introduce you to our wonderful panel here pastor john denzel we're so glad to have you with us it's a great blessing and an honor to be here to learn from jesus and from his disciples amen and amen when we always learn so much from each other and then my dear sister joe moriconi privilege to be here shelley thank you so much excited to open up god's word me too and then my pastor pastor john lo mccain that's right education and redemption has a message for all of us oh boy so i'm excited about that too me too and then what can i say for pastor brian day hmm you don't have to say much because the word of god is going to say it all amen and amen i love that and i just have to apologize to you at home if i squeak i notice sometimes when i go up i got a little vocal fold damage but let's jump right into our lesson we know that our lord god is a covenant-making covenant keeping god of love and he reveals himself to us i mean his whole purpose in creating us was that we could be in a love relationship with him and he wants to communicate with us so let's look at some of the ways that god reveals himself to us he reveals himself to us through creation we look around we see his intelligent design his creativity and his power he reveals himself through the conscience of humanity because god by his holy spirit he's always wooing us showing us the right way he revealed himself to us in the person of jesus christ who walked this earth to show us exactly who the father was and he reveals himself to us in scripture but before we open up the scriptures we need to have a prayer john i'm going to ask you to pray please gracious father in heaven education is what we all receive when we open our hearts to your holy spirit send that power today father to be the active agent in what is said and what is done and may all the glory go to you we pray in jesus name amen amen and amen so we opened this lesson with the memory text from ii timothy 3 16. all scripture is given by inspiration of god and what is it profitable for for doctrine reproof correction and instruction in righteousness when it's talking about all scripture here at the time this was written it's referring to the old testament you know i grew up as a new testament christian and i was taught that the old testament forget about it i'm going to tell you something the all the new testament is contained in the old and the old is explained in the new if you don't study from genesis to revelation you can't understand what god is trying to tell his people he is god says i am the lord i'd change not he's the same yesterday today and forever so when we look at what this is good for for doctrine what is doctrine teaching and and you know i this is the instructions for how to have an abundant life in god sometimes people will say oh don't talk to me about doctrine i don't want to hear that word doctrine and i think are you kidding doctrine is god's truth encapsulated i love it it is good for reproof that is when we are shown the error of our way and then god brings us to repentance confession and repentance it is used for correction hey that word correction this is the only time it's used in the old testament i mean in the new testament and it means to restore someone it's like if someone has fallen from their feet it's to help them back up from the ground and to restore them and instruction in righteousness you know people ask me sometimes do you believe in righteousness by faith i believe that's the only kind of righteousness there is but we know that john tells us in first john that the righteous will practice righteousness so we are learning how to follow in the footsteps of jesus so god reveals himself to mankind in a father-child relationship a student a teacher student relationship and he invites us come i want you to come to me i want you to learn of me i want you to know who i am and how much i love you and i want you to know your identity as my child how precious did you know god just think about it he walked in the garden of eden teaching he walked on the face of the earth and the person of jesus christ teaching he's going to be teaching us throughout all eternity we're just going to be marveling at the things that we learn so let's look at sunday we're going to open our bibles to genesis 1 verse 26 is where we will begin and there's something interesting genesis 1 verse 26 sunday's title is in the image of god well what does that mean genesis 1 26 says then god elohim which is a plural name l was the name for god elohim is the plural of l listen to how god expresses himself in plural pronouns he said let us make man in our image according to our likeness let them have dominion over the fish of the sea over the birds of the air over the cattle over all the earth over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth so who is this it's not the angels that's right because he's getting ready to say right here in verse 27 so god created man in his own image that's the s in the image of god he created them male and female he created them and he blessed them and he said to them be fruitful and multiply fill the earth and subdue it have dominion over the fish of the sea over the birds of the air and over everything that moves on the face of the earth now i know that there's a lot of conversations on what does it mean to be created in the image of god right we know that jesus said in john 4 24 that god is spirit so does he have a form like us i mean is he shaped like a man i don't know the bible doesn't tell me but what i do know is that image and likeness that god created us with moral sensibilities with he created us perfect he created us to be like him with intellectual abilities we have a will we have emotions he created us with the capacity to govern his creation his earth so it's interesting to me that there is a law of reproduction in god's creation he created male and female and they had to be able that said by divine design they had to come together to reproduce to fulfill