we got underway yesterday play four and a half innings and then this happened I tell you two and a half hour delay finally the game most fall will start afresh tonight the Braves facing the kaisers in Game one it's Pascua Perez who spent half the season in the minor leagues on the mound for Atlanta against veteran right-hander Bob Forsch for st. Louis [Music] our stadium sold-out they'll have 51,000 most of the people were here yesterday all you needed tonight was a rain check game number one if you looked around the artificial surface the Cardinals first postseason competition since 1968 the best-of-five National League Championship Series after an aborted start getting underway this evening in Missouri hello again everyone I'm Al Michaels and when we last left you yesterday one out bottom of the fifth inning the Atlanta Braves are on top by a score of one to nothing it started to rain till they Williams the plate umpire call time at that point a little bit of controversy about it but I really think much ado about nothing some people felt he could have waited perhaps they would have gotten two more outs that would have made it an official game but I'll tell you one thing Chuck Feeney it was in his hands whether to call the game or not he probably would have waited until four o'clock in the morning to call that one if you're wondering what the weather was like here last night it finally did stop raining at about midnight has made it easier just to call the game and as far as the Atlanta Braves are concerned no controversy as far as they are concerned to a man I think it's best summed up by Chris Chambliss the veteran first baseman the veteran of the New York Yankees who said we're not looking for any cheaper five inning victories so tonight we should have no trouble going nine because the weather is perfect it was a gorgeous day in st. Louis temperature right now is 68 degrees and because of the rain out we have Game one tonight game two will be here and not in Atlanta tomorrow night Game three at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium on Saturday night a fourth game if necessary on Sunday night and a fifth game if necessary to determine at all than the National League would be held at Atlanta on Monday afternoon of course as far as the rainout is concerned the managers have to think about juggling their rotations it was Negro against Andujar yesterday and on that subject Howard Cosell talked with Atlanta manager Joe Torre I think you should tell the public here and now about you talk just now in the clubhouse with Phil Niekro you almost died what starting him tonight he wanted to start didn't me well I'd say I had Bob Gibson talk to him about that if he said his eyes really popped up real big and see what had happened there it's not really the arm as much as it is the hand he followed the but he got jammed gets the on an end of our pitch and got a little puffiness and his thumb but we just feel safer to wait till tomorrow to start Phil cuz we want to make sure his first outings gonna be a good one so Phil will start tomorrow one day's rest in the wake of yesterday's fallen a third inning right he threw 60 something touches but the way he's been pitching I'm sure that as we said before the Adrenaline's flowing and he's ready is there a rotation in you over Billy Williams the plate umpire his decision to stop playing when two more outs would have given you a victory well Howard I don't believe would have given us a victory I'm sure we would have finished that game one way or the other you know if it had been you know after the fifth was completed then we would have we would have sat on it and waited and I just think Billy was following instructions on any kind of rain to keep it from being the kind of fiasco was a few years ago to play in the rain that he just did it to protect everybody involved but I have no animosity toward Billy's just doing a job I'll materially as your club been hurt by the Fed yet a complete yesterday's game and how can you be sure that Negro will be able to pitch tomorrow with just one day's rest Howard I have been true all year except that we're gonna win and it's just another obstacle climb and jump over and it's just been that kind of year we think if anything was gonna happen that was gonna be worried it was gonna happen just back in the face Thursday and and do very well so we're pretty confident we're not gonna be hurt by well there are any mistakes made by the opposition yesterday I have in mind Lonnie Smith on the bases and Lonnie Smith playing a long shortstop against Claudell Washington in the first inning I thought they held Claudell real cheap yet the ball when it was hit at that boy is just right at and all of a sudden I realized it was over his head kordell's pretty strong and he's hit some home run to the opposite field for us but you know it of course it went for Norris we were able to execute and get the run home thank the Chambliss but aside from that I thought the game was played clean even though it wasn't very long yes or no your faith and Perez is still hot well Pasquale felt that the Negro had won yesterday does trust me it'll be two and I'll going back to Atlanta so I have a great deal of faith in Fez well good luck to you Joe thank you Eric so ready for a game one Busch Stadium in st. Louis and in just a moment Howard Cosell will be joined by Dodger manager Tommy Lasorda as the to compare the Braves and the Cardinals Mayton hello again everyone a privilege to have with us sporting a new backwards swirl hairdo Tom Lasorda the apollyon voluble manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers as our expert for this National League Championship Series and we want to do exactly what we did yesterday primetime different audience no fear of repetition tell me quickly your general comparison of the Duke team well how are these clubs are very different there are one Club Atlanta they depend upon power they have four guys they could hit the ball out of the ballpark at any given time and they also have what I think is an outstanding bullpen Joe Torre when a game is closed after the fifth inning he will go strictly with a two-man bullpen and Steve Bedrosian and Jean Garber if he's one run behind he'll try to get Garber Garber in after they get ahead all right Tommy let's take it now man firm and positioned by permission position and let's see whom you give the edge to we begin at first base that means Chris Chambliss and Keith Hernandez well Chambliss is a veteran he's been in these games before he's got good power Keith our nannies to me is a great all-around ballplayer I have to give the edge to Keith Hernandez alright we go on to second base now that means Glenn Hubbard they call him the gamer and Tommy Herr these two players are almost alike hers has a little bit more speed Robert has a little bit more punch I'm going to give an even on that second base position over the shortstop Rafael ramier playing very well in the late going and Ozzie Smith well Rafael Rafael Ramirez is doing very well but he's no I he Smith Ozzie Smith to me is one of the finest fielding shortstop I have ever seen and if they had enough balls to him you're gonna see this guy make plays that are unbelievable the choice goes Davey Smith over the third-base with Bob Bonner coming back from an injury will detail that later in the show and Ken Oberkfell Ken Oberkfell is a good contact hitter if the ball all field he is a good fielder Horner is coming off an injury I don't know how much it's gonna affect him he can hit the ball ball ball out of the ballpark at any given time I'm gonna have to go with the power and my choice is Bob Horner moving out to left field you've got versatile Jerry roister offense minded Lonnie Smith Jerry Rice is a good ball player he's gonna do a lot of things for the brave Lonnie Smith to me is one of the finest offensive players in all of baseball Mike choices Lonnie Smith to centerfield and Slugger Dale Murphy against Willie McGee the speedster Willie McGee is a bright young ballplayer he's going to be sensational Dale Murphy is having a sensational year he has all of the earmarks of an MVP and I pasted up this guy some ballplayer Dale Murphy my choice and now the right-field way you've got four Atlanta well Claudell Washington who's come so strongly and the powerful George Hendrick for st. Louis well Claudel Russian has been a big help to the brave George Henrique along with Murphy has to be a choice for the MVP of the National League my selection George Hendrick of the Cardinals finally in the catching position Bruce Benedict Atlanta Darrell Porter st. Louis defensively Bruce Benedict is the best he can do it all he can catch he can throw he's a good caller of signal on the other hand Darryl Porter doesn't have a good arm he's a below average catcher but he can hit the ball out of the ballpark and the name of the game is offense I'm going to go with Darryl Porter for the simple reason he can hit the ball out of the park so position by position Tom Lasorda gives the edge to the Cardinal spot the pitcher first of all what that Negro decision tonight well Negro loved the pitch he's a tremendous competitor he wanted the ball again that tell you something that wouldn't have been a bad selection he can go out there and do it for you he's that type of pitcher what about Perez whom the fans know so little about really Perez was acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates in the mcwilliams deal and he's the kind of guy he can go out there he's got a good fastball and he throws a good hard slider he'll go for six innings and if the game is closed they'll go to the bullpen to help him you've already mentioned Bedrosian and gaba the bullpen but one final quick word about them well there are two outstanding relief pitchers but rosin throws hard he can do it for two or three innings then he brings in Garber who was tough with his off-speed stuff he throws a great change of pace on the other hand you have the st. Louis Cardinals I think they have the best relief pitcher in baseball and sooner and I think that's going to make the difference the bullpen is going to make the difference in this playoff final word about posh the starter porch is a good pitcher he's very very courageous on the mound he'll go after you but you got to watch him he's a good hitter he can swing that bat they better throw him a lot of curveballs Lozada will tell it to you like it is all evening long be assured of that we'll have a look at those starting pitches when we come back in a moment here at Pascua Perez ready to start the playoffs a man who began a year at Portland also pitched at Richmond and he is summed up by former Cardinal great and current at the Lana pitching coach Bob Gibson his comments on the young right-hander well I yesterday I was talking with some reporters and they said well if they get by Negro that that possibly the Cardinals will have a pretty good chance and I said well they're gonna have their hands full with Perez the kids got great stuff he's a he's a good pitcher he's uh he's a lot older on the mound and he is chronologically and I just spent said he's gonna give him a lot of trouble and he'll be opposed by veteran right-hander Bob Forsch force in his ninth season with the Cardinals 15 and 9 a 3.4 atra and earlier Howard Cosell talked with Whitey Herzog his manager dr. eyes pause for me Bob Forsch is a control pitcher he's got all the pitches fastball slider changeup he knows what he's doing out there he mixes in a little knuckleball now and then he doesn't strike many people out he gives up probably a better than a hit for inning overall but the thing does not walk people he makes the people earn what he gives up in this ballpark that's a pretty good way to pitch especially when we can catch the ball quite a contrast as far as the matchup is concerned the youngster Perez and the veteran four should we'll be right back for Game one of a National League Championship Series between the Atlanta Braves and the st. Louis Cardinals and for this ABC News brief and a word from our local station Game one of the 1982 National League Championship Series from Busch Stadium in st. Louis and Peter Palmer and his wife singer actress Anika Farrell Farrell [Music] [Music] [Music] Oh ah so ready for team one now the Atlanta Braves the st. Louis Cardinals will get the National League Championship Series underway right after this when the game's on the line a manager wants to stop her at the bullpen a relief pitcher who shuts the door on enemy bats Major League Baseball salutes the Cardinals Bruce Souter and Kansas City's Dan Quisenberry has the game is top reliever Quisenberry one relief land honors in the American League for the second time in three years while suitors found relief in the National League for the second year in the row congratulations to these two top relievers the preceding message was furnished by Major