welcome back to the tour de france it scales to 7 000 feet today that's not quite as high as the peak du midi here in the pyrenees our tour de france presented by rocket mortgage as we look here now at the peak itself we're down some four and a half kilometers from the finishing line on the other side of the colder tourmalet we've got a few extra spectators because everybody else is on the top pyrenees the gc has started to open up we've gotten a good couple of glimpses at what it's going to look like but today absolutely critical for your overall aspirations in this year's tour de france yes after that wonderful time trial by julian alaphilippe he's actually increased his lead but we're talking only seconds the riders are moving out towards that race start proper from the beautiful town of tob that's our cue to join the geico stage map tom uh bob sorry tarbs is a start town riders have just left got through the first neutral part about two very tough climbs there's a cat four early one point up for grabs and then the cold de soulur a very tough category one and of course the tourmalet the beast of the pyrenees upcoming the melting snows here as they're coming down from the top of the peak to midi into the valley below and we're going in the opposite direction it's around about the record around 50 minutes to get to the top and you can expect that record to be very close today because the conditions are perfect well these are the projected contenders to win the tour de france uh alaphilippe thomas christ white mass bernal and pino and they're all in this select group which is coming slowly up to the leader we now have the riders in the tour de france that one of them in this bunch will win the tour de france a week on sunday for which one good question that's the question roman chrysler that's a surprise this is the top man on the south african setup he's not south africa but he's on the south african teen dimension data and was riding extremely well he wasn't nairo quintana is losing ground with that distance if he doesn't pick it up he could lose two minutes at least today on the climb he knows it too and they're not going to help him of course because ryden number eight dylan van bol is a teammate of last year's winner of the tour good night thomas mark solaire was the movie star teammate of nairo that has been doing the tempo does not seem to be easing up there's solaire is his day is done or maybe he's gone back to try to help nairo get back in this group like they got the word that naira was dropped so they sent sue mark solaire back to pace nairo back into the field solar who's come back for him was setting the pace at the front two now they picked him up so that just leaves mikhail landa and alejandro valverde at the front for the movie star team not anymore bob because they've pulled the whole team off the front is now left to team ineos to set the pace that might give nairo a chance to catch up warren bargiel champion of france on the attack tackle the french are riding high in the tour de france and it's not happening this way we've never had a frenchman in the yellow jersey and win a time trial like alaphilippe did yesterday but 33 years the last time a frenchman won the tour de france was 1985. now every time we look at the pictures it's frenchman doing the attacking this is the king of the mountain from a couple of years ago in the tour de france when warren bargiel had a spectacular race two stage wins up in the high mountains took him a couple of years to refine his form this is the top of the de france in 1910 it was said it's impossible cyclists cannot climb the colder torment they actually caused the colder torment to become one of the most famous mountains in france he sees them coming he's going to desist let them catch him that's a very small group it was 164 strong there's no real respite now the hill takes you right to the finishing line then you catch your riders over it olive four seconds off the race lead and it's diego and bernal that's been able to get on the wheel and garrett thomas in trouble thomas is one kilometers to go last year's winner has lost the ground it's a big effort by get right here and looking over his shoulders george benny wondering where on earth has thomas gone pinot third wheel looking very calm cool and collected again bernal number two in the red jersey looking for his teammate there are small town bonuses on the finish you know god there are and the yellow jersey could increase his lead it looks like bernal is going to wait for garrett thomas and let's see if there's a hesitation with the men in the front garrett thomas really struggling watch didn't attack because they couldn't attack they were aware that thomas probably wasn't going to be able to go with them there's aegon bernal number two staying with this league group down to six riders brooklyn on the front tebo pino there now then comes them christ like then the race leader and then lander the men who have eliminated everyone including last year's winner of the tour de france this was not expected but then nothing in this year's tour de france has been expected you're absolutely right about that emanuel bookman just a few hundred meters left it looks like tevopino is going to put in a big dig for the stage win let's see if elephant philippe can respond has gone past the defending champion floor five thomas is digging deep he needs that back wheel of brigade leaders not that far in front of garrett thomas but he's going in the wrong direction he's going backwards and the riders in the front all to play for the stage win up for grabs shall we suggest the unthinkable bob and the yellow jersey wins again yes most definitely if he can stay on the wheels he's got to be the best sprinter in this group 500 meters to go 500 meters to go 450 meters the mario jordan of a year ago is in desperate trouble every second will count the first three riders will gain a few seconds wind runners 10 for the man that wins six and four seconds come off the time he's digging so deep julian out of the leaf but that yellow jersey he knows the crowd are cheering for him there's the bonuses for you if alaphilippe can take a few seconds bonus plus the time gap over thomas he's going to be feeling pretty good tebow pino he is another frenchman who wants that bonus strength from but he'll go for it bernal is splitting his teeth but tebow pinot says this one is for me the yellow jersey in second tebow pino he's the one that tried to take it earlier they brought him back not this time he's going to be the first to the top of the colder torment look at that gap great acceleration by t-belt peanut for the stage win and move up in the overall standings now alaphilippe goes he goes his last gasp effort to get back on terms with tebow dino i heard he's starting to celebrate tebow pino has done it he crosses the line in first place he'll move up a little bit tonight the yellow jersey gets another time bonus and plus that he gets a time gap as well everybody knows now we're counting down the yellow jersey at the moment between the yellow and uh number one the former the well the winner of the tour de france one year to go the second rider in our screen rig roberto ran look at this time gap at the moment looking at 30 seconds behind for garrett thomas that is unexpected and a bit disastrous he's already stuck one minute and 26 seconds behind 30 seconds wow he'll be two minutes behind out of philippe at the end of the day [Music] let's check
