[Music] hey you and welcome my name's mike and in this whole video we are heading back once again to kalamazoo which which is still fun to say now like the story of jared chance uh this one involves another jay jason dalton he was an uber driver and one day in february 2016 he would say the uber logo was talking to him telling him what to do i mean that's what he said if you haven't guessed it's it's weird that day he would uh he would get up to some devilment and a bit more than that so what do you say let's give it a go on the 20th of february 2016 downtown kalamazoo was hitting highs of 12 13 degrees celsius and it was looking to be a sunny saturday as uh well you're hoping the worst of winter is behind you it uh it wasn't that day and it started at 4 30 p.m that day matt mellon requested an uber to drive him over to a friend's house to pick up his car in kalamazoo the driver who was coming over was the relatively well reviewed jason dalton jason arrived in a silver chevy equinox his dog mia chilling out in the back seat so they started you know driving along and what started out was a normal granddale uber drive you know changed in the blink of an eye the driver took a call on his bluetooth matt wasn't really paying attention so you know didn't really listen it was jason's son asking if he wanted dinner but after that jason all of a sudden seemed to lose his friggin mind he started driving all over the place going through stop signs hitting cars bombing along footpaths even just pedaled to the metal trying to empty the gas tank matt mellon sitting in the passenger seat was himself as you can imagine let me out let me out let me out jason's tone throwed all of this mad driving was completely normal though as he was you know doing grand theft auto nice weather didn't it eventually jason brought the car to his skidding stop and matt tumbled out and jason burns some rubber took off once again not called 911 at this stage there's a madman on the loose hi i'd like to report a crazy driver i just got an uber to my friend's house and uh on the way there he was driving neurotic down um west main he hit a car he drove through the woods and i finally just jumped out if you want to talk to an officer just let me put out an alert over the radio i want to just i just wanted to report it because i don't want to tell you i understand what you're saying but i need to know if you want to talk to an officer or if you want me to have an officer just have the officers just be on the lookout for it i just want to be on the lookout okay thank you and matt wasn't the only one who called this in i just got passed by a silver traverse going southbound on douglas uh probably every bit of a hundred miles an hour there was a man going roughly 70 80 miles an hour weaving in out of both lanes of traffic this silver suv just slammed on its brakes out loud outside my house okay and threw out a guy matt's girlfriend posted on facebook telling everybody don't get an uber with this fella the story uh gets a lot crazier from there so the police were on the lookout but there wasn't a whole lot they could do you know if the police themselves didn't witness the erratic and dangerous driving from there jason drove back home went in the door had a glass of real ishke then he grabbed a gun a bulletproof vest and headed out once again you know things you just you need for like a regular day just laughing about you know he was then back as an uber driver for fire at 5 42 pm a teenager named macy ordered an uber and luckily for her it would be jason he arrived at her apartment complex but couldn't find macy he was driving around a parking lot she was texting him long story short they couldn't find each other so luckily for her however living in one of the apartments was a woman named tiana carruthers she was crossing the parking lot with her child and a few other kids jason pulled up to her asking if she was macy she said no and jason drove off he then flipped the car around drove back towards tian and the kids and pulled out his gun he opened fire he fired 14 shots and tiana was shot four times thankfully none of the kids were hurt and jason he then sped off to do worse he clipped a car on his way out tiana was rushed to hospital and after a number of surgeries she would make a full recovery okay so female's down she's been shot don't move okay where's the person that shot her i don't know the car sped off please so now word in kalamazoo was beginning to spread silver suv driving all over the gap but a poor dog in the back seat not a fan of that now because jason hit a car while speeding away it was now identifiable did an officer to come out i was just involved in an accident where a guy ran a red light and hit me and matt the first passenger he sent the police a name and an image of the driver jason then called his wife and asked her to meet him at his parents house he wanted to change cars because obviously there's a big dent in his and his parents were out of town so he's like grant so we met his wife there went into his parents house grabbed another gun gave it to his wife and he said i'm not going to tell you not going to tell you what i'm going to do just watch the news completely normal thing to say right no she recognized he was acting uh batshit bananas he crazy eyes full-on manson lamps he then took his parents car a black chevy and went off once again so the police obviously were looking for the wrong car he then drove back home changed pistols and went out for more uber rides busy tonight but he wouldn't believe his passengers by the way said he was fine he was singing along to the radio having a great time he told them he had car trouble hence the different car it was just after 10 pm that the really hit the fan jason arrived at a kia dealership in kalamazoo there father and son rich and tyler smith were kicking the tires on some cars tyler 17 years old was looking to get a truck tyler's girlfriend alexis remained in the smith's car as she had no interest in trucks and it was cold outside jason pulled up as rich and tyler were looking at a ford f-150 and he got out