all right it is time to use those clear blue tiles and put them to work to create your own all-over or custom quilting now all of these things that i'm going to show you in the next few minutes are found as a step-by-step by step instruction as you've come to expect from kimber bell in your user guide but right now i just want us to think about us being friends right we're just friends sitting side by side in your sewing room and kim is going to show you how easy this is to do so i'm ready to go i've got my fabric that i'm turning into a quilt sandwich i've got my clear blue tiles that will fit in the hoops that i have uh you know again they work from your smallest hoops like a 4x4 this one actually i'm going to use as a 5x7 all the way up to the largest of hoops um i've got my marking pin so ready to go i've got my usb stick ready to put into my machine so i could pull up the exact files i need i've got my usb sticks you'll see are not usb sticks my slap bands so that you can see how we use those and then of course your instruction user guide so we are ready to get started let's go ahead and take a look here at my quilt top i'm gonna set these things aside here set my clear blue tiles aside oh and i've also got my plastic template grid so again if you don't have one of these it's okay no worries we'll show you in a different video an alternative if you don't have this but today i am going to use it all right now i've got my quilt here and what i am going to do well what i'm going to show you what i've done here is i've actually already created my quilt sandwich all right what a quilt sandwich is is that you've got your backing fabric which i have here and i've laid the right side of my fabric facing down okay again right side is down so that means the wrong side is facing up that's the back of my fabric i've actually cut this piece of fabric to be about three inches larger than my quilt top on all four sides okay the next layer in my quilt sandwich is my batting and we actually highly recommend our kimber bell project batting the loft on this is perfect for quilting in the hoop and so this is what we would suggest you use if you need a larger piece of batting that that you're you know you've got a larger project to do and you don't have enough batting you could certainly sew pieces of batting together to create that one larger piece right now all i needed is this one piece okay and then finally i've got the top of my quilt this is what we would call the quilt top it's my fabric that has already been pieced together as we've mentioned before you can use this on you know you can use this background quilting on not only your quilts but your table toppers your bench pillows your um you know anything that you need quilting on you can use this method what we suggest is that you actually do something that's about 60 by 60 inches or less just because the weight of the quilt gets to be really heavy um and there could be some pull on your on your design on the machine so what we recommend is a 60 by 60 inch like lab quilt or wall hanging or smaller okay now i've got all of those things put together i've actually um basted all three layers of that together of your quilt sandwich with a basting spray so that is just a spray you can find at your your favorite quilt shop and i just quickly sprayed all three layers stuck them together and now that's going to help prevent shifting okay in the user guide we give you a few other ideas of what you can do to keep those layers together and prevent shifting now the other thing i want to do is actually take my kimber bell paper tape of course right and i want to lay this paper tape right along the outer edge of my the top of my quilt so see right here i'm going to lay this about an eighth of an inch from the perimeter let's go ahead and show you see i'm just right up against that edge i don't want to go too far into my quilt because you are going to quilt over this but being about an eighth of an inch in the uh away from the edge is perfect all right um the next thing i want to do is maybe take if i've got additional batting showing i can also take an additional piece and lay that on top of the batting between the batting and the backing fabric okay what this does is that it's going to prevent your presser foot from catching to that edge of your batting or your backing or even your quilt top and keep it nice and flat and smooth and then you can easily remove the tape afterwards all right so once again my backing fabric is about three inches larger than my quilt top my batting piece is approximately an inch larger than my quilt top and then of course i've got the quilt top itself all right okay one other thing to to note at this point is that a lot of people will say well where is the stabilizer well the good news is if you're doing a quilt sandwich like this and using this batting the the nice part is that you don't have to have any additional stabilizer added to this the three layers alone are going to stabilize those quilting designs just perfectly so don't worry about a stabilizer now another type of quilting that we'll we'll show you a little bit later um you will use a stabilizer but for now with clear blue tiles no stabilizer is needed all right so now i've got everything taped down put together my quilt sandwich is ready to be marked now there's two types of quilting that we talk about in