Vampires From The Strain | TV Series

hello everyone and welcome back to another video  this has to be one of the most requested videos   I've had on the channel and we're finally here  today we're looking at the strigoi from the tv   series The Strain the strain is a vampire horror  series that came out in 2014 and has four seasons   it was created by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck  Hogan based on their novel trilogy of the same   name the show follows f from Goodweather with the  help of a lot of friends he meets along the way he   tries to stop the master a rogue vampire elder  that is trying to take the world for his own   the character charlotte is played by Rhona  Mitra who portrays Sonja in underworld rise   of the likens which is probably one of my favorite  underworld movies and Mia Maestro who plays Nora   Martinez also plays the vegetarian vampire carmen  in twilight kinda unrelated but David Bradley who   plays Abraham Setrakian also plays Argus Filch  in the harry potter movies i watched the whole   first season thinking this guy is so familiar  but i couldn't remember where he was from   the origin of the strigoi in the show is never  explained beyond the ancients but in the book   it tells the story from the very beginning and  since the show was made by the same people that   created the book there's a good chance that it  is still canon but it's never been confirmed   vampires or the strigoi have a very interesting  origin story the progenitor for all vampires is   actually the archangel Ozryel based on the  angel of death azrael from islam and judaism   Ozrael was born in heaven and is trillions of  years old and asexual meaning no gender Ozryel was   one of three archangels that god sent to earth to  destroy sodom and gomorrah two legendary biblical   cities destroyed by god for their wickedness  and sin before beginning their destruction they   briefly stayed with a family in the city to better  understand the layout before attacking while   being sheltered and washed by the family Ozryel  becomes fascinated with their blood it carries   life through their body and in turn a little piece  of god's divine power Ozryel went to the city of   sodom disguised as a human while walking a woman  working at a brothel called him over he attacked   her by biting her neck and drinking her blood  after the cities were destroyed still so overcome   with a thirst for blood Ozryel attacked his  brother michael drinking his silvery angelic blood   just as he did to humans for this god punishes  Ozryel he orders the other archangels to impale   Ozryel to the ground with a divine beam of light  then cut the body into seven pieces and scatter it   across the earth over time each one of the seven  pieces of Ozryel seep deep into the dirt where   they lay and through these seven pieces is how  the seven ancients of the vampire race came to be   the seven ancients created from Ozryel rule over  all strigoi every stigoi in the world can be   traced back to one of the seven ancients although  nearly every strigoi scene in the show is from the   master aside from a select few the master was  the seventh and final ancient that came to be   and is considered the youngest of them and by  youngest they mean he's only around three thousand   years old each ancient came from a piece of the  angel and it is said that the master came from   Ozryel's throat which is why he represents the  angels thirst for blood and relentless ambition   more than any other ancient all seven collectively  refer to themselves as Sareil which is another   name that they have given to Ozryel it is said  that no ancient has a true name of their own   the master refers to himself as such but that  is just a title he calls himself the ancients   are made up of the white and the worms this is how  they spread their influence throughout the world   each new person taken over by the worms becomes  one of a hive mind the master was able to infect   people and then know everything they knew and have  control over them in the tv series the ancients   have a special crimson worm to distinguish them  from a regular strigoi the substance of the worms   and the white that inhabits the ancients is more  of a sentient being that can possess any host the   master remains himself even after he has to move  to a new host this makes the ancients very hard   to kill as he must ensure the entire body is  destroyed the site where the master originated   was in America but he traveled to what they call  the old world to unite with the other ancients   eventually he went rogue from the other ancients  wishing to take over the world for himself causing   a vampire war between him and the other six  ancients the master wants to spread the strigoi   everywhere and doesn't care who he infects but  the other ancients kill their victims immediately   after feeding because they see immortality  as a great gift not to be given haphazardly   they must be a perfect candidate to receive  immortality and be able to help their needs   and have a lot to offer the telepathic bond that  the ancients share can be blocked but can never   be broken their minds were meant to exist as one  for all time until the master went rogue when all   the ancients eventually come to pass their minds  were reunited as one and welcomed back into heaven i want to talk a bit about the Occido Lumen  the Occido Lumen is a medieval manuscript that   contains the complete account of the first rise  of strigoi the lumen has 489 silver edged pages   20 illuminated color pages and it is bound  in leather but the cover and spine are pure   silver as to keep out strigoi the book has to be  decrypted with natural sunlight and it contains   a hidden text under the visible writings  the lumen is a translation of a collection   of mesopotamian clay tablets discovered  in a cave in the zargos mountains in 1508   it would be 300 years before scholars became  capable of translating the ancient