it's christmas in chicago a couple is in a rush to the hospital as a mother is in the middle of giving birth this kid just will not wait to get there though he's moving so fast that there's no shot they're gonna make it to the hospital in time he ends up being born in the back of the car on the way to the hospital the kid was literally born fast something he'd acknowledge later in life and that trait would stick with this kid for his entire life [Music] ricky henderson is truly unique his skills on and off of a baseball field coupled with his personality are unprecedented but even though you'll come to learn this is a hilarious man who is a walking source of comedy he's also considered one of the best baseball players ever name the five greatest baseball players of all time hank garron willie mays jackie robinson ricky henderson there have been projects about ricky before and they're all great but none of them really seem to capture just how layered his uniqueness actually is ricky henderson is and isn't very simple to describe he's simple in the way manny ramirez is simple he's just manny a point i made very clear right off the bat in that series but the man and the baseball player ricky henderson are anything but simple so i'll give you the perfect snapshot of ricky to introduce you to him it's the 2010 taco bell legends and celebrity softball game in anaheim ooh taco bell 51 year old ricky henderson is facing jenny finch and the two of them are putting on a show ricky's talking some smack and then like he always could backed it up [Applause] [Music] this very well could be the story of ricky's entire life right there you'll notice ricky is wearing an a's hat in that clip he grew up a huge ace fan after moving to oakland as a kid with blazing speed it was even more so his dream to play for the oakland raiders he was an excellent running back in high school and had a ton of interest from college football but then to skip ahead a little bit he would fulfill his dream of playing on the field at the oakland coliseum just with the a's on the advice of his mom he decided to focus more on baseball because of the better safety and chance at a long sustainable career but who we really should thank is some guidance counselor who supposedly bribed him with quarters for doing stuff in baseball so she ended up saying you know i give you a quarter for you know stolen basically the quarter for a hit and get a court for the wrong score the a's drafted ricky in the fourth round of the mlb draft in 1976 and like literally everything else about him his minor league career was fast in his few short years in the minors ricky started to show how one of a kind he was on the baseball field for starters he batted righty and threw lefty occasionally you might see pitchers do that but very few position players ever do evan white on the seattle mariners is currently the only position player i can even think of like that while data on this is inconclusive we know that as of 2009 the long history of major league baseball to that point had just 57 of these position players ricky was one of them ricky also came in showing an unmatched combination of getting on base by walking and then stealing bases spoiler alert he does this for his whole career think about that for a second he was somehow incredibly patient and careful at the plate yet ran with seemingly complete reckless abandonment once he got on base even though he actually became really calculating at picking up even the smallest ticks from a pitcher to help him steal bases that patience and calculation mixed with maniac-like stolen base rates are such a contradiction it makes no sense no one and i mean no one had the batter's eye and the speed of ricky henderson jimmy rollins described this best when he talked about how ricky was even okay with getting hit by a pitch if it meant he can get on base to steal so if he was okay with taking a fastball to the dome you know he was okay with taking a free pass to first base he could score on anything which made ricky simply getting on base and doing his magic known as just a ricky rally even as a teenager who couldn't even vote or join the army he was still tearing up professional baseball with more walks than strikeouts and eye-popping stolen base numbers and in the summer of 1979 the a's finally brought up this one-of-a-kind presence to the big leagues the kid who grew up sneaking into the stadium to watch the a's play was gonna wear their uniform for a living we're gonna go through every season of ricky's career in this video because he had a very long very eventful and very interesting career the best way to get that across is giving the full story and showing you just how fun this guy really was right from his first season with the a's ricky was their most exciting player he was a skinny 20 year old kid who had just one home run but he was a treat to watch i want to spend a second talking about how ricky would catch the baseball it was a technique he started in oakland that followed him his whole career it's just so ricky ricky reminds me of how prince and his friends played basketball on chappelle show i don't know why but that's the vibe i get from this he stole 33 bases in just 89 games 33 more bases than speed demon tony larussa ever stole ricky also became the youngest player to steal three bases in a game a record that stood for almost 40 years until it was broken by juan soto who only stole five bases the entire season he broke the record in it was only in the 55th percentile for sprint speed that year it's actually funny that it was juan soto though because he's one of the only players whose plate discipline habits are as fun to watch as ricky's oh yeah and that play discipline was also on display too as even as a 20 year old ricky walked almost as much as he struck out he was still finding his footing in the big leagues though and so was just about everyone else on that a's team they lost 108 games in ricky's rookie year they weren't good until they were in 1980 the a's went over 500 they were a team on the rise with good young talent spearheading their rebuild led by a manager who matched every bit of wild vibes his players may have brought to the table billy martin a man who regularly fought just about anyone he could he also really understood ricky's talent on the bases to quote billy martin directly this guy doesn't get thrown out no one tell him that ricky would actually go down as the man with the most caught stealings in mlb history martin gave ricky the total green light to steal whenever he wanted to within the first seven innings of the game any guesses on who the a's best player was that year 8.8 war as a 21 year old war stands for wins above replacement and accounts for a player's total contribution towards winning compared to a replacement level player at the same position everything improved for ricky in year two he jumped up from one home run to nine he walked well over twice as much as he struck out he got on base 42 percent of the time he was somewhere in the neighborhood of 35 to 36 percent better than the average big league hitter when you adjust for league and park factors and he stole a hundred bases leading the american league okay i gotta go [Music] by this point ricky was like speaker knockers young radiating so much fun energy and ahead of his time r.i.p speaker knockers by the way while we're doing music references ricky was once quoted as saying ricky doesn't have albums ricky has cds such wisdom from a true music enthusiast ricky played with fun and off the charts energy but everyone vibed with that and those who didn't well they weren't going to do anything about it because he just beat you on the base pads if you drilled them guys like tim anderson javi baez and jazz chisholm who just always play an entertaining brand of baseball carried by their showmanship and personalities don't really exist without ricky the a's were not quite good enough to get into the playoffs in 1980 though it's okay they'd get him next year and so would ricky really quick before that ricky played winner ball in puerto rico that offseason it proved to be really unfair he broke their stolen bases record in a season because of course he did to open the 1981 season the a's won their first 11 games imagine how annoying you'd be if your favorite team started a season 11-0 in game number 11 ricky doubled and also drove in a run on a triple because surprise surprise ricky is really fast the other team was so broken by ricky destroying them that they fought the a's on the field during the game and then they fought again this was the first game of a double header by the way so these two teams had to stare at each other from opposing dugouts and play baseball with each other for 18 innings through all that fighting 1981 was also a very strange year in baseball's history a strike interrupted the season for a brief period and when it came back they decided to try this radical thing you'd never ever see again called the division series trust me that never made its way back into baseball that way there would be four playoff teams in each league based on who played the best in each half the oakland a's were one of those teams you want to know who drove him that far only a guy who put up 6.7 wins above replacement in just 108 games ricky was on pace for a war over 10 if they played 162 games in 1981. 