Tokyo’s Biggest Street Food & Festival Market | Tori no Ichi

welcome to old toady Ginga I'm gonna let this go for about a minute because if there's been a deja boo' effect on all of the livestream so give it a second and we're gonna do this again I'm gonna cut this out okay let's see if we get rid of the deja boo' effect hey welcome everybody welcome everybody to old toady Jin job this is a shrine not too far from us ku sake Jin job this is a shrine not too far from us kusa I'm gonna just pan around for a second check this out it is one of Japan's biggest festival markets and I think the biggest in Tokyo it is really amazingly busy here filled with bells colors beautiful scenery it's just really a neat place to be a lot of energy here does somebody want to introduce you to hey everybody does somebody want to introduce you to before we start hey everybody if somebody want to introduce you to before we start this livestream he he comes to this festival almost every year and it's somebody that a lot of you know so let me introduce you to let me introduce you to where do you go to a man who disappears like like the wind Gitano then Ted and Ted antenna there he is mr. say Ichi hello there he is dinky yeah there is okay I kind of crowded All Right see ya it's a little bit crowded but that's mr. safety he's 97 years old he's gonna go back all right he's getting a little tired so he's gonna go back inside but I just wanted to introduce you to mr. sage he's doing really well you can see Kai's wheeling him around the festival to give him a little bit of a little bit of taste of what it's like here and that's what we're gonna do right now I'm gonna tell you very briefly a little bit about this festival yeah we do high fives here you could be you could be 12 or you could be 97 we're still gonna give you a high five now this festival goes back all the way to the 8o period so there's a lot of history and it still goes on every November it's held in November there's 10 locations around Tokyo where this festival is being held the information is in the description so definitely check it out Kenai is gonna be coming back to explain all of this stuff that we're looking at but for the moment just kind of take it in and yeah if you're in the area and you're in Tokyo right now this might be pretty good to check out right there's this old torii Jinja old Pony Jinja is the name of the shrine it's very old and it's a place it's a place it's a place where airline pilots cabin attendants and people who taking flights abroad will come here to pray for disaster avoidance so if you're taking a trip anywhere and I'm going to be soon I might be coming back here for my disaster avoidance prayer that's why that's one of the big things with this this shrine here you can hear a lot of the sounds of the festival going on here it's a lot of fun always wow it's so crowded here people are buying fortune-telling slips and other charms over there Oh mom what do we call them if we can go take a look there he's pulling out one of the see if we can get a closer look at what's going on over here he's getting a fortune too based on this stick that he pulled out he gives them a fortune-telling slip so and now she has to read that and see if it's good or bad they're 100 yen you can see the price on the right side omikuji hey Gretchen feeling awesome thank you I'm good to hear that so Gretchen in Arizona's doing well must be some of the magical power of this shrine let's walk inside here it's actually quite large it's actually quite large just walking around here there are hundreds of stalls all of these selling different kinds of trinkets and charms for the for the shrine here I'm not exactly sure what they are though and that's what Kenai is for so she's gonna be back and and to join us and explain some of this stuff so stay tuned and and if you watching this and play back you might want to fast-forward to the part where Kenai calms or just spend a couple of minutes right now and walk around with me take in the sights and sounds of old Tori oh wow up there you can see some taiko drums so I guess they also play the drums up up there at certain times so these are a thousand yeah and these are more omikuji and Malmedy which are like special charms that they give for everybody wow that's pretty cool so people are buying them that's about $10 you can go inside of this building as well you guys take your shoes off once again they're selling over here some more charms and things that you can use to ward off evil it's not really like knock on me say Dodie not community say Dodie is very thirsty this is very local I don't see a lot of non Japanese here I just put it like that and oh this is such an amazing view look at the all this stuff all these colors all these things that go all the way up to the roof it's just an amazing sight it's beautiful there's a photographer getting the perfect shot see what he let's see what he's seized [Music] [Music] just the detail and everything all of these little teeny things inside of these ornaments it's just a mess a mesmerize I'm just looking at it and staring and getting lost inside of all the things look at this one little taiko drums inside of it there's a fish there's the Japanese symbol inside of it look at that I might have to buy some of these well and again this market just goes on and on and on honestly not many tourists know about this it's not publicized it's not in Akihabara were Shinjuku or Shibuya it's in Tokyo so you get a little song before you before you buy it how cool is that Wow look at them lining up over here this must be the main entrance