The Spirit Speaks: Dreams

now on this edition of spirit church first stiva Moctezuma is here with me he's gonna lead you in some very anointed worship and then we're gonna get right into this message now let's worship together [Music] me [Music] ah [Music] [Music] [Music] Maes favor be upon you and a thousand generations and your family and your children and the children and the children may favor be upon you and a thousand generations and your family your children and the children and the children may his presence go before you and behind you and beside you all around here and within you he is with you he is with you he is with you is with you [Music] [Laughter] he is with you [Music] ha ha ha [Music] ha [Music] uhh [Music] though the Holy Spirit speaks to us in dreams it's very important that you understand but the primary way that God speaks is through his word if you're serious about hearing the voice of the Holy Spirit then you must be serious about your devotion to his word the Holy Spirit uses the word to build our foundation that gives us a greater understanding of who God is so you must learn to base your life on the Word of God the authority of divine dreams only goes so far dreams though they may be from God are limited in their authority Deuteronomy chapter 13 says this suppose there are prophets among you or those who dream dreams about the future and they promise you signs or miracles and the predicted signs are miracles occur if they then say come let us worship other gods as gods you have not known before do not listen to them the Lord your God is testing you to see if you truly love him with all your heart and soul serve only the Lord your God and fear Him alone obey his commands listen to his voice and cling to him so here we see in Deuteronomy chapter 13 that though someone has a dream that is seemingly divine even if that dream predicts the future that doesn't automatically give that individual a greater authority than the Word of God ultimately we're going to come back to what the Bible says obey his commands his commands that's his word his sure word the Bible is the more sure word of prophecy so though God can speak through dreams though the Holy Spirit does reveal things to dreams again I must emphasize that ultimately our foundation is the Word of God and the Word of God also acts as a safety net keeping you from going off into some weird theology or off on some tangent that you shouldn't even be wasting your time on so stay grounded in the word though you can look for some significance in your dreams it's important that we always come back to the word the word is the foundation what is the safety net and the word is that measure against which we compare the message of these dreams so not every dream has spiritual significance sometimes it's just your mind processing its own issues from throughout the now dreams can either be holy or unholy depending upon the decisions that you make during the time that you are awake and living your everyday life what you feed your mind throughout the day will manifest in dreams therefore when I live a holy life when I live a life devoted to the word when I live a life devoted to prayer then I become more susceptible to receiving divine revelation through dreams when I live holy and think holy and talk holy then i unblock my dream state and allow for the Holy Spirit to move even in my dreams there were times when I would fall asleep sleep praying and in my dreams I would be praying in tongues and then I would wake up praying in tongues and weeping in the presence of God and then we hear of believers who struggle with dreams that are ungodly and they wonder how they keep having these dreams well you have to ask yourself what you're putting into your mind throughout the day that causes you to have those dreams at night so your mind is processing your day when you dream and if you're inputting godly things you're inputting the word you're inputting a devotion to prayer you're inputting a lifestyle of holiness then what will manifest in your dream state is going to be holy many verses in the Bible support several of the points I'm about to make but for the sake of brevity and for the sake of simplicity I'm not going to give an exhaustive list of all the scriptures on dreams this lesson is going to focus on some of the primary points in how the Holy Spirit speaks to us in our dream state so number one God can actually impart to you through your dreams think about the fact that solomon received wisdom through a divine interaction that took place in his dream though he was dreaming he did in fact interact with god this is what the Bible says in first Kings chapter number three that night the Lord appeared to Solomon a dream and God said what do you want ask and I will give it to you Solomon replied you showed great and faithful love to your servant my father David because he was honest and true and faithful to you and you have continued to show this great and faithful love to him today by giving him a son to sit on his throne now Oh Lord my God you have made me King instead of my father David but I am like a little child who doesn't know his way around and Here I am in the midst of your own chosen people a nation so great and numerous they cannot be counted give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong for who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours because you have this is what government because you have asked for wisdom in governing my people with justice and have not asked for a long life or wealth or the death of your enemies I will give you what you asked for I will give you a wise and understanding heart so as no one else has ever had or ever will have and I will also give you what you did not ask for riches and fame no other King and all the world will be compared to you for the rest of your life and if you follow me and obey my decrees and my commands as your father David did I will give you a long life then solomon verse 15 woke up and realized it had been a dream he returned to jerusalem and stood before the Ark of the Lord's covenant where he sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings then he invited all his officials to a great banquet so here we see that God imparted wisdom to Solomon through a dream impartation can take place through a dream first Kings chapter 5 verse 12 says so the Lord gave wisdom to Solomon just as he had promised so Solomon realized that his interaction with God took place in a dream but even though his interaction with God took place in a dream he still received wisdom in real life when did God promise that wisdom God promised that wisdom through the dream that Solomon had impartation can take place through a dream this is actually an exciting reality because even when you sleep you can experience the wonders of God I had a dream a few years ago and in my dream I was visiting the office of Katherine Coleman now I don't know if that's exactly what her office looked like I don't know how realistic the dream was but I do know that something in the spirit was happening in the dream and no I don't believe that I was actually communicating with Miss Coleman I believe that it was in an analogy so to speak that God was showing me through my dream but I could feel the power of the Holy Spirit intensely in that dream all I remember was this somebody escorted me into her office and I saw her standing in the room her back was turned toward me and she was wearing that long white flowing gown she turned around to me and all she said was David how are you and she put her arms around me and gave me a hug and I felt this intense heat envelop my body I felt like currents of electricity pulsing up and down my being and then I woke up I don't know exactly what God did through that dream but I know there was something significant to it I had another dream of one of my spiritual fathers in fact it was a recurring dream I would have this dream probably once or twice a year and I had it once or twice a year for probably four or five years and in the dream I saw this man of God walking by me and I would reach out to try to talk to him but instead of just touching his shoulder or touching his arm I actually tried to grab the fringe of his coat and each time in my dream when I reached out to try to grab the fringe of his coat he would move past me before I could do it and then in one of the dreams that I had and again this was a recurring dream I actually caught the coat and then I woke up it was only a few weeks later that I actually made a personal connection with this man of God and the rest was history God can impart things through dreams in fact many people write to me telling me that I'm appearing in their dreams quite often I don't think I'm actually appearing in their dreams but there's something that God is saying though God doesn't necessarily speak literally in dreams all the time sometimes he uses analogies or things that we can understand to communicate a spiritual principle I certainly do sense some impartation took place something happened in the spirit when I had those dreams the same was true of Salomon number two God can reveal the future through his dreams in Genesis chapter 41 we see Joseph interpreting the dream of Pharaoh verse 14 Pharaoh sent for Joseph at once and he was quickly brought from the prison after he shaved and changed his clothes he went in and stood before Pharaoh then Pharaoh said to Joseph I had a dream last night and no one here can tell me what it means but I have heard that when you hear about a dream you can interpret it verse 16 it is beyond my power to do this Joseph replied but God can tell you what it means and set you at ease so here we see that Joseph recognizes that the source of his ability to interpret dreams was not himself was not his imagination it was the Spirit of God within him therefore dream interpretation is not a technique that can be taught I believe that some things are symbolic in the Bible but to go and take these symbols and try to apply them to every single one of your dreams that can get a little confusing so rather than rely on a system rely on the spirit rather than rely on symbols and set standards for interpretation that are created by men we should rely on the voice of the Holy Spirit not even Joseph was confident in his ability to interpret dreams without the guidance of the Holy Spirit verse 17 so Pharaoh told Joseph his dream now we can actually jump down to verse 25 where Joseph says both of Pharaohs dreams mean the same thing God is telling Pharaoh in advance what he is about to do and the scripture goes on to tell how Joseph prophesied a famine and because he was able to prophesy the famine he was able to set protocols in place that saved Egypt during that famine and actually they