what he said to multiply so god has a purpose but here's what i want to share with you because this is a thought god gave me some time ago that i just love the bible tells us in first john 4 8 and 4 16 god is love that is the very essence of god's character and all of his attributes everything about him has to i mean that's the essence of this being all of his character has to line up with that love and it's it is an other centered love in other words it's an outpouring of self-sacrificing love you know if we were created in god's image he is a relational being of love he created us to be beings of love and and think about how wonderful that is that he created us to have a relationship with him he created us to love others and serve others and to me if we're going to live in right relationship we need to open up our hearts the bible says in romans 5 5 god pours his love into our heart by the power of the holy spirit the only way that we can love the lord our god with all of our heart soul mind and strength and love our neighbor as ourself which are the most important commandments is to open up our heart and let god pour his holy spirit his love his essence into us now let's look at genesis 5 because we're going to see that there is after the fall of mankind the image of god is marred in man in genesis 5 verse 1 let's see god created man he made them in the likeness of god he created male and female and blessed them now jump down to verse 3. adam lived 130 years and he begot a son in his own likeness after his image and he named this son seth now i believe that the second generation obviously a procreation that the image of god was passed on to man but what happened the image was marred because of the fall that fallen nature got passed on to us and that's why we needed a new adam the last adam when god became a man so that we could be born again in his image i love what the bible tells us romans 8 28 and 29 and we can never separate those two scriptures romans 8 28-29 says that all things work together for good for those who love the lord and are called according to his purpose that's your purpose but your destiny is right there in the next scripture because those that god foreknew he predestined to be conformed to the image of his son jesus christ that's your destiny let me read to you very quickly first thessalonians and i want to get to verse 3 or chapter 3 of first thessalonians because you know some people are going to say what do you mean god created us in the image of love if he created us in his image and he is love then brethren this is where it's all at let's look at first caress first thessalonians chapter 3 and verse 12 and it says may the lord make you increase and abound who's doing the work the lord the lord is doing the work increase and abound in what in love to one another and to all just as we do to you so that and anytime you see so or that or so that that's a purpose statement so paul saying hey may god cause you to increase and abound in love for this purpose here it is so that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our god and father the coming of our lord jesus christ with all of the saints do you realize what he's saying there he is saying that as we grow in love we grow in holiness that is a beautiful thing because we grow in the image of god amen amen amen praise the lord well i knew i know you can consume the rest of the time i could praise the lord well monday's lesson brings us to jesus as teacher and so now we want to encourage you to follow along because jesus there are many names by which he is addressed in the bible including one of my favorites is the lamb of god it takes away the sin of the world but he's also called master rabbi and these words actually mean teacher and see when you look at jesus as your teacher you're going to do well let's go into the book isaiah chapter 11. in isaiah chapter 11 the study is for versus one through nine but we're going to focus on verses one two and three there shall come forth a rod from the stem of jesse and a branch shall grow out of his roots this is another name for jesus the branch the spirit of the lord shall rest upon him the spirit of wisdom and understanding the spirit of counsel and might the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the lord his delight is in the fear of the lord and he shall not judge by the sight of his eyes nor decide by the hearing of his ears these are words that speak of a teacher and he has the spirit of wisdom and understanding and when we talk of when we consider jesus as a teacher then we can pause and consider that that the words he spoke we need to listen to amen now there was a time when jesus was teaching the people and he was saying some things that the bible says that somebody said these are things that are hard to hear and so one some people started leaving some people started leaving and so jesus apparently was getting sadder and sadder because i see him getting sad and shattered because he looks to his 12 disciples and he says will you also leave and peter said the right thing he says lord where can we go you have the words of life and so i want to tell you that jesus has the words of life today that's right now when you go to matthew mark luke and john and even into the book of revelation you can see that these are the words of jesus and if they were spirit if they were life then they are alive today amen and they are worthy of our study so when you go through matthew mark luke and john and don't just pass by the things that jesus said focus on them and ask the lord lord what what is it that you have for me in these scriptures be my teacher and when you come to the lord jesus christ you know he was the greatest teacher that has ever walked up on this earth and today there are people that have been considered great teachers highly intelligent some people think of einstein but when you think of all these great teachers and compare them to jesus they all need to humble themselves