the vast majority of people who identify as journalists are professional bloggers what profession was once highly respected but is now a complete joke bank teller used to be a foot in the door to the finance industry now it's basically 28-year old credit card salesman cross-sell teller referrals opened the customer their third or fourth unneeded checking account as if that's going to bring more money to the bank and not spread out existing money fun fact there was a time that I worked as a low-paid retail worker I had no experience in anything else and felt stuck at the job bank teller was the only job outside of retail I was able to get people moved on masse to certain places for a chance to work on an assembly line now for a lot of people that kind of job is something you warn your kids about to make them study harder I worked at a plant that did tours for kids so they could see the lines and whatnot I was an engineer and someone on the line yelled stay in school a few times until his manager sent him to the break room not trying to be rude and I respect people who do it but god I hated it so much work was mind-numbing and hours were long but the pay was excellent bank managers were on the same tier as doctors and lawyers back in the day now they are sales team leaders pushing credit cards and cross-selling accounts to customers who don't need them it's because it was one of the first high status jobs to be automated away by computers back in the day a bank manager was in charge of all the lending decisions for their branch they decided who got a mortgage or loan and they had to be skilled at knowing their customers and assessing the creditworthiness of all of their regular customers then we discovered credit scoring and it turned out that one Department of guys with computers at head office could write an application form that would find your good customers more accurately than all the subjective face-to-face work in branches so the bank manager role turned into what it is now news anchor it is amazing how far this profession has dropped in such a short time there was a time when the most trusted person in the country was the person giving the news that person was also a real journalist and not some opinionated but wife who considers him or herself some quasi celebrity also with the expansion of options and the Internet we discovered that the news wasn't doing a great job of reporting the news that bias was rampant and that some of the most respected news anchors would sometimes just make something up to sell books so in addition to having more options people started tuning out the nightly news programs because they didn't have as much credibility as before I myself have long ago walked away from American journalism as it has no real value on a radio personality not a complete joke but unless you're a one of the syndicated Giants it's not nearly the job at once was my wife's friend was an on-air radio personality she was all over the place locally from tilda 1998 to 2010 the vast majority of people aged 30 to 55 in my area know who she is she got the boot after her station got bought out now she deejays weddings and has a ton of trouble making ends meet after a nasty divorce it's a really weird situation we go out to a bar with her and everyone runs up and wants to meet her and take pics then on our drive home my wife is asking if the DJ could stay in our guest room for a few weeks the girl is smart but reliably monetizing local celebrity status is much harder than you'd think and it's not like she was making Bank even when she was in radio IT support they'll let just about anybody do the job nowadays started off working first line support for a company subcontracted to HP manpower we were 90 technicians it was a call center all your targets were based around your call length and volume everything was spoon-fed in the electronic knowledge base and the rule was if it's not in the knowledge base you don't fix it escalate it worked with people who could barely switch their own PC on let alone advise people in the NHS and Prison Service how to fix problems with theirs shocking manpower also paid a full-time wage of thirteen thousand three hundred pounds per year which is disgusting never work for them teaching isn't a complete joke yet but it isn't what it was there was a time when people respected teachers they might be the only person in town with a degree they made okay money and sometimes even got a rent-free residence to go at the school they were respected and looked up to now degrees are much more commonplace and men jobs pay better than teaching some people think teachers are underachievers you have a degree in math or physics or chemistry so if you're making 100k or even 1000 K or more and some people do it's hard not to look at someone earning 50k or even less and not think of them as a loser especially if they also have a 100k study debt I'm a teacher myself I like teaching especially kids definitely photographer in the old days if you wanted a picture taken you went to a professional in fact an old picture of the downtown of my city has a giant sign for a photography business as soon as digital became common every idiot who can afford an entry-level DSLR thinks their photographer it makes life so much harder for me I love photography and have been honing my craft for twenty years I studied it in school before the digital days it used to be an art a science now everyone thinks they can do it I learned film and even when I shoot digital I still treat it like film I don't rely on my post-production to get a good shot otherwise it's the work of the computer not me priest from a highly respected community and spiritual leader to kiddy diddler we definitely have to write a song about how we do not diddle kids graphics designer used to be glamorous to come up with designs create logos and do print work now it's competing with a possible clients cousin who is a copy of Photoshop fighting random internet strangers use your logo in their portfolio or having to constantly defend your pricing because someone feels you should be doing it for free I work in a retail shop to pay the bills I hate the word just it's just an invitation it's just a form it's just a business card if it's just that then come back with a ready to print PDF you don't know how that's why we charge your cousin can do it well when they design a business card on a letter size sheet in word with 8 pints and an all caps script font and you wonder why it looks like hell ask your cousin you don't want to look like your business is run out of a dumpster I'm going to charge you personal trainer I wonder if it's due to horrible wages personal training is brutal unless you run your own business even then most gyms charge you a ridiculous rent fee just to do business in their business I was very interested in personal training until I found out the average salary where I live is $31,000 that's poverty wages every personal trainer I've talked to works 40 to 50 hours at their official job and then has their own clients on the weekend and weeknights just to make it by you're either running your own business and doing okay or you're working 50 to 60 hours a week for pretty mediocre pay at least that's what it seems like here journalists of course there are plenty of real journalists out there but there are way more hucksters than before I'd imagine the vast majority of people who identify as journalists are working for cable news or are professional bloggers journalists tide out in the 1980s when businesses could consolidate with other businesses for instance if Coke purchased 30% stock in all the big newspapers pressure could be applied to the editor-in-chief to censor the story about how coke kills CNN was heavily sponsored by Clinton during the last election and Google Maps route to two gas stations that paid them money or advertising dollars I once searched for gas stations and drove by three to get to the shell the other ones weren't