with the confidence that your holy spirit will guide us into all truth so we ask for your holy spirit that you may use us according to your good pleasure we also ask that you will bless everyone that is joining us help them also to understand and see wonderful things in your scriptures in jesus name amen amen amen we all worship something now years ago i used to say if you want to find out what people worship look at their checkbook but who use checkbooks anymore some people still do once in a while somebody might say to me write me a check and that sends me into a tailspin because i'm starting to forget what a checkbook looks like but if you want to find out what people worship maybe you might look at their credit card statement or maybe you might look at their phones to see there's a new thing on apple many of you probably know about this it's called screen time and it will tell you how long you've been on a particular app on your phone and i would haste to say that if you look at some people's phones that have that feature turned on you'll say ah they've been on facebook a lot longer they've been in their bible or l and white app something always pulls our attention and it tends to take precedence over the place that belongs to the lord alone on memory text is in first chronicles 16 and verse 29 i'll read that in your hearing if you'd like to join us there this is a beautiful passage the bible tells us in first chronicles 16 29 give to the lord the glory do his name bring an offering and come before him o worship the lord in the what panel beauty of holiness for whatever reason satan has tried to paint holiness as an ugly thing or worship as a terrible thing sometimes people approach worship as what do i have to give up well when you recognize that the greatest beauty and greatest joy is in the experience of worship it is something you would want to haste to something you'd want to do with um with an exuberance and a joy looking forward to it when you look at the jewish culture they would prepare for sabbath worship and they would begin on wednesday so they wouldn't wait till friday the preparation day they would be done by the preparation day because they they literally celebrated the sabbath sabbath worship people today tend to decide to pick the day they want to worship but the reality of it is we'll find out in a in a newer translation of a particular book i'll share with you in a moment here that worship is not something that happens on a only on a particular day but when you become a christian you are worshipped you're worshiping the lord all the time that's right everything you do is an act of worship towards the lord but i want to share with you worship in the noun sense and in the verb sense and the noun worship is the feeling or expression of reverence and adoration for a deity the freedom the feeling of ex or expression of reverence and adoration for a deity and so yes uh it should bring a a sense of awe and reverence when we are in the presence of the lord but feeling shouldn't be the primary focus that's right sometimes people make feeling the primary focus and they would listen to a message that's replete with beautiful examples of christ and what we should do but some people say well i didn't feel that well the caution is while the word feeling is included in this definition don't allow feeling to be the primary focus of your worship the verb is also to show reverence and adoration for a deity through a religious ritual and that ritual will be worshiped worship is a part of humanity it's a part of everybody's life it's a part of human nature everybody has something that naturally draws them but wrongly understood it could draw them to something that they might consider worship when in fact it's just an addiction some people do things out of uh what they call a repetitious clock some people go to church because their parents did and their parents parents did and so on and so forth but they never make a connection to the one that they're supposed to worship so some people know their doctrines back and forth even in our church 28 fundamentals some people can recite them back and forth but they've never come to the place where they are beyond intellect to where their heart is filled with the desire to worship the lord worship another definition is whatever we love the most whatever we focus on the most and give our attention to the most whatever we live for that is what we worship but when you look at the bible worship is mentioned 197 times in varying will worship worshipping and i thought wow that's a lot you find that worship is a very primary thing but go to genesis 22 verse 5-8 and i'll show you one of the core truths about worship it's found in the very first reference of worship in the bible one of the first references about worship the core truth about worship is listed here verse 5 of genesis 22 it speaks about abraham and isaac and abraham said to his young men stay here with the donkey by the way the lord impressed him to go ahead and sacrifice his son isaac so he's journeying now to this place where the lord told him to go he's going now to the place of sacrifice and the bible says the lad and i will go yonder and worship and we will come back to you so abraham took the wood and the burnt offering and laid it on isaac his son and he took the fire in his hand and a knife and the two of them went together but isaac spoke to abraham his father and said my father and he said here i am my son then he said look the fire and the wood but where is the lamb for a burnt offering and i love this and abraham said my son god will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering so the two went together when i look at this what i discovered and the lord impressed me as i studied this verse sacrifice always precedes worship