everybody's out this is everybody lined up to pray oh my word check this out do you see everybody all the way from the entrance I'm just gonna pan to the left here they're lined up from the entrance all the way to the to the shrine where they can pray this is gonna take hours for them to do that you can see the bells on the top of it that they're ringing so you would pray in the Shinto Manor where you throw usually about five yen I usually get five yen you clap bow pray this is so cool I'm just surrounded by color and details and beauty and the smell of incense and like amazing sight alright let's walk inside and just check this out off are they bought one that's so cool we need con I did to decipher all this to translate culturally and yet--and phonetically and everything Lee this is my first time she's the one it was my wife who told me about this this festival Wow look how look at the colors on that it's just so beautiful they almost look like Christmas decorations but in a very great Japanese way look a little bonsai trees coming out onto the left and right of it and the lanterns the cho jean like miniature eyes choking on there alright let's walk want to show you this is incredible the one thing I've noticed though there's no food usually there's a lot of food all right Kenai if you're watching this I'm going back to the entrance we need your this two old tortilla Jinja here near Asakusa there's no real convenient subway station and that's perfect because that means there's like no foreign tourists I did not see I'm the only one holding a selfie stick what son really selfie stick technically it's a it's a three axis mobile stabilizer gimbal but all right can I were you I'm looking for my beautiful wife somewhere but the weather has turned very autumn in very autumn like in Tokyo we have cooler weather it's about about 10 to 12 degrees Celsius the light the Sun is starting to go down and that's one of the reasons I wanted to bring you here at this time I wanted to bring you at this time because now the lights are going I start starting to come on and we're gonna get a totally different vibe in the next 10 minutes it's this shrine takes place sorry this festival takes place for a very long time but I know it takes place in November and it's the biggest festival market in can I even say it Japan that's like the entire country it's a big country but I figure if it if it if it's taking place in Tokyo it's gotta be pretty big it's got a pretty big I think Kenai is gonna find me I'm going now to the another shrine which is right next door to the one with all the people waiting in line again this is a very big a very big shrine old torii shrine and here's the entrance to and you can see everybody going up there to pray this one's even more elaborate than the one we were at about five minutes ago before the Geisha performance [Music] [Music] let's walk over here this is the entrance I came into about 20 minutes ago it was this way and that's the main street over there but we're not gonna go that way oh no we're going deeper inside behind it shrine let's take a look and see what's back here oh and I could smell incense and I think I smell sake somewhere it smells like Japanese sake AHA I knew it spider-sense spider-sense Marvel Super Hero rest in peace my friend it's always tough to lose a creator a fellow creator okay okay okay okay so this is the shrine grounds guys get this now I just figured out what happened in here are the ornaments out there out there is the food and there's a lot of food there is a lot of food like more than I ever desired in life including roasted chestnuts oh my the smell is amazing that symbol means it's cootie or chestnut anyway but there's already a line there's already a line alright let's see let's see what we can find maybe we get some street food now that would make this an epic epic episode let's get some Street food so we're mixing up some Japanese culture with some Japanese Street food this is um Hoshi Maki Hachi machi oh this is um like okonomiyaki on a stick I had this with kunai about three four months ago on a live stream and this here is yakisoba that they have here I got some yakisoba action going on very cool my top priority is to find my wife just yes sir yelling her name Oh Japanese calendars check it out what's it let's see what we can find oh it's it's the end of the year that means it's time to get a new calendar [Music] that's pretty that's really pretty like scenes from from a family there's some more Gardens these are some pretty nice calendars makes me think I should make it only in Japan calendar with tomorrow well I saw your cousin's performing earlier all right where is can I got a bike can item i all right here's the front of the line guys I took you here about ten minutes ago this massive line you remember people seem to want to pray on this left side of the right side of the temple so well when they even have somebody there's a woman up here with a megaphone keeping everybody in order this is this is so symbolic of Japan there's a massive line even at a temple oh Sh sorry out of shrines a shrine of people praying and they have a woman with a megaphone just making sure that everything is running smoothly this is so amazing and it's such an orderly line look at that everybody is just there praying ringing the bell [Music] look at all these people who want a prayer I'm gonna pray a line and here they're selling fortune-telling slips buying one gets a little celebration all right see if we can find Kenai one more time can I should be able to find me I'm the only Westerner here I'm the only