[Music] [Applause] so [Music] and i'm using the loctite 515 loctite 515. the five one five now we're gonna use the five one five five one five five one five loctite five one five all right guys we're gonna pick up where we left off on the oliver oc-46 crawler the plan is to get it driving put the tracks back on get it outside see if we can make it turn left and right do all kinds of fun stuff i am working on putting the track frames together i got the sprockets installed nothing exciting about that they have those cone-shaped washers but i ran into a little bit of a problem i don't know if you guys would be able to see it on the camera but that track frame is bent so it kind of curls out like this which isn't the end of the world but yeah this final drive over here took a pretty big hit at one time they must have crashed the machine into something which would explain why that boss was broken and yeah a lot of the things that we've found so far i think are explained by that anyway i don't know of a more elegant way to do it than just hit her with a big hammer so we'll just do that a few hundred times and it should be straight as an arrow all right that's a little bit better i don't know how well you guys be able to see it it's really hard to film kind of semi-outdoors this time of the year it's midday the sun's as high as it's gonna get and you see how long the shadows are yeah we're only about five weeks away from the shortest day of the year so it's not going to get better for a while i think i've mentioned before that the owner of this machine is a retired machinist and machine tool rebuilder and he made new adjusting screws for the track tensioners these are them right here so i'm not sure how he did it looks like maybe a piece of threaded rod and then he turned the end down to this stub and then welded a nut to it but it looks pretty good now this one on this side was in good shape but the other one on the other side it'd have been pretty well mangled [Music] oh i want to pound that on but that's where it goes and this wishbone shaped piece here came from the other machine the parts machine i'll put this bracket on the outside now i don't know if there's supposed to be a bushing inside here doesn't appear to be one on this particular part now the inside ones all had brass bushings there's a similar piece on the inside it doesn't have the sheet metal cover and they have brass bushings but what's curious about that is that the the grease zerk holes weren't drilled through the brass bushings so there's no way they were ever getting grease so before i put the inside ones in i drilled those out and we're going to use some new bolts on this because the old ones they're looking pretty crusty [Applause] i hear you buddy well that's looking pretty good let me throw the other side together and we can put this thing down on the tracks getting pretty close well i think we're ready to set it down did find one problem so this is the front idler see the left side here pretty tight but the right side she is pretty sloppy now the problem with that when i was a kid my dad had an international td9 crawler loader and the sprockets or the front idlers were worn out on it the bushings were worn on it and what would happen is the the idlers would kind of steer a little bit and then it would walk off the tracks it would constantly throw the tracks off so if we're gonna fix something related to the undercarriage that would be a good place to start and also on the same side the furthest back track roller see if i can get it on the camera that one's pretty loose so yeah i don't think we're going to worry about it right now for the amount that he uses it it's probably not going to matter but they can be rebuilt you got to take the rock guards off and then unbolt the the bearings on either side and drop the whole thing down i think there's bushings inside that had to be replaced all right guys got a little bit ahead of myself i had to take the rear of the track frame loose because there's two pipe plugs on the inside of the final drive well there's actually four pipe plugs but two of them are inaccessible with the track frame attached so i had to stick these two in now we can put the track frame back on and we should be all set [Applause] huh [Music] so so gotta drill out these cotter pins sorry split pins in the master link pins [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Applause] okay got to install the rear cover over the steering clutches and on the old transmission there were four dowel pins one two three four and on this one three of them are missing but good news is i have plenty of dowel pins in stock they're standard 3 8 dolphins i think these are even pretty close to the right length i can't see why it really matters because we don't have the rear pto [Music] oh i should probably use a brass hammer who has time for that anyway if you have the optional pto attachment there's a you know a shaft that comes out here and there'd be another bearing or maybe two bearings i don't know and that would all have to be kind of an alignment so that's why they use the dowel pins now why do these four dowel pins couldn't tell you so we're going to glue it back on with the rtb silicone this is permatex ultra gray and i got quite a few comments in the last video about this which i i expected you know a lot of people