right sacrifice always precedes worship worship that does not have a price will not yield any interest worship that does not cost you something will not yield any interest right so in this particular story the lord wanted to see how far abraham was willing to go to prove that he was willing to worship the lord at any cost and that's the key and this is vital today because a lot of people say well i would worship on the sabbath but i have to go to work but i have a class but it's my most convenient day to shop it doesn't cost them anything so what doesn't cost you anything brings no interest to you and really no interest to god worship requires the willingness to surrender the thing that is nearest to your heart and that's what the lord was testing abraham about look at luke chapter 14 verse 26 and 27 and this is what the lord meant when he said this to his disciples he was measuring their willingness to worship him it always comes as a cost luke 14 verse 26 and 27 if anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother wife and children brothers and sisters yes and his own life also he cannot be my disciple and whoever does not bear his cross and come after me cannot be my disciple you know david foster said david foster wallace says if you worship the wrong thing it will eat you alive it's a powerful statement if you worship the wrong thing it will eat you alive if we worship the wrong thing it will eat us alive it will it will be filled with us it'll ingest and digest us but if we worship the true god we will be filled with him remember the difference altogether what you want to be filled with also worship has to come at the risk of even giving away your life look at daniel chapter 3 verse 18 don't allow anything that wants to rob your worship to penetrate the sphere that belongs only to the lord when daniel when the hebrews were at the most fragile place in their worship notice how they responded to the king who demanded of them to bow and worship an image daniel 3 18 he talked about god is able to deliver us but he said but if not but if not let it be known to you o king that we do not serve your gods nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up and friends today something is going to try to erect itself in your life as an image of worship it could be television it could be media could be your ipad some people their phones are a lot closer than their bibles they grope in the dark for their bibles but they can grab their phones at an instance and that's why i always recommend put your bible closer to your bed than your phone so when you wake up in the morning and you reach for anything there it is get the living word before you get the news of the day the latest gossip and put that as the door post put that as the bar from all the other things to come in but uh in the interest of time i want to go to romans chapter 12 verse 1 to 2. worship can only occur within the parameters of transformation and not confirmation without a renewed mind and heart worship will always elude us i'm reading this in the niv i love the way it translates it here romans 12 1 and 2 paul says therefore i urge you brothers in view of god's mercy to offer your bodies a living sacrifice same thing isaac and abraham learn a living sacrifice holy and pleasing to god i love the way this is your spiritual act of worship and ivy this is your spiritual act of worship presenting your body your mind your heart to the lord every day this is your spiritual act of worship and then when you do that do not be conformed any longer to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind then you will be able to test and approve what is god's will his good pleasing and perfect will that's where worship begins amen thank you pastor john what an incredible lesson worship that's right this entire life is all about worship the conflict at the end is all about worship who will we serve and as parents and grandparents and teachers it's important to teach your children and grandchildren who they need to worship that's what my day is about and declare them to their children which is really training your children teaching your children instructing them to have a relationship with jesus teaching them about jesus teaching them his word his law that's what this day is about we're going to go to psalms but before we go there let's look at deuteronomy 8. deuteronomy sorry deuteronomy chapter 11 verse 18 that's where the eight came in deuteronomy 11 18 and then we'll go to the psalm which was what we had for our lesson today deuteronomy 11 18 therefore you shall lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul and bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes you shall teach them to your children speaking of them when you sit in the house when you walk by the way when you lie down and when you rise up and you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land of which the lord swore to your fathers to give them like the days of the heavens above the earth we are called now greg and i are not parents but parents especially are called or mothers or fathers in israel who can offer instruction to other young people or older women instructing the younger or older men instructing the younger or teachers we all have people that we have influence over teaching them all day every day every opportunity opening up the word of god to them so the lesson talks up about psalms and the importance of psalms in ancient israel psalms of course is just poetry that was set to music you could say sacred poems that were meant to be sung used often with the children of israel during times of worship pastor tom there's of course 150 psalms and they were written spanning close to a thousand years king david wrote most of them but we have several other authors in the book