What A Mess I've Gotten Into: Failing Pond Overflow Replacement

and i'm off got a lot of work to do today right here that a couple other people have worked on somebody put a new overflow in it and it's leaking and the concrete pipe is laid backwards all the water is leaking through the joints and as you can tell the pond is far from full so with so much being done we're just gonna rip all that old stuff out and put in a new one let's get started come on hook oh [Music] so we just took the trash rack off as you saw it's like a 48 inch riser pipe 24 inch concrete through the pond dam but it is all laid backwards with the bells facing downhill uh there's like a six or eight inch valve in it uh you can see the pipe out there in the water we just took the handle off of it gonna try to salvage try to salvage the concrete pipe i don't know i don't know what's going on with this but i think all the riser and everything and maybe try to get that valve out of there but uh other than that all of it's pretty much a waste i'll pile this rock up over here interesting all right trying to get the first stick of pipe out and the hogs and stuff [Music] oh we got concrete around it [Music] around all of it [Music] yeah i got a piece here in the bucket was leaking everywhere [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] well i'm having to move to the side and dig up the pipe now oh boy [Music] they laid it over top of pure mud maybe it wasn't mud when they laid where it is [Music] i've yet to be able to budget [Music] [Music] they overachieved on some stuff because they have underachieved on the other here we are [Music] [Music] now that's a block of concrete [Music] oh boy that's not going to pick me we're going to roll that out [Music] yeah mercy [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] if i can break that end off like so lighten it up a little bit not much but a little bit [Music] this so [Music] [Music] come on [Music] so [Music] i don't know what went wrong i mean that's normally what you do when you have concrete pipe through a dam doesn't have the corrugations like plastic pipe you pour concrete around it but you can't compact under that radius [Music] oh god it was 10 yards the concrete [Music] [Music] here we go ah heaven [Music] if i can break that off a little bit [Music] [Music] like so [Music] [Music] what a mess so i got the box set i built a nice rip rap pad for that to sit on dug out all the old concrete pipe the anti seep collar and got all that down to original ground now i'm going to somebody's put some nice red clay back here put all that in here and compact that back in place to build a base for the pipe to sit on i got the compactor for the mini excavator so i can sit right up here and roll that in that's why i'm not really too worried about the slope there i don't have to get down in there and uh get that grade brought back up so we can set the pipe in there [Music] so [Music] that's a lot of concrete [Music] [Music] all right [Music] [Music] that's what i was afraid of [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] there we go [Music] so in the process of trying to load the dump truck i had a piece of concrete drop and knocked the bottom glass out i didn't knock it out but it shattered it the rest of it hit me luckily i had the windshield up and it didn't take out the expensive glass this is [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] well that's not gonna fit enough trucks [Music] [Applause] so [Music] [Music] that's a big chunk of pipe i had a boo-boo sitting there trying to load that big chunk of concrete in the uh truck there and break up the other one uh chunk flew off and hit my window luckily i had the top one open and it didn't suffer any damage but what the window didn't catch the rest come in here luckily i caught it and the other chunk went up there in the corner but it happens it happens luckily that one's easy to replace you just slide it out slide a new one in so it's concrete pipe going through there and honestly this is the way you're supposed to do it if you're on concrete pipe is pour a cradle around it well they're cradle didn't go all the way under it i'll walk down here and show it to you i gotta break that up before i can even think about getting that out of the hole or in the truck so what happened was the water was going under the pipe and here's why as you can clearly see right there humongous spider uh they set the pipe on blocks that's what you're kind of supposed to do get it up off the bottom but the concrete was so i guess stiff when they poured it it didn't go all the way under the pipe and all that pressure from the pond found that little bit of uh soft dirt right there and there it went the only way to fix that is to rip it out like i'm doing and put new back that's what i like about the corrugation pipe is it's got all those ribs on it for the dirt to pack in and uh hopefully that won't happen let's see if i can break this pipe out [Music] let's see if i can go about a more civilized way of breaking this it's really not there that's the problem we're going to break that up so it fits in the truck a little better than that it's like tear the truck up or tear the machine up hang on justin had to call me and tell me about how his day wasn't going very good let's get this broke up i will be happy [Music] [Music] hello dropping this stuff now come on just break from perfect [Music] one more [Music] [Music] i don't know if it's better to try to break that concrete while the pipe's still attached or break the pipe off let's try one good whack here maybe maybe one more time since i completely missed the concrete that worked pretty good it broke that off of the pipe and in half [Music] all right now i get to clean this mess up and get all that dirt cleaned out and compact it back in all right got the mini down there that was a little challenging a little sketchy i got it down there and uh it's more like sliding down these rocks and uh getting that dirt compacted in there with the sheep's foot and i just laid the bucket down here with a big excavator to grade that out i got to get that grade a little closer so we can go ahead and set our first piece of pipe in here trench bottom dug to grade stuck the little anti-seep collar right there where the joint's going to be i'm gonna go get the first stick of pipe set it in place [Music] [Music] all right got both pieces of the pipes put together let's put a little dirt around them [Music] turn around and run the jumping jack around it [Music] and then i can probably get on the treadlite with the mini excavator and run the compactor down [Music] [Music] so so [Music] so [Music] so we'll pack that in put the mini on top reach over and pack all that leave that for the anti-safe color that's the uh second time this 160's ever done a region i'll be staring at my handiwork down there they don't look so bad from the outside okay maybe it does glad i had the top wind chilled up that would have tripled that expense so uh got all the pipe put in today and clay compacted back around it we got concrete coming in the morning i gotta put a little more clay over top of that and get that packed in but uh yeah it's coming along sheep's foot compactor from felco works really good and sit in the machine and pack it all in this clay works great for it as you can tell good packing material right there that i used with it it packs it in there really well so come back tomorrow get our concrete poured and finish covering everything up with dirt and uh yeah get it everything done [Music] get another lift of dirt packed in here this morning and throwing it down in there john's on the mini packing it in there i'll have to clean out that little anti-seat collar right there if we put the concrete in there pack all that down pretty much waiting on concrete until it gets here about unfortunately about two hours to kill until it gets here rain tomorrow so we gotta get done all right uh [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] grout that in and we'll finish backfilling around the uh riser there getting our clay put back in here trying to use all the red clay on the area below the water line which after this pass i will be out of the water line so pretty much that's everything from the riser and below that needs to be good solid material so that it doesn't uh leak and then the rest i can use all that clay up there it's a good packing plate it's just a hodgepodge of all types i'm putting in a lift that he's tracking it in and packing it in with the uh mini excavator and the compactor [Music] you gotta pull the tubaphores out don't need those in there [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] so i guess the next lift i'll push over what i'm sitting on and then i should be able to reach across and start grabbing the dirt from the other side [Music] we'll continue on so [Music] [Music] all right so i got the manhole grouted around the pipe there and getting everything back filled and tracked in here at the slope put back finish touching that up and got the grading bucket on the mini finish dressing everything up with that so i get the rest of this dirt breakdown and packed in all right i got everything tracked in with the excavator packed down and we just set the trash rack back on we use the old trash rack just because it was stainless steel and actually looks pretty good and it fit on the new one so we reused that i'm gonna hop on the mini touch this up a little bit better and we're gonna go ahead and seed and straw everything and get out of here and all done everything graded out tracked in and seated and strawberry strawberry just makes everything look so much nicer a little rain tomorrow morning on it we're good to go ready for the pond to fill back up looks like it's about six feet low that should take care of it there's no more water behind the dam like there was when we got here