sumerian   upon completion of the lumen louis xiv  declared the man a heretic and imprisoned him   and ordered the book and the original tablets  be destroyed but the book managed to survive   thanks to some occult enthusiasts many scholars  believe the book to be a hoax but Setrakian who   is an accomplished scholar of eastern european  literature and folklore knows it's genuine   why else would the ancients and the master  fear it the ancients and the master want the   book either protected or destroyed so that no  one will know the secrets on how to kill them   that's why the ancients were allowing Setrakian  to use the lumen in order to find out how to kill   the master but once he found out how to kill the  master they wanted the book back immediately and   for him not to read into anything else in the  book the lumen is successfully translated in   the novel by Setrakian ephraim fett and quinlan  they learn that the master's point of origin   also called the black site was one of the thousand  islands in lake ontario eff destroys the master   and his strain by detonating a nuclear weapon  at the site once the strigoi were destroyed   fett went on to publish satrakian's work and  their translation of the lumen for the world around 40 a.d during the reign of roman emperor  julius caesar the master only a few centuries old   at the time served as the emperor's chief advisor  using the name thrax in exchange for his council   thrax was provided with women to feed on the  master insisted that all the women be virgins   but a pregnant woman mistakenly made it into the  group to be fed on the master could sense she was   pregnant as soon as he stung her but during his  surprise she managed to fight him off and narrowly   escape the master was furious and said she must be  hunted down and killed but the assassins could not   find her before she gave birth to her son quinlan  and because of his unique circumstances quinlan   is not a regular strigoi they refer to him as the  born he is a damper or half vampire so a strigoi   biting a pregnant woman can create a born or  possibly only an ancient could do this half   vampires or borns are not burned by sunlight and  they don't have blood worms like all other strigoi   quinlan also shares a telepathic link with his  father the master able to communicate and sense   where each other are but he cannot be controlled  by his father like other strigoi descended from   his strain the master can control all strigoi  infected by his strain or his worms but could not   control a strigoi infected by another ancient and  possibly because quinlan has no blood worms this   might be why he can't be controlled the ancients  wanted quinlan's help against the master but he   wanted nothing to do with their war but when the  master showed up and killed his human wife and   adopted daughter he spent the remainder of his  life searching for the master quinlan possesses   strength and speed much greater than that of  a regular strigoi but was still weaker than   an ancient he works with the other ancients to try  and bring down his father quinlan is the bodyguard   to the ancients and their hunter in the books he  reveres the ancients and treats them with great   respect but in the show he treats them as more of  an equal and even with contempt at times willing   to call out their mistakes and makes his opinions  known while talking to the other six ancients   quinlan states that he is the only born left so  at one time there was possibly many born strigoi   another name for them is day walkers and they were  used for a special job called the sun hunter which   was a strigoi that did his hunting during the  day in the show it has changed from a single day   walker to a small group of strigoi that included  day walkers and humans although the strigoi have   a supernatural origin being descended from the  archangel osriel the condition itself behaves   and spreads more like a parasite once a body  is taken over the virus is in complete control   it's basically a new creature living in the  shell of a human in some unique cases like   i-course he seems to retain more of his human  personality still speaking in german sometimes   and still keeping his memories some strigoi like  eichorst use makeup and prosthetics to look human   and blend in which comes in handy because i  course does a lot of business dealings for the master the vampires or strigoi are turned by  coming into contact with the strained worms   they are extremely thin capillary worms and if  just one makes onto your skin they can quickly   get into your bloodstream once one is in your  bloodstream it's already too late sean aston's   character gets a small scratch on his face from  one of the strigoi stingers but when ephraim uses   a uv light they can see a worm got in they cut  the worm out and everything seems to be fine but a   short while later they lift his shirt and can see  he's totally infected so basically no matter how   fast you get the worm out it doesn't matter they  find out in the show that if you use a uv light   you can see the worms under the skin and see who  has been infected they must reproduce very fast   as the man only had a worm on him for less than  a minute the worms can crawl from a dead body of   a strigoi and infect someone or the worms can also  be injected through their stinger they use to feed   the vampire slayer abraham Setrakian found  a very old paper written by an alchemist on   how to extract a life-extending component of  the worms and use it without becoming infected   he uses this substance he calls the white in  order to continue living and fight the strigoi   it's also seen bringing another character back  who was on his death bed about to die and after   receiving the white was able to walk around and  seemed perfectly healthy again the strigoi have   a similar mouth to the reapers from blade too  instead of two large fangs the strigoi virus   manipulates the host's genes