League Baseball then in the 1982 nationally grow AIDS relief Man of the Year award is Mel Goods senior vice president of warner-lambert maker of Rolaids roulade never forgets what relief means to a team and to what the Rawlings so we're very proud to recognize the National League's top really picker with this award this year we always felt relief root Souter Thank You Mel and Thank You roulade I really like the way you spell relief and I love the way you spell relief Man of the Year I noticed at the office day Bush jr. the president and chief executive officer of the st. Louis Cardinals he's been the president of the team since February of 1953 throwing out the first ball the ceremonial first pitch we were rained Stadium name of course where the Bush family Bush Memorial Stadium downtown st. Louis Porter on the receiving end try those he's watched them through seconds in Whitey Herzog the man he hired a couple of years back after Herzog has been fired at Kansas City and whitey has brought the team into the championship playoffs in two years an earlier Howard visited with whitey on a broad basis you came in here general manager and managed and yet Todd this ballclub apart near rebuilt what was your thinking when you did that ballclub that was playing in a big ballpark Howard had a lot of good hitters I was very fortunate that I could deal from strength we had two good catches and Ted Simmons and Kennedy we had two good first baseman than Bull Durham and Keith Hernandez therefore I had a couple good jump ball players that I could deal away and get the people I wanted I knew that Bull Durham was gonna be a superstar he's a great player right now but we had to have the big relief pitcher and I thought Bruce Souter was the best so we we did that deal Kennedy was very much and won five to Paul pubs San Diego had fingers I didn't know whether I could get cooter I got him on a Monday fortunately I got cooter on Tuesday and that's why he went and he's had a great year there but the thing that was the key to the whole opting was being able to sign the reporters of creation that give us the depth we needed but we could do a few things and that said everything in motion and I think what people have to look at on any ballclub it's not who you traded away or what you did the end result is where you were and where you are now and I think it's been proven last two years we've got the best record finish maybe part of that reason their defenses we look at them individually Keith Hernandez is at first base visiting there with coach Sonny Jackson of the Braves the second baseman is Tommy Herr has his finger wrapped that's been bothering of these at numerous injuries this season but he's a gutty second baseman Ivy Smith also hampered somewhat by a thigh muscle and slip is playing at about 90% and over a third is the man who is the converted second baseman when they put her at second they moved Kenny Oberkfell over to third and that's worked out very well in the outfield the man that called skates at least we called a man in Philadelphia slips and slides a lot Lonnie Smith in center is the rookie he started a season in triple-a at Louisville and has made a big splash here offensively and defensively Willie McGee and around and right the man they rely on for power led the club and home runs with 19 George Hendrick 5 for 15 don't worry Damon ydra anything [Music] at a reputation of giving up runs early in the ballgame so you're going to have to get him early if you're going to get him he's a tough pitcher he's a good competitor Claudell Washington to lead things off he started yesterday's game with a double grounded to the right side and easy play at the family this one has a more auspicious beginning for the Cardinals then did yesterday's game Washington with a double yesterday was fun at the 3rd and came in to score on Chambliss a single that was the only run 330 down the lines 382 the alleys 414 to straightaway center a very very difficult to hit a home run here I'll Tommy I'll be the first to tell you that posh rally strikes out it is his average strikeouts per game little over 2 men per game as you look at tonight's umpires Billy Williams back at home play tangled wendelstedt Don will tell you about Harry later bruce fremming dutch rennet and Paul Runge but the point is that Porsche has super control keeps the ball in play right Tom absolutely here's Rafael Ramirez making low for ball one Ramirez at 278 this year that's much more than they had expected go back to lackeys in his first year with the club he had 218 they also led the league in errors with 38 this guy's a good fastball hitter he'll jump off a close feet to get to the fastball his weakness is breaking balls and he got to keep the ball down on in the aborted game yesterday Ramirez sacrifice and grounded out but all of yesterday's - walked away join one account the lana is a gutsy team a great feel of self-belief no wasted time in complaining over what happened yesterday and that's a tribute to Joe char hit in the air to centerfield McGee dressing over Ramirez is gone and Dale Murphy is the batter Murphy came up yesterday with Washington a third one out and hit a chopper back to the pitcher gale the season tied with Hal Oliver for the National League lead and runs batted in with a hundred nine they were talking about Murphy in terms of winning the MVP award but he cooled off at the end Bob Forsch at home 11 into this season very tough in his part wanna know the gown Murphy is some kind of ballplayer he's outstanding defensively and offensively and this guy will steal some bases on you he can hit the ball out of any ballpark that's the deceiving thing about Murphy a fellow who drives in that many runs it's that many homers you figured he's a big lumbering Slugger who maybe filled three or four bases that wasn't the case with Murphy that season the other thing is he doesn't know his own power yet still a kid 14 or 15 of his home runs have been to the opposite field two balls one strike the god but our justat very true 12 homers to left this season be at nine of them to Center and 15 to right spacing morale do it on the calves i way that black armband that all the cardinals are wearing in the memory of nboyer who died about a month ago the longtime Cardinals third baseman former manager [Music] this team lives with the memory of Kenny Boyer I can't speak uh Delin personally about Ken it was like into me from the day came up as a rookie in 55 his performance in the all-star game in 56 at Griffith Stadium he hovers in everyone's mind here and inspiration the Atlanta Braves all by that man made the cover of Time magazine this year everybody knows of now ed Turner TV mogul world-class jasmine sold all his shots [Music] the first answer 1/2 it said landed nothing and the Cardinals coming off [Music] first base the infield turning over more double plays than any team in the league Glenn Hubbard at second base the shortstop the erratic one but he'll make some great plays for you Rafael Ramirez and around the third despite the hyper-extended elbow he was in the lineup yesterday and again tonight Bob corner in the I fielded the versatile utility man Gary Royce durable in center Dale Murphy and around and right is Atlanta's leadoff hitter Claudell Washington Bruce Benedict annuities back of the plate for Atlanta and on the mound husk Lau Perez with Pittsburgh last year at Portland in the Pacific Coast League earlier this season 17 walks in 79 he gets the ball over his good stuff they traded them as Tommy mentioned during the pregame show for Larry McWilliams who went to Pittsburgh and he came on with a rush at the end and earned the start tonight but Dominican has a good arm he's got a good fastball he throws the hard slider they'll go after you real hard for five or six innings and then they said earlier that the game was close they'll take him out and go to the bullpen he goes to work on Tommy Herr in Oberkfell in Lonnie Smith in the bottom of the first inning team one no score if there ever was a ballclub put together for tailor-made for a ballpark it's this Cardinal ballclub they really capitalized on the field they hit run they hit the ball in all fields it all shot hit the ball out of the ballpark very rarely do they hit at the double play and believe me you'll feel scattering all over those bases the team built for the parks and playing very well here and also very well on that's right the Cardinals 11 over 500 year 11 over away way more than one strike an index now to the stability of this team it's basic strengths as you look at that graphic what a turnabout that's why the Braves have such confidence in him defense and speed will give you that kind of balanced hit in the air to left-center field boy stur moving back injury underneath it for the cat one down and Ken Oberkfell will be the batter at 113 12 Perez must've been a high ball pitcher because he's got nine pounds of jewelry around his neck write him down to get the fall down when he got a chance down me because he came in the MacWilliam straight I want you quickly to tell the story of how you called out and panis and said I want McWilliams not now but when you see a spot the strike in the count a little Jenny over Excel was very hot those finished the season load him up into the number-2 spot in the order one first in the cat nothing into over 12 17 for his last 31 during the regular season what our faces at the bottom of the first inning no balls two strikes the count on Oberkfell whoa or Atlanta last week in fact it was the night they moved into first place they were playing the Giants the Dodgers were losing to Cincinnati Atlanta had built up a big early lead and Perez came out of the bullpen of Candlestick in the third inning disciple the giant can move Atlanta in the first place D'Alessio again could replay here for Royster joaquin andujar yesterday starter you know people talk about pressure on a young pitcher like Perez especially with the Cardinals having six left-handers in the panning order but statistics well very much used in baseball can be deceiving he pitches better against lefties this year than against righties yell lefties to a 241 batting average Smith grounds at the third corner backs up on it throws and gets it so both teams go out in order in the first we'll go to the second at Foot Stadium Atlanta nothing st. Louis nothing in game Bob course six for 215 32 years old at a Sacramento powered spoke with him earlier now whitey characterized as you as a complete pitch ability to move the ball around the plate throw a variety of pitches know the hit is prey upon their respective weaknesses if you are at the complete picture that he says when did you reach that status in your mind well I think really it's within the last couple years that I've got where I the velocity isn't quite there that used to be but nonetheless the movement is in I feel proud of myself that I don't walk a lot of batters I think it's important to keep the ball in play and get your defense a good idea of how you're gonna pitch hitters and and go right after them when you need to make a pitch you just got to go try to do it working here on fresh gamblers leading off in the top of the second inning missing with the first two two balls no strikes to count second inning no score at 70 during the regular season 20 homers 86 RBIs Tommy describe how the Dodgers pitch to Chambliss well we tried to throw him high fastball he likes the ball down and out over the plate they try to keep the ball up and then on him he has that slight uppercut swing so if you get the ball up and then on him all they'll do is hit fly balls and pop the ball up he drove in the only run in yesterday's aborted game sharp grounder off the glove of a Bobby Smith this fella makes the 3 6 3 double play as good as any right-hander I've seen since Gil Hodges right-handed first baseman north left hand the first place he goes the other way and Luke's a foul into the Atlanta bullpen tough consistent ballplayers Tommy somehow living in New York watching the Yankees through the years something left that Yankee ballclub when Chambliss and white departed well he's a good competitor and he's a good man to have on a ballclub tremendous fella course with a 2 2 pitch to Chambliss reaches a crown to down to overfill and the first four Braves have gone down one out second inning well football coordinator NFL Jim Hanna anything's happening in football these days the issues too complex to even begin to state here a 5:30 p.m. federal court decision right here in st. Louis today horner the batter taking inside purple all want to go course just sent a message he sent a telegram he said get back off the plate honor it belongs to me the reminder tomorrow California Milwaukee and the angels can wrap it up with a win and then game two in the National League from here around the Detroit look at how the body fit was playing the slow Horner scoot down on new har