welcome to the japanese countryside look at all that green in the distance you can even hear a waterfall that behind us is the focus of this episode this is a i guess you could say a camper van one that i i've been greg and i have been driving around here in japan you can take a look at it it's a lot larger than your normal car i like the fact that the back swings open and check it out this is where we've been sleeping there are two beds there's an upper and a lower i had the lower grig head the upper because of height differences i'm slightly taller that made greg slightly better suited for this slightly higher bed did you did you enjoy your time sleeping up there no not really at all not really you didn't like it i thought you're oh i slept diagonally and i still had my legs coming up over this way the way you were moving around up there i thought you were having fun he slept a total of about eight hours over two nights look at this luxury bed down here this would have been nice i slept great here i had a wonderful sleep it's about seven hours each night but we've had a pretty heavy load of filming onsen um let me take you inside a little bit here you wanna open up that drawer look at that these are chairs that you can set up which we never used did we you know you got to put that away right now you have to put away i got to put it away what there you go that's nature we're going to be taking you in a second to a better view no i'm just right here he needs a drink right there in your little arm armchair armchair driver greg's been driving because we seem to have more confidence in his driving abilities in this bad boy and i'm going to be taking you inside this is brought to you well like it's not really commercial they don't know i'm doing this dream drive is the name of my friend's company jared who has been making these vans and converting them into i guess he i don't know if he buys them new or not or but he converts these really beautifully into campers so they're not originally like this there's a lot of little details with this this is a sink check it out it's got this kind of wabi-sabi look to it and uh the water is up here there's different vans have different styles the waters get caught down here you can see it collects and is that a canadian leaf right down there there's a gas burner so you can uh cook some stuff and a brush to keep it clean inside there's a lock and inside here we found like a pot and a cup and things that we can dish washing soap so we can keep everything really clean i had a cup of joe this morning get in there make sure you lock it in place i like these little things where you can put your shoes greg has a size seven and i got a size 10 and a half so drake's got to use two what'd you find there you could about to burn your own hair oh we could have eaten on we could have put the technique well how come we didn't find that before i blame you blame me the big big bad guy it's my fault i'll take it all right let's get inside here hey jeff hangs in the house greg and john breakfast on me you got it we're gonna we're gonna go into town in a second here um i like the shelving we greg didn't find out this until about 30 minutes ago that this turns into a table this is pretty neat it doesn't quite go in there just gonna give it a little love oh you get a little love tap there you go so you can do some cooking or put the dishes on here inside very nice there's a seat here there's seat belts so if you do pick up a hitchhiker which we didn't do but we would have because i respect hitchhikers as one myself there's also a place in the backyard where you can have passengers sitting maybe kids or something there's seat belts there for them um and the beds are pretty comfortable again i'm thinking i'm thinking greg that your bed was not meant for an adult definitely not definitely not this is for maybe a mom and dad and maybe little billy and little esmerelda 100 10 year olds i would say under 10 yeah i think under 10 would be a lot of fun because it sort of looks like a fort all right like let me demonstrate how i have to get up the bed here all right okay all right we have to go the other way john i gotta go the other way okay okay so push this over yeah you got it john oh yeah i'm i see it all so you have to do like a slide jump like oh wait hold on execution can you do that again oh goodness do it again i want to get it from the other side let me get it from the other side you really have to work at it that's it so that's that's how you you get in there without without hitting your head you have time this jump here hold on it's a swan jump these things move as well these protections but it's it's really good okay yeah i'm ready superman jump in there yeah and that's that's the way to do it yeah that looked like you were having fun admit it admit it right he's not gonna admit it anything yeah i know it kind of stunk but like do you see me fitting there i'm almost six foot wait greg you look like a fish in an ocean oh my goodness that's too big for you it's not as much fun if you have all that space right i don't know see this would have been nice and then you have a folder for all your things yeah i like this little corridor my camera bags there backpacks there's a lot of space for stuff a little uh night table i guess you can call that and there's a lantern it came with a lot of things in