were asking if it was going to leak because we hadn't used gaskets and you know everybody has their favorite their favorite method including a lot of people like to use silicone and a gasket which i really don't understand if you're going to use silicone why bother with the gasket i guess is my philosophy and as far as will it work you know the japanese were really kind of they kind of started all the the use of our tv way back in the even in the 70s and if you work on japanese cars you know they really don't use a lot of gaskets if they do use gaskets they're usually o-ring style gaskets you know extruded rubber those work pretty well but a lot of times on japanese cars you know timing covers oil pans differential cases you name it it's all sealed with rtv and no gasket and you know the the problem with our tv mostly is the way people use it they don't follow the instructions you know you're supposed to install the fasteners kind of snug let it sit for an hour then torque the fasteners to spec and then let it sit for 24 hours before you add oil and i guess that's just a little bit too too long for some people or too complicated i don't know what it is and the other problem is people just put on way too much then you get it squeezing out on the inside and pretty soon it's clogging up all the filter screens [Music] causing all kinds of problems and you know this idea of using rtv instead of gaskets it's it's trickled down into american stuff too like even the 73 power stroke diesel engines they don't have a oil pan gasket it's just done with our tv all right folks i think today is the day we need to fill the transmission and final drives with oil tension the tracks and then set up a fuel system and we should be able to take this thing for a little shakedown run now i did get the fuel tank but i don't want to mess around figuring out all the plumbing and this diaphragm pump and all that crap so we'll just set up our janky portable tank and that should be good enough got some more parts the belly pan is here and some miscellaneous hardware there's the floor plates hardware for the fuel tank battery box and tool boxes are pending but you know plenty of stuff here to to make it go but before we get to that i had a little incident with my pickup last night it's a 95 ford f-250 with a 7-3 power stroke went to town to get a pizza decided to fill up with fuel because i was basically on e and it made it about halfway home started sputtering and pretty soon it died and would not restart of course it's pitch black i had almost no tools with me so i called my beautiful long-suffering wife asked her to come tow me home of course i've always got a tow rope with me because you know it's an obs ford let's be honest anyway i forget sometimes that she grew up on the good side of town and she's never towed a vehicle and it was quite an adventure now i don't know what the appropriate speed would be for towing a truck that weighs twice as much as the tow vehicle her toyota rav4 but apparently she decided that the the appropriate speed would be reached by just burying the accelerator pedal in the floor until it wouldn't go any faster so i went on a four mile white knuckle thrill ride and we got back here to the to the shop and then apparently when i flashed the headlights and honked the horn she interpreted that as gun it as hard as you can and pull the end out of the tow rope so it's actually a new tow rope i've never used it before but she managed to pull the end right out of it with a what 140 horsepower toyota rav for so good for her anyway i i suspect that the fuel filter is clogged up the fuel tanks are both rusty the back one's actually so rusty it leaks out externally i can't even use it the front one's not much better but the rust is all on the inside so it likes to eat fuel filters i think that's probably where our problem is we'll see what we can figure out well i remember distinctly when i grabbed the pump handle it spewed fuel all over the side of my truck which at the time kind of made me mad but now it's actually a good thing because pretty sure i did in fact put diesel fuel in it that can really throw you for a loop one time i was working in a shop we had a six liter power stroke come in wooden run you know had good fuel pressure good you know injector pulse all that stuff and uh after a couple of solid days of messing around with it figured out that they put gas in it unleaded gasoline instead of diesel fuel so don't make that mistake so the previous owner has upgraded this truck to a super duty style electric fuel pump mounted here on the frame rail so there's a filter built right into it and there's a little plug here that you can drain the water out so we'll start with the plug probably gonna need a filter but i can't get one today it's saturday and thanks to kovid my parts store is no longer open on saturday gotta say it's not looking too good down here of course we've been running the structural floor mats for the whole time i've owned it but it it looks like this rocker section the entire rocker section on the bottom of the cab is just about to delete itself uh that's the seat belt i'm pretty sure right there so i don't think there's any point in buckling up it's basically attached to nothing what are you gonna do i think one more winner out of this truck and then it's going to the crusher