12:20 PM!!!!! 9:20 AM on the west coast!!!

What baseball was like when everything wasn't about making the most money possible for a playoff game.

Edit: It swung both ways, Game 7 started after midnight on the east coast!

[Music] in New York a stadium filling up a raw day and a damp day but right now it's dry for the first time at about the 16 hours as we get set for an on-time start for Game three of the National League Championship Series the LA Dodgers taking on the New York Mets how Michael was at Shea of course we began Tuesday night in Los Angeles when the Mets rallied with three runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Dodgers 3-2 but the Dodgers bounced back knocked David Cone out after two innings in Game two and won it by a score of 6-3 so even at a game apiece and a week from today the World Series will be opening either here or in LA and what has to happen between now and then is for either of these teams to win three more games Tim McCarver what about the rainout last night will will one team benefit more than the other from it I think the Dodgers will benefit slightly from it because of Orel Hershiser and they have a better chance to go two games to one in the series and also John Tudor has a chance to rest for two more days and rest that hip of his that had a spasm a week from yesterday but think of how they have to earn it when you when you think about the Dodgers in today's game the the Los Angeles Dodgers come into Shea and the New York Mets have won 56 games 56 games over the course of the season and that's one of the big reasons I think that they have have such a tough time today well this is a key game obviously a pivotal game and the Dodgers have cheesy rotation with with Hershiser going today Ron darling working for the Mets what about what about you Jim Pablo what do you think will one team benefit more than the other well we go from short sleeves to long underwear and that's how cold it is here today and I would say that probably a pitchers are gonna be the warmest people not because working with the next cutter I'm not gonna say they work harder but they will be moving around more but I think actually you know the toughest thing in baseball and as a former pitcher for 19 years coming back and pitching against another team back-to-back either back-to-back series during this season or back-to-back ball games in a playoff if anybody can do it of course first at Orel Hershiser Kaiser can and probably the one thing blustery weather he is a more of a control pitcher even though darlings had a great year 14 and 1 here I wonder about Hershiser and his contact lenses very windy will that affect them well we'll find out shortly this game will be starting on time in just a minute or two Hershiser for the Dodgers darling for the Mets the National League Championship Series brought to you by the heartbeat of America today Chevrolet v Budweiser each would age for that clean crisp taste this Bud's for you and by goodyear eagle tires goodyear because there really is a difference so the New York Mets have taken the field for m3 as a National League Championship Series the delayed Game three Game four tomorrow nineteen five now Monday at noon and the Dodger lineup Steve sax will be leaving off at second base and Mickey Hatcher who was inserted into the lineup and played a big part in Dean to is back in Kirk Gibson still looking for his first hit in the series Mike Marshall has four hits in the two games John Shelby bats fifth the centerfielder Mike Scioscia is the Dodger catcher Jeff Hamilton he's at third base the shortstop is the switch-hitting Alfredo Griffin and Orel Hershiser because of the rainout works today in Game three instead of Game four Ron darling on the mound for the New York Mets sensational here at home and 17 and 9 overall on the season and good success this season against the Los Angeles Dodgers and let's get the inside pitch on Ron darling from Philadelphia Phillies slugger Mike Schmidt Ron darling the secret to Ron success in my opinion is did a great athletic ability in his attitude he's one of the best fielding pitchers in the game he just loves to play love the pit he doesn't have all the powering stuff he realized a great deal on finesse and deception he has a running fastball that runs in on right-handed hitters and away from left-handed hitters he must get ahead of hitters so he can stay out of the middle of the plate his out pitch is his split fingered fastball he loved to get ahead of the hitter and get him to chase that split finger pit Ron darling beat the Dodgers twice this season he's 7 and 3 lifetime against Los Angeles sensational as you see at home 3 & 8 on the road so here we go and Eve Sachs tries to bunt his way on foul ball on the wet grass of the countess oh and one so Sachs figuring he would take immediate advantage with the infield a bit slick and not only is the grass red of course in terms of the infielders making their charge but they'll pick up a slick baseball as well McReynolds wilson and strawberry in the outfield with Jeffery to third Johnson at Short Backman at second and Fernandez at first Gary Carter back of the plate darling on the mound one of the interesting things about darling and you saw the tremendous disparity Hallman road if there were a 17 it would be in LA on the road sax pops it up Johnson is there in the wind and makes the pack one away not much of a problem on that pop-up but as the day goes along a stadium with it's tricky wins and that could be a very big factor that's because of the horseshoe shape remember Willie Mays told me that here's a guy who played in San Francisco Candlestick Park most of his career that Shea Stadium was a toughest center field to play in the nationally anchor grounds one foul and the count no balls and one strike and a look around Shea Stadium on a raw very chilly and very damp day it's misting at the moment [Music] check swing foul the counters over to get a lot of those results from Ron darling because of that moving running fastball hold the ball with the scenes which is a much easier in the day like today you can go to your hand on the mound normally you have to walk off the mound during the season the kinds of basketballs one with the scenes another one across the scenes that he cuts away and acts like a slider that's off the end of the bat it's fun to the right of the mound and shoveled by darling - her name is - meow so quickly two down here in the first inning and that will bring up Gibson the umpires Joe West at the plate Dutch Rennert Bob Davidson Paul Runge harry wendellstat down the line and left and John McSherry down the line and right [Music] Kirk Gibson the question weren't physically coming into the series because of the problems he had and all the time he had to take off in September with the hamstring full he's old for 6 in this series but he did get aboard indeed 2 and steal second wanna know the count to go back the last three or four years this would be not be an ideal day to play behind rod darling took a lot of time through a lot of balls a lot of three two counts this year I think one of the reason he's been so successful I don't know why he hasn't done it on the road but here at home is that he has said I try to be a little bit more aggressive throw strikes get ahead of the count [Music] eat my infielders and outfielders on their toes not back on their heels not deep into the count [Music] two out bases empty the one one to Gibson is now straight back even though Gibson fallows balls back the other way I think he's a type of hitter that is going to be the toughest guy for darling to handle David Cone and Dwight good two pitchers from Kirk faced in Games one and two through the high fastball darlings of the effective has to stay down and Gibson a good low ball hitter they're a half it's design is nothing and effects coming up [Music] Hershiser has seen this lineup before namely team one Wilkie Wilson Drive things in centered before killing Jeffrey's defense second Hernandez hits third Darryl Strawberry of course is in the cleanup spot Kevin McReynolds who is hitless in the two game was bad Smith the switch-hitting Howard Johnson is assured Sakia Gary Carter the game one hero bats seventh Wally Backman in the eighth spot and Ron darling who set the Dodgers down in order in the top of the first inning so now Orel Hershiser on three days rest goes to the mound he and Danny Jackson time for the National League lead in victories with 23 the inside pitch on oral now for Mike Smith World Fair shot his best pitch is this curveball you might throw that curveball at any time and that's important in the playoffs because hitters can all hit fastball he all speed pitches are the tough pitches hit hit he has a good fastball we called it a heavy ball it's a heavy sinking fastball that he runs in on right-handers hands he'll run it off the outside corner to a right-hand hitter and keep it away from left-handed hitters a point for watching this game tonight is whether or not pitching on three days rest tires out his arm and straightens that sinker out and we will look for that as Hershiser gets set to work on Mookie Wilson Wilson hit 296 during the regular season as a left-handed batter he hit 311 they I think any tired arms going to be invigorated today with this weather rather the griffon it takes a nice convenient forum and Woolston thing comes out number one Hershiser takes care of the leadoff hitter Jeffries coming up in the Dodgers defensively here in season three the appeal Shelby and Marshall Hamels in a third Griffin at Short Sachs his second and again attacked her at first Franklin Stubbs was there in Game one and Mickey took over in Game two Scioscia back of the plate and again Hershiser who worked even a third innings in Game one he happened Dodgers or had the Mets shutout through a above two hits in the night and out and when it was over the Mets had a 3-2 victory against Powell ball one to Jeffrey or four seven in the two games that first game all of his free hits and that ball game her on fastball so what does Orel do tonight tries to get the curveball over now he misses with both of them - and OH as Mike Smith said he can't throw this curveball at any time three and all the job Game one carefree single to right field to left field and up the middle four pitches for the match the game's first baserunner Jeffery's with good speed and a question about the running game today is the conditions of the infield even though it's been discovered over the past couple of days because of the rain it's still what saw here that it would normally be I think so but you know they have a good ground crew here and if you look out the field does not look like it might be a little bit moist does not look heavy Horace Jeffries is such great speed can run the guy that home-plate that can handle the bat and a sinker ball pitcher I know what you leading to yeah the sofas of all Hernandez makes it strike one [Music] you notice that step front leg of Mercia ah that gives him an added advantage when he goes to first face Johnny Sain used to teach that Jim taught one of the leading proponents to the stiff front leg [Music] Orel Hershiser does is what most pitchers did this this year when they do so much running especially in the national league is what we call the slide step he automatically already has that he's been doing them for years very difficult to run on talk about that magic number getting the home plates to Bob to home plate under 1.4 seconds I would say he does it probably a little over one second so he's going to give his getcher today Mike Scioscia a great chance of throwing out anybody that's going to attempt to run the only thing he has to worry about with Greg Jeffries or any base runners to make him stop now see that's a barcode what he does breaks his knee tries to get Jeffries to towards second then comes the first base into what basically you just got to drop your left knee and drop your shoulder at the same time first baseman one out or if you do it a lot you can allow an umpire to get used to that tube and they think that even though it is technically a block used to seeing it consequently they don't call it he does it all the time he's consistent with [Music] a lot of baserunners will tell you what they do is look at that front leg of a pitcher when he lifts his heel that's one name assume he's going to home play so if you can come up with a move where you lift your heel but you don't go home you go to first occasion you'll get a pickoff Jeffrey stole five bases he was up for about a month and he's the type of of baserunner who'll give you 40 maybe 50 steals over the course of a full year three and one the second position so his numbers have progressively gone down it was sort of Ron perranoski on his right as far as stealing bases because he does not want then you certainly don't want to run [Music] time was called you're wet so three balls and one strike on Hernandes no score bottom of the first inning Jeffries who walked perfect big average is about 30% fouled away and the count 3 & 2 an idea what a good food the home plate will do to a catcher converse of horses the way the Mets pitchers are with Gary Carter's who's only thrown out 21% doughnut hole runners on that well darling may be an exception even though they've brought on him a little bit we're going to have a chance to see right now because Jefferies is going bring it to one out the fishes could foul off to the left how to play and her these brakes is bad you'll see a lot of balls he picked that ball off the end of the bat and on a cold day like today you'll see more balls sit off the end of the bat because the hitters are very very strong you couple that with what Mike Schmidt said about this being the playoff series and guys are better fastball hitters the Adrenaline's really running and he pitched it off the end of the bat breaks his bat a few guys is not wear gloves Jefferies did not wear gloves out in California where the temperatures are in the 70s today he had his clothes on a stadium still a lot of empty seats as you can see not only is the weather terrible but the people who held the tickets for last night's game yet to come today if you bought a ticket for today's game you don't get the competence of our of eight this is really yesterday's game right Jeffery's goes to pictures found away lights are on on a on a groovy day Dena for tomorrow night at 8:00 Eastern Time but again the 15 now pushed back until Monday which would have been a travel day that will be a day game it will start at boom Eastern Monday Game six if necessary Tuesday in LA and a 17 will be played Wednesday the world series will start either here or at Dodger Stadium [Music] Versailles are checking Jeffrey take a look at that pickoff move see how he breaks his knee it's almost a move to home plate a lot of umpires and I thought pitching is great training they've actually got Mars and what Stricker with boxtrolls in America he's very lucky threw the ball right into Jefferies catcher with no chance of reaching that ball but his Jeffrey's that stayed there now and then left me buckles you're really committed to go home you're deceiving me your honor this is better a thoughtful right there yeah there's a Bach bull whoa then I'm surprised that that has not been called let's