welcome back we are live on the tour de france our coverage presented by rocket mortgage we are on the opening day and believe me a month ago i never thought i would say that the race set to start and faced a long ride to paris over the next three weeks the last time we saw a scene like this for the grande park in nice was in 1981 a brief glance there of the bay of angels this is the promenade de jongley a moving scene we have opened the tour de france 2020 albeit about two months late but we're underway and there's a lot of relief people all around the world not just in france as we watch these training aircraft from the famous flight squad and lapatory fly through nissa the red topped houses a nice little victory roll there here's greg van avermaet the olympic champion should have lost the title a couple of months ago maybe i'm phil legard and alongside me is bob roll now i say alongside me bob but you are in fact in america and i'm in london but i can see you [Laughter] i can see you too phil and i'm thrilled to be here after all the turmoil because of the five-month nearly shutdown in the cycling season it is quite miraculous to be here at the start of the tour de france as they roll out thrilled absolutely thrilled not to be next side you physically but at least in spirit i'm right there with you phil well 47 years i've followed every finishing line live from the tour de france he's the 48th year i'm sat in london bobby's in the united states but we are seeing the same pictures and we can feel the excitement in the app chat i'm really quite emotional because this course is probably the hardest for at least five years bob and i think one of the best and i think we'll have a great race phil it's just got very uh very wet out here right now we've just come off the first descent and there is groups all over the road they've come back together now but two minutes ago you had andre greipel two minutes off the back almost just through the descent and the lining out of the peloton so i think the last time of that climb is going to be crucial and we're going to see the tempo really rise to make sure everyone get on the top of the climb for a good position to the finish but it's getting drier towards knees but i think it's going to stay wet in the hills so positioning today phil is key for these riders we have seen our first crash on this tour if you were with us a few minutes ago we went back and watched it again right side of the screen there you go moments later the riders including talented spinner sam bennett got up and got back in the race so thankfully not too superior so phil big crash there just on the finish line of on the first lap and as we came through the finish line there just a silly little crash in a lot of the guys including jasper du bois to his caleb ewan's lead out man for lotto sudal he came down in the crash show that might affect caleb in the final today also sam bennett caught in that crusher a big name and a big favorite today caught up in the crash he looked like he didn't have much damage but you never know that little bit of an effort on such a hard day today that he had to make to get back to the peloton could be costly later on so we'll see on the later on these climbs how the guys get on and how they're going to ride but the pace phil has been fast all day long today you're absolutely right adam the race organizers just announced the first hour of the day covered at an average speed of 27 miles an hour despite the climbs they are absolutely flying today so the enthusiasm running away with them just at this moment in time here's the sprint and it looks to me as though grady a has gone 40 shaw's gonna have to go goatee is trying to come by michael shaw only the first two get points gautier on the right and a nice little result for fabian and grady the young and the most inexperienced in this breakaway well he's now the leader in the polka dot jersey the king of the mountain and this has literally just happened pierre letour is down there number 34 i think he's the rider flexing his right leg his teammates gone down with him as well and that is a cosmic what and other riders from coffee dish have stopped up the road there but this is always the danger on these narrow roads maybe a little bit of time [Music] now you carry him over there i wasn't watching the mechanic he was about to push his rider off and got hit by the car trying to get around so didn't seem to affect him too badly let's have a look at it again now as we just pick up the crash here off to the left there but it's already happened it's just a narrowness of the courses by the look of it somebody stopped in the middle and they're all sort of trying to stop themselves ouch there's pavel sivakov well adam this is a this is a serious delay for one of the big men on the ineos grenadiers team pavel savakov yeah he doesn't look good he's um i can't see any major injuries on him but he looks to be in a little bit of pain he doesn't seem to be getting out of the saddle and he seems to be stuck in a big gear so i don't know if he's got problems with his gears but the team car shot off from him a minute ago so unless they're getting a spare bike ready for him um i'm not sure but with the rain starting to come down as well in the tricky descent if the jumbo visma guys decide to push on he's gonna have a long long way and a long time and a long fight to get back up there's a crash on that corner oh my goodness one of the ag2r riders coming down very slippery roads and that's not going to bode well for the rest of this ascent in fact the second rider from uh jumbo viswa there told his lead leader to slow it down because now the roads are starting to play the part they're treacherous now and all of these small narrows let's watch again what's the left of your picture just two of them go clearly slippery on the bend i think they both were independent balls front wheel lost and down they went and look at the peloton behind goodness there was how many more might have tumbled around the back of that corner so phil there's a st still some guys getting back on they've just gone around a helping corner now to my left and even 20 minutes almost 15 minutes after that crash there is still riders coming