cowboy defense has done a heck of a job of preventing Warren Moon and those receivers from hitting any bombs they've really hung in there all day long and now they've turned it over to Troy Aikman to win it one touchdown pass came with 245 to play to Michael Irvin to tie this thing up at 23 it was in and out of the hands of the rookie Alan Harper first Dishman was over there there's the overtime records we told you in Houston for nine and you see what Dallas has done well then we got to start talking about Ken Willis Brad because we mentioned earlier he has a career-long of 54 yards and he hit in the first game against Cleveland this year [Applause] he is the cowboy kicker Eggman's got to get about 40 yards to get him within 54 yards right now the cowboy is worried about the 10 yards second and ten Dallas from the 24 if come Sean Jones again apron got rid of it and Novacek made a tough catch to the 29 but it still will be third at five this is a great thing about this system that Norv Turner is brought to the Cowboys as they've always got a chance this system spreads the ball out to all five receivers and when you've got a guy a pivot man like Novacek very similar to the situation I had in San Diego with Winslow everything kind of just revolves around that guy that makes the catch over the middle Novacek fourth catch of the day third and five Dallas Novacek again and a first down for the Cowboys across the 40 Marcus Robertson made the tackle we talked to Jay Novacek and said you seem to have something special with Troy Aikman he says well every time I turn around I wonder if the balls on its way and it's usually hitting me in the hands about right now well it has to be because it's a timing system hey Ahmed goes back five steps a little hitch step and now Novacek is in the clear and Troy Aikman gives him a perfect pass Novacek with two key catches in this drive and five 475 yards on the day first out cowboy [Applause] Emmitt Smith he's been bottled up all day got what he could about three yards and then Al Smith ran him out of bounds well this is what Emmet can do extremely well he'll bounce up into the hole see it be collapsed and then get to the outside and pick up extra yardage good job by two and a with the reach block and now Emmet follows his fullback Daryl Johnson to the outside picks up about four yards and now Dan the Cowboys are only about 20 yards away from giving their kicker a chance we've got nine and a half minutes left in the overtime period tied at 23 at the Astrodome second and almost 7:00 through Dallas then completes it to Roberts his other tight end that's his second catch of the day and it's good for a first down the offensive line has given Troy a lot of time and now Roberts the other tight end will work the crossing route here this is Novacek he goes down and across and all the coverage goes to Jay and that opens up Roberts man-to-man against Lathan where actually that's Johnny Meade's number 91 a lot of headaches this offense will present to a defense first and 10 cowboy at the Houston oiler 48 hey Quinn completes it again inside the 40 and very close to another first down is Harper [Music] can Willis the Dallas Cowboy kicker [Applause] now boys have another first down Willis has only missed three times this year actually five times he's perfect today three four three he liked he liked to get it down to another 1020 yard though this is really stretching it the numbers on first intent Cowboys Julie eight blitz Emmitt Smith into the secondary to the 30 he got almost nine oilers defense gamble a little bit there and Emmitt Smith made him pay well it's a great call by the offensive coordinator north turner anticipating that the oiler defense at this point has to make a play there's noir of right here and he can see that the only way that Houston can stop Dallas is to put'em blitz who try to create a fumble or dropped for a loss the draw play to Emmitt Smith gained nine yards great call ninth play of the drive and Dallas doing everything right so far on this Drive and the full-back Johnston I don't think so needed a very long yard and the Oilers defense there to meet him the clock in the corner under seven minutes in the overtime session remaining 23 23 the Cowboys in the oiler got to give a lot of credit to that offensive line of the Cowboys remember Nate Newton hurt his knee earlier in the second half and the rookie Eric Williams has done a super job at right tackle filling in form going against the Oilers best pass rusher William fuller Del Greco missed a 41-yard field goal with less than a minute in regulation and now at overtime Willis apparently is going to get a chance third down for the Cowboys play fake Aikman incomplete intended for Novacek we got a flag though and a penalty marker in the secondary somebody grabbed Novacek from behind it's going to be against Houston Jim Eddie says no it can't be what it is when the cowboy fans here in the dome love it [Applause] calling five on the defense first William fuller