also sent a message in the Hornby yesterday Horner was grazed by a pic on the well that's where they're gonna try to pitch him they want to keep the ball in tight on him so he can't get that extension do down row that's one of the most remarkable men in American sport he's 43 years of age only one man here older Jim cotton that by very little still one of the great performers in baseball he totally a model great goes to Flatbush Duke Snider today let me pitch every day against their siege any minute he can do it horse missing here one ball no strikes the count Bob offering that last pitch at 92 miles an hour the ROI for fouling and the count one ball and one strike it'll be interesting if the California Angels win in the American League and the Cardinals win in the National League you could have a brother matchup in the World Series we his brother can pitchers for the angels Bob here with the Cardinals get richard Dawson Dempsey a family feud at first I see the defense they set up for Rory he generally gets the ball the other way very close to the second base and the center fielders playing straight away and the right filters over so they're gonna they're gonna pitch him hard stuff and he's gonna hit the ball to right field in most cases they don't want to throw him any soft stuff 1 & 2 the count see down bases empty right they're trying to go that way now holding Hubbard will be next tomorrow night Phil Niekro coming back these rest is to look at Hubbard the Cardinals will be going with a rookie will be John stuper on the mound in Game two that's good-looking get that stupor sorry tested lowing away Gary strikes out number 1 for 4 through has set down the first six and in the middle of the second inning it's the Braves nothing and the Cardinals nothing going to the bottom of the second inning in st. Louis Al Michaels with Howard Cosell Dodger manager Tommy Lasorda no score in Game one with the middle of the order Hernandez Kendrick and Porter facing Pascua Perez the right-hander and all of the Cardinals will phase only right-handers in the playoffs the Braves are the nine man no lefty won another count this guy is a manager's delight he can do it all both offensively and defensively he's got power hits the ball to all fields can run well he'll feel the bass for you and he can do it with the glove he was sputtering early on this year and enclosed shortly and lifted his average this one point shy of the 300 mark that he's grown accustomed to he only lost the 300 mark on his final at-bats this year which troubles him because he's been so consistent Perez is trying to keep the ball down on him he likes the ball up two balls one strike the count in the Cardinal dugout rich indie that's another remarkable man out defeated tuberculosis in his life fast manage of one of the great players Shane Dienst and Musil everlasting thought notes great buddies right now a coach we've had nothing but out this far on the ground mostly I fall on the ground I noted earlier that one hell left-hander's to that right-handers hit him the 307 this year so he's developed an effectiveness against those left hand what makes his ball effective against left-handers is the ball moved when it's down and he's got great light to it as graphically and brick at the plate to this rank George this season roundup at 282 led the club in homer's with nineteen 104 runs batted in despite missing 26 games he was early with an elbow injury one and one all of Famer Bob gifts you talk about a tough a have been very few like that man as we noted yesterday he's mellowed through the years when he was on that hill the thrills he was tough fielded by Ramirez who makes a nice play to get him he couldn't afford to short hop it plugged it on a bounce and gets him so five straight begun by Perez on the ground I like to Atami said in his opening analysis he said Perez you can look for five good six good innings four and then they'll come with Bedrosian and of course with gaba but with poor she said you've gotta get him early and Porsche has been working very far to play at least in the first doing he got a slowing down he likes to work fast he likes to get the ball and throats you got to step out once in a while Darryl Porter if the chopper to the right side hovered over the first three more grounders and both the truth have sat down the first six men they faith so at the end of - at Busch Stadium in game law in Atlanta nothing st. Louis nothing before you NCAA college football coming up on Saturday the Washington Huskies ranked number one again Jo camps California Golden Bears who back here won only two games all season under Roger theater and this year they're already bring in one plus the other regional game for you college football this Saturday I love choke cap he's a caracal remember when he got the job they said how can you coach usually he said if Cosell can coach 28 teams in the NFL I can third inning no score Glenn Hubbard to leave things often takes a strike in the count his old one bottom of the order Hubbard Benedict and in the picture Perez this is the kit they call the gamer Tommy can tell you why he's tough he loved to play and he's get to seem to get that big hit for them whenever they need it he's very very tough with the bat in his hand and of course he's without standing DoublePlay man lady he's not afraid on the end of the double play you can go after him but he doesn't give an inch nicknamed the mountain man more quickly add nothing into the Braves had only three home runs in this park this season in six games corner hit 2 that would figure tough park the Homer and the other was hit by Hubbard well the Atlanta team loved to play in Atlanta because of the power the launching pad that's right and the Cardinals love to play in this ballpark because of the turf when they hit that ball the outfield it takes off wanted to the couch you realize the braids at 95 home runs and their 81 games at home by far the most by any national league team in its own stadium strikeouts for Bob for they are successive he got Royster in the second and here he gets covered to drive to third but Tommy in their 81 games on the road Atlanta hit only 51 home runs to rank but sixth in the league and Road home runs that's imbalance well you get them out of that short Park and they become different hitters and that's the big thing about this ballpark right here it'll take away the power Ruth Benedicta that's going into mesh in the count is going one benedicto down playing on a full stomach today because we saw him at lunch yes we did it at 100 sorted place with Charlie judo's top of the house wasn't it great grounded to third no play and the game's first baserunner is Benedict over itself can handle it and it's scored as an error Kenny charging in besides the short hop the ball hitting off the heel of his glove and bounding away it could have waited a little bit longer with Benedict run and he could because of the fact that Benedict does not run real good in fact if Benedict got in a race with a pregnant woman he finished third I thought Los Angeles was dummies president hometown but he is the mayor of this city I'll tell you that they love me Hernandes ready to charge it and I'm moving back Network throws over there there's a very unusual defensive position by Hernandez he's not standing on the base he is out in front very rarely do you see a first basement in that position and he's charging the pictures that's right he does that al is because of the fact that he knows that Benedick cannot steal though he's up front getting ready to charge the ball he's he's going to try to take the fall off the bat when Perez buns Cardinals that time had both Hernandez charging along with Oberkfell is Smith moving over to cover second it's tough to funnel this Cardinal infield that's right the first effect you're going to see what the third baseman was and the first baseman they will take the ball right off the bat only one way you can overcome that have the guy run in but these are that or somehow be able to purchase by him no balls two strikes account no score in the third inning with one out have to be button again where and they intimidate you the first baseman and the third baseman charging like that getting real close friendly you'll foul a lot of them off how do you combat it when you are managing the Dodgers you beat st. Louis 7 out of 12 times so you the only way to do it when those infielders are charging like that you have to have to run in the bunt they cannot stop that just hope and pray that they don't pop it up what el Washington grounded out of the first any Ben I think at first base he'll not by Hernandez more conventionally now to down no score I think you're fine a little bit cheaper on Washington today I would have sex see him yesterday Joe Terry told me and you heard that let's look at that last pitch to me select the bottom fell out of it yep right off the table yo said they played claudel a little chiefly Walker's been fouling it away in the camo balls and two strikes now he's got him two strikes and no balls he's going to have a couple of shots at him on the inside part of the plate up high alright he can't give him anything good Darren where Lonnie Smith is you can see several steps further back than he was in the first inning yesterday and we'll watch for the pitch as Tommy predicted it was playing a long shortstop yesterday it's incredible by the way as good lateral movement on a fly ball but it stops there the catcher coming inside location right there he's giving the pitch away he's certainly gonna he's only gonna make every effort to get that ball inside to him is where you have to pitch mr. Washington Oh too bad corta will run out of oil Bob Forsch doesn't walk very money doesn't strike out very many always around a plate if Tommy said he won 20 games in 1977 then he won 11 games the next three years in a row in last year in the strike-shortened Souza then back up to 15 oven inside with that slider a piece of it and got a piece reporter go fly your Andris percent mr. Lasorda Porter was injured earlier this season broken fingers knocked them out of action at the same time Gene Tenace was hurt that's when they brought Glenn drummer up they do some capturing along with Sanchez one love maddening things excuse me about this game some is bloodied the nail at least they're working over it Sami will tell you exactly how to pitch every hitter and then you reach a clutch situation and somebody will somehow loop a ball it might be Rafael land estoy and it'll cost you a pennant don't bring that up please Hollis but you're an expert on such the freaks in the game of baseball that hit that lambda saw he got to beat us in the 10th inning the other day why three guys got a hernia diving forth elbow to thigh another one going inside with the fastball now and addicted Forex with two down and watch them and making them work you're on target my friend Darrell Porter note that any manager Joe Torre of course included observing the Porter as that right hand slightly bloodied the nail he had helped him pick on the right was order whether he hurts his nail or not the way to wait when the Braves played the past couple of weeks they became even more aggressive than they were through much of 1982 hitting and running a lot down the stretch especially on the coast and the three games that wrapped it up for the three series that drafted a form against the Giants Dodgers and Padre again now look he's moving outside he's saying Washington's getting a little bit of the ball inside let's show him show him one pitch out away he's looking inside now so they want to try to go away with the fifth - you can afford to waste one and he wastes one with a capital W want to do exactly what he did did you agree with that tactic job too far outside though now we'll come back inside again now we mentioned this that yesterday during the rain shortened game Washington won the hottest hitters in the league Ryder amber the runner goes and it's left in the center for a base hit Benedict around second and goes to third so they send Benedict back time silent single in centerfield took Cordell valves off several and picks up the first end of the game so runners at first and third with two down now going in in him then going out with Owen to back in again and a base hit to center he made a good pitch on he hit that ball right off the hand I was about to say you got to give credit to that hitter he hung in there he fought the pitcher and finally he got the hit well he's gonna put Rafael Ramirez on a breaking ball diet right now you can rest assure of that Ramirez flied to Center in the first inning no score third inning first run of the game been addicted to third Washington will run he can run he'll steal bases or she's got a trick throw to first base he's quick over there but he's very slow delivering the ball home Ladell with 33 feel diseases first rank in the Catalan walk I