normally when you're playing a video game you are the good guy you're out to save the day and the world is depending on you but sometimes the game tricks you about that hi folks it's falcon and today on game ranks 10 games where you didn't know you're the villain just a really quick disclaimer this video is going to contain some spoilers like a lot of the times the fake out as to who you are as the protagonist is part of the plot i know shocking so just be forewarned starting off at number 10 it's bioshock infinite now the central plot of bioshock independent itself is quite complicated it's a story about alternate dimensions and time hopping and it's basically a recipe for confusion basically what's going on here is you booker dewitt a man tasked with infiltrating the floating city of colombia to rescue a girl named elizabeth from a religious tyrant named comstock well you're just not what you seem we all knew there was something fishy going on the original bioshock left people with a lot of expectations for a big twist to show up and yeah there is a twist alright comstock and booker are the same person crazy man running a floating city is the same guy as the private eye gunning down comstock's followers this is all thanks to some crazy alternate dimension stuff you can't really explain it here so i'm not gonna try but the main thing is that the protagonist and the bad guy are the same person at the same time sure the you you play as doesn't do all the horrible stuff that comstock does but he did sell his daughter to some shady creeps no questions asked not exactly hero material you know at number nine is knights of the old republic this one's a bit of a cheat because it's more of a backstory twist you can go the entire game and be a total goody two-shoes and do nothing evil but it's such a memorable and iconic moment that i mean it really it has to be mentioned the game starts pretty standard in terms of a star wars plot it's just set thousands of years in the past from the normal star wars timeline you're a dude on a republic ship who's getting attacked by a sith lord named darth malak the main goal of the game is to collect pieces of a star map that'll lead to where malik is building a seemingly never-ending army and put a stop to it in the backstory of the game there were two jedi malek and his master revan who went out to fight a war the jedi did not want to get involved in afterwards they disappeared and came back again with an army to invade the republic revan the leader of this army was assumed to be dead before the events of the game killed after a jedi ambush after collecting the three pieces of the star map you get captured by malek and that's when the truth comes out you are actually darth revan who is brainwashed by the jedi into fighting for the republic so yeah it's less a thing where you've been doing bad stuff and you don't realize it but more of a thing where you're actually the main bad guy and didn't realize it it was kind of a totally crazy twist that nobody was expecting and it went down in star wars history as one of the better plots at number eight is spec ops the line this is a classic example though i doubt this really surprised anyone i mean if you know anything about spec ops the line it's probably that it is a subversion itself of the military shooter genre how does it poke fun at military shooter tropes well by making the man guy believe them of course the plot of spec ops is deceptively simple you play as walker a special forces guy has been sent to a sandstorm annihilated dubai where he's supposed to link up with a force of stranded american soldiers the game pulls a pretty clever trick in slowly ramping up the bad deeds your character does at first he's seemingly fighting terrorists then he's defending himself against the american soldiers that he's here to rescue and then he takes some pretty dark turns into killing innocent people the game just throws you into one morally compromised sequence after another and it just gets worse and worse as the game goes on and your character's demeanor changes along with it becoming more brutal and unhinged in his animations and dialogue all the while walker believes he's the hero even though the events of the game clearly show otherwise so yeah if you went into this one not knowing about any of that which to be honest is kind of unlikely then yeah you have no idea that walker was the bad guy and number seven is shadow of the colossus in shadow of the colossus a boy named wander wants to revive girl who is chosen as a sacrifice because she's cursed but the only way to do it is to destroy these creatures called colossus in a mysterious place called the forbidden land the setup's pretty similar to the previous game by team ico called wealth aiko in which a boy tries to save a young girl who's considered cursed but while the hero of aiko is revealed to be doing the right thing the things the main character does here are a lot more questionable all of the colossus you encounter seem to be minding their own business some attack you on sight but many will completely ignore you unless you attack them either way it's you that is hunting them down and not the other way around what makes things even more questionable is that you're doing this on behalf of a pretty sinister voice named dorman a shadowy creature that probably doesn't have the main character's best interests at heart at the end of the day you're playing as a character who doesn't mind killing a bunch of creatures many of which seem like they just want to be left alone because a spooky voice promises you that it will be worth it at the end of the game it's fairly obvious that you're not the good guy in this situation and number six is dark souls now this one's very open to interpretation because the story of the dark souls games is super vague like really really vague with intentionally contradictory information that makes it so you're always questioning exactly what it is you're accomplishing just to lay the groundwork a little in the dark souls series you play as the chosen undead a guy who is afflicted with a weird sickness that'll eventually lead to you and everyone else becoming mindless husks called hollows the games always end with a choice too you either link the flame and keep the current age hobbling along or let the flame die out and bring about the age of dark the choice might seem pretty obvious at first the age of dark is described as a desolate and dead world bathed in perpetual darkness that sounds crappy so link the flame obviously does the problem is that the world as we see it is already dying linking the flame is basically like keeping someone who's brain dead on life support there's an argument to be made in either direction and either choice can be seen as good or bad that's not even counting the bad stuff you end up doing though you end up fighting a lot of things in