of psalms as well there's many different psalm types you could say there's individual and community prayers for help there's individual and community prayers of thanksgiving and praise there's hymns honoring god as our creator and as our king there's songs of trust in songs of zion there's royal psalms and pilgrimage songs and liturgies or rituals for public worship there's taurus psalms and the psalms covers an incredible theme incredible range of themes there's a worthiness of god as our creator and judge and savior and redeemer and sustainer and healer refuge and shepherd there's great cries for deliverance i know when i need that i open up and read something that david wrote these cries for deliverance or vindication there's sorrow for sin and confession of sin discussion of the law the coming messiah the righteous and the wicked the sabbath the heavenly and earthly sanctuary salvation and suffering the book of psalms covers it all but we're going to psalm chapter 78 psalm 78 and that's the psalm we're focusing on in today's lesson of course psalm 119 is the longest sum but 78 is the second longest psalm and it's written by asaph who's a contemporary of king david this is really a wisdom psalm that recounts god's mighty acts for his covenant people it starts from egypt and the exodus and it goes all the way down to the time of david we're only going to focus on the first eight verses which is the call to pass this knowledge this instruction on to future generations that's what the first eight verses focus on after that there's some accusations against ephraim or israel there's this cycle of the wilderness experience where they went away from god and then god's judgment and mercy that happens twice and then at the very end it ends with some promises but we're just looking at the first eight verses i call this the call to parents you know if you think about it in today's society there are many single parent homes and the role of the father is marginalized if you watch any sort of television you look at sitcoms or anything what do you see the father's role is marginalized or made fun of there's a quote i read once which is horrible but it says this fathers are a biological necessity but a psychological absurdity nothing is further from the truth the role of moms is vitally important yes but the role of fathers is just as important in teaching and educating and training children as goes the home so goes the society so the role of parents in the home is vitally important so let's look at this called appearance we're in verse one i divided the call to parents up kind of into three different sections the first section is the invitation to hear and understand this is verses one through three give ear o my people to my law incline your ears to the words of my mouth now that word give ear means to hear to listen with understanding to hearken so pay attention to my law pay attention to what i'm going to share pay attention to the words in the word of god now the word incline is really interesting in the hebrew it means to stretch out to bend or bow literally like a dog or a horse that kind of swivel their ears around when you're talking to them you know they could have their back to you and you call their name at the ear you can tell just the ear turns and you think they're listening to me even if they did not turn their head what's it mean we need to lean forward to catch everything that god wants to give us verse two i will open my mouth in a parable i will utter dark saiyans of old which we have heard and known and our fathers have told us now that word dark saints doesn't literally mean dark saiyans but it would be a riddle or a perplexing saying or question psalm 78 is a history of god's dealing with his people god's faithfulness his mercy his love his grace his judgment and by contrast we see israel's unfaithfulness israel's stubbornness and israel's rebellion it's important that we remember the past not that we repeat the mistakes of the past but that we remember the past there's a quote ellen white makes this is in life sketches page 196 i really like this quote we have nothing to fear for the future except as we shall forget the way the lord has led us and his teaching in our past history it's an important for parents to teach their children this is what god has done in our lives in the past this is the way we have seen him work and this is how we can have faith for how he's going to work in our lives in the future the second section is verses four and five the invitation to teach the children and grandchildren we will not hide them from their children telling to the generations to come the praises of the lord and his strength and his wonderful works that he has done for he established a testimony in jacob and appointed a law in israel which he commanded our fathers that they should make known to their children it is important to communicate truth especially god's word to our children and succeeding generations don't hide it don't forget to speak of it don't water it down simply speak the word of god into your children's lives and the third section is verses six through eight this is the goal of this instruction that the generation to come might know them why do we teach children why do we teach grandchildren why do we do that so that the generation to come might know them might know the lord the children who would be born that they might arise and declare them to their children that they may set their hope in god and not forget the works of god but keep his commandments don't make the mistakes of the past and may not be like their fathers a stubborn and rebellious generation a generation that did not set its heart a right whose spirit was not faithful to god future generations need to know the word of god future generations need to understand