I own 8 of Tom's and and 8 of Zee's (with 3 of those overlapping) and only 3 of Sam's. Which is about right as I find my tastes overlap with Tom and especially Zee more than Sam. Even the two of Zee's I don't have are high on my wish list (Blood Rage and Deception).

In general, the lists are pretty good for new gamers. I think there are some reaches they made to make the list interesting (no reason for Tom to take Splendor over Ticket to Ride, for instance). But as a new gamer you probably will be happy with almost any of these 24 games.

IMO, Lords of Waterdeep is a better choice than Stone Age for an essential worker placement game.

My personal top 10 games that go down well (no particular order) (second place in brackets and italics):

  • 2 player: Patchwork (7 Wonders: Duel)
  • Cooperative: Forbidden Desert (Pandemic)
  • Deckbuilding: Dominion/Intrigue (2nd edition) (Star Realms)
  • Social deduction: The Resistance/Avalon (Secret Hitler)
  • Drafting: Sushi Go Party (7 Wonders)
  • Worker placement: Lords of Waterdeep (Stone Age)
  • Auction: For Sale (Biblios)
  • Push your luck: Incan Gold (Celestia)
  • Bluffing: Hoax (Second Edition) (Coup)
  • Party game: Codenames (Pictures) (Monikers)

Bonus category:

  • Classic: Carcassonne (Ticket To Ride)

I'm really surprised that Ultimate Warriorz didn't make anyone's list in place of King of Tokyo, as it scales between 2-8 players way better than KoT scales between 2-6. Also was missing Viticulture which is a much better intro Worker Placement than Stone Age and has a great set of expansions.

I think a list of essential games should pick games from distinct genres, and I think they did a pretty good job of that. Here's my list of ten, trying to represent some of the major mechanical themes.

  • 1. Dominion (deck builder)
  • 2. 7 Wonders (drafting)
  • 3. Forbidden Desert (co-op)
  • 4. King of Tokyo (dice)
  • 5. Lords of Waterdeep (worker placement)
  • 6. Small World (area control)
  • 7. Citadels (role selection)
  • 8. Descent 1st Edition (dungeon crawl)
  • 9. Carcassonne (tile placement)
  • 10. Memoir '44 (wargame light)

Sheriff of Nottingham? Really?

I got bored by the 3rd turn, finished the game (and won) and I've not played it since.

IMHO it's not even that good, nevermind being an "essential" game.

EDIT:Getting downvotes for having an opinion sure doesn't encourage discussion.

Blood Rage and Dixit? Blood Rage is really a stretch to say every gamer should own it, I can see it being too complex and confrontational for some gamers. Dixit seems kind of outdated to me.
