US 🇺🇸 / Canada 🇨🇦 English Vocabulary Differences PART 2

Hello everyone, this is Korean billy This is American John Canuck Josh What! what was that? Canuck. Canuck Josh / is that Canadian? Yeah we're Canadian canucks. I thought you just stuttered. Sorry. We are called the "Canucks" Where does that come from? probably inuit word? somebody google that and tell us in the comments. So today in this video we're going to be finding more vocabulary differences between American English and Canadian English because there are much more to cover so today in this video I have also prepared a variety of photos and I'm going to show you the photos and ask you again how you call what you call this object in each photo and write it down. Cool Okay the first word is this one okay so three two one oh okay I think I can add that one I can't do it backwards or upside down but I'll add that I think that's very common also okay I agree sofa can be it or a couch so in American English couch or sofa couch sofa and in Canadian English? so this has a legend here okay so couch double asterisks because 100 most common couch for sure for sofa is a little tilde because sometimes you could say it everyone would understand but it did sound a little bit strange to me when i came to korea because most koreans when they're saying when they're speaking english, right? they call this sofa and I wasn't too used to hearing that it's usually just couch okay oh okay but if you google like Canadian slang stuff then you'll see chesterfield chesterfield? is that a brand name? I have no idea so have you heard of chesterfield that word? no as a place yes i don't know if it's a place but if someone said chesterfield i would just imagine they're talking somewhere in England it's like oh yeah I've been to chesterfield yeah sure yeah so like oh I'm sitting on a chesterfield that would sound a little bit strange? It would sound strange yes sitting on chesterfield yeah I would say please explain more sure yeah and yeah you you use both sofa and couch? I'm really thinking like unlike the asterix and the tilde I did not know the name to that I would say these are pretty interchangeable I never felt weird hearing sofa at all um I thought it was just an it's just a synonym to me It could be regional but i feel like couch and sofa are pretty pretty even on that one and you also generally use couch but chesterfield at the same time no that's the that's the down there yeah yeah okay and you also have like a Canadian accent when you say like couch or a sofa Say it again Say it again now that I am thinking about it. They are gonna come out, right? That's true. Couch again? Couch Couch. I heard that. a little bit of I feel like the u is getting extented a bit becomes ou couch couch sofa. it's little bit deeper o but sofa sofa sofa and couch it really shortens like couch very short interesting in American English it's couch and sofa and Canadian English 99.9 couch sometimes sofa almost never chesterfield okay and the next one is this one How would you call this place? three two one fire station Oh fire hall, fire station fire station and in the bracket it's the technical word I believe you could call it a fire hall I feel like I've heard that whenever I had like school trips to fire stations some of the actual firefighters would say it's the fire hall so if you said that I think most people would understand you but more commonly just call it fire station yeah but what about have you ever used like fire hall? Would that make sense to Americans? no no from what I can understand it would be like if someone said let's go to the fire hall unless there is a more context involved it would be difficult to understand so again in American English fire station and Canadian English fire station fire hall the next one is this one Childhood. I sometimes miss that three two one oh otter pops is the one I used all the time and heard all the time it's a brand name I think I'm pretty sure it's a brand name otter pops otter pops otter pops. otter. so otter pops and I'm sure they're called freezees somewhere in America I've never heard otter pops yes finally I have one so in Canadian english it's not just called freezee oh freezee not freeze freezee maybe there's an extra e on here so like have you not heard of freezees? you know if someone said you know I love the freezees I would immediately think of frozen treat of some sort not ice cream so this might come to mind but it wouldn't be like automatic and otter pops would be automatic is that the one of the most popular like brand for that kind of product? it may not be a brand but it's we always call them otter pops okay yeah or mouth cutters or something like that ice sticks ice sticks ice sticks flavored ice stick and have you heard of auto pops? never but now that John saying the brand name thing I feel like I just had a memory flash of brand freezee with a snowman on it that's that if we could google image that it's like boom boom boom my brain, too yeah so that's why it's called freezee yeah otter pops otter pops Canadian freezee freezee interesting okay move on and the next one is this one okay yeah so three two one in American English interesting spelling on the napkin part cloth napkin you can just say napkin with normal context but to say that specifically you would have to say cloth cloth fabric yeah I think cloth napkin if it's made of just paper it's just napkin just paper is napkin in Canadian English? pretty much everything is napkin you don't have to say cloth whether it's a fabric one like this picture or just a cheap one or something yeah yeah napkin It's all just napkin but in the Can I try? yeah sure. Serviette. You are pretty close Really? Serviette Serviette yeah so that's really sounds French and I only wrote that because the photo right? it has a very sort of upscale looking restaurant and so in those cases you would hear serviette if I rolled in and said napkin then people would be like "oh" yeah but yeah okay so again in American English uh not serviette cloth napkin or just napkin I think is quite common and Canadian English? napkin if you're upscale serviette okay so this is the last one three two one so in American English? Toque? Touque get my toque on that's right I just call this like a winter hat like a hat you just pull it on it's just a hat I've heard the word beanie I don't know if it applies to the winter style or if it's just the more stylish one yeah but I have heard beanie before yeah it must be a kind of beanie actually yeah or just a knitted hat knitted hat yeah I like that but you have a specific word for that and a little bit of a story so my western friends they didn't know what I meant when I said touque yeah oh yeah so eastern eastern Canada.
