[Music] when it comes down to it any villains real weakness is the hero that foils their nefarious plans even if only mostly but there are other things that restrict the power of a villain or are what makes them a villain in the first place for post Silver Age comics and Marvel in particular those power restrictions can be pretty out there but also a tragic part of their character here are some of the weird power restrictions in Marvel Comics Ultron while the x-men may have their own sets of enemies the Avengers are literally the architects of their own worst enemy that enemy would be the ever persistent Ultron created by Hank Pym in the comics that's why he has an aunt like head ultron was supposed to be the super bot to help the Avengers protect the world naturally this all goes wrong and Ultron turns on the Avengers then he hypnotizes Hank Pym and makes a move on the wasp Ultron has a lot of issues to work out there was also a lot more hypnotizing in the Silver Age of comics than you think even mr. fantastic would do it making Skrulls think they were cows it was a strange time the thing that makes Ultron such a formidable foe is his own special version of Moore's law which observes that processing power doubles roughly every two years or in Ultron terms he keeps upgrading of course to do that he has to do what no one does to their computer until it almost crashes back himself up before Wi-Fi was available from every coffee shop and cell phone plan he had to keep a stored copy somewhere and now he needs an internet connection to upload himself which is how the MCU Avengers beat their Ultron juggernaut sibling rivalry can be rough especially when their superpowers involved most of the chaos that's happened in Marvel in general stems from - as guardians not being able to get along over in the mutant end of the Marvel comics there are more than a few familial relations that have had problems Professor Charles Xavier grew up to be one of the earth's most powerful telepaths and the founder of the Charles Xavier school for gifted youngsters that's cool we all wanted to go do and not just to be classmates with Kitty Pryde there were other reasons I swear his stepbrother on the other hand grew up to be bitter and resentful of Charles because his father liked him more then he found the Crimson gem of as even the most casual fan should know by now finding gems in Marvel it's bad news the gem grants mark okay near invincibility as long as he keeps his helmet on that blocks his stepbrothers mind powers he also can't stop breaking stuff not as an impulse but as a condition of the gem if he's not wrecking enough havoc sitter AK might take the gem back that's got to be an awkward HR meeting I wrecked the x-mansion three times this year yeah we feel like you could do better last year the Hulk took on a tanker brigade Grand Master some villains want power or revenge or loot or even just the sheer thrill of being a bad guy the elders of the universe like the collector and the Grandmaster end up being the bad guys kind of mostly just because they're bored the self-described oldest beings in the universe the elders are the ultimate retirees they've all picked one hobby that they decide to know everything about and become absolute masters of as the last of their species and with nearly infinite life thanks to their acquired cosmic abilities the elders of the universe have plenty of time to reach that goal as you'd expect that means they're very strict with their rules even if the rules are things they themselves make up for instance the Grandmaster has decided to become master of games which has periodically found him plucking some of our syros out and involving them in games that usually require them fighting someone else the grandmasters one strict rule is that he can't lose otherwise he's no longer the Grandmaster there's a loophole however as that's the only rule that he feels is unbreakable meaning he's not above bending or breaking the rules to maintain his unbeaten streak drawers just don't count Galactus one of the literal biggest baddies in Marvel Comics is the giant purple planet eating machine Galactus Galactus was a space traveler from a previous universe who merged with the sentience of the universe granting him incredible cosmic powers so much power in fact that he's able to pass them off making other people very powerful cosmic beings as his Herald like Silver Surfer or Nova of course to maintain that kind of power you'll need a lot of fuel since no one's selling a cereal that's part of this balanced breakfast for a being of Galactus his size and power he stuck sucking the life force out of planets whole planets at a time and it's the Herald's job to find the planet and everyone know they're doomed people from planets that didn't want to be doomed have offered to become heralds like Noren Rand who became Silver Surfer or had a herald stick up for them like Silver Surfer when Galactus came to earth these setbacks can be huge for the already huge cosmic beings because his hunger is such that he has to continuously consume and if he doesn't he'll get weaker and eventually die since he's just the universe's hungriest hippo he's ambivalent about good and bad so long as whatever it is ends in him eating you'll go along with it Green Goblin spider-man signature villain comes in the form of the father of one of his best friends Peter Parker really can't catch a break when it comes to his friends dads it seems the green goblin has alter-ego Norman Osborn's immense wealth as the head of Oscorp to support his costume villain habit making like difficult for the perpetually broke Parker that and Peter doesn't want to harm his friends dad spider-man's foes can have some pretty weighty personal stakes well it takes a degree of instability to get in a green suit and a flying pet and then try to kill a teenager in tights Osborn is in fact a special kind of unstable even when his plan is to kill spider-man he has a hard time staying on task most of this is a side effect of his already considerable intelligence being enhanced by various comic book encounters like with the gathering of the five that's left him incredibly smart but also with a loose grip on reality in fact at the end of the gathering of five Osborn essentially hallucinates that he