for gamers 2020 wasn't just the end of a console generation lots of other stuff just flat out stopped this year hi folks it's falcon and today on game ranks join us in morning it's 10 video game things that died in 2020 starting off at number 10 it's the rtx 2080 ti which was released in the fall of 2018 and was basically the beefy ray tracing big card on the block from nvidia for quite a while it also launched at a price of thirteen hundred dollars and been overpriced basically its entire life span and you know what you can really tell it is an overpriced card by the fact that its successor the rtx 3080 came out and does everything so much better like i mean plays doom like 50 frames per second higher than the 2080 has the potential to do literally twice the work at roughly half the cost the rtx 3080 came in at prices just like significantly more accessible like that's within the reach of a lot more pc gamers than the top end 2080 ti seriously if the best thing like a huge generational leap beyond the previous best thing was half the price all the time every generation maybe i would complain a lot less about basically everything at number 9 inner sloth the creators of the runaway hit among us had a scheduled sequel created all brewed up and they were working on it and they cancelled it not actually the worst thing that could happen they are incorporating all of the planned content that they had done for among us two into among us one but the main reason they decided to do this was the code base for the original game was just desperately outdated and they wanted to be able to continually update in a certain way that it just can't handle but being among us became such a huge thing they decided actually you know let's just spend the time and update the code base on the original and just keep going from there which is in my opinion probably the smarter thing to do not just marketing wise but just for the sake of everyone's ease of use but just to be clear marketing a sequel to a game that had just become a runaway hit two years after its original release might be a kind of difficult task to justify given the player base for among us is just so high it is literally 120 000 players an hour at times would you really want to move that entire player base over to another game i wouldn't at number 8 marvel's avengers isn't technically gone but like relatively speaking ouch like the game debuted to quite a bit of fanfare we kind of expected it to be pretty good on account of all the delays like the delays seem to be a thing that might signify they were working on parts of the game longer that would make the game better uh we've seen that story a lot lately but it doesn't seem to be panning out at least not in the way we'd like it to marvel's avengers is probably one of the more egregious examples of such because the game itself isn't terrible but it's also basically that kind of anthem games as a service game where though the gameplay might be all right or even good in the case of this one the game itself is just fundamentally kind of dull it's trying to just keep you around and drag things out so you're playing longer and it's just like anyway the game has lost 96 of its players that means four percent of the people that bought it are still playing it and it struggles reaching a thousand players an hour which if you remember in the last point about among us they're like hitting like 120 000 players an hour at times there's just this tiny little itty bitty indie game and marvel's avengers is well marvel's avengers and number seven uh crucible now crucible was amazon game studios first big game like they'd mainly stuck to like phone or tablet games or whatever and they got too big for their britches i guess back in may they launched this free-to-play team-based shooter team based meaning hero based kind of overwatchy kind of team fortressy but not as good as either of those titles unlike valorant which managed to differentiate itself and on top of that this game didn't just launch with like zero buzz it launched with zero events zero like timed content anything that might be exclusive or make you feel like you need to play the game now they launched in pre-season and and when i say launch i mean like launch launch i don't mean like beta launch or soft launch i mean like they launched and the developers quote unquote were going to fine-tune it as they went which anyway the game closed doors in october kind of shocking that it lasted that long because like nobody was playing it which sucks because it wasn't bad or anything it just definitely wasn't worth the time like with maybe some time and love it could have been something but it definitely wasn't at number six sega sold off about 96 of their arcade business which means about 190 plus arcades like actual physical locations that they owned they sold to another company and that comedy closed some of them but part of what ended up happening due to the financial troubles of sega during this pandemic operating all these arcades was the closing of the sega akibara number two building which is like easily one of the coolest looking arcades from the outside and a place that you've probably visited in yakuza it ain't there no more which sucks like it was kind of referred to as a nerd mecca like a lot of people from all over the world japan the united states europe etc would go here because it's kind of a famous arcade and there's not really a lot of that left at least famous enough that people in other countries have heard about it like again there's like 190 sega arcades in japan but they aren't ubiquitous in the way that is like you've probably seen that building in a photo somewhere well it's not that anymore