[Music] kidnap for marriage yeah kidnap for marriage   like to eat dog yeah maybe you want to see  the dog I will take you to the market she never celebrated her birthday in her life  oh this is your house this is my house wow wow   can you imagine this is baby wearing this necklace  for whole his baby life so this is our guide today   nice to meet you new and she's from the hmong  village now first of all who are these hmong   people so hmong people actually used to live in  a mountains and have very different lifestyle to   us they still wear their own traditional clothing  and living houses that they built for themselves   using raw materials from nature this is our  got new and she's a villager from the black   hmong tribe who is so excited to show us  all about her culture today today I am wearing   this shirt is not the traditional shirt from the other  tribe y yes I see wow it it looks really unique   my my traditional one is like the lady the she  wear that's from my tribe right because sapa area   we have a six different tribe we also have a six  different language so you don't speak vietnames   that much or I yeah I speak Vietnam is vietnamnese the  second language for me oh I see I I don't not   speak so much so how it came came across new was  literally yesterday when we went out for I think   it was for dinner and then we just met her on  the street and then she approached us and talk   about the tour so it was like oh interesting so  we decided go with her I think it's going to be   interesting to see how local people living  and like how the normal life looks like yeah   I guess I'm always very interested in another  country's local culture especially knowing how   Villages live here in Vietnam I think it'll  be a very interesting topic and right now we   actually just passing the city down because once  you get to this start of the tracking point it's   going to be around a 1 km walk from the city  and from there on it's going to start tracking   and apparently because yesterday when I looked at  her map I told her I want to do some non touristy   places and she immediately like you know take  away toury stuff like cat cat valley I know   is a very popular spot so instead today we're  actually going to do a challenging track with   some hidden gems and I actually told her I want  to learn about her culture as well so she said   she'll bring us to her Village on our way to the  mountains we actually had a chat with some really   friendly local villagers who are also from the  hmong tribe who surprisingly speaks quite good   English and it show it's a random guy who just  selling snakes on the street in broad daylight   you might be surprised but in some parts of  Vietnam snakes are either eaten or used in   traditional production of snake wine my guys  keep playing with this snake like a toy yeah literally amazing who eat snake  somebody like vietnam people   they cook together with  chicken egg fry and then eat wow for me local people afraid of snake and also drinking drinking snake I think more people drink rice wine. people drinking rice wine, but like that no I see this I run away too so was  actually just explaining it every day she   actually comes from her Village which supposingly  by walk is around 2 hours but recently 5 years ago   she learnt how to do motorbike so that's why she now  drive to the city every day she would come to   the street and she would try to sell the handmade  products that they made from the village and also   she would try to promote her tours she actually  only learned English not long ago and she just   learned from tourists that's something that is  so impressive then we were talking about food   in sapa and I was just saying like what's your  favourite food is it like buncha it's like the dish   that we had in Hanoi I'm not sure if you've seen  the video If you haven't go check out after this   video but yeah it's a very classic dish here but  then we start talking about the different kinds   of animals that people here actually eat so I know  hmong people they have a very signature dish it's   a horse dish and also apparently people here in  Vietnam they actually eat dogs as well do you want   to try a dog no like to eat dog yeah I like oh  nice maybe you want to see the dog meat I will take   you to the maret me do you want to check it out no  for me dog it's something that it's like like pet   you know animal for home so I cannot ever imagine  how people eating [Music] dog so now we will start   climbing the Dragon Mountain to the  top oh is it that one yes the that one okay so   we're going to go to the top to the top and after  the top we were going down and to the valley and   to the Village to the rice terrace okay yeah sounds  good Yes sounds good sounds good asked what kind   of track is this I already told you it's going  to be challenging about like one and a half hour   to climb even with stop is it's like this like this  really really see no joke straight up I can do   it yes you can do it okay let's go one two three  team let's do need to put one two three [Music]   what is this sound cicada is it  cicada so loud though yeah so loud the frequency is a lot louder than other  cicada in other country yeah I thought it's like   some noise from construction building no even  though the hike up was really challenging but   what made it a lot easier was new sharing her  life story along the way how you doing we're   good we're hiking and talking and she said  about her family she have two children they   now studying in this city in Sapa in high school  16 and 18 years old and she said she never been   outside Vietnam and never ever been outside