see it really this is the true story you pitch in spring training pitch against the barrack League umpires they would not call the park I go up to West Palm someplace where either Lana Braves or West the Montreal Expos minute to try that move the runner goes right down to second because it's a balk but again I think what you're saying is true he does it so often they're allowing him to get away with it [Music] three-two-one out Jeffery's goes the first today a lot of pitches to Hernandez 9 in fact that whoever he comes to the plane robbery at 269 during the regular season for the second consecutive years 39 home runs if Eve before against Hershiser and forth Aurel out of the game with a ninth-inning double Geoffrey's at second and as it first good breaking good and a kid it's like that Jim marie-line he he'd never met a he didn't like is the first cave just that one war and already to here in the first inning deep three [Music] Marie also said in that article that Darryl Strawberry was like a mule Skinner that swung a bullwhip over a for work for racks team and he does way he curls that bat that's where he gets his power and that's also why can't pull the ball as effective the way there's a lot of guys he's got he's far too come with that arm watch how he curls the bat [Music] when he starts before - it was he's always been succesful little ball whereas Hershiser does not pitch [Music] her signs are finding it difficult to get into rhythm and again it wouldn't figure to be the three days rest I would think the weather would be far more of a factor again as we mentioned at the beginning of the telecast twice working on three days rest during the streak and on each occasion a shutout well it's funny about the window we didn't really have we had a graphic we didn't show you but they said that basically Wynn was only about seven or eight or nine miles per hour maybe ten at the most it seems to be more but the wind can take away your curveball did it from Toronto just kind of makes it instead of breaking sharply kind of backs it up that's not a good pitch to throw to strawberry as grounded to Griffin he goes to sex for one back to first safely down the line to keep the inning alive as Jeffrey defaces the third and with their dad it brings up McReynolds very close only the speed of strawberry he looks like he just Lopes look good call Dutch Rennert just beat the throw [Music] so the best with runners at first and third two down and McReynolds at the plate and it's popped up Saxe goes out and Hershiser escape a jam in the first so at the end of one eighteen three Dodgers nothing that's nothing pretty good idea there as to how Ron darling feared against the Dodgers decision he beat them twice what's going all the way once he was relieved in the ninth inning he starts the second I think with a good breaking pitch Marshall out in front of the cannons old one Marshall Shelby and Scioscia in the second inning with those scores [Music] white rain again falling ash a is Marco fights it off and grounded foul outside third are they quickly out in front on two [Music] you can see it right there too rain from about four o'clock on yesterday through the night and drizzling here today [Music] tailing fastball inside and r-truth got around on it very very well Oh tooth pitch is up at end of the cat wanted to that's what happens when you go for Freight your first two games also when your weakness is on the inside part of played but most pitchers most hitters will tell you that when you get two strikes where they look away so you diving and he comes back with a breaking ball the o2 pitch was the purpose pitch try to get him off the plate and get him out with something else Mike Marshall and most of the hits have been on balls away and they've all been hard stuff with exception of one hit off good three into they take a real positive situation oh it's ooh count now you run it back we're a leadoff hitter you don't want to get on the big difference leadoff guy coming on versus getting the first guy out is like 50% of the time he scores 16% it if you get the first guy out inside so watch the walks Andrew darling had gotten ahead o into Marshall becomes the Dodgers for his base runner leading off here in the second inning and it will bring up the foot hitting John Shelby that's a remarkable percentage the difference between getting the first hitter out and and having the leadoff hitter on 34% more he scores I think psychologically - Jim when the first hitter gets on by it by a base hit it's not nearly as bad as when the first hitter has walked seems like it's a gift or more of a gift as I guess any walks are [Music] she'll be at the plate takes a strike delvia a streaky hitter and I guess that would be best illustrated by the fact that he got very hot in bein locked up with a 24 game hitting streak the longest of the National League this season but cool to the first two games old for eight and grounded foul outside first and the cat I think it too John with 128 strikeouts during the season and that I think that's kind of exemplified what kind of strike zone he has a very big strike zone chases a lot of bad but when you throw them strikes you're doing him a favor of course darling wants to keep the ball out of the center of the plate wanted to I think you're very simple definition of pitching Jim certainly applies to John Shelby stay ahead and expand the strike zone that is a great philosophy on fishing [Music] to ensue with war until at first base nobody out second inning no score well even a great hitter like Wade Boggs will expand the strike zone with two strikes now of course he has so much self-confidence he feels he can still hit in that situation he'll take a lot of pitches because he wants to see a lot of the movement on the ball the break on the curveball how the split-finger fastball goes or whatever but most hitters expand the strike zone with two strikes [Music] and it's bring it to so darling when Owen - and lost Marshall and now when Owen - with Shelby and he's three and two disciplined by John that was a good split finger fastball now you've got a case of Marshall at first base without real good speed and a non-contact for him at the plate and so Marshall stays in the pictures ball four and four darling he begins the inning by going oh and two on the first two batters and walking both so the Dodgers had runners at first and second with nobody out and Mike Scioscia is the batter so now with so sure coming up the Mets have to think about the punt Hamilton is on deck so she wants him off at amo to run through the signs again there's Jeffery shortstop at third darling led to Mets pitchers their starters in double plays with twenty and he needs one now and the runners go and it's fouled away off to the left oh and one that's a hit and run that's something you often talk about in spring training and rarely used during the season think about the logic to that play darling has been struggling and now runners are taking off and he has got his best contact hitter up there Mike Scioscia who struck out only 31 times this year such a logical play darling trying to throw a strike after walking to him now he bunt and it's a beauty of the first base line and her name is [Music] Shelby stop two thirds and down a second goes Scioscia so the Mets very much expecting Scioscia to swing away with her name is playing back at first base and then charging and flipping it behind Backman and the Dodgers take advantage and lead one to nothing this is a plane so rarely you'll see a first baseman have to make see a second baseman the short shot sometimes having to do it Hernandez 10 Gold Gloves that's a rarity very difficult play and the reason was I think some Scioscia surprised the way they bunted the ball normally in that situation you bunt the ball down the third-base line and that's where Darlie broke it's just a matter of them the Met did feel being out Fox two times to hit and run on the first pitch and now Scioscia bunting the ball down to Hernandez who normally would be in a shallower depth in that situation so Hamilton is at the plate it scored a single and an error on Hernandez and Hamilton fouls it away to a base hit for Scioscia an error on Hernandez no run batted in and the doctors lead it one to nothing Joey Amalfitano [Music] they squeeze right now more remote than it would be if there were one out with nobody out there are a lot of ways that you can score a runner without having to resort to the squeeze play why ball groundout exactly one way here is a grounder to short a second with Enfield playing back right one in one so there's the Mets alignment they're going to give up another run on the ground ball and actually Jerrod darling would take a look at Davey Johnson it not be real happy what he's seen his pitcher who has had excellent control this year the last couple of years is the average about four walks per per nine innings this year about two and a half walks the first two guys and then is this guy that won 10 Gold Gloves makes an error but you're thinking Ron darling one run you'll give him another run stay away from the beginning even though you're fishing against a guy like Hershiser who's on a hot streak you can't allow them to have a big inning not early in the ball game in these conditions and he walked two after getting a hand on both hitters oh and two - and one account of Hamilton and it's a one-hopper backhanded by Backman that'll score a run so handles and grounds out but Shelby comes in to score and on to play so she advances to third Lasorda loves to squeeze in situations such as this I'm coming here with a runner at third and one out and Alfredo Griffin with the plate think about what kind of out that was by Hamilton not only did he score the run but he pushes Scioscia to third base with this rope to second a nice play by Backman so Hamilton really two objectives there one to score the run for an RBI the other to push Scioscia to third and now the possibility of the squeeze infield plays in and Griffin up there to split away and misses is a big difference in Hamilton grounding at the second as opposed to grounding out to short in that case if he grounds out to short the runner at second probably remains at second even though the run scores by grounding it to the right side as Tim says he does two things then forces the Mets to bring the infield in Dodgers on top to nothing one out breaking pitch is fouled away and the count is on to I'm here to be the first breaking pitch that he has thrown all day so go back to that first game what bait Griffin be able to drive in the second runoff gruppen same situation brought the infield in he hit a ball off his fist that may have been an out to the second baseman because of the infield playing in and looped into right field for the second Dodger run and Hamilton is clearly intentionally tried to do what he did inside-out swing away in account one a two parter Bluffs a throw to third we're stitching in the wind is a lot like sometimes playing golf when it's windy take a look at the nose to pitch split fingered fastball what's this ball kind of just move down and away a little bit outside the strike zone again that's a luxury you have when you have an O and to count but it is not worth to darlings benefit this inning darling bluffing a moon for third a Moffat Amma going through the signs the doctors have have squeezed with two strikes the reason that you're taking more of a chance however in this situation is that you can pitch out and it won't hurt the Mets it's still 2 & 2 it gets to 3 into though watch out and he swings and misses and down he goes so Griffin strikes out Scioscia is still a third and that two-out now and the infield can go back to normal depth is Orel Hershiser comes to the plate this is what I call getting hit her off balance look how he's out on his really on his toes trying to stay back but look at hands come forward body comes forward well before the pitches there Hershiser 1:29 for the season and as we pointed out the other night led the league in sacrifice bunt with 19 which is not applicable here with two out but he's gonna but anyway and fouls it off at the count only one he tried to bunt twice the first game he struck out once trying to bunt with two strikes against white good and he tries to looks like he's he's looking toward first but the fat angle looked like he was trying to bunt the ball down third oh and one and he bunts again foul and the count nothing into I'd be going for the hat trick I think he death Dodgers on top to nothing temperature in the low 40s Tommy Lasorda taking his club east after a game to victory with a series squared at a game apiece darling ahead on two what to do darling had seven wild pitches on the season I'll say you're very apprehensive when you're a catcher back there and you know a pitcher to be effective has to keep the ball down especially the split finger - and - Gary looks on this handcuff don't send opioids every June first I saw the other night rich Gedman got handcuffed by Lee Smith but we're talking a lot more velocity this ball the doll that looks like a hand comes up because of the movement again this is what the wind does today ball will move a little bit more it's like hitting a golf ball and wind and you slice it the slice is or if you hook it at hooks for a looper to shallow right and scrubber there to make the tag but the Dodgers get two in the second and after one of the half lead to nothing Goodyear blimp I would imagine buffeted in this wind but sailing high above a stadium the Goodyear blimp enterprise on this raw day in New York light rain falling to nothing the Dodgers on top at the end of one of the half is Dave Johnson before the game if last night's rain at would eventually benefit one club or the other well I think it might help the Dodgers a little bit in there can give Tudor a couple more days and he was he could probably use that and Hershiser you know he's gonna he's gonna be right on track if we get this one in and Hershiser ran into trouble in the first inning he walked Jeffries and Hernandez but extricated himself from further difficulty a different story though for Ron darling in the second inning is the Dodgers without getting a ball out of the infield scored two runs to nothing l a kind of a double-edged sword they be talking about John Tudor because while it does give him two extra days rest starting tomorrow night he didn't start last night which means that he may be only to start one time during the playoff series and no way he's going to be able to come back on Wednesday for instance after he starts tomorrow night if he goes six or seven innings the tutors gonna pitch tomorrow night and then Lasorda doesn't know about Monday as our Johnson looks at the strike of the Kanto and one he he has four they two choices as far as Monday is concerned he could bring Tim Belcher back on three days rest or he could start Tim Leary who won 17 games during the regular season but struggled down the stretch that's grounded to the right-side charge five sacks that takes care of Johnson one away here at the bottom of the second inning and it will bring up Gary Carter the Dodger brain trust with Rick Dempsey as well Ron perranoski and Bill Russell Friday bill Bueller you're not including Dempsey in that brain present only a former