it's just uh yeah the frame is rock solid but the body is falling apart oh man i've never seen one of these plugs that didn't leak put a brand new o-ring on it and it'll be bad the next time you gotta take it apart doesn't look too bad really oh i've even got a special socket just hmm really doesn't look too bad i don't know i don't know uh yeah that's not good gee i wonder why it didn't work not good at all there's some nice big chunks in there okay well we're not gonna put that back in well let's check the stash i think there might be one in here [Music] that's an oil filter for a six liter power stroke what's this oh yeah that's gonna be it jackpot okeydoke filter installed now there is a spin on filter up in front and i'm 100 sure i don't have one of those so we'll have to wait on that but the primary filter takes the gets the most crud [Music] oh i don't think she's got one more kick left in her now the fuel pump sounds a little bit happier she was just screaming last night see if she'll go yeah buddy cool well i think i fixed the tow rope it's kind of hokey the way they do it so they just pass the end of the line through the hook and then they shove it inside of itself like a chinese finger trap which i don't know i guess if it works it works now the plastic sleeve that's supposed to go around this thing is broken so so we can just use the electrician's secret weapon here [Applause] cool fixed just filling up the final drives now it's kind of a pain so i'm using this little fluid extractor it's basically a big syringe lets me squirt the oil right in through the check plug i don't know what the factory you know factory approved tool for this is anyway i think it holds about two pints of oil all right guys we're gonna grease the track rollers i think if i read the book right they were originally supposed to be oil filled with oil but i guess the people who know these machines say to use this john deere corn head grease so that's what we're gonna do let me pose a question to you viewers can you name a tool that's more frustrating to use than a grease gun i mean it's like satan himself invented these things this piece of crap right here the plunger is swollen or it's made wrong or something and it will not fit down inside of the grease cartridge that's supposed to fit down in there shove the grease up towards the towards the business end and it doesn't work so let's see if we can fix it fixed all right guys i think it's time i got the tracks adjusted pretty simple just set a straight edge across the top of the track from the sprocket to the idler you're supposed to have two inches of slack in the middle there are no top rollers so that's you know pretty simple i guess we'll check the oil here real quick looks good on the full mark i've got the portable fuel pump hooked up here that works see if it starts it does have the internet's favorite oil filter so it's probably junk but we'll give it a shot a little choke a little throttle what do you think pub [Music] [Music] down [Music] wheels so so yeah buddy i don't know how you can complain about that this is the best running engine i've ever seen it's like it was just built yesterday i think the thermostat's opening feels pretty warm up here yeah cool see could use some improvement but the rest of the machine is ready to go it runs it drives it turns left it turns right what more could he want all right guys the wind's probably going to ruin the audio sorry about that this is the factory loader attachment for the oliver and it's really not in too bad of shape the cylinders have been collapsed [Applause] this is not not part of the functioning part of the cylinder it's just an extension those cylinders are fully collapsed so yeah all the hoses are stripped off i think they were all bad we're going to replace all of those i think the valve block may be as bad or at least it needs one spool but you know overall it's not too bad i think most the joints would take grease it hasn't been broken or welded anywhere that i can see cutting edge even looks pretty decent so you'll be seeing more about this in the future episode but that's probably where we're gonna stop the video for now oh good now i can clean up this giant mess and send home some of these parts that'll be nice don't ask me why i saved all this stuff but here's a whole box of old bearing races and seals and this is a box full of empty boxes of new bearing races and seals most of them are there i think and here's a whole box full of grease and oily rags all from this machine all right guys i want to address a few things on camera before we wrap this up first there will be at least one more video about the oliver crawler we're going to install that loader and try to figure out some of the plumbing issues maybe go after the hydraulic pump i don't know when that's going to be posted i think after this video we're going to kind of shift gears and do something else for a while and we'll come back and revisit the oliver at some point down the road second there's been a lot of comments in previous videos and questions about what this is going to cost is it worth it you know why bother spending all this time and money on a 60 year old machine that's you know functionally obsolete and you know hard to get parts for the answer is you know it's it's not cheap it's not easy but you know the customer