the mercy grace and kindness of god future generations need to teach this word continually to their children to remember god's goodness to them and to their parents to trust god and to learn to hearken to walk in obedience to god's commands what a call is upon parents especially mothers and fathers to teach the word of god to succeeding generations wow thank you jill amazing when you look back on your life and i look back on my life i can see the greatest impression of who i am today started when my parents taught me about the lord specifically the lady that raised me and that's the responsibility each one of us has as a parent but we're going to go to in spirit and truth right after the break it's going to be an exciting portion of the lesson don't go away we'll be right back ever wish you could watch a 3abn sabbah school panel again or share it on facebook instagram or twitter well you can by visiting three abn panel a clean design makes it easy to find the program you're looking for there are also links to the adult bible study guide so you can follow along sharing is easy just click share and choose your favorite social media share a link save a life for eternity welcome back to our topic worship and education and we're on tuesday now pastor ryan day in spirit and in truth i love that title hey you got that right brother in spirit and in truth lots to say little time to say it but we got to go so here's the thing we're going to be talking about the two legs on which true worship stands and that's spirit and in truth you leave one out that's not true worship so we have a lot of people who worship the lord and what they believe to be in spirit but they don't worship the lord in truth where you have those people who worship the lord and all the truth that they know and all the truth that they have but they're not worshiping him in spirit so where we find the foundation of this or where we find this reference in scripture is in the story of jesus conversation with the woman at the well and that is found in john chapter 4 verses 7 through 26 we may not read the entire story but i just want to reference here for those of you who may be watching for the first time and have never heard this story before basically the background of this is jesus and his disciples they're kind of on an evangelistic mission they're kind of going from city to city jesus is performing miracles jesus is introducing himself to the people in the area he's he's doing a wonderful preaching work and sharing the gospel and he ends up in samaria and so they end up in this particular city and this bible says the disciples go into town to get food okay they've been traveling and jesus stops and has a divine appointment with this woman at a well and of course he tells the woman you know hey i'm thirsty could you give me some water to drink and she's caught off guard by this because if you know the history between the jews and the samaritans the samaritan people were kind of looked at at a as a lower class of people from the jews they were kind of looked at the as a kind of a much lower class i'll just put it that way and so she's taken off by the fact that she's caught off guard by the fact that jesus being a jew is having this conversation with her so she says you know you were jews speaking to me you know jesus says look you know give me a drink of water and she says surely you know you know you you truly you can give your own self some water because you know i'm a samaritan and you're a jew and this really doesn't work out right right you know it's just you can just read into this and clearly see that this is an awkward encounter between her and jesus but then jesus begins to tell her about this living water he says look he says i have a water that i can give you that is a living water you will never thirst again it'll change and transform your life and of course she begins to inquire about this living water and uh she eventually learns that after jesus reveals himself to her and and begins to say things about her life he begins to predict things or not predict things but he begins to tell things about her life that perhaps no one else would know a complete stranger and she recognizes that this surely you are a prophet she says a prophet of israel but it's interesting that she quickly diverts the conversation to worship and this is the meat of our conversation and i really just went through if you want to read those this story a little bit more clearly go to john chapter 4 and read from verses 7 all the way through to about verse 18 and that'll kind of give you the background of what we're about to talk about but in verse 19 let's pick up there john chapter 4 verse 19 the bible says the woman said to him sir i perceive that you are a prophet our fathers worshiped on this mountain and you jews say that in jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship jesus said to her woman believe me the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain nor in jerusalem worship the father you worship what you do not know we know what we worship for salvation is of the jews now it kind of sounds like jesus is being a little kind of a little selfish a little proud proud here that's not the case he's this is a divine appointment he knows exactly what's happening and he's got a special special message he wants to share with her so notice what happens in verse 23 he says but the hour is coming and now is when the true worshipers will worship the father in spirit and truth for the father is seeking such to worship him and then here's the verse verse 24 god is spirit and those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth so let's first get this out of the way we have to understand the difference between worship and actions of worship of course there are actions of