[Music] end walker's central message is shown to players many times throughout the expansion our experiences teach us that life brings struggles and pain but pushing through those tough times is the only way to find moments of joy median xenos the conflicts in radzit han and our time in the past convey this message but one of my favorite chapters in end walker happens in garland when the warrior of light faces one of their toughest trials yet let's discuss why the quest in from the cold is one of the best in final fantasy xiv in from the cold takes place after a victory for the scions and the ayorzian alliance they've established a presence in ilsibard to fill the void left by xenos and the asean fan daniel's efforts to sow chaos in the region the two essentially gutted garlamald's coffers and other resources to build lunar towers across the star the empire that brought stability to so many people was in tatters two factions exist now the ones loyal to the original empire and the people enslaved by zenos and phan daniel the latter known as the telephoroy these are the people tempered by the primal anima the scions and the alliance are extending the olive branch to their former enemies garlians are without food cerulean fuel for their machines is also in very short supply the lack of military presence means dangerous monsters are wandering near people's homes not to mention how inhospitable the landscape already is from harsh snowstorms the game goes to great lengths to show you the impact of the garlian civil war on its people these quests are some of the best stories told in end walker innocent civilians are fighting for their lives hiding in run-down homes and deteriorating rail stations families are broken some are of sane mind but others wander the frozen wastes as slaves to the primal in the tower of babel people in dire straits the eorzean alliance has the means to help but these people aren't so trusting the alliance is essentially responsible for taking their once prosperous lives and turning them upside down we see euless pier norbonus a vehemently loyal soldier wrestle with his dedication he serves under legatus quintus vancina of the first legion euless escaped tempering but his family wasn't so lucky he carries the burden of having to put his own kin out of their misery he's untrusting too and deeply condescending towards members of the alliance they don't deserve kindness in his eyes these are the savages who put their people in this position why should he or anyone accept their help now euless eventually realizes that accepting aid is the right path to securing garlimold's future he's surprised by how kind members of the alliance are to him these gestures are confusing but we see euless start to warm up he even smiles truly believing there's hope for a better tomorrow it seems like both sides can claim a victory but it's a reprieve that's all too brief everything is cut short as a harrowing cry from anima echoes from the tower its sinister voice threatens to temper anyone without protection the alliance carrying protective talismans made by the alchemists of rodzit han they are safe the warrior is also immune because of heidelen's blessing but euless and the rest of the refugees are having their minds warped by the primal this is normally the part where the warrior springs into action but fan daniel intercepts the player and whisks them away leaving everyone else to deal with this disaster things fade to black and the warrior eventually awakens seeded to a lavish meal at a dinner table you're in enemy territory xenos the traitor to garlamaldon one of the greatest threats to the realm is sitting across from you he seems too focused on the food in front of him but fan daniel is smiling at you he muses about the foreshadowed rematch of the warrior of light and xenos a battle that will shake the star to its core but that can't happen now fandaniel reveals the truth you are not in your own body the asean has extracted your soul and placed it in the body of a nameless imperial soldier a legendary hero in borrowed flesh a titan in the body of a grunt fan daniel and xenos wax poetic about the circumstances we find out varys the former emperor and zenos's father has been dismembered his corpse used as the host of anima his other body parts scattered in other towers all in effort to gather ether to break zodiac seal on the moon xenos will absorb the dark primals power and use it to crush mankind's savior at least that's what we're led to believe at this part in the story so what's the point in fan daniel's trickery if not to kill the warrior now it's all to whet the appetite the asean and xenos want the warrior to understand what zenos went through after his attempted suicide you'll remember zenos is a resonant that's a person artificially enhanced with the echo this means his soul can find new bodies just like the aseans do this happened during storm blood when he occupies the bodies of nameless soldiers to confront elitibus and eventually take his own body back zenos remembers that experience well an unfamiliar form one much more frail than the original zenos wants the warrior to share that experience and to make matters worse he's upping the ante zenos reveals the warrior's original body is intact but it's not going to waste the resonant makes the leap from his own body to yours promising to meet your friends and allies at camp broken glass he'll use the deception to break the alliance's foothold and slaughter the ones you love the most the rage the warrior would feel to be the kindling for the flames of their ultimate battle xenos and the warrior have a unique relationship and if you want to know more about that check out these two videos i've done talking about him van daniel taunts the warrior further mocking them for their position but he offers to help make the situation more interesting he uses his magic to whisk the warrior away once more this time to the ruins of garlimalde a broken desolate shell of a once powerful empire machines in need of repair tempered soldiers patrolling under order to kill anyone who doesn't answer to anima zenos is making his way to the alliance base but the asean wonders if you can beat him there under normal circumstances the grunts of the imperial army would be no match even their cerulean-powered machines have been broken by your blade before but you're not the hero you once were just an unknown soldier in enemy territory this is the duty in from the cold you're given 25 minutes to navigate the city ruins and make your way to camp broken glass if you run out of time your