teammate could say the hard Gary Carter grounded foul into the Dodger dugout on the counters old one Rick Dempsey lost a chance to start this afternoon with last night's rain out that's right Sid Fernandez was scheduled to pitch for the Mets and Rick starts against most left-hander as this season please that means his start will be delayed that one is out of play until Monday because what Davey Johnson will do is go with Dwight Gooden tomorrow night in the fourth game and then should Fernandez who who would have pitched a fourth game haven't been played today will be on the mound Monday know when you're getting old is when you're there's your looking look quite good there but you talk to your former teammates and they tell you their sons senior in high school and maybe will go to Stanford no I guess maybe we should include Dempsey in the air there's none to go to Stanford he's got it got it from somewhere couldn't be his wife Joanie star the runway left that I said gee it's gonna go to Stanford once they got it from you and then Ricky knows anything about - oh I talked to John Tudor and he said I don't know how I'm gonna feel haven't thrown since Monday no he had the shoulder problems are at this tropic surgery yeah he said the elbow still bothers him grounded slowly up the line Hershiser makes the tag on Carter going by one on assistant for the second out and with two down to the bases empty Wally Backman will be coming to the plate two out bottom of the second inning two nothing the Dodgers on top of following this game we will have regional action for you as first Tiger makes the tag on Carter college football you'll either see Ohio State against the Indiana or Washington taking on Arizona state following baseball tell you we almost saw a preview of that college football game with Carter going down first I would like to think that he would rather have just kind of backed off and make the throw but when the runner gets by it you don't have enough time to get to the side and make the throw so you do what's not really easy because Carter's a big guy I'll take a look he gets the ball just about when Carter's coming by if he goes to his left he's more or less gonna be in the way to Griffin and Backlund his gun so three up and three down and at the end of two full it remains Dodgers two that's nothing it will be back after this from your local station [Music] radar from the blip and the indication there the showers in the area we do know that with the intermittent rain as we start the third inning Dodgers on top to nothing in Game three and Steve sax leaving off sax Hatcher and Gibson before a frosty crowd at Shea one-on-one sacks popped out in the first inning Steve is 2 for 9 in the championship series [Music] two and one interesting point that Mike Smith brought out in the inside pitches that darling third in the nationally with most home runs given up behind Shane Rowley and Tom browning who was 18 and 5 yet led the National League with 32 home runs that's hit into right field for a base hit so a line single to right by sax his third hit of the championship series the Dodgers second hit of the game first and it will bring up pitcher Hatcher very instrumental in the Dodger victory in Game two replacing Franklin Stubbs and this double coming in the second inning with the score to nothing scoring two and making it for nothing and the Dodgers never looked back Tommy Lasorda getting joy mouths itano's attention down there and Hatcher backing out you can do one of a number of things here and sax now wants to talk to Manny Mota and get his legs a little loose it may have had a cramp there I mean Hatcher Hatcher can hit and run he could bunt you can send sax on a straight steel Tommy's was sorted with a lot of options here Packer did not have a sacrifice all season [Music] and it backs them off and the cat wanted Oh well he handles the bat so well that you Timmy said you have so many options you you can do you don't have to have a straight sacrifice hit the ball behind him course the field is getting a little bit wetter because wetter wet before wet because of this rain so today the worst scenario for the Dodgers is to have this game rained out for four or five innings and lose Hershiser there goes sax it's hammered at and missed and Carter drops the ball so on a hit and run Hatcher doing everything to protect sax swinging in a pitch well above his head and the Dodgers get a break when Carter drops the ball no play at second it appears to be a hit and run mainly because he took about three look oh yeah it was he was stealing he is not going to look and at almost like a and if he did would be evil wait almost till he gets the second base and the 1-1 pitch is grounded to the right side so Hatcher does his job advancing the runner is her name this flips to Darling covering and the Dodgers have a runner at third with one out and Gibson coming to the plate Mickey Hatcher looks like he's using a hatchet to swing at that ball axing down on it and that probably one of the reasons that Gary miss the ball you know that's one of the reasons also that Hatcher hasn't sacrificed all season he handles the bat too well you don't need a sacrifice in that situation and here's an interesting situation right now the Dodger is already leading to nothing the Mets infield was one out and Saxton third they have Johnson back at Short Backman back at second but we'll see if they begin to creep in as the pitch comes to the plate the Mets don't do that though they're playing them back and I think that's the wrong move well it's as simple as this you hit a grounder to short or second the score is three nothing and that means you need four to win at least and again I think Davi may be thinking here's the guy 31 steals if he does get a bass you play him in he gets the base hit at 3 nothing he was going to steal second base and that's grounded to the right side and that's exactly what happened with the infield back back when throws at Gibson but the Dodgers get another run and it makes the score three to nothing I'm not saying it's right by doing that because what happens Gibson also is the type of guy that strikes out allowed 120 strikeouts so you play the infield back you can see the runner you can see right there he hits it to the middle infielders then it's three nothing especially with the world Hershiser on the mound you're not going to get many runs off of him to begin with I mean here's a guys pitch 59 consecutive scoreless innings he gave up two runs to the Mets in the ninth inning of Game one so you're not gonna beat his brains out I really don't say if you ought to have the infield back in that situation I agree Marshall pops it up in foul ground and Gary Carter comes back might have a play and die but the Dodgers get another run in the third and after two and a half it's three nothing Los Angeles Shea Stadium in New York Al Michaels with Jim Palmer Tim McCarver Game three the Dodgers on time three nothing three runs two hits for the Dodgers no runs no hits and one error for the Mets Hershiser works on darling who fouls it away in the count would one darling in the top of the order Mookie Wilson and Greg Jefferies nice batting average by darling three for three the last day to get it to 220 I think it would behoove them to get a hit here to curling 3 to nothing one into again the Dodger run in the top of the third when you examine it sacks that single and then Carter drops the ball at Hatcher swings at a pitch above his head sacks steal second as darling strikes out one away and then the two groundouts netting the Dodgers a third run earlier Davey Johnson both the Dodgers had the advantage because of last night rainout the extra rest for Tudor what a store to think about that well it's hard to say I mean Tudor was ready to pitch yesterday I don't know how well he's going to be this is something that we're going to have to say tomorrow as I said before I don't know where the advantage life I really don't al when you start thinking about a grave doubt game and that the advantage goes with you believe me if most cases that always backfires on you so I would just say right now that we're very very happy that we can care for today ever they get a boo-boo and right now particularly happy because the world Hershiser has a three nothing lead with one out bases empty in the bottom of the third inning he is wasting no time delivering the ball he give a guy like that 300 nose on a roy man he is gonna pitch very very quickly because he knows that he knows what he has to do and the match I mean they really gift-wrapped that Dodger run in the third inning two nothing with a runner at third and one out it Gibson at the plate with the infield back occasionally you have to take a risk and of course there is a risk if he does hit a single through a drawn in and feel he may steal second but it is raining give them another run and I bet makes you relax a little bit on the floor of the mouth well I think the key is with Hershiser pitching and the way the Mets have been hitting the Mets have scored three runs in both games and there's Hershiser is not allowed more than four runs in a game in his last 10 starts [Music] the sorta will definitely enjoy dinner tonight with a victory in team three because he would know not only would it be up in the series two games to one but if it won seven he's got his man back on the mound as Wilson hits it foul off to the left so it's still 2 & 2 one out bases empty bottom of the third inning again you have to place five endings to make it an official game we still have a steady rain but a very light rain the type of rain you can play through as well first huttinger second spread guy is a wild pick that enables Wilson to read and freeze the matter can't strike somebody out with a wild pitch and here's a perfect example the ball about 59 wait so she makes a nice scribe which ball suspends away fro in the 59th consecutive scoreless inning San Diego Padres got on the tenth inning exact fashion that Hershiser had to bear down to take care of the Padres and strained to the man a third to break rotten sales right they're fries at the plate what a doughnut now Wilson 15c 19 to 10 but again with all of the rain yesterday even though the field was covered in the rain so far a very putting infield [Music] second runners at first and second and Jeffries is now 5 for 8 in the playoff and another fastball and it's up at Versailles our sinker baller cannot fix Jeffries there are really any of the Vette hitters again you got to give Jeffries a lot of credit he hits the ball right where it's pitched it's away he goes to left if it's inside he's quick enough at to pull it Tommy Hawk that ball everybody talked about the pressure of the playoffs well obviously Jeffries hasn't felt that yet even though he admitted he was in nervous as he's ever been prior to Game one Hernandez now brothers his first and second and one out Dodgers leading three nothing in the bottom of the third chopper foul oh and one Jeffrey's not only was five hits in the series he's four for five against Hershiser plus a war [Music] [Music] at the wall and the runners retreat so Hernandez gives it a ride that deep left-center field but it stays in the other 371 more whose had talked about before the game that when he usually hits the ball that way he has enough hang time hang time and here you see the swing he drives his fall but he hits it in the air now last year of the live four ball a ball might have gone out you can see right here the ball is up in the air Gibson has time to run under it makes a nice catch sure you really knew where the fence was what are you hung with it for the second out there you fly balls there no routine outs today because you got that wind and rain whipping down on your eyes look up there you'd think there are million balls in the air robbery takes a strike one one thing to point out when Hershiser starts throw a lot of fly balls it means he is not making the pitches that he wants to make many more ground balls than fly ball one point eight percentage was he froze one point eight more flyballs and Eric's ground balls and he does fly balls so when he gets the ball up and you see the ball going in the air he has not thrown the sinker that he wants to throw that was only the second ball hit in the air by the Mets McReynolds popped out of the first inning and Hernandez driving one to left here everything else has been on the ground 1 1 pitch just missing 2 & 1 three straight fast balls inside the strawberry and this ball tailing back over the inside part of the plate that man is really getting shaky now watch his left foot see that's sliding and on Jim that's the worst thing that could happen to a man that's wet now [Music] very very with the clutch double in the ninth inning of Game one comes through again another curveball interesting Lee that's what he hit in the first game [Music] and he did hold Greg Jefferies at third base and even though Jeffery slipped Steve's tax was too far away to throw up on Andy there's a big difference with a runner at first base on a as opposed to a double down the West and you could see how soggy in the outfield was that bulges died as Marshall retrievers that grevilles popped down in the first hitting the Mitch was runners at second and third and to our outside to get full rise to the end in essence Geoffrey's on his way to third Palazzo going up the line that's he the reason that Jackson broke behind Jeffries was the other throw all the way across the gun take too big a chance - oh Fitch taken for a strike and again tacky play in this shipping was the strikeout on the wild pitch which has given the mentioning X drought and they've been able to capitalize two out one in three one Dodgers in the count is 2 & 1 on the crenel McReynolds looking for his first hit in the series he's old for aid and it's 2 & 2 that was hittable there that was a fat part of the plate fastball it's interesting what you said about the curveball - strawberry - and one I think I'm sure that her oral pick well it just trick them with a curveball but he threw it right where Strawberry likes it which is down and in so he did fool a girl strong enough he throws the curveball to the Kevin McReynolds the ball is not going to be coming into us to be going away somewhat of a more effective pitches as you look at the footing and what you talking about Timmy the front foot is the most important not to mention of course to put you push off with because if you land it slip because it affects your control we plant that front foot and you have something to really land on and be able to control the ball good slips convinced by three or four inches that's enough breaking pitch got of the Civic Reynolds is old for nine with the Mexican to run in the third and at the end of three Dodgers three Mets won the National League Championship Series brought to you by Bud Light everything else is just the life [Music] day Stadium in New York where is it the in summer one we needed temperature in the 40s here's Jefferies again heading toward third-base watch Sam for LA so the third-base coach move up the line toward home plate now he disappears from your picture what he's doing is see what develops on the right side with Steve sac he would have sent Greg Jeffries had sacks bobble the ball that's the luxury