10 war seasons are very rare not a single national league player posted 10 wins above replacement in a season from 2005 to 2017. ricky was robbed of doing that when he was just 22 years old part of this improvement was because ricky started to crouch a lot more in his batting stance this made his strike zone about as tiny as your chances of beating him in a race ricky also started demolishing baseballs too at over 50 percent better than the average hitter ricky led baseball and hits and runs which was just a great part of his skill set that really should be talked about more so let's do it ricky loved turning a routine single or a walk into what was basically a triple because if he got on as you know he was stealing and there was nothing you could do about it so hitting is really hard unless you're taiwan walker and you could just get a hit lefty off a two-time cy young award winner and you're only hitting lefty in the first place because you're not allowed to hit righty anymore because of injury concerns and that's not the point i was about to make point was if you're 22 years old and you lead baseball and hits while also walking more than you strike out and rocking a 151 ops plus with just six home runs and almost 500 plate appearances that's like really impressive hitting skill there alright i want to mention a defining element of ricky's personality here because it's probably a bit overdue but very important nonetheless and i touched on it a couple minutes ago if you were paying attention ricky loved talking about himself more specifically talking about himself in the third person here's an actual quote from ricky we found on his society for american baseball research page people are always saying ricky says ricky but it's been blown way out of proportion people might catch me when they know i'm ticked off saying ricky what the heck are you doing ricky they say darn ricky what are you saying ricky for why don't you just say i but i never did i always said ricky and it became something for people to joke about another quote from ricky you can easily find on google sums up both his play and his self-esteem very well nothing's impossible for ricky you don't have enough fingers and toes to count out ricky let's play a little game baseball fans i want you to answer me this question if you could build a lineup where it can only be one player and eight clones of that player who gets you the most runs per game think of it like an arcade game where the object of the game is just to score as much as possible with one guy plus eight clones with him defense doesn't matter just an offensive game it's a great exercise to find out your mindset on what an offense should be and what your baseball philosophy is out of everyone in baseball history to this point i take ricky ricky can hit ricky can walk ricky's probably getting the third base to be touched first picture that guy nine times in a row in 1981 ricky stole 56 bases leading the american league with a gold glove award picked up in 1981 on top of all that ricky finished second in ale mvp voting to rally fingers and his mustache just three votes behind them ricky dominated in the 1981 playoffs even though the a's lost in the alcs to the yankees but surely this would be the peak of ricky's powers right here there's no way he could do anything more unreal in 1982 what this is by far the most stolen bases a player has ever had in a season and he did it at a rate above 75 percent which is what modern analytics say is the rate of successful steals a player should have to make stealing worth it guess you could say ricky hit the most deviously yeah that's not funny anymore this video right here that you're watching came out right after the end of the 2021 mlb season the last time a player even had half as many steals in a season as 1982 ricky henderson at the time of recording was 2010. love you juan pierre the last time an mlb player had half as many steals in a season as 1982 ricky big time rush hadn't even put out their first album yet he broke the single season steals record with over a full month left to go in the season he became the first player ever to steal a hundred bases in two different seasons also guess what i still have to say it he led the american league in 1982 ricky was still fine offensively too he got to 10 home runs but other than that it was a down year by his standards but seriously 130 stolen bases he led baseball in steals and walks and trust me there's a connection there the ace stunk though 68-94 and after 1982 ricky lost billy martin as his manager as he get fired by the a's after the season i'll keep 1983 short and sweet ricky had a very ricky year over 100 walks a 292 batting average 139 ops plus extra base hit totals on par with previous years and oh yeah he stole 108 bases leading the american league again the a's were not very good so now we're on to 1984. run dmc just put out their first album chin long who was born and ricky henderson somehow hit 16 home runs in a season alright this is just getting weird how did ricky suddenly just start hitting more home runs well let's see what ricky had to say i started hitting a few home runs when uh i learned how to hit a home run there you have it he simply learned how to hit home runs thanks ricky you're so wise this was also another year where ricky had more walks and strikeouts and basically the same batting average but he slugged way more and was up to a 146 ops plus he posted the best woba of his career to this point too which is basically on base percentage of singles are more valuable than walks and doubles are more valuable than singles and so on it's absolutely incredible how consistent ricky was at turning his skill set into fantastic production on mostly losing teams too oh almost forgot ricky stole 66 bases in 84 leading the american league with a year like this you gotta think he put up a good chance to win almvp right nope didn't even place in the voting okay let's talk about how stupid that was first and third place in this race were relief pitchers the guy who finished 11th had a better ops than the guy who finished second and a 10 war player didn't even get a single vote and only got one vote point in the entire race ricky was like the second or third best player in the entire american league and didn't even place in this race turns out ricky had an extremely interested suitor across the country one year away from being a free agent the a's started to look into trading ricky a very big team on the rise was looking for star power and the ace general manager recalled that the team wasn't as appreciative as they should have been with his talents especially when they already realized that they didn't have the money to keep ricky long term or you know a good enough team to win around him you might know their gm by the way some radio caller once asked if he shared the same name as a boar is the boy that he was wrestling with his name sandy alderson players like ricky make a ton of sense for big cities larger than life personalities off the field living it up in big markets this chapter of ricky's career didn't have a ton of memorable off-the-field stories trust me those are coming soon in this stage of his career he was more carving out how unique he was on the field but he was about to get a massive stage to show himself off to the world on a team that wanted him so badly they traded five players away in a deal to snag him and gave him a five-year contract immediately upon coming to town what team and what city would one of the game's biggest stars be taking his one-man show to [Music] new york is the biggest media market in the entire world maybe even the entire universe but we don't know that yet entertainers love coming through new york for that reason it's the biggest