the series that just want to be left alone for instance a lot of these things are doing what they do for noble reasons too like the most tragic is probably the gray wolf by the name of sif who is only trying to loyally guard its master's grave how can you not feel like the bad guy when you're fighting this poor thing near the end of the battle it starts limping and struggling to keep fighting but if you want to move forward you have to kill it the dark souls stories are basically ones where very few actual good guys exist and you're probably not one of them and number five is crackdown the story to the original crackdown is about as basic as it gets you're an agent for the agency who has to take out three gangs controlling pacific city that's it there's really nothing else going on you just jump around blowing everything up and have fun taking down the bad guys that is until you get to the ending after completely clearing out all the districts of all the gangs you're hit with this random revelation that the agency is actually evil and was supplying the gangs with weapons the entire time also they could make the city fall into chaos and then come in and clean everything up so everyone would think they're actually the good guys so yeah you're totally the bad guys sure a game where you play as a super powered cop whis free reign to kill every criminal they see might be a little eyebrow raising but there is nothing that hints at this ending at all no foreshadowing no little information drops even crazier the ending is all but ignored in the third crackdown game where the agency is just straight up depicted as good guys again so i mean good guys bad guys it doesn't really matter in the world of crackdown you just end up blowing everything up anyway and number four is no more heroes now the original no more hero seems like a pretty standard action game at first in it you play as a guy named travis touchdown as he tries to become number one ranked assassin in santa destroy and yeah he's an abrasive [ __ ] but not obviously a bad guy but this is a pseudo51 game the guy who made games like killer 7 and the silver case and if you know anything about those games you know that this well things are gonna get weird and they do to be honest travis is pretty questionable from the start he bought a sword off ebay and decides to become an assassin to impress a girl and not even like in a sweet lovey kind of way he's just horny as hell for this woman who is obviously manipulating his violent tendencies for her own benefit just the fact that travis so easily transitions from loser otaku to violent killer is pretty questionable but by the end of the game he is actually stone cold killing his own half sister with pretty much no remorse the game ends with travis taking on his own completely unmentioned up to that point twin brother who's disgusted by what travis has become even going as far as saying you're a disgrace to yourself and those who you killed harsh harsh but fair at number three is final fantasy tactics advanced here's another debatable one because the game doesn't really treat the main character like they're doing something villainous but it still rubbed players the wrong way this is a final fantasy tactics game for the gameboy advance and has a pretty lighthearted story until you hit the big twist in that the world you're in is actually a fantasy world like literally a fantasy the main characters all existed in the quote-unquote real world before being dropped into the fantasy world of ivalus in this world one character is a hero who was constantly being bullied in the real world another character can walk now rather than use a wheelchair and even the main character's dad is doing a lot better here so what does the main character do when he finds this all out well destroy it all of course the game's story is supposed to be about rejecting a happy fantasy and accepting a less ideal reality which is a good message but the way it's told really made a lot of players really dislike the main character part of the argument that this fantasy world is bad is that it's just escapism and he's at least seemingly saying the very concept of escapism is bad in a video game which is i mean literally escapism itself this is one game where the hero thinks he's doing the right thing but most players felt quite the opposite personally i actually kinda side with the main character i don't fully agree that escapism itself is bad but what is real to me tends to matter more than a happy fantasy eh maybe i'm the villain too at number two is braid an indie game that is a classic last minute twist situation it's abstract but the final message is really blunt your main dude isn't the hero rescuing the princess he is a creep who will not leave her alone the story is simple you play as a dude named tim who is trying to rescue a princess who appears to be being held captive by some ugly monster dude how you do this is by solving puzzles with time-based powers throughout the game you're given little snippets of text that seem to reveal tim and the princess's relationship and the further you go the worse this stuff makes tim look it all culminates in the final stage of course where you see that instead of the princess running towards you she's actually running away and that you are the monster that she's been trying to get away from it's literally a no john you are the demons situation now further revelations complicate things and it's possible the game isn't really about any of that at all but the central metaphor of a dude chasing a girl who wants nothing to do with him is still here and in that situation at very least he is definitely not the good guy and finally at number one is near near is a super interesting game because you can go through the entire thing thinking that you're just the standard hero doing the right thing it is not until you play through the game a second time that you realize just how wrong you are the original nir has a seemingly straightforward story you play as a dad who wants to save his daughter from a deadly illness known as the black scrawl and you kind of have to deal with all these mysterious creatures called the shades it's pretty normal until you play through the game a second time which is when the other shoe drops basically the shades you've been fighting are actually people with their own motives and reasons for doing things often acting in self-defense because your main character has been relentlessly slaughtering them many of the events are shown again from the enemy's perspective revealing your character as being selfish and short-sighted this is a game where you think you're saving mankind but instead you end up dooming it to extinction that's about as unknowingly villainous as you can get that's to say nothing about the events of nier automata well that's all for today leave us a comment let us know what you think
