our save yourself oh jesus christ [Applause] oh jesus [Music] [Music] our blood is [Music] so don't let your heart fix your eyes on this one truth god is in love with you then take courage hold on be strong remember [Music] jesus is is hold on be sure we praise god we lift our eyes up to the heavens he is name your heart's good holy children is is is his kingdom comes man you guys sound amazing today it is a privilege to be in the presence of god's people in the midst of a thousand voices just singing out whether it's here in the room whether it's online it's amazing to see what god does in and through us and one of the ways that we continue to celebrate together is by giving and what that is doing is bringing a portion of what god has blessed us with it's giving back to him because when we attend a celebration we don't just come by ourselves usually we bring something whether it's a gift whether it's our family members whatever it is we come to partake in whatever is happening and so when we give we're giving back a portion of what he has blessed us with is that just said to show that we put our faith that we put our trust in him and he's able to take what we give and stretch it even further than we can imagine and then the little that you still have he can stretch that even further because god wants to use what you give so if you'd like to do that with us today there's going but to know that i have a god that lives inside of me emanuel god is with us he is in me he's for me he fights with me or fights for me and i'm more than enough man that's it that's a game changer and lord we want to make sure that we give you that proper praise today we want to make sure that we give you the gratitude of thanksgiving that you deserve lord as we count our blessings one by one as we think about all of the the good things that you've given to us that we don't deserve we want to be in that posture lord of of praise and gratitude and thanksgiving you are such a great god and we love you for sending your son jesus to die on the cross and for being with us lord when we're hurting standing with us when we're celebrating or giving us the life-giving word of god this still speaks to our situation this is relative lord to our life we we thank you for these things lord we thank you for being here today and we look forward to seeing what the word of god has to say to each one of us today lord it's an honor to be in your presence among your people and all of god's people shouted amen and amen you glad to be in church today amen i'm glad you guys are here today i want you to high-five your neighbor and say man it is a privilege to be sitting next to you today and if you don't believe it just fake it till you make it or prophesy over them today it's gonna be a good day i can feel it right now i get to sit next to you awesome i want to greet all those watching the live man thank you for joining with us today wherever you're joining with us from it's an honor that you would take time out of your week uh your day your month or as a friend say even your year to be with us um and to be a part of what god is is doing here and he is doing a great work and we are such uh uh just humbled really to have the opportunity to participate with him stay engaged with us throughout the celebration just like the people in the room because at some point today they're gonna be shouting me down and you can shout me down online as well wake the neighbors as we like to say uh because it's worth it's worth telling a story about hey listen uh you're gonna see a lot of people in shirts like the one i have on today that's because we have a group fair today and we believe that you're never going to feel like you belong until you begin to give and serve and get in some sort of group here at mountain view so i think on the patio just right outside there's going to be some groups and you might meet your best friend by getting involved in a group you might meet your life partner by being being in a group and if you're single ready to mingle hey just make sure you get in the right group because if that'll get really weird if you get in the wrong group you're looking for a spout yeah don't get in the married couple's group uh that'd be weird that'd be weird but no in all serious uh you know life happens in in circles not in rows that's where you really grow and develop and and become a part of the body i also want to tell you about an exciting event that we have coming up labor day weekend it's the friday before you kick off uh your labor day weekend i know you're thinking you're going to kick it off friday afternoon no no no you're going to come to the praise party [Applause] that's going to kick off your labor day weekend you want to start the party right then you come to the praise party because he's going to get loud up in here we got a pre-party and an after party because there ain't no party like a mound view party that's right so you want to make sure that you come all right today we're going to start a little short sermon series and uh i think you're going to enjoy it it's just going to be a few weeks but to the title of today's message is hold on everybody say hold on let me overthink about it say that let me overthink about it because did you know that you are your own worst enemy can i prove that to you a best-selling author john acuff commissioned a study to ask people if they struggle with overthinking and a half 99.5 of the people i mean there's like one dude in the room like jake he's like jesus he's got the sandals and a long hair and a beard he's like i don't overthink anything 99 and a half percent of the people surveyed re r responded with the resounding yes they overthink overthinking is an american