the user guide there is your repeated all-over quilting and then there is your custom all-over quilting now the difference is is just like the name implies a repeated quilt design is going to have the same design from the one edge of your quilt all the way to the other edge of your quilt it's the same thing repeated over and over and you certainly can do it that way or if you want a more customized look you can do it where you take um you know a specific um quilt tile size and place it exactly where you want that quilting to go and then maybe another part of the quilt has a totally different size of tile as a different design and such i'll show you some examples here in just a minute now no matter which method you go for whether it's the all over repeated or the custom all-over um you are always going to want to start in the center of your quilt okay and then you work your way out so for example i'm going to start here and just move my stuff here and i'm going to go find approximately the center of your quilt okay now you'll notice that i've got some markings already on here but let's pretend like those markings aren't there and i want to do an all-over uh quilting a repeated quilting okay what i will do is i will always use this is what we suggest and you'll understand why here in a minute always start with the largest hoop size you have if you're doing all over quilting okay because the larger your hoop the less hoopings there are to do right so i will always start at the center of my quilt with the largest hoop size that i have available to me and i will work my way out all right now that's going to change a little bit if you're doing custom quilting but again you're still starting in the center of your quilt project all right now i'm actually going to do a custom quilt here so that means i'm going to set my larger tiles aside and i know that i want to use my 5x7 hoop for this all right because these blocks that i want to quilt are smaller than the 5x7 so i'm going to take my quilt tile this is a 4x4 because this is actually measures as a 4x4 quilt block right it's actually four and a half by four and a half but once it's sewn in it's the 4x4 size all right now i want to quilt just that design or just my design on that particular block so i'm going to place my tile right on top of it notice how it fits perfectly within the parameters and then i'm going to take my water soluble pen and i'm going to make a few markings i'm going to mark the center point that's the first thing i'm going to do then i'm going to mark the crosshair lines right and i can do that just like so don't forget to mark your arrow okay that's going to be really important because as i mentioned in an earlier video your arrow always points to the top of your hoop okay and then another important mark is to mark this as a 4x4 in this window and i've already done that here okay so whatever you see here on the tile is what you're going to write in this little window okay four by four as you see there and then you'll know what file size to bring up on your machine i'm going to look for the 4x4 size file size okay now there's a few other markings that you can do as this especially is important when you're doing an all-over quilting design now i'm within the parameters of this block so you know i could do it i don't have to do it but let's always get in the habit of also marking your corners so whenever you see these blue lines right here at each corner you're going to see them on the sides you're going to see them on the corners i want you to just mark your corners on the outside edge okay there we go again because i know it's going to stay within the parameters of this block it's probably not necessary but it's always a good habit to get into and you'll see why um you know in just a little bit okay so i've marked my cross hairs i've marked my center point i've made sure i marked my arrow i marked my corner edges and my side edges now i can remove this tile and i know that when i go to hoop this my quilting design is going to land exactly in that spot now that my block is all marked i could at this point go to my machine make sure and hoop all three layers of my quilt sandwich and and bring up my 4x4 file and stitch it out but i could also do something even simpler by marking my entire quilt all at the same time so that i don't have to go back and forth and back and forth so let me show you um what i'm going to do next so let's go ahead and go back down here to the quilt and i'm going to take again my 4x4 block tile and because i want to pull up maybe a different design um again we're custom quilting this design i'm going to do as my swirls and my flowers and maybe the in this block i just want swirls okay so i can do that because i've taken my four by four tile i'm going to mark it again oh don't forget that center point okay that's where your needle is gonna drop so that's important to mark i'm gonna mark my arrow okay i'm gonna mark all those crosshairs again don't forget to mark four by four because i have to know i've got to remember when i oh how's that for writing upside down there we go i have to remember that when i go to remove this what file size am i needing oh it says it right there it's the 4x4 okay and then i'm going to mark my corners [Music] corner corner and my sides all right that's all you need is just those all those markings remove it and i