worship that are expressions of worship but then there's a there's a little bit more of a formal name for it that would be the liturgy many people go to church and they do things and they call it worship raising of the hands clapping singing songs those are the actions which are expressive of worship but worship is as pastor john brought up beautifully and i'm just going to kind of add this that worship is the attitude of the heart it's a state of being okay you you worship god in your actions and in your choices and in your very attitude towards god each and every day and so when we worship god we must worship him in spirit and in truth so what does that mean i'm going to start with the spirit aspect because this is the one that usually most people don't fully understand i'm going to read a quote here from the desire of ages page 189 notice what what she says here about this worshiping god in spirit says the religion that comes from god is the only religion that will lead to god in order to serve him a right we must be born of the divine spirit keep that in mind born of the divine spirit this will purify the heart and renew the mind giving us a new capacity for knowing and loving god it will give us a willing obedience to all his requirements okay notice this it goes on to say this is true worship in in spirit it is the fruit of the working of the holy spirit okay so i'm gonna reference this really quickly worshiping in spirit if you just go back a chapter we just read the the meeting between jesus and the woman at the well in john chapter four but if you go back a chapter to john chapter three jesus had already explained this spiritual transformation if you're gonna worship the lord in spirit okay don't miss this point you have to be renewed by the holy spirit amen you have to have a spiritual transformation from christ and it has to be an ongoing experience in which you are led by the spirit of god into an obedient relationship with him therefore it puts you in a constant state of worshiping him in spirit uh referencing john chapter 3 when jesus was talking to nicodemus okay nicodemus says look you're telling me to go back into my mother's womb and be born again jesus is like no man you're missing it you're missing it what's what's the flashes of the flesh but what is uh born of the spirit is spirit and then he gives an example he says you know takes in consideration the wind he goes you know you feel its effects you can hear it but you can't see where it's going so is the spirit in other words he's like it's a spiritual thing you need to be born of the spirit and at any time that can happen but here's what you got to do and i'm going to reference this this is john chapter 3 verse 14. jesus says as moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness even so must the son of man be lifted up amen so how can we have this constant ongoing worshipping in spirit in which we are being renewed by the spirit and the holy spirit blows through our heart and transforms our life you have to be constantly looking to the uplifted violin you have to put jesus in the forefront and constantly keep your eyes on him now i'm speaking spiritually here obviously we have lives but but spiritually speaking christ should always be at the center of our lives when we lift up the savior and we behold the uplifted savior all the time we will be renewed day by day the holy spirit as the bible teaches us in john chapter 14 and john chapter 16. it teaches us he teaches us all things he will bring all things to our memory he will reprove the world of sin he will guide you into all truth and he will always glorify christ by revealing his character to you again that's john 14 and john 16 in john 14 verse 26 and john 16 verses 8 and 13 and 14. i'm going pretty fast here but you can go to youtube and rewatch it and pause it let's let's move on so being transformed by the holy spirit being led by the holy spirit to live an obedient uh faith filled life in christ that's worshipping god in spirit but what about truth okay worshiping god and truth you see at the same time we must worship in truth we must have some correct knowledge of god but we also need to know that we need to know his requirements for us in other words this is where doctrine comes in many people want to want to worship the lord in spirit in other words i've been to churches and grew up you know in certain churches where it was all about the feelings and the emotions but there was no truth you have to pair the two jesus said in john 17 17 sanctify them by thy truth thy word is truth how are we sanctified by the word by the word of god jesus himself said that if you're going to be sanctified which by the way means to be set apart for a holy use god wants to set us apart for a holy use he wants us to worship him in spirit but also in truth that's why in 2 thessalonians chapter 2 paul talks about you know those who do not have the love of the truth this is second thessalonians 2 verses 10 through 12. talks about those in the last day they don't have the love for the truth and therefore he says for this reason god will send them strong delusion that they will continue to believe a lie that they may be condemned who did not believe the truth my friends you can think you're having a spiritual experience you can think that you're you're having this great amazing emotional spiritual experience but if you are rejecting the truth of god's word my friends that's where jesus says they worship me in vain that's right jesus talks about being worshipped that's why paul said in second timothy two verses two through four preach the word preach the word be instant in season and out of season reprove rebuke with all long suffering and doctrine they don't save us but they lead us to the savior for the time will come he