there there's lights installed on the roof here so you can illuminate inside there but one of the features that i really loved do you see these clips up here it's holding something like a mosquito net that you can swing open this door i didn't know that that looks like how you normally edit life where i'm from videos just like this i guess it's like another nightstand it's another night stand maybe if you're laying with your stomach here you can you can do it like this i'm not sure but it could be handy little teeny things that we discovered over the course of the last 48 hours like this table right now we've only had it for about 48 hours anyways we've been mostly out of the van we've been mostly out of the van but you can leave this open at night and you close those mosquito or or nets and you can have the night air coming in as you sleep it's really comfortable we tried this um all right i'm gonna tell you story are you ready for this greg don't listen to this greg's not here hurry come to the other side so so there's there's comforters here do you see this right there's one here but greg didn't greg slept on top of it and didn't think he had a blanket and he was freezing because it's it's kind of chilly up here in the mountains he was freezing with a little teeny sheet so he got he got upset or something he got out and then he closed this door but he did oh he's right there so you didn't find the comforter and then you had to close the door because you got cold but you wouldn't have closed the door had you have found this comforter which no no i put my fleece on my pants on and everything but it wasn't enough it was still cold yeah you're getting a lot of poor greg's [Laughter] poor greg's cramped up on the top didn't know there was a yeah but it's it's comf comfortable he's he's happy he's happy he's wearing a mask because he doesn't want to smile um very good driving pretty smooth i i had to drive this through tokyo to get to greg and and it was slightly worrying because i'd never driven something this big but there's a lot of a lot of space behind the driver's seat there's so many things that i love about this there's the water tank um gps big big battery down there so you can charge stuff uh even when the car is off this generates quite a lot of electricity greg was able to to drain it to zero charging all his drone batteries so there's nothing left for me he's there but i'm not angry it's not a big deal the handbrake was interesting too do you see that that's kind of a hard thing to do there's a trigger here and you have to twist it i've never seen a handbrake like that but once you get the hang of it it's okay do you have any questions about the van people dreamdrive.life is the website you can check it out jared's a good guy he's an aussie who is converting these japanese vans into these amazing campers they vary in size there's even bigger ones i i think that this might be this is a good size for two of us but you might as well go for the bigger one right this is a hiyachi a toyota hiachi that's converted into a dream drive really retail price i'm not quite sure um i think it's something like i don't know if i want to spitball it dream i'm not life you can see the prices there all right we're going to take you now this is fukushima there's a kokeshi which are these wooden dolls japanese dolls we're gonna take you down into um there and then in about five minutes we're gonna come back and drive you into town greg's gonna drive because uh i can hold the gimbal and i could show you an amazing view as we sweep down into the city i'm gonna go take people to the um the place oh oh yeah so the water does work pretty good you can brush your teeth in there but we kind of were afraid to use it so we brushed our teeth outside and spit it against um like a drain or something it's kind of neat to put the shoes down there very fancy it's home in a truck home in a van and i think that's a pretty cool a pretty cool thing um it drives pretty good in the highway it's a gas guzzler kind of how many liters did it take at the gas station how many what how many liters did it take i don't know hey i'm am i going to be on life where i'm from i'm going gonna be on life where i'm from awesome all right check it out here so we're parked there because um there was no signal where where we've been camping there have been no there has been no signal hey irvan is here trail mix [Laughter] you got it and maybe a burger later thank you john kimura we're gonna be stopping in a service area and i don't know if we're gonna get a chance to live stream there but um we don't have permission to live stream at the surface area it's always a little bit worrying to do that without permission tony p is in the house bs fatboy's hair nice to see you best boy long time viewer since the days of the hitchhiking right zana dude still wearing that mask safety first i think though greg like we we've been sleeping together if if one of us did have it yeah it's no laughing matter it's always good that's a good thing though you do have to wear your mask but out here i found out that not a lot of the locals are wearing their masks too much i don't think they they some of these towns have zero infections but they still have all of the precautions the vinyl sheets people are wearing their masks though just like outside in nature hiking i don't really see too many