epidemic do you consider yourself to be an overthinker overthinking is when your brain spins on a thought or an idea or a conversation or a text longer than you anticipated and unfortunately overthinking has always been towards the negative worst case scenario left to its own devices your brain will naturally gravitate towards things that you don't want to dwell on here are a few signs that you're an overthinker you find hidden or underlying meaning in everything you're constantly analyzing people events and conversations you relive embarrassing or painful moments in your head repeatedly and are constantly reliving past mistakes you find it difficult to let things go you have trouble sleeping because your brain won't shut off you ask yourself a lot of what if questions you rehash conversations you had with people and you think about all the things you wish you had or had not said you think more than you do you dread one word replies you are a lover of list you have to have all of your ducks in a row and oftentimes you're not aware of everything that's going around you because you are lost in your thoughts now overthinking in its most simple form is ruminating about the past and worrying about the future but it all starts with a single thought every habit begins with the first time every pattern begins with a first line every journey begins with a first step and every action begins with a first thought here's a problem with that because psychologists say 98 of our thoughts are habitual the thoughts that we had today are the very same thoughts we had yesterday the day before yesterday and the day before that but the problem with that is 80 of our thoughts tend to be negative now you can consciously recall happy thoughts but the ones that just suddenly pop into your head uninvited they tend to be unhappy our brain likes to believe what it already believes we gravitate toward experiences and information it's called confirmation bias that confirms what we are already thinking about ourselves or in the world and i read a doctor's survey this way this is the funniest way to do it because this is the way that we would say in oklahoma he said bottom line is your brain is a jerk proverbs 14 12 says there's a way that appears right unto man but in the end it leads to death the apostle paul said a mind governed by the flesh leads to death whether it's a death to your self-esteem or your self-confidence or your self-worth if your mind is not being led by the spirit you will end up self-sabotaging every relationship every job every opportunity that god puts into your way if you always think negatively you will always react and be reacted to negatively and that's why paul went on to tell the the church in rome in romans 12 2 god will transform you into a new person by changing the way that we think in other words if we really want to become new we must renew our mind you can't keep thinking the same things and expect a different outcome because you can only act according to your belief system now what i love about the apostle paul is that toward the end of his life he did learn to master his mind the apostle paul realized that the real enemy or the biggest enemy that we all face in life is not out there the real enemy is up here we are our own worst enemy because us and only us have participated in every bad decision or every bad thought that we have ever had now paul didn't always have it mastered in fact if you read some of his early writings paul looked a little crazy which has really encouraged me encouraging me because oftentimes i feel a little crazy but paul kept battling and he kept fighting until he won that battle from his mind and we see that in maturation of his writings i want you to listen to what he says to the church of corinth in second corinthians 10. for though we live in the world we do not wage war as the world does the weapons that we fight with are not the weapons of this world on the contrary they divine power to demolish strongholds we demolish arguments in every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of god and we take captive every thought and we make it obedient to christ even if we are deliberate in every other area of life we tend to treat our thought life as something that we don't have control over we say things like this and if this is you just say amen or oh me and we'll know who we're talking to here i get lost in my thoughts my thoughts got away from me i fell into a black hole that's why you're married to jesus [Laughter] i got carried away you see the bible is very clear you can and you must control your thoughts because the most important conversations that you will ever have are the ones that you have with yourself you wake up to them you walk around with them you go to bed with them and eventually you will act according to them so write this down the most important voice that you hear is the one between your ears let me say that again for the people in the back the most important voice that you hear is the one between your ears and paul uses a very strict military term when he's writing to the corinthians and he wants to show them that by changing your thoughts your excuses your attitudes your narratives your assumptions by changing the story that you tell yourself the the the the story that you tell other people it cannot be a casual endeavor and paul uses extreme language to prove you and i have to attack this we have to fight this we have to go to war with our thoughts and some of you you're going to have to fight some thoughts that you've had for a really really long time and truly it's some thoughts that you didn't even choose but because of where you were born when you were born to whom you were born because of