says when they will not endure some doctrine and they shall turn away their ears from the truth and shall be turned into fables so my friends i want to end with this this is john chapter 8 verse 31 it says then jesus said to those jews which believed on him if you continue in my word then you are my disciples indeed and you shall know the truth and the truth shall not set you free but make you free be free in jesus worship him in spirit and in truth so far i think this is my favorite lesson that we've done but i have wednesday which is the beauty of holiness if you open your bibles to first chronicle 16 we're going to spend some time in first chronicles 16. i want to start off with verse 29 because this is the topic it says give to the lord the glory do his name bring an offering and come before him oh worship the lord in the beauty of holiness how do we worship the lord in the beauty of holiness we're concentrating on his purity his perfection his power his purpose his plan but there's more than that you know as we as we concentrate on the lord it draws our hearts to thanksgiving and praise but there's more you hit that is that we worship the lord in the beauty of holiness when we are living our lives according to his plan when we are set apart for his purposes obedience is the highest expression of worship when you think about that so let's look at first chronicles well let me just set this up first chronological chapter 16 has one of the most beautiful psalms in it and this is the at the dedication of the tabernacle in mount zion and what had happened is the philistines had stolen the ark then it was returned to israel and it rested at the house of abinadab aren't you glad you know your name is not abinadab but it was there for 20 years now he had two sons one son was eleazar the priest but also usa was his son so king david prepares his tabernacle in jerusalem and you know what i love about the tabernacle it is theology in uh physical form it all pointed to jesus it was all about the plan of jesus and worship we need worship and education we need to let the plan of salvation the love of jesus be the center but so what he has done is he's built this tabernacle and you know they would go there and they'd give burnt offerings which that was to indicate their total commitment to the lord they would give fellowship offerings that was to indicate the covenant relationship with the lord but they go oh david also made music an integral part you know he appointed the musicians and i'm telling you they had the trumpeting priest they had the string ensembles and the clanging symbols this was pretty good stuff but they go down to get the ark that is at abinadabs and they move it not according to god's instructions so uza is struck dead and they have to leave the ark at obed edom's house now the interesting thing is he's a philistine but he was loyal to david and israel but obedient he's got it for three months at his house and he's unusually blessed while the ark is there so now the second attempt they bring the ark to jerusalem and they transported at this time according to the prescribed old testament law but what i love if you look in first chronicles 15 i know that we can't base our worship on feeling but i don't i mean feelings alone but you can't really worship without feelings you've got to let have feelings in your heart that love for the lord david was so excited to think that the ark was going to come to rest in the permanent in a permanent place that his house would be blessed from here on out he's so excited that as they're proceeding he's dancing before the lord in the procession going there he's remembering and he writes this beautiful song that he's remembering and recounting and rejoicing in god's works for his covenant people so let's look at this first chronicles verses this is first chronicles 16 and verses 8 through 13 he's exhorting the people to recall and proclaim what god has done in the past you know what that's what praise is about we are praising god for what he's done and listen amen oh listen what he says oh give thanks to the lord call upon his name make known his deeds among the people sing to him sing psalms to him talk of his wondrous works glory in his holy name let the hearts of those who rejoice who seek the lord seek the lord and his strength sake his face forevermore remember his marvelous works which he has done his wonders and the judgments of his mouth oh seed of israel his servant you children of jacob his chosen ones i'm already worshiping when you're reading that just gives me chills now verses 14 through 22 david rehearses the abrahamic covenant that was uh renewed with isaac and jacob talking about the land that they're going to get that the messiah is going to come from these progenitors and talking about the everlasting justification justification by faith in verse 23 and 24 he adds an evangelistic thrust that all the world should learn about the god of israel listen verse 24. declare his glory among the nations his wonders among all people you know the whole purpose we looked in deuteronomy where moses said the rock your rock begot you you are begotten of god israel which that term means to be set apart for a unique covenant purpose the whole reason he chose these people is that the world would understand through their experience how wonderful god was and understand the plan of redemption now in verse we're still in first chronicles 16 verses 25 through 27 is he's the only true god worship him his creator verse 28 and 29 this is interesting worship him with offerings and let me tell you something praise is an offering to god we're supposed to god's works should motivate us to serve us and part of that is praise verse 28. give to the lord o families of the peoples give to the lord glory and strength