you have where the ball hit to the right side of the field that you don't have with the ball hit down the left-field line doubling a runner to third base but he had the hold of a third and he was trained to there with McReynolds struck out now Shelby to start the fourth inning wanted though the couch Shelby Scioscia and Hamilton 3-1 Dodgers here in Game three one and one game being played in a very light rain the forecast calls for improvement this afternoon which is not good news necessarily for the Mets because once you play five innings it is official though in the history of baseball there has never been a rain shirt postseason game it out of play there have been games that have started and have been postponed before they were official but no game as Shelby comes back to get a new bat no bean was ever official in a range short fashion in other words every game in the history of postseason baseball that has had a final score has been a nine in the game or an extra Decatur - to fit is blacked into centerfield for a base in so Shelby is on starts the fourth inning with a single to center it will bring up Mike Scioscia first one reason that your Mike Scioscia you don't have a range or it gave the postseason with this much at stake if you have a rain delay you would wait until midnight meanwhile we can tell you that tonight the American League Championship Series continues Oakland eight o'clock Eastern Time five o'clock Pacific time Easley two games to nothing after their fear of winds at Fenway Park and Bob Welch works for Oakland tonight against Mike Boddicker she'll be a first base John Goodspeed stole 16 bases this season and the the soldiers outside ball one wanted Oh again it's another situation where Tommy the sort has a lot of options right-hand fun it's steel he can use that hole you're looking at right there on the right side he has a contact hitter amazing thing what a frustrating game it is here's darling he's trailing three to one they've only hit two balls hard facts and single by Shelby you could read Lasorda's lips he said one ball and no strikes that would imply reminding himself that hitters ahead in the count and it's a good time for a hit run and against OSHA a good contact hitter at the plate if you don't watch the Dodgers that much when you see the big burly catcher you figure well here's a guy which a lot of home runs and strikes out a lot he's the exact opposite it's very few home runs and almost always makes contact never in his professional career has he struck out more than he's walked in 13 years [Music] wanted to [Music] [Music] nobody out Shelby goes and it's a hamstring little nubber back to the box and darling throws a mouse though Scioscia grounds to the mound was Shelby going on the pitch John now in scoring position with one out and it will bring to the plate Jeff Hamilton take another look at the pictures without a hitch first aren't dark zooming done and brawn Carling dark darling I can't hear whatever the pitcher is pushing off and you can see him slip what is his name - Wayne darling yeah thought he tore his rotator cuff it's easy to speak in cold weather anyway Hamilton is at the plate what it does it's a little I was going to say part of our job job is broadcasters is to bring you the feeling at the bottom part yeah it's still possible today the feeling I'll tell you what the right word if it's the feeling of the Winter Olympics here's the 1o pitch hit in the air to left field and right to the Grendel's for the second down as Hamilton goes down to first wringing his hand don't only remained a second he really was there he's blowing on it he's got his blood boiling sometimes you forget you got your glove on you blowing on your hands doesn't do any good but he hit that ball off the end of the bat as we said earlier you'll see a lot of balls hit off the end of the bat and there it is right here a little looper to left field and Jeff going down to first base just bringing that right hand right there two down now Tigers on top three one and Alfredo Griffin comes to the plate vibrating back to the he B's in the bet want to know the count on tripping a Dodger YZ World Series would reunite some old friends Alfredo would go back to play against the team once became Mike Davis lost all of the Dodgers Jay Howell Bob Welch of the aid will face his ex-mate well worked against Boston tonight in Game three of the American League Championship Series Tim Belcher came from the age Rick Honeycutt went the other way and Dave Stewart as a former Dodger Dave smoked Stewart traded to Texas for Rick Honeycutt then Honeycutt goes to Oakland for Tim belts right and both win in the playoffs Wednesday doing two on Griffin this is how a previous that bat sets up your fastball he struck him out with a fork well last time it looks like he's still looking for that and he's late on the fastball Joe a guy breaking pitches or the ring into naland rhythm Griffen used to have the reputation of swinging at anything for here I think it's 608 he is bass he walked eight times this year 28 and the three to the Griffin three and a half it's the Dodgers three and the Mets water now let's see if coming through the oag that's American Airlines flight 603 nonstop to Cincinnati snack service sold-out first-class bring up these in coach and away they go there may not be any empty Monday night when we had it a little rearranging up some schedules the grad crew here at Shea headed by Pete Flynn rearranges the infield here and I shot from Shea Stadium looking out toward LaGuardia Airport normally a games at Shea Stadium are interrupted by airplanes taking off over the stadium and stop the attendant noise but with bad weather rainy weather the winds shift until the takeoffs are going in the other direction there it is so close LaGuardia is Desha bottom of the fourth inning Tigers on top 3-1 Howard Johnson still hitless in the series and still hitless in postseason in his career and as you can see there strawberry McReynolds and Johnson forming the trio for the Mets the first team with three players to have 20-plus homers and 20-plus runs batted in in a season and the interesting thing here 20 steals and a season the interesting thing here is that two of those fellows McReynolds and Johnson are combined old 4:17 in the playoffs thus far and now old 418 as Johnson hits it down to Hatcher unassisted one away here in the bottom of the fourth inning and it will bring up Gary Carter take a look at Hershiser here's his breakdown through three I think Jim probably a little more pitching a few more pitches that he would normally throw of course he did have the control problem back in the first inning but that's a perfect sample there hojo got a good pitch to hit - and Oh threw him a sinker he still hit the ground ball Gary Carter takes high ball one don't you know you're going back to be when you get the pitch you want and you still don't hit it then again it shows you how good a pitcher that fit your Hershiser is one hopper Hambledon takes care of Carter to God now with the bases empty in the fourth inning and wally backman will come to the plate that's the thing with a guy like Hershiser to when he has a three-run lead it's now a two-run lead of course but when he has that lead he can afford to throw the fastball and breaking ball that's a great luxury when you have a good velocity the good movement on the ball and it goes down and don't have to worry about the fly ball the line drive it just hit the top of the ball and results in a lot of ground balls nut your infielders do the work backwood takes a strike on the Catalan one before he made that pitch Hershiser was yelling at Mickey Hatcher the first baseman to move in just in case Backman thought about bunny well that is something that Hershiser actually Mickey Hatcher talked about he said I really feel comfortable at first face but I don't feel comfortable with the pitchers I don't know you know what their range is so he says I like to move in he didn't try to do that with Tudor this is how Tudor heard his hip tutor said no you just play back I'll get to first base he had a big attack play and injury resulted join one we have been critical a few guys trying to bunt with two outs and nobody on Kirk Gibson and Howard Johnson at games one and two it's a totally different situation with Backman now Backman is a singles hitter plus the pictures up next so if you've been here you want to clear the pitcher and most of your hips are singles anyway for the guy like Gibson trying to bunt with two out nobody on here's a guy who can pop the ball out of the ballpark and the same thing holds true for Johnson while he backed with a lot of grounders he hits the ball in the air it's usually going to end up in somebody's glove he has to bunt past the hit ground ball then last year he was second to marbella win with the best ground ball ratio he talked to Phil Robertson the hitting instructor that's what he wants him to do hit grounders his fly balls are potty now Fredo Griffin ranges to his left throws Backman out and a 1-2-3 inning at the end of four still Dodgers three best one back at Shea after this word from your local station [Music] fifth inning at Shea Stadium as orel hershiser leaves off for the Dodgers was game two lasats on 3 1 and m3 and her shines are trying to cut his way on darling takes care of him for the out so again we mentioned earlier Hershiser with 19 sacrifices you know he can bunt he figures he might as well try to get a board feeding off at the inning by bunting his way on but too sharply back to darling one out let all major league pitchers or at least nationally pitchers last or second baseman Steve with 19 hits did you look at Ron darling really not too bad a pitching count 15 pitches an inning doesn't seem like he's had great command the split-finger today I think the biggest difference that I've seen with him over the year is that he has had that great split finger fastball which makes his other pitches more effective Steve sax styles at off on one one of the big reasons that Ron had a tough time developing that split finger fastball is because of the length of his fingers his fingers are very short and for the most part it takes a pitcher with long fingers to throw that splitter one two there it was effective Mel stottlemyre the pitching coach he talks about he's with his finger so wide it's almost become more of a fork ball that's the big difference if you really get your fingers split it's a forkball and if it just barely split it's more of a split-finger Luke the shallow right that goes back when to take care of that darling now and the groove he has sit down five in a row and repaired each of the last nine and it brings up Mickey Hatcher who has grounded out twice oh for two today and he's one for five in the playoffs through our faces empty wanted though the couch to the hole and through for a basis and that's for hitchnow off Ron darling after with a two-out single and it brings to the plate Kirk Gibson who is gold for two today and old for 8 in the series it's almost like a good news/bad news scenario darling knows that he has good stuff but he's trailing 3 to 1 he also knows when he throws the ball in the middle of the plate he's going to give up some hits and that's exactly where that pitch was to Hatcher at you're too good a hitter to 93 on the year to get a ball in the middle of plate not hit hard [Music] Gibson rats one into centerfield for a base hit Hatcher was too out around second and on his way to third as the throw comes back in to Johnson so with two out the Dodgers now have runners at first and third and one of the interesting matchups in a way in the series coming in were the two left fielders McReynolds and Gibson that's the first hint were either now Mike Marshall who's been a big man through the first two games today he is walked and fouled out and 361 in similar situations as this during the ring of the season two out and in scoring position just missing Carter was living away in the picture inside ball one you know why he was moving away because get a Gibson at first base Gary was trying to set himself up to throw and a lot of times trying to do that you take something away from your pitcher to another town the out Gary is leaning forward when you're leaning forward as you catch you like that that means you're over anticipating the runner at first base trying to steal and a lot of times that can be to your detriment because of your coming up and taking strikes away from your pitcher you won't get that border line cause it's right I can't believe though they're gonna throw through you just can't afford to give up another run Gibson it has only been thrown out four times all year I don't know Jim I don't think Hatcher runs that well anyway in there and the countess to it a lot the big thing is I don't know whether Gibson's going to be as apt to run right here with Marshall up there and Marshalls driven in with as you saw had three hits and five and bet with two outs and a runner in scoring position absolutely so he may just play a passive game he has so far yeah I would think they'd want to take the bat out of Marshalls hands and this circumstance Gibson's going to go though and the pitch is grounded to short Johnson is up with it throws the first dammit as the Tigers leave two in the fifth at the end of four and a half 3-1 Los Angeles Jay Stadium huh a lot of fun guys here at the top of the it may be the ski jumping freestyle skiing right absolutely but one thing this team becomes official after this happening because we will have Flay's 5a light rain falling but again the forecast calls were improvement supposed to be clearing up later this afternoon we said there any difficulty getting nine in today part me out but in some respects it's lighter now than it was an hour and a half ago here's darling leading off of the bottom of the fifth inning taking a strike in the count oh and one darling Wilson and Jeffries wanted one account tomorrow night game I'm game for John Tudor gets the start for Los Angeles is quite good for the mess and again because of the rain out last night 15 push back Monday after the dude Eastern Time what interesting third game third umpire all different strike zone here's the Joe West has a little bit more of a Hiram strike zone that for National League umpires hammers at it doesn't get it down he goes so darling strikes out for the second time that's four strikeouts now for Hershiser and there of course is Goodson on the left and strawberry on the right now with one out of the bottom of the fifth inning and Wolfie Wilson coming to the plate [Music] that's strike out he's over to was on a wild pitch in the third inning and he has scores the vets only run today hits it down the line in left field having trouble bags one for the old-time highlight-reel right there Kirk Gibson slipping and sliding and somehow unbelievably making the catch I didn't think he had a prayer if he was going down that's a credit to his athletic ability right there and youth does somehow is the key word here out you can see for yourself somehow he keeps going I mean stumbling falling I didn't think he'd get his clap back up look at the concentration look at him what's the ball into the glove last night during that rain delay talking about hit being a receiver in Michigan State and