friends are dead you'll notice right away that the unknown imperial cannot match your normal power a much smaller health pool and very limited abilities are all that will carry you through your temporary body doesn't even regenerate health out of combat you'll need med kits to do that and those are scarce players will have to scavenge derelict buildings imperial corpses and worn down machines for supplies and this isn't a guarantee not everything will give you items you'll have to navigate this metaphorical minefield carefully the unknown imperial also doesn't have the arsenal of abilities you normally possess a simple attack combo a buff for offense and a buff for defense are all you have even the smallest skirmishes are a struggle your first battle leaves you with about a fourth of your health remaining the warrior takes a knee as fandaniel looms above he taunts you about your weakened state and having to sneak around like a rat eventually you'll find a magitek reaper that isn't in great shape but with some cerulean fuel you could get its weapons operational again you'll need this machine to break through the wall of magitek forces blocking your way it's a desperate game to beat the clock as you fight close battles sneak past enemies and loot bodies of the fallen the warrior eventually finds what they need and can start clearing a path but you're no immovable object continuous reinforcements push your machine to its breaking point but you survive the warrior forges ahead toward camp hearing the shout of imperial citizens in the distance they're armed and dealing with local monsters the first says he requires your help and truth be told you need them just as much as they need you the party cuts a path through bears bombs and a yeti to try and reach safety one of them thanks you for your service you see eventually what they're fighting so desperately to protect tanks of cerulean fuel a lifeline for their friends and families on the outside they even have a magitek reaper working for them it almost seems like you'll make it but one imperial cries out that the tempered have found you the warrior scrambles to keep the citizens alive and struggle as they might the guardians begin to fall one of the corrupt imperials begins to detonate himself the machine's pilot urges everyone to take cover behind the reaper but there's no escape the blast cuts through the guardians and tosses you away everyone dies and the warrior loses consciousness the music fades replaced by the sound of a beating heart no it can't end like this there's far too much at stake the warrior must fight you desperately cling to life and somehow find the strength to wake up the unknown imperial's body has been pushed to its limits your health is nearly gone we dissolve back to the outskirts of the garlian capital the message as plain as day with the last of your strength crawl to camp broken glass it doesn't matter how much time is left on the clock at this rate how could the warrior possibly save their friends there's no music here either just the sound of your armor scraping the streets and the cold winter air the warrior is at death's door we cut back to camp broken glass things have calmed down there since you left it's graha who picks up on footsteps and he sees the warrior's body marching down the path he and alize go to greet you while ustola questions who it is she truly sees remember erstola is blind in the physical sense but she can see ether she recognizes there's something off graha and alize begin to question the warrior but discover quickly this person is not their friend zeno summons his reaper avatar and commands it to swing its scythe it spins forward but a thrown sword cuts through it the unknown imperial survived the warrior uses the last of their borrowed strength to crash into xenos a desperate attempt to fend him off fan daniel reappears monologuing about how everything went according to plan but their time with swapped bodies is nearly over zenos draws near and urges the warrior to remember this experience how closely they came toward death about how he closed in on the warriors closest friends the rage from being helpless zenos wants all of that and more when they meet again this quest is one of my favorite representations of n walker's theme meteon's connection with her sisters who have explored the stars for an undisclosed time led to the final days they believed there to be nothing but pain suffering and misery in life no matter how promising things get it will always end in tragedy that's the example they observed from so many civilizations each and every one snuffed out for a multitude of reasons we even see some of these examples in ultimate fool and in the dead ends dungeon the media believe there's no hope for the future the only answer is to end life on a theorist so people don't suffer an agonizing end giving up will stop the pain and if that's what medion and her sisters represent then the warrior of light is the embodiment of perseverance the hero has faced many challenges since they started adventuring betrayal abandonment weakness and even moral dilemma they have always scraped by with determination true grit the willpower to never give up even when it seems like all hope is lost if medion is hopelessness then the warrior is pure resolve and this quest is one of the best examples of that zenos and fan daniel go to incredible links to hamstring the player or forced into a desperate situation and just barely make it back alive and you may not know this but square actually nerfed the difficulty of this quest early on because some players were struggling now we know it eventually took a great deal of convincing and a reminder of hermes to bring medion back to the side of life but maybe seeing the warrior forge ahead to protect their friends might have tugged at her heartstrings a little bit to sum it up in from the cold is a brilliant showing of the expansion's major themes and it's just a small part of the garland story which is a real highlight for me from end walker these character-driven stories that take time to show us their motivations are fantastic especially when these characters manage to evolve like euless if these are the stories we get in the future final fantasy 14 players are in for a very nice ride so what's your favorite quest from end walker i'd love to hear about it in the comments also if you enjoyed this video i'd really appreciate you subscribing my goal is to hit 10 000 subscribers by the end of 2022 i'd appreciate it if you can help me get there take care warriors and i'll see you next time [Music] you
