hello everyone sean ferrick here and i'm thrilled to be telling you that this video was brought to you in partnership with surf shark but more on that now in a little bit if there's one thing you learn from spending any sort of time on the internet is that people have a lot of opinions about batman and that a lot of them are just downright wrong i'm sean this is what culture comics and here are 10 stupid arguments about batman that just don't make sense number 10 he's insane oh you mean that guy who had a psychotic break when he saw his parents shot in front of him so he decided to dedicate his life to a totally unhealthy exercise regime in order to wage a one-man war on crime and he does it while dressed as a six foot tall giant rodent this guy must be nuts right that's a common argument trotted out against the dark knight and it should be noted it's one that batman villains use all the time there are some similarities between the hero and his rose gallery that's what makes their confrontations more interesting than just him you know fighting evil dudes but the key differences between them is what makes batman the hero and the rogues the bad guys batman isn't insane it's sort of patronizing and a little bit problematic to assume that somebody who goes through massive childhood trauma is gonna go nuts and more than a little cynical to deem somebody who wants to change the world for the good as bad as the criminals they're fighting number nine the super villains exist because of him another of the most common arguments against batman is that he's to blame for the sudden uptake of super villainy in gotham city if it wasn't for the dark knights swanning about this flamboyant dress the criminal underworld would never have got the idea to take on similarly colourful personas that expand their misdemeanors to an appropriate scale again this is a position often taken by members of his rogues gallery the joker especially is fond of telling butts that they need each other that they're ying and yang that one cannot exist without the other the latter meant literally since an accident at a chemical lab involving the pair is what gave the joker his appearance in some origins obviously the real world explanation for why super villains showed up at the same time as batman was to give the character somebody appropriate to punch in universe meanwhile the world of dc is such that it can give birth to multiple different superheroes obviously it would also have the ability to create bodies and city getups too number eight he's not a real superhero how do you define a superhero superman is the first real such character to appear in comic books setting the template of a guy with heightened abilities in a cape and tights batman followed soon after and was in a similar mould however unlike the krypton born man of steel bruce wayne was very much a son of earth a regular human being so he's not really a superhero right is a superhero just somebody with powers who doesn't use them for ill that doesn't seem quite right and yet that's the justification people always give for not characterizing the caped crusader as a real superhero in the same way that they would the man of steel wonder woman or even martian manhunter it's all the more ridiculous when you consider that batman kind of does have superpowers if you quantify them as being abilities beyond most human beings nobody on earth fictional or otherwise has the martial arts training resources or deductive reasoning that batman does nor his eerily supernatural ability to always be two steps ahead of everyone whether friend or foe number seven all his enemies are the same batman has got one of the most celebrated rose galleries in superhero comics it helps that he also has one of the largest rogues galleries in superhero comics it does mean that creators ran light on ideas at times though setting aside the likes of mr freeze and such it's sometimes suggested that there's not a whole lot of difference between the joker the riddler and the penguin besides the definite articles which precede all their titles they really haven't got that much in common besides being again eccentric doers of evil it makes sense that they'd be sort of similar all coming out of the same city and whilst the riddler is pretty close to the joker's stick on paper and the penguin has an even more deformed appearance than the clown prince of crime seeing them in action just goes to show how different they are they're all a little nutty to varying degrees but the penguin is much more level-headed if angry gangster type the riddler is smug insecure and self-destructive with his intelligent employees and the joker is a pure force of chaos they actually couldn't be more different now as we mentioned today's video is brought to you in partnership with surf shock who are our favorite vpn providers here at what culture because the last time we worked together they let the jla grant morrison's defining run on jla in the early 90s suggested that while the rest of the team could be defeated using sheer strength by most comers batman's brain would always put him on top mark wade did a similar thing with his iconic tower of babel storyline which came not long after morrison's time on the book in it a super villain takes advantage of a set of fail-safes batman has set up each of which are designed to perfectly incapacitate any and all of his supposed friends the ever paranoid cape crusader set up all of these methods of essentially beating up his teammates