This is why I love Foolish Baseball. I guess I'm more of a casual fan in that I mostly pay attention to my team and then look at any big news and highlights from around the league. Because of that I don't really know much about players like Tim Locastro, or I'm too young to remember players like Old Hoss Radbourn. But now I know more about a really interesting player I wouldn't have thought about otherwise.

I’m going to mail Arizona a blank lineup card, they may fill it out with any and all Red Sox players they would like in exchange for Tim Locastro and I will call it a deal.

Tim locastro is sick. Buddy stole 17 bases without being caught. That’s second most all time for a rookie

I hope he starts more next year, he’s super fun to watch. He can’t hit for power at all but he can manufacture a run with an HBP or an infield single + a SB all day. And he makes great plays in the field

Plus he was 10 for 13 for me this year in Beat the Streak πŸ€“

He had 3 HBP in one game? That’s one of the crazier stats I’ve ever heard

you know what enough with these superstars Justin Verlander bye-bye Mike Trout see ya Juan Soto adios knock knock it's me I'm at your door do you have a few minutes to talk about Diamondbacks outfielder Tim Lee Castro well you clicked on this video didn't you didn't you all-star games eight wins Above Replacement psy Young's MVPs Hall of Fame sure sure sure sure that might be in vogue now but give it ten to twenty years and Tim la Castro's will be all the rage you like speed you like infield hits like stolen bases Tim Lee Castro is actually the fastest man in baseball look it up actually don't look it up I'll explain why in fact I'll explain something even crazier too you see Tim Lee Castro's dirty little secret is that he's cracked the code he solved the case no more of this Oh boohoo he's so fast on the base pass but you know what you can't steal first base you could keep well Tim la Castro figured out how to steal first base and it has made him into my favorite weird player he should be yours too [Music] drafted out of ithaca college in the 13th round Tim Lee Castro wasn't ever really a big prospect in fact some might used the word non prospect but then again you know so are you you're a non prospect by still love you he was originally in the Blue Jays organization but was traded alongside pitcher chase Taeyang for international bonus slots on July 2nd 2015 just in time for signing day wait the Blue Jays signed any important international amateurs that day Oh hmm so he ends up playing most of his my early career with the Dodgers he appears on a Dodgers prospect list in a section called others which is a globe review of his skill set he then gets 15 plate appearances for the big league club between 2017 and 2018 what happened next may shock you but the Dodgers decided they actually didn't want Tim with Castro I reached out to the Dodgers asking why they didn't want your favorite weird player in their outfield and they just started listing off outfielders on their roster I hung up the phone before they finished so he gets traded to the Yankees that offseason but he's not home free yet the Yankees trade him to the Diamondbacks just a couple months later Tim Lee Castro is on his fourth team he's entering 2019 and he's about to become your favorite weird player here's the thing what we really love his fans is the outliers the extremes we love the pitcher who throws the hardest but we also love the guy who rarely touches 90 we want to cheer on the human skyscraper but we also support short kings I'm not sure if the Blue Jays Dodgers or Yankees knew it but when they traded away Tim Lou Castro they traded away the fastest man in baseball let's talk about it thirty point eight feet per second that's what Tim lacayo averages on what baseball savant and statcast identify as competitive runts for example they wouldn't measure your time on a lazy pop-up but they would on a weekly hit or top grounder that could be beaten out for an infield single that's actually half a foot per second faster than the next few runners Byron Buxton and Trey Turner that doesn't seem like much but that half a foot between first and second is actually the same as the gap between 2nd and 12th in my Albert Pujols video we talked about a runner who is painfully slow and we used one of my favorite baseball savant features which allows you to simulate a 90 foot race between players want to see Tim Lou Castro vs. Albert pools Oh a photo finish on that one when you're as fast as Tim Lou Castro which you'll never be because you're out of shape you're a mess look at yourself look at the stock photo of a mirror anyways when you're as fast as Tim Lou Castro you're always a threat for an infield hit in 2019 Tim Lou Castro hits 70 ground balls to end fielders now usually hitting a ground ball to an infielder is a death sentence DJ LeMahieu hit 205 such ground balls this season and leg tout a hit only 21 times for a 102 babbitt batting average on balls and play Tim Lee Castro though 17 hits and 70 ground balls when Tim LoCascio hits the worst batted ball out there he's still bats 243 he still wins 24 percent of the time let me put it this way Tim Lee Castro bets 243 on ground balls to end fielders the past three years Albert Pujols has hovered around that mark on all balls put in play Tim Lee Castro is the anti Pujols wanna see Tim Akasha versus Albert Pujols again there just goes there goes and winner you have a smorgasbord of infield hits here here are some great defenders failing to make a tricky plays like Nolan Arenado or Dansby Swanson I feel bad for them but my favorites are the guys who clearly did not read the scouting report on Tim Lee Castro actually authored the scouting report on Tim Lee Castro it goes like this if you're an infielder attempting to throw out Tim Lou Castro you better hurry that's it that's all it says Orlando Arcia buddy come on there's no such thing as a routine play when Timlin Castro is in the building Vladimir Guerrero jr. Tim we capture make something like a real chump on that one oh and picture in a footrace against the