Westerner well you can really get lost here guys I really do appreciate the super chest we're gonna put that to good use and and hit some Street food as soon as I find can I so stick with us for a couple of minutes let's hang a left here just look at the colors on these things [Music] there's so many of them in so colorful and I guess they're gonna sell them all during that during the festival and they go all the way up to the roof here and there's a small part and then on the other side of the road or even more of them oh now I'm starting to smell the food Oh guys check this out epic epic epic a word that no is not overused is it there's Kitty cha oh look a kitty child can she breathe there all right let's go out and see if we can find Kenai this way oh look at that I like that one with the little doggie it's cute it's like a little diorama with with stuff that the dog is collected that's cute it's really pretty Gretchen rights in other any monsters not yet just cute cats and cuttable cuddly dogs and maybe this that could be a monster just depends how big your TV is if you're watching this on a 70-inch TV this could be quite scary it'll bit better um up there you can see each one of these things seems to have a personality of its own there's different kinds of trinkets on them I really you know what I really guys don't really know exactly what this is and I can't tell you I've never seen anything like it before but it seems to be something that's related with the shrine and each time you get one you know at some time we're gonna figure this out I'm gonna ask somebody [Music] and then you can see from the exit here there's more Street food I'm just a little doggie here we go these are character candies oh that's really pretty look at that oh my friend a patreon supporter and friend Ellis would love this dry mom can D and there's a Hello Kitty candy fish sugar palm on and picket you up there very cute it's a lot of candy how much are they it's about 300 yen's that's cheap these are fermented vegetables but they're snappy and they're good and they have a nice nice taste to it oh here's the end of the line this has made one of the toughest jobs in the world this guy has to hold the sign that says here end of the line this is where the line ends that's what that says right there and they place the guy at the end of the line so everybody knows where it starts where they should line up and now we're on the street I'm gonna just pan over to the right side here and you can see there's the entrance through on the other side I'm you know what it's smelling so good with food I'm gonna have to get something and I will eventually find can i I'm not moving too far away but I do realize there are 617 people watching so it's like I don't want it I'm not gonna keep you guys waiting waiting for my wife that's alright this is pretty crazy though check it out look at all these people in line to pray Japan really is a spiritual country this is a lot of people oh man and here's the here's the main entrance and we're gonna get a shot we're gonna get a shot of the main entrance right here from the from the start this is from the oh and look they're blessing people that are entering right here do you see that do you see that they're making the colors stand out even more and that's a really that's gonna make this livestream a lot better with 30 minutes into this livestream we're gonna keep going and I've just found food ally if you guys thought this was gonna be a short livestream think again this this stream already has several layers to it this sounds so good - baby castella which is little cakes little baby cakes that they make in this in this gas grill which is oiling it up look this one's got seats and stuff oh there's Oh Dan what look at that soup I just found the mother lode look at that and they're they're grilling it right here we have meatballs of the little little baby octopus shrimp and they're cooking amazake oh that looks like Korean food it is if that's it on the left side look at this little teeny Oden Stan looks like it's something from the Adel period like a hundred years ago look at this she's serving Oden like like they did a hundred years ago from a little stand with a table around it and people eating it this is so nice it's nice to see that like the traditional Japanese history there oh this is yakisoba it's making yeah kiss over there [Music] yeah I did like the aesthetics I saw that comment coming in it's very very nice like it feels old-world all made of dark wood usually these stands look like this with a banner made out of canvas painted on there it's very colorful but that last stand that we saw I Michael back there it just looks like something left over from the Adel period really old-looking traditional it makes me think the food there is much much more delicious because of that all right we're coming up onto another stand this one has well you can see the fish around the fire them that's probably sama because I you fish is not in season right now usually it's I you fish but now some are in season the cooking it's lit like chicken something I'm not sure what that is parts chicken hearts that looks so good oh man all right check it out check it out this smells really good this is chemo Dom mochi mochi chemo omelette cheap something wrapped it's wrapped it's like meat wrapped around mochi it's like bacon wrapped and Mochan mochi this looks way too good to not eat it Wow it's got a little bit of autumn color to it I'm left to try this but where's Kenai let's do a quick walkthrough and then I'm gonna just start eating Kenai where are you