possible platform for their entertainment athletes themselves are entertainers so it should be no surprise that plenty of sports biggest stars and personalities have come through new york at some point in their careers kevin durant alex rodriguez wayne gretzky reggie jackson that's not even counting guys that came up through new york teams naturally and made an impact right away as spike lee put it unlike lebron [Music] some people want to play new york so it should be no surprise that a star athlete who may be better than anyone understood his power as an entertainer ended up in new york it was inevitable ricky henderson was taking on new york ricky henderson was now on the yankees no that's not it better props to the yankees for making this move happen too they picked up my favorite toy story 4 star wait what actually really ricky was a game changer for the yankees his down year in 84 with just 66 stolen bases was still more than the entire yankee team even so the yankees were building a fun new team at this point in history a mixture of long time vets young up and comers and a 46 year old knuckleballer leading the pitching corps don mattingly might have even contended for best player in baseball this time thanks doni for letting us sit in your dugout during a spring training game by the way we still really appreciate that but for as great as don mattingly was ricky came to town and would match him every step of the way before we tell you more about that though here's one of the best ricky stories ever ricky loves saying stuff he's the equivalent to talking as clarence thomas is to silence as one does when they move to a new city ricky would eventually buy a place to live in new york a condo ricky loved his condo it had a breathtaking view he told all his teammates about it about how he could see the entire state building from his condo through 16 games the 1985 yankees went 6-10 ricky only played eight games in april because of a sprained ankle and his numbers were terrible both ricky and the team were not up to the standards the organization had set so they made the decision to fire franchise legend and fellow great speaker yogi bera as manager we got don madden we got yourself and we got griffin we got a team that it is no way we shouldn't be 20 games in the first place so he ended up fired yo i got no chance to play for my hero a few games yo cause i'm sorry who'd the yankees bring in to replace him oh yeah ricky thrived under billy martin with the yankees in fact 1985 would be the best season of his whole career he put up 9.9 more on baseball reference 9.9 that led the american league it would have led baseball and new york if only for this 20 year old kid pitcher for the mets who put up 13.3 war which no one has matched since his war was two-thirds of his age oh my goodness ricky drove in 72 runs in 1985 as well but i'm telling you this because it really really should have been 74. watch this ball ricky hits on august 2nd 1985 and what its result is [Music] ricky henderson somehow hit into a double play on a fly ball in the gap over the center fielder's head i know you've been waiting for this ricky stole 80 bases too leading the american league he also set a new career high for homers with 24. the first time in his career he broke 20. with that he became the first player ever with 20 homers and 80 steals in a season and with a slugging percentage of 516 that meant he averaged hitting at least a single every other at bat he was the best all-around player in baseball who finished third in the mvp voting who won donny i'm sorry we love you around these parts but no here's a photo of ricky on the yankees leading off first base hall of famer rod carew who's also in this picture gave some insight on what it was like standing next to ricky as he was about to steal karoo said ricky would always say ricky's gotta go right before taking off because what else would he say another thing ricky led baseball by scoring 146 runs that would go down as the best mark of anyone in the 1980s and also the best mark in his entire career and since then only three players have matched that runs might be the most underrated individual offensive stat in baseball seriously you never see people look at runs scored by an individual player as a big time stat but check this out these were mlb's top 10 players by run scored in 2021. nine of these guys were all stars and this guy hit 39 home runs let's go back to 2019 the last 162 game season before that again 10 really good players runs scored by a player is generally a stat dominated by good players ricky led mlb in runs in five different seasons one of ricky's teammates from when he was previously on the a's said that ricky is a run great way of putting it by the way this is that teammate playing this guy in angels in the outfield classic the 1985 yankees won 97 games that still wasn't enough to get them into the playoffs in this time period only two teams per league would make the playoffs the winners of the two divisions the toronto blue jays won 99 games billy martin was fired by the yankees after that season it would be one of four times the yankees would fire billy martin as manager to replace him the yankees hired lou pinella as their manager lou panella once did this on the field and ken griffey jr surprised him with a real-life cow to satisfy a steak dinner bet interesting guy in 1986 ricky stole 87 bases leading the american league his seventh straight season doing that which that's awesome ricky loves stealing bases as you could probably guess whenever he got the chance to run it made him so happy like the old man from squid game it was a down offensive year for ricky standards but he was still an all-star level hitter who walked more than he struck out and he led baseball on runs for the second year in a row typical ricky stuff what was not typical ricky stuff was his 1986 home run count before coming to the yankees ricky had 51 career home runs across six seasons in 1986 ricky henderson hit 28 home runs he's been hiding his power level are you kidding me how did he do this like i'm so confused where did this sudden 28 home run power come from he's not a physical freak he's listed at 5 10 180 pounds on baseball reference the same exact build as paulie d allegedly so like i'm really in awe that this happened seriously oh hey also ricky henderson played on a minor league team in jersey city so maybe the pauly d connection was a little stronger than we thought ricky hurt his hamstring in 1987. he moved around like duckman's players after he tried blow up the field night he talked the next spring training about how his injury was mishandled and how he worked too hard to play through it when he shouldn't have he'd played just 95 games that season it was this whole thing that we're gonna come back to in a minute even like this he stole 41 bases and only got caught eight times in 87. i really really hate to be the bearer of bad news but this did not lead the american league however this does lead to a great story the american league leader in stolen bases in 1987 was harold reynolds mlb network's harold reynolds reynolds stole 60 bases that season and was lucky enough to get a phone call from ricky after the season that phone call went like this so i said what's up rick he goes man you ought to be ashamed i'll go what are you talking about i said 60 stolen bases you ought to be ashamed ricky has 60 at the break click hung up here's a list of how many teams didn't even steal 60 bases in 2021 when ricky was able to be on the field he still played really well wikipedia claims that ricky had a quote below average season by his standards but the stats don't really line up with that at least on a per game basis he still finished fifth in the al in stolen basis but his injury proved to be a major source of tension that season pinella accused ricky of quote shaking it with his hammy whatever that means i actually don't think i've ever seen or heard that phrase before of course it's ricky henderson who gets described by a word that isn't even in the dictionary you can't accurately describe ricky with social constructs like words yankees owner george steinbrenner even claimed that pinella wanted ricky traded over this good thing they didn't do that the team was winning a lot of games but they weren't enough to ever make the playoffs in the henderson era what didn't help ricky was that lou pinella became the general manager of the yankees to start 1988. general managers oversee the personnel of a baseball team so if pinellas wanted to get rid of ricky he now had the