she can't see and that gives us the feeling that any girl could be the special girl if someone just looks at her right moreover part of what's special about anna is that because she's not like those perfect icy women she sees something in christian right away that others don't perhaps your heart might be a bit bigger than you want to let on there's some people who say that i don't have a heart at all which in turn makes him more curious about her i would like to know more about you and throughout the story she doesn't simply defer to his looks and power but challenges him to be the best person he can be in recent years more voices have found a lot that's toxic in christian grey or some of these other special guys romantic behavior it's christian he's here um in georgia oh here he what are you doing here christian i came to see you but in reality many guys who make a big performance over the special girl aren't head over heels edwards or christians and actually have more sinister flying a red flag and the third toxic special girl tactic is isolating her perhaps making her feel it's them too against the world and attempting to sever her connections with friends and family so she has no support if his behavior starts to become more alarming or threatening this is what he does he tries to isolate me and he tries to get me alone the three tenets of toxic special girl creation are ordinarily performed by narcissists the kind of men who want to be with the most special girl and in some of the stories we see on screen the men that create special girls are predatory think monroe in diary of a teenage girl connor and fish tank or david in an education it's a special day she's a special girl with these often married men it's a repeated pattern where they shower young girls with attention making them feel like they're experiencing a special life-changing attraction when the reality is there's no future there and these girls are just vulnerable children god you're a child you didn't know about any of this presumably no i never do because of the toxic reasons a man might try to create a special girl sometimes her story is a sad one in big little lie celeste's husband perry swings dramatically between treating her like the most amazing woman on earth and then abusing her he treats me like a goddess when he's not hurting you and for a long time she clings to the idea that he's planted in her that she's special and she can fix him i kept saying come on celeste you can do it he's gonna change taylor swift's all too well 10 minute version describes girl narrative three words eight letters say it and i'm yours i in the carrie big relationship in sex in the city carrie is made to feel less than not worthy of ending up with the man she loves for years and his unattainability makes her want him even more she fixates on natasha big superficially perfect second wife believing that natasha is the special girl due to her beauty poise and youth she's shiny haired style section vera wang and i'm you know the sex column they run next to ads for penile implants yet big cheats on natasha with carrie reinforcing carrie's special power over him and eventually after years she is triumphant landing this man who has really never made her feel good enough only then is she the special girl carrie you're the one meanwhile if one partner puts the other on a pedestal as a special girl that can also make it hard to have a natural relationship sex in the city has a great example of this in charlotte and trey in trey's eyes charlotte is such a perfect wife and future mother ideal that in an illustration of the madonna complex he can't have sex with her trey sees you as his virginal wife not a sexual play thing today we're entering an era where young women are pushing back more against the faux special smooth-talking ott boy and all the love-bombing tools in his arsenal in olivia rodrigo's song deja vu she speaks to her ex's new girl in lyrics like i bet she's bragging to all her friends saying you're so unique so when are you gonna tell her that we did that too she thinks it's special but it's all reused rhetoric like this calling out the guy who uses the same special techniques on every woman he meets can help all women get a little savvier about recognizing canned cliched plays and instead seek out guys who want to form a genuine connection with them for them alongside the special girl loved by a man trope we've also seen the rise of the special girl story where she gets to be the central self-defined hero in films like the hunger games and shows like buffy the vampire slayer both katniss and buffy are strong resilient heroes in their stories before they fall in love i volunteer as tribute one girl in all the world a chosen one one born with a strength and skill to hunt the vampires these stories provide a breakthrough for the special girl as in their case love isn't actually what makes them special you're a hell of a woman it feels more explicitly like any guy in her life is just lucky to be there and play a supporting role [Music] the special girl trope can be toxic but that doesn't mean we aren't special especially in the eyes of those who love us carrie i know what i look like then you can't see what i see i'm not a model then you can't see what i see when a relationship is genuine and