beats spider-man instead of the other way around in order to mitigate this problem and get anything done much less Menace spider-man he wears a dermal patch that eases out a chemical which calms him down Sebastian Shaw there are more than a few x-men haters Club out there even if the leadership of a few of them ends up as leaders of the x-men now and then the Hellfire Club is one of the more long-standing groups that have a special hate for xavier z' team of talented mutants like any old world club for elite the Hellfire clubs inner circle has a hierarchy with a theme that places sebastian shaw as the black king to emma frost white queen the inner circle are a group of powerful mutants who aren't worried about integrating nor not integrating with non mutants such as they are with accumulating power they even profited off the Sentinel program which hunted mutants the head of that was Sebastian Shaw Shaw Industries Shaw's mutant powers that he absorbs kinetic energy and gets stronger the harder he's hit the stronger he gets which is pretty cool as long as someone is hitting him in his normal state he's just a regular well-connected rich guy which is a superpower all on its own if he gets hit with energy attacks or basically anything that's not like a punch he just gets hurt like the rest of us and not stronger Emma Frost the black King Sebastian Shaw is white Queen Emma Frost has not one but two sets of powers she's a powerful telepath like Xavier able to detect and control minds and protect her teammates from opposing psychics in fact she's one of the most powerful telepaths in Marvel Comics rivaling even Professor X as if that wasn't enough she can also turn her skin into his super tough diamond - like material that makes her nearly impervious to damage and we mean all damage she doesn't need to breathe or eat or anything else she's super strong and completely tireless it seems like a deal too good to be true she's able to attack and defend using psychic powers and if anyone gets any punching ideas she can turn to Diamond but she can only do one at a time it's either powerful psychic or daimond lady when she's in her diamond form she has no psychic abilities except some vulnerabilities built into being made of diamonds to use her brain powers she has to become regular skinned muscle and bones which isn't as impervious to damage her diamond self can be harmed with the right material however like a diamond to bullet everyone has a diamond bullet handy right MODOK fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been introduced to some outsized Marvel characters over the last decade or so but the movies have only really scratched the surface of how weird things can get down bad guy Lane one of the weirdest has to be MODOK the mechanized organism designed only for killing MODOK comes from the evil arms technology group aim or advanced idea mechanics which were once the sorta bad guys in Iron Man 3 not quite like the Mandarin they were real but really it was Adrian Killian and his extremity there were two great Iron Man villains in second and third billing in Iron Man 3 yeah MODOK was an employee of aim who underwent the kind of extreme experiments and evil arms technology group would do to increase its and elegance aim was looking for someone who could comprehend the Cosmic Cube what the MCU calls the tesseract not finding someone smart enough they made someone smart enough so they set to work on George Tarleton the result was that he got a big head not a thinks very highly of himself metaphorical big head no no but an actual giant refrigerator-sized head and regular man arms and legs if that's not enough he's also described as having a normal imagination Amir most of Thor's biggest foes come from Norse mythology which makes sense seeing as Thor himself comes from Norse mythology while his nefarious brother and notorious trickster Loki grabs all the headlines one of the long-standing foes of both Asgard and Thor personally are the frost giants they even have a role to play in the end times prophecy for the Asgardians the frost giants and Marvel aren't merely Thor sighs punching bags for Thor to go through they have their own heavy hitter champion in the form of Amir Amir has been around for a while in Norse mythology he's literally the first and nearly the first in Marvel as well to help create the Asgardians who eventually go on to trap him in the end this makes the Ameer a giant ice monster that hates just about everything that isn't also a giant ice monster his strength size and ability to manipulate cold makes him a formidable opponent even for Odin or the Asgard destroying Surtur and he needs that ability to generate cold because when it comes down to it he's still a giant creature made of ice who can be weakened with heat and shattered fortunately for the ancient being he can reform himself from a tiny ice fragment Mephisto with all the different dimensions that come together in the Marvel Universe there are plenty of really powerful and really nefarious creatures lurking about Doctor Strange regularly has to keep the powerful Dormammu from the Dark Dimension in Jack but there's another dweller in the dark realm with an all-too-familiar look of course we're talking about the bad guy to everybody in the Marvel Universe even other bad guys Mephisto supposedly Mephisto was created with the Marvel Universe when the being before committed suicide also creating the infinity gems his main gig is collecting corrupted Souls and corrupting souls for the collecting this puts him at odds with the Silver Surfer as Norrin Radd proves hard to corrupt and in contact with Johnny Blaze who proves really easy to corrupt and curse with the spirit of vengeance as ghostrider within his realm the Fisto has nearly unlimited power including the ability to alter its reality at will it makes him so powerful that he was able to go toe-to-toe with Galactus until the latter started talking about eating the entire realm outside his realm however he's much less powerful he's still able to use magic but it stops there he's also unable to force people into subjugation fortunately he's really good at manipulation just ask Johnny Blaze those are some of the Marvel villains with very weird power restrictions what are your favorites what would you have put