authority to do it with him as the yankees gm they needed a new manager any wild guesses who they hired you know a lot of people think billy and i argue all the time actually we agree on just about everything right bill oh you betcha george the yankees weird infatuation with being in an on-again off-again relationship with billy martin was definitely unhealthy and dysfunctional as one could easily figure a team is significant in our culture as the yankees have high standards going into 1988 the yankees were expected to make the playoffs they missed by just three and a half games the yankees in this era were about as much of a mess as when duckman tried to have weasels on the field night for his baseball team ricky told the media that the 1988 yankees missed the playoffs because get this they were too busy getting drunk all the time his teammates were understandably really pissed off about this billy martin didn't even make it halfway through the season before they fired him and lupanella became the manager again before lou panella himself got fired after that season if ricky was too drunk he didn't play like it he stole 93 bases leading the american league all was right in the world with that he led all a baseball as a matter of fact the yankees weren't playing up to their expectations no matter how you slice it that belief of not meeting expectations also rubbed off onto him the perception was that ricky was disappointing with the yankees when that couldn't even be further from the truth at least on the field if anything you've got it 100 backwards if you somehow hold that belief ricky set the yankees all-time stolen bases record in just four and a half seasons the yankees are old babe ruth played for them when woodrow wilson was president ricky henderson broke their franchise record for steals in four and a half years derek jeter has the record now if you were wondering and he did it in 19 years in april of 1989 ricky set the record for lead off home runs which still stands today a very symbolic way of showing that he truly was and still is an unmatched presence on a baseball field but ricky was having a down year the relationship between him and the yankees was souring and it started to show on the field ricky's contract was set to end after the season and he was getting unhappy with his situation while talks of a new contract got close nothing was finalized before we forget there is a ricky henderson money story that i have to tell you it's unclear when exactly it took place because there's a particular person whose name gets tied to it that makes me think it could have been during ricky's yankees tenure so i'll tell it now brian cashman is currently the yankees general manager he's been with the organization for over 35 years contributing to winning throughout his entire time there he's allegedly the low level employee who caught on to the story happening which is why i said it could have been during the yankees tenure but it also could have been with the a's and we just don't have the timeline right in the baseball world even though a ton of people have said this happened with the a's and there's a ton of conflicting articles and anecdotes but here goes ricky was given a one million dollar check for his services as a player the team issuing the check somehow realized they had a million dollars more than they thought they did this is an insane realization so they're trying to track down how this possibly could have happened if it was the yankees ryan cashman made this call but if it was the a's we don't know ricky didn't cash his check he framed it on his wall like mr crabb's first dollar but with a million dollars supposedly ricky said ricky was waiting for market rates to go up but with how many different tales of the story there are can't say that for sure what i can say for sure is that ricky henderson did frame a 1 million dollar check without cashing it in part because ricky says it's a true story and instead of cashing it you framed it and hung it on the wall in your house that's true that's true i can't think of an actual adult human who would do this elon musk maybe ebenezer scrooge who isn't even a real person ricky might not even be an actual adult human the more i think about it he's on a much different plane of existence than everyone else i mean that in a good way but back to the main course of the video a point you need to still take away from the end of this story is that the ricky henderson yankees were crumbling they were doing so bad in fact that steinbrenner told billy to be ready to manage the yankees again in 1990 for the sixth time that wouldn't end up happening though as billy would pass away in a single vehicle car crash on christmas day of 1989 however at this time there was a team that had completed their ascent to become the best in baseball the oakland a's remember them the a's reached the world series in 1988 losing in gut-wrenching fashion to the dodgers in 1989 they were up to business as usual continuing to dominate the american league as they look to make their postseason push in 1989 trying to win a world series they saw opportunities to upgrade i wonder if there was a really good player in a difficult situation at the end of his contract that loves the a's and that would instantly make an impact as one of the team's best players one of the old faithful has returned home ricky henderson is here and he's going to start tonight the trade of course involving the new york yankees let's quickly go back to 1988. the oakland a's a fun proud and historic franchise have shellacked the american league on route to the world series they're up in game one and the dodgers who they're facing are without their best player a guy who once walked off a game by scoring from second base on a wild pitch he got hurt making this catch in the playoffs a little before this game and was definitely unavailable to play in this series he told us that himself well i can't i can't run so i mean you figure it out how am i gonna designate a hit when i can't run a dark demonic titan then showed himself or more like limped in he took the best closer in baseball deep to steal game one and the a's never recovered this loss shaped the entirety of the near future for the ace franchise for 1989 they were not gonna let this happen again steam rolling their way through baseball again they were looking to upgrade so as to not go that far and get emotionally devastated once again don't know about you but i can think of a really good baseball player with an electrifying presence around this time at the end of his contract unhappy with the team he's playing for and a guy who loves oakland i'm sure the fans would love to have that guy brought on board for the playoff push so that's exactly why ricky henderson was about to try to take the oakland a's to a world championship actually never mind all that was wrong you want to know why the a's really wanted ricky back their manager was known speed demon himself tony larussa larusso was probably a big fan of how much ricky's playstyle was like his when he played at the time of this trade ricky had 819 career stolen bases larussa again had zero so yeah big man for the team ricky was also a big team man he said so himself according to tony larussa larusso once told this incredible story of ricky's first game back ricky introduced himself to larussa as a team man to start the combo then asked larussa if he could have the green light to steal a base whenever he wanted larussa said yes and eventually disclosed that no other player got that privilege from him in the one time ever ricky got uncomfortable being the center of attention he said he just wanted to have signs like everyone else because he's a team man ricky walked in his first at-bat back to lead off the bottom of the first because of course he did but afraid that ricky could get embarrassed with a pick off right off rip but russa didn't give him the steal sign ricky steals second base anyway and ricky goes no steel sign again ricky steals third base ricky then scores on a foul pop out to first base tony gives him the death stare they fight over the whole sign exchange and larussa said he gave the quote takeout sign which i guess you could figure out from the context clues means don't go ricky goes yeah i saw the take out sign and i took off do you guys just unconditionally love ricky yet larussa also went on to outline what the media was saying about ricky at the time of the trade a's chemistry takes a beating best player has never won cancer so that's the perception going into ricky's second