to physically change  their body using existing organs and tissue the   virus makes a new digestive system and the stinger  that can shoot out from the mouth up to six feet   to feed or infect when the stinger comes out of  their mouth it kind of reminds me of wesker from   the one resident evil movie maybe he was a strigoi  because the stinger is made up of the original   host's lungs and throat does strigoi are only able  to grunt or use extremely simple words like mom   dad help etc you won't hear a strigoi say  supercalifragilisticexpialidocious although   eichorst has been a strigoi for around 50 years  and he can still speak perfectly fine as well as   not having many of the other physical features of  other strigoi so his transformation is a unique   one after someone becomes infected with the strain  the virus begins to shed human traits that will no   longer be needed by the strigoi fingernails and  hair fall out and in the book they lose their   nose and ears so a vampire appears smooth and  featureless but in the show they keep their nose   and ears because the strigoi reproduce through  their stinger the human genitalia also atrophy   or fall off so a mature strigoi resembles the  archangel Ozryel and that it has no discernible   gender the skin becomes extremely pale sometimes  appearing reddish after a large feeding though   a vampire's eyes have a black pupil with red  around it they also develop sharp teeth instead   of the original teeth even though the stinger is  what they use to attack and feed the middle finger   on each hand also grows longer and stronger and  develops an extra strong talon that grows where   the fingernail used to be the other fingers also  grow smaller claws or talons most vampires from   other shows and films have a very cold body  temperature because they are usually dead   or undead however in the strain the vampires  actually have an extremely high body temperature   human's average body temperature is around 37  degrees celsius or 98 degrees fahrenheit but if   strigoi's body temperature is around 49 degrees  celsius or 120 degrees fahrenheit hot enough   for humans to feel the body heat while standing  several feet away if a human's body temperature   reaches 104 fahrenheit that's life-threatening and  needs immediate treatment so 120 is pretty extreme   the digestive and circulatory system of a vampire  are fused into one the organs take the form of a   bunch of sacs rather than what you would expect  to see in a human so again similar to the vampires   of blade 2 the reapers the virus changes  their organs to make the body more efficient   nutrition from feeding is moved around the body  by a thick white liquid that acts as their blood   also referred to as The White the worms are in the  white and often visible through the vampire's skin   the white is what contains the healing properties  that allow them to heal and have immortality as   long as a stroke is not killed by physical damage  the parasite will keep their body alive forever   the white can be fed to humans and will give  them extended life and can heal but you must   be sure not to ingest any of the worms that is why  subtraction is very careful when making the white   although the master is able to cut the tip of his  own finger and give the white whenever he wants   probably because he has control over the parasites  the ancients are also immortal but have the   ability to transfer their consciousness into a  new body if it becomes too damaged the master   has possessed many different bodies through his  life vampires in the strain are like rodents in   the sense that their digestive system only works  one way which means they are unable to vomit   which leads some of the main casts to poison the  strigoi with blood thinners and because they can't   vomit they die but some strigoi such as the master  are seen being able to regurgitate the worms so   the ancients might have a slightly different  anatomy than a regular strigoi vampires excrete   waste in the form of a pungent ammonia-based  spray gross a vampire will purge itself while   feeding getting rid of old food to make room for  the new food strigoi do not sleep well at least   not how a human does they will shut down for  a short while if they are tired and consuming   too much blood can make them tired as well but not  for long how long does it take to become a strigoi   most of the physical changes after being infected  by a strain worm are slow to manifest not like   other vampire viruses that can sometimes change in  a matter of minutes when a human is infected after   a short while or sometimes right away they go into  a state of suspended animation for a day while the   virus begins to change their body people infected  not by being stung but instead maybe by a single   worm can take a little longer for the initial  change to begin the stinger is the first attribute   to manifest as to allow the new vampire to feed  other physical traits such as hair loss the large   middle finger and talon and lack of human organs  will happen within the first seven days of being   infected something else that happens within the  first week is your eyes will begin to change   vision is the least acute of the strigoi senses  color vision will start to degrade and is replaced   with something similar to a thermal vision in  the book strigoi lose their external ears but   their hearing is very enhanced able to hear blood  pulsing through someone's body also a fully turned   strigoi can smell the carbon dioxide exhaled by  humans in order to track them down a strigoi will   be confused and clumsy while the transformation  is still completing but once it is mature and the   body has changed they become supremely agile able  to climb sheer surfaces with their claws and jump   great distances full maturity of a strigoi will  occur within the first 30 days of being infected   for some reason newly turned strigoi have a  compulsion to infect their family