before the lord come and learn at the feet of jesus i remember seeing a commercial many years ago and i don't know what it was about they were just kind of panning along and they were showing people at a restaurant talking and talking eating eating and all of a sudden everybody grew silent and then the announcer said when e f hutton speaks people listen and i say wow what a powerful message that's right but this is what we need to consider about jesus so when we take time to pause and ask jesus lord teach me then you can really begin to learn and jesus did invite us to learn from him let's go to uh matthew chapter 11 verses 28 through chapter 11 verses 28-30 come to me jesus says all who labor and are heavy-laden and i will give you rest wow and these words is enough to study for a lifetime take my yoke upon you and learn from me for i am gentle and lowly in heart and you will find rest for your souls for my yoke is easy and my burden is light dear dear children of god jesus wants you to learn of him and his invitation is come unto me and learn of me and his invitation is to all and i praise the lord for that and so i want to read this to you from councils on education very powerful very powerful listen to this it is right that you should feel that you must climb to the highest round of the educational ladder philosophy and history are important studies but your sacrifice of time and money will avail nothing if you do not use your attainments for the honor of god and for the good of humanity unless the knowledge of science is a stepping stone to the attainment of the highest purposes it is worthless the education that does not furnish knowledge as enduring as eternity is of no purpose the education ah i read that part unless you keep heaven and the future in mortal life before you your attainments are of no permanent value but if jesus is your teacher not simply on one day of the week but every day every hour you may have his smile upon you in the pursuit of literary acquirements so don't let t jesus be your teacher one day a week you know unfortunately there are a lot of people that open their bible for the first time in the week when they get to church when somebody says turn your bibles to and that's when they're opening their bible for the first time a sad and horrible mistake because jesus wants to teach us even every hour and i encourage you to take time to learn of jesus and those that are listening that are teachers need to take time to learn at the feet of jesus as well because through him we can become we can reach our highest purpose in this life through jesus christ there is another quote that i want to read to you because it is also very powerful it talks about how jesus uh spoke in the book gospel workers page 260 i read to you from the book education before when jesus spoke it was not with hesitating uncertainty his words came within earnestness and assurance appropriate to their importance and the momentous consequences involved in their reception or rejection so this is the teacher whom we need to learn from and when you talk about learning from jesus what did jesus do he spent a lot of time in prayer that's right you read in the bible that it says he rose a great while before before uh before day in other words he got up and everybody was still snoring away and it was still dark he went a place apart to pray and have communion with the father and uh we we understand this as uh you know we consider ourselves students of the lord but also the lord uses us as teachers and we learn at the feet of jesus as well and he who tries to teach others about jesus before learning at the feet of jesus is making a great serious mistake we need to humble ourselves before the lord because it is only by humbling ourselves before the lord that we really open our minds and our understanding so that he can feed us and teach us and he has so much to teach us and yeah oh there's there's uh let's go let's go to it let's go to john chapter 3 and we're going to read that moment when a a teacher of israel came to jesus uh beginning in verse one john chapter one uh i'm sorry john chapter three beginning in verse one there was a man of the pharisees named nicodemus a ruler of the jews this man came to jesus by night and said to him rabbi we know that you are a teacher come from god for no one can do these things that you do unless god is with him he says some very wise words jesus answered and said to him he ignored everything practically he said and he said most assuredly i say to you unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of god jesus looked into the deepest need of nicodemus and spoke to his heart and spoke to his greatest need awakened his desire to learn more and then as you continue reading you will see that he began to ask questions don't be afraid to ask the lord questions that's right because the lord has answers amen and that's why he says come unto me and learn of me and so uh the lord wants to teach us even today first corinthians chapter 12 verse 28 i got to read this quickly and god has said some in the church first apostles secondary prophets thirdly teachers after that miracles then gifts of healings helps governments diversities of tongues and it continues but the lord has blessed with the gift of teaching as well and you may have that use it to god's honor and glory amen thank you pastor denzi now we have to take a quick break but we're going to be right back so join us ever wish you could watch a 3abn sabbah school panel again or share it on facebook instagram or twitter shelley and pastor johnny i love that we are made in the image of god and then jesus as our teacher rabbi on i have tuesday's lesson we look at moses and the prophets looking at the teaching material that is contained in the word of god the educational thoughts the instruction that we can find in the bible noah webster is called the father of american scholarship and education his blue-backed speller taught five generations