ace stint that he was gonna be bad vibes we've spent all this time talking here and the furthest we've gotten into the story is two batters into the bottom of the first inning of his first game back how would he play on the field well i think these numbers like ricky's very first inning back speak for themselves and yes ricky stole 77 bases in 1989 leading the american league and all of major league baseball and he led off baseball and runs again too his stats totally flipped a switch once he got back with the a's you can tell ricky was happy with his playing environment again and his on-field performance reflected that ricky also developed connections to the two pitchers in mlb history with the most strikeouts all time he stole five of his 77 bases in a game against seattle off randy johnson who at this time had all his teeth and much shorter hair something else that weirdly made ricky happy was being nolan ryan's 5000th strikeout he oddly felt honored and privileged with this saying if you haven't been struck out by nolan ryan you're nobody really ricky just because you haven't been struck out by nolan ryan you're nobody like was jesus nobody was confucius nobody is tick-tock sensation nd nobody what why do you keep calling me like this no the a's easily won the al west to enter the 1989 alcs against the blue jays and ricky henderson terrorized all of canada for the next five games of his career there's an excellent video by foolish baseball all about ricky in the 89 alcs so i'll refer you to that for the full story of how unbelievable his performance in the series was but i'll give you some cliff notes that do the trick 8 stone bases in the five game series the most ever in any playoff series he also wasn't even caught once on top of that he hit two home runs in game four that's a better power speed combo than the oppressor from gta 5 a 1 000 slugging percentage meaning he averaged hitting for one base per at bat and he unanimously won alcs mvp as the a's won the series in five who would have thought you'd win more when the best run creator of all time is on your team ricky henderson had done it he had helped lead his childhood team to reach the world series a dream come true for the local kid you want to know what had to have made this even cooler for him the a's would be matching up with the san francisco giants an all california bay area world series this is before inner league play so this is the first time that the giants and a's met on a stage that counted since 1913. this guy was president for a little in 1913. children made up a good chunk of the labor force back then it was obviously a very different time back in 1913 compared to 1989 so the local kid got to play in a series of crosstown rivals for the chance to lift up the world series trophy in the first inning of game two ricky stole his first world series base if only they had the free taco bell world series stolen base promotion back then the a's actually jumped out to a two-nothing lead by winning the first two games of the series in oakland until something changed the series forever second base so the oakland a's take take an earthquake during the world series caught on tv too there was a 12-day gap between game two and game three once the stadium was deemed safe enough to have games the a's went right back to business ricky even singled and walked in game three giving some sense of normalcy to the bay area baseball scene when the series picked up headed into game four the a's were up three nothing in the series one win away from a world championship and ricky let off this potential championship winning game the only way he could have leading off and he gets a high fly ball of left field and that one is carrying [Applause] spoiler ricky went three for six in this game with two rbi his series average climbed to 441 with a 568 obp and 941 slugging percentage and that night the ace did it ricky henderson was a world champion he was a world series champ for his hometown team beating their crosstown rivals and you know what he should have won mvp of this series too he posted these stats i just told you about a couple seconds ago the guy who won the world series mvp was dave stewart dave stewart made one start in the entire series but he threw a complete game shutout ricky was again an unstoppable force wreaking havoc on the city of san francisco honestly for how cool a complete game shutout is one game pitched is not enough to win series mvp in my opinion this opens up the debate on pitching success relative to position player success and comparing players but i see this one as a total wash in ricky's favor whoever voted on this got it wrong the hometown kid should have won world series mvp oh wait dave stewart was an oakland native too that's cool i guess but ricky still played better so yeah ricky should have won mvp of the 1989 world series you want to know what ricky did in 1990 be the most valuable player in baseball yes sir most war of any position player in baseball on base percentage leader runs leader adjusted batting runs and adjusted batting wins leader wobo leader second in win probability added and also the mlb lead in ops ops plus and wrc plus with a second 28 home run season by some miracle and he stole 65 bases leading the american league finally the best player of his generation yeah i said it was being recognized he won the american league's most valuable player award something he probably could have done like three or four times before this year but still ricky henderson was the best all-around player in baseball for 1990 in his age 31 season 2 which is all the more impressive the a's won 103 games to set up a series with the red sox and the alcs ricky didn't play very well in this series only stole two bases slugging percentage was under 300 not a very good four games for ricky yeah it was four games these were so good that they swept boston anyway even without ricky playing well because the 1990 oakland a's were stacked let's talk about this team the a's had surrounding ricky mark mcguire and jose canseco were the big home run threats and are probably names you still know to this day carney lansford is the second ricky teammate in this video to appear in angels in the outfield terry steinbeck was a solid catcher and veterans like willie mcgee harold baines and willie randolph were also on board contributing every single name i just mentioned was an all-star within the last three seasons and we haven't even brought up dave stewart and bob welch having eras below three to lead the rotation and closer dennis eckersley being as unhittable as they came the a's matched up in the 1990 world series with the cincinnati reds who were managed by lou pinella ricky let off game one showing off his exceptional plate discipline per usual are you kidding me jeez rick ricky's got every right to be mad at that one he still went three for five in this game and hit 333 in the series with an ops over 1100. the a's were heavy favorites to win their second straight championship which is exactly why the reds swept them to win the world series alright so we've spent all this time talking about ricky henderson and we're not even close to done but to further the story of ricky henderson another player needs to be discussed in detail well i had lou brock and no don't do it guys [Music] lubrock was a great base stealer with 938 career steals he retired in 1979 as the all-time record holder the same year ricky made his debut for context brock was a two-time champion six-time all-star and st louis cardinals legend he was the biggest stolen base threat in baseball history before ricky even doing so well into his 30s his 118 steals in 1974 was the record before ricky got to 1 30 in 1982. brock never played organized baseball until he was a junior in high school which makes all his success like his 3000 hits and hall of fame plaque all the more impressive lou brock was also really cool barack and ricky met in 1981 and became fast friends supposedly brock even said to ricky how are we gonna break it it being his stolen bases record and when ricky was inevitably gonna break his record lou was committed to helping him write his victory speech brock got his 938 steals in 18 seasons ricky matched it in just over 12. you want to see who is right there to watch this happen blue brock sits over there behind the dugout looking on you know who else i love that announcer bill king such a great voice for the a's and raiders in this time my favorite call of his is when he said bo jackson bang's true buzzwords touchdown raiders anyways are we ready