mentioned yesterday as you look at Claudell he's become an interesting case all over the place Oakland Texas Chicago the Met and finally he settled down there and despite all of the talk about how much he gets he seems a contented man no for the mockery of presumably being overpaid and he's become a solid ballplayer fair statement Thomas I'd have to agree with that Howard what for $700,000 year I'd be one hit one error leave two after two and a half no soy 31 Chris Chambliss Atlanta's first baseman third year with the Braves Howard spoke with him including the likes of Billy Moore and Bill Burton to opposites and temperament yeah you played for Joe Torre what is your reaction to Tory well he's really done a fine job with getting respect on this club I think the club is a young club and I think they needed somebody to look up to and Joe has been that he's been somebody who you just don't break rules against him you know he he can be mean when he wants to be and and of course he's compassionate when he needs to be awesome he's just been tremendous and he's been responsible for putting this thing together only interesting things about Terry is that in a sense he comes back home to the city and they love him and respect him here tell me well remembers the 71 series as we look at McGee we'll pick up in a moment now no score bottom of the third inning Willie McGee the rookie fouling it away and the count is gone a lot that was the year when he had 137 ribbies 230 hits 363 batting average MVP says he had the six happiest years of his life here in the grabbing what watching you over to play Oh reaching Hamlet McKean never looks at hillerich third that's the he faces if he wanted that's right he had a home run inside the park um he called it on the button the kid knows what he did here it is down into the corner he probably he definitely has a double to begin with probably a triple of Washington Stephen plays it perfectly now watch him come to third Hiller just wailing the goal why he's not looking watch killer he stopped the third never looked at Hiller and here's the tough count you can off times get here at for stadium compounded by the fact because of yesterday's rain that warning track is still very slick well the time for Dell gets it in the game is his third he could have scored easily it's in for a strike the only saving grace for Willie is that he's a third with nobody out he think used to come in anyway we'll see though hillo was going crazy again as you follow the ball and it took that hop skip and jump fast the right fielder Washington you know what he had done he's printed the plate with a cattle one wall in one strike we saw the same thing happen in Reverse last Sunday in Baltimore okay he got to be alive without he slipped hitting in this situation he's at Attica it likes the screen whitey will squeeze with him with nobody everything well possibly I don't know he says you have to be looking for it switch hitter 1:1 fit in there for a strike in the count is 1 & 2 Oh cannot kid run oh he's one of the few guys in baseball who get out of get out of bed turns the light off and gets into bed before the light goes off all right Thomas there's the one to fix to Smith and on his hands and solve off his foot wanting to the cow Ozzie Smith you know about him defensively offensively he provided the Cardinals with more than they expected can't be so good as the shortstop that if he hits to see he's still valuable to you he wound up hitting 248 and for most of the season he was up in the 260 sun somebody in town looking to stir something up said today that Ozzy wants to be traded well the only up for mozzie during the course of this series I've spoken to him about that it's nonsense 1 2 pitch fouled away but off you're right about when his arena well on a clear day [Music] Nakia third nobody out he's had a little trouble driving in runs in his last 12 ballgames as you can see he's had a real good year with the fat he'll hit the ball to left field most cases that's why they're trying to throw him hard stuff inside that several games down the stretch with a hematoma thigh injury outer thigh one perfect two balls two sides there's a better hitter from the right side than he is from the left and feel playing in as you can see with McGee they're gonna have to get a little closer maybe they get on the ground he's going to go anything hit on the ground with a 1/3 move it in South territory engaged caught that ball but he would have packed up don't question what it's thought well he was running in third but the ball out of horn is reef Ramirez also chasing his down two balls two strikes the count remains with McGee at third and nobody out of the bottom of the third inning huzi became a switch hitter did you ever convert a guy to switch hitting Johnny Depp who converted a few of them to switch hitter oh well we converted Stinson when he played will if he became a switch hitter we had Parker to with the switch hitter we had a lot of switch hitters Maury wills was converted say oh he's about to storm again Murphy their nature okay to sacrifice fly first flood in Game one one-nothing suite was with one out prevent the in bond for two that Reagan made welds the switch hitter at Spokane before you got there look if a died are happy the Cardinals if they get up on top are very tough and of course that goes down to the bullpen you think about Souter if you have the lead they're also the type of team as you can see if they don't score first they're in trouble because if they get three or four runs down they really don't have the kind of attack that can pick up a lot of runs in a hurry Oh what fetch the four shots down the Hubbard at second and Glenn turns into an out to God in the third inning Tommy Herr coming off or we'll wait allow pores to get back into the dugout take a little bit of extra time or one of six quick cities for the Cardinals those six are pictures but again as we stated it earlier Atlanta coming into the playoffs with an all right-handed staff all nine so you'll never see the cricketers in the series back from the right side Frank to her on one the same beans and whitey birds are chained DS manage this team longer than any man in history 20 opposing managers come to the ballpark is going for basis Kenny over it so we'll be Nevada with you down it would think yeah the thing to think through they say hey we have to be ahead of this ballclub going into the seventh inning because of the fact that they have suitor down there once she gets either in there with a one or two run lead generally we compact the bat that's all over [Applause] [Music] I gotta look for her to run in this situation with two outs and overfilled the hidden Sampath holding her boy what nothing fried dolls in the bottom of the third inning [Laughter] [Applause] yt would probably like to have him take a shot at that whole maybe on one of two pitches with the runner on base and first baseman home boom on her had 19 seals áthisá rather damage or O'Meara we'll do it himself 615 and the inning is over but the Cardinals for the run through this and we'll go to the fourth of st. Louis leading Atlanta what did I think I've emerged from a shadow Reggie Jackson mr. October Fred live Don Baylor Tommy John and boots teeth and silence of lower back this is the power of California hungry for a sweeping game free tomorrow on ABC [Music] going to the fourth inning at Busch Memorial Stadium what a rain yesterday stop the bat midnight beautiful day today temperature up in the mid-70s right now we're in the mid 60s Dean one National League Championship Series Dale Murphy leads off in the fourth inning Cardinals ahead one to nothing if you're on the red first side this is what you'd like to see Murphy leading off a lot of innings Murphy grounded out in the first one ball one strike to go another thing I'd like to say is that I'd like to commend both managers both of them have done a tremendous job this year bringing their team number one so it's good to be congratulate on the wonderful job they've done Dorian his first year after no success with a met the different walk down south for into the right-field corner goes Hendrick and fouls out and makes the pass George good defensive right fielders gauging it all the way know exactly how much room we had makes the catch in the corner for the out I think you have to give it you look at this again and that's the advantage of knowing your home ballpark so well look at that loping stride of Hendrick a man built in the manner of Dave Winfield with perhaps a similar stride excuse me but Chari faced every adversity during that apparent collapse when your club column caught him and he came back kept his composure one in one on bandwidth the Braves the remarkable start of course major league record 13 and all built up a giant advantage so that walked away in about three weeks they lost 19 of 21 went to the front again started to fade again three back with ten to go and want it down the stretch five of seven on the west coast good one that's Audrey Chambliss the lining is alive all the kill and the Dunbar border corner grounded out in the second inning two out bases empty game two here tomorrow night everything moves back a day as far as go to Atlanta for Game three on Saturday and one week from tonight new episode too close for comfort who show premiere it takes two beginning at 9:00 Eastern 8:00 Central Time inside the corner he sent him a message before and a little one there too Tom you've seen this kid Horner from the beginning when he first came up from Arizona state seems a wild swinger than a discipline swing there now have you observed the change and how do you account well when I first saw him I I just thought so much of him I liked him because of the fact that he had a real neat compact swing and he could hit the ball with tremendous power he's gotten to where he's more selective he's more of a discipline hitter than he and he was when he first started great power he's going to hit a lot of home runs in his major-league career exercise looking for something there wasn't a fair fall go inside you can't see it because he's wearing the undershirt today he's got left elbow wrap hyper-extended elbow incurred at Cincinnati on the 18th of September didn't play last Sunday when he picked it he was in the lineup yes and a 1-2-3 inning for a fourth third time in four innings that bob has done there never look now at the swing of Horner knives right on the ball so bob is gone so of the Braves will go to the bottom of the fourth inning it's st. Louis won Atlanta nothing going to the bottom of the fourth inning in st. Louis wonder nothing the Cardinals on top the well crossed one of course Thomas Lasorda that caused him 30 bucks he couldn't believe it when Augusta bill the manicure bet the whole thing that they did everything the whole works Howard when you heard New York New York and between innings what did you think about the man who made it his son Lonnie fouling it away and that sounds I've done that for a lot of stuff you could you can rest assure he's watching his game look at that average against Atlanta Lonnie Smith takes outside one ball one strike the count no question that Lonnie is a great all-purpose offensive ball player no quick one wonders with Horner and he gets him find defensive play by Bob there in a little trouble yesterday on a brother one hand sick here that was one of those do-or-die ladies either/or sniffed and run do still dream about nevels Hernandez at the place I know it's amazing thing after that World Series in Anaheim I had to make a presentation to nettles and I sat next to him at the dinner table and three times he dropped his fork we're talking of course about the 1978 series Dodgers won the first two games there was talk of a sweep and then catastrophe in the form of never one in one account coffee he could be talking about the first two games of the 1981 World Series before Greg went out with a thumb injury yeah let's talk about that yeah that's the Yankees were talking his sweep and then catastrophe when a gritty manager refused to take out valance well now they say why did you take him out Hernando thinks low in the count two balls and one strike I mean if ever there was the story on the irony of managing you're a hero when you leave him in there screaming take him out boy was that a draft joy 22nd round some kind of ballplayer that's like getting bought star in the draft round when they got him Bob Forsch the pitcher tonight was a 38th round pick swaying we come to two balls two strikes the car there's four she was signed by the Cardinals as an infielder look at Hernandez here this one they didn't even need to appeal plate umpire Billy Williams would call this one by himself due to picture Fernandez got him swinging or he had something on em fish throwing very very well Tom it said he would but five or six innings certainly maybe I'll go longer the night but I