had an abundance during the famine and people were coming from around the region to get grain from Egypt Egypt became a leader in food distribution because of the prophetic word that was delivered to Pharaoh through a dream by interpretation of a servant of God now God can reveal the future through dreams I had a dream several years ago where I was standing in a getting ready for a church service the building had a balcony the building had a floor the building had a stage the building had four walls it was an average looking building as you would see in real life and I remember looking at the chairs there was only about 20 chairs laid out on the floor in front of the stage and then as I stood there in the building looking around I suddenly saw chairs beginning to pop up all over the building as if they were sprouting out of the ground as the chairs began to sprout out of the ground the walls of the building began to expand so that it would make room for more chairs beginning to sprout up out of the ground it was actually just a few months before we started to experience crowds at our miracle services that we had never seen before now by no means does our ministry have the biggest crowds attending the miracle services but the crowds that we do have typically overflow and we're having to turn people away at almost every single ministry event in fact before the services start there's usually a line outside of the building hours before the service even starts and all of that occurred after I saw that in a dream God was speaking to me about expansion so God most certainly can reveal the future through dreams so number one God can impart through dreams number two God can reveal the future through dreams number three God can provide relevant information and mysteries in dreams Matthew chapter 2 verses 19 through 20 say this when Herod died an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt now this is Joseph Joseph and Mary not Joseph who interpreted Pharaoh's dreams verse 20 get up the angel said take the child and his mother back to the Land of Israel because those who are trying to kill the child are dead so God had warned Joseph and Mary to take Jesus outside of the region because obviously they wanted to protect his life and then the Holy Spirit spoke through a dream telling Joseph it was now safe to go back that was relevant information being communicated through a dream I've had moments where I'm falling asleep and in my sleep state suddenly revelation starts to flow sometimes I'll be working on a book and maybe I'll get stuck on a certain portion my biggest frustration when writing a book is like my goal in writing a book is to write a book or create a sermon when creating sermons this is an issue to the issue that I have is that sometimes I wonder if I'm really answering the questions that the people are going to have and in the order that they're going to have them so as I'm teaching I'm trying to anticipate what questions will be asked right after I teach a certain point my goal is that when someone reads a book or listens to one of my lessons that as the questions are popping up in their mind they're being answered in the lesson or in the book now this gets complicated because you have to take complex truths that are cross-referenced from all over the scripture and tie them together real nicely in a one to three systemized package that B can be presented and taught simply that's a challenge but as I'm following the sleep many times the Lord will give me phrases and words and thoughts that help me transition from one thought to another he'll give me scriptures and examples all while I'm asleep I'll wake up and write it down and then I'll go back to sleep and that's what God does he provides relevant information and even mysteries through dreams Daniel chapter 2 verse 28 says however there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries and he has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will take place in the latter days this was your dream and the visions in your mind well on your bed and then he goes on to prophesy and reveal the meaning of those dreams to Nebuchadnezzar but still God revealed mysteries through his dreams and this is what the Holy Spirit does while you are asleep you are in a different state of mind and in that state of mind God can speak to you in ways that he can't necessarily speak to you when you're awake of course I must emphasize here again that the Word of God is ultimately the standard the foundation the starting point for any spiritual journey but still God does speak through mysteries and God does give relevant information in dreams number four God can warn through dreams job chapter 33 verses 14 and 15 say for God speaks again and again though people do not recognize it he speaks in dreams and visions of the night when deep sleep falls on people as they lie in their beds so God speaks again and again oftentimes God will speak through recurring dreams he'll try to get through to you and sometimes people don't perceive it it's possible that God is trying to communicate a message to you through your dreams and you're just not being attentive to what God is speaking Genesis chapter 15 verses 12 to 14 tell us of how God warned Abraham of the coming enslavement of the children of Israel verse 12 as the Sun was going down Abram fell into a deep sleep and a terrifying darkness came