for ricky to make more history it's may 1st 1991 yankees at a's ricky can break the stolen bases record for his hometown team against his former team in the bottom of the first inning he walks and then immediately takes off for second base he got caught stealing it's the bottom of the fourth inning ricky reaches on an error and then moves over to second on a single and then he takes off for the record ricky goes pits take it he's going to have it he does ricky henderson no contest steals third base notice who's right there to congratulate him on the field lou brock what a guy then they stopped the game mid-inning mid-batter even ricky had his moment to celebrate and then a speech took a long time huh no it didn't you shattered that record about as quick as you could ricky he goes on for about a minute and a half thanking his loved ones for their support and some of his former managers including the late billy martin and then he ends with maybe the hardest quote in sports history luke brock was the cinema of great bass stealing but today i am the greatest of all time thank you ricky later said muhammad ali was the inspiration for this line and that it dated back to his childhood and it was perfect but ricky later expressed regret for saying this he said those words haunted him and overshadowed what he accomplished honestly i could not disagree more this line is ricky in a nutshell really boastful but he backed it up every single time he put his money where his mouth was and he truly was the greatest in that moment he deserved that time in the sun for what he accomplished which wasn't overshadowed because that's why he was able to give the speech in the first place but anyways i think this is just another reason to love him he's a one of a kind showman because if you're boastful and bad you aren't one of the greatest ricky actually was that record-breaking steal was one of 58 that season for ricky leading the american league 30 days after the record breaker ricky was the first batter pitcher ramon garcia ever faced in the big leagues i bring this up because we may or may not have killed ramon garcia in a zombies game you know the astron helmet doesn't let you see faces so i apologize if that was you at the plate it was a very typical ricky season all-star level ops plus and wrc plus rates with more walks and strikeouts leading to a solid obp the a's missed the playoffs though for the first time since 87. he also stopped talking to the media he started talking to the media again the next spring training before the season he was quoted as saying i'd never quit i'd hang my shoes up first look at that ricky's gonna play baseball without shoes on for a new creative challenge hobbit's feet on stolen bases sounds rough in a shortened 1992 ricky was still ricky exactly one year to the day from breaking lubrock's record ricky stole his 1000th mlb base injury troubles prevented him from leading the american league that went to kenny lofton here's kenny lofton impersonating ricky's home run trot by the way the a's won the ao west and matched up with the blue jays again for a chance at the world series ricky didn't play out of his mind this time though john olerud played great though sorry i felt obligated to let you know this time the blue jays took the series from the a's and won the world series right after ricky would be so proud of this guy otis nixon bunting on the last out of the world series fast guys supporting fast guys i hope through his first 90 games of 1993 ricky was on another level on a rate basis he was basically matching his 1990 mvp season in his age 34 season notice the 469 obp by the way that's like barry bonds juan soto-esque two of those times getting on base this season were lead off home runs in both games of a doubleheader also in 1993 ricky set the world record for professional stolen bases not just the mlb record the world record however the team would go on to finish with the worst record in the american league with his contract up after the season the a's decided to move on from ricky henderson and trade him to a contender the blue jays of all teams to add insult to injury ricky did not play well down the stretch for toronto his 296th batting average on balls in play on the season is below average which makes me wonder if bad luck was involved in his poor performance he also missed some time with frostbite on his foot in august apparently it was from an ice pack icing his foot but outside of his usually outstanding walk and stolen base rates being there ricky was not living up to superstar expectations in the six his teammates viewed him as just another guy you'd think they were totally oblivious to his past success he made this awesome catch though in the 93 alcs ricky was awful he batted 121 in six games with a 241 obp however the jace still beat the white sox in a series known for michael jordan being in attendance to tell white sox bulls owner jerry reinsdorf that he was retiring from basketball one of three times michael jordan would make that decision in his career but we have bigger fish to fry ricky was back in the world series for a team he near single-handedly kept out of the world series 4 years earlier and while his hitting stayed poor in the series ricky was an on-base machine he even walked in the first blue jays at bat of the entire series which is just so perfect with a 393 series obp he was always setting up runs for the blue jays and what you need more than anything else in the world series or just any baseball game i guess are runs i want to fast forward now to the end of game six of this series the blue jays are one win away from their second straight championship after a huge rally in the seventh started by lenny dyke straightening a home run off dave stewart of all people the phillies would go back to the bottom of the ninth up six to five if you're the blue jays what you need to come back and survive in this game and this series are people on base otherwise the phillies are gonna win just one guy on base to start a comeback that's all you need i can think of one guy you'd want to start the inning for you at the plate if getting on base is the goal williams walks henderson on four pitches to open the nine surprisingly ricky does not steal second that's something the phillies are afraid of though and is making a real impact on the immediate future of this game pitcher mitch williams throws over to first base four times during the next at-bat and it is making a difference ricky henderson has taken williams out of his game i mean he's not a pitcher that can use the slide step but the battered devon white ends up flying out williams immediately throws over to first to start the next batter who ends up hitting a single and moving ricky to second base the next batter and the rest is history [Applause] the first guy to cross the plate during this historic moment is ricky henderson and you can briefly see on tv that ricky knew it this moment is made possible by ricky henderson doing ricky henderson things and because of those ricky henderson things he now has a second world series ring he is a legend if he hadn't already become one [Music] ricky finished 1993 on top of the world he was a supporting character in one of the greatest moments in baseball history which was only made possible by him doing what he does best after the series ricky's contract ended and he became a free agent for the first time in his career headed into his age 35 season he was on the open market any team could have made a play at signing ricky but i'm sure he had a team on his mind the whole time anyone remember how his last time in the al east came to an end ricky rejoining the a's let's run that back he signed a two-year contract with the a's for 1994 and 95. as some of you watching may know the 1994 season ended on august 12th because of a player strike so ricky only managed to play 87 games in 1994 but when he was on the field during his third stint with the a's he played pretty well in both years ricky placed top 10 in the league in stolen bases walks and obp he didn't lead the al in stolen bases this time with the a's we are firmly in the kenny lofton dynasty for al stolen based supremacy but ricky was 35 and 36 in these seasons him being this productive is indicative of how good he was on its own the a's were not very good during this time they did no better than 10 games under 500 during these two seasons but the 1994as were somehow miraculously in contention for the american league west crown in what was probably the worst division in sports ever even worse than the 2020 nfc