Castro no chance he's just too fast his speed can also give defenders fot an acronym meaning fear of Tim watch the ohon Camargo try to field this ball off a weird hop he knows that this is his only shot Jesse Biddle has to rush this throw and misses his target so he doesn't always need a hit he could reach on error so now the fastest man in baseball is standing on first base he's going to do what he does best create chaos on the base pass but first want to see him race Mike Trout oh no oh oh oh thank god Mike Trout is so faster how do I look like a real chump if Mike Trout won that one I used to be like you I lamented the decline of the stolen-base goner the 1980s when leaked leaders would challenge for triple digit totals even earlier in the 2000s guys like Juan Pierre and Jose Reyes could swipe 60 or 70 bags in a season now the relentless plenty of the percentages has greatly decreased steel attempts after all why risk being thrown out stealing second base when so many runs are scored on homers these days it makes sense but it's not fun Tim Lee Castro is probably never going to steal 60 bases in a season but he is doing something that makes base stealing fun again and it's very 2019 let's pretend that base stealers were art thieves you know suave international art thieves it sounds crazy but bear with me now perhaps the most exciting bass dealer of 2019 was Ronald a Cunha jr. who swiped 24 bags in the second half while chasing a 40 40 season but what if Ronald a Cunha jr. were an international art thief he would have started the second half with a successful heist against the Padres on the 14th of July then he follows up with two robberies in Milwaukee there's no telling where he'll strike next on the 17th he gets Milwaukee again and executes a perfect getaway after a job in Atlanta against the Nationals but then on July 19th something bad happened Ronald Acuna jr. was caught stealing his crime spree came to a screeching halt the chick was up they locked him up and threw away the key so what's so special about tim la castro he has never been caught stealing in the major leaks 22 executed heists including 17 this year alone he's still at large the police are baffled he's the only player in MLB history with least 20 career steals without being caught and His perfect 17a no record in 2019 is the seventh most anyone has ever put down in a perfect season speed kills but in order to steal second you must reach first base and Tim Lee Castro isn't an all-star hitter but he has figured out how to do the one thing that other speedsters can't do Timlin Castro can steal first base fire in Buxton you know this guy a maniac on the base pass with a paltry 292 career on-base percentage an even better example would be Billy Hamilton who is also in the same range Timlin Castro doesn't have this problem currently rocking a 356 career on-base percentage that's well above average let's take a look at their 2019 stats this is the Castro hit for average nope he looks a lot like Buxton Hamilton does he walk frequently nope once again right in line with the other speedsters so how does he get on base so much [Music] in 2019 Timlin Castro was hit by a whopping 22 pitches in 250 plate appearances that's a rate of 8.8% it's the most pitches anyone has ever been hit by in the season with less than 300 plate appearances and it makes other ball magnets look cautious in comparison in fact he managed to tie the MLB record for most hit by pitches in a game with 3 which he accomplished against the Giants last May Anthony Rizzo is known for crowding the plate and his 27 HP peas led the National League the third time he's done so in his career but those 27 plunking 's came over the course of 613 plate appearances for a rate of 4.4% 'la castro doubles that according to my film study 'la castro has borrowed techniques from the all-time great many of you will know that Craig Biggio is the all-time leader in getting hit by pitches and the Castro crowds the plate similarly but he also employs the use of an elbow guard so he can just stand in there and that results are profound if you just use walk rate but Castro compares to Buxton and Hamilton these aren't exactly the opp guts but if you factor in the rate at which he's hit by pitches he's suddenly a lot less like byron Buxton and a lot more like Bryce Harper really it's a beautiful system and it keeps pitchers on it's the whole time because like Asher is such a threat on the base pass one pitch that's a little inside and he could very well end up on second base after a quick steal so there you have it your favorite weird player was a non prospect is the fastest man in baseball is an international art thief still at large and has figured out how to steal first base could it get any better you bet it can I only have a little bit of video left so I'm just gonna enter a quick like rapid fire mode about why you should adopt Imlay Castro as your favorite weird player let's go one he had to walk offs this season so you know klutz Jean I guess - he once reached first on a pass ball strike three stole second base and scored the go-ahead run on a balk and that wasn't even the only time he scored a run on a ball this season 3 his only career home run came in Yankee Stadium ants one of the teams that traded him sweet revenge for and he could flash the leather a little bit with that speed like that time he ran a hundred and sixteen feet for this fly ball look I'm a SAP I see beauty in this game it says so much about the human experience Justin Verlander's throwing a hundred and two miles per hour waste losing Mariano Rivera doing everything right but still getting a bad result Pedro Martinez having the greatest peak ever but not so much in terms of longevity these are the topics I cover this is where I can use Tim Lee Castro's persistence and thinking outside of the box mentality to make a statement about life itself not gonna do that though it's too predictable I like Tim Lee Castro and I think he's cool if you don't like him well you could just buzz right off that's right roll credits no sponsor get out of my sight [Music]