what someone else did or did not do to you what you did or did not do to another person what you saw or what you heard these thoughts just develop and paul says you got to go to war every single day with the arguments and the pretensions and the flawed conclusions or false assumptions that we have against ourselves or other people and the weapons that we use to fight this war are not of this world the weapons of this world are medicinal but those only work until the medicine runs out it's a substance but a substance provides nothing of substance it has no lasting value because that's why you have to keep taking it over and over again but for those of us who are followers of christ we fight with supernatural weapons and they have the power to defeat every natural enemy or thought that comes against us the the greek word that paul uses here for power you've heard me say this is the word dunamis that means that dynamite and paul says the weapons that god gives to his children are explosive and have the ability to demolish demonic strongholds now a stronghold is not a word that you and i use every day but it comes from the greek word which means a fortified prison and if you've ever been afraid or you've ever been anxious or you've ever been depressed or you've ever been lonely or you've ever been worried if you've ever been caught in a thought in overthinking what if cycle you know that you're in a mental stronghold and it feels like you're a prisoner in fort knox but paul said you and i have the power everybody say i got the power now you got to bring that up like three notches if you're going to say like i got the power was that cnc music factory who was that that sorry i didn't he says i got the power he said you and i have the power to demolish and destroy every argument and every evil thought that comes against us now here's why this is important you've heard me say this before the life that you live is a reflection of the thoughts that you think craig rochelle pastor craig garcia says that your life is moving in the direction of your strongest thoughts so if you want to change your life you have to change your thinking and to do that you have to take extreme actions because our thought which seems so small results in our actions and you have to embrace the truth that our thoughts matter because our thoughts influence our words which influence our actions which influence our habits which in the end create our life so our thoughts even though they appear to be so small determine who we become proverbs 23 says this for as a man or as he thinks in his heart so is he if you think you can't you won't but if you believe that through christ you can you will if you believe that you're a victim you will always see yourself as a victim and you'll always be a victim but if you believe that you can overcome through the power of christ you will overcome if you dwell on your problems your problems will overwhelm you but if you look for solutions and you look for the hand of god in every problem you will find solutions and you will see the hand of god in every problem if you think that life is going to be bad it will be bad if you think you don't have anything to offer you won't have anything to offer on the other hand if you believe that there are opportunities out there you'll see those opportunities if you believe that god is for you and that god is with you in a in a very real sense you will see his power and you will feel his presence because as a person thinketh in his heart so is he and that's the reason that god inspired the apostle paul to declare take every thought captive and let god transform you into a new person by changing the way that you think you see we can't miss the power of that statement let god transform you into a new person by changing the way that you think because the life that you live is a reflection of the thoughts that you think i don't know what you're thinking here today well love is a battlefield no no pat was wrong our brain is a battlefield we have to start thinking about what we are thinking about now here's the good news the good news is god is bigger than our brain because if you can worry you can worship if you can doubt you can dream if you have fear you can have faith the solution isn't to stop thinking it's just to start thinking the right thoughts because we live in the age of neuroplasticity and that means that we can physically change our brains did you know that that uh you guys may not know this uh for a few you may not know this that you might you used to be able to smoke on airplanes like every one of our cars had ashtrays it used to have them in the back door like you put your your your metal uh child safety seat metal right next to the ashtray i mean that's a great combination like the kid is smoking you just let ease his ashrae's right there i mean if he's got he don't have we used to give them cigarettes i'm just teaching we didn't do that but that's what it seemed like why am i telling you that because they used to believe that when you smoked it opened the collapse the capillaries in your blood vessels so that actually the blood would flow more smoothly so they would smoke before running a marathon aren't you glad we live in the the age of neuroplasticity meaning we can change our thoughts as we learn as we grow as we understand science and we understand more the word of god things can change that's a good thing because that means that every morning when we wake up baby nerve cells have been created overnight by our heavenly father and that means that we now have the ability to tell our brain what we want to think about in fact your brain every morning is waiting for you to tell it what to think it's waiting for you