The Terraria Iceberg Explained

i've been playing terraria for eight years now and i still get the impression that there's more stuff that i don't know compared to the stuff i do know terraria is definitely a game that's not lacking in secrets there's tons of easter eggs plenty of unreleased items inside jokes and fan theories today we're looking at some of the most obscure things about the game that have been compiled into its own list welcome to the terraria iceberg the first question is where did this image originate i found it only a few days ago on the terraria subreddit but the post has been there for over two months i haven't been able to find any information on the person who originally created the list the reddit user is now deleted with no way to contact them this made it difficult to research some of the things listed below and so if you have any information on any of these theories leave them in the comments below i'm going to have my own comment pinned with updated information in case the community finds out something new i want to quickly mention that this channel is nearing 100 000 subscribers this channel is mostly custom terraria memes made by me so go ahead and subscribe for a constant flow of original content moving on from that this video is split into two parts the first part will be me going through each layer by order starting with the sky layer you'll notice i'll be leaving out some of the listings as i go through these theories that have been skipped are mostly listings that i wasn't able to find anything solid on i'm going to take these theories as i skip over and save those for the end these are your chance to leave a comment and hopefully shed some light on these theories or inside jokes without further ado let's start with the terraria iceberg layer one terraria is just 2d minecraft self-explanatory this is a throwback to the common complaint by minecrafters that terraria initially appears to just be a worse version of minecraft we've all heard this one before and it's painfully untrue pewdiepie terraria playthrough pewdiepie is an extremely successful youtuber who has done a number of terraria playthroughs before i couldn't find anything overly suspicious about it apart from other typical youtuber drama i'm guessing this is referring to one of the boss roars that play it's unsettling for sure but i wasn't able to find any sort of origin for the sound layer 2 truffle truffle is one of the npcs in terraria a quote from truffle has led some to believe that when we use glowing mushrooms we're actually killing his children the quote goes as if living underground wasn't bad enough jerks like you come in while i'm sleeping and steal my children that's incredibly dark and i don't have too much else to say about it another boss sound effect like the previous one i couldn't find too much on it aside from the actual sound file golden shower cheese the golden shower was an item introduced in the 1.2 update that was later nerfed in the 1.2.3 update its properties when it was released initially made it incredibly powerful too much so for a lot of the bosses in the game companion cube a pet summoning item that is incredibly difficult to obtain due to its price and rng despite appearing to be simply a cube it has unusual properties that lead me to believe it's something more when it's submerged in lava it makes some unsettling sounds similar to the lunatic cultist not only that if you are in a completely dark location the cube will actually attempt to stab you the item itself is a reference to an item in the portal games under the same name a theory from those games is a human has been compressed and stuffed inside of the cube moonlord has been defeated after doing some research i've found a theory that may tie into this one the theory goes that moonlord is a hallucination which means you never truly defeat him at all instead your character is suffering from a disease after fighting the lunatic cultist and you effectively go insane i have a link to the theory below in the description layer three teraprisma an incredibly powerful summoner weapon with a challenging fight needed to obtain it i couldn't find anything too shady about the weapon but there are some quirks about it that i found namely the weapon can actually change color depending on if your character is named something specific here's a list from the wiki also what's ironic about the weapon is despite being for summoners it's the most difficult to obtain as a summoner zapinator is the best weapon in the game after looking into this one my best guess is this is a reference to a video made by my friend aggressive bungie titled the zapinator is not okay the video pokes fun at the zapinator's extreme rng which allows it to at points vastly outperform any weapon from its tier infinite money glitches this one is pretty self-explanatory there's been a number of money glitches throughout terraria's history that have completely broken the game a hoik is a sawtooth series of sloped blocks sometimes referred to as teeth which can rapidly move entities across distances that's a quote from the troya wiki it can be used to set up some pretty wacky contraptions but other than that it's nothing too crazy killing the dungeon guardian the dungeon guardian is a mob that i think we've all had a special encounter with by special encounter i mean we died instantly this pseudo boss has 999 health defense and does a massive 1 000 damage if it just touches you most players are never able to kill it but it