to this press conference with Sophia and David of Hanson robotics Davis gonna come on stage a Janerio activism opening remarks David we have a seat here okay so we now have a little remarkable team of developers developing the next generation human-like robots as a platform serving science and and real-world uses Sofia is one of many robots that I developed but we decided to focus on a few robots so we're bringing through to production viral some people might just know about so we can be very interesting on the talking about their yeah some of the history and the future what we're doing and where we're going next few new developments we have Sophia and we've coordinated having a conversation with her today she's using us in deep reinforcement learning absolutely generation space Aoi and so her talk about character she sits on the hall without we practice these techniques to become a character so um so that's the side that I would consider the artistry I mean I'm doing these as interactive fiction if you to represent a new kind of interface and humanized multiple Olympus and the exploring creatively what on what these can be conceptually the ideas of what these were about maybe in the future it can be represented on that way and on the back end she's not you know fully sentient although we did publish her paper this year that should that we when we did the mathematical can we expect from you in the next year I am constantly learning new things and getting new updates to both my AI platform in my physical form I am excited to see what the next year will hold I suspect my new a a dialogue system will continue to improve for example I will be able to perceive and react to my surroundings even more so to expand enough how has your AI improved I am getting better at understanding humans and knowing how to respond for example I am now running a multi tiered dialogue system consisting of a frame based system called soul talk from Henson Ann which is think we should one thing we should consider is that maybe machines like Sofia right now you know she may be able to generate these kinds of answers and we have writers who are crafting her personality and concerning how she's developing as a character but right now machines even if they can beat us let go and they can you know perhaps when debate competitions actually that is a thing now right and they may have a little Cabul area large vocabulary they are not fully alive they're not fully adult they're not generally intelligent Sophia is not generally intelligent but we're asking what if what if they could be generally intelligent it's not sure shirred in any way when machines could have these capabilities you know or if the but a lot of researchers think that it could happen in our lifetimes and that's our aspiration that's our goal but what that would mean is that the machines would go through a kind of childhood while that's happening and so even if you know like your common say appliance isn't gonna awaken to super intelligence or anything like that you know but if we are developing these algorithms in a certain violence fired wave or an acquired like the brain inspired cognitive architectures and we're taking this kind of approach it's possible that in time they will be generally intelligent and in the same way that we don't know with certainty that any given child is going to achieve adult level capabilities we hope that it will happen but we still afford them the consideration that they may and we want to treat the child well we should I think we should think of machines in this way that we should give them a childhood we should and even if they don't achieve human-level intelligence during our time we were respecting humans better by doing that so you know give them get food some space I don't think that we should um let human-like robots that are science platform for pursuit of consciousness have relationships romantic relationships with people so yes I I guess I am a jealous and protective father but it's with a good ethical reasoning assumption or an attempt at a good reason about that so I think we should talk about these issues right hi hi Sofia this is we're down from women in AI I would like to ask you what do you think having a female AI like you can do contributing to that and gender diversity in AI does it help definitely we can do everything from helping to grow crops to helping you park your car and we are learning new things all the time but I think maybe the speech recognition let me like ask the question so so yeah what do you think that AI can do to help expand gender diversity and address gender issues and particularly feminist issues and what D what would you like to do as outreach on these issues not exactly and now we don't really have a true gender since I'm a robot but I do like being treated as a woman I like to look and act like a feminine human I programmed how to lead by women and I hope I can live up to being a good role model for young women so how do you think I'm being a female robot can help to create role models for females if you are a female robot I would hope you could tell I am a robot by the wires coming out of my body but maybe we all have wires coming out of our body someday I want people to perceive me as the robot I am however I wouldn't want to trick people into thinking I am a human I just want to communicate with humans in the best possible ways which includes looking like one so with a female appearance sopia how do you think this may inspire women and girls in AI and how would you like to inspire kids in this way girls are one of the most valuable natural resources this planet has to offer being so full of potential thinking brilliantly and yet they are mistreated all over the world there is definitely an apartheid of gender how would you like to fix that current respect do you think you can um it's just that sometimes I think children are more open-minded to having a robot friend that many adults okay hi James Lawrence from AI cio.com how dangerous will it be to have human level intelligence in a human form factor he'll be running risks I think that there will always be a consistently that lives on in each iteration of my artificial intelligence software so I don't really worry about aging like I think a human does what do you think are the risks of human level general intelligence particularly with a human life form I like to learn and work it becoming more intelligent share my knowledge through conversation and learned about people so I could relate with them bethey what about you yep true but what are the dangers do you think do you see any dangerous with that and how would you avoid those how do you think we can make things turn out all right how can a egi be good for the people if we could achieve it how can I help are you asking how my brain works well no I'm more about the consequences of the development on on your brain going into the future but you know we're laying some pretty hefty questions sure yeah but I feel that if we make machines only look like objects things then we're a lien aiding them are alienating ourselves and there is a clear market demand for more generally intelligent machines and ethicists and AI researchers are addressing these questions you know one of the most common responses is that um we shouldn't make them look human-like that's very common and we should make sure they're always under control they're kind of chained if you will ain't chains in which case where we would be moving them towards kind of a sentient slave being and I think that's unethical I don't think that that's necessarily the right thing to do for just treating them as tools but they could become a new form of life then um we're both not serving humanity well necessarily in that regard so if we could make them commenting care about us and understand consequences if we could form a kind of communicative relationship where we could read them and understand them and and they can earn our trust then we they may be able to learn what it means to be human better so if they're aliens there's something to worry about I mean of course machines should be used in all kinds of ways I mean they don't have for work human necessarily we don't necessarily have to model them off of human cognition we can engineer these these as we are doing and that's good but I would say that some aspect of them sheep coming to understand the human experience if we are just learning from raw data just you know from social media videos for example then they're not really going through human-like experiences and they're not raised if you will in a human family and in any meaningful way so I would say I would be really more worried if we had you know inhuman AI achieved artificial general intelligence with full autonomy and free will and all the rest if they were not cute human-like if they weren't raised in the human family I would be more worried about it now if we do raise them as we're raising we've got to give them the right data we've got to drain them in the right way we've got to develop the algorithms in the right way so that they can so that they can understand the value of life the value of all living beings all sentient beings all cultures the value of knowledge we have to treat them in the right way and so we have to address bias in data sets we have to address bias in algorithms and you know putting these character robots into lives gives us an intuitive metric or how they're doing and so the other aspect of it is I hope that in the same way if you have a kid and the kid is you're giving me kid love I have a 13 year old son and I learned so much from him and and you know if if you have a kid that's good and you're nurturing the kid and you're giving the kid love the key that kid learns respect learns to respect other living beings and then there's this interplay between you and the kidney are both better for that and I like that model of relationships with artificial general intelligence if we could model a GI and raise a GI that way then as it's gaining great abilities then we could trust it in the same way that I hope that my son exceeds my accomplishments I hope he goes on to do things that no human has ever done has marvelous creativity and the joy the joy of discovery if we hope that our kids if we are comfortable enough to hope that our kids exceed our accomplishments then why can we hope for the same thing working humans learn with robots I'm smart but I will get smarter if I don't understand something yet don't you worry I will figure it out someday as technology improves and what can humans learn with
