some of the best rivalries in video game history happened inside the story between two characters and some don't some of the biggest battles of personality in video game history happen in speed running happen in competitive play and happen right out in the public hi folks it's falcon and today on game ranks the five greatest real life rivalries in video game history starting off at number five it's goon swarm vs pappy in eve online i think we've all heard about the biggest and most expensive battle in eve online history obviously warships cost money not in-game money real money i mean they cost in-game money too but that money cost money but there was a battle between goon swarm and pappy that there is so much going on between goon swarm as you might be able to guess from the name originally formed on the something awful forums the goons as users are called there but they have been around forever was playing eve online way back in 2005. pappy on the other hand is a loose coalition which literally exists basically to exterminate goon swarm the leader of pappy philly was once a fleet commander in goon swarm and he had to take a long break from goom and swarm activities because he actually had to be deployed for the military which is obviously a life risking thing that you do not have a choice about but when he got back goonsworm did not want him to participate anymore which is frankly not cool so instead he decided to create his own army and did they've been battling in various ways for many years now and they burn tons of money in what seems to just be an endless feud it's pretty wild but it's also kind of the point of the game at number four in final fantasy vii there was a level 99 reactor grudge match that frankly is insane this is an entirely spite fueled prospect and frankly is pretty amazing an internet user by the name of dick tree which by the way great name dick posted a topic claiming he was going to reach level 99 in the first reactor of final fantasy vii now just so you're aware every battle in that reactor gives the party around 80 xp so not a lot but in order to get to level 99 you need 2 452 783 xp so doing the math it's about 30 660 battles if we are gracious and assume every battle takes about 45 seconds now just to be fair we have to say that once you get past a certain level they are going to be very quick battles so the average is gonna be pretty low still that would take about 16 days of straight grinding to do without factoring in the time between battles we are not factoring in loading we are not factoring in the running that you would need to do to trigger the battles and dick tree wrote a check that he did not cash he would make progress on it sure but he would disappear for months on end or just troll people and there was another user who is so infuriated by this so spiteful he registered an account on the forums and said dick tree i should do this so from january 2015 to march 2017 circle master did do it two years two years of grinding just despite dick tree and he completed it level 99 in the first reactor we salute you circlemaster not only for reaching level 99 but for showing people they should not talk big unless they can back it up at number three is the anti 1.000 alliance now mario kart 64 is obviously a big thing for speedrunners there are tons of amazing players constantly looking to get world record times for each track and for a really long time world records were held by a variety of different players until well the best guy showed up matthias rustmeyer is a german speedrunner that frankly he's so good he almost got all 32 mario 64 world records the perfect 1.000 and yes i like saying it that way i don't care if you say it differently it sounds much more important but he almost really became the only player ever to do that and we're talking on every trick with without shortcuts or whatever but the mario kart 64 community was like actually no we don't want one guy to hold all of this so the anti 1.00 alliance was formed essentially several speedrunners worked together to knock out matthias's world record time however matthias would quickly recapture them because he is amazing like even with a coalition of players attempting to beat his times matthias managed to earn every world record except for one but that last world record did end up being his downfall other players did manage to crack his almost perfect 3132 world record and he never actually recovered and here's the thing he's probably one of the nicest people out there he enjoyed the challenge and the community loved his participation keeping up the perfect world record run out of his hands wasn't personal it was actually a point of pride for the community including him just the pure spirit of competition in a sportsman like what if only everything was like that at number two is jack thompson i mean we're gonna say versus rockstar but jack thompson if you don't know who jack thompson is uh congratulations your life is better i'm about to make it worse though so in the early 2000s there was always talk of jack thompson because jack thompson was always always working to undermine video game companies that had violence or sex in video games because he was a 90s leftover who was just obsessed he's also a lawyer or was a lawyer rather basically the people he tried to pick on the most were rockstar games which he was constantly filing lawsuits against he would constantly try to link playing the grand theft auto series to doing a real-life murder which by the way absolutely no evidence supports the idea that's even possible if that were possible basically all media would be transforming way more people into just stone cold murderers at all times because there's so much debt so much murder in all types of media books tv movies and you know what that doesn't happen in fact there's less violent crime now than there was years ago and there's significantly more video games where there are murder that are high profile and making more money than have ever happened before now then then like probably the peak jack thompson move was sending personal letters to take two's ceo's mother to try to shame her into disciplining him which is the funniest idea like paul zelnick is an adult and wasn't adult at the time much as yes adults do care about what their mothers think and say you can't shame a mother into controlling a massive multinational corporation it doesn't work that way rockstar has obviously also taken a few satirical shots at this guy in their video games like in grand theft auto the protagonist has to be killing a lawyer at a certain point and a certain lawyer says a certain thing that jack thompson constantly said in real life which was guns don't kill people video games do now if you consider the us drone pilot control program a video game yes they do however most people don't consider that a video cam they consider like grand theft auto these virtual worlds video games jack thompson's full crap he's always been full of crap and he got officially recognized as being full of crap when he was disbarred in 2008 because of the following reason intimidation lying under oath libel distribution of obscene materials and it actually goes on from there he has since then basically wandered around in shame probably wondering why he spent his life doing that and finally at number one is sega vs nintendo you cannot imagine the console wars in the 1990s if you were not there it's so much more than it was now yes there is a lot of brand loyalty and a lot of crazy things are said on a fairly constant basis but you just don't know until you've seen a genesis does what nintendo's advertisement we're talking about back in the day when it did not matter nobody gave an act let's say nowadays there is at least a kind of tacit oh we're all gamers which is by the way probably much better much healthier i respect my friends who play xbox more than playstation or play consoles more than pc my preference does not make them less of a gamer in my eyes also i did not actually just tell you my preference just so you're aware i randomized that a little bit if this were the 1990s i would not have done that i would have said i'm sega i play sonic i'm cool i got a tude you suck nintendo now keeping in mind i also played nintendo if you got into an argument with me i'd say things like that i was also a kid and kids are a lot more confrontational also advertisements definitely had more of an effect on me and they were really riling us up against each other despite the fact that i love the super nintendo simcity and still love it to this very day probably my favorite sim city it wasn't just sega launching attack ads like a literal political campaign though if you recall the big controversy about mortal kombat that more or less eventually led to the creation of the esrb nintendo blamed sega so much for this because they allowed mortal kombat on their platform now unfortunately sega made a series of decisions regarding console launches which were totally insane but their marketing campaign was actually pretty on point it worked anyways at least through the genesis era now nintendo's still around publishing amazing games and consoles like the nintendo switch and sega is also still around working with them honestly like i said this era is for all intents and purposes much better and healthier but it was wild and i remember it and i participated in it how about you do you remember any