it's saying ascribe these attributes to him let your mouth worship him for this give to the lord the glory do his name bring an offering come before him oh worship the lord in the beauty of holiness when is the last time you worship the lord in the beauty of holiness now he goes on i just i want to get here verses 30 through 33 he talks about the power of god as creator is recognized and that we're to testify of his glory but he ends with the need to rely on god for salvation let's look at first corinthians 16 34 oh give thanks to the lord for he is good for his mercy endures forever and say save us o god of our salvation gather us together deliver us from the gentiles to give thanks to your holy name to triumph in your praise blessed be the lord the god of israel from everlasting to everlasting he's talking about god's eternal unchanging nature and all the people said what amen so bottom line is what god has done deserves our praise and worship when you think of the sacrificial system and how god became a man and was our substitute on the cross this gives us hope for eternal life but we should worship him in the beauty of holiness and i just want to encourage you i make praise at least 50 of my prayer i always begin with praise and thanksgiving it's probably 50 to 70 of my prayer because then i am reminded of the beauty of the holiness of god and everything that comes after that the supplications even the intercession it's based on knowing the god who's going to answer amen amen could you mention that scripture you read last the last one because i think you said corinthians but you meant something else first chronicles okay did i say corinth isn't that funny how we do that first chronicles 16. thank you thank you very much well god's blessings continue as we go into the next day's lesson now i want to read some of the titles that we went through because the title of this lesson is worship in education then we heard we all worship something the next one and declare them to their children the next one in spirit and in truth and then you just heard the beauty of holiness this one is entitled idolatry and education why because we are facing a great controversy between good and evil yes and you see this even in education so when we look at the word idolatry and you look it up in the dictionary one from merriam-webster says the worship of a physical object as god also a moderate attachment or devotion to something and i will add or someone that's good because people worship people some people worship celebrities some people worship singers which are also celebrities some people worship presidents or kings but the only one worthy of worship is god and god alone that's right now the word in the greek is very similar to the way it sounds in spanish which means also when you look it up is image worship as well so we need to be extremely careful with this because we are facing a great controversy between good and evil i will read to you from revelation 13 15 15-17 to remind you that we are living in times when we are going to see this that's right he was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed this is coming he causes all both small and great rich and poor free and slave a mark on their right hand or in their foreheads on their foreheads and then no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast or the number of his name so this is idolatry and you may think today well people don't worship images as they used to but yes they do that's right i can tell you that every week some people bow before images you may know in some countries they do worship things from rocks to plants and different different things of this nature it's not a secret you can go to india i remember our son was in india preaching over there and as he was walking by he says oh look at this beautiful black don't touch it he was told that's a god here it was a plant and so people worship different things satan has worked hard to put something else in front of people so that people will worship something else instead of god but he is the one that wants worship notice what he said to jesus when he tempted him uh in person uh there in matthew chapter 4 i'm going to read verses 8 through 10. again the devil took him up on an exceedingly high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory verse 9 and he said to him all these things i will give you if you will fall down and worship me this is what the devil wants he wants worship that's right and if you won't worship him directly he wants you to worship something else or someone else but jesus said in verse 10 then jesus said to him away with you i like that oh wait with you away with you satan for it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him only you shall worship praise be to god this that's whom we shall worship the only one worthy of our worship and i encourage you to consider your life you may have something that you're worshiping in your house and what could that be pray god will reveal it to you if god is not the one that you're worshiping stop today and worship the only true god our creator now the lesson brings mark chapter 7 verses 1-13 because we have some principles here that we need to highlight because we're talking about idolatry in education how can idolatry get into education you may ask well this is more of something you may see you may see it in christian school but you'll see it most definitely in the secular educational system so let's look uh we don't have time to read the whole mark 7 1-13 i encourage you to do so but here's a scene where the pharisees and scribes came to uh attack jesus let's say it attacking jesus finding a way to uh cause him to to stumble to have something to accuse him so there in mark chapter seven i'll just reverses five uh maybe through nine and this