this  city outside this Village like in Hanoi or ho chi minh   never so she said it's her dream to go to see our  other um cities in Vietnam this is my husband job   my husband works as a security guard in City no in  the in the village govern okay government security   yeah so according to New People's monthly  average salary is around 7 million VND per month and good amount of salary usually for  them is 15 million but it's really really like   good payment job so she said her husband earn  5 million only he work like a security guard   in a village and she earning around 7 million but  it depends of tourists because sometimes tourists   imagine Coronavirus I'm already tired yeah  we just start here so many flies so many bees so   many insects and I asked her about did you have a  dream when you were young she's saying no I didn't   she didn't even have a dream she didn't even study  in a school it just like life is changing she just   get married in know 17 years old and immediately  have a baby now she's 37 years old or 36 and   apparently here in the village uh usual marriage  age is around 17 to 18 years old 20 is considered   old already 30 no one wants you apparently so  people here get married very early that's why they   have kids very early and that's why most of the  money they spend on kids so they don't have time   to money or time to you know do their own thing  what is what is this for this one yeah uh this   this thing right oh they're two piece yeah two  piece this is will be Pants for the woman this   just we just roll around just for protection and also  for tradition oh protect the ankle is   it protect no yeah also for the tradition  okay if we aare women we go outside or if we want to be beautiful we wear a traditional dress we have to  Put this we go outside or okay yeah so whenever you   wear traditional dress you have to wear that we  have to wear that and also we have woman when   we go outside we have to put there if we don't  put there they say we a crazy woman oh so you   have to cover up yourself have to cover up yeah  yeah ah I see because we don't have a long pants   I see you cannot wear a shirt no oh this is the  same because the tradition is not from the Vietnam it is   from my tribe from my tribe tradition no one and  we don't allow to wear very short pants like that   to go outside and also no short t-shirt we cannot  wear in like this wow yeah this is like tradition [Music] so far away you can see someone it's kind  of like raising the flag red flag but apparently   they probably guiding the Buffalo around so the  reason why they have to keep following the Buffalo   is because they are worried that if say like the  Buffalo they mly in eat someone else's con then   they have to pay for other fam's con as well so  they kind of need to follow them around it's a   lot of work that's why it again also explains why  they haven't really got time to you know study   when they were young when they're young they  just you know do the Family household work as well also sometime we go come here to carry the  tree to make to carry the wood to make a fire so we   also carry but the main thing we give to the horse to carry and walk the road like this with the horse  this the road that we've been climbing up is actually the daily  route before uh when she was young when there was   no motorbike so when there was no motorbike  people have to go up and down the mountains   either on horses or they have to carry a basket  full of like these tree branches and leaves and   actually carry back to the Village but now  as technology advances they actually trade   in the horses that they have in the village for  buying a motorbike so the small boys just stand   they were just watching the watching the the  cow or the Buffalo when they don't eat the   con from other people's cornfield if you the watching  the Buffalo the cow so later they go in they   eat so you to pay a lot of money and also they  saying that one like this cow Buffalo it cost   $1,000 which for Village People it's a lot  so they really like take care of this cow like   like a gold [Music] look what we found  here this cow is attacking don't don't come closer where is the owner think  he down there down there huh I   think it's same same the same family the one over there [Music] so my mother has buffalos   for example they have 3 buffalos for working on the farm they also have 3 - 4 horses to carry the thing in the farm and also carry a lot of things from home because no motorbike people always walk on the small path like down there it is not like here also very difficult going down and the buffalos or the horses carry the heavy things for   example if my elder sister follow my parents and work at the farm and for me, I will have to look after the younger baby or or sometimes I look after younger sister or brother I   have to follow the buffalo or the horse for half day so how to say hello in your language as we continue our hike up the hill new shared  a surprising hmong tradition with us sometimes   girls are being kidnapped and taking back to  the Village to become wives while this practice   is rare there are cases where a boy fell in love  with a girl then ask his friend to help kidnpped   her even if she isn't willing to luckily our guide  had a much happier story because she found a love   of her life in a much more conventional way how  how did you meet your husband I met him Sapa town  yes Sapa City how did you meet him like  on street just say hi I was touring and I just said hi or just saying like where do you go today? before we don't have a motorbike, we don't have a phone phone so every sunday so people walk