your spirit and as we come together let us do what we always do and pause as we enter this wonderful mystery of our faith and ask god's forgiveness lord have mercy lord have mercy christ have mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us all to the gift of everlasting life amen amen and let us pray oh god who through your word reconciled the human race to yourself in a wonderful way grant we pray that with prompt devotion and eager faith the christian people may hasten towards the solemn celebrations to come through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen amen a reading from the second book of chronicles in those days all the princes of judah the priests and the people added infidelity to infidelity practicing all the abominations of the nations and polluting the lord's temple which he had consecrated in jerusalem early and often to the lord the god of their fathers sent his messengers to them for he had compassion on his people and his dwelling place but they mocked the messengers of god despised his warnings and scoffed at his prophets until the anger of the lord against his people was so inflamed that there was no remedy their enemies burnt the house of god tore down the walls of jerusalem set all its palaces of fire and destroyed all its precious objects those who escaped the sword were carried captive to babylon where they became servants of the king of the chaldeans and his sons until the kingdom of the persians came to power all this was to fulfill the word of the lord spoken by jeremiah until the land has retrieved its lost sabbaths during all the time it lays waste it shall have rest when seventy years are fulfilled in the first year of cyrus king of persia in order to fulfill the word of the lord spoken by jeremiah the lord inspired king cyrus of persia to issue this proclamation throughout his kingdom both by word of mouth and in writing thus says cyrus king of persia all the kingdoms of the earth the lord the god has given me and he has also charged me to build him a house in jerusalem which is in judah whoever therefore among you belongs to any part of his people let him go up and may his god be with him the word of the lord r let my tongue be silenced silenced silenced if i ever forget you let my tongue be silenced silenced silenced if i ever forget you by the streams of babylon we sat and wept when we remembered zion let my tongue be silenced silenced silenced if i ever forget you a reading from the letter of saint paul to the ephesians brothers and sisters god who was rich in mercy because of the great love he had for us even when we were dead in our transgressions brought us to life with christ by grace you have been saved raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavens in christ jesus that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace and his kind and kindness to us in christ jesus for by grace you have been saved through faith and this is not from you it is the gift of god it is not from works so no one may boast for we are his handiwork created in christ jesus for the good works that god has prepared in advance that we should live in them the word of the lord thanks be to god glory to you lord jesus christ wisdom of god jesus christ wisdom of god the father god so loved the world that he gave his only son so that everyone who believes in him might have eternal life glory to you lord jesus christ wisdom of god the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to john jesus said to nicodemus just as moses lifted up the serpent in the desert so must the son of man be lifted up so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life for god so loved the world that he gave us his only son so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life for god did not send his son into the world to condemn the world but that the world might be saved through him whoever believes in him will not be condemned but whoever does not believe has already been condemned because he has not believed in the name of the only son of god after this is the verdict that the light came into the world but people preferred darkness to light because their works were evil for everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light so that his works might not be exposed but whoever lives the truth comes to the light so that his works may be clearly seen as done in god the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ a couple of things sort of jumped out at me today from our scriptures you know first of all here we are in the fourth sunday of lent a sunday that is often referred to as laetare sunday similar to gaudete sunday the third sunday of advent when we're asked to sort of use a little different lens to look at the scriptures and our life we're to rejoice the color changes that the priest wears and we see things just a little bit differently but what jumped out at me is something that that has come to me over the years as very important in helping me on my journey of life and the first thing is that very famous verse in john's gospel john 3 16. god so loved the world that he gave us his only son and if we believe we won't perish we'll have eternal life to me that's always been sort of the encapsuling of the gospel that if we if there's one verse of all the gospels matthew mark luke and john all paul's writings all the letters all of the old testament it's that one verse the love of god it's it's beyond our comprehension we don't understand it and if we can just grab hold on of it we hang on to god's coattails we won't perish we'll have eternal life and the other thing that jumped out was in paul's letter as he's writing to the ephesians and he says you are saved by grace you know paul focuses on the great mercy of god and that mercy leads to love and it leads to christ but we're saved by grace not by what we do not by how good we are not by the many prayers that we say even though all those things are good we try to do good things we see in that first reading when we don't do good things what happens the israelites got to a point in time when they thought they were bigger than god and they lost everything but then comes along god's great mercy and god's great love and the promise of christ and and god reaches beyond the israelites to somebody that's not part of their community and says help them get back on the path send them home build them a new temple and that's what cyrus does it's an example of this great love of this wonderful mercy of the fact that it's god through his grace who saves us it's a it's a wonderful thought to pause you know we can get all caught up in lent of what we're doing wrong and giving up things and all of that is wonderful giving to the poor and and sort of reflecting on our life perhaps going to confession but it's always going to be by god's grace that we move forward in some some ways what we have to always do is let go and let god that's what the israelites had to do that's what paul tells the ephesians to do and maybe that's what we're being told today as we continue this wonderful journey of lent we know that god is rich in mercy so with confidence we offer our prayers and needs this day our responses lord hear our prayer we pray for all who struggle with faith that they may come to know the wonders of god's loving mercy we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for all who find themselves in harm's way especially those working to build a peaceful world may they their efforts be hope-filled and life-giving we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for the intentions of our benefactors the intentions of our sunday mass faith community that will be placed next to the altar and for john a christie for whom we pray in a special way at this mass we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer eternal god you slow loved the world that you gave your only son so we place our prayers and needs in your loving hands through christ our lord amen [Music] keeps us [Music] is [Music] be your glory shall find rest [Music] pray sisters and brothers that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at our hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all this holy church we place before you with joy these offerings which bring eternal remedy o lord praying that we may both faithfully revere them and present them to you as is fitting for the salvation of the world through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord and let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through bodily fasting you restrain our faults and raise up our minds and bestow both virtue and its rewards through christ through him the angels praise your majesty dominions adore and powers tremble before you heaven and the virtues of heaven and the blessed seraphim worship together with exaltation may our voices we pray join with theirs in humble praise as we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more gave you thanks gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] when we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim your death o lord until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope nicholas our bishop and all whom you call to the ministries of your church remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we humbly pray our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but look on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever may the peace of the lord be with you always and with your spirit offer anyone that you're with a gesture of peace as we do it here lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world grant us peace behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed jesus hope for all