just in case any of them ever went rogue which is where you realize that batman is far from the best member of the jla the rest of them have a mutual respect and trust for each other knowing that they can take on any threat together and always have each other's backs that's not a respect or trust that the dark knight feels for any of them he's not a team player at least historically so how can he be the best number five he's nothing without his gadgets that's the one and only reason he kinda sucks as a justice league member by the way but again there are those that will say his lack of a traditional mutation or magic born set of superhero abilities are what should render his membership null and void if pushed though those naysayers can be forced to admit that his gadgets are pretty cool and probably help him out but isn't it those gadgets that make him so formidable in the first place nary a battle goes down in a batman comic movie tv show or video game without him whipping out any number of wonderful toys from the shuriken like batarangs to adam west's infamous shark repellent butt spray here's the thing not everyone can throw a bat around successfully the marvel vs dc event proved that even master assassin bullseye who can turn anything into a weapon isn't much cop with them at least compared to the master batman's gadgets only work when batman's using them but batman works without his gadgets all that training in ninja skills and martial arts wasn't for nothing number four he can only be dark and brooding in most of his adaptations to other media batman is a singularly dower and dark figure christopher nolan's dark knight trilogy of films the principal outlook is right there in the title getting king goth tim burton to hell the earlier films probably didn't help that case much either it's an attitude that persists to this day in the minds of both fans and creators why is batman so serious well he's not not all of the time in fact batman has proven himself to be one of the most malleable experimental characters in comics creators can do just about anything with them that's why christian bale's angst ridden capes crusader is as legitimate as the dancing campy adam west batman from the 60s even everybody's favorite batman the one of the 90s animated series isn't as po-faced as all that there's plenty of angst and pathos in that show especially when it was supposedly for kids but batman smiled a lot bama does that sometimes as he should number three his parents deaths are all that fuel them the idea that batman is a perpetually angsty figure who doesn't have the time for frivolity is often tied into the argument that his whole crime-fighting career is based on unresolved grief over his murdered parents to act like the murder of his parents when he was a kid is the only thing that inspires bruce wayne to do what he does night in night out however is absurd suggesting somebody only does the right thing even to an extreme degree because they're mentally scarred is silly bruce wayne was probably always gonna have that sense of justice which is instilled in him from an early age anyway his parents death was just a catalyst number two batman is his true self bruce wayne is the mask now here's the really strong stuff the sort of cod intellectual points coined by armchair psychologists who have read a lot of comic books have a foggy memory of one psychology class they took at university and an inflated sense of self-worth get rid of your minds blown by this groundbreaking theory folks bruce wayne died the same day as his parents that billionaire playboy thing is simply a front in fact batman is his real face bruce wayne is the mask eh eh except totally not again grant morrison provided a great example of batman devoid of bruce wayne's humanity in his run on the book when the character had to reset his brain and for a while was purely a crime-fighting being bruce wayne is integral he's what keeps batman grounded and one day retiring gives him a reason to go on number one bruce wayne could do more by spending his billions instead of being batman this is a spicy take that has been doing the rounds with increased frequency over the last couple of years and it gets even more tedious each time that it does bruce wayne as the argument goes is a selfish billionaire who spends his nights indulging and violently beating up impoverished criminals when he could be putting his resources to good use working to stop the causes of crime and uplifting all of gotham citizens with his money it's an incredibly reductive take though first of all gotham city is not real batman is not real the dark knight operates in a local where giant mutant bat human hybrids and killer reptiles prey on the innocent batman is a necessary force in gotham precisely because of the extraordinary nature of the threats present throwing money at joker when he's poisoned the water supply isn't exactly the best solution ever is it even when you ignore that though this argument hinges on the notion that bruce wayne isn't charitable in the first place when he is he learned it from his parents bruce is constantly funneling money into gotham and remains incredibly invested in the recovery of arkham's patients yes his methods can be brutal but batman's mission requires a multi-faceted approach he's not at all as short-sighted as people like to believe that's everything for our list today guys now if you think we missed anything please drop it into the comments below please don't forget to like