he was talking about the fact that and I mentioned I said it really seemed to meet you how to learn how to play this game and he said I didn't have to do that football but there if you don't you're not a receiver if you don't watch the ball into your hands and right there he did it into his glove he stayed inbounds touchdown two-out and Jeffery at the plate upon further review the play stands fly out the left it's drop Leon a hosta hacker this game is now old fishel that's gone in order to the sixth we go in Game three is the Dodgers 3 and the best one but National League Championship Series brought to you by Stroh's and Stroh light fire breed for smooth consistent taste stroeve's is spoken here [Music] Kirk Gibson it's going to be a great feeling you come back to the dugout and describe the play to all of your teammates oh there he was reaching back remember he he came in with that hamstring pool having bothered him for a month he just wanted to make sure everything was all right tell you when Kirk came back in the dugout who approaches him but Mickey Hatcher who's a head of the stuntmen and that was some stunt you turn it told in left field that's what the Dodger extra men have named themselves yeah hat you wanted to know hey who was you double on that play sensational - I guess that name came about when down in Vero Beach from Spring Training they wouldn't vote and let those guys practice on the same field with the regulars oh they think we better stick together they said also we're pretty anonymous darling behind three balls no strikes on Shelby starting the sixth inning and Shelby walks on four pitches so Shelby's had a perfect day who walked in a single darling has walked three the two other walks both came back to burn apiece for luck Marshall and Shelby in the second inning and both scored and that the Dodgers got their third run in the third when sax singled stole second and scored on two ground balls to begin recall when the Mets were down to nothing they opted to play the infield back with sacks a third and one out of Gibson grounded out and that made it three nothing so shad the flame takes outside ball one wanna go interesting thing about a baseball on a cold day it seems like it becomes more slippery becomes colder you know all your pitches unless you throw a spit ball are thrown using the scenes in some way tougher to control [Music] the only advantage is there's the high humidity gives you a little bit more feel more moisture in the hands Sylvio at sixteen steals during the regular season and darling behind a few balls in those strikes on social the one thing baby Johnson did tell us before the game last night is that David Cohen would be available for a couple of innings this afternoon he's expected to start next Tuesday night in Los Angeles but don't be surprised if you see David Cone up and throwing if the Mets need a middle reliever [Music] three a dog he will begin to stir around very shortly in the New York bullpen only way that Johnson diffused call as if the game is closed and the boat is ringing in the pan in there for a strike at the count of three and one they'll have to take the top off the bullpen mound the starter [Music] [Music] darling sending kill me back [Music] and more seriously and there's the ground for removing the tarp in the mess man there goes Shelby depictions of strike the throw to second there's a strike for too late so she'll be with a stolen base and the divers with a man in second and nobody out and a three and two count you seeing the end result of an incredible jump by Shelby would give you an idea of how slow the track is the throw almost beats them as you look at the tank a POJO reaching in as you see Shelby's feet already on the bag an excellent throw but too good at jumping and that's popped up Gary Carter comes back towards a temporary seat but as well back into the permanent seat as well still three and two let's take a look at Shelby he is off and John Carter up with a good throw or thieves steal it only thrown them throw two runners out with darling on the mound and Carter catching this year it's really hard to tell him it appeared he made a good throw get the jump is so substantial you can't really tell if it's Carter or impact it's just darling let him get too big leave by the way again still 3 & 2 you know the Dodgers now have activity in the bullpen now Mahindra P Mia is up you would think maybe just getting him a little work he's a setup man way Hershiser is going you would figure he'd continue on with Orel but maybe there's a little method to the shortest madness here associate hits a flyball to right field hanging his second - Shelby but he's not going anywhere is strawberry makes the catch you know I'm just thinking with the faithless toward an adjutant bullpen if he knows he gets the Hershiser spot of this inning he is a chance for a big inning he has a chance to blow the game open it could be in the back of his mind that he would think about going to his channel and then of course if you've got to bring Hershiser back on three days rest he will have pitched that much less this was speculation some food for thought I don't know the recession that if they would win today and then the Mets come back and win three in a row he has arrested ace for the final ballgame so it presents a lot of this at least he's giving himself the option here because it down to the number 7 spot of the batting order in Hamilton so Tommy could be forced into a situation where he's got a he's got two on and two out or he could have the face as well than one up here first time before the moment well they'll feel good to Doug at the point you make is certainly valid because pain is not just up and throwing I mean it's raining it's cold he's up there for a purpose right down right he's giving the sort of the option right I mean giving himself the option is what it amounts to for instance if the bases are loaded in one out if Hamilton gets on and Griffin walks as something of that nature then you use the pinch-hitter probably otherwise Vania has no business of being up absolutely one and oh the cow by the way and it's one at one so Hamilton hitting gear with shelving at second base and one out of the six inning Tigers on top three two one a lot of people think that when a ball hits the mask that it doesn't hurt let ball is spinning and believe me it could twist your face in all sorts of distorted [Music] one a-two and you know that firsthand experience certainly do four decades of beat contorted sixth inning three one dodgy and the 1 2 pitch coming to Neverland you are too you have to give Ron darling a lot of credit I mean awful conditions in clubs and weather and he does not appear to have great command of his pitches yet he is still trying to do what he has to do which is make perfect pitches and sometimes he's been able to [Music] and it's throwing it too we're hoping it second one out one thing they may be said about Gary Carter he does give you a good target he said one of the most important things to talk about Ron darling is picking up that target it seems like it's such an assumed thing well when a right-handed pitcher throws to a right-handed batter usually you pick up the hitter first but you really do have to concentrate on the glove a slanting rain falling in the 3-2 pitch is ball as far as I'm concerned this is an official game sixth inning the Dodgers on top 3-1 Stottlemeyer and Johnson sure stopped the first danger for the moment we'll come out on deck as Alfredo Griffin comes to the plate and the campaign is still throwing in the bullpen Griffen place a darling strikeout victim today 1 for 9 in the series oh I dormouse putana looking back into the dugout for a sign from Lasorda and that sign is get a hit so the cover a hitter at the plate Hershiser who is on deck has those 73 pitches to this point and again pain is still throwing in the bullpen and we'll see what the sorter decides to do next with Dodgers at first and second and one out of the six and Hershiser took a look back into the dugout and see what Tommy wants to do and he'll come up this is one of those situation to the regular season there would be no question that Hershiser was hit but in post season you got to think about the whole panoply he got second-guessed the little the other night for bringing in his ace reliever and the men and Hershiser comes off mania sits down in the bullpen here he is he brings in how with 21 saves through 26 saves to come in to get one out and everybody says you should have left him in Versailles er hits it off the foot of a lawsuit oh no so he's alright obviously pretty good infielder in his time when I bonus baby with the New York done that's right back in 1954 and that was the age when if you sign for more than four thousand dollars the big-league club used to have to carry you I believe for two years right Harmon Killebrew was in that position so was Joey Amalfitano oh and to Sandy Koufax a believers in that yep position also Brooklyn with the Lafayette High School Duffy has been a giant week well Dodger [Music] [Music] and Hershiser fouls it back out of play and still owe it to matter of fact that's the way I stayed the big leagues my first year yes 66-65 you could pretend I've never take one guy and and where you could protects many as you want but you could send out one guy your entire minor-league organization trying to cut down on large bonuses a couple of years earlier they have given Bob Bailey about two hundred thousand dollars to sign with with the Pirates Pittsburgh Pirates think 61 the walkthrough the Hershiser so he struggles through the six but though the Dodgers to get darling until three worn away [Music] Shea Stadium in New York Al Michaels with Jim Pomerance in the car became three of the National League Championship Series Goodyear blimp hovering high above Shea Stadium as we intend to go to the bottom of the sixth City and in between innings Orel Hershiser who thinks it's a beer league game this guy you talk about loose what playoff pressure he did say that he wants the ball the big games and this is not simply good at the playoff game but if you're sitting with any we're gonna pitch tomorrow night win tonight or just after and of course it's the same thing quite good and he wants to see his team come back and score some runs who makes it more relaxed when he goes out there she's Hernandez right the bottom of the sixth and we thought oh my very McReynolds Aurel talks about how he the minor-league system he was more of a suspect in the process why one and one and we talked about the list or de influence the other night the nicknaming of Versailles were pulled on his approach [Music] the six inning with a signal it's the first time the Mets have had to leave off and it brings up Darryl Strawberry that's the difference in the game so far and that's event the leadoff runner on and the Dodgers in four of six and at two of those fourth they came in to score tensity her size in space right there but when you're two in one [Music] strawberry takes a strike in the Dodger bullpen we'll get busy again and this time for a different reason Lasorda had it busy to give himself an option first time the bets have started the bottom of the sixth inning with a Hernandez single strawberry at the plate to count as one at one tinea up again and report lefty throwing groaning 3/3 mentioned before strawberry hurting with the curveball earlier in this game and in Game one in the ninth inning so he is stuck with a fastball let's see if he comes back inside with a fastball yes sir and it hits the left field he's rounding second fell down got up broke him in two shacks with strawberry sliding into second Steve decided to throw back to third and again Hernandez tried to dive into the bag in quicksand Hernandez had the right idea by wanting to go to third and now he holds up too late the throw goes into second by the time he comes to third he crawls into third base they have him biasing to the links of the finger and Hambleton takes the bag away from with his foot enough of it anyway so the divers get a fake break strawberry and second with one out and McReynolds at the ground or the handle Vinnie looks Kluber at that and here comes Lasorda [Music] you know firsthand city please right when is love in his chest that kind of control right and Bob Davis in the second base on fire coming in to tell the sorta he didn't have possession of it he cradled it [Music] here it is one more time [Music] he caught the ball it was grasped firmly to his chest but he never had control it's sorted out squirt it out till he gathered his boat it was bare hand right as the grundles crosses the bag effort by hatchet [Music] or we apart but a big Bugaboo for the doctors down the stretch in September was defense and first aid here master of course is a part-time first baseman having trouble digging balls out that was in between house cops are the ones closer to you those in-between hop said land somewhere in the torso area those who really tough to handle Johnson at the plate strawberry at second thank Reynolds at first and it's grounded down the shack the drifted one back to first only because the grass is so wet that ball gets there a lot more quickly this actually turned a 4-6-3 so they can only get the four from the in again still alive also a great slide by McReynolds in the second base now talk see how oppressive he comes in grifters going to have to jump over him right there I'm going to get as much on the throw good speed by Hojo [Music] with two out runners at first and third and Gary Carter coming to the play three $1 / - today [Music] [Music] for animation on the basis Hernandez my first face and Carter going to right-field just as unusual but a handful of times all season [Music] I've had them on there quiet whistle [Music] now Dave Magadan has come on if Paxman prolongs beginning negative or if something else they've just sent Magadan out there with a bullpen busy and mcdowell getting ready to throw bees they use the lawn darling standing out in the rain so it could be a decoy possibly if something else they want darling back in the and back when it's a gravel sorta still over than at all with actor ring could see the lead evaporate [Music] surely applicable rule by Hamilton but the right side of the infield offensively at birth the Dodgers because of his slowly Steve sax is playing now Hatcher does what his instincts tell birth not a very good defensive first base position for the Dodgers where their stuff to our hacker [Music] take another look from the right-field Saxons right behind that ball for the third out for in a single in the bullpen so darling works six McDowell will come into the set [Music] sometimes the nature of the way the game is played the conditions under which it is played and I think this is one of the musical conditions and for three runs on there last to run from the Circle three ground ball the ball hit by PacSun off the glove of hatchet which is something you all those different see and a big grin from Salomon taking all the way back and it looks into trying three in one here's something that pal said today these it also could be that it looks like her skies a little bit out of sync the reason as what burrito hit hard and that's the leadoff hit by Hernandez left by strawberry usually you don't