of his truck and walked over he asked the father and son what they were looking at and then unloaded on them 16 shots in all hi we just drove by the kia um what what road are we on a 94 business um and a guy just shot some people in the parking lot okay all right did you did you hear shots fired is that yeah that's what made us look and there were two guys laying on the ground and one guy pointing a gun at them all right hold on i'm gonna you're actually within kalamazoo city jurisdiction i'm gonna transfer you over to them okay okay thank you yep just stay on the line [Music] hey friends was hiding in the back seat like right beside wondering if he was going to approach her too when he left she got out of the car and she didn't have her own mobile phone with her she grabbed tyler's out of his pocket and called 911 [Music] down one female in a vehicle the police arrived and alexis was in shock she didn't know where jason had gone he just ran off i don't know where he came from he came over here yeah it's right here 15 minutes later it happened again i'm at the um kalamazoo crack around there's been gunshots in a car there's gunshots in a car yes okay has anybody been hit two cars have been shot up there's three people in one car and one guy is not moving is uh just taking shots fire do they have someone shot it uh cracker rail chevy blue h.a tower they're getting better at a cracker barrel about 10 minutes away shots were fired in the car park of the cracker barrel mary jo nye mary lunai dorothy brown and barbara hawthorne were all killed inside two cars inside one of the cars was also a 14 year old girl abigail copp she was shot in the head she was thought to be dead at the time but but she would later survive they had all just been to a show in town and were getting ready to return home when jason dalton driving by just just opened up on him a witness and also security cameras were able to give the police a description of the car a black chevy but you know at this stage the police didn't know that all the that had been going on all that day it was all done by the same person remember they were still on the lookout for a silver chevy equinox according to authorities in michigan at least six people have been killed in what appears to be a random shooting spree or random serial shooting spree this is in kalamazoo county in michigan the gunman is still at large police say four people were killed at a local cracker barrel restaurant two others shot and killed at a car dealership yeah to emphasize the shooter still on the loose is the latest that we're hearing and then after that jason went and took more uber rides it was a busy saturday night multiple people in the car they all said he seemed fine nothing off or weird you know as if he had like just murdered six people and seriously injured two something you think might perturb you he was even asked jokingly if he was the active shooter he said no that guy that guy is crazy he's got some problems it was finally at about half 12 that a police officer thought he spotted the car he followed for a bit radioed for backup and pulled him over they were expecting jason to pull out his gun and and riddle the cops but he didn't all right all right ready [Music] oh my god the police were expecting that this guy would you know suicide by cop but no he went peacefully at least six are dead two others including a 14 year old girl are hurt following a series of shootings in michigan there is no connection that we're aware of between the three different sets of victims to each other or any of the victims to mr dalton they appear to have been chosen at random uber's chief security officer joe sullivan released this statement we are horrified and heartbroken at the senseless violence in kalamazoo michigan our hearts and prayers are with the families of the victims of this devastating crime and those recovery for him to stop the vehicle so i could so he could let me out he was surprisingly calm the whole time we looked into dalton's past we have not been able to find any criminal record state police believe dalton acted alone so who was jason dalton a guy who could do all of this murder bystanders then just go back to you know chilling out picking up passengers it's all good and then back to killing you know there are more holes than there is information um on this alleged uh shooter it was as if a switch was being flicked well jason was 45 years old he was a regular everyday normal guy that is until his service on the 20th of february he was an insurance adjuster married for over 20 years with two kids a boy 15 a girl 10. he was known as a nice you know family man gregarious definitely you know not the type to do what he did yet he did he'd grown up in indiana moved to the kalamazoo area during high school his two loves were cars and guns he started collecting guns after he had a break in and some of his prized tools related to his other hobby were stolen he'd only been an uber driver for about two weeks before this happened he passed their background checks no criminal record or vehicle reports he was ubering as a side gig and he was doing it to get some extra money for a vacation he wanted to take his family to disney world and he was well reviewed to date that morning he was apparently completely normal got up like any other saturday his family and a friend he met said he seemed totally fine not acting strange at all he'd been to a gun store earlier that day where he bought a holster and a jacket the jacket had like a holster inside it but he didn't even use the jacket that day the only thing that seemed even you know tiny bit strange was that jason's wife carol said in the couple of days leading up he he just seemed a bit down maybe a bit depressed and jason said she's tired from you know day job and uber job so then what happened well you know usually in these cases of shootings killings all this kind of stuff just usually build up signs you know giveaways leading up to right that guy was always acting a bit off he'd been saying some weird beforehand there was something some kind of sign not in this one he