can go on to my next block and mark that okay now here's where custom quilting can get really fun because my next set of blocks next to this four patch is actually an 8 by 8 inch block all right well maybe i want to do this in a design that has loops i don't i already used flowers i already used um swirls maybe but now i want to just use loops whatever you want okay i can take my eight eight eight by eight inch tile place it down here on my quilt block because this is an eight by eight inch size boom place it right there what am i gonna do first i am going to mark the center point because that's where my needle drops i'm going to mark my arrow and my lines okay it's an 8 by 8 inch block so i'm gonna mark eight by eight okay and finally i'm going to mark my corners and my sides okay and then i can remove that so because i have done all those markings right now and i put what file size i need i can easily just go to my machine one time and hoop this and find the exact name of the file on my machine that i am using on my quilt i want you to think about clear blue tiles like this if this this helps give you a visual if this were a stamp if you will okay the stamp that we want to put down in a big bed of ink and then stamp it on our quilt right if i were to take this clear blue tile and put it in some ink and then stamp it onto my quilt that is exactly where the the embroidery design is going to land okay so think of it like a stamp and wherever this tile whatever area it covers no matter what size the tile is that's where your quilting design is going to land okay so just another way to think about it all right so what happens when you are working your way out okay say let's go back to an all-over quilting design and you're starting in the center and you work your way out and work your way out and you get to the end that's when maybe you have just a little piece of fabric left that needs to be quilted no problem just grab a smaller tile place it on that area again it's like that stamp and it is going to quilt that design exactly where you placed it and because all the designs are the same scale then you're never going to see where one stamp ended or one quilting design ended and one began they're all specially digitized to go right up to the very parameters of the area that you're quilting all right so feel free to quilt off the hoop too or not off the hoop but off the quilt itself that's why you have that extra fabric too because you can cool off of it and then it cuts down to size at the very end when you go to do your quilt top and binding all right okay so we have marked our spaces and now we're ready to hoop this so let me show you how i do that now in this example here i'm going to use my 4x4 design so i want to have my 5x7 hoop ready to go okay and i'm going to pop out the rings of course and loosen it up just a tad okay because again we've got to get all three layers in there right and this is the top of my hoop now uh one thing to know is that if you've got hoops that have arrows make sure the arrows of your inner hoop ring matches the arrow of your outer hoop ring and that becomes the top of your hoop that's why we have the arrows also marked on the quilt right now the other thing is that this is where my plastic grid will come to put into play so i can place that right on top here of my inner ring and then um be able to find the center okay so i'm going to place the the bottom ring underneath my world sandwich okay you gotta finagle this just a little bit it gets easier with practice i promise so and because i'm trying to do this upside down that's even worse right so if i can do it upside down you can certainly do this right okay do you see that i am trying to get this so that i have my center point let's see i want to show you where i'm looking here i want my center point to line up with the circle on my grid here and then i want my cross hairs to line up with the cross hairs here and because my arrow is pointing up and of course my top of my hoop is right here i know that's where i want to place it so it looks like we're pretty good there yep sure enough i'm going to place that in there if you need to go ahead and tighten that your hoop back up again and then remove this and now i know that that center dot i've got a couple there i'll just put it right there in the middle okay that center dot is at the center of your hoop it's also the center of your design and that is where the needle is going to drop okay again you've got all three layers ready to go alright so i've been working my way out to the outer edges of this quilt top it's so fun watching this come together i'm ready to quilt my next block um over here that's uh ready it's already marked i made sure that with my plastic grid that the center point was smack in the middle there everything lined up i've got my arrow pointing towards the top of my hoop that's kind of upside down for you but it is towards the top the arrow matches that and i'm ready to hoop this oh i can't wait to to see the rest of this design okay now you may be wondering what are the slide downs for i'm glad you asked the slap bands well we found them to be very useful when it comes to rolling up any of your excess part of your quilt underneath the throat of your machine so you as you know your machine throughout space is only so much and so if you have a big bulky project going back and forth