get a reprieve when you make the base running blunder like Hernandez did first what set that up was Gipson slipping and thinking he could go to third so here was Terry [Music] negative the very tough he hits the ball were so if first I surprised too to follow the sinker away bringing food to us the runners are going partner from second first they are often the pitch is grounded and handles in and Hamilton packs harder for the force so this bizarre [Music] so after a while bottom of the six and by the way a Darryl strawberry's wall they give him a single Gibson got an error on that play allowing strawberry to go to second that was the play that ended with her name is falling down and being thrown out a third so in the inning two runs four hits and two Dodger errors and a 3-3 tie as we go to the seventh inning it Iranian brutally cold Jay Stadium in New York temperatures still in the mid 40s Game three this Therese even at a game apiece the game tied 3-3 in the seventh inning team fly Roger McDowell to the mound for the New York Mets so darling will get no decision after yielding three runs and five hits through six and its sax Hatcher and Gibson coming up in the top of the seventh or so many things to mull over and that with the 6th inning every little thing was back to five including Howard Johnsons force play grounder grass slowing at Davin and McReynolds helping to eliminate any possibility of a double-play with a hard slide at second background or factories love the one thing that a slow ground ball will allow it will allow the runner to get down on top of the shortstop of the second baseman and take him out and that was a big play in that inning here's the ball Johnson hit with one out and runners in first and second watch the slide by McReynolds and Alstead the grass holds up the ground ball allowing mccredle's to get down and take out Alfredo Griffin that brenell-- slipped a little bit out of the base line but as long as you can touch second base brings you back to her shasha's consecutive scoreless innings with Brett Butler out of the baseline and Paul Runge who is umpiring today a third base was the man who said he slid out of the base line and enabled that streak to continue so the game now in McDowell's hands in the 7th inning 2 and 1 the count on defect one of the great singers very few breaking balls great fielder it's a great field or even conditions like this because normally he will land in a perfect fielding position ready to go left to right only get a good idea of how a ballsy hatchet just watch the trajectory of some of his pitches I mean if it looks like it's about a foot your job as a hitter is to try to lay off that but it looks so tempting even when you hit it you hit the top of the ball actor wanna know the count guys in this situation will tell you to move up in the box try to get the ball before it sinks and these good sinker ballers just start making the balls down and when sinker ballers retired their sinkers a lot better right and Roger McDowell tired he's had about three hours sleep because he's been at the hospital with Karen McDowell he gave birth to their first child yesterday two down with a new pop working here in the seventh and he's the pitcher of record and here comes Gibson whose 1 for 3 today and 1 for 9 the Missouri an interesting thing what you said Jimmy here's a lowball hitter and what Nick down and even though McDowell knows he's a lowball hitter his strength is the sinker if he throws him Feld high pitches and he's pitching really good to the benefit of Kirk hip and so what he'll do is just make him swing it sinkers that are a little bit lower than he'd like it and the result should be a ground ball sinker ball pitcher it's a dangerous assignment when they have to pitch to gets [Music] as you said a lowball hitter to get it down an end he can hit it as far as anybody and here he is trying to punish a deliverer I know Marshalls going good and you want him to have a chance at bat but not when you have homerun capabilities there two outs that's the second time Kirk has tried to bunt with two outs and nobody nobody on and here it is again I mean certainly he has a chance to steal second base if he does get on granted but the odds are better for him to hit an extra base especially against the so like so says Frank Smith but this is a game of abortion right I'll tell you what her kids were fun off me I would go up kissing but is right I get for hug if you've always been a little bit so - yes the point your way I mean you know here you are in a tie ballgame you want the homerun hitters bunny he's doing the attacker he really is to our faces at thee and Gibson it's a flyball to Center [Music] to the six and a half to three that's three but it's so funny how this one turns around you know Lasorda is dying to if he can get fresh eyes or out of the game if they can a rally and score a couple of runs and that's why he attained eeeh in the bullpen and in the best of circumstances he might have had a 4 to 1 or a 5 to 1 or a 6 to 1 lead and he have a more well rested Hershiser but it doesn't work out that way he has to leave him in and now the game is tied as we go to the bottom of the seventh inning he's got to leave him in for two reasons number one is his best pitcher number two he nicknamed a bulldog Bulldogs don't leave in this type of weather Mookie Wilson at the bottom of the seventh inning two windows account Wilson Jefferies and Hernandez in a 3-3 tie strike good one that's an interesting thing you want to ready for Game seven but on the same hand you want to get the games done that's the dilemma yes that's a strike and the count to ensue but you can see when you get a check swing on a 2-1 fastball in the seventh inning that's an indication of how well he has continued to throw he's his brother he's throwing as well now as he was the first inning [Music] do it to Dodger bullpen active again it's like Jesse Orosco is up now whenever you see a Roscoe or Ricky Horton up you think Hernandez and strawberry are coming up in that inning and that's the case here in the south and their thing is going with them as well [Music] that brings up a good point a lot of people have suggest the Davey Johnson something we really haven't touched on it if you separated Fernandez and strawberry you may not have make them as susceptible to left-handed pitching sandwich McReynolds in between exactly Davey said I'm not sure that Daryl wouldn't take that as maybe something that he would not like it filled it as a demeaning act they moved him into the number four spot last year to bolster his confidence and he certainly did that and for that same reason he doesn't want to take him out of the four spot therein lies the dilemma yep three and two I the thing to look at is and you have to do that at the 732 a pretty good pitch except that all day long get bought back it's not to Joey this said pitch he has not given Hershiser the low pitch take a look right here look at the glow move it off the plate he tries to frame it talking about Scioscia Wilson who does not walk a lot makes it football for I'd say it's an inches he he talked about framing it whenever a catch it turns the glove over to the ground an umpire a lot of time thinks that's an indication that it's too low and that's what so she did in like a pizza pan he turned it to his left had the webbing facing the ground and then probably why didn't get the call want to know for Lazo sniffing out the side now Davey Johnson Stern for the options tact hitter ground ball pitcher good Bunter runner wilson 15 feels during the wreck of the year than charges from third Jeffrey squares picked away [Music] this is where you might think you're topping the sword is getting tired Beckham wolf control average a little bit over two walks per nine innings he knows Jeffrey's body at least he squared around and he still can't throw us that's a pretty good education but in foul and the count is two and one bat-ball yes really helped him out judge for yourself to a no is just a ball appeared to be yeah there's also a she said to me that's the ball you see it's up by your eyes and whether you're bunting or hitting and you think you can sacrifice especially on a ball away and especially if you're a self-confident young man like Greg Jeffords nobody on two atomic town Jefferies has a lot of things going for him about the only thing he doesn't have going for his experience that face running in the second game Wilson goes and it's talked down to Hamilton over the Hampshire for the odd so with a runner going Jeffrey's chopping it's a third for the app and Wilson now at second with one gone and uh comes Keith Hernandez [Music] it run and you've got to put the ball in play preferably on the ground and a good piece of hitting by Greg Jeffery he is responsible for putting the ball the punt was on to the first three pitches [Music] first base open they're gonna walk pee robbery up next Orosco still throwing in the bullpen and we'll see what Lasorda does here the funny thing is they went out and they got Rick port in August from the White Sox for one reason to work in critical situations but Horton struggled in September so they effect now they're going to a Roscoe lefty against Lefty in these types of situations if that's what they're gonna opt for here perranoski goes to the mound [Music] they may be talking about how to pitch strawberry to or how they want to pitch him yeah first time up he threw the sinker away and he ground out to short cooked him for a double last time threw him another sinker and he flared into left field for a single that sinker was in fact though I think they're going to try to work Strawberry inside and not try to waste the pro ball away go right to the week see [Applause] DeCoteau for 10 right want to put the just give you some options outside [Music] but the interesting thing about the way the Dodgers defense strawberry they are playing to pull center fielders over in right-center yet they're gonna pitch them away so she sets up outside it was Darryl Strawberry he's walked intentionally twice this season once by Whitey Herzog to the Cardinals with first and third and one out in the 11th on a Monday night game and the next series Jim Leyland of the Pirates walking in the sixth inning first and third do it rarely this season has Hernandez been walked to get the strawberry in any season in any season that's right but particularly this season since strawberry the last two years has become such a dominating offensive glare three three with one out in the seventh Reynolds Hitler's to the series hit the sack the Griffon won takes it out on double-play so they get it strawberry to hit into a DP on a 3-1 pitch teetering on the brink Hershiser works his way out of a seventh inning Jam with the pitchers best buddy yes and how does he do it throws him a sinker away Darrell tries to pull it results.the ground ball to sax Griffin turned it and here's the key of the play right here Mickey Hatcher who trapped that ball earlier comes up with it for the final out excellent what that was a terrific play by Mickey Hatcher that in-between hop whenever that hop ends up right around the waist you know you have to have softer hands that was right around the knees tough hop good play Haley going a wet feel you don't know if the ball is gonna skid come up stab it in the rain and the cold that on the cloth to who oh and one on market leading off the eighth and it's quickly on to McDowell the head on the dr. cleanup hitter who is over 2 plus a walk today and box of Ghana protection strikeout number two for McDowell who has come out of the bullpen to retire all four many faiths and it will bring up John Shelby just take a look at how much this ball goes down and this is the third consecutive sinker diving normally you see a fish like that I reminds me of Gaylord Perry and it was illegal for him to be able to have this ability serious elbow injury had surgery Pittston only three games and professional ball in 1983 three that was the year of his surgery what at one when he does it is the way he opens up gets his shoulder closed he's going towards home plate he really opens up it allows them to get his really his body going to his left and his arm going the other way to get the great loop and allows the ball to sink and like that like Hershiser that overhanded sinker is the toughest on a hitter because when a pitcher drops down a sinker becomes much more readable the one's thrown from over the top very difficult to pick up she'll be gone three strikeouts for McDowell and in hitting in two-thirds and it will bring up Mike Scioscia there he was before the game in Cleveland Brown Hellmuth no idea where he got that well it is football weather yeah look like Dowell loves he's the guy who loves to give you a hot foot which is not a bad idea today instead he doesn't the guys that are dressed though wanted on the count on soldier [Music] mcdowell at his career it's not a picket line going back to 1986 wanting it [Music] very bad September yes Stottlemeyer he said because the seeker was thinking a lot of pitches up in the strike zone they have not been today though and he backs up by Backman associate chubs in a second so he truly is as good a fielding picture as you'll see in baseball but that's neutralized by wet grass and a big break for the Dodgers first picture we saw today Ron darling Davey Johnson said he had a short stop vent ality in other words get the balls and try to make play at any time watch him slip this is where he makes a mistake he thinks he can make the play from his knees it doesn't I would imagine Tommy Lasorda is going to have a pinch runner for Mike Scioscia you're in the 8th inning a tie ballgame you can't take a chance on a face hit you can't pull for a hit and then not have anybody to run here right who was added to the postseason roster added in the sense that he became eligible by his insertion into the 24 man postseason roster for the purpose of hate running and also because he's a very fine defensive outfielders they've tried to rotate the lead in the late innings so Gonzales comes in to run which means Dempsey will come in to catch and Hamilton comes up with two on we're two out and debate on the eighth inning I'm sure you went through it but he would not you know it's the one of those thing you hit yourself in the head you said I shouldn't have done that right but if you don't think you're gonna make the play in the first place you won't have done it and it's a very logical thought hitless in the series he is old for six in the three games you might say what a bad break for the Mets well this has been a game of badbrakes seems like the team with the toughest breaks is going to lose and the total is identical one and one [Music] got jollies the go-ahead run at second base and it's 2 and 1 on handled it and in the Dodger bullpen as you look at Stottlemeyer and Johnson J Howell is throwing there is their closer if they get down to Hershiser spot Hamilton hitting here's the number 7 hitter grounded toward third foul so Gonzales will go back to second and the count remains two balls and two strikes the Dodgers scored twice in the second and once in the third and it looked like money in the bank a three nothing lead and Hershiser on the mound but the Mets came back with one in the bottom of the third