down over him Genesis 15:13 says then the Lord said to Abram you can be sure that your descendants will be strangers in a foreign land where they will be oppressed as slaves for 400 years but I will punish the nation that enslaves them and in the end they will come away with great well now I found this interesting because though God was warning Abraham of the coming oppression of the children of Israel there was nothing that Abraham could do sometimes God will warn you just to warn you other times God will warn you to prepare you but here I want to go off on a little bit of a tangent to point out the fact that Abraham had a dream from the Lord yet still a terrifying darkness came down over him so there is a cliche that goes you know a dream is from God if you have peace in the dream that's not always the case sometimes God will send you a dream that has a warning attached to it and that warning can actually terrify you as opposed to give you peace and an example of this is what we just read in Genesis 15 now in Genesis chapter 20 verses 3 & 6 the Bible says but that night God came to Abimelech in a dream and told him you are a dead man for that woman you have taken is already married in the dream God responded yes I know you were innocent that is why I kept you from sinning against me and why I did not let you touch her so if you don't know the story Abraham told a lie because he was afraid and he told the bin maalik that basically his wife wasn't his wife so Abimelech takes abraham's wife and tries to obviously woo her and marry her and so forth but here we see God warning him and saying that's a married woman now even though Abraham did lie Abimelech was still being warned and God was still putting him on the hook but God warned him through a dream now Matthew chapter 2 verse 12 the Bible says when it was time to leave they returned to their own country by another route this is Joseph and Mary again for God had warned them in a dream not to return to Herod Matthew chapter 27 verse 19 says just then as Pilate was sitting on the judgment seat his wife sent him this message leave that innocent man alone I suffered through a terrible nightmare about him last night there again got his warning through a dream I too had a dream of warning in my dream I was lying in my bed and I woke up so in my dream I woke up but I was actually still asleep and I looked in the centre of my room and I could see forming in the center of the room this dark shadowy mist it was like a black cloud and in the midst of the black cloud I could see a mouth and two eyes the eyes stared at me the mouth was smiling as if to mock me by what I felt in the dream I knew that it was a demonic spirit so I began to rebuke that demonic spirit it didn't leave I was shocked so I continued to do what I need to do I just kept exercising my authority to vocalising a rebuke of that demonic being it wouldn't go it's just stood there smiling at me finally I said you can't be here you have to go you have no right to be here the demon mocked saying yes I do finally I asked what do you mean you have the right to be here what gives you the right the demonic spirit revealed to me that someone in my family was practicing the sin of necromancy or communication with the dead and once it told me that someone was necromancing or practicing necromancy in the family I woke up and immediately I called my grandmother I said do you know anybody in the family who's practicing necromancy because I was just warned in a dream last night that some spirit is gaining access to deceive members of our family because of what that person is doing my grandmother who kind of knew the ongoings of the family knew exactly who to call and she delivered that warning to them and thankfully because of the warning that God gave that demonic door was shut but God knew he had to talk to me because I'm a man of Prayer so he had to come to me and tell me to warn another member of my family so God does speak through dreams he warns through dreams so number one God can impart through dreams number two God can reveal the future through dreams number three God can provide relevant information and mysteries through dreams number four God can warn through dreams now the warning is different than telling the future because sometimes God is warning you about something that is presently taking place or warning you about something that you already know you shouldn't be doing so warning and predicting the future are similar but not exactly the same now Genesis chapter 40 verse eight says and they replied we both had dreams last night but no one can tell us what they mean interpreting dreams as God's business Joseph replied go ahead and tell me your dreams so again referencing Joseph as an example and this is Joseph the one who interpreted Pharaoh's dreams is from Genesis referencing him as an example we see that the interpretation of the dream is God's business in other words we cannot seek to systemize what is spiritual so be very careful about buying these books on dream interpretation and just using symbols to interpret your dream instead rely upon the principles and the truths of the word of God and rely upon the voice of the Holy Spirit now I'm not saying that there's something inherently wrong with interpreting dreams like that you may gain some biblical insight but remember everyone dreams differently and each dream should be