people wearing masks hiking most of the hiking trails that we went on are deserted almost nobody out here so jennifer french is in the house rolling with pearman and mayor what's up greg john you're always having fun awesome van and beautiful view keep being awesome thank you mr hogland craigs this is going to be on life where i'm from you're seeing an inside view of life where i'm from right now this is greg at work it's using a sony camera pushing buttons right now he's got a four iron just going for the hole oh that's a very nice swing pushing that button great view his view has to be better than this with his camera he might be able to achieve it nice to have brenda with us too i actually filmed this in the winter two years ago for an onsen shoot this is this is called uh tsuchu t-s-u-c-h-i-y-u which basically means like like what land land bath guess the mountains at the time that had snow all over it it was a beautiful drone scene that i took from here and you can hear the water running we're going to be driving you now down into the city this is a beautiful observation point and i thought i would bring you here to take a look at it a little onsen town carrie larsen writes in nice view greg is now in his element that's right toro porco don't bother greg when he's in his in the zone kevin knows that i go is so cute why do you have a great golf voice i you know when i was a kid i always wanted to be a golf announcer i thought that was a dream dream job you could show a lot of passion in the way you announced the golf he's got a 5-iron he seems to be going for it all the swing great shot great oh i think he hooked it a little bit he hooked it that's it live from from is a very quick producing show do you want me to film you filming yourself all right let's go let's go greg did try some selfie video which he never did before did a good job with it there's one scene there's one scene i think you're gonna like hey katayama's in the house just because i haven't had an excuse to throw that ah hikaru we love you when the first subscribers to the only in japan go channel it's nice fresh mountain air out here and we're heading back to tokyo today after we turn the van or else we would spend another day i i had to leave before i could upload the last video so i'm looking forward to doing that on saturday i think it should be done we're gonna we're gonna head in i think i i think i did a live stream in town when it was snowing with shige who was a friend of mine who was going in all the bass with me two years ago so you can check that out i'll see if i can put a link in the description or something but uh yeah there was a place that had pudding made from eggs and the lady she she said you know what i gotta show you something she took me into her ryokan japanese traditional land into the floor she opened up this hatch and inside there was boiling water from the onsen just piping up out of the ground and she'd put a basket of eggs in there and those eggs were becoming hard-boiled eggs or something and she said anytime you want a hard-boiled egg naturally it's being boiled in the hot onsen water so i'm hoping that we can just go there ask her film it and i can add that into an episode that i'm going to be doing because there's a lot of talking greg and i are making a video on onsens and i think that's a significant part of onsen life or a story anyways that nobody has to really slam that door shane that's a fellow canadian too shane and greg are from the same uh province do you like driving or being a passenger passenger passenger oh i'm i've been dr you've been driving because i always have a beer at dinner and because you seem afraid i'm not afraid i could drive if i choose to i think you're afraid if i drive that's true as well i knew it i knew it i'm letting the traffic go by the two cars it's busy greg has a very heavy gas pedal step that doesn't even make sense i don't i made that up but i'm terrible at parking he's not good at parking he's not that you're better than i am actually yeah really bad i'm not bad you haven't seen can i drive she's a beginner one time she she forgot her seat belt and it kept blinking and beeping and she goes why is it beeping why is the car angry at me why is the car angry at me won't stop beeping and i told you you forgot your seatbelt oh that she's a brand new driver she's doing all the proper checks to checking the mirror like six times for those of you who saw that live stream two years ago this brings back memories i think there were like 300 people watching at that time there's the bridge it was snowing pretty hard as well in that live stream [Music] in japan they always back up the vehicles [Music] i lied a monster you windowed me that's what i get for what for messing around with him bet you weren't expected this huh take that waterfall from tsuchiu and fukushima very nice hey ufo bob's here hey how's it going awesome and jeffrey's here jeffrey sherry jamie good morning greg and john hey john when is the oij lonely planet style japan video japan guidebook coming out that would be really awesome mentoring in a coffee table book i want to make a coffee table book that is a coffee table this kramer already took that manhole fighting fires it looks like a waterfall in a tube so slow i do i like we we i don't know greg's getting into his element now he's learning how to tease these