of americans to read he said this education is useless without the bible the bible was america's basic textbook in all fields if you fast forward quite a few years time magazine had a cover in 2007 that was called this the case for teaching the bible and the article the author in the article argued for teaching the bible in public schools which is amazing thinking of the political climate today we look at teaching material found throughout the word of god hopefully we're going to make it all the way through the bible we're going to look at the different sections or genres of the bible how it's divided up into sections and then we're going to take a different book of the bible in each one of those sections and see the educational material that we can find in the word of god i just want to quote the memory text that shelley did a beautiful job with at the beginning we're going to go back a couple verses second timothy chapter 3. open your bibles to 2 timothy chapter 3 we're going to look at verses 14 through 17. paul of course speaking to his son in the faith timothy but you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of knowing from whom you have learned them and that from childhood you have known the holy scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in christ jesus the scriptures the bible gives us everything we need for salvation that wisdom and knowledge of jesus and salvation then the scripture shelley read all scripture is given by inspiration of god all scripture is god breathed amen i love that word all it's poss in greek it means each and every what i love about that is it doesn't mean just a certain scripture i like or the the passage i particularly feel an affinity to it means each and every scripture is god-breathed the ones i like or maybe dislike the ones i agree with or maybe not the ones that make me feel good and the ones that may be cut like a sharp two-edged sword all scripture is god-breathed that's right it's given by inspiration of god it's profitable for doctrine we prove correction shall he already covered that instruction and righteousness that the man of god may be complete or perfect thoroughly furnished for every good work scripture gives us a knowledge of salvation it instructs us in righteousness it teaches us it corrects and straightens out those areas in my life that are maybe out of balance so let's look at the teaching and instruction found in the word of god the first section of the bible is of course the five books of the law this is genesis through deuteronomy five books of the law known as the pentateuch the torah the law torah means teaching or instruction instead of thinking of it as just do's and don'ts rules and regulations the torah is filled with teaching material with how we are to live in covenant relationship with god there's also some history and biblical narrative found there as well let's look at the book of genesis of course we know moses was the author of those books in genesis we see origins the beginning of the world and humanity the beginning of light and darkness animals plants the beginning of the sabbath the beginning unfortunately of sin and the beginning of salvation or that plan of salvation that was unfolded to adam and eve we have our foundational understanding of basic theology the framework for our theology is laid in those first few chapters of the book of genesis we see god as creator god is savior we see humans coming from the dust and returning back to dust we see marriage and family and community we see salvation we see this great controversy plan between good and evil we see wonderful promises and covenantal relationship in the book of genesis that first messianic promise and then the noahic covenant in genesis 8 the abrahamic covenant in genesis chapter 15. the next section of the bible is the 12 books of history biblical narrative this is joshua through nehemiah and this really shows us how well god's people mastered the educational material they were taught and how they lived by it and we see sometimes they really followed god and mastered that educational material sometimes they didn't follow him so well and they had to be rebuked and chastened some judgment came and they went back to him the book i'm going to pick in that section is nehemiah we see the return of the exiles of course the first return under zerubbabel with fifty thousand people the second return under ezra maybe six thousand the third return under nehemiah in the book of nehemiah we see reconstruction of course ezra we know focused on reconstruction of the temple nehemiah focused on reconstruction of the wall in nehemiah we see reform reform and commitment to the law of god into their covenant relationship with god we see the covenant and god is the keeper of the covenant and covenant renewal take place in the book of nehemiah and we see reading from the word of god the next section is the five books of poetry or the five wisdom books this is job psalms proverbs ecclesiastes song of solomon the book of psalms there are at least three educational psalms that they call educational psalms in the book of psalms now clearly the entire book would be educational but there's at least three psalm 1 psalm 37 and psalm 73 psalm 1 is a meditation it's a study on god's law it contrasts the ways of the righteous and the ways of the wicked the righteous are like a tree and the wicked are like the chaff which is blown away the way of the righteous is known by god the way of the wicked shall perish the next section is the 17 books of prophecy this is the major and the minor prophets this the the educational material here is what the people ought to have learned from the educational material and we see this judgment of god of course the major prophets isaiah to daniel and then the 12 minor prophets if you look at the book of isaiah it's probably one of my favorite books his name of course means the lord saves and that fits the theme of the book isaiah's kind of divided into two