[Applause] [Music] atari these are all shaped like cds by cds i meant dreamcast games it was christmas of the year 2000 y2k oh hey pluto you want some christmas go get it yourself back in those days i was living the sega dream while the rest of the world played with their furbies is it shut up signed up oh the new millennium hadn't zapped our electronics in fact all of our video game consoles were fully operational and still in regular rotation but one in particular was played the sega dreamcast offered up a new gaming experience for every letter of the alphabet it even had a new sonic game something the sega sat or never could muster manny is dream casting out yes sir it was not just a new year it was a new millennium and in the year 2000 it kind of looked like sega had hit a home run and he got a base hit that's right base hit baby sega was back the dreamcast was selling well winning back the fans who were let down by the saturn and gaining new ones in the process but with the release of the sony playstation 2 around the corner the dreamcast needed a hit yes something for the 2000 holiday season that would be a system seller something every sega fan could get behind enter shenmue [Music] produced by sega's flagship am2 arcade division shenmue was the love child of sega and their arguably most successful game designer yu suzuki with shenmue suzuki set out on a george lucas-like quest to make the most cinematic and expensive video game of all time i remember going to the movies that summer of 2000 and in the place of your standard movie trailer was a trailer for a video game a pitch black knight unfolds with the morning star as its only light a video game advertised alongside blockbuster films dad and i had never seen anything like it and that's because there had never been anything quite like shenmue by christmas there was no other gift i wanted more okie dokie let's see the presents here i knew i was getting it i had to be question was which of the gifts wrapped under my tree contained the great sega pope any time we'll settle with our atari jaguar cd cranking out the christmas tunes i began to open my presents all right where you got going [Music] cheap tricky radio what is it jake ride radio whoa thank you from the list score jet grind radio now we're talking dreamcast action baby one of the greatest dreamcast games ever released oozing with cell shaded style this game was a highlight of christmas two thousand off to a good start with the promise of more dreamcast to come [Music] tony hawk tony hawk another skating game [Music] well i did mention it was the year 2000 these types of games were all the rage back then and while i loved getting tony hawk the idea that shenmue was still sitting underneath my tree urged me forward austria what it starts with wait a second that's not a dreamcast game it was conspiracy of one by the offspring when i was 14 the offspring was my favorite band and if it weren't for crazy taxi on the sega dreamcast i don't think i ever would have gotten into them merry christmas christmas continued i got a lot of games that year including many for the dreamcast that's right i forgot to wrap it i bought so many games and stuff i forgot merry christmas [Music] my buddy from middle school drew he got me metallica's master of puppets metallica and even dad opened up a few gifts from me it's so subtle it's fantastic thank you tyler that was a great gift but it wasn't until i opened up one of my last presents that year that shenmue finally became mine [Music] not just shenmue you know how tough it was to get that one look what it says on it limited edition includes original soundtrack that is not seen anywhere how did you hear about it it's a long long story it started with i found out that only if you all pre-ordered from sega.com will you get this version and i pre-ordered it remember i was mad that day at sega all right guys get ready dad is about to rant they sent me an email that day saying we don't have any of the special editions we're going to send to the regular one and i was furious i got on the phone i tried calling them that saturday i said you got a lot of nerve i pre-ordered it you guaranteed me they said we don't have any they're they're hard to find wow you're not gonna ask me how i got it i called babbages in the mall and uh they said they had them and it was weird stories they said they had all of them the ones they had they had like six or seven of them and i'm like going crazy like what is sega telling me they don't they only exist what are they sending babbages all these for so i go down to beverages to get it and the guy has six or seven of them there and it's the regular one you know you were waiting to get it and i say i just i called and you're holding me one yeah but it's a special edition y'all to me they're all the special editions he tells me i said no they're not they're all the regular one so the manager comes over and goes what's the problem i said i called and you said you're holding me a special limited edition shows they're all limited editions i said no they're not she says yes they are i said it says limited edition on the limited edition one she goes well they do don't they and she looks because they don't that's funny the one we put out on the floor does it turns out the one they put on the floor to put up on the wall for people to look at it was the limited edition they got one and she thought they all a limited edition because the one she pulled out said that the rest she only got one out of the 50 they got in oh and she i said well i want this one and she gave it to me she said i didn't even know i thought they were all limited editions it's funny hearing dad go off on babbages like this for in less than five years i too would be working video game retail but that's a story for another time it turns out i called sega back sega said they're the hardest thing to find they underestimated how many they needed that they they they don't have any oh wow that's gonna be a treasure and every time we go to the stores remember i've always been looking i've never seen a limited edition we got that by accident from babbages see limited edition open it up this my friends was what i had been waiting for the christmas 2000 mvp shenmue only thing left to do now was boot up the game find some sailors and avenge my father's death wow well enjoy the masterpiece game ever made the biggest masterpiece ever made getting ready for a big adventure 1996 86 saturday i think we've seen the gamut of games today [Music] this is a game [Music] this is all made as a game it's not a cinema you're looking at dreamcast's game where's fuchsia he's been in the dojo all day all day yes i suppose sure [Music] came out of nowhere i see thanks fukusan tell me why what you gonna do i'll go to play space hurry ryosan where are you going you're not going after them please don't look what they did to hazuki sensei they killed my father right in front of me i will have my revenge i need to do this for my father i was locked and shenmue was loaded in my dreamcast this was sega's cinematic masterpiece and even if it took me till new year's i was going to complete it tyler has been playing shenmue for a week now literally one week maybe a little over a week it's new year's day january 1st 2001 and he's beating the end of shenmue right now at least he's trying this game is on three disca disc set it's been an incredible story [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] i did it i beat shenmue unbelievable huh and so ends of christmas oh my god how much long can i start to speak thank you very much [Music] [Music] it was only a week's long journey but by the end of the game i felt like i'd known these characters and places all my life shenmue wasn't the system seller sega needed it to be the dreamcast in a bizarre turn of events wouldn't be around much longer sega pulled the plug in 2001 but christmas 2000 was all about what was happening right now and in this moment i had shenmue and it was one of the greatest gaming experiences of my life well tyler did it he beat shenmue on new year's day 2001. you did it though merry christmas tyler that wraps up our christmas tape the extended edition the shenmue win yeah we weren't even dreaming about the future we were living it with the dreamcast and it wasn't just me that sega was making an impact on news flash mikey just called saying he got a dream cast for christmas they're going to set up the dreamcast now and play it all night shenmue was a lot of things for a lot of people it was the most expensive ambitious game of its time it became the most infamous in the legacy of its creator you suzuki and for me well let's just say i was heartbroken when sega stopped supporting the dreamcast and when they canceled the release of shenmue ii here in the states it was devastating [Music] but to dream is to hope and christmas is the season of perpetual hope [Laughter] shenmue two oh cool this is awesome oh man look at that box set oh man tyler this is this pushes the dreamcast to the limits they say that this is like where the dreamcast nobody got to see what the dreamcast can actually do this game does it that is so the last great game made for the sega dreamcast never out in america until it comes on xbox next year but this is the european set from europe look at that two disks well four disks i think two sets in english because it's made for england [Music] unreal in english in english not dubs no