members and   people they love the most this is possibly an  instinct of the virus to infect people you love   first because they might be the easiest  and first targets to locate and feed on   the strigoi's greatest strength is their hive mind  connection with the ancient that infected them   through some kind of telepathic link all strigoi  can send and receive thoughts and information to   the ancient this is how the master can control  the mass numbers of strigoi and find people   whenever he needs to in the book despite strigoi  not being able to speak because of their stinger   they can still communicate with humans through  telepathy some vampires in order to hide amongst   humans can speak telepathically and move their  lips appropriately to make you think they are   actually speaking but in the television series  they can speak aloud so the ability is not needed   probably to make things easier on themselves  while filming strigoi must consume blood to live   the preferred blood among them is b-positive  during the show the strigoi start gathering   people with b-positive blood and send them to what  is basically slaughterhouses though b-positive is   by far their favorite any blood will do the  ancients are shown having superhuman strength   speed and a multitude of mental abilities the  master was able to make himself appear as zack's   mother like an illusion and each ancient has the  ability to see through the eyes of any strigoi   infected with their strain when they are looking  or communicating through one of their lesser   strigoi the eyes glow red the ancient can also  use their telepathic abilities as a weapon known   as a murmur this ability is like a mental shock  wave able to render nearby humans unconscious   ancients are by far the strongest of the  strigoi quinlan exhibits lesser strength   but still stronger than any regular strigoi and  he can move so fast it resembles a blur regular   strigoi seem to have slightly greater strength  than a human but nothing extraordinary most are   only seen moving at a regular pace but there are  some exceptions eichhorst is able to move as fast   as quinlan and dodge bullets like an agent from  the matrix even though he's just a regular strigoi   eichorst has some very unique abilities but he is  still only a human infected just like anyone else   another strigoi that can move extremely fast  are the feelers they have unique abilities   sight and perception beyond the visible spectrum  these are people that were blind and then turned   into strigoi and for some reason can move  much faster than most other strigoi able to   dodge bullets like eichorst strigoi can take much  more punishment than a human without being hurt   they also have very fast healing abilities being  able to easily heal from multiple gunshot wounds   however they cannot regenerate lost limbs a  strigoi is forced to cut his hand off to escape   and it never grows back maybe he could sew a new  one on like quinn from blade even though strigoi   have good healing abilities they could be killed  by a broken neck or severe trauma to the brain   and once the strigoi is dead it cannot be brought  back to life with blood or anything it's dead for   good most traditional vampire weaknesses work on  strigoi aside from holy water crosses and garlic   it is said that some of the weaknesses strigoi  have today come from the way Ozryel was punished   by god sunlight is the closest thing to god's face  on earth which is why it burns vampires silver is   the color of angelic blood the same blood Ozryel  tried to drink from michael lastly Ozryel was   pinned to the ground with a beam of divine light  between the two rivers that came from sodom   and amora which is why his vampiric descendants  can't cross running water the show seems to take   a slightly more biological explanation but the  virus could still be rooted in the story of Ozryel   and have biological explanations as well sunlight  burns vampires because the ultraviolet rays have   the ability to destroy the part of the DNA that  allows them to heal properly this happens because   of the germicidal properties in ultraviolet light  that can break down the virus-ridden tissue of   the strigoi similarly silver burns the vampires  due to the material's disinfectant properties   damaging the vampire's viral biology a difference  between the books and the show is that in the book   when the master is killed all strigoi he infected  also die but in the show the remaining strigoi   became non-intelligent feral creatures that wander  aimlessly so they still all had to be hunted down   and killed well that's my video on the strigoi  from the strain there's a lot to cover in the show   compared to some others out there but I'm glad i  finally got to cover my favorite vampire tv series   the practical effects and special effects are so  good in the show probably thanks to Guillermo Del   Toro I found an interview where someone asked him  what was the hardest part about taking his idea   and bringing it to the screen and this is what  he said the way i wanted to design the show   all the episodes you see every effect goes to me  every single makeup effect goes through me all   the episodes i do the final color correction  on cinematography of every episode myself   it's because i want to give a uniformity to the  look and he goes on to talk about the colors he   used and the cinematic look he wanted to  achieve with the budget they were given   you can tell he really cared about his idea  and wanted to come across a certain way because   the books were already completed when the show  started they had a very clear direction to follow   which is why i like the later seasons just as  much as the first i think the strain is one of   the best examples of a tv show that just feels  like a very long movie because they had a very   clear plot and story they were following with  an end he didn't want the show to go on forever   he wanted it to end when