back on so a very very tough day and the positioning on this climb field is absolutely crucial you can see now just on the motorbikes where we are it's not easy on the motorbikes never mind on a bike so i think for the last time up this climb today if you are not in a good position with your team you can almost kiss the race goodbye i think it is that important today and that crucial for the guys to stay in a good position at the front and here he is here these are moments ago these pictures if you catch a glimpse of his right arm and also his right kneecap they are both scarred extensively and i think you'll see him here his leg looks as though he's troubling him here and you can see the blood on his elbow he's not at all happy this descent is turning to be absolutely treacherous here a lot of work for zivakov to come back to the field before the end of today's stage there's still a long ways to go almost 60 miles left oh another guy now oh my goodness this is julian alaphilippe here has gone down now he is the master descender there's no doubt but he slipped out on the corner i think he's waiting for a bike or something i don't see that very often phil alla philippe no these do not best defenders in the whole sport so definitely waiting for the team car here and going to be a long ways behind in no time well this is the he's got problem with his front wheel it could be that the brakes locked up and that's what caused him to come to greece this is the only way you can get the bike wheel off these days you have to unlock it with the electric drill not like the old days oh my goodness wow the drill did not have enough power to undo the skewer water bottle is going to get the spare bike going now oh that's a disaster for ellis elite so phil it's still at the moment very hard for a lot of guys viviani's just in front of me at the minute he changed his bike with a lower tyre pressure in by the looks of it allah felipe is just behind me as well he's changed his bike back to his race bike and i think he with less tire pressure as well so it seems that a lot of these guys today have not really judged the weather and they've got too much pressure in the tires with the descent so as i said before the descent is crucial for these guys and just in front of me now you'll see it in a minute another by change for another rider it's a mobby star team in the blue there they look to have stopped and ag2r so more bike changes going on it looks to be number 34 there so he's had a crash but a lot of guys changing bikes for different equipment softer tires so they get more grip on the descent yeah there he is number seven so he's definitely the other side wow that is a horrible day for uh oh my goodness how cruel yes absolutely so sivikov who did the ride of his life there he is over there straightening his handlebars the rider in the white who doesn't appear to be there right now was nikki as aunt of team somewhere back with riders on the ground on today's stage of the tour de france it's on the bridge which caught them out on the opening lap as well and among the former tom demouland delayed last time he's down again now down at the finish let's quickly join up because mikasha is getting the first green jersey points here 20 for first over the line setting himself up possibly for a green jersey at the end it can be superseded second place is gautier there is the belt as they go out on the final big circuit let's have a look at the crash here this is uh again slippery road but again bob in the same situation as last time it's on a straight section of road ella philippe has just caught the field and he's gonna have to thread his way through that crash just as he caught up he's probably thankful he didn't get caught in that one there's richie port number 101 teammate along simon alongside him tom squeens trying to get with richie and back into the front of the field well we're going to the wettest place in france on top of a mountain in the massey central on day five but i think we found the wettest area today absolutely full of rain hammering down and making it very treacherous even on the safest part of the course today ineos grenadiers on the front there the red and black helmet writer's signaling that there's an obstacle up ahead oh my goodness that's gonna be a hallmark for the rest of today's stage if not the rest of the tour and this is the last official climb of the day when there's again two points at one point at the top of the cliff in the king of the mountains and another pile up down there and again on a rather simple stretch of road oh it's so slippery after a period of dry roads the roads those marks in the road are the riders sliding on the surface of the rain these two riders off the front they still have the same advantage they had at the bottom of the climb so holding on with the hope of getting to the next klm point i'm sure that's the motivation of cyril gautier if he can do that he will have the king of the mountain jersey at least for a day that'd be a great result for the invited by the way bb hotel squad from france these are the two up front gautier looking cause they're oh my goodness they are where 17 seconds bob and shawn is having on his shaw's jumping early and gauche is going after him a polka dot jersey for a frenchman on the opening day of the tour de france is what gautier is after maybe the headlines in the french papers tomorrow but uh it might might well be it i know he's digging deep he knows what it means cereal goat oh i think he just cracked phil i think he just did he's got to get a point he needs only two get points there they are two points for first one for second goatee got the two last time round shaw got the one i think they'll i'll think they'll be tied oh my goodness oh wow that was a huge christmas that was miguel angel lopez third wheel and and this is omar frailer going a little bit too quickly into this corner and lopez just losing it and that's that's one of the big gc favorites that's as bad as it can get for the astana squad oh and his face went into that signboard he is standing up immediately oscar freitas saw it and has eased off completely of course but there's a big peloton here now we anticipated when we were discussing this