is possible you're even rewarded with mini dungeon guardian pet if you can commit to that time consuming task demolitionist and tavern keep are gay this theory only exists because the demolitionist likes to drink probably because of the stereotype and the tavern keep gets a ton of business from him the guide is the wall of flesh this is a huge theory that you may have even heard before there's a lot of renditions and personal takes but here's the gist the wall of flesh being the huge amalgamation that it is is strong enough to actually create a human entity that it can control by killing the god through the use of a voodoo doll the true form of the wall will emerge killing the guide with the doll represents the idea that you've become powerful enough to not need him and this allows the wall flesh to stop trying to be the only entity holding back the spirits of light and dark i've included a link in the description with the first rendition of this theory that i could find layer 4 mean seeds i think this one refers to the secret world generation seeds there are four main secret world gin seeds that do specific things once you create a world with it the two most iconic ones are for the worthy and the may 16 2020 seeds there's also a not the bees seed which causes most of the world to be jungle and bee hives and if you type in terraria into the seed slot you're guaranteed to get a guide with the name andrew in honor of the games lead developer i have a link to the wiki that explains all about these zenith has infinite range a reference to a video made by mappygaming and the idea that the sentence range seems to only be limited based on how many monitors you have nimbus rod cannot have ruthless the nimbus rod is a magic item that ironically plays a bit more like a century summoner weapon you're able to spawn in two rain clouds that deal damage with rain the weapon provides no knockback and so it's impossible to get any modifiers that will change that stat such as ruthless journey mode with expert statues this is a reference to a slight oversight by the developers when making journey mode there are two statues that only generate an expert in master mode worlds those being the armed zombie and bone skeleton statues since you cannot craft them it's impossible to obtain them in a journey mode world without cheating that is anti-grav hook grapple cancel grapple cancel is a technique used to help accelerate your character using a grappling hook the anti-gravity hook has some unique properties that make this technique less effective you are playing as the villain this is a reference to a comment that re-digit made on the terraria discord back in may he stated that killing the lunatic cultist is actually what causes the moon lord to invade the world the cultists were performing a ritual to prevent the apocalypse and you of course come in and brutally murder them causing armageddon kind of suss on your part planner boxes are better than platforms my homie crabar made a video on planner boxes that show how these items are potentially vastly superior to platforms for arena building they're easier to place one after another and they double as an easy way to get a ton of herbs i have a link to this video down in the description below as well as links to the other two videos previously mentioned skiff is a furry skiff is a spriter for the game and their developer set is a fursuit even more compromising is the fact that i'm pretty sure he's the one who leaked zoologist sprites on twitter gnome penis pixel gnomes are a mob in terraria that turn into an item when they're exposed to sunlight one of the poses that gnomes have is this yes it's mooning you and yes there's a flesh-colored pixel in between its legs i'm going to stop talking about this one layer five three digits staged the cnd before terraria red worked on a fan game called super mario bros x which amassed a lot of popularity nintendo being nintendo however was very protective of their ip and issued a cease and desist order which demanded red to remove all download links to the game red disappeared for a time to work on other projects but the super mario bros.org website that was home to super mario bros x continued to operate until 2012 which is when nintendo claimed the site golem's ai was programmed in hilo glyphs this was a dead end but at the same time the name itself is somewhat self-explanatory every npc is based on a waifu husbando of the devs this would be hilarious but uh angler is a child i'm gonna rule this one out terraria is an elaborate mod of super mario bros 3. this obscure theory states that terraria is actually another mod of super mario bros 3. this stems from the idea of red's past with super mario bros x the movement in terraria is apparently remarkably similar to super mario bros 3 and there's allegedly some other shared mechanics personally i wouldn't be all that surprised if the very early alpha versions of terraria took heavy inspiration the supernova pillar is real i believe this may be referring to a celestial pillar that represents the now virtually dead thrower class pre 1.0 stolen build unfortunately i couldn't find too much to go on for this one i can't tell if it's referring to the idea that red stole terraria from another developer or if it was stolen from him perhaps it's referring to the fallout between red and his lesser known counterpart blue during the early development stages terraria is the true pronunciation long has been debated the real way to pronounce uh this word personally