mentioned early on he went in the trades that brought McWilliams to Pittsburgh and I mentioned that you wanted to McWilliams describe how that happened and why it was not possible for you to get an equipment well we were playing in Atlanta Howard and I read in the paper where the Braves were going to give up on McWilliams so I immediately called Allen told him what I read in the paper before I could do anything why the Pirates went in and made a deal for McWilliams and they gave up Perez and both clubs I felt profited by the trade generally seems to have turned out that way in view of presence late season performances but campaña says always on the fall only time he wasn't was when they blew the game to Georgetown Henrick sacre couer third it's a foul ball count doing one when the Braves picked Perez up from Pittsburgh they sent him to the minors gonna ban a Richmond it's very well there he had started the season Portland in the Pacific Coast League tired farm club and when he was called up he had a 5a no record in the International League look at those September batting leaders by the figure for mr. Hendrick and you see how strongly young Ramirez and Oberkfell and her not several of these fellas were hot what a Washington wasn't even on the graphic which will name the player of the month as I said earlier that this fella could be the MVP of the National League he and Murphy having great years and your guy Guerrero to be Ferrara's had a ey what a ballplayer in five four three three one again what about mr. Oliver as we look at mr. Chari now Oliver came over from the American League and he just continued hitting like he did over there he's an outstanding hitter but you know one day Guerrero will will be an outstanding hitter in the big league he'll he'll be like a Frank Robinson and Ric is odd that's the first walk in a five law for a that's good that's done yes ooh damn Henry's birthday Darryl Porter the batter Howard asking Sami if he still dreams about nettles I wonder if Sam when Chambliss comes up if Herzog thinks back to what happened in 76 Jackyl I tell was the man who threw that pitch to Chambliss at Yankee Stadium walk clock cycle itself a lot of memories to be relived like the various individuals under different circumstances never forget that day when the fans stormed chris under the rules if he never reached home impeded by the fans it still would have been a score I don't know about that what about the ninety no ten Merkel boner when he failed to touch ninth nineteen no ten make 19 L white polo current right failed to touch second base when very well ahead to the umpires dressing room and got umpire Franco dang out steps on second base and they called him out drinking first base three down and you were there - ah Don Porter forever more it was bonehead or nothing Perez's it is stretch position and he has to fall behind him he holds the ball in the complete hand rather than holding a certain way because he may throw the ball differently and he doesn't want the coaches to pick it up said he takes a lot of time coming to that stretch position ease a lot of time little light at go around Tiant used to be that way trying to make it tough for the runner to pick when he's going to stop so he could steal one of these days Darrell Porter is going to hit this ballpark that time he come sit a little bit more quickly and in the right field for a base hit he's on his way to third and the throw comes into second so there are runners corners but to down for the Franklin's in the fourth inning as I was saying I'm one of these days Darrell Porter is going that hit from this fault there's a situation right now where the advantage of him going to third base with two out only because the McKee hit him if the team can stop down on the ball and beat the ball out that run Wilkes for Bob Gibson the pitching coach for Atlanta actually the Braves have two pitching coach rube Walker came down with story from the match Gibson of is the man who does the visioning on the map and they get busy in the bullpen before M Johnny more their long man [Music] their bullpen of course is being five two men who come in late Petrosian and Garber for too early for them now war is the middle any man you ever face itself a pitcher any team of yours been part Gibson great but you also have to remember Mary she'll was just a stock guerrilla absolutely it's been fixed in the last postseason game in this park for the Cardinals reports against Detroit 1760 Willie McGee takes inside cycles ahead one to nothing to out bottom of the fourth inning George Hendrick is the runner at third he drew a walk Darryl Porter with a single is at first held on by family 68 was one of Bob's greatest disappointments thoughts led three games to one blue the series it became the low let's theory that was the play when Lou Brock failed to slide into home ran and was standing up from second on a hit absolutely the gay whose hustle I'm gonna bet count as one and one Whitey Herzog he's given up a title general manager anyway Joe McDonald run in the office and Joe Torre first year the Braves to man either of whom could be manager of the year nobody's gonna squawk away one ball two strikes the count though the name Robinson in absolutely Robinson the Florida had no chances here because with that award is never really given to the best manager on the field it's always given to the guy who takes his team from a spot that the preseason forecasters say will be a third or fourth and take them to the top or takes it from sixth to second so Tommy is the defending champ you are running when the staff even started the spots for the kids provoke kids one stupid so Perez works out of it after some advice from Gibson no runs one hit and two left who for fall it's st. Louis one Atlanta nothing we go to the fifth inning at Busch Stadium in st. Louis now Michaels Howard Cosell Dodger manager Tommy Lasorda and a fellow named George Brett at that chat for you yesterday George still wearing the same st. Louis cap of God's is a throwback to his close friendship with his former and a Jim Whitey Herzog has the ABC moving movie special having it all world premiere next Wednesday 9 o'clock Eastern eight o'clock Central Time having it all special world premiere movie right after the tales of the gold month fifth inning with Royster leading things off outside ball one boy stur Hubbard and Benedict against Porsche who's allowed just one hit through for a single by Washington what this is a situation where the picture feels a little bit better because he's got the bottom half of the order coming up and yet they're trying to score with that part coming up to the plate wanted to walks away shaking his head not the black of the plate on the outside he's God boy he made some pitch right there that is what I call a clubhouse pitch many a pitcher have made them in the clubhouse that's the fourth strikeout for Forsch got a line for everything don't you picked I offered at the plate but to the shrank of the county's old one hovered over one tonight now the crowd wants everything all over sitting Williams gives you picked on the outside so if it's closed them on boys only gone for the third innings but Eva's have you ever seen him look better not this sharp he is really sharp tonight the right-center field and roots going back with McGee what he says so thank you while carrying fairly well that can sure make a manager feel good watching mcdeere on it still can't get over that trade with the Yankees McGee for Bob Sykes may be the greatest field since the Brinks robbery bathtime filled all the way around Smith McGee and drinking forth it was he the line by Bill Madlock that was great they'll get to everything but whether they'll capture it or not is a different story benedict at the plate want to know the count there's a situation right now where 4ch wants to get benedict out awful bad because he wants a pitcher or the pitchers spot to be leading off in the sixth inning rather than having the pitcher hit now it's toward the middle and even Ozzie Smith can't get that one so he failed in that quest dummy and that's only the second hit off mr. Porsche on a give him fetch you give a good fastball to hit nobody's perfect so throughout single to center field by Benedict and Pascual Perez the batter Perez hitting 167 lifts even 159 two years in the big league on one account he was up for the Pirates last season all right no staff picking up right where they left off in September Andujar lookin good yesterday all for naught of course and for tonight it was pitching that wanted for st. Louis in mid-september ha ha dugong on the fifth benedicted first base those around a third in the league in pbra this year three three seven raised well down the back hence he goes away now he's going to go out away with this he's going to try to make it bad so he swings in run fast way the first books to Hernandez and that's step one at the end of four and a half one-nothing st. Louis left the lead things off for st. Louis Howard spoke with his double play partner Tommy Herr about him what's he do that other shortstops can still I think its biggest asset is his ability to die for a ground ball and get back up on his feet and make an accurate thrill on the same motion some sure stuff would get too involved that he gets to but they could never recover and make a play and he makes that kind of play looking team because he does it every day and not only up the middle he's done it in the hole and it's just incredible the acrobatic [Music] reverse of yesterday's lay on forehand throws and get you I saw Perez coming down Austin down going bare handed the ball threw a strike excellent play comet talked about as he's funding a billion ability last time up but they didn't execute it squeezed Ozzie hit the sacrifice fly you'll remember that the counted for the only run was fought starring Willie McGee one down here in st. Louis bases empty borsch at the plate waves and it doesn't get it good hitter for a pitcher this is the kind of game when the maneuvers will shortly be developing the late inning changes will be manager against manager and bench against bench do you agree tom I agree with you wholeheartedly because as you get into the seventh inning then the manager starts figuring out who is pinch hitters they're going to be in what order he's going to use them for the Braves you know on the left hand side they've got their poker Robo who can make contact 1 & 2 the count and he also have a listen ton who can hit pretty good so those are the two guys that Joe Torre will go to against the right-hander of course with a left-handed pitcher he'll go with Watson number one Perez got turned around on it that time we make and it's turned around and wasn't in position to field a ball hit right back over the rubber fallen right over the mound fell off any of those hard throwers they fall off to the side watch it Harry goes right off to the side amazing now all the years and there are still people despite all of spring training all of the practice all of the teaching can execute two years ago in the series that had the greatest sustained drummer I have ever seen Houston against Philadelphia you remember that series Danny Huston had it won in the final game [Music] first Bob Boone hits the ground effect in Nolan Ryan the man mispositioned an easy double play instead leads to a big inning because of Ryan's era look at her against Perez two real one mommy her tonight fly the left one for two 66 during the regular season goes the other way and fouls it away at the counters on one again I bring forth your attention that's what you have to like about this Cardinal ballclub Saamy Harv we mentioned numerous injuries this season in protective gear he'll also rap his finger that's been bothering him when he gets on base and Casey goes down sliding bloody little player the guy's going through chitters Paul where it fits in the bullpen is the earth while starter Rick Mahler who struggled down the stretch in the rotation now working out of the pan [Music] go onto the couch [Music] worship first-base one God finals on top was a nothing getting the run in the third when the McGee at triple Smith's going on a sacrifice fly I saw Perez was the fella here we call the story many of you read about his inverted driver's license in Atlanta earlier than Jesus go down to the fall black ball armed his way went round and around showed up too late mrs. card that team when they were really on the stage in the throes of that 19 out of 20 I wish you would have found his way cause Niekro pitched that game and want it that's right and that started them right back they won 13 limit 15 Sam Alessi alive no chance for Perez to get lost tonight the Cardinals Hotel is right across the street go Tory stand there doing the jackhammers drilling into there his feelings for Dave eight o'clock in the morning or evening did the herds on construction company sorry went