books the first section would be the book of judgment the second section being the book of comfort and restoration the first book shows the first half of the book shows the results of following after idols and after their own gods the second half shows god's mercy and forgiveness and restoration if they came back to him we see prophecies in the book of isaiah we see promises in the book of isaiah we see god's holiness in the book of isaiah god's sovereignty his trustworthiness his love and commitment to his people we jump over to the new testament the first four books of course are the gospel matthew mark luke and john the gospel is abound in educational material because there's the parables of jesus there's the teachings of jesus in the book of matthew we have what they call five discourses which are these teachings of jesus the sermon on the mount of course matthew five through seven contains those central tenets of christian discipleship then there's a missionary discourse in matthew 10 jesus to the 12 apostles just before they're sent out there's the parabolic discourse in matthew 13 with the parables the church discourse in matthew 18 and the olivet discourse that end time events then we have one book of history biblical narrative which is acts and of course the theme of that is the early christian church showcasing the spread of christianity to the then known world we have 21 epistles books of letters to churches and individuals 14 of them written by paul and then seven written by james peter john and jude if you look at each one of them they begin with a gospel proclamation but they end with educational material practical material lessons for our lives today as christians and then the final book the final section would be the book of prophecy that's the last book of the bible the book of revelation we see in there jesus christ the son of man lion of the tribe of judah the lamb the word of god we see the heavenly sanctuary and the throne room we see the cross lifted up and the gospel portrayed we see the death resurrection ascension of jesus the church the end of the world and end time events so as we look at the bible as a textbook the entire bible from genesis to revelation shows us the character of god amen amen amen praise the lord that was praise the lord i took 10 of my seconds to say that praise the lord that was wonderful wednesday wise men and women as you were reading jill you went to second timothy 3 verse 14 and 15 to talk about the holy scriptures i want to use that very same passage to talk about wisdom but you must continue in the thing second timothy 3 verse 14 and 15. but you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of knowing from whom you have learned them and that from childhood you have known the holy scriptures which are able to make you wise wise men and women the word of their wives comes from the greek word sofidzo which means the act of becoming wise not that you were wise prior to that but is saying the more you read the wiser you become right and when the bible talks about wisdom wisdom in this sense as uh paul is writing to timothy this is an ever increasing wisdom which the bible the entrance of god's word brings light and so if you're in a dark tunnel as long as you have light you can see where you're going if you don't read the bible you can be religious but your tunnel is going to be dark and you have no idea where you're headed so desire wisdom above religion and wisdom will bring with it not just religion but a knowledge of god that cannot be attained any other way also in the book of second samuel 14 verse 2 we find the bible also talks about wise women now oftentimes we think of wisdom in the scriptures as well we we know about solomon but we often don't think about women but after hearing what you just did jill that's wisdom praise the lord and so it's good to have people who allow the word of god to give them wisdom such as as continually is displayed when we study god's word second samuel 14 2 says and joab sent to toccoa and brought from there a wise woman and said to her please pretend to be a mourner and put on morning apparel evidently she knew exactly how to mourn because he said do it the way you know best she was wise and do not anoint yourself with oil but act like a woman who has been mourning a long time for the dead in other words they're wise meaning it means they're cunning she's able to display she was able to get into that mode immediately and actress today are some wise people i remember reading the story years ago about tom hanks when he he played so many roles that people thought they knew him but what they simply did is they knew him in their role and as he said life was like a ball like a bowl of chocolate and so they knew him in all the roles he played but he became that character by following the director and the producer and in the reality of the comparison we can only become the character that god intends for us to become when we follow the director and the producer director god the producer jesus and the power of that ability to transform is the holy spirit we need those active agents the bible also says in proverbs 16 23 the heart of the wise teaches his mouth and adds learning to his lips i've discovered through the years now i'm up to my sixth or seventh bible now and i'm having a challenge going from my bible that's so well marked to my remnant bible my wife keeps saying use your new remnant study bible but i said honey this bible is like my right hand you know what i'm talking about after you get to use it in the pages you know how many pages to pick up to get to a book it's like all of a sudden you buy a brand new sword and although it's pretty it's going to take a while to learn how to use it right but the bible is a book of wisdom that continues to guide us and solomon is referred to in 1st kings 4 verse 29 to 34. it says in verse 34 and men of all nations from all the kings of the east who had heard of his wisdom came to hear