video that you're watching for my channel i make educational and motivational content so if you don't want to miss any of my new uploads don't forget to subscribe and hit that bell icon now like i said in the intro we're going to talk about columns today it's part of our series by the time some punctuation marks if you haven't seen the other videos yet in lincoln time complete the series on commas hyphen m n dash better today it's all about the column and um before we do that just a quick little plug if you want to help support this channel in our cost to democratize education in the philippines you can do that by buying our merch so shop.teamlikea.com proceeds there go to our hope fund which helps support this channel pay for the equipment that we need of course young non-scholars did not in so fun so that could be a good way to go and you get to spark your designs then that i made for you and yes i made all of these designs done and always makes me happy to see you wearing them so what i mean saying now that we have that out of the way i'm going to jump into you adding discussion i'll see you in a bit all right certain discussion at 10 on using a colon um colon is young symbol neganito okay it's a punctuation mark you have [Music] this is not in any way a comprehensive lecture on every little new ones um but i'm trying to do my best to educate the masses about the use of a colon enough at least for aptitude exams okay so just in case uh there are expert uh expert linguists or grammarians watching this please feel free to share your input muy emphasizes a sentence another purpose is combining two sentences if the latter is emphasizing or explaining in first one extended quotations to lagging in the game with some research papers um i recall i used to use a lot of columns because i loved citing direct quotations uh measure length even explaining my point just so i don't miss anything but getting set technical definitions and your number four or the non-grammatical uses symbols of time it's a bible verse and stuff like that okay okay so it's used to introduce a list now again um very simple now option we're introducing a list but uh there are certain limitations let's start reading minha basic muna so i could say something like this there are three murder sisters abi now a good note here would be when you have a colon okay what that means is that the first part right here stands alone ebik [Music] sentence um now but why am i pointing that out let's say it is something that you use in introducing a list unless the items are incorporated into the sentence okay now in that case you just use a comma and again we have a full discussion that in commas uh series trash likes me commercialization video you can find the video of the first nadandito satas if you haven't seen it yet let me show you what i mean now this right here near the frisco again this is the first one right here the three more of your sisters are they are actually part of the sentence okay i'll just remove it and then sentence the three more little sisters are and against space lanyan won symbol now this comma right here is what you call the oxford comma okay um in some styles i have a strong preference but it's a oxford comma so i use it and again we have the common discussion about in a separate video okay so again to introduce a list if hindi langan or hindi park you actual sentence if this part before the column can stand alone okay so very important to remember now another thing it can be used to introduce a numbered or bulleted list but another example would be something like this so pakistani korean booths have seven callers and then i put the column here tapas young list nang seven holders nyan now again important to note nato can also be a standalone statement okay and um i just use the column right there to introduce you numbered in the list [Music] okay now next second function initially introduced on it now bridges or it connects two sentences or independent clauses in sentences i mean it ended in a period no so what we could say instead would be independent clauses if statement let's look at an example sabito life is difficult each step has its own set of challenges now if you notice your life is difficult right step has its own set of challenges as another sentence however okay because it emphasizes the first sentence or the first part by saying life is difficult further in explaining that on set of challenges inbound step so again it adds okay if it adds emphasizes or or explains your first part then you can use you colon to bridge those two sentences but again this just makes things seem as if you know some cohesive thoughts dun zahanyan explanation uh so my um choice for you to either put a period there or call an alarm now another thing to point out would be this sentence now let's take a look at this other example life is difficult i'm having a great day okay now the question would be again so it doesn't emphasize or agree with okay now another thing i want to point out here is that again after a hollow and but uh small letter m exception like if it's a name or if it's i is always capital okay so again it is used to bridge two independent clauses but only if you emphasizes or adds on okay now another use is extended quotations which i kind of mentioned in passing ganina as research paper we have something like this sabito here something she said in an episode of the trying hard with like a podcast i'm using my own quote here so if you're passionate about something know that failure is part of it passionate people are not the ones who do everything right they feel they but they fail but they don't give up they just try and try again so again this extended again you can also use holland for that now detonation on grammatical uses first is after the salutation and formal correspondence so humanik data known company business letter nothing to whom it may concern this is an example to that okay so to whom it may concern call on hindi young smith if it's for it's correspondence if it's going to be a plea or or something you're writing to your boss you still use young colon hindi comma okay so that's the first one another the is that time so young time the bob you write it usually like this 10 32 a.m or p.m we also use it for racial so problems like that one is to four s two is to eight so eto markers as a math but then for four bible verses so if you have first john 2 17 which is actually my life verse parasama and the world passes away and all that is in it but he who abides in god lives forever first john 2 17 2 and 17. okay so also for bible verses and other things like that so again you knew a patna emphasize is that if you are going to use an m dash okay okay if you're emphasizing something so you said a statement tapas button for emphasis may tag along an example you can also use a column for that um if indeed familiar with the m dashboard you can watch it right here okay all right written in quick quiz not in for this lesson all you have to do is to put columns concentrate and again think critically think really hard and then what's happening at the end of your allotted time okay so if you're ready with your pen and paper your timer starts now do do do all right let's see how you did okay so let's start with the first line sabi takes a huge amount of effort to create videos i'll spend hours making each one so if you notice my dna and again this is a classic example of one thing because among students kodate if you feel after reading the sentence probably machado mahaba so you can divide it using punctuation marks or split the sentence all together on the first one is it takes a huge amount of effort to create videos and then part is i spend hours making each one now if you notice again both of them okay our next step to make sure is to ask ourselves sentence or statement in emphasizing about our next it takes a huge amount of effort to create videos i spend hours making each one so again in affirmative work i also spend a lot of time so again next i use multiple devices so a laptop tablet and a camera now this right here alumni is a list of items now question would be can i put a column here now the question is again boom sentence ba you i use multiple devices a laptop tablet and camera yes the answer is yes i use multi multiple devices i can use a column right here okay so i hope so far next to limit the noise i start recording at 8 30 pm now if you notice on e30 pm nathan we have something missing which is 30. next it's hard to film earlier you won't hear me over the sound of vehicles now again two parts it's hard to film earlier young you won't hear me over the sound of vehicles related okay what makes it hard to film young sound of vehicle so i could say no okay i could put another there now this is the time i'll tell you now if it if it is happening in real life and you're writing a paper he needed a natural thing we can play around with using a period or using m dash no paragraph okay now next all of them are loud but one of them is me the most motorcycles now if you notice again motorcycles is younger the most and normally would be just add an m-dash no weathering comma but again the colon on topic we can add the holland right here now again test sentence the answer would be yes say all of them are loud but one of them wrecks me the most so i put motorcycles there now this is another reason for example if you know this may come on okay and can i command i say this is an independent clause this hyung after the bot it also is an independent clause would be again and again hindi hindi colon along there instead of a hama okay so i hope you kind of understood the explanation um or um you can kind of catch combat union choice and what i'm trying to point out again there are even better um examples out there in the real world this is just one of them okay next why do they need to rev their engines and speed inside the subdivision okay so why do they need to read their engines and speed inside a question mark question mark so again again next my aunt says it best empty cans make the loudest noise now again you can use a comma here but since less than that in this column but i think i'm an example in the detail it leads to a quote okay so again just for the purpose of this lesson between videos and i in between devices and ah don't say 30 say again on time divided so by a holland after earlier no and before you we have it here and then another one right here after best okay so you know i think one two three four five six nah columns okay i hope you got all of these correctly if you didn't that's okay i'll be posting more questions