for a couple days as you well they only let him use the she is twice because Joe is protecting everything that's left and all my data shows that Luther don't let that line goodbye you like that out on a record that one four five these for Washington backs up makes it back I've never seen alone but laughs gritty well I didn't want to see that one get buried now any Oberkfell flied to left graviton overdue what it all that's where you got a pitch over thought you got to keep the ball down on if he likes to handle the high pitch where he can put it all parts of the field good highball hitter out of play one ball one strike the count team one National League Championship Series one to nothing the kind holes on top Porsche at first base and Chambliss playing behind him one and one not over Excel round it down to Hubbard they'll make the play at first and the Cardinals are done in the fifth we'll go to the sixth inning st. Louis leading Atlanta one to nothing back at four Stadium after this word from our local station top of the sixth inning in Game one of the National League Championship Series Cardinals on top one to nothing scoring in the third inning Willie McGee could have had an EEV inside-the-park home run settled for a triple when he had his head down never thought to cut a waving event but it did not custom there's Ozzie Smith the next banner followed with a fly ball to Murphy in centerfield and it's one to nothing Cardinals the remarkable hitter the corkscrew batting stance they said it would never work it only worked for more than 3600 hits what a great hitter everybody talked about Musial and say what a great guy is who couldn't be a great guy when he got over 3000 hit it show me a 200 hitter who with a good guy I want to be buswell Perez kids done a great job anybody's ballgame one to nothing over four hits to hit sprays and mr. Michael bring you the action and as we go to the top of the sixth inning at the time for the order for Atlanta Washington Ramirez and Murphy the American League off today Game three tomorrow Keith Jackson Jim Palmer Earl Weaver will be at County Stadium 3 o'clock Eastern Time Game three their angels lead two games to nothing we'll be back here tomorrow night with Eugene to Bill Nikko and John stuper will be the picture well they got their leadoff man they've got to get something going here they've got to get something hips get some runners on then you've got to get some hit that's the brew it didn't look like the same brew a team I've seen all year long not last night now that California Club is an outstanding ballclub they have some kinda hitters on that ballclub they do do and gene Mauch talking a Duke Snider I'm convinced 1944 mr. Rickey said to fuzzy Bob Athey you see that kid he'll never be a good ballplayer but there'll be a great manager he's pointing the gene Mauch when gene was in the Dodger farms and away ms he is an outstanding man in the way Mach plays would best recited by the Snyder incidents at anecdote to the hole and throw of a cent for Washington so plug Dell who had a hit yesterday that was washed away a 2 for 3 tonight 16 Player of the Month for September in the National League we're going to see how Torrey plays it here round that's the point what do you look for Tommy well the possibility he could run with Washington who has great speed also he figures with his big hitters coming up he may try to play for a tie the way for suspicion well I'd look for him I look for him to hit and run but just inside the bank and now back onto the first base Ramirez is overdue Washington Goodspeed 33 steals led the club content on romera is up there to swing away and takes outside he's going to go now at the time Porsches behind he's gonna have to try to throw a strike Maris likes to hit the fastball here's the situation where he might get the fat ball Gobert Belleville was in banking up at third the runner goes the pitch is swung on and missed and orders college or one Oh Roth IRA sir but it's getting up into the gloves and down goes Washington well not getting the greatest insight no that was the key al her moving over picked it up on a hop and Washington sliding too early yep never got there very interesting piece of camerawork there because we were a joy Glee position for that situation I'll say one thing that may go down in baseball history as the shortest throw ever to get a guy at second base that ball must have bounced about 20 feet over the pitcher's mound jeralds really had trouble with his omniscient absolutely he was on a disabled list on our throw he's amazing to hit that runner what they'll helping him out a little bit like coming up at the 89 foot mark instead of 90 but what happens sometime is that the fall off the turf may travel at a greater speeds and his throat picks up speed see that I grounders a lot certainly saw it here yesterday on that hit by Lonnie Smith broken bat bouncer back to the box boys to Hernandez he's gonna look now at Washington go in 89 feet and her makin attack now is the spot to look closely as you Steve Washington after the tag arrive you see that his foots indeed never reach the bag used to come up slide and never got to the face whether you chuckle your guy did that you'd kill him Murphy ground it up fouled out to Hendrick he's over 2 fouled at the plate this program an exclusive presentation of ABC sports five seconds here to allow our local stations to identify themselves i with the news follows the game here on WABC TV channel 7 new york buck stadium st. louis now Michael Towers Hotel Tom Lasorda with you one to nothing the Cardinals on top two out six inning and Murphy [Laughter] nobody left on at the end of the stadium wonder nothing hard that deal started when Smith was sent from Philadelphia to Cleveland Bodie as going to the Phillies and Cleveland turned around Finch Smith here and returned Larry Sorensen and Silvio Martinez who pictures did the Indians wanted one account and that the member of the Phillies World Championship club in 1980 [Music] like the ball down Walled all fields and he can get out of that batter's box as quick as anybody affective swaying a little bit way to get there really flying down any the boys so check swing got fooled on the pitch wanted of all da watchin go and out of the white handers satisfying a sample late getting over still might have had him hang on you ever would have had him had he caught the ball but feed port does that kind of mistake especially when there's the initial mistake of starting slowly as is the case with Perez speed is the only thing you use both offensively and defensively in baseball thought no principal of mr. branch Fricke skort is a basehead and here's Keith Hernandez who's grounded out struck out you'll see some action right here with Smith on first and Hernandez at the back her nannies can have a t-handle the back he makes contact and he can hit the ball ball field he's a good hit and run man one e68 seal disease is second only to tim range in the bullpen that's Donnie Moore again Steve the Trojan Bedrosian has just got enough sixth inning I would expect Pedrosa more so if it was one more Petrosian he can't let him hit me anymore you'll have to tell me get him before they for Hernandez at the place if it doesn't go and keep the judging is done after Johnny get him now to use the drugs now he will come and get him now here comes Jimmy as you look at the head again the very plat manipulation with which turn on doesn't seem to be identified going what's the pitch he's probably going to leave him in for one more hitter hendrik is up next he is a right-handed batter following him quarter it gives him to the man with runners at first and third some you think he can risk him the light of what you've already said they can't let him get behind and well the friends in Petrossian he would have [Music] mr. fall to the right side this guy comes up in his little light there are May that's the cried low attack Haeckel a chip nibbling you're right he's believing in me but Rosalyn Lord filth roam with Hendrick Kaname he got Petrosian up real late I'd like to point out to our viewers analysis you said read for five or six inning you just on that graphic of what we've got for you Monday night that's incredible and starting over there's a double play that they enjoy going put it down swing these and mixers in the counter zone one dawning oval with Burt Reynolds Candice Bergen and Jill Clayburgh and third proving to the world that he could do sophisticated parse perhaps in the manner of the very great Gary Graham everyone's going to take one shot at the long ball and now he'll start trying to make contact let the league and sacrifice fly this year since laksa go got home when he needed through this season 14 sacrifice flies not his pitch here and too late for him to hold up really pulled on that fit he still when he gets two strikes he's a tough hitter he doesn't strike out a whole lot let's try to make contact infield DoublePlay depth they'll turn stay out of a big inning and give up two pages long ball two strikes ago you better keep getting that ball out there Lonnie Smith the third Steve Hernandez at first there's the one through delivery the CLE shortened up on that decide to make contact I did George Hendrick with two strikes almost guiding the ball straight back through the nose mr. Perez and the dominant figure in this ball game is the man who's not even yet in it Bruce Suda sorry to the mouth waiting right now is a lot of fun family tool in default what's the inside man that would be Bedrosian the perez leaves in the 6th inning the Cardinals on top power had emerged from the shadows Reggie Jackson mr. October Fred Lim Tom Baylor Tommy John and boots - silence Tallulah back this is the power of California hungry for a sweep and game free tomorrow on ABC Ted Turner not very happy about the way things are going and Bill bartholomae of the Braves the launch side of him we've got Ted from a different angle this time checking the stats Phil of course was the leader of the group that originally bought the then Milwaukee Braves from Luke farini and moved them to Atlanta and he is still listed in the chairman of the board of the brave exactly so it's gonna be very interesting here how white he's gonna play in this situation he said if he bunts the ball then he have the left hand is hitting the key coming up and he will be followed by hockey Smith in the pitcher so there's a good chance that he might have Porter hitting the Playtex outside wall nobody out were the bottom of six inning Cardinals on top see nothing Keith Hernandez is a second George James Rick the runner at first the Trojans going to look for a strikeout he can throw hard Steve Bedrosian was a starter in the minors he was called up by the Braves Lance caucus they made him a relief pitcher and he's done a great job out of the pen comes in throws five can give you through three innings necessary turn it over to Garber supporter everyone that laughs that's what sold hard so hard but he's got to get this guy come back and get him trouble in this river city for the Cardinal dinner he had quarter hearings for one reason howdy sacrifice they would possibly have walked the keys it's to Ozzie Smith in the pictures they have to drive in to run which they have not been successful so he had Porter hitting and wind up getting away with it with the man walking gibson again with Benedict corner and Chambliss the Trojans are throwing let's bake in a situation like this young fella a year in a hammock strange you come in a situation like this they're all hopped off a little bit before just gonna have to get over to play he's got the strikeout McKee this is what he's got to look for right here a strikeout he's got to throw hard and he's got the throw to fall in on Magee so he doesn't hit it the other way Willie had a triple should have been an inside-the-park Homer and struck out he's 1 for 2 infield plays in another town - 9600 during the regular season he failed off at the end much of the year up over 300 [Music] with which Perez struck out here's last time up doll with the bases loaded and Rick the waiter was late a second and Porter now aquifers oh he's got a good chance of tracking him out through the infield alignment they were e'en on the first fix now back to halfway you can see with Hubbard Ramirez just in pants the halfway mark I want to do it now the stayed alive on that one that's what I'm talking about these Cardinal hitters they do not over swing particularly when they get to strike and they try to hit the ball where it's pitched the geese an alive he strikes out about an average amount of time he went down swinging 58 times this season 422 at-bats to Braves nothing and st. Louis to break it open bases-loaded Hernandes holding a third i want to take any chances with nobody out you gotta try to score here you better make sure you can score absolutely what that fall over was hit him in the knee