to Sapa and then we just walking   on the way walking to Sapa and so we met each other on the road so today you are going to Sapa also to do shopping something I said yes, are you also going? he said, "Yes." so we just talk first we talk and then the   second time we still keep talking again and  then we meet and then we know we love each other but when we were young we were boyfriend girlfriend we never held hand or touched each other we just walked far from you and me like that that's why people get married very young we are not allowed to be together before marriage that's why people get married very young when they were 17, 16, 18 and we just talked, we knew each other for 1   year we just talked, and we didn't hold hand no touch each other maybe sometimes just like this, but no... but not anything else. No kiss! so now  you still you still love each other yeah love him so much that's so good I married around 22 years ago I think wow this year 22 years already oh it's so romantic yes 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 so according to new each Buffalo  it cost around $1,000 so the smaller ones like   those ones right there could cost a little  bit less but basically if you have a buffalo   in your family it kind of signifies that your  family is sort of wealthy just because it takes   around $1,000 for each Buffalo and also for  having a buffalo actually comes with a lot of   responsibility because you have to follow them  around as well because technically they're your   primary assets so you have to look after  your assets right she was saying if the   Buffalo goes swimming they actually have to  follow them to go swimming too oh my couldn't   this is my first time seeing a buffalo and  they're so close to me right now and it looks   like they're not you know confined in a space or  in a farm they just kind of just roaming around   those people up there just looking after them so I  don't want to do anything that would provoke them   so I'll just chill around here while it eats the  grass 12 Buffalo $12,000 here yes yeah you see now the buffalos are almost down there you see the other people are still coming [Music] [Applause] [Music]   I think the good thing about this tour is  that we kind of have a lot of breaks just   like listening to her stories yeah it's so  interesting because you walk you talk you   listen to stories and I didn't even think  about like that it's hard to go up   here yeah we came from there guys wow this  looks so far [Music] away so we already on   top of the mountain almost and here is like  some pit stop to eat quickly food they they   actually selling some fruit Foods yeah some  coffee if you want to drink coffee on top or   some water how much is Coca-Cola Coca-Cola 20  20 yeah impressive how they carried everything the   super heavy things one woman carrying super  heavy things to on top of the mountain thank you thank you very much you make it you  make it too yeah like this wow make it like   okay I'll pick one for luck and memory for this [Music] so these ones here they are actually  temporary housing for the farmers to   come here to look after the farms you can  see the farmer she just right there she's   cutting the crops the reason why they come  here is because over here there's actually   their Farm territory and you can see a lot  of corn that's growing from the ground here   and after staying here for maybe like a week  or two then they'll go back to the [Music] Village these small house here they said  they built for chickens so at night they   can go in there and sleep well see they  build their own house just from some tree   plastic pocket this is for the sleep  over night oh wow and this is for fire   for cooking wow this how local people  living living it is truly amazing how   he put together this house just by himself  alone you can see they probably like the nails   here and yeah just bits and pieces put  together a temporary house so impressive [Music] this I don't know the  name anything what are you eating what is this tasty you can eat yeah oh  what is this can I try yeah you try the   this one yes maybe the other one this one  it's the your your it's it looks like that   Berry small Berry raspberry that you don't  like raspberry is it yes raspberry raspberry   but this natural yes thank you it's a taste  a bit sour and it's super small tastes good   actually I like it it's a bit sour yeah a  bit sour but but it's tasty it's actually   like raspberry but orange color and so tiny  so cute see you um um M sweet this one's sweet [Music] sweet oh my goodness we came from those  towns right there from there down here I think   and then we walk all the way up where is Fansipan Fansipan there okay fansipan that one we are at half   the half the height I guess yeah so if fansipan is  3,400 something 3,143 then we at half so we around   1,600 above sea level we did it we did it how do  you how do you call again Drone Drone like d Drone [Music]   now we're actually heading to the first hmong Village  amongst the all the village that we go to and as   you can see the woman just there sitting on  the steple there so those are already hmong   people you can see the traditional clothing it's  very unique many years ago they use horses to   transport all these like bamboo all the products  and everything but as technology advances now they   use motorbike which is a lot faster so down the  hill all those houses hmong people's houses you   can literally see how they're built with wood  with bricks by bricks and the best part about   this place has to be the view of the rise terrace  it's just so stunning when you look down from   here and I