to um being embroidered it can become a little cumbersome so what we do is we just roll up the excess portion of our quilt just like so and then we put a slot down around it easy as that okay that's just going to prevent it from getting in our way in fact i could do that at the bottom here too if i wanted and put the extra slack band around that all right our slack bands are in place our quilt is ready to be stitched onto all right so i pulled up my four by four file again if you have a larger size hoop and you want to do all over uh quilting then certainly start with that largest hoop but as you get into the smaller areas of your quilt top and you want to do something more custom then you can go with the smaller tiles all right so i'm going to first drop my needle down and make sure oh my gosh that's perfect perfect okay it hit exactly where i needed to hit at that center point now don't become too crazy with this if it's just up slightly off you certainly can you know shift your needle around a little bit and not have to re-hoop this you don't want to have to worry about this too much but the point is is that your needle drops down in that center and then you're ready to stitch your design so i'm going to put my foot down i'm actually going to stitch this in black thread just so that you can see it more clearly you know if i were to to do this for my own quilt i might do something a little more subtle like a white thread maybe even a light blue or even a yellow to match the rest but let's take a look of it look at it in black and because we used the 4x4 file size it's going to stitch perfectly within that 4x4 block [Music] all right my next block is done let's take a look at it all right so i did stitch in black so that you could see that better but look how it falls just within those parameters of that 4x4 block because i use the 4x4 tile now your your tiles are going to you know go really close to the outer edge and then in and then close and and it just kind of ebbs and flows um within each block but once you line up tile after tile after tile then uh you're never going to be able to see where it actually starts and where it ends pretty cool stuff all right here you can see that when we use the eight by eight inch block tile and we did it in the blue thread but you can see that it just all flows it's beautiful if i wanted to use a different design just within that block i certainly could do that because i am doing custom quilting all right so let's set that aside and i want to show you some examples from a project that actually also is included in the essential set you will be able to make this darling table runner um i think we call it seasons for home these seasons of home and this is a runner that we did in little house blocks and tree blocks and uh the fun part about this is you'll actually be able to piece these blocks also in the hoop um in the directions found on your usb so that's pretty exciting and once you piece those blocks together uh again all in the hoop then you can put your whole table topper or table runner uh together and then be able to make your quilt sandwich and have the look of traditional quilting so here's a look at what the top of your table runner would look like before the quilting and then here's a look by the magic of television right it's all done isn't that beautiful there are so many possibilities with these table toppers you know we used just different colors of fabric um with each season and it gave it an entirely new look and then we used the background quilting designs for each season and it also just added to that that look of each topper so very fun stuff let me show you um the difference between having an all-over quilting look and then a custom quilting look so in this example here i'm going to show you uh that this we did an all-over design okay we started here in the center with one of our uh tiles let me show you here's an example and then we worked our way out from edge to edge now say for example you have this is the biggest hoop you can fit okay the biggest tile you can fit in your hoop i should say you could start it here on the edge but now you have this empty gap and you're thinking what am i supposed to do with that empty gap i don't have a large enough hoop no problem all you have to do is grab another one of your tiles that would fit in that area okay you could even do a tile that's larger than the quilt top because remember we have that backing fabric that's larger than our quilt top and it will just quilt right off the top of it so it's going to look like your quilting goes right off the edge of your quilt which is really a fun look okay so you can fill in any gaps that you have with another tile now the reason why you may be wondering well why did we have to mark those edges in those corners well before i mentioned that uh you were you were marking that on a block that already you know was a four by four inch block in in that example and so we knew where the edges of our quilt design was going to go but if you're doing an all-over quilting and you've got this one tile that you want to use you'll want to mark those corner edges because that's going to show you where you can place your next tile and your next tile and your next house so say for example i marked here okay then i take it away well if i didn't have those corner blocks marked i wouldn't know where the