waiters / waitresses of ridet what's the most terrible date you have waited on / witnessed while a college student I waited tables at an upscale Italian place in Washington DC one Friday night I waited on a couple they were about the same age as me on their first date it turned out he didn't have enough money to pay the tab so she leaves through the front door hoping to meet him outside he goes into the men's room in the back of the restaurant where he almost gets stuck trying to crawl out the small window he split his suit pants right down the middle he had to do the walk of shame back into the restaurant and beg for mercy which we gave him the hangdog look on his face when he fessed up was priceless years later I was working at a publishing company and I told this story to some cow walkers and a woman in the group said that was me that was me turns out that she and the guy ended up getting married go figure well when the dumb bus can't pay and she digs him anyway that's a more I have to and they are both awful for different reasons sorry for the wall of text but they are very relevant one night I had a table with the most awful couple ever as soon as they came in I knew I was ducked they sit down at the table and immediately start bickering when I walked over to take drink orders this was the conversation hi can I get you guys started with a drink yeah honey why doesn't she get you a ducking drink don't want to get the shakes hey why don't you just shut the [ __ ] up you stupid bee this went on most of the night any time I came by to bring food refill waters or clear the table they would just be sniping at each other just the worst most vicious language I honestly don't understand how people who treat each other like that can stay together they ended up leaving me a maybe 5% tip the second one is so awful and honestly is worse a man and a woman came into the restaurant and they seemed very nice and friendly towards each other the woman had Down's syndrome and the man who was doting on her in an obviously romantic way did not have Down syndrome they sit down and start eating they seem to be having really great time and are enjoying their meal the restaurant started to get really busy so I had less time to spend monitoring their table that I kept my eye on them I noticed the guy wasn't at his seat at one point that I figured he was just in the bathroom when I looked back a bit later he still wasn't at his seat I thought this was strange so I went over and asked the woman how everything was going and to try and gauge where her date went she was still happy and explained that he had to run and make a phone call I looked back again later and she was still waiting but it became increasingly obvious that he had dined and ditched her I went over to chat with her a bit and she seemed anxious because he still hadn't returned I started asking her a bit more about him and it turns out that she had met him that day at the coffee shop where she worked having to explain to her that he probably wasn't coming back was one of the most heartbreaking things I've had to do he had disappeared for an hour at this point eventually she explained that she didn't have enough money to cover the bill but we of course told her that she didn't have to pay she also didn't know how to get home as he was supposed to give her a ride she had her Guardians phone number so he called her to come pick her up the Guardian was very upset and tried her best to console the guest her guardian ended up insisting on paying us for some of the bill and taking her home so brutal I waited tables for a short time about five years ago during that time I only remember seeing one date go absolutely terribly they were both obviously upset before they arrived very polite to me but didn't say anything to each other when I came to the table it escalated the whole restaurant could hear them fighting then finally she says something like fine go have fun with your [ __ ] and she gets up and storms off he stayed paid for the food she already ordered and had it put in a to-go box and had three or four beers the whole time he just stared out the window playing with his wedding ring which he had taken off not a date but I once worked at an Italian restaurant that was popular in the area for local business people on their lunch brakes one day a man eating alone saw a woman he liked also eating alone he asked me to ask her if it had be alright if he joined her she said yes all seemed to be going well because when I brought them their checks separate of course don't want to make any assumptions he had her card with her phone number in front of him he watched her pay her bill she tipped generously and he handed me just enough cash to cover his bill saying to her looks like you covered the tip he [ __ ] smiled at her while he said this like he was being clever she reached across the table grabbed her card and excused herself while he just sat there dumbfounded once had a guy on Valentine's Day come in with his date I asked how long they were together she said two years it was their anniversary she seemed very excited but the guy was very blah they were eating their dinners when I came by to check on them the guy was complaining about everything the entire time that I gave him excellent service the whole time the girl seemed very uncomfortable most of the time she was very polite to me however but she was very comforting to the guy she was rubbing his neck and kissing his cheek but he seemed uninterested sometime in between dinner and desert the guy got up and went to the bathroom the girl sat there for two hours crying hysterically for the last half an hour after trying repeatedly to try to calm her down I paid for some of her tab and sat down and listened to her vent before offering to get her a cab she kept saying that she hated when he did stuff like this implying he had done it before I told her she should probably move on she looked offended and said no you don't know what you're talking about he will come back for me he's just mad because he doesn't like spending money she got up and went outside to wait on a bench in front of a restaurant she waited there for an additional two hours he never came that was some cold I'm not sure if they were getting married or just dating that I was waiting on a table gosh years ago and I walked over and they were having a pretty intense whisper fight I got their drink orders then walk away when I came back they were sitting in stony silence well I did my job got their orders and then went to work on other tables the next thing I know the woman is standing up practically yelling at at the guy and I have to paraphrase cause I can't remember exactly what was said but along the lines you're the most worthless piece of [ __ ] and your mom is a [ __ ] it's off she dumped her drink on him then strode over to me I thought I was about to get yelled at too but she yanked open her purse and fished out a five and said sorry for the mess I was a dishwasher that I feel like I need to tell this I was having a job interview at a local guitar shop when a guy walks in he picks up a guitar and tries to walk out well I told my boss that he was leaving with a guitar I ended up with the job my boss and I walk out and talk to him he says the church will pay for it my boss said that if the church wanted it they could come buy it themselves he leaves I finished my interview cutter later that day I'm at my other job washing dishes when I look out onto the restaurant floor and that same guy from earlier is out there he is feasting he ordered two double bacon cheeseburgers chicken strips fries pie and milk he eats it all I tell my boss about what happened earlier with the guy and he tells me to wait and see what happens well turns out the guy told the waitress the church will pay for it and my boss goes out there and talks to him he says the church down the road was going to pay well my boss calls the cops let me stop right here and say my boss gave burgers and stuff out to homeless all the time but the guy didn't just order a sandwich he gorged himself and since he tried to run off with a guitar at the other place my boss at the time wanted to make sure he didn't try this with any other local businesses the police come and they talk he gets mad and flips a table spilling dishes they cuff him and take him outside to talk they let him walk down to the church to get the pastor well 10 minutes later they get a call saying someone is exposing themselves at the church my boss said they got down there and he was everywhere all over the parking lot and cars the police had to put protective gear on before arresting him it was ducked funniest I'm serving a couple big black dude small white woman and everything seems good there are little tents on one of my walk design notice the woman has begun crying I'm hovering awkwardly torn between actually serving my table and giving them space the situation is deteriorating she's getting more and more hysterical whisper shouting at 100 miles a minute and gesticulating wildly her dude though is completely calm he sits there quietly looking totally unperturbed until she stands up and storms out of the restaurant hesitant I approach I ask if he needs either of the half-eaten meals wrapped up he says no I'm good and proceeds to finish his meal then pulls his latest plate towards him and begins eating her pasta eventually she returns embarrassed and they leave together best older couple having a relatively quiet disagreement I don't want to interrupt them but they haven't ordered anything yet and I'm afraid of neglecting my table I go over and introduce myself and the gentleman says I'm just having a minor fight with my wife if you wouldn't mind giving us some time I'll flag you when we are ready and he did and they had a nice meal and I was so relieved that the customer told me what to do so I didn't have to worry about intruding while trying to do my job