people beautiful the water here in fukushima is so beautiful in central fukushima this is through the town and not too far away is the onsen that i filmed at the or well this is tsuchiyu onsen but the gyocon that i filmed at is not too far away but you want to hear something funny they wouldn't give greg permission to film there for his show but i got permission for only in japan i don't know maybe because they filmed because i filmed an episode there they didn't feel like they needed it look at those picnic tables down there awesome james boardman welcome to the travelers you have access to the emoji collection beautiful and we were up there we started just at the top that's the observation point right there and greg drove down he's getting some more video for life where i'm from we both have totally different styles but come out with kind of documentary type episodes take you over to the bridge last night where we slept there were signs saying that possible bears could be coming through there and to be very careful then greg got even more scary by reading the internet because he has he had a better signal than me and telling me that the bears now are now don't don't are not afraid by the bells that japanese hikers have on their things the bells actually attract them to food because some bears like the taste of humans freaked me out a little bit he's got a dark side that one like dexter i love these little red red um mailboxes here okay check it out kumano shrine is not that far away onuma okay it's good to know let's take you over the bridge there's the pudding shop oh check it out man oh there's the kokeshi dolls and the manhole covers these kokeshi dolls are made of wood and they're very famous here in fukushima and tsuchiyu this onsen has a lot of really good artisans that make these none of those shops are open now but hopefully i can go take a look at them before we leave this area very cool manhole covers i couldn't see it last time because it was covered in snow whoa beautiful look at that you're watching this live you're here with me right now in central fukushima very cool and you can walk down here along the river it's a really nice if you come with somebody special like greg he's all business though greg is all business look hey marty's in the house that means the three amigos are here eggs for breakfast i think i think we we will be able to do that eggs for breakfast because i get my mask on because we're in the we're in the town here yeah this is where i went last time for the egg pudding remember and i bought some egg pudding and then the lady i think i think i saw her go in there she took me into her yokon and then showed me where the boiling um egg thing was and i don't want to film it for the live stream because i got it in the live stream last time but it was um a pretty interesting aspect of onsen life you can use that water in your house to do some pretty cool stuff so i'm just i just wanted to show you a little bit of this town before we cut off we're headed back again this is uh tsuchiyu onsen highly recommend if you're looking for an onsen to stay at this one is not that far from fukushima city which is on the shinkansen line going to sendai and the reason why is because that i recommend this is because it's a lot easier to get to by train or by bus from fukushima city take the shinkansen there and then just jump on a bus and you're here it's not a very far ride and then you're out really in the countryside and fukushima city is really countryside city it's kind of um it is a city but it you don't have to go very far before you're in the middle of a forest that's what i love about this prefecture it's just sad that it's known for something else before that it was known for amazing vegetables mountains look at you can see it's steaming that's onsen water hot spring water coming out of there kind of like a foot bath i guess oh it's nice and warm it's real hot like sulfur you can put your feet in there everybody puts their feet the the hot water is makes it a foot bath what you do is you sit along here that's why it's dry and you can look at the little kokeshi here it's a foot bath you just don't know because you don't you know live around here i like the side the uh kokeshi guarding the bridge this manhole cover is different check it out oh if you look at it you can see there's a man here it kind of looks like a boat or a festival i don't know it's hard to tell when it's not unless it's painted you'll find really amazing manhole covers out in the countryside some beautiful ryokan these are traditional japanese inns that have onsen you'll find that here here's another beautiful one right in the town they haven't been doing very good because everyone has to stay at home but just recently people can travel more which is a good thing we had to come for work because we had a um video to make to you it should be high on your list especially in the winter when the snow falls but the comfort uh temperature right now it's about like 18 19 it's 20. it's pretty comfortable it's enough to have uh shorts and short sleeve shirts i think it's like no i mean probably like around 20 but there's no humidity that's what makes us pretty nice the humidity has has uh the summer humidity of japan has gone away especially up here in the mountains of fukushima can you travel to japan from the us no jeff the us doesn't