the defensive end apparently got a piece of somebody and you wonder if they'll Greco's wondering if that job in Birmingham is still open [Applause] was gonna go to work for a packaging firm in Alabama he could have packaged a win for the Oilers if he wouldn't have hit the upright and now Dallas trying to work their way down for a fuel wall attempt to win it we will draw out a Smith Emmitt Smith outside he lost the ball and Houston's got it [Applause] well Emmitt Smith just does not lose fumbles this is the first one in a million years ball popped loose by Poole Bo Orlando Bubba McDowell with the recovery and what a huge play for the Oilers as Emmitt Smith is taking this ball down inside the 20 ball knocked loose by Lathan and Joe Orlando and McDowell gets a huge turnover Emmitt Smith has not lost a fumble the last 200 and I believe 80 times and he's handled the ball is either a receiver or a rusher he lost the handle on one last week but a teammate recovered but in talking to Jim Eddie about Emmitt Smith he says the one constant thing about Smith is he carries the ball in his left hand regardless of the running play that time the ball was on in his left hand to the inside where the defenders were and two of them knocked it away who would know if he holds it in his right hand the outside hand if he wouldn't bump 281 handles if you will as a receiver or rusher without the opposition to be able to scrape up a loose one and there it is but he fumbled twice against the Cardinals one one out of bounds and Michael Irvin recovered the other but here the balls in his left hand watched Lathan with his left hand bend his arm back Bo Orlando comes in with the pop and the ball is loose [Music] are they happy down here from the bottom of the file the Oilers have it back we've got 608 left in the overtime period Houston from its own 14 [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] maybe the 21 Del Rio and Tony Tolbert combined on the tackle that would be a chance now for Del Greco hopefully he's thinking to put those goat horns away and get that hero's mantel out remember he has already hit a career-long today in his first game in many many months cut by the Cardinals earlier this year second and four that's for Houston their best put in the season more in trouble that open man Curtis Duncan [Applause] first down Houston we talked about how defensive linemen will jump and try to block passes and yet they'll stop there you see Maryland go up in the air he loses his footing and goes down and that allows moon to get outside and find an open receiver [Music] 400 yard plus day against the Jets earlier this season he's got 370 today first intended to the five books remaining of the old at 23 Lorenzo white again continues to get him about six yards Dan there are a lot of cowboys gonna sleep real well defect on that defensive side of the ball I think you and I are going to sleep jack party hoping that it can't happen twice in two weeks a loss last week to the Redskins in OT Jeff built about out of gas defensive players should be they've been out there the majority of the game for Houston [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] first down Houston [Applause] the art pathway [Applause] minutes [Applause] if you're just joining us the Cowboys special team locked to puts recovered another putt on a muff and turned him into points you now Warren mood with 388 yards trying to take it down the field against a tired Dallas defense [Applause] I was given a motion man goes complete to the 37 yard line [Applause] they need to be through he'll shaken up after the catch well he'll is the inside receiver here and again the Cowboys in a soft zone brown a little bit late from the outside Williams a little bit late from the inside but these guys are getting worn out there's just not any pressure on Warren Moon the golf coming up after this ball game if it ever ends it's got it in pretty soon we've got only 302 left in the overtime session Nana ko Sint Tell championship final round coverage next on CBS Sports what a game we've had with Dan Fouts I'm Brad Nessler at the Astrodome where the Oilers are closing in to give their kicker a chance to win this game it'll over time [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the Dallas 37 war moves in his last 10 passes he's in his last 11 passes [Applause] Holman knocked out by Norton and the clock beacons becomes a factor now but the Oilers have two timeouts there are a lot men in overtime but at the 26 25 yard line here we've got about a 42 43 yarder for del Greco which is just about the distance that he had last attempt when he hit the upright [Applause] two coaches almost worn out first down come again but they continue to throw over the middle the Lorenzo white and Jack Del Rio right there to meet him again a couple of about three and we talked about the critics of this run-and-shoot offense and how when they get down inside the five yard line goal line situations how much difficulty they have in