it looks very depressing now at number five mixer went down because you know it was mixer this was always gonna be a thing in my mind i did not have the confidence in mixer that microsoft did phil spencer apparently did not see the type of activity he expected he said we started pretty far behind in terms of where mixer's monthly active viewers were compared to some of the big players out there and clearly that just didn't pick up despite the fact that they had signed both shroud and ninja to exclusivity agreements which that's just done now those agreements are apparently going to be honored by facebook gaming who microsoft is partnering with on xcloud apparently so that you can use xcloud on facebook gaming however i just have this feeling like it's not going to matter apparently both ninja shroud and really any other partners are going to be allowed to stream elsewhere so my thought is they probably will they've been coy about it they haven't announced decisions on whether they're going to but like come on facebook gaming i understand that it's probably bigger than mixer but it's also facebook gaming really gonna maintain the younger audience on facebook gaming no i think they'll probably be back on twitch before long that's that's my opinion i don't know whether that's how it'll pan out but if it does you know that old falcon was right about yet another thing yes that does sound conceited and i don't care at number four the sixty dollar price point for premium games is well it's not gone i'm sure there are gonna be plenty of premium games that cost sixty dollars in the future however they've sort of broken the ceiling for that we have at this current time started seeing games that are going for seventy dollars which is too much frankly i understand the argument for raising the prices because of inflation however video games have always been like way overpriced 40 to 50 is kind of really what they should be priced and should have been priced much lower a decade two decades even three decades ago in 1990 the us dollar was worth precisely two times as much as it is right now profits for gaming companies and by profits i mean margins i mean amount they're investing in games and amount they're recouping is at an all-time high in 2020 they are doing better than they ever have so why do games still cost this much in fact are going up in price i could complain about this one for a much longer period of time than this but i think we kind of have to just say goodbye to the 60 premium game at this point because it seems like they're gonna start charging 70. and number three microsoft is closing all of their stores now keep in mind they have been closed since march you know because of the pandemic and everything but they're not going to be reopening them there are a few of them in much larger cities like new york london cindy etc that are going to be rebranded as microsoft experience centers and will primarily work as a customer service space but they are closing the stores and there's a few of them out there but apparently they're reaching more people online and their customer service experience works better online as well i've always been to the mind that these stores are kind of just like an ape of the apple stores and i've never really thought there's a good reason to go in them same goes for the apple stores i mean if i can do that stuff online why would i go into a store for it which is you know exactly why they're probably doing what they're doing so i think probably good move overall at least for them hopefully nobody loses their job over this though because apparently they have been using the same employees for remote customer service work which is great like all things considered probably best case scenario if it all pans out that way and number two gamestop is really having to deal with the fact that their game stop and are stopping a lot of things they're not fully stopping gaming or anything like that so at the moment we will refrain from making the most dire pun possible regarding their name but they are going to stop selling a lot of games like the top 200 games will still be out on the shelf but if you want to get games in a game stop you're gonna have to go to the front desk and ask for them like i don't know why you wouldn't go for them for one of the top 200 selling games out there but we'll see they're also closing about 450 locations because i mean who isn't for one that's not entirely gamestop's fault i mean a lot of things have changed this year but that is also a lot of closures and the thing that they're having to basically do is start thinking about how they become an online retailer which considering amazon absolutely dominates that space i mean good luck to them and finally at number one and this one is maybe less of a sad thing some of these were pretty much downers in my eyes not all of them but some the eighth generation of console graphics help the adjacent generation of graphics card graphics it's over we are in a new era where a lot more is possible we're in the ray tracing era which is to be clear something i'm quite excited about ray tracing is awesome but between the ps5 and the xbox series x and the nvidia rtx 3080 times they are a-changing now is it as big of a leap as previous generational leaps that's kind of something i think that we'll be answering over the next couple years but again ray tracing in mainstream gaming it's a dream come true for a lot of people who love very very realistic graphics i'm excited i think a lot of people are excited we will be watching ray tracing's career with great interest but what do you think what's something that 2020 took from you as a gamer that you feel like you'll never get