understands that and for whatever reason he has decided that it's worth it and you know it's not my place to say that that's right or wrong i kind of told him what it was going to cost and he said get to it so that's what i'm doing if he's got the money i've got the time there's you know nothing else to it next i wanted to go over some guidelines or rules for doing a big project like this i get a lot of comments from people who say that you know this this kind of a project is overwhelming or you know beyond their skill level and you know they're amazed that anyone can take something apart and put it back together and get all the pieces you know back together in the right order you know how do you keep track of things that kind of stuff so let me give you guys some guidelines that i've kind of come up with so the first rule on a big project like this is you need to have some confidence in yourself i don't want to take anything away from the people at oliver cleat track who built this machine but it was not assembled by you know 100 phds in a nasa clean room it was built by regular people like like you and i and if they can figure out how to build it we can figure out how to fix it and you know that's all there is to it it's doable trust me rule number two get the service manual we're lucky on this project customer had most of the service manuals that we needed there's a parts catalog here there's a parts catalog and service manual just for the loader attachment have operators manual and instruction manual you name it we've got it now even though i had all of those manuals i still purchased an additional service manual just for the oc 46 machine itself i bought that online from a company called gen sales they actually have a downloadable link that you can buy cost me a whole twenty seven dollars to buy that service manual and the information that's in there is invaluable you know who knows more about how to fix the machine than the people who designed it and built it it's just it blows my mind that people won't seek out service information and for whatever reason people have decided that all service information should be available for free on the internet and that is just not the reality you got to pay for this stuff now the legality of whether or not gen gensales can sell you a copyrighted oliver service manual i'm not 100 sure on how that works at best i think it's probably a gray area but you know as far as i understand it the ramifications for that you know if they ever you know had problems with that that would be on them that would not be on us as the end user we haven't done anything wrong so check out gen sales they have a pretty good selection of service manuals i don't know how it works you know on the legal end but it's the best that we can do you know i can't call all over cleat track and ask for a service manual they don't exist i guarantee if you go to an agco dealership and ask for parts for a 1960 oliver oc46 you're going to get a lot of blank stairs number three a little bit of experience goes a long way and what i mean by that is things that you learn working on one machine are almost always applicable to similar machines and the more things that you work on the more you come to realize that everything is built in a pretty similar way and rules of thumb that you learn along the way they can be applied almost universally you may have noticed as we went through the build up process on this machine you know there were times that i deviated from the procedure in the service manual and that just is based on experience working on other machines so it's a snowball effect as you work on more things and build that experience you know you get those gut feelings where you can kind of kind of help yourself and get away from you know the posted procedures that are a lot of times clumsy and you know maybe even be wrong and the fourth and final point need to be realistic about your goals and your abilities and your goals and abilities need to be in line with each other now this is a 60 year old piece of industrial machinery it's not going to the moon there's no reason for us to take it apart down to every single last you know nut and bolt and you know try to build it back up as something better than it was when it left the factory you'll never recoup that time you know i we're not taking this thing to amelia island there's no reason to do a squatch 253 you know 175 part you know concourse level restoration you know we just need to get in there fix the things that we can fix and you know figure out the things we can live with put it back in service and you know use it enjoy it i think that's where people go go wrong with projects like this you know they they bite off more than they can chew and they get overwhelmed and then you know pretty soon it's sitting in a barn in a corner for 25 years and it's never gets done or it never even gets to be used and enjoyed so yeah just be realistic you know if you really want to do a you know full you know body off rotisserie restoration that's fine but you need to understand that that's a big job and it probably isn't for everybody so anyway hope that helps guys you know it was built by humans it can be fixed by humans the only limitation is time and money if you got enough of those you can fix anything so thanks for watching and i'll see you guys next time