have the us doesn't have the uh uh pandemic under control and it's still a pandemic it's gonna be a while before the u.s can come back to japan i think it's gonna happen between countries singapore and the u.s us singapore and japan have started um business travel between the two countries so that's that's gonna be like i don't know like i figure next spring we'll see some movement probably not too many opportunities to travel here in the winter but as long as you're with only in japan go i'll take you around until you can make it yourself give you some ideas of traveling very nice little town this is new this is new wasn't here last time wx turbo's in the house welcome and ken rutley hey ken from halifax glad to catch a stream watch out for the bears all the best thank you we did last night every time greg moved above i thought it was a bear attack on the truck on the camper van oh look at that that's that's why i gotta i gotta go get my camera and come back and ask the lady if you ask the lady um you can't call in and reserve this you just ask her and she'll show you but the onsen eggs are so good they're just an egg in a bowl with a little bit of salt a little bit of ponzu there's some dashi oh it's so good are you greg from life where i'm from he's all business when i'm filming i'm like the same way i have these eyes like rocky you can't nothing can can distract me from that this is the ryokan that's connected to the egg shop and last time she showed me inside the floor i you got to see that live stream later on go check it out it's pretty it's a it's a pretty good one did he lock the door i was going here to get my camera he locked the door didn't he he he locked the door that's why it's better to drive you have the keys michael g just so you know he looks like me all right he's talking about the karate kid looks like me i had to grow up in the 80s too so trust me i'm on cobra kai's side okay it's about time that larusso took a beating i can't really get down there it's about a um a three meet two and a half meter drop down to the river so you can't really put your hand in there if you did you'd be washed away to wherever it's going back to tokyo maybe well this is a kokeshi shop as well do you see so inside here they'll sell kokeshi or maybe we can just take a look it's it's a little bit too early for the shop but if you look inside you can see the kokeshi a lot of the artisans will sell them and if you if you have some time they might make one that has your face on it which is kind of creepy then they look like voodoo dolls or something like if there was a kokeshi doll and we painted kanai's face on it i don't know i'd be kind of creeped out about that wouldn't you would you want your would you want your wife's face on a kokeshi doll and every time you you look at it it's like your wife is there i don't know there's nothing wrong with that it's just slightly creepy like that curb your enthusiasm one where one of the one of uh jeff's daughter's dolls look like his wife slightly creepy all right we're up we're up on the up up above not a lot in this town oh whoa you are so serious looking that's what greg looks like you look like greg oh crap i can't go back that way that avenue's closed how do i get back around you see that greg doesn't bark like that i haven't i've never seen greg angry i don't really get angry either oh oh man you don't know what's going to happen when you're live that dog could have just busted out of the window looked like it could had lasers in its eyes and can like glass this glass can't hold me back just come after me it's a tough one all right i found him i can ask him for the keys now oh shocked yeah well you know what karate oh look at that gyoza oh yeah fukushima has this spiral thing to it they put it in a spiral in fukushima i had it in fukushima city really famous gyoza on the same pattern delicious so crispy on the outside soft and juicy on the inside gotta come back i love the roofing on these on these traditional japanese roofing it's really nice yeah i really don't know how the town is doing um i know that if if we if we're talking about other towns in japan this town is probably about the same but maybe doing better because it's a little bit more famous than the other onsen towns but we went to nakanozawa uh greg and i and in nakanozawa they didn't have many tourists at all it was really empty and i felt um i felt like people should learn a little bit more about that onsen so we're the most of my episode on this is filmed in nakanozawa hey did you lock the door yeah oh can i get the keys imagine if i dropped it and it went down there greg you're lucky i'm really good with baseball catching stuff look at the stream up there naturalness right tanner tanner beard thanks for writing in the name of the onsen in both english and japanese tattoos are typically not okay but they're becoming more um accepted especially at sento i've never had a problem heard of a problem where people went into a japanese cento which is a public bath and they were asked to leave but the reason why the reason why uh tattoos are not uh are are not acceptable is because there's still a lot of people in the older generation that are in control first of all so the younger people can't make foot bath see people don't people don't believe me all right some of the older generation is still in charge so the