think I think is also the greenery  nature and that's why um I think from what I   heard hmong people they actually live you know  around 85 80 so yeah they do live a long life I   would say perhaps because of the nature and  the greenery the fresh air and everything   as well how are you my legs shaking see because it's harder to go down than go up   yeah for you it's hard yeah look are you you  lost are you lost this side yeah this side oh welcome to bamboo forest [Music] this is the baby bamboo you see they  just come from the ground mhm and the one we   eat is similar to that one so just this  high or maybe a lower so we so we might grab like this o now I don't have a knife now I don't have a knife, usually we use knife to cut here and then we open oh so many layers yeah so many like this  we have to pick from this or for example go inside the forest different bamboo than this because this one tastes bitter little bit bitter so people don't like to eat this but the one we eat is similar to this one the bamboo but just different kind we cook, after that we chop into small pieces and then   for example we boil in hot water after when water becomes hot boiled for 1 hr and then you just take it like that and eat not salt no anything just a little bit of chili   and then just eat with chilly and eat it this one bamboo is  dry that's why she take it out is so easily and   they usually use it for fire and this one it's  more fresh that's why sometimes they use it for   food this is a baby bamboo yeah this for food and  it smells like banana skin a pineapple Apple   it's actually very appetizing I can see how why  like you know the local people eat this [Music]   we decide to take a little break and get some  dessert it's spiky this one yes yeah replenishment   but I got some also they said that for example  she never celebrate her birthday in her life never   and her parents also too but now I think like  new generation they actually do because they're   watching some movie they're watching some TV  show they see other world celebrate birthday   and they're like oh we want to and also she said  I think even her parents didn't know her exact   date of birth but rather only knows the year  of birth so you can see like how insignificant   their birthday is in the tradition I think Vietnamnese people in the city they celebrate birthday before already  yeah it's only her culture this Village this   area they're not celebrating but other Vietnam  people they usually celebrate o it got trapped I think thank you don't fall down again open open  going inside she never knows how to open and go inside yeah yeah we save   a chicken life that's me at home just randomly  fall down from the sofa today save chicken life   tomorrow eat so this right there the t-shirt and  the pans they actually act as scarecrow to scare   away the birds because when they spread the seeds  then the birds will start coming to eat so they   need something to scare them away we are almost  at her Village there so that's her Village it's   at the foot of the mountain and you can see the  rooftop they're all in the same color as well so   I'm super excited to see how the house looks  like inside usually in the marriage the woman   after marriage she has to go to her husband's  place to live with the family but then because   her family I think a lot of people got married  and the house got really busy so that's why her   husband actually builds a house separately so me  I prefer going down it's more tiring to go down maybe you can try to run like this now this  is the peaceful Village Life that we   were expecting all the way to hell hello new John John doggy what so oh my goodness cute you  what's happened so cute look at this a oh   I'm first time holding this so so cute I don't  know is it chicken yes I think is it chicken yes   chicken oh it's a chicken baby chicken I don't  know why he's alone oh mama is there I bring to Mama go to Mama go to Mama he doesn't even want to leave oh so cute I'm first time  like taking baby chicken it's [Music] so so it means hello in local language  that's why we're saying everyone and to   say hello how are you you say so cute  [Music] language oh this is your house   this is my house wow so pretty and  this is my niece and my nephew hello hello hello wow wow oh he's much cooler when we first built the house, it was smaller not  like this one we built a very small (house) using bamboo the bamboo house was small one when   when we got older, we changed and then we built this house 15 years ago this house how long did it take to build this  house uh alone, my husband friends, family, neighbour we help each other to prepare the wood how do you   call this timber timber yeah so to prepare thatto carry them from the forest so they have to prepare that one year before and then after one year we will start building I think if we have money or more money to build I think we could have finished building in one year    but because we didn't have enough money  so we had to build one day at a time so it took a long time, 3 years I think so all these are from   like you know local surroundings like the wood  the everything but these we have to carry the men will have to carry from the forest it is very  far away they go in the morning to the forest to carry back to home I think will be half day in the morning about like 5AM - 6AM wake up...and then 10 - 15 men go to the forestthey carry their food for lunch on the way and they will bring back (raw materials) home at around 5pm this here is the living   room for example we will eat dinner and breakfast here or when someone comes to visit our family  we will always sit on the