interpret on a case-by-case situation or on a case-by-case standard so then to go and say if you dream about this symbol that means this and then apply that to everybody that's um I wouldn't say dangerous ground but I would that would definitely be an effective ground that would be an ineffective way to do it you want to make sure that instead you're receiving revelation from the Holy Spirit to interpret these dreams so how do you know if a dream is from the Lord when number one a dream is from the Lord when it comes to pass or bears fruit God is not going to send you a fruitless dream in other words you're not just gonna have a dream that strange or weird and just makes you go huh that was odd God is gonna send you a dream that reveals a message there's usually a message to the dream that God gives to you I would he give it to you he's not just going to send you a purposeless dream number two a dream is from the Lord when it's message is in harmony with the scripture God will never say anything to you in a dream that contradicts what he's spoken to you in his word now when do we need to seek out the meaning of a dream you know people receive a dream they think it was odd and then they it sticks with them they become obsessed with it can you interpret this can you interpret this I need someone to interpret this please you can be sure of this if God wants to speak to you through a dream he's gonna make it very clear and if you have trouble with that understanding then you pray about it if God does reveal the dream to you have maybe another brother or sister pray with you about it fast about it and then beyond that don't go obsessing about it because if God wants to speak to you clearly he will speak to you if God wants to get a message to you he will get a message to you now it's different if you try to avoid the voice of the Holy Spirit then of course you enter into that dangerous territory but if you're someone who submitted to the Lord living holy living a life of prayer and the word and God gives you a dream and you have trouble interpreting it it will become interpreted but again I must stress don't get lost in paranoia and fear and start obsessing about what if I missed God what if he's trying to tell me something that sometimes honestly a weird dream is just a weird dream and we need to accept that fact other times God is trying to speak to us and again if God is trying to speak to you then when you seek him out he will respond if you seek him out and there's no response you're off the hook and you can continue on with your life and maybe you don't want to dismiss the dream write it down save it and perhaps God will reveal the meaning later but again please don't obsess over these dreams there's nothing that he's going to reveal in a dream that you can't find from reading his word at least what's important now I understand there are some specific things that God reveals in dreams but still as long as you know the voice of the Holy Spirit you're safe you're gonna be fine no need to obsess over it First Samuel chapter 28 verse 6 says he asked the Lord what he should do but the Lord refused to answer him either by dreams or by sacred Lots or by the prophets that's talking of course about a disobedient man of God or a man who was disobeying God but still the principle stands if God doesn't want to answer he's not gonna answer through a certain means and we can't force him to so when it comes to dreams make yourself available to them live holy be in prayer be in the word so that you're not blocking any dreams that God wants to give to you but don't obsess over them don't let them be the purpose of your life don't let them become the one source that you have to hearing the voice of the Holy Spirit instead of rely on the word and when you rely on the word and live according to the word when God wants to speak to you clearly through a dream he will and that is it for the message I'm gonna pray now I'm gonna pray something special I want to pray that if it be the will of God that God would speak to you in a dream tonight and again we're not trying to force the hand of God here let's just ask according to his will Lord if it be your will speak to us in dreams and if not tonight maybe in the next week maybe in the next month but let's ask him let's let's at least make ourselves available and say God if you want to speak to me in a dream you can do so and we're not gonna force his hand or try to force him as if we could but we're gonna make ourselves available to that way that the Holy Spirit speaks so father in the name of Jesus we ask you Lord to speak to us first and foremost through your word let me thank you for your word and now I pray father for that one watching and receiving this that you would open them to the realms of the Spirit Lord when they lay their head down to sleep that you would begin to speak to them in the night hour and I pray God you would speak to us clearly and you would meet with us let even our dreams be fellowship with you let even our dreams be pleasing to you that even our dreams be submitted and surrendered to your will let even our dreams be a place where we can hear your voice but follow us into those dreams when we're awake we want your presence the same is true when we're asleep speak to us I pray in the mighty name of Jesus and I want you to say because you believe it say Amen well that is it for the lesson I
