hi this is russell thunder from teacher 20 videos calm today we're gonna look at model we're gonna look at how we can use that model for delivering online courses and more gonna be really powerful in terms of the delivery of online courses i have a huge background in in working in online teaching and delivery of courses i worked at the university of westminster for about nine years I was at the University of Warwick I was involved in futurelearn I've built quite a few courses I've even managed to win a few prizes a couple of quite big ones as well for my work in this area so I really hope that what I'm going to show you is gonna be useful if it is please like the video please share the video with other teachers please any comments or questions leave them below and of course if you really like what I'm doing then follow my youtube channel I'm gonna do my best to make this super clear let's get started now a lot of people have been asking me Russell can ed model place the delivery of a classroom so in other words if I need to teach online rather than actually be in person teaching can it model do the job and the truth is really ed model is part of the job we normally think about teaching online as having two components one is the live delivery the live teaching actually seen the teacher online and perhaps them explaining things and we often use a webinar tour what we call a virtual classroom for example like zoom or click meeting could even use Skype so that's for the kind of live session with IQ Adobe Connect there's lots of these tools around for delivering the online part with live and then you've got the stuff that the constituents gonna do kind of activities and discussions and collaborating and working together and that's often done in what we call a virtual learning environment and that's where it model fits in because that model is a virtual learning environment it doesn't really do the live pie does the other part where the students are going on and collaborating and doing activities together but not necessarily the part where the teeth is actually teaching now that is a very simplified example of the way that online delivery works and my course is more sophisticated than that but they do actually have those two fundamental parts and all the courses that I work on do have those fundamental parts are live delivery and then an environment where the students can access content so ad model just that second part really well and I'm going to show you that now but then I'm also going to show you a way that a model could play a role in that first part that lie delivery how could you overcome the problem of needing to teach as we might look at it so let me try to give you a quick tour event model and suggest a few ways that we could actually try to make it model almost cover the whole range of things that we want to do as a teacher okay so I'm logged in to my Edmodo account and you can see here all the classes and groups I've got we normally talk about groups in terms of doing teacher training and classes in terms of actually teaching so we can create an account in that model and then create a class which is really easy we literally just click on here and then just go create a class we've put in a few bits of information and then click on create and that creates a code we give that code to our students and then they can log into our class and then anything that we share in that class the students in that class will be able to access it and that's a really nice thing in terms of organizing all your classes and say write I've created a class for group 1 and class for group 2 in a class for group 3 and each group will have a different code and they will just log into that particular class and then what you've got to do is start to put all the content on now the way that ed model works is very much like Facebook in terms of the wall so you've got this kind of discussion wall at the front I'm going to show you in a minute and then you can also do lots of other things with it model to make sure that the students can get engaged so let's just have a quick look at that sorry if I was to come down to one of my groups perhaps let's just clip here click here I've got all my groups here I'm just gonna choose one of them will work with this one here so we're into this group here which is a group I ran last year no actually this wasn't completely online this had a kind of face to face component as well but a lot of it was online a lot of the content was online and what we can see here is that we've got this kind of wall and we can click here and we can write anything we want to the students and then we can add files that we want them to access PowerPoint or video etc or we can grab something from our library if we save something in our word model library or we can share links we can literally just put the link in we can just add the link so we might for example what is right something like watch this video so we could just literally put that as the instructions and then just add the link to the video click on post and the students in that group would have access to that video so you can see immediately you can share a lot of content it could be video from from YouTube or from TeacherTube or from Vimeo or from from anywhere else or it doesn't just have to be video of course it could be for example it going to share you know a PDF file or a word file or a PowerPoint presentation so straight away you've got this really quick way of communicating with your students and sharing content that you want them to access through read model now another great thing that you can do in its bhalo is that you can create folders where all the content is in for example on this course if I click on folders here you'll see that I've got all these folders this was a 10 day course it was an intensive course all day long for 10 days and for each day I've created a folder and all the content for that particular day is added in and that could be PowerPoint slides and Word files and videos etc so yes it model does a great job of making content available that the students can then access but even more than that if we come back to the posts we can even notice here create assignments for the group or create quizzes for the group and we can include video in those so we could have a video and then have a quiz underneath that we want the students to answer the questions did they understand the video or do the same in assignments so we can put a lot of learning content onto it model that we want our students to access but what about us how where are we in this presentation okay so can we actually create a kind of live component I'm gonna suggest a way that you can do that in a way that I've done it in the past just a super quick intervention hope you find in these videos useful talking about it model if you are come to teacher training videos comm loads of free videos about how to use it model and you can click here and access them and loads of free videos about how to use Snagit as well you may be interested also in my course on Snagit if you want to follow my work please sign up to my newsletter please also you can subscribe to my youtube channel let's get back to the video so I'm going to show you a quick example of the sort of thing that I do now let's imagine I want to do a live session now I know that EDD model doesn't do that very well but what I can do is record myself presenting and then put that video up online so I've got PowerPoint presentation here and I could turn this into a video I could use a screen capture technology now the one that I use and there are many of these tools this is just after many years of working that this is the one that I particularly like is called Snagit Snagit isn't free there are some free tools but the thing is I need something of a fairly good quality and an educational version of Snagit I think is around about 27 28 pounds but it does do a really good job and I've been using it now for seven or eight years there are other tools available screencast-o-matic Jing there are all sorts of screen capture technologies but basically I can click here and I can mark out an area that I want to record and then basically I can click here click on the record button and start to record myself doing my presentation good morning ladies and gentlemen and today I want to do a presentation about using technology for feedback and I can click on the pause button and then I can go to the next screen and I can sort of carry on bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla then carry on with the next page and literally just do a recording of me talking through pation obviously there could be pictures on the screen and stuff and whatever and then I've made that video and then I can upload that video directly into add module the video is at model the video is immediately ready a compliant back just check it's working good morning ladies and gentlemen today is the video presentation though and then I would just click on save as save that video onto the screen of my computer all right and so I'm just gonna put it up there to save it on the desktop so I'm just gonna call this my IDI model test video just gonna save that and now I can actually directly upload that into a model so if I want my teachers I'm sorry my students to to listen to this video and say here is today's learning video okay sorry stake a learning video and then I can simply click on attach file I'm gonna go to my desktop I'm gonna find that video which I've just uploaded so hopefully it should be there for me to find there is my ed model test video I click on that click on open now that's gonna actually upload into ed model so that my students can literally play that video back and listen to my powerpoint presentation I can obviously write something if I want to I'm just gonna put that as the simple simple description click on post and suddenly I have now uploaded a presentation into it model that I want my students to access and that is how we can deal with the problem of how we can use ed model for both the kind of learning content and the files and the links etc that we want the students to access with quizzes and assignments but also the live learning component you really need to if you're gonna do this one way around it then it is to combine ed model with screen capture technology now I tend to use Snagit is the tool that I like the best there are many other tools I don't want to be a salesman for Snagit but it is a combination of those two technologies that can be really powerful in of the delivery of online learning and trying to make sure that you've got a teaching component and then obviously the activities that you want the students to do after they've done they've actually watched the video hope that video was useful as I said before lots of free videos on using that model on the website teacher training videos comm and also lots of videos about using Snagit and again they're free there's also a course that you might be interested in if you want to learn more about Snagit and please sign up to my newsletter if you want to keep up with all my latest videos my blogs my webinars my online courses and of course subscribe to my youtube channel and thank you very much