is what the bible says then the pharisees and scribes asked him why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders but he bred with unwashed hands he answered and said to them well did isa isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites now this is strong language but this is what they were as it is written this people honors me with their lips but their heart is far from me you see if you're just worshiping god from your lips but your heart is far from god then you're not really worshiping god that's right like it was already said we must worship god in spirit and in truth and to do this you must do so with all of your heart notice and in vain they worship me teaching as doctrines the commandments of men notice what they do for laying aside the commandment of god you hold the tradition of men to watch the washing of pictures and cuffs and many other such things you do he said to them all too well you reject the commandment of god that you may keep your tradition be careful with tradition that's right if what you do is not found in the word of god it is a tradition and should not be put above god's word that's right now what happens with when when you do this verse 13 is the the the highlight of this it says making the word of god of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down and many such things you do so uh when you put something else above god then you are putting aside god and the word of god and you are worshiping that that becomes an idol that's right now i want to say something to you because there's a great great danger in the school systems and that is that children are presented ideas that are contradictory to scriptures and i'm going to mention one of them that is easy to see evolution now evolution is an idea that is not founded on the word of god it puts god aside and say we came from nothing basically from nothing but god created us we are created in his image praise be to god now i want to mention something to you about the illusion of truth effect wow i don't have time enough time to do this but the illusion of truth effect the validity effect truth effect or reiteration effect is something that has been proven by studies by universities what it is the repetition of an idea even if it's a false idea that you know it's false but you keep hearing it over and over again your mind it becomes familiar in your mind and you then look at that as a truth so consider these children that come into the kindergarten first grade and all the way through college they tell you evolution evolution evolution this can have a devastating effect on people they begin to question and they begin to accept these things as truth in a 2015 study researchers discovered that familiarity can overpower rationality and that repetitively hearing that a certain fact is wrong can affect the hearer's beliefs researchers attributed the illusory illusory illusory truth effects impact on participants who knew the correct answers to begin with but were persuaded to believe otherwise through the repetition of a falsehood to a processing fluency very dangerous and i encourage you to consider you know your children are going to public school some people can't afford to pay but you must hold these family worships and keep continuing to present to them the truth the truth of god's word to counteract the things that may lead them away from the lord so and i encourage you to consider psalm 16 11 that will show me the path of life in thy presence is fullness of joy at thy right hand there are pleasures forevermore let's worship the only true god he alone is worthy of our worship amen what a powerful lesson i mean this has been a beautiful lesson we will laying foundation we can't say for the last six lessons but surely this was one of our favorite ones uh education is coming up next education and redemption is going to be the next one we're talking about if you notice the entire quarters about education so jill why don't you summarize what you covered today i had declared them to their children revelation 14 verse 12. here's the patience of the saints here are those who keep the commandments of god and the faith of jesus so the goal of education the goal of parenting is to teach children young people to know understand god's law and to love jesus amen jesus says in john chapter 16 that the holy spirit is the spirit of truth and so if you worship the lord in spirit and in truth you're kind of getting an all-encompassing deal so to worship god in spirit and truth means to submit yourself to the holy spirit that he may constantly lead you into truth and to worship and serve god always amen amen mine was the beauty of holiness and i would just say this that central to all worship and all worship education is the plan of salvation teach your children how much god loves them and what he's done for them amen amen i want to highlight a song very well known god and god alone god and god alone created all these things we call our own from the mighty to the small the glory in them all is god's and god's alone god and god alone is fit to take the universe's throne let everything everything that lives reserve is truest praise for god and god alone amen that's right amen and my thought is before the spirit of worship is expressed in your actions the truth of god's word must be embraced in your heart i like that education and redemption is going to be the next quarter we were blessed by this study happened but the next lesson lesson number eight and we're encouraging you to join us then but remember what we said today if you're not worshiping the lord your worship is in vain find out where that roadblock is and remove it and put the lord on the altar of your heart join us next time for an exciting study god bless you until we see you again [Music] you