to tell it how to build a different life if you don't it defaults back to its hereditary dna in the old amygdala starts to go back to the lizard brain of thinking and now it's fight or flight you see every night you and i get the opportunity by the power of god to retire our thoughts and every morning we can replace them with new ones you see where are you going with this this is why it's so important that every single day at every stage and every age we start our day with prayer and praise here's what psalms says from the rising of the sun to the place where it sits the name of the lord is to be praised i also like what david says this is the day the lord has made i will rejoice and i'll be glad in it if our brain is waiting to be rewritten every morning then most of us we we we automatically start pouring coffee and turn on the news but that's not good because if it bleeds it leads this is this is this is just this is like a free i'm gonna give you a free nugget guess like free preaching i was charging y'all for the other stuff this is free how many of you the first thing that you get up do every morning is for coffee and you do that because you need the caffeine right you do know that's the worst thing that you can do hold on you better start throwing stuff at me drink water first water fuels your brain so drink water that gives you energy and now that your brain is thinking clearly with water now it's got water filling it then you drink coffee because if you drink coffee first it'll actually stagnate your thoughts so you fuel your brain with water see this is free i didn't even know this this is good it's good i'm a holistic preacher here mind body and soul everything we'll do jumping jacks here in a minute we'll get that part of it but you drink water it fuels your brains it fuels your thoughts then you drink caffeine it's kind of caffeine it's kind of like fan in the flame coffee but if you do it the other way water puts it just it's a crazy thing the way that the brain works why am i telling you this because if you get up and listen to the news for very long you're going to find out that we as a world are disappointed depressed alone angry addicted frustrated fearful murderous unstable unprepared unqualified hurt and hopeless and now all of a sudden we are fearing things we should be defeating fretting situations we should be conquering in attempting to control things we were never created to control and one thing that changes the brain faster than anything is when you start your mourning with praise you see entitlement is the voice of sin but gratitude is at the very heart of god and at the end of every day you'll remember all the way back in genesis god set back and he said this is good it's a miracle when he made miss amy say oh this is real good but the point is god started today with praise then he ended his day with praise and i'm telling you you are only one thought away from a totally different life and it's that decision that decides your outlook on life so the decision that you need to make today is to start celebrating and seeing god's miraculous hand upon you and be grateful for it every day because every day is a miracle and you really have two ways to look at life you can see nothing as a miracle or you can see everything as a miracle is this helping anybody in here today if it's helping you wave at me so i know who to preach to in here today jeremiah says his mercies are new every morning the apostle paul said in philippians 4 rejoice in the lord always everybody say always in good times in bad times when it's raining when it's sunny when i got a lot when i got a little when i see god when i can't see when i'm in the penthouse when i'm in the outhouse when i'm in the doghouse or when i'm in a love shack i am making the choice to rejoice say this with me hey devil i'm making the choice to rejoice amen i'm not where i want to be but praise god i'm not where i used to be i'm not stuck i'm stepping out i will overcome my fears and i'm going to build my faith at every age in every stage i start my day with praise and the best gift that you can give your brain every morning is water and worship but i gotta be honest gotta be honest i'm not a morning person told you guys this before i'm not saved or sanctified or spearfield before nine o'clock i gotta have me a little bit of jesus before i give you a little piece of my mind so i start every day with prayer and praise and i tell the devil you should have killed me while i was sleeping because i'm awake now and today is a new day and i don't know what kind of crazy i might run into today so i'm going to start my day with prayer and i'm going to start my day on praise because praise gives me a leg up on whatever satan is going to try to use to get me down you know people ask me this all the time they say pastor you spearfield i said heck yeah i'm spearfield because i need to spear when i go to walmart i need to spear when i go to circle k cause it ain't from god i don't know why we even create circle case and i'm sorry if you work there but the holy spirit is in qt that's what i'm trying to tell you guys circle k's come pre-dirty i don't know why they're brand new and they're already dirty i went in this week and took a bath in clorox when i left i'm telling you this is good preaching god says he gives a spirit without limit and that's why i go to quick i put my foot my face right underneath the coulee machine and i just keep drinking the holy spirit cooley your eye is a lamp that provides life for your body and when your eye is good your whole body is filled with light but when your eye is bad your whole body is filled with darkness that's what jesus says i know bono still hasn't found what