design ended right and where it can begin again so by marking those corners and those sides i know exactly where i can place my next tile mark it mark the corners and sides place it again mark the corner and sides all right so there's actually um a an example in your book of how we did that uh with some step-by-step photos so that'll make it a little uh easier okay so again this was an all-over quilting design let me show you what we did with a few different fabrics here and did a custom quilting design so we used the same table uh runner but we used our bumblebee design for some of these blocks so as you can see here we've got bumblebees but then i said you know what let's go ahead and just do loops in some of these blocks so we took a different tile we have an example here we took a different tile that fit just that tree and remember i mentioned it's kind of like a stamp well i know that it falls in those parameters so i can use that tile just for that area and do a totally different uh quilting design okay but next to it i want to do the bumblebees again so i just take my 4x4 tile and place it there now it's time to do my border blocks well i could take a border block design file let's see let's use this one here this is a 2 by 10 inch and i can place it look at that it fits perfectly along that border so i can use that but my goodness how cute would it be to do something different in these corner blocks i can do that with my little itty bitty what we call the bitty blocks right and i can take my two by two tile place it right there and with one of my bitty blocks i could also um add in a special unique design just for that area so again whether you do all over quilting the same design over and over and over again or custom quilting where you do your borders and your sashing your blocks your corner blocks all differently it's entirely up to you that's what is so fun about using clear blue tiles alright now let me show you a couple more examples um of some all-over designs this is the same table runner this is the halloween look to it just by changing up the fabrics and then we use the candy corn design like you see here to go all over the top okay from edge to edge but then we did a winter scene and this we took our same files changed it into blues pinks and grays and look how gorgeous that snowflake design is on there we used that same design throughout this whole center area but then we took a different design for the borders of just the swirls and then we did a special little snowflake block for that corner all right so there you have it all the different ways you can use clear blue tiles custom custom wise or an all-over design too now let's take a look at a few other ideas you can use clear blue tiles for besides just quilting your quilts have i mentioned lately how much i love clear blue tiles yes i absolutely love them because they're so versatile as well so besides just your quilt projects and your table runners table toppers pillows you name it there's so many other things you can use clear blue tiles for if you want to add a design element to maybe a pre-made item such as let's let's use this tote bag for example we just used a regular canvas tote bag from from kimberbell and look at this quilting design that we added to this we were able to do this because clear blue tiles is like a stamp and wherever i place this tile that means that's where it's going to be quilted so we could do a combination of tiles one right after the other and have a halloween design that is so cute all over this plain canvas tote bag all right this by the way is one of our quilting designs found at kimberbell.com all right here's another tote bag but instead of putting it directly on the toe we actually added a pocket and isn't that darling for it with a christmas design the candy canes and peppermints there with the swirls we've placed it all around at that tote but in a pocket format now speaking of pockets look at what we did with this apron here's a little garden apron and again placed pockets and used background quilting designs to add just a little bit of extra pizzazz to that garden apron we took a little mini pillow just our little fireflies there and placed it just as the design itself there was nothing added to it there was no extra embellishments but isn't that gorgeous just as an embroidery design all on its own uh for a little mini pillow we did the same with this a little table topper here we just added a checkered border but then did a little more subtle quilting in the background there with a white thread and you can see the little candy canes on that now another idea is to take you know our our zipper blanks we have these beautiful um velveteen zipper blanks and we turned them into um you know just a totally different type of piece just by adding in some background quilting design so here's some little bees that we quilted on the velveteen and now you've got the perfect little zipper tote we even took an apron you'll see the apron in our user guide and we wanted to add just a little a little bit of quilting designs across the hem of the apron we even added them to the straps of the apron using the border block files and even on the neck strap of the apron added a little bit of quilting and just by using the clear blue tiles so there's so many ways you can use them i can't wait to see how you use clear blue tiles [Music] you