and then two in a wild bottom of the six then we're tied at three Durkheim's are in marshall on the bench with Hamilton standing in two balls two strikes Gonzales back of MacDowell [Music] still to a to almost all hitters hit the top half of the ball when facing McDowell only one homerun hit against Roger this year that was hit by both he adds of the Cincinnati Reds that sinker is just tough to live four hits the hard ground balls through the infield those are the types of hits you see off McDowell it's softly tore third gonna be a tough play for Jeffries and it's too late her name is knowing he had no chance Gonzales diving back to third so he stepped off the bag to take the throw and make sure Gonzales wasn't going around third and attempt to score so Hamilton legs it out safely the Dodgers have runners at first and third Griffin is due up but Lasorda made go to the bench if Fernandez stays on the bed there I don't know I thought Keith thought that that ball was that Hamilton hit that played beaten a lot more than it put his shot if we could see that play one more time I thought her name is came off prematurely he's off right now now the ball gets to him there I don't know ladies and I to judge for judgment on his part that would have been very bill jumpin Jesus a little bit he might get my heat but I think what happened is Gonzalez rounded third he saw that and he didn't want to take a chance right here's Gonzales rounding third now I think this is what pulled her name is off the bed he said I can't take a chance yep and boom Gonzales dives back no play and so with runners at 1st and 3rd and Griffin due up Mike deivis who is being paid almost a million dollars this season he was a free agent picked up after his contract had expired with the A's and the Dodgers went into the free agent market and they got a guy who had a terrible season Mike hit 196 but he could pay a nice dividend right here Randy Myers in the bullpen Davis started the season as the Dodgers regular right fielder and they let him play about two months and then Mike Marshall wanted to move back to the Akio which made it convened to put Davis on the bank and he takes outside ball one that's when his season ended that's always a third at first base two out of the one open machines malsu the bike Davis is his strength I would say is down he's a better lowball hitter than high ball hitter Dodgers with 3 pinch hits he had home runs this year to by Franklin Stubbs and one by Mike Davis three go Hershiser is out on deck if Davis lost the sorta will again go to the bench and he has Franklin Stubbs among others available to come up three balls no strikes the count and Davis's on so Mike walks on four pitches the bases are loaded with two outs first Heiser goes back to the dugout and you've got buyers in the bullpen so if Lasorda were to opt for sub you'd be sure to see Myers he also has Danny Heep available and there is he for now he also a left-handed batter comes out of the dugout and it soon as he is announced we will see what Johnson decides to do [Music] Devi is simply waiting right now for the announcement to make sure that Heath is officially in the game before he does anything so the bases are loaded with two out Jose Gonzalez reporting for Scioscia is a third Jeff Hamilton in his second and Mike Davis who drew the walk into first and now here comes Danny Heep a former met ladies and gentlemen of the 1986 World Championship team Danny back in 1983 led the majors in pinch-hit homers Davey Johnson remember and all she was waiting for was the announcement now that he is officially in the game Johnson goes to the mound Johnson goes to the bullpen with the bases loaded two out of the eighth inning Randy Myers comes in to face the Dodgers in a 3-3 tie [Music] Mike sharpest is going to come up to hit for the Dodgers beat was announced as the pinch-hitter forcing the Bulls to the bullpen and with Randy Myers warming up here's the inside pitch on him from Mike trip Randy Myers is a perfect closer for the New York Mets he's got her that personality needing to come in in a clutch situation he never smiles once the ball from the manager and can come right in and throw fastballs I'm talking 95 miles an hour every time he lets it go maybe in the playoffs it'll get up to 98 he'll show an occasional slider to a right-hander he'll use the slider more often against the left-handed hitters a good note about Randy Myers is the league is hitting 175 the league is hitting 175 and sharpest in this season who spent a good part of the year in the minor leagues hit 271 as a pinch hitter sharperson was three for 22 and the only reason he is even eligible for postseason play was the injury today the Anderson back it up just prior to the end of the regular season and the pitch up high to the former Toronto farmhand with Gonzales and third handled in a second and Davis at birth sharperson coming over in a deal with Toronto last year and up here with the bases loaded and two out takes high ball to go right field hitter and about the only thing that could change that is discount to a no bases-loaded you gotta throw a strike if not here you don't want to go through you know fiers has only walked 17 this year struck out 69 about a four to one ratio which is excellent but behind here and it's ball three three and OH in tough situation and neutral week drive home here tonight Johnny Bench on radio is saying that the one thing about the playoffs every game is different and what's also different you don't know how players are gonna react taking all the way it is strike three one [Music] sharperson who last year was the Toronto Blue Jays opening day second base at the roundup of the miners subsequently dealt to the Dodgers and the 3 1 pitch ball do right here so the runners will be going the pic is a foul out of play we'll do it again 3-3 tie in the 8th inning with the bases loaded Davis at first [Music] working on strong currency take the lead on a bases-loaded walk as Gonzales makes it 4 to 3 and all of this taking place with two out and again another rotten estate without a bowl the yeah editing infield McDowell's growing error the soft single by Hamilton and to walk and difficult to walk only because of the fact that he has to throw the ball that while anything close to 95 miles per hour you got to get the bat started one adore the cow the doctor said they got two runs in the second without a ball being out of the infield got a run in the third thanks to a couple of infield out and another run here in the eighth went out of all leading the one the cow [Music] Steve sax [Music] [Music] come Packers back through the middle is feared by Dungeon they take care of sacks but the doctors take the lead with a run of the a vats for three la watch Howard Johnson if he doesn't make this play to run score Mike Davis even scores from second Johnson looked at second see that little hesitation caught in between and he just gets Steve sax at first base otherwise it's a six to three game the bang-bang play Jay Howell comes into pitch as Hershiser goes seven and it's Orel game to win with the Dodgers taking the lead for a three Rick Dempsey is the new catcher Gonzales have done a tap in front for Scioscia Tracy Woodson takes over at first base and Mike sharperson food through that bases-loaded walk pinch-hitting for Hershiser remains in the game and shortstop [Music] Woodson is going to bat in the number two spot Dempsey is going to hit in the sixth spot and Powell hits in the number eight position as we go to the bottom of the eighth and a reminder following this game college football regional action you will either see the game between Ohio State and Indiana or Washington against Arizona State coming right up at the conclusion of this National League Championship Series Game three and then of course at 8 o'clock Eastern 5 o'clock Pacific tonight game 3 in the American League Championship Series from Bachmann well the Sun has come out literally for the first time today at Shea Stadium that's so figure though for the Mets fans would be top of the 8th inning as the Dodgers break the tie leave for three and now it's Rick rentals Johnson and Carter in the bottom of the eighth inning now all the loser a team one tribe in a saved III wanted oh the cow losing that game had all started when he walked the Reynolds and here he's behind on two balls and no strikes Kevin during the regular season to 88 with 27 homers 99 RBIs but old for 10 in the playoffs and it's threedog I'll did not throw if any fastball strikes the other night that matter back through eight straight curveball successive hitters Johnson and Carter and they give him the green light in this three-in-one very interesting there has a very good fastball in terms of velocity over 90 miles per hour used to throw about 94 miles per hour slow radar gun when he was with the Yankees now that's before elbow surgery that he had last offseason now the way and it's three and two I wonder if they keep the green laser did not see a sign I would say they gave the green light then and as the leadoff hitter in the bottom of the 8th inning down by one trying to tie it with one swing yep pops out then she comes back runs out of room still three and two see tight thanks ballgame somebody sits up in the ticket Davey Johnson asking to look at the fall or the club maybe fj Hal they want the crew chief Harry wendelstedt to come in as well Joe West is the plaintiff I now Lasorda wants to know what's going on wendelstedt and he and West will examine howls love with Lasorda getting a first-hand look as well the other night we were talking about when Alejandro pain you came in a bit looked like he's some foreign substance in the back of his glove maybe they're a little bit confused or maybe he picked up came his glove to the bullpen I doubted that Africa and they're looking at the inside of the glove you notice tips he had his hand in there and Joe West kind of slapped it out out of the way and this comes with a cap three balls and two strikes it's like a Norman Rockwell painting yeah of course you know it there's a nun part you have to number one make a decision [Music] look at this you leave this but obviously they got the evidence because there's only a very mild protest from time in the sorta Oh Bart Giovani the nationally present now wendellstat is going to take the glove over to Kabaddi and the dead bar go behind Jamaat II was the supervisor of up higher Lee Mazzilli comes over for a first-hand look be quite honest / naturally Kresnik so Feeny there as well now one pitch did anything a foreign substance on open up fire and usually with you as an umpire you see the ball from up there you can tell whether it's a spinner or as fast [Music] baby Johnson I would think would have to have knowledge beforehand before went out there to check it there's no way that Davey's going to go out there and say that those did anything differently they just threw five pitches the other ninety was through a lot of crap well what's the indication how did he know what peroxide none of the balls acted fine no they didn't go down usually if Idaho has a foreign substance it's going to dip did he throw his glove out early Pro hallo is he on just for the game you know as well in the regular season he'd be suspended I mean that's the next question that has to be addressed here he's thrown out of the game Alejandro paimio will come in to pitch but now the question becomes what about the rest of the players and you'll recall the incident with heaven throws the Joe Niekro incident last year last year with Minnesota of course what brought the umpire out in the show Negro that was the ball did something funny he went out there and examined he found the file or the nail file the back pocket Kevin gross are you familiar with that to me I don't know if he deface the ball I did there was sandpaper wrong was the ball actually to face the ball was the ball was scuff yes whether publication of any of those things today though not from where Davey Johnson was Joe West is out there he called in Harry wendelstedt and Joe is checking the string and it seemed that Harry went in to look for moisture and he found it he found something but then he went back into the club to look for more moisture that might be one reason that Rick Dempsey was kind of reaching in there take the glove away what now my glove see chief chief is she this is unprecedented even this has never happened [Music] season so that the question becomes what about the rest of postseason action and we'll try to get a clarification on that as soon as we can that gen Fargo again behind Giamatti Barco is the National League supervisor of umpires what's so interesting is that that vania seemed to have a foreign substance on his glove on Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium no I don't know if he changed gloves but you picked up on that the other night it was just been told we have just been told that the Mets new on Wednesday night that J Howell had timed tar in his glove and that's why they checked it today they obviously have not told anybody and we just found that out at the Mets new on Wednesday night what J Howell had pine tar in his glove and it's fun it's a very interesting thing to Johnson let the innings start Howell went three and also he wasn't going to say anything he went to three in one so the count was still in McReynolds favor and then when I got to three and two is when Davey came out Dave he's just asking what the cat was the cat we may start again with Pena may be the counts not three and two now well if you're throwing with Davey was saying if you throw it to face fall but the rulebook says that the ball becomes a ball and you warn him once and can you throw him out of the ballgame now he has not thrown at the baseball as far as my knowledge is so I don't know if the would say yeah the last pitch is the ball or not again that's a the umpires have to make that ruling now we are also more lucid as to why Kevin McReynolds was swinging free and oh yeah absolutely that's that tells you the story right there that's exactly right he pops one out of the ballpark big deal let him keep pitching until he gets a guy out and it's funny because the last pitch was a foul ball so in other words they couldn't check for it to face ball but if what you're saying Tim it's it's absolutely right had McReynolds popped out they would have looked at the ball found the pine tar on the ball so McReynolds would not have been out that Lance picks the ball wound up back in the seats as a foul ball the only exception to what you just said out that flying car does not really go on the ball all the time what it does and I've seen a lot of pitchers use it they said perranoski was one of the greatest everybody felt the reason he has such a great curveball is because he used pine tar which gives you a better feel on your curveball and a tighter spin the late Bob ruse he couldn't shake hands from November it's so much pattern on his hands for eight months so meanwhile back to the game before if it's for three Dodgers the count is 3 & 2 so they're told vanish from the game McReynolds draws a leadoff walk here in the bottom of the 8th inning and Howard Johnson comes to the plate hold for 10 in the series well the other pint our incident in New York City 20 George Brett the back