he's looking for but jesus says you can find or you do find what you look for can i prove it to you because y'all don't believe me today i can tell like he lost me a circle k they got those 99 cents rubber cheeseburgers pastor i love those things in fact i put them in my tire when it's flat it really helps i had a bad experience this week i'm just telling y'all they didn't have my hostess donuts and i'm still a little bent on it do you know what a buzzard finds every day i mean you see him like this nobody knows a dead thing yeah yeah yeah do you know what a hummingbird finds every day it finds the sweet things you see every single day you flapping your wings and i'm telling you you will find what you're looking for you can find the dead things or you can find the good things you can find the stinky things or you can find the sweet things and that's what jesus is saying you can take a super problem and turn it into a superpower how by thinking about what you're thinking about so i'm gonna look for the good things the god things the sweet things the sanctifying things the edifying things the uplifting things the life-giving things the praise fueling things negative things nope no buzzard up in here sweet things yeah i'm a hummingbird in other words i caught a thought oh that's a good thought i'm taking that with me oh that's a bad thought i'm getting rid of that i caught a thought everybody say i caught a thought and paul says stop feeding your mind with the things of this world and start feeding it with the life-giving word of god a recent study showed that only 19 of church-goers read the bible every day for an average of nine minutes a day but we sit in front of a screen eight and a half hours a day and young people are spending four hours a day on social media it's no wonder we've gone back crazy if our mind is steered by the world and not by the word of god we're going to be tossed back and forth like waves on the sea and paul knew this because in acts chapter 27 he'd been on his way to rome and he was literally caught in a storm and i know that i've preached this before but this is so important i love the imagery and the scriptures the the ship was caught by a storm and could not head into the whim so we gave way to it and we're just driven along many of you are in a storm right now because storms happen but you can't give way to the wind if you have a negative thought and you just give away to it you allow yourself to be driven along and it won't be long before you lose hope and you drown and listen to what he says we finally gave up all hope of being saved and too many of us have just given way to our thoughts you have no anchor in anything so your life is unstable and your one situation away from a breakdown and paul said you got to attack it you got to break it down before you have a breakdown bad thoughts nope grab them you have negative thoughts nope i'm grabbing him i caught a thought everybody said i caught a thought he went on to say finally brothers and sisters whatever is true whatever is noble whatever is right whatever is pure whatever is lovely whatever is admirable if anything is excellent or praiseworthy think about such things and the god of peace will be with you when it comes into your mind you gotta take it captive and ask yourself these questions now i'm gonna give you some really practical things here's the first thing i want you to do when you have a thought when you catch it you caught a thought is it true one of the greatest mistakes that you can omit that you can make is assuming that all of your thoughts are true that just because it's in your head doesn't mean that it's accurate if the doctor gave you a serious diagnosis i hope that you would reach out to a second doctor and confirm what the first one said it behooves us which i always wanted to say that it behooves us it's like tim the torment tailor said it behooves us to ask someone is what we're thinking true satan is the master of lies so we need to line it up with the word of god is it true the second thing is it helpful does it move you forward or is it keeping you stuck does it help you find solutions or does it keep you focusing upon the problem does it generate action or apathy is this making me more like christ and more loving towards my fellow man is this helping me or is this hurting me number three is it kind do you feel better about yourself are you more encouraged or you discouraged because there's not a single study out there that says the key to becoming a better person is to criticize yourself more it doesn't happen would you say this to a friend if you said this to a friend would you have any friends and then put it to the philippians 4 8 test is it true is it noble is it right is it pure is it lovely is it admiral is it excellent or is it praiseworthy should i be thinking about these things does it lead to peace because thoughts are like logs floating down the river and you need to catch those thoughts and get rid of them eliminate them or let them pass or they're going to stack up so you got to do that let's break this down even further number one this is practical i really want you to take this home with you identify the thought that is holding you back you cannot defeat what you're not willing to define what is the greatest enemy or what is the greatest thought that the enemy is using to keep you from living the life that god wants you to live what is the lie that's holding you back you're too dumb you're too old you're too young you're too damaged you're not good enough you're never gonna have enough you're always gonna be behind you can't trust anybody i'm never gonna have a good job never going to find the job that i love never going to find love when