he's very lucky to get this knee out of the way Benedicte going back to get it Metro's you ready to cover home but Fernandez the plane a fellow who throws fan toys not to throw one all year for the basis of to make sure that ball wasn't put that's the reason why is in sport but there they go again making contact with two strikes they do not strike out and situations like [Applause] we saw Henry Stewart with two strikes you seen this guy - Asifa what they are a bunch of pet oh yeah balls it over the infield yeah that went off a broken bat IV switch at the plate on one account 25 hang on the Gorgons last he's pointed at Paul like he was a home run hitter he did now he's gonna shorten up and dribble one over to third baseman all-4-one tonight overplaying back for a double play if IG Smith hits the ball on the ground it's going to be very tough to double him off Alijah [Music] [Music] a little bit harder stay off of the ball if he's playing Sookie for nothing got loose behind Claudell they notice fans yep I think Tori was trying to bring him in closer let's see [Music] arrange a ball and two strikes Athena corner always fouled away I wish somebody would say no to that bottle well that's a dangerous instrumentality right you've got several million people around the country right now who know there's a bottle out on the warning track but nobody's been able to get the attention of the umpires I believe that a plastic soda bottle Petrosian five times tummy and bears out again everything you've said meet the ball is tail there goes a man out there to pick up that plastic soda bottle finally it's removed from the arena areas with it a TV set back there [Music] what is your job 3-nothing the guards Louis bases-loaded nobody out that's a basic things we come to the store Taliban they thought nope overjoyed at horizon and again Camila thought it pointed out deal with the matter of fighting the pictures saying five times he said pitch to his liking good punch to the opposite field do it so many times against us whether they hit the ball over the infield like that hit the ball the other way very rarely can you strike them out I'll make it two strikes they really fight them guys a good hitting pitcher now don't forget it warmer in fielder that's the way game up my name good foul and the count is going one on Bob porch it's 2:05 this season at one point higher than his lifetime average and he's hit six career home runs the last coming in June of 80 good hitting pitches when you throw that curveball that makes a big difference Whittle why the center lane of Murphy he makes the catch corner [Applause] arrow pointers tagging a third doesn't have blazing speed Murphy made a thesis though not in front yeah Benedict would this should have been walking in a play had Benedict thinking rule further back he would have had a player that's right that's Molly for us by the way then she can feel pretty proud here's the point right here look at Benedict he's up he's up close if he had gotten back on them to take the throw back he'd had a place blocks the plate trying to take the plate away from sporters good closer would have been right on that plate block edema block the plate as good as any catcher I've ever seen moving in a second his ID says look at sorry at the moment this conflict but no quick madman as we've mentioned this Cardinal team Tommy reminds you of when they used to have all those rabbits running around Johnny hop and Jimmy Brown and the rest of those guys remember them here but they keep the ball a little bit harder than these guys have been hit me probably fill the Grogan who did not throw a wild pitch in the regular season going on here and almost had one prior to that five nothing the Cardinals on top the one okay [Music] per the eighth man to bat in the inning typical Cardinal attack in this inning five singles a walk and a sacrifice fly watch this guy he'll start making contact watching you throw the ball over the plate hit the ball somewhere two balls two strikes consistently up in the 90s 195 miles per hour five miles an hour but they're hitting them back about 47 miles another prison they also do let's see and they fight them again a third [Music] live-action listening championship series records they've got in this format the guy woman at least that's the other guy so hard I'll say if a couple innings you can throw as hard as anybody in baseball at 95 miles an hour Tory still has Donnie Moore in the bullpen game started to get out of hand you don't want to make the Trojan a sacrificial lamb necessarily you'll go to more here and save the Trojan even though he hasn't looked scintillating tonight he's got a key man for them [Music] as good Rogen requires his first rank up and over fellas the batter Cardinals have hit around Kenny the ninth man to come up in the inning [Music] twice over three there's no letter with any of these guys they're all challenging contact hitters so to fall up high he placed the ball up on him inside he'll hit it over the other way inside out that's right that's what they do one and one on over Excel a third these are the secular 53,000 deep but Stadium in st. Louis first time the Cardinals have made it to the plate last season they had the best record overall in the Eastern Division for the split season sandwich Crysta thinking himself the ball off the line Sammis looking for him they would he think of it he had those genes except the one over to first down he went on a car so it should be a routine play the Cardinals catch it and make it six to nothing gamblers ready to come up and flip to the drug in and was wondering where he was that's the cardinal sin of pitching when you don't break over to get the first base that was a terrible terrible play time fall down here comes sorry Lonnie Smith is the batter he started the inning with a single now his way of what you said a moment ago becomes very important I would suspect he will take Petrosian out and not make him in your words the sacrificial lamb they'll be doing the right thing and that ties the record for most runs in an inning and that's what you have to do basically in a situation like this because you'll want to be able to come back with Bedrosian if you can and Donny Moore becomes in essence that sacrificial lamb is they'll try to get out of the inning stick something this is what happened after the drogon failed to cover first which the reaction of stage burner [Applause] vacating the premises at least temporarily with his team trailing six to nothing and Lonnie Smith the batter getting hit by the pitch raised I would guess if he trots out got North twice in this inning he's the guy that started it all he started it with a basin here it is again better to get hit by more than Petrova Keith Hernandez the batter by the way to scoring on the overall play with the drugs and failing to cover it to beat it scored as a single in the sixth hit of the inning you're kidding that's what they scored hit on that ball if the Trojans over there the guys out and you get the names of those scores you are the okay for a strike in the town is wanted very kind of explosion you can applaud against this team especially not against any team but this team is special the way gorgeous kitchen Jack gehrman's one of the stories that can't believe that white hands a veteran a lot of years for Washington right no.6 an apple the st. Louis Cardinals with five runs in the sixth inning breaking it open and leading it six to nothing coming up Saturday Washington ranked number one against California three in one under Joe Kapp pac-10 matchup Iowa against Indiana Southern Mississippi against Mississippi State Holy Cross against Colgate our other regional games 3:30 eastern PA a counter football this Saturday Huskies of course an explosive team marvelous passing attack brilliant coach even extraordinary our members development of Jack Lambert when he was at Kent State brought damage to open competition with the great Miami team of Ohio the cradle of coaches then moved out west and the Huskies proved themselves the peradventure God James commander yes this tram was to lead off in the seventh inning 4:14 to the wall and the MIDI device or to Mars makes the job that's all we talked about it the difference between these two differences between these two ball plaques not only 414 to straightaway center here but 386 to the gaps and I get the outside of the Astrodome or candlestick plaque on a particular night this would be the toughest bleep in home run that's true but the astrodome remains itself the toughest without question what this situation does it makes an imperative that Joe go to Negro tomorrow night don't you agree yes sir I believe he's going to go to that man one all pitch in the dirt do Bob Horner corner dead pull hitter evidence right there Tommy her up the middle on the left field side of second outfield deep and around toward left order order I've seen his bowl on the other side let's fall over there this time by over self-drawn saw two guys any over subs coming up as a second baseman they wanted to get her into the lineup traded retort fell to third and he's done a good job for them this is just one game at the best of five series and the way Atlanta's played all years you look at the very great Lou Brock you can't count Atlanta out of this theory what this game manifest has been the cleverness of Whitey Herzog and tearing apart the ballclub as we've talked about at the start of the telecast putting it back together tailor-made for this ballpark and there is the gravel-voiced manager tremendous job and he's an outstanding manager tonight lines coming up focusing tonight on Amerasians thousands of homeless children Vietnamese by birth American by birthright Awad to join their families in America Topol with Nightline tonight [Music] the way survived into the way third side aside for its rolling along at the end of six and a half in Game one six laughing st. Louis [Music] that Journal ona Atlanta Braves just saw him leaving earlier hope no misconception conveyed the man is back one of America's most enterprising sportsmen he's proved that one of America's most enterprising broadcast as he's proved that and a resilient man one live or die by one day's contest who's seen his manager and his team come back all yell long his team trailing six nothing George Hendrick leading Locke in the bottom of the seventh inning one and one the count Bruce Souter in the dugout no apparent need for him at the moment Bob Forsch a three-hit shutout from chef Washington goes into the corner has room what's it away all hangs heavy in this ballpark usually along the final lines it goes for a good ride it's in the gaps that it hangs Debbie but tonight it appears to be hanging heavy now 3rd inning Cardinals got a run on McGee's triple and Smith sacrifice fly and then there was the big damage in the sixth inning Lonnie Smith began things with a base hit before it was over and done with 11 men had come to the plate I picked up five runs like on the outside part oh and one narrow the to 31 this year one and one corner if any of the Cardinals inferred the fans wrath the season at any point it was him on several occasions they were disappointed in particular office more washing in the play second the throw is on five and the fat was just taken quickly off the field by a bat boy who was your bat boy what's he coming for the Dodgers you later say it again Washington playing that can of just right perfect bare hands but then the throw is offline for the first base side of the bag Porter had to double the second hit of the night I've never seen a bad boy come out of the chute to get a bat like that young man has he Shawn roared any son of Micra Rd and he's our bad boy during the season when we were down to two nothing against the Yankees that called Mike up I said get Shawn over here right away destroying to the counties or two solid hits by Porter tonight and the keyboard from Pedrosa remember that loaded the faces and that really set up the beginning no balls two strikes the count on McGee oh really hanging heavy along those foul lines Tom that's right off-course right they're usually down the line the ball travels good [Music] on to the cows the bullpen falldown he wore them instead because Tory has to look ahead here he's got more coming up third when Atlanta hits in the eighth the walk is going ah until Willie McGee got the call up in May this year they were going with David Greene in the field and he's still on the team for a prospect the Queen got hurt McGee up and figured as soon as Greene got well they'd been living back to Louisville Willie had other ideas about 450 over that two-week stretch and why he said Hill Kentucky for you pal daddy goes here Oh God [Music] Willie McGee lunging at it [Applause] on the picker way [Music] Ozzie Smith two RBIs tonight about the efforts yep backpack jump Chuck chew em up record want to know the count six runs 11 hits