even listed on their Maps journalism became less about the truth and more about the damage oh the reason you are writing negative press about coke is because you were in the tank for Pepsi no the reason is because coke kills stockbroker and financial advisor buying stocks mutual funds and other investment tools used to be fairly murky water research was difficult and folks in the profession felt more like gatekeepers than professionals but they were necessary because you couldn't just climb on the internet and buy an investment or financial product I'd even venture far enough to say financial advisors are no longer needed as well your one Google search away on how to diversify a portfolio or invest plus the rise of Robo advisors that diversify portfolios for you I've used betterment for the past few years and it's dead simple set my risk tolerance set up a recurring deposit and they take care of the rest these Robo advisors are even capable of selling and re buying stocks at a loss to minimize your tax bill for the year all for a fraction of a percent in fees cashier used to be you could make a decent living as a cashier when my grandfather was one other cashiers would make fun of the guys who used abacuses end god forbid later calculators a cashier had to be damn fast at math to be able to quickly calculate things like sales percentages and taxes and it was faster getting out of the store - since you never had to scan items you just looked at what a person brought and you told them how much they owed you he had to memorize the cost of everything in the store and keep up with changes in price my grandfather also prided himself on never needing a piece of paper except to write the receipt when I was super little he used to challenge people to see who could find the answer to math problems him or the calculator people accepted because of the course the calculator was faster but before you could finish typing it in he knew the answer now cashier means you mechanically move items across the scanner and you get paid peanuts for doing so cashier was never liked on the level of doctor or anything it was always for teenagers but I don't know of a profession that has fallen harder from an impressive job particularly smart and mathematically oriented teenagers could do to a line of sad people manning the food conveyor belt and barely making ends meet paramedic we get pooped on quite literally on a daily basis we make $13 an hour and have to work an average of 60 hours a week quick story when arriving at a motor vehicle accident we do a quick size up to determine who to go to first anyone that is out walking around is put aside for people that are still in their vehicle the basis being that if you are okay enough to get out and walk around you probably aren't injured as much as the person who was unable to get out arrived on scene to a two vehicle accident three people in one car out walking around there is an older woman still in her car I walk over to the older woman to see how she isn't immediately get pulled by a large black man saying that I checked on the old woman first because she was wide and I'm racist because I didn't check on them first I tried to explain exactly what I said in the previous paragraph to him and he tried to file a lawsuit for racial discrimination a year later and our department is still dealing with it I'm sick of being a paramedic and look to change careers as soon as I'm done with my next degree any arts career not for the rich and famous actors singers writers etc but for the average actors singers writers etc people assume you're just lazy now or don't consider it a career and they say things like oh everyone wants to be an X these days before there was some amount of respect for people who did well in the trade even if they weren't rich as hell insurance agents it certainly was never at the level of medicine or law or anything but it used to be a respectable industry now a lot of sectors of the insurance industry are essentially MLM / pyramid schemes and even the ones that are legit products term life auto insurance homeowners can be head online for literally half price the actual physical agents with brick-and-mortar locations have been reduced to some combination of massively overcharging old people who don't know any better or straight up ripping people off with garbage supplemental or whole life policies that are basically on par with payday loans as far as I'm concerned being a mechanic unless you own your own shop and are well respected in your town retail chain shops rule the country and hire some of the worst staff ever mechanics get paid near McDonald's wages customer service desk clerks picked up from the bottom of the barrel unmaintained facility conditions when I was in high school in the late 90s I took three years of Auto Tech worked for my Auto Tech teacher in the evenings at his shop it was the best experience ever and was hoping to have my own shop someday turns out getting your foot in a shop to save up money is impossible I moved away after I graduated high school I'm no longer interested in the industry especially with car technology changing so fast and the ever-increasing price of specialized tools for each car manufacturer architect it still has some clout to walk in a room and say what do you say but as a business it's collapsed this kind of happened to fold and really both from ego people started saying why can't I just design the building myself architecture attracted one too many a-holes who can't run a business model or be in charge of people there's also architects did a poor job of keeping up with the times in terms of technology and whereas once they were leaders on math science and culture they've become old dinosaurs too poor to do any R&D and get them out of the hole or admit to it these days they are barely hanging on they accept too much legal responsibility while taking the smallest portion of the pie of each and every project just to scrape by in about ten years any non niche professional will be swallowed up by either startups or by design-build firms construction firms that do their own design work and the sooner the better because they did it to themselves trying to be the lead role in a shrinking world translators and to a lesser extent interpreters the latter were invaluable throughout history it's thanks to these people communication with other nations was even possible nowadays most of them sit in some dusty cabin and take turns interpreting political BS sometimes you don't even get to see or meet them it's worse with translators since the job is not protected everyone can claim to be a translator yet 99% of the people I've had the displeasure of working with seem to know nothing about it yet they still find employment not to mention that thanks to the advancements in machine translation most of us will be out of a job sooner or later probably condemned to a life of proofreading the machine output only some niche sectors we'll hold off on Mount for now but it's not too unfathomable to assume that in 10 years or so these algorithms will have become 10 times better than they are now it's quite bleak now all I need is the games industry to crash and then I'm really in trouble oh did I mention how little newer gen translators actually earn BA and of course you have all those a-holes undercutting you by impossible margins if you don't live in a third world country computer hardware repair in the 90s it was something to have your A+ Net+ and you could earn a decent wage swapping out parts and soldering by the mid 2000s it was minimum wage job and you had a sales quota now it's mostly sales and installs virtually no parts replacement just unit replacement and it's a job now associated with teenagers and dropouts there's some money in custom build systems in small towns but generally speaking that's non-existent now - thanks for listening to radio tea ts hit the subscribe button and activate the notification bell for more videos click the