wasn't uh political religious conspiratorial ideological at all really his victims were random he had no criminal background at all in his his himself or his family and he had no history of mental illness i say that because when he was interviewed being interviewed by the police he told them what he did a sweatshirt please no he wasn't readily coming out with why he wouldn't answer you know he played the fifth again and again and again until he finally spat it out hey jason hi how are you doing man good you're right yeah not really though i know you want an explanation you can get one cause you're not this guy no if you guys only knew [Music] it would blow your mind okay okay why he did it what made him do it uber he was possessed by the app yeah phone's talking to me phones up wait no that's a phone call hello this is what the app looked like back in 2016. this is the driver one you know not the passenger up jason said that it looked like to him the symbol of the eastern star a masonic symbol need i say more some sick i think he then tapped it and it turned into the devil it then took over his body made him do everything that happened guys i'm the real victim here blame the phone i recognize the symbol could you bring my phone up to me so i can see it i have the uber thing on here can i see it on uber and then when i clicked it and then there was like a double head that popped up and i pressed that button and that's where all the problems went after i had experienced the full body takeover it literally has control of you i would have never done any of these atrocities that have happened right what made you get your firearm tonight the ad the uber yeah is that what what made you put the vest onto yeah do you remember shooting people there's like little spots where it's it pops in and pops out now that was what he said happened whether you believe that or not is a completely other question because a lot of people said good one you're bullshitting us right court calls the case of state of michigan versus jason brian dalton file number 160287 fy are you jason brian dalton yes is there anything you wish to tell the court at this time concerning your connections with the community jason was charged with six counts of murder two counts of assault with intent to commit murder and eight counts of using a firearm during the commission of a felony he was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to see if he was competent to stand trial and three months after the shooting jason appeared in court for a preliminary hearing to see if there was enough evidence to try him while tionic ruthers was making her victim statement he um starts spatting out weird about plastic black bags you know i i um saw it cars oh they gave bags these old people they have these old black bags they're called they're black there's black bags and people drive around and you look at them it gets real it's like hey it's time people look and then that's when you tell people it's time to get to the temple of your attorney right yeah you need to get the temple because you need to get going because it's like you have anything to say you whisper to your attorney that's today's rules okay okay [Music] all right [Applause] this afternoon this was dalton held down behind bars talking to himself giving a sinister look [Music] all shown on a video screen in court as caruthers composed herself to describe how she protected kids from the shooter she was shot four times so was he really crazy or was he just uh you know this is what a crazy person sounds like i'm weird and crazy but if he wasn't crazy then the trial was due to begin on january 7th 2019 but before it could jason dalton pled guilty on all you're doing this voluntarily of your own free will yes i've wanted this for quite a while i understand that if you change your mind or say that you didn't want edward plea the testimony you're giving right now can be used to support the fact that the plea is voluntary at this time you understand that guilty guilty guilty guilty guilty it seemed that the insanity defense wasn't going to work that he was going to be ruled competent to stand trial and he so he wanted to get ahead of that so regardless in february 2019 he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole you jason brian dalton be remanded to the custody of the michigan department of corrections for assessment and sentencing for a period of life without the possibility of parole as mandated by statute one kind of funny thing that happened was that in 2016 after his arrest a letter came out apparently written by jason saying he was going to sue uber for 10 million dollars because they took over his mind and body this letter was later determined to be fake just like many believe jason's insanity i mean that to me is the weirdest thing about this case on one hand you know people think he faked that he just made up that the uber app was talking to him because he would go act mad you know driving around shooting people and then go back to being completely normal and picking up passengers and going about his normal day-to-day then he would go back to shooting again saying the devil was controlling him but when he was arrested he was completely normal and he was completely normal before and after on the other hand if he wasn't crazy then what could i would cause you to do what he did that day maybe he just like you know snapped when postal though he had plenty of chances to stop himself and he didn't and it escalated throughout the day it started off with driving crazy then i was shooting at a woman with kids thankfully like nobody was killed and then he killed two people and then he killed four what would he have done if he wasn't arrested jason won't be going anywhere anytime soon but uh hey he might not be you know just seeing the devil in the app anymore he left a wake of devastation behind him for you know what seems like no good reason not that any reason though would be an adequate one but i guess to jason it was a friggin devil app talking to him you wouldn't know what kind of development uber would have you do we