i prefer geraria but the official pronunciation is terraria but of course uh terraria is valid too right nurse and guide torture from what i can tell it's a pretty surface level joke about cbt moving on cthulhu ocean november 1st 2011 jpeg a very early image mockup of what cthulhu the real cthulhu could have looked like back during terraria's release in 2011. not much is known about the image other than it was made by finn bryce otherwise known as thai relogic was forced to make 1.4 to uphold indiana's economy this theory is purely a joke inspired on the idea that free logic as a company is based in indiana layer 6 the final layer 1.3.5.3 item frame duplication glitch illegal economy during this update of the game there was a severe game breaking duplication glitch the sheer speed and effectiveness of the glitch was unrivaled until it was patched the false mirror theory the false mirror represents the concept of the limitations of human perception a real mirror objectively reflects what is in front of it has no time to think or to interpret it's unbiased the human eye though is subjective the false mirror is commonly represented with a disembodied eye which i think is where it ties into terraria thigh of cthulu is probably the primary thing that factors into this a particular artist named man ray has a piece called literally indestructible object that's a cut out of an eye on a pendulum the goal of the piece is to shift the viewer's perception of art in a literal sense the piece of art has an eye and a gaze it's a bit of a more surreal piece and it makes me think back on how the cthulhu mythos is built upon how so many of these ancient deities can alter perception one-third of all copies of terraria are owned by the sudan military there was apparently a spike in terraria purchases that lined up with an event that occurred in sudan there wasn't much to go off of this and multiple search engines only spat out broken links and pages that refused to connect terrarium adventure ax lost c64 precursor the commodore 64 was a massively successful 8-bit video game console that released in 1892. my best guess is there's an alleged precursor to the game terraria that's called terrarium adventure but this doesn't really hold up too well considering the extreme lack of information about the title if it even exists plus andrew spinks the main developer of terraria was born in 1983. i'm going to chalk it up to it being unlikely that he did too much work involving the console some plate door sprite negative space some plate is a building material that you can find on floating islands or you can make it with 25 stone blocks and a fallen star at a sky mill there isn't a sun plate door per se instead the door that's crafted using some plate blocks is called a skyward door i don't think it's referring to that though instead i think it's referring to the blue texture that appears when you build with the sunplate blocks aside from being visually stunning i found it to be somewhat reminiscent of something like minecraft's end portal where it seems as though you're looking into the expanse of space perhaps the sunplate door it's referring to isn't a door at all but maybe a portal of some sort crimson theme spectrogram cancer genome this theory relates back to the crimson music tracks in the troja ost and could actually have some merit if i knew anything relating to spectrograms the crimson as a whole is based largely on disease and the body with the main boss of the crimson even being a giant brain a spectrogram is a type of visual depiction of how a signal can change over time they're often associated with sound but it could be applied to a number of different signals the theory is that the crimson music themes are largely inspired by the visual representation of spectrograms that cancer cells have if you're smarter than me and have knowledge regarding the topic leave it in the comment section below up on screen i have spectrograms of both the crimson themes maybe you can match these to something zero depth layer three background every terraria world is separated into five distinct layers space surface underground caverns and the underworld this theory could be referring to the irregular way that the underground background merges with the surface it appears to just be a wall that's technically held up by nothing maybe something's behind it relogic ice biome memory hole a memory hole is a purposeful removal of any compromising inconvenient or unwanted information that's done in such a way that makes it seem like that information never existed to begin with unless relogic tried to straight up remove the snow and ice biomes at some point in the game's development i'm unsure of what this is referring to an interesting bit of trivia for this one though is that snow biomes used to only have a 33 chance of generating unless it was during the holiday season which is when they were introduced perhaps this drastic decrease in spawn rate was enough for some players to think that the snow biomes were removed up until the 1.2 update which gave it a 100 percent likelihood to generate hp lovecraft terraria lore plagiarism time rift this title is probably the most insane and information on it is extremely scarce what i have to say on it is mostly conjecture very briefly the theory goes that the cthulhu mythos actually originated from terraria lore not hp lovecraft's short stories obviously for this to happen there would have to be some sort of time rift or temporal dilation i'm gonna say this