the wisdom of solomon where did solomon get his wisdom from and the lord said to him what would you desire now people that have that question to pose to the lord what will you desire the lord said solomon could have said i want wealth i want to be powerful i want to be the greatest military general but he said i want wisdom i want to be able to discern i want to know how to make right decisions and the lord said that was a wise choice but since you didn't ask for the other things i'm going to give you all those things also and i'll tell you outside of uzziah uzziah was the second wisest man in the bible the uzziah was the second wealthiest man in the bible sorry only second to solomon great possessions a man who reigned for 52 years but his life didn't end in the way that was an honor to the lord but what i want to bring out right now are the different types of wisdom let's go to romans 7 verse 18 the first type of wisdom is practical wisdom practical wisdom wisdom is defined as the quality or state of being wise knowledge of what is true or right coupled with just a judgment as to the action or the intelligence that should follow the information you have discernment or insight scholarly knowledge or learning the wisdom of the schools wise sayings or teachings precepts or a wise act or sing those all define what wisdom is but practical wisdom practical wisdom demands more than the skill to be perceptive about others it also demands the capacity to perceive oneself this is practical to assess what our own motives are to admit our failures to figure out what has worked and what has not worked and why that's practical wisdom why did that not work you got to assess yourself you have to be willing to look at yourself in romans 7 verse 18 is a verse of practical wisdom for i know that in me that is in my flesh nothing good dwells for to will is present with me but how to perform what is good i do not find paul is criticizing himself this is why i'm failing so i'm not going to keep looking to myself because this is why i'm failing that's a practical wisdom passage but the transition from practical to theoretical happens when we participate in a comparison of a vacillating character to a non-negotiable regulation now watch you gotta follow vacillating character i keep changing but now all of a sudden we go to theoretical wisdom because we compare it to a non-negotiable non-negotiable regulation which is here now this is where paul transitions for we know that the law is spiritual a non-negotiable regulation romans 7 14 but i am carnals sold unto sin that happened as of an assessment of self a practical wisdom now we go to theoretical wisdom what is theoretical wisdom the application of knowledge based on what is really right and what is really wrong a constant a theater theoretical wisdom psalm 111 verse 10 says the fear of the lord is the beginning of wisdom a good understanding have all those who do his commandments his praise endures forever that is the non-negotiable regulation the theoretical aspect that says to us i'm gonna go i'm gonna compare my life to the commandments of god that never changes but i need help because i vacillate the non-negotiable regulation uses theoretical wisdom to say that your practical wisdom is not enough then we go down to cumulative wisdom cumulative wisdom decision making skill based on the knowledge gained by experience learning from past experience job 12 12 talks about cumulative wisdom wisdom is with aged men and with length of days understanding so in other words he's saying you'll be around long enough you know what to do and what not to do can i get an amen amen as i said to one young person who was talking about how smart they were smarter than their mom i said how old is your sister they said younger i said now which one is smarter you or her they said i got it the cumulative knowledge young people that your parents have can help you out if you recognize that they've been around that's cumulative then there's conventional wisdom a body of ideas or explanations generally accepted as true by the public or by experts in the field it is wisdom that refers to all the commonplace ideas and expert opinions that have commonly been accepted as true conventional in other words they've been through this how to make an engine ask somebody who's been doing it for 50 years conventional wisdom don't try to reinvent the engine when somebody who's been doing it already has done it conventional text proverbs 11 14 where there is no counsel the people fail but in the multitude of counselors there is safety that's conventional wisdom then the last one unconventional wisdom thinking outside the box when new ideas are introduced they usually come are compared with conventional wisdom on the subject before they are considered to be true in other words when people think outside the box they say that's great but let's compare that with people that know what they've been doing here is here's the unconventional text now this is amazing great men are not always wise nor do the aged always understand justice so don't think that because you've been around all this time that you have all the knowledge still use the theoretical non-negotiable regulation which is the word of god praise the lord man that was that was deep that's a lot of a lot of good a lot of good gems to be able to hold on to you were talking about wisdom pastor and thursday's lesson which is talking about education in the early church goes back into that wisdom how we receive that wisdom and by whom we receive that wisdom you know i could i could just imagine what it would have been like to be taught by jesus i think we've made it very clear brother denzel made it very clear jesus is the ultimate teacher and if you look at the new testament very clearly you know that obviously the disciples had this incredibly blessed period of time three and a half years where they literally walked and talked with jesus every single day he was their teacher he