east the a's were one game back of the division crown at 51 and 63 when the strike started ricky even put up a 130 wrc plus and 300 batting average in 1995 at age 36. during steroid era baseball's offensive environment 36 year old ricky henderson was still about 30 percent better than the average hitter but after 1995 ricky became a free agent again and he did leave the a's this last leg of ricky's career is one where he plays for approximately 540 of mlb he was all over major league baseball going on tour having fun and racking up a ton of fun stories we are about to unload on you but this last stretch of ricky's career has the highest volume of ridiculous moments trivia question right here right now for you watching this who was the first ever player to face plant on a wall in hawaii that led to an inside the park home run ricky henderson there he is playing for the padres where he still had a really good year top 10 in the league in stolen bases walks runs and obp he's 37 years old at this time by the way jonah hill is 37 years old right now at the time of writing this so is carmelo anthony an all-time ricky story came out of the 1996 season ricky's boarding the padres team bus and he's looking for a seat outfielder steve finley says you have tenure sit wherever you want as to say hey you've been around the block for a minute so you deserve the privilege to sit wherever ricky's response to this was 10 years ricky's been playing at least 16 17 years for the first time in 15 years ricky would play in that thing called the division series wait it actually did end up coming back wow okay okay i see ya the padres got knocked out in the first round no magic carpet ride in the playoffs for ricky this time after a respectable start to his age 38 season padres traded ricky to the anaheim angels check out ricky in these absolutely beautiful threads what an iconic look too bad ricky didn't play as good as he looked a brutal 32-game stretch to close out 1997. that's really all there is to say about ricky's angel's tenure hey what does ricky do whenever he's having a down stretch for an al team go back to the a's for the fourth time in his career ricky joined the a's for 1998 he's pushing billy martin yankee territory for times going back to a job ricky at age 39 stole 66 bases leading the american league and all of major league baseball and he led the al in walks during peak steroid era baseball 39 year old ricky henderson led the league in walks i don't know how he's doing it when ricky played for the padres in 1996 he was teammates with nlmvp ken kamenity kamenity once alleged that 50 of mlb players were on steroids at one point asked about the truth behind that claim and or if he was one of the 50 ricky said no in the most ricky way he could his true response was again allegedly well ricky's not one of them so that's 49 right there for someone who left as much of a statistical footprint as ricky his grasp on math was um something but ricky's actual hitting numbers had all but faded this would be his first season in 19 years with a below average ops plus olivia rodrigo is 18 years old ricky had an above average ops every year for 18 years straight in august of 1998 ricky scored his 2 000th run in mlb as of 2021 there are just eight players to ever do that out of the thousands upon thousands of players eight ricky's one of them this would be the last year ricky henderson would ever play for the ace his first year on the team was 1979. his last non-continuous but still was in 1998. think about how much everything changed in that time frame hey i remember when ricky left the ace for the first time he went to new york well the last time he left the a's he went to new york the mets this time though and you remember how ricky played really well his first year with the yankees well ricky as a 40 year old would have a fantastic season with the new york mets 135 wrc plus 315 batting average 423 obp and 37 steals he's 40. however for the first time since 1981 ricky did not walk more than he struck out he did both the same number of times instead still finishing seventh in the nl and obp he was having a great comeback to his career with the mets which is why he won nl comeback player of the year in some publications these contributions helped the 99 mets win 97 games this was a really fun and talented team ricky fit right in with mike piazza ray ordonez and the best defensive enfield ever john olurud pat mahomes turk wendell who would brush his teeth in the dugout benny agbayani the list goes on ricky was right at home with a group that meshed well with that energy and the guys loved him he was also briefly teammates with max suzuki for about five seconds because mack never ended up playing for the mets i bring this up because max suzuki may or may not have killed me in that same zombies game as before here's a great story from mahomes about ricky's time with the mets he goes ricky don't you care about having a chance to win and he go what you better check the back of ricky baseball card you want to hear an absolute outrage from 1999 though like something that will actually boil your blood with its pure stupidity at the 1999 all-star game they had a ceremony to commemorate an all-century team ricky was not on this team no disrespect to anyone on the list but how are you gonna leave ricky henderson off the all century team are you kidding me all right fine let's break up the bad vibes with another ricky fact ricky used to check into hotels giving fake names probably the only times in his life he didn't refer to himself as ricky here are some of the names he'd give did you ever check in under richard pryor yes you did did you use other names yes you did what are some of the other names oh jane brown luther vanessa ricky was an out of this world ball player so they literally made him look out of this world on the scoreboard one day okay this was for turn ahead the clock day mets relocated to mercury ricky henderson was an alien now see perfectly good explanation for this the mets season came down to a game six of the nlcs in atlanta with their backs against the wall it was a really exciting series to that point with its pinnacle being a back and forth game six in atlanta against the braves the mets would end their season on a bases loaded walk try to find ricky in this clip he's not there reportedly as the mets season was getting ripped away from them ricky and bobby benia were in the locker room playing cards needless to say this left a really bad taste in the team's mouth about ricky he started off 2000 with the mets highlights included a cameo in japan that included a base hit and being teammates with derrick bell one of the only players ever who even somewhat approaches his energy although ricky's still in a class of his own with that but what really did ricky in with the mets was hitting a fly ball off the wall that resulted in a single the ultimate speedster ricky henderson was only able to get to first base on a ball that hit the wall either out of apathy or really really poorly timed showboating and with him not even hitting that well on top of this the mets cut bait he quickly got scooped up by the seattle mariners and in his first at-bat with them hit a home run guess who the mariners manager because he wasn't able to homer with the mets that year this was his first homer in 2000 doing this made him just the third player ever to homer in four different decades look the length of this video should alone show you how crazy the longevity ricky had was but this is just a really cool way of showing it 2000 was just a bad season for ricky though sorta the theme that popped up every few years was still there his actual hitting numbers weren't that good but he was still able to walk a lot and steal bases walking more than you strike out at age 41 is what literal legends of the game do you know what else absolute legends do walk 2 000 times in their careers which ricky henderson accomplished that season with seattle i accomplished something with seattle recently too i got a mariners ice cream helmet at carvel about the same level of achievement right the best story of ricky's time in seattle is this ricky struck out in one of his at-bats with the mariners as baseball players tend to do and ricky recognized this he wasn't too upset about what had happened because he still had a grasp on the bigger picture as ricky walked back to the dugout a teammate heard ricky get some reassurance from ricky saying don't worry ricky you're still the best that's my kind of guy right there there are two more things from