scoring but you've got to give a lot of credit to this system for its ability to move the ball in a big hurry moon has hit 12 in a row did you sense right offensive line doing a super job they're a little worn out as well Munchak playing with a bad knee mags has got two bad elbows Dawson has got the flu just a heck of a game all the way around we've had everything including two two-minute warnings one of the best in the business dejected on the sidelines because he gave the ball up a few minutes ago well it's Lamar Lathan 57 and then Bubba McDowell will fall on this one after beau Orlando helps out Lathan McDowell with his third fumble recovery of the year and none will be bigger than that one probably for his entire career after Alex miss fumble the Oilers took over at their own 14 right now to the dallas 22 with two minutes left in overtime [Applause] so far and its second and seven for the Oilers [Music] [Applause] today [Applause] catch by Ernest givins at the 15-yard line great catch and a great throw by moon moon had a quarterback on a blitz believe it's Robert Williams 23 right in his face the ball is low but watch this grab fingers underneath ball didn't even come close to hitting the dirt boy what a great kid you bet that up first down at the 15-yard line remember the Oilers lost last week to the Redskins in OT they're going to run this ball to the left put it right in front of the uprights and put dough Greco in the game to win this [Music] now cuts back warren moon trying to throw a block lorenzo whites inside the five [Applause] we've talked about the fatigue factor the Cowboys and that's what hurts them here the reversal of the field by Lorenzo white and the Cowboys just don't have anything left to pursue him [Applause] not exactly how Kevin Gilbride would draw it up but he's got to love the results Houston with a timeout they have them all at the Dallas 3 that's how much time's left in overtime oh you're looking at Kevin Gilbride there with the headset on next to Jack party and as Warren moon comes over you see in one happy coordinator and one real confident one because of the guy that's got the trigger and that's Warren Moon he knows that he can tell Warren just about anything Warren has seen it Warren has experienced it and the play that will be called Warren will take care of the ball and make sure it's executed properly I've executed to the tune of five hundred and eighty five yards of offense today and you're almost wondering if they want take one more shot that they may not trust their field goal kicker whoever he may be back to the Euler huddle in his first and goal Houston at the Dallas three art line they like the double cut to the inside receivers they've thrown it about three times today in this situation Lorenzo white has a four yard touch to his credit today he's the single setback [Applause] and a ball is loose back though almost missed the handoff oh brother he lost his hat but he got the most important thing and that's the ball almost a Miss handoff by moon and wife watches moon comes out Paul is a little bit high and last week against the Redskins Lorenzo fumbled on a very similar type of play ball has handed off to hi Lorenzo is just running away from moon and he takes a shot right in the forehead after his helmet is gone [Applause] but I tell you what that would have hurt a whole heck of a lot more if he didn't recover that fumble al del Greco countless chances is yards at his blessings he missed a 41 yarder earlier that would have wanted for Houston or at least to put them in front by three in the waning moments of regulation he's back on the field now this is the longest football game for the Oilers since 1979 and Tony Frischer you talked about earlier ended that one and we got to remind people that about seven eight nine hours ago when we started this thing the Cowboys blocked two putts in a row so they obviously have some type something up their sleeve now a Bassano has the entire field goal blocking team over on the sidelines and they're mapping their strategy and now the Cowboys have taken a timeout 32 seconds to go in OT [Music] he looks on his kicker try not to look at anything except the path where the snap the hold and his kick will be the Oilers have never beaten Dallas here in the Astrodome they have gone to 32 seconds remaining in overtime to try to do it now they go to expansion the National well they gotta find a way to capture this excitement by having these type of situations she's natural rivalry they every year a 23 yard field goal attempt by al del Greco he told us before the game I thought this week I was going to have to find a real job he's got one now [Applause] [Music] a perfect snap by Bruce Matthews perfect hold by Montgomery and El Greco sends everybody home happy never a doubt from 23 right through the middle [Music] he hid from 52 we hid from 19 he hid from 22 and he says that 23 otter will do just fine [Music] the Oilers win it in overtime what a game we've had that's going to do