gave he gave them so much wisdom and i can only imagine all the questions they were able to ask him and it kind of you know makes me just can't wait to go to heaven because i have so many questions that i want to ask jesus and we're going to have that blessing too right to be able to be with jesus you know pastors over here laughing because he knows he knows i love me to ask me some questions in fact i know for a fact if there's anyone that's going to annoy if there's if it's possible to annoy god i'll be the one to do it with all my questions because i have lots of questions because i like truth i love truth and i like answers so yeah pastor's going to show up one ask some questions i'm going to say you got to come back in a million years i got to get my questions answered but but nonetheless jesus again with the disciples for three and a half years and they're just probably like drinking from a lake or a fire hose or whatever you want to call it just amazing wisdom but did that would that teaching aspect from god to his people stop when jesus left and that's the point that thursday's lesson is bringing out in education in the early church because jesus goes to heaven right he goes into that holy place where he is ministering on our behalf where he becomes our great intercessor our great high priest in heaven and now the the the education needs to continue right it's kind of like a you know from transition from high school to college right you know you have those three and a half to four years in high school but you know for many of us education doesn't stop we continue on well god gives the blessing of the holy spirit in fact we're going to read about that right now the blessing of the promise that god gives to the disciples is that when i'm gone i'm going to send you another comforter another helper we can read about that right now in john chapter 14 verses 15 through 18 and we're also going to add verse 26 as well with this the passage we've read many times in fact most people read verse 15 because they've remembered john 14 15 if you love me keep my commandments and then they stop right there but ultimately everything behind that is a response to what jesus just said in verse 14. in fact many people read that and go man it's impossible to keep the commandments right and but jesus just said if you love me you'll keep them but the response to that is look you're not going to do it comfortless you can keep the commandments and how do we keep it well verse 16 brings it about he says and i will pray the father and he will give you another helper the original greek there it just simply means it just simply means another advocate another helper the paracletos as it is in the greek another helper god is going to send us the holy spirit to continue that spiritual wise education that we need he continues on that he may abide with you for just a few years no the bible says forever that's right the spirit of and i love this truth don't forget that he is the spirit of truth it says whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees him nor knows them but you know him for he dwells with you and will be with you i will not leave you orphans i will come to you but the helper the holy spirit there it is again whom the father will send in my name will i love this he will teach you how many things all things all right okay this is this is verse 26 and we just went from verse 18 to 26. in verse 26 of john 14 he makes it clear that the holy spirit is in the business of teaching us all things that's right he wants to give us all of those beautiful things and teachings from god he will teach you all things and bring notices oh bring to your remembrance all things that i have said to you that's an awesome beautiful promise in fact we're going to transition now over to first corinthians chapter 2 for the remaining time that we have paul actually he amplifies this of what christ has given christ gives the promise he says when you leave when i leave you're going to go to jerusalem you're going to wait and terry because i'm going to send you the comfort of the holy spirit and we know that the holy spirit was poured out in a marvelous amazing way on the day of pentecost but notice the beautiful the beautiful exposition that we have here from paul paul is going to tell us not only whom we're going to get this wisdom from but he's going to expound in how it's going to come about and the significance and importance of that so we're in again first corinthians chapter 2 and we're going to read verses uh well let's just start with verse one and we're going to continue through we'll see how far we go so first corinthians chapter two beginning with verse one i love how paul starts this out again he's speaking to the corinthian church and he says and brethren when i came to you i did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of god for i determined not to know anything among you except jesus christ and him crucified i was with you in weakness in fear and in much trembling and my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom but in demonstration i love this next part of the spirit and of power that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but of the power of god now he's going to confirm what that power of god in just a moment is you can imagine it's the holy spirit but i love how he starts this out he's like look guys i didn't come to you at first with all of these clever words and you know all of this special language you know giving you all of these deep themes and deep elements that's way beyond your understanding i came to you with the just the simplistic power of the gospel jesus christ and him crucified and that's why it always baffles me the people want to go out with witnessing hey praise the lord for witnessing we need to witness we need to share the gospel of jesus but we need to meet people on their level and paul understood that he understood that coming to the corinthian church that these people