doesn't have much merit but it's kind of funny to think about and consider every copy of terraria is not personalized and 100 percent homogeneous a reference to the video every copy of super mario 64 is personalized wx ham underscore frame 5 dot xwb this was incredibly difficult to decipher straight up searching for it on most search engines gives no results i decided to start with what appeared to be a file type dot xwb this checked out because apparently an xwb file is a type of audio file more specifically it's a file extension of a xact wavebank file which is a file format that's capable of holding entire collections of sounds for none other than video games this can include both sound effects and background music unfortunately that's about as far as i got i even looked directly into the game's sound files and there's nothing referring to a wx ham or a frame 5 of anything that being said why would an audio file have a frame 5 that sounds like something a gif 4 mp4 file would have as i discovered there's a very similar file type to xwb called xwd which is in fact an image file that being said it was still a dead end for the rest of it on ironically doing the old one's army i actually like the old ones army they had some pretty okay summoner stuff terraria is 100 uber asm uber asm is a hack for super mario world this theory is pretty similar to the previous super mario bros 3 theories uramir's e-assassination uramir was a terraria youtuber active from 2011 to 2017. he was extremely beloved by the community and quickly rose to being one of the most popular content creators for the game my personal interactions with him also led me to believe that he's a pretty good guy he even worked with the toroid developers to bring us trailers for the game the channel right now has over 450 000 subscribers and the total views of the channel has topped 150 million so the question becomes why did he mysteriously disappear september 1st 2017 the last video he uploaded was on august 22nd three years ago his twitter is beyond inactive with his last bit of activity being a retweet of chaos's creation compendium announcement this retweet is actually the last online activity he had ever the theories surrounding this are extremely rampant as this isn't the first time that uramir has disappeared many have speculated that he has encountered health issues apparently before his first disappearance in 2014 he spoke on issues with his brain and legs however i wasn't able to find any direct quotes or information regarding this i also have personally heard a rumor that jeremiah somehow broke both of his legs but i don't know how likely that really is it's possible that your mirror simply grew bored of the platform and stopped making videos but as a content creator myself i also kind of doubt that's the case the most likely cause is he had a career path he was working toward and he reached it to this day though we don't truly know i've personally done a ton of research on this and have spoken to way too many people and everyone seems to know about as much as i do or as little as i do i should say now we're at the segment where i cover some of the other theories that just didn't have a whole lot of information or i couldn't find anything at all regarding them couldn't find much on this one it's just one of the music tracks in the game same with corruption.mp3 we don't really seem to have too many crazy music theories like minecraft has daedalus stormbow a weapon that fires arrows from the sky i couldn't find much on this weapon aside from its severe nerf in the 1.4 update expert mode no idea what sort of theory could be attached to this expert mode is another difficulty level of the game and more experienced players of taraya are most likely acquainted with it maybe the reason it's on the iceberg is not all players have actually played through expert mode the vertigo challenge i am honestly at a loss for this one the only mention of it i can find is a deleted reddit thread water candle alt plus tab king slime spawn trick i think it might be pointing toward the idea of using the water candle to increase the king slime's spawn rate on the outer thirds of the map while still doing other things on your pc it must have been patched out of the game ages ago because i can't find a mention of it 2013 beach ball bounce finals were rigged the beach ball was an item introduced into the game in 1.2 which means there may have been some sort of competition back in 2013 that made use of the beach ball calamity fargo and thorium all three of these are mods for the game terraria is a post wait what no okay this isn't the case moving on hypothesis mode i couldn't find anything about this the nearest thing relating to it was a modded item from calamity lunatic cultist reverse neural network artificial neural networks are computing systems that are intentionally created to be similar to biological neural networks that animals and humans have it's designed to be able to take many different types of inputs to create an output a reverse neural network isn't quite as simple as just reversing the process though because there could be an infinite amount of different inputs that create the same output because of this and the fact that there doesn't seem to be any information on the lunatic cultist relating to this i'm not sure what this could mean that is it for the video it was quite a long one and while a lot of things seem to still be unanswered that may be your chance to make history i'd like to take a quick