older rules are still applied but as they retire we can see the the acceptance of tattoos a little bit more in onsens when the suns take over the ryokans just the values thing but it freaks out the locals so why would you accept tattoos if people get freaked out by seeing them because that's what the gangsters wear you're not a gangster but the older people can't differentiate and why would you lose 80 percent of your business to let in a few people who have tattoos so just as a business decision doesn't make a lot of sense as a practical decision though they should allow everybody despite the tattoos and learn the 20. i guess that's the information center let's stop in there they have a kokeshi cider interesting how you doing so they should allow that i think uh i think gradually as time goes on interesting i like they put the rocks here to give a little bit more traction in the snow or in the ice i think as time goes on in the next few years you'll see more and more yokan accept accepting of tattoos just because it's good it's good for everybody and the older generation is getting more accepting of it but you can't expect people to change overnight the pace of change in japan is ridiculously in the world is ridiculously fast it doesn't change that fast in japan it just never has and it might never will the pace of change in the u.s is not the same as uh in the rest of the world so we can't expect we expect we could expect japan to do it a japanese way like some local sakes up there right right hey lia nelson chua to countryside so peaceful indeed tokyo tom23 good morning from the uk john here's some funds for beverages snack enjoy my friend thank you we're going to be stopping off um for breakfast and lunch before we hit tokyo so we will put all of the super chats to good use it's nice to it's it's really nice to be able to share uh this collaboration i guess you it's it's i don't know it's a collaboration we're both making videos on a similar topic in a different way so i thought it would be interesting for viewers to see to see us make an episode i thought it'd be interesting for viewers to see us to make an episode that is slightly the same but in our own ways and release it maybe at around the same time just to see how it goes so that's interesting a manhole cover in a manhole cover there's a manhole cover inside the manhole cover it's kind of cool even the small ones uh are pretty interesting you'll see patterns and the small ones there yeah so there you have it i hope that you you liked this little mini tour the camper van is what got us here the big shout out to the to our friends at dreamdrive.life appreciate that very much greg loved sleeping on the little bed on the top he volunteered too i didn't have to twist his arm i think oh that looks like fun this is onsen and we came here by campervan so renting a car and driving is the best way to get around the countryside in japan i know a lot of people come here with the jr rail pass but driving really is sort of sort of the way to get around japan makes a lot of the world's cars toyota nissan mazda hyundai a lot of companies right so japan has a big driving culture despite this could be you you these empty faces are you and him it's together hey brandon brandon brew is here hyundai is korean is it no didn't know that i thought they were uh it sounds korean but i always thought maybe um some of the commercials were made in um in japan so maybe it's like they have a hyundai japan i don't know how it worked out but it's kind of neat my head's too too small it's not what they could have said it's not quite the same so there you have it we came here by campervan we're going to be going home by campervan today but it's nice to show just a little bit of the countryside with our 1500 people watching from around the world you can write in where you're from but definitely leave me a thumbs up if you like this content because i need your inspiration your encouragement keep this going and one day when japan opens up you will be sitting on that picnic bench together where do you empty your van trash legitimate question convenience stores all the convenience stores have recycling bins for travelers there's also service areas which take the trash and you can you can separate it into burnable recyclables cans pet bottles glass and as well as michi no eki or these roadhouses will also take garbage and if you're staying at a hotel or at yocon you can also do that at the camping sites they have places where you can where they'll take your trash so those are the main places to separate your trash convenience stores public bathrooms are typically at convenience stores trash cans are at convenience stores and it's just like you know atms are a thing in the convenience stores to get people to come in trash cans and bathrooms get people to come in in japan so there you have it i hope this was an informal uh informational episode uh take a look at dreamdrive.live and big shout out thank you to them i'll be taking the van out again with kanai i think show you a little bit more of camping it's so clean right doing hawaii it's so pretty here maybe we'll do another live stream later today but check out that live stream that i did here in winter two years ago and subscribe see you soon oh that's not that's our car that's it right there she's a beaut i think greg's gonna make me drive
