Pokemon I know it makes me sad too but we're going out with a bang so let's play a game if you guys learn one new thing while watching this video how would you get with an like but if you already knew all ten facts before watching only give it a dislike guilt free because if you knew everything means I didn't do my job properly so any further ado here are 10 things you didn't know about pokemon gold silver and crystal so back before we all had smartphones also known as the Paleolithic era during which Kabuto and ammonites rained the earth there was this thing called a cell phone which probably would have gotten you burnt at the stake for witchcraft back then but they were extremely popular on the release of gold and silver in Japan especially which is probably why the developers decided to include the Polka gear the Bogut gear in Gen 2 had three main functions a phone to call important characters in the game whenever you wanted to a watch to tell the time which was necessary concering gold and silver introduced a day/night cycle and a radio that you could tune into and get trainer tips or potentially win prizes there were actually a few Easter eggs involving the radio mode for example if you try to use it at the lake of rage you'll pick up Team Rocket's evolution forcing signals instead you which yeah is some pretty incredible attention to detail but I'll do you one better try to use it inside the ruins of alph and a bow here will lose all signal accessing the radio instead results in you hearing a haunting sound which could be the cries of the unknown Oh okay so this one is bizarre there are two secret completely random text boxes you can find in pokemon crystal the first is at the Kanto daycare center by searching the door which reveals house for sale nobody lives here even though you can walk right in and talk to the people who are living there so I'm inclined to believe that's a bit of misplaced text but there is no way that's the case of this next one okay so on the top floor of the celadon mansion if you stand one tile to the right of the staircase on the top floor and hit a a text box will pop up saying there's graffiti on the wall you added a mustache hey don't look at me I've got no clue why it's there so in crystal the first time you talk to the daycare man he'll give you an odd egg that could contain either a Pichu cleffa eglee puffs tyro Smoochum elekid or Magby that will know a special move dizzy punch will make this especially interesting is there's a pre-programmed 14 percent chance that the egg will hatch automatically into the shiny version of that Pokemon that's right a 14 percent chance just to get a free shiny but bizarrely enough that was actually change from the Japanese version of the game which was even more ridiculous and had a 50% chance of an automatic SHINee so it's fairly well known that pokemon gold silver and crystal run on the original pokemon red blue and yellow engine but what makes that interesting is they're leftovers you might not expect that can pop up occasionally for example in Pokemon Stadium it's possible to acquire a Pikachu that knows surf and transfer the pokemon yellow and using the surfing Pikachu in that game we would replace the usual surf sprite of a Lapras with a custom one a Pikachu on a surfboard and because crystal uses the same engine and a lot of the same sprites that also works here as well so I'm sure the vast majority of you have heard pokemons humble origin story right legend has it that Satoshi Tajiri collected bugs as a child and this inspired him to eventually make a game that would replicate the fun of that boy you may not know is that in pokemon crystal this bit of history was incorporated into an in-joke if you go inside the battle tower you can fight a bug catcher named Tajiri sadly I don't have and can't find any footage of this and I wasn't about to spend an entire day hoping to get lucky on a one out of 74 chains of seeing him but his name is in the game code for the battle tower trainer names I promise you so as you may or may not know the Pokemon daycare was not a thing back in the days of Gen 1 and was only introduced in Gen 2 and of course going hand in hand with a Pokemon daycare comes breeding but this mechanic presented an interesting challenge for the developers of Gen 2 what level do we want the Pokemon to hatch at well the obvious answer is level one after all a newly hatched Pokemon shouldn't be stronger than one who supposedly been living in the wild for several years right but of course we all know that's not the case and Pokemon these days hatch at level 5 but why is that well back in the day there was a glitch without Pokemon games handle experience called experience underflow I don't want to go into the whole long complicated explanation for why it happened here but basically level 1 Pokemon are stored as having negative 54 experience points whereas and level 2 Pokemon is stored as having 10 experience points and if you go into battle with a level 1 Pokemon and it gained less than negative 54 experience the game would glitch and give the max amount of experience possible seems to be leveling it to 100 so that's why you can find a level 2 Ratatat in the wild but can only ever breed 1 at level 5 so this is interesting but you know that in Gen 2 Shuckle can manufacture rare candies for you yeah that's right the way it works is one you have to have a suckle obviously then two you give it a berry after some time of it not being used the berry that chuckle is holding will turn into berry juice but if you leave the berry juice with it for even longer than that it will eventually turn into a rare candy now I admit it's not the fastest way to get rare candy certainly but it is still insanely interesting mostly because I'm fairly certain this ability is never once mentioned in the game and this feature was removed in all series entries after crystal so a bit of interesting development information we have here did you know that pokemon gold and silver were designed by only four programmers and in only a year's time now of course one of those programmers was the infamous Satori wada who famously was able to squeeze in the entire Kanto region in addition to the johto region but considering how much these four programmers were able to do in just a year things like previous gen trading the day and night cycle and all the time specific events the entire breeding system legendary dogs changing routes decorating your bedroom and shiny pokemon what they accomplished with such a small time is incredible to me these guys are the true elite for the Elite Four if you will did you ever wonder why gold and silver were picked as the titles for the gen 2 games well it's not just because of hoo Lucia's color palette you see at critique city in the game is based on the real-life city of Kyoto which has two temples on either side of the city one covered in gold and the other silver well the gold one is anyway the silver one was planned but that didn't actually work out anyway the gold temple burned down back in 1950 which is what you see in a critique but the real-life one was later rebuilt now with a phoenix statue on top which was of course the inspiration for ho-oh a reminder the number one spot isn't necessarily the most obscure thing on the list but rather the one I think is the coolest so online battling DLC chatting with friends recording Pokemon battles not usually things you associate doing in Pokemon games back on the gameboy color are they well believe it or not it was totally possible you see back in 2001 and then they'll release the game boy adaptor cable which allowed you to link your gameboy color with a phone and connect to the internet using the phone's dial-up and yes you could battle and trade pokémon with your friends over the internet download monthly updates containing news than mini-games and you could watch Pokemon battles of other players and not only all of that they even prototypes event Pokemon this way the very first over the Internet Pokemon event was giving players the GS ball