most of them had never even heard of jesus they don't even know the gospel they don't know that they have a savior and so he's saying look i came to you like this at first so i could give you the simplistic elements of the gospel jesus christ and him crucified that's the foundation that's the core but does he stop there he doesn't stop there notice what he continues on this is verse six he says however in fact this is i love that however because he is in response to what he just said however we speak wisdom among those who are mature mature yet not the wisdom of this age nor the rulers of this age who are coming to nothing but we speak the wisdom of god in a mystery the hidden wisdom now we're getting deep some deep language here which god ordained before the ages of our glory which none of the rulers of this age knew for had they known they would not have crucified the lord god you know what he's saying said these people rejected the simplistic the simplicity of the gospel they wouldn't have probably crucified jesus had they had known the deep wisdom and the wonderful hidden wisdoms of god but he's going to tell us how this is going to come about okay he's going to tell us here in verse 10. notice how this deep wisdom has come now that you've matured in the lord he's saying now that now that you've grown now that you've become more mature in the gospel of jesus god doesn't want to stop the education that's right you continue to learn you continue to grow and that's why it always amazes me i run into people all the time and they have the spirit pastor no you've you've met people like this and it breaks my heart to see people reach a point in their relationship with the lord where they feel like i've got it all i've got enough knowledge i've got enough wisdom there's nothing else for me to learn and so right here in verse 10 paul is going to confirm no no no your education doesn't stop god has more deep wonderful things that he wants to teach you but how is that going to come verse 10 he says but god has revealed them to us through his spirit for the spirit searches all things yes here it is the deep things of god that's right so it's the guidance of the spirit that when he join when we are joined together with the holy spirit and the holy spirit is now leading and guiding us we learn more we grow in that wisdom as christ did in wisdom and stature and in knowledge we grow we expand in the education by the holy spirit's guidance and this is drastically important even today we're talking about the early christian church but this is just as important today as it was for them back then for us today because in revelation chapter 12 verse 17 we're told of how god has a say a people some saints that are being attacked by the enemy the devil and he's making war with those people who have who keep the commandments of god and have the testimony of jesus but here's what's amazing the testimony of jesus according to revelation 19 10 is the spirit of prophecy god wants to not just teach you the you know the deep wisdoms of his character and his knowledge but he wants to expound to you even more of the deep prophetic elements and understanding of what's going to happen in the last days and my friends how's it going to come it's going to come by the spirit of the lord if you don't have the holy spirit dwelling in you to teach you and to guide you how are you going to be prepared for the soon coming of jesus and that's the whole thing that paul is mentioning here i'm not going to be able to read all of this but i want to get down here to this last part verse 16. because he he said yes he uses the quotation from isaiah and notice what he says here and by the way this comes from isaiah chapter 40 verse 30. he's quoting isaiah but notice paul adds something he says for who has known the mind of the lord that he may instruct him according to isaiah isaiah said that's impossible nobody can do that but now who knows the mind of the lord paul adds it he clarifies it now i notice what he says but we have the mind the mind of christ that's why i always love second peter chapter 1 verses 19 through 21 because it reminds us that when we pick up this word and we read all of the beautiful pages and all the beautiful messages and even the deep prophetic things of scripture it's coming from the holy spirit of the lord he's our teacher he's our educator and we should listen amen you know i am just sitting here as all of you are teaching thinking how thankful i am that this is all posted on youtube as well you can go back and pause and because you've said so many wonderful things i'd like to give each one of you just a little while to kind of sum up your day well jesus is the greatest teacher uh in the past and future and today uh i'm reading to you from councils on sabbath school work page 77 notice the weighty truths of god's word are for those who are humble and willing to learn at the feet of the divine teacher jesus amen and amen amen amen i had tuesdays moses and the prophets the bible as textbook and why is that so important because the word of god is living and powerful god's word is alive and it has life transforming power for you and for me amen talking about wisdom james says in one verse five if any of you lacks wisdom let him ask of god who gives to all liberally and without reproach and it will be given him amen peter reminds us in second peter 1 chapter 2 or chapter 1 verses 20 and 21 that there is no private interpretation that the spirit that the word of god came by the spirit of god and we need to humble ourselves in these last days to be prepared for the soon return of jesus absolutely and education should be on redemption this is why this is education and redemption because we want people to know the truth of the beauty of our lord and savior jesus christ we are so excited that you've joined us we want you to join us next week as we will be looking at lesson number nine the church in education so we'll see you next time [Music] you