before we came on out about 50 or 60 riders would contest the spin i've got a feeling bob there's more than that here now most certainly this is tuto compacto except for a few riders off the back so a pretty big peloton and with this close to the to the to the finish line just 12 miles in change to go and about 25 minutes of racing left benoit koznerfall i believe is the man off the front but he is being chased by a very powerful dakunik squad hoping to set it up for their sprinter sam bennett well this is a good move i call it a cheeky move because he's trying to draw the sting of the other riders with sprinters on the teams to chase him down he's holding 11 seconds and you are right bob well done that ben mark cosner fought is the rider and it's of course it's big tim the clerk here setting the pace on the right with the kerning we want to try and finish it off for them with a spin victory and the charge is on now we're closing in to the last 12 kilometers about seven miles of the race on this opening day of the tour de france the sprinters have worked hard but they're gonna get their debug and on the right hand side of the road team ntt from south africa on the left-hand side now are looking like they want nitzolo to take it out well they got to have a lot of confidence in solo he was in trouble on the early climbs of the stage but he seems to be in good shape he's fourth wheel different jersey from his teammates second wheel ryan gibbons he's the champion of south africa so he also has a different jersey than his teammates ntt and the dark blue and black and yembo viesma the riders in the yellow jersey keeping their team captain primos road glitch out of trouble seven miles to go and about 10 12 minutes of racing left and george benny by the way the jumbo visma man who went off and crashed on the way down is back in the race now he's done a great solo ride to rejoin the whole peloton when he lost a lot of time just hanging around waiting for her help and he's got back that's his team driving on the front in the yellow and black now and this is simon geschke here team cct on the front as the peloton underneath the helicopter looks down there's a crash i'm hearing at the back and this is the back of the race well this is not a happy sight at all we've had a crash at the similar position earlier today one of the riders looking a little bit stunned on the ground their doctor in attendance but he's sitting up now it was a trek uh segafido ride i hope it wasn't richie port there let's have a look once more it's just gone in the center of the pack behind the sprinters how on earth at the three kilometer point as well so all those riders including tebow pino here will get the same time as the day's winner and that's the only good thing about the situation because he's crashed after that three kilometer banner bob yes absolutely just inside of the 3k to go and he definitely came down in that crash along with the teammate there so a huge pile up there just near the front of the field let's see who's caught behind that case ball he's definitely made it through and i would imagine primo's roblox has as well but i don't know i haven't seen egan bernal and let's hope that the gc contenders for these teams get through there safely but they are within the three banner rules so they will be given the same time as the stage winner as we get back into the last kilometer though we've got to remember there'll be a stage winner today and the winner will take the yellow jersey the lead out at the moment peter sagan i can't see him in the mix as they're trying to get up towards the line mitic he's there then the rush by trek segafido is coming through as they open it up for no side of kelly beans on the right of our picture but he's gonna have to do one of traditional along races to the line here sagan himself is not in the mix as they race up towards the line as they continue towards the line this looks to me as though we've got sam bennett going for it in the green san bennett makes an acceleration it's going to be very close again he's trying to get on terms and making it up on the outside there is crystal alexander christoph has won it and coming up behind the world champion alexander kristoff has got the win the one name we didn't really mention he's an opportunist and that bob was well taken let's have a look at the results kristoff the sprinter getting very good finish by match pedersen that was special case ball the sprinter on the some web comes third benny got up for fourth he won't be too happy with that peter sagan in fifth place but he's mr consistent he's looking for the green jersey viviani twice off the back today with problems finished sixth nitsolo in the end didn't have it came in in seventh place french hope cocker eight not only a stage winner he's done that four times now he's in yellow for the very first time of his career i think would mean a lot i know would mean a lot to any writer but especially when you're in your eighth tour and at the age of 33. oh man for any ride i don't care especially a sprinter being able to have the jersey because you know that this is your only chance more or less because tomorrow we go into the mountains and pretty much in the same area but it's going to be 10 times harder so having the chance having one opportunity to get it and grasping that hats off to alexander kristoff overall standings there kristoff stage winner in yellow and wasn't really even supposed to be a part of this team like he talked about the tour uh earlier this spring about maybe he'd done his last one uh last year but the pandemic changed the plan to his team and there he is sitting on top after the first day polkadot podium the king of the mountains for the day and this one yeah for all that hard work out there attacking right from the beginning they really do get a good gift to carry on and bring back home to their family bobby and gorilla for a french team this is a great result they're going to be incredibly happy with this it's going to help them out for keep the team motivated for the week to come but that was a powerhouse finish by this man here fourth stage win in the tour de france in his career and a clearly superior sprint against the very best you