in one error for the Cardinals no runs three hits and no errors for the Braves for direct second one and one the telecast presented by authority of Major League Baseball may not be reproduced or retransmitted in any form without the express written consent looking towards the Atlanta eighth inning and all probability of Joe will send up Wizards into hit for the pitcher more gets to the bag and up and doing for st. Louis in the seventh inning no runs one hit one man left on on to the east we go five six Braves nothing we'll be back here tomorrow night Phil Niekro against rookie John stuper the matchup team to 8 o'clock Eastern Time so tomorrow and Milwaukee as fula cookies you'll ever face Don Sutton lazada the biblical figure from Norristown Pennsylvania can tell you all about the tough pitcher he's been a big winner over the years and when you get him into his playoff game he becomes even tougher he's an outstanding pitcher and of course we've talked about film nikka one of the remarkable men in American sport a simply superb competitor coming back after one day's rest but with the arm to do it and the confidence in boys to do it what about mr. for super super game he's alive so far covered with the shrank in the counters oh and one Hubbard Benedict and then a pinch-hitter coming up in the eighth inning force been around the plate all night per usual having to walk the man look out for the three hits he has yielded have all been singles two of them by Claudell Washington and the other by Bruce Benedict no balls two strikes ago by the way Negro is not on the Atlantic getting some heat on next race that down by four every day you'll remember to me that Joe said the only problem with phil was with his thumb [Music] Bruce Benedict safe on an error and a base hit meri Wiginton as predicted by Lasorda has come out on deck good for Donnie more next hyperbole want to go there he is st. Louis native coming home he'd unfilled shoulder just to loosen him up frightened whether he's on a roll young body Porsche has been just outstanding tonight he has made super super pictures the entire night he's kept that breaking ball to the right hand hitters on the outside part of the plate he's just been a master out there [Music] we had a rough time during the regular season facing the same near perfection he's given up three hips against the top hitting Atlanta club what's interesting is you look again foul tip held on do it here that just goes to show you guys out there with throwing the ball 91 92 miles an hour you don't have to have that blazing speed to be a big winner in baseball all you have to do is have good control during the regular season for shin ten and two thirds innings against this club gave up 10 runs and 19 hits but that was during the regular regular season point of information in first RIKEN account only one during the regular season Atlanta had great success against Sudha believe it or not you know another thing a lot of managers might have taken that into effect and said hey baby won't pitch this guy against this ballclub because of the inability to get him out during the season let that man down there Whitey Herzog he believes in his pitching staff because in here I wasn't into and one that's hub Kittle the pitching coach out instructions dylan picture coyote they called him in the Dominican Republic coyote our goals and daddy three and one - I have nobody on 6-nothing Cardinals eighth inning Game one National League Championship Series wants to throw a strike right here with the Dylan all probability it's time to do that when you're traveling six to nothing that's [Applause] and at the end of seven and a half that remains sixteen st. Louis on campus especially gonna worry about in C Louis the hand is for five forces you look at Bob walk to new Atlanta pitcher and a crowd most of them giving a standing O a man working we hit shutout driven in a run tonight with a sacrifice fly well-deserved round of applause for a great performance an outstanding [Applause] to strike in the count as old one the fourth Braves pitcher Perez Brogan and more proceed again tonight to hitch in a sacrifice fly a three-hit shutout the way either way just laid that fat out that tell you before the game he's a good hitter he's a good bowler as an infielder originally spent three years playing the infield before they converted him wrinkles in the center 12 hits for the Cardinals tonight it's your basic Cardinal attack 10 singles one double one trumpet and walked out of position as the ball went fast mommy her once before walk was acquired from the Phillies in the math you feel which looks one-sided right now the Braves think walking fix who's been erratic he's in her - this year he had a good first part of the season when the Braves won 13 in a row walk pitched very very well for them but the second half he has not pitched very well field 13 is it will stop for a second amazing in it 13 hits how many of them are single 11 one double one triple as I pointed out a moment ago or two on with nobody down and her with the injured finger herded down the stretch and they apply the bandage there so that if he slides and goes down with his hand paves two fingers together we'll do any more harm to the interdicted [Music] and over itself one four four orly the game were closed earlier you might see him bunting in a situation like that you may see in any way but it's six nothing you would think you'd be swinging away this business another day another game Atlanta came in to the right side Hubbard is there goes to second too bad so the bases are loaded very tough play for Hubbard he was going the other way at a spin around and so it's ranked Ramirez the reason why you saw over felt hip rather than but why he doesn't want to aggravate the opposition by trying to pour it on them bluntly if he tried to fund that situation it may hurt the other club and that's what whitey is trying to stay away from exactly the point I was making there if you're leading by six to nothing if your fun even though about as a conservative at that point on that land came in here it's gold to win one out of two yes honor to would be great and they know that tomorrow is another day if they can believe here with a split then he'll be winces there where they are and win two out of three they believe that's the way you have to look at it when you're starting out the playoffs on the road bases-loaded nobody out scoring on the last play a base hit he'll play in don't wanna count on Lonnie we looked up and here they have the bases loaded and nobody out again they want to merry-go-round route in the sick sitting the bases loaded for 15 minutes wound up with five runs pema they call for a slider in that situation but walk shook him off and wanted to throw the fan fault I know he's shaken again now he wants a breaking ball - hey let's see if they send the Murphy makes the catch - they're going to burping throw I'm having close the first two calls but not the third everyone knows this one what makes idea about harry wendelstat and some less Vicki gave the fidon't gay a line drive russell picks it off instant replay showed it was nearly a foot above the ground simple catch and wendelstat was I'm firing a third he calls it no catch Russell had to change his lob throw to second tried to throw to first now the plate third safe at 30 there then time had not been called now now you got to watch this because this is wendelstedt funny bit well Harry gets into every guide to trouble in the final week this is the one that guilt sorry look at that apparently [Applause] apparently out he was late getting to the bag now walked out of it by wendellstat Vettori now goes to the mound the Lasorda could write a book about wendellstat based on his experience look at this one more time locked out of the bag lay eggs out yeah this who would seem that at the convention you can get misleading angles but that seemed to be convincing now the invention will walk to Keith Hernandez with runners at second and third to reload the bases Cardinals on top seven to nothing take the bat out of his hands and go to work on Hendrick and hope for a ground ball and get out of the inning end of lozada wendellstat breakers got to run Daniel Valenzuela was pitching that game with one out of the eighth inning and that's when it all happened as umpires for playoff games it fire in National League history this is AC and this year they're going in on as you mentioned yesterday the merit system it used to be disco taken I'll say one thing they've got some good on fire down on that field I tell you we are very very proud of our national league umpire all come on Tommy now really I say if they are good umpire that's what I love about the managers we bring into the booth of what dogs right I want to know what you want to know that is the gospel truth up tongue good umpire and that's why these guys were picked because they are good umpires well what about Harry's call on Russ he missed it thank you [Music] one out bases loaded there was nothing the Cardinals asked out Weaver starts to praise the umpires tomorrow that's what I know we're in a lot of trouble he did a financial game he said the guy made a good call [Laughter] most of the council ago they'd like to salute we were in Palmer doing a good job over there with Keith I said you know I never saw any that'll be a foul ball foul ball never saw anything more thrilling more touching than Sunday path when the people of Baltimore stayed in the Baltimore Memorial Stadium to pay homage and it's totally understandable that he would break down and cry as he did and what a beautiful thing is the Harvey teams all of he's all that he spends on his personal life go over and hug girl and congratulate baseball for the miss Farrell Weaver baseball 58 manager the old with the walk takes care of joys let me say this Tommy it's been a remarkable year for baseball and all time sees an attendance record and one of the nice moments at Dodger Stadium when the three million plan went in and you collected your team and you stood there when the announcement was made on the pitcher's mound and saluted the fan say your team play it was our way of showing the fans how much we appreciate the support they've given us because of the fact that without the fans why baseball is inoperable and even before the season started that night in March in Phoenix Arizona when Billy Martin showed what he's really like and we raised over $100,000 for the Kenny boy one of the most beautiful evenings ever and Bob Uecker and Joe Garagiola joining in just a remarkable tribute Warners drilling into the gap in right center field and Murphy is able to make their running the rain is getting further damaged the twenties been done already get a run of the Michael st. Louis leading nothing defensive cane for the Cardinals David Green comes into play left field taking over for Lonnie Smith somehow someway they'd love to be able to find room for him in the Garden alive field in the future you got to look at the body on that green he has really put together look like when he put that shirt on he left the coat hanger in it look at the shoulder news on defensively in the ninth inning tribals have things well in hand on top by a score of seven to nothing [Music] Palmer did it in 1973 for Baltimore nothing did it against Pittsburgh in 74 every moment of it one away in the night thing Alan Watson is always doing an effective job up in the booth he perfectly an information source out it makes it look very easy Ozzie Smith can play with the best of them okay you'd have to call this performance by forge a masterpiece Rafael Ramirez is one is really getting the edge of that plate that's what you could do with statistics sometime here's the guy that to given up ten runs against the Atlanta Braves the average two point six seven strikeouts per nine innings this year got six tonight Oh today is going to Porsche engine walked anybody tonight giving a free hit and he's faced three men over the middle to say about statistic sometimes they could be lies lies in damn lie what was that he said he knew he had achieved dated in the last two years as a pitcher then you go into the Atlantic clubhouse after this game don't think for one moment and this is not a filled up for tomorrow as you look at Herzog don't think for one moment you'll see this bear their prose and Joe will just shake it off we've been through it before rounded down to over a third don't win tomorrow's ballgames very poisonous stuff once you leave here the rest of them are in Atlanta right so figure out you figure if you get a split here they can beat the Cardinals two out of three rather than the Cardinals beating them throughout it remember that earlier figure we threw out 95 home the fans upstanding the Bob [Applause] for one Murphy hitting again with nobody on [Music] they're showing their appreciation for a great performance by Ford and his teammates