yeah which eventually resulted in Kansas City coming back to finish the game later that season against the Yankees oh we've hit so Nast one two one one bat one club here in New York with the pine Payne you're working on Johnson around a bunch this is strike one four lives already to send down a sign from third think of it enough little twists and turns on the tape oh boy in the air and watch him possibly as Woodsen will get credit for the ad he's going to make the tag here as they erase McReynolds in a system both a pretty good based on it doesn't matter McReynolds our Johnson at first base that's life I would suppress him well yeah it's good because he hopes that the brenell's will try to make a belated - he doesn't seven plays it well and I guess if you look at Kevin's record twenty one steals out of 21 attempts this year petty baserunning by a Kevin and a poor bunt by Johnson and no wonder at his first sacrifice cry in 352 at-bats this year it goes back to what I said about knowing your players a lot of times to ask a player that can't bunt to bunt you get that kind of result so one out partner at the plate it's been a long day already for pain you remember he was up about an hour and 15 minutes ago he was up of the fifth inning when Lasorda was thinking about pinch-hitting for Hershiser and then he was up again and so this is at least the third different time he has warmed up today it's an ironic thing about this game is that you finally get a good matchup a fastball hitter Hojo against the basketball pitcher get the first baseline and you bun one out and the 1o pitch missing football to who there is sandy Carter Gary's wife I think Gary may have confused the Dodgers in the sense that they all say his powers of the inside half get he went to right field he's shown them he is willing to sacrifice power and hit the ball the other way so Pena fingers well that pitch on the outside part of the plate that normally is a pitch that he will pull for a double play he's now a pitch he's going to hit the other way well maybe you have to do something differently the game is a catcher speed at first base 20 [Music] you have to keep that in mind [Music] particularly as the catcher bring in one on Carter so these are any indication they usually are with baserunners Oh Joe's not going anywhere I mean a very small lead first I through the density for years doesn't throw like he used to but quick release we're usually an accurate arm there goes Johnson's the pictures are strike let's go way off - on Gary Carter most catchers especially catchers that are on the bench don't have a chance to warm up rip through a few tosses but he didn't want he tosses the second base and sure enough a short hop and the Dodgers are lucky because if this ball doesn't hit Johnson it might be in center field and Howard might be on third base three and fill with one out 4-3 Dodgers bottom of the eighth-inning in the air to left field playable for Gibson Johnson remains at second and two down now and wally backman coming to the place [Music] so Carter stymie dear the game one hero flies to left to down in the eighth and wally backman coming to the plate and again following this game college football you'll see either Ohio State against Indiana or Washington against Arizona State next wally backman 1 for 3 today good success against pnew coorporate with two walks in this career and this series one for nine and Len Dykstra has come out into the on-deck circle he would hit provide wanna go I'll tell you Backman drives to run in I might be inclined to leave Myers in the ballgame Zoli thrown one third of an inning he's a short man you Barney wass McDowell and if Backman doesn't get a hint myers is still in the game anyway for the moment they have ferry leaves throwing in the pan good pitching his good defense mr. plane [Music] to get [Music] deixar now is a game time for for the game and leaks will occur later the ninth inning yeah but the runner in scoring position now you've got to use Dykstra and Backman had a single baby may have to have electric [Music] [Music] here's Lee this is one of those great postseason games where you've got to go to your pee men in the bullpen but then if it's time the longer the game goes you're almost using your bullpen in Reverse you're using your idle of it as your lawn as your short do it this game has the earmarks of Game three in the 1986 season and it was won by Len Dykstra on a home run off of pork ball from Dave Smith and he drove in wily back and in front of it game 3 in 1986 on a Saturday on a Saturday was the starting pitcher that day total is identical each team [Music] second my crew on deck and Mookie Wilson Lennie's way Jerry [Music] pallazo the third-base coach he wasn't even looking at him no he's hitting here Sam look at him back from his second base pay no attention to Dijkstra which means three and two [Music] pretty plain and simple as got a break fall over just right after you that's great after making good pitches [Music] a pretty good swing so three and two on Ike this is the situation with a winning run on second base that you have to make your pitch you have you have a base open Dykstra can hit as well as Wilson so you don't make their pitch from sometimes gamble you walk Dykstra and then try to make the good pitches for Wilson [Music] do not give into a hitter very Dykstra's reaction on the last fish [Music] [Music] you okay [Music] but runners at first and second and bring Mookie Wilson to the plate the Dodgers have turned us into the mound they have a Roscoe in the bullpen Wilson is a switch hitter and also Brian a Bolton he's in the bullpen he is the right-hander Wilson as a right-handed batter hit 282 this year lefty 311 so there's really not that much of a difference in perranoski goes to the mound but enough of a difference that he wants to Roscoe he wants Wilson to come up as a right-handed batter so payment is gone and Jesse Orosco will make these second appearance in this League Championship Series coming in to face wookie Wilson with runners at first and second and two out in the eighth so Shea Stadium in New York as Jesse Orosco comes in to pitch a wild wild game now we're gonna take a look back here here's J Howell what do you suspect that substance is on the build of his camp Jim well I don't know if it's dirt or its fact that when you put pine tar it's just like if you picked up a pine tar rag and then you put your hand in the dirt it would it would stick the dirt would stick to your hand you go to your hat which is a nervous reaction or you you know I doubt if he would put the pine tar there it's much easier to hide it in your glove or you know in between the fingers are inside your gloves so that that looks like the remnants of dirt after you've gone to the pine tar and what the pine tar does on a day like today allows you to have better field baseball now it is illegal though the rosin is the only legal substance that you can put on the baseball unless it's dirt mm-hmm the only abnormal substance Bart Romani in conference there with Ed Vargo behind him and it's our understanding and we'll get this clarified shortly but there'll be a full evaluation after the game in terms of exactly what the substance was and again how it will perhaps impact Powell's future in this series and as I say that will take place after the game and we've got a football game to follow and out route wigs in the studio so whatever happens we can find out about it as soon as we know anything meanwhile back to the game itself which is not bad 4/4 time bottom of the eighth-inning Mookie Wilson hitting right-handed with backs in the go-ahead run at second Len Dykstra head first and two out wall wonderful when Orosco pitched for the mint he had a habit of falling behind on balls up and a way to right-handed hitters early in the count one and one so interesting terribly unfair mookie hit off of look at Fenton Hinds the Dodger anxious bet but Mookie hit off Jesse and batting practice in her squad games but the advantage goes to the pitcher I mean the bean batting average was like 248 for national league hitters this year so percent child-wife percentage-wise or whatever the advantage does go to but he does fall behind hitter [Music] [Music] looks like I actually possibly the strike zone exactly regarding this bank credit hi Jeffrey and the bases are loaded and the myths got a break because if that ball doesn't hit him it's five in Dykstra's four the Dodgers got the break right that's a break for the Dodgers if that ball doesn't hit Jeffries had certainly by Dempsey and Dykstra walked home and Davey Johnson is out and take a look at him Davee of course is thinking down about tomorrow with let's freeze this foot if it's not already frozen from his weather now I could put Elster it short I could put Johnson 2/3 and you really [Music] [Music] well he not too happy with scoring two go ahead [Music] thanks for third Wilson at second Jeffery's inferred at the plate he made the back to the back to the bottom of the eighth five to four New York [Music] one and one looking ahead of the Dodgers ninth inning now Woodson will lead or then Gibson and Marshall was into the number two spot and again with McDowell & Myers gone we had been warming up and I believe David told into the bullpen right now is cold throwing in the Mets fan good wine throwing in the bullpen you think the commit a few storylines speaking of hookers [Music] the only way you can take that kind of [Music] the cool [Music] Brittany Horton that's six [Music] all right Ricky Horton in to pitch Darryl Strawberry comes up with a bases loaded they've taken Jeffrey's out of the game he was hit by that pitch and Kevin Elster will go in to pinch run Flores so he's at second Mets lead by two and Horton works on strawberry one strawberry the ninth man to come up to the inning the facts of the inning have scored three times just two hits three walk and hit a batter Ricky Horton came over before they can Owen - Owen - from the White Sox we're filling hill again he was the White Sox opening a starting pitcher this year then went to the bullpen and finally to LA and he this is the way here the count water again Woodsen Gibson and Marshall when the Dodgers bat of the night [Music] licenses to swing at that little breaking ball where I call swerve off the plate Oh [Music] Ricky Horton Paris you the border shot the left field and it's rough [Music] and a strawberry six hit in three games and his third today and he's driven in three runs McReynolds want to know the cow bureaus so strong so because he's so strong that boomers are gonna fall in nobody's going to catch that one that's right smaller hitters wouldn't get a hit like that possible Mack Reynolds up for the second time in the inning he started things with a law and of course that was the sequence during which Powell was thrown out of the game all of that in this heading it seems like about two hours ago [Music] that is and he broke his bat on it as well the count of two and one definitely two hours if you're a Dodger fan the way this city is going you bring in your number-one reliever he gets thrown out for foreign substances good angle on this see the right way a ball will hook pulled just barely hooks foul he's out of the ballgame and then you to go to Pena who probably was the next best reliever they have and he doesn't have very good control go to a Rosco was not very good at all and then he'd go to work who it's bordered the left field not murdered reported - and - now the gallon and that really is Ricky burger that most effective pitch the right-hander he has an excellent changeup Joe is you the fastball has to keep it down baisemeaux breaking scoreboard had 2 2 & 1 the count is 2 & 2 on the grill and it's a bouncer to third and the inning [Music] the vet said believe it eight to four now Michael is with Tim McCarver and Jim Palmer Shea Stadium in New York on a a while and wet Saturday afternoon where the Mets come up with five runs in the bottom of the 8th inning and lead it 8 to 4 and David Cone comes out of the bullpen he worked two innings in a starter in game 2 and comes out of the bullpen to try to close the door in game 3 as Davey Johnson told us it would be David would have a possible appearance in this afternoon's game and that went for last night also since he worked only two innings and threw 40 pitchers on Wednesday night Elster who pinch ran for Jeffries stays in the game he'll play short and Howard Johnson moves over to third with Jeffries gone and SoCo now works on Tracy woods that Dykstra stays in the game in centerfield one on Woodsen batting for the first time today oh the other night gone after the opening couple of paragraphs he's trying to write the climax today and account wanted to tone coming out of the bullpen to assume a starting role in May that was after 7 relief appearances those two toothpicks coming up again college football we'll follow another look here up and in on them again a towel thrown out of the game there are the games you'll see one of those in your region next towel thrown out of the game the word we get from the nationally president bartlet Romani thrown out because an illegal substance was suspected they will investigate fully and further after the game and it will be determined to a penalty of any will apply to je Howell Gibson kitchen foul off to the right and of course with our baseball game going into football in our front week at the studio we'll let you know as soon as we know any further no balls one strike the count on Gibson - the funny thing with J Howell kicked out of the game today the one guy that David Cone apologized to last night before the game was J Howell for his remarks about J in the column the famous column now that was distributed throughout the Dodger Clubhouse Wednesday before the ball game wanted to hooking foul still a ball and two strikes on if to tell you there has been no batter's box since about the third inning all that stuff to soak up the moisture around home plate the batter's box is obliterated but not the memory of this game huh there's something this game is about three hours and 40 minutes old at this point at the top of the night to a two beam for tomorrow 95 now is Monday at noon Eastern at 9 in the morning Pacific let's try to go up two games to one who sued against it popped up Elster [Music] want to know the cow again early on the Dodgers first eyes were on the bound a three nothing lead look like money in the bank all into the canal actually the count is one and one the board had an O and - and Mike Larson said wait a second what's the count here and Joe West put up one finger on e can - well what did he put up one and one right yes like a game show it's 1 in 1 I think like you make the call yeah forget that I have up north but any of that mean I think it's to it alone do it Hernandes drifting back might have a plane no about three rows back so still two balls and two strikes the center-field Thanks was right there wally backman [Music] there's a guy right [Music] started second baseman was given in training back with his may 22nd and has come back to be certainly the hero of this ballgame or one of them so the mechs take the lead in the series winning today at Jakes Adia by a score of eight to four of course football to follow and a reported hand time on the