a negative thought goes into your mind you have to stop and capture the thought and replace it with a different thought when your mind says you're going to blow it you're like no no no no i'm not going to blow it because god is with me and god is in me and god is for me and god fights for me the spirit the lord does not give me a spirit of fear no weapon formed against me will prosper i'm too blessed to be stressed i won't be worried because the joy of the lord is my strength you know doubt doesn't take work fear doesn't take work insecurity doesn't take work faith takes work i'm replacing the lie with the truth i caught a thought number two claim the truth that will set you free jesus said in john 8 32 you will know the truth and the truth will set you free paul said take every thought captive that's what we're leaning on today i love that word captive the word captive comes from the greek word that means to seize with the sword in ephesians 6 paul calls the word of god the sword of the spirit he says we capture the lies of the enemy and we hold them captive with the truth of god's word and the more that i read god's truth the more i know god's truth the more i know god's truth the more i believe god's truth and the more i believe it the more that i live it because my mind is being renewed my life is being changed i may not be good enough but god is i can't do this but i can do all things through christ i i'm not attractive no but i'm fearfully and wonderfully made i'm overweight no that's just a lot for me to love i'm exhausted no the joy of the lord is my strength i'm always going to be alone nope nope nope the lord will never leave me i can't overcome this addiction nope i can overcome by the blood of the lamb i'm dumb nope the fear of the lord is the beginning of wisdom people won't leave me alone they want all my time who can blame them i'm dope and i do dope stuff and i have some dope stories i have a bad history yeah but my story will turn into his glory i don't have a pedigree but i'm a child of the king so i live like royalty i'm capturing the lies and replacing them with truth and the truth sets me free i'm not going to throw in the towel because i'm about to drop the hammer i'm taking my thoughts captive i will not stay locked into prison when jesus has already opened the door i caught a thought now for some of you your problem or your prison is you have the wrong thoughts about god god doesn't care about me god doesn't love me god has forgotten me god is punishing me no no no no no no that's not true jesus died on the cross to prove god's love to you and he rose again so that anyone and that includes you who calls upon the name of the lord will be saved will be forgiven it will be transformed he doesn't just save you from your sins he fills you with his spirit he renews your mind he gives you the strength to live a life of joy and freedom and that truth sets you free so pay attention to the tension a single thought is the first step towards becoming your own worst enemy i caught a thought [Music] no more of this hold on let me overthink about it i thought about it long enough it's time to take action father we love you and we thank you so much for being so kind and so gracious and i always find it to be somewhat ironic or comedic when i'm studying for a message like this and then i go home and i'm ruminating upon something somebody said or a text that was sent or something that just i find myself meditating upon the things of this world not the things of the word of god and i pray for myself today i got a thought it's gonna be a good one because i can replace lies with the truth and i just pray that the church would join with me thinking good things and true things and virtuous things and praiseworthy things in excellent things but ourselves about you and about others lord i'm not naive enough to think that one message can change everything but it can change something we can start the process of renewing our mind by understanding we need to spend more time in god's word maybe turn off the tv or the news [Music] or maybe turn it to a different station and i know that we've been talking a lot about this this year but it's just every single day i see more and more of what it's doing to our country what it's doing to our churches what it's doing to our families as we can't control our thoughts and they're getting out of hand we pray for repentance lord at the highest level and we pray for relationships to be restored including the ones that we have with ourself lord if there's anyone that never had a relationship with you or started a relationship with you i'm praying that today is that day lord i look at it in the crowd today and i see my that are so dear to me [Music] that i know they're struggling and i just pray for them to have peace and kindness i see my good friend skyler who's about to serve our country [Music] and i'm praying for blessing upon blessing of protection of peace strength and courage to know that the holy spirit is in his corner and fights with him and for him i pray for wisdom good friends fellow soldiers that would strengthen him and for all those that are serving currently would they be in a police force or would they be on the front lines in the military where they serve our government on the highest national level or local level we're praying for wisdom for them strength and courage and realize that righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproof to any people you are a great god and we love you so much it's in jesus precious name that all of god's people said amen amen amen thank you pastor daniel what a challenge today to take every thought captive and say i'm not going to let you devil speak into my life