chair and then put down the table and this is just like a living room yes this is your daughter  yes this is my daughter when she was young I think   she around 4 years old and this is our table for eat dinner or breakfast this we have to put it here and we Leave everything here to eat   dinner or breakfast why did you put it up uh for more space  yeah and more space exactly yes makes sense this   is for living room for sleeping and this is all  my clothes wow do you have lights inside here yeah   I think the light is already this oh just inside  the clothes already o yes mhm so you're sleeping here   with your husband yeah we're sleeping here with my  husband so in summer it will be a little bit hot   inside would it yeah it be hot very because  I don't see a fan inside uh we have a small   Fan in there okay yeah because my house is small, no space for big room so   small room is very hot are there mosquitoes  inside usually yeah mosquito inside but we   have a something mosquito net mosquito  net okay yeah yeah and from here is the kitchen this is for our kitchen oh yeah we so  you're making fire here yes we make fire  in here it's a for example when we have a ... we cook for big MEK and we cook a big meal with the fire for a lot of people or or sometimes just me and my husband we cook with gas and the gas stove we changed around 5 years ago so  before we always cooked with the fire yeah got   huh and now you've got gas stove as well yes, we use gas sometimes for eating hotpot ah okay   this is for hotpot yes this is for washing or clean something yes very   different yeah yeah so different at sometimes when there is a wedding or ceremony for new baby so then we have to cook the rice with this pot yeah we cook this we have to cook the rice in there and then we have another big pot this one then we put this inside and cook with the fire that's a lot of rice  for big family yeah a lot of rice for big family around 20 people it's a big  pot for celebration is it yeah this room is for my uh for my son and my daughter they are not at home so I pull out the stuff inside already this another room is for my daughter but she not at home so we don't do anything here these are her new clothes this is mosquito net yeah  mosquito net there a lot of mosquito yes yeah and   you have a second floor second floor is for leaving stuff (storage) we put the rice and corn upstairs so every  day you have to climb up to get the rice and no we   have a step to going up okay yeah yeah yeah yeah  this is so interesting yeah very different to how you live right? what material is the roof I  don't know I so it's not the from Forest right no   this is we bought from the from the city yes so  you feel cold in the winter yeah we feel cold that's why we prepare a lot of wood  to make a  fire when the winter winter here in here when you   sleep no uh we might in the kitchen and the when  we went to cooking so we put the fire in there   so we sit around the fire and when we go to sleep  we just put the blanket on summer is very hot   my winter also very cold too I have another 3 rooms outside there and sometimes when customers do trekking they would like  to visit or they would like to stay like local   home stay m I will take them to my homestay, they sleep in the other rooms there wow can you imagine this   baby wearing this necklace for whole his baby  life because it's they believe that it's this is   protection for them and he even go to shower  and sleep with this necklace and they had to   make their necklace this color like three color  like gold silver and gold and how do you threee   color bronze bronze yeah so so put one and put the necklace also wow for example I also have a necklace just to look beautiful I also have two necklaces when I wear traditional clothes mine is only for beauty not for protection only the small boys they have 1 like this for protection or she has one like that for protection and also he has two other necklaces    for special meanings so this one right  here is the toilet and this is the shower this is   the shower space you know when I was young my generation how we shower? bucket no it's bucket or   cold water cold water outside of with the bucket  we don't have a shower yet my when like um also   the government teach us how to build bathroom and toilet so so first we started building the toilet the one with the hole (squat toilet) with the one where you do like that so we only building it in my house before but now we changed to another one like you saw  one like that yeah also the shower is new shower, before we didn't have these built around 6 years ago oh my goodness I can't it's really heavy  no, if it is heavy you need to do like this  hold it like this like wow wow  too much heavy and then putting here also carry it be careful you they broke Cannot stronger are you sure yeah yeah yeah you did it  you did it can you do it for 30 minutes minute   and walk walk walk like the beginning when we  walk crazy I think I could carry this from here   to there maximum that's it your husband should  be so strong yeah he much stronger than me do   you have photo of your husband yes later we  was see my husband I think oh really yes oh   good I think he's super strong man no he I think  short much shorter than him oh really maybe his   maybe his size but much shorter bigger same size much shorter  wow shorter maybe you size short you size [Music] thank you so much for showing your house you're  welcome it's really interesting to know about   your culture and seeing you like you know this  house that you built yourself [Music] it's bye   nice meeting you thank you so much thank you  so much it was so nice