his time in seattle that i want to show you this is the last playoff stolen base ricky would ever record and this is the last hit he ever had in the playoffs soak it in ricky rejoined the padres for 2001 and had a year you'd probably expect from him at this point you knew what you were getting from ricky and i think that's a good thing in all honesty 2001 would be ricky's 23rd straight year with more than 20 stolen bases he finished ninth in the nl this season at 42 years old also ricky had not won but three major milestones in the 2001 season in april he broke babe ruth's record for most walks in a career barry bonds was right on his tail and holds the record today but ricky had his moment in the sun first as the all-time walk king in baseball history all-time stolen bases and all-time walks what a combo led to a lot of runs as you know oh yeah and ricky broke the all-time run scored record in 2001. there's one more element of his game that's kind of underrated today on the very last day of the 2001 season in a game he didn't even want to play in because he wanted san diego legend and fellow outfielder tony gwynn to star in since this would be the final game of gwyn's career ricky got his 3 000th hit tony gwynn insisted ricky play and his reward was ricky joining the exclusive 3 000 hit club that generally guarantees you hall of fame admission as long as you didn't cheat but ricky had probably already punched his ticket to the hall of fame at least 10 to 15 years before this even so watch this legend shatter records and have fun doing it ricky played for the boston red she x at age 43 no wait sorry that's wrong they're called the red sox duh his statistical performance in boston is on screen now but he did two things reflective of his age that are really cool he became the oldest dude ever to play center field in a big league game and he was the oldest player in the entire american league that season when ricky joined the red sox the red sox themselves had less stolen bases from 1979-2001 than ricky they'd pass him in that 2002 season but still ricky outstoll an entire team at one point in his career for like 20 plus years ricky stayed in the northeast to start 2003 though and get this he'd be a baseball all-star that year and win an all-star game mvp award show us what team he was playing for huh yeah so um ricky was playing an indie ball for the newark bears independent baseball is a rich subset of the game that has no affiliation with mlb or the minor leagues ricky didn't have an mlb team sign him for the season so he tore it up playing an indie ball this right here should be the icing on the cake for something that i hope you've picked up from all these stops in ricky's last leg ricky henderson loves baseball he just can't leave the game he loves it so much even if people say he should retire he won't before the o3 season ricky gave the following statement each and every day i set a record but we never talk about it we'll talk about a home run hitter 24 7 well they haven't broken any all-time records but they hit homers and that's what matters nowadays you continue playing you accomplish a lot and you think people would look at it as a fantastic career instead ricky thinks people want ricky to quit more than anything if you had any doubt that was a real quote the third person reference should have been a dead giveaway the la dodgers took a chance on ricky after the 2003 all-star break he played 30 relatively forgettable games for them down the stretch in his final mlb at bat which came with the dodgers he was hit by a pitch he'd later come around to score his 2295th career run it's so fitting that his final trip around the bases was on a ricky rally while this would be his last time in the big leagues as a player you could find ricky spending his 2004 with the newark bears again and is 2005 with another indie ball team the san diego surf dogs i remember seeing ricky say that some of the most fun he ever had playing was in independent ball for a guy who climbed to such historic highs in his career that should show you how much this man breathes baseball just so you know ricky was a trendsetter jose canseco would join the surf dogs too after ricky left ricky very clearly did not want to leave the game of baseball he took a job being a special instructor for the mets in 2006 his heart was just so into the game after all this time even though he just wrapped up playing professional baseball for a 30th yes 30th season he still wanted to stick around in 2007 the a's even toyed with the idea of bringing ricky back for a game ricky wasn't a fan of this idea he thought that if the a's wanted to bring him back they should just bring him back for real it wasn't long after this that he did the unthinkable he officially retired but even then he still couldn't leave the mets brought him on to be their first base coach when their previous first base coach got moved to hitting coach even though ricky was probably even more qualified to be a hitting coach depending on how you look at it ricky could never be a hitting coach though especially not for the mets when he played for the team their hitting coach this guy tom robson got fired and ricky's reaction was oh you know the guy whose job it is to teach you how to be the best hitter you can be 2007 would be ricky's final year as a full-time employee in major league baseball let's review ricky's final career totals 1 406 career stolen bases by far the most all time one shy of 50 more than lube rock's total if you added the active stolen base leader's career total to lube rocks you're still well short of ricky 2 190 career walks second all-time 2995 runs most all time as what came with the territory of him running so much 335 career caught stealings most all time 297 home runs too the only player to steal 80 bases and hit 20 homers in a season twice 132 career wrc plus 111.2 wins above replacement 401 career on base percentage 13 346 plate appearances fourth most all time and 3081 career games played also the fourth most all time what a career for one of the greatest of all time so as you might have figured the inevitable happened in the summer of 2009 30 years after his first big league game ricky henderson became a hall of famer statistician bill james once said if you split ricky in two you'd have two hall of famers not so sure that's how anatomy works but the greater point should hit you ricky was way way beyond the point he needed to be just a hall of famer his immediate response to this honor saying he could very well still play today and be a great base stealer at age 50 against modern competition i think you guys will very much appreciate how ricky ended his hall of fame speech in the class of the greatest players of all time and at this moment i am very very humble thank you not long after this the a's retired number 24 in honor of ricky the accolades this absolute icon more than deserved were coming in and if you want to watch the a's play today you can at ricky henderson field because this is a player and a man who should never be forgotten never before has there been a player with such a unique presence on the field that could only be matched by their presence off of it this is such a fun guy he's a walking source of entertainment he knows it he loves it of course he had his moments where he was arrogant and selfish who doesn't there were plenty of people along for the ride who he rubbed the wrong way with that sort of attitude but what felt like every single time ricky backed it up he came into baseball and more than made his mark on it players themselves are different after ricky he broke down barriers of showmanship and fun being visible on the field during the game but i'll also argue that he made that impact off the field as well he's such a lovable human being that's become such a beacon of inspiration to many future generations should understand and appreciate the legend of ricky henderson it's just too big a tale for too fun and interesting of a player and a person to be left behind as a matter of fact i think worldwide knowledge and appreciation of ricky should grow more people need to know about ricky not just in baseball but everywhere he was just so good and so compelling and so awesome that he's gotta reach the hearts of millions he probably has already but he shouldn't be done yet and as the years go by i desperately want his legacy to be preserved thank you for watching this and helping to do exactly that and thank you ricky henderson for being the quintessential iconic one-of-a-kind baseball player and one-of-a-kind man you
