The Scene That Changed The Incredibles...

than a directly disney film but that's off topic today we're covering the scene that changed the incredibles the absolute pinnacle from one of pixar's absolute pinnacles the incredibles is regarded as a cult classic film of one of the best easily elevated as much more than just a good film with endlessly quotable and well produced scenes but which one's the best and why is it so good how did it ascend the movie from a great movie into a masterpiece let's find out it all and more let's begin now there are many many scenes that could be construed as the best in the film if you asked kid me i'd probably say it was the hundred mile dash living out my peak childhood fantasy of sprinting unshackled or maybe the jack jack reveal that had me coming back in cinemas multiple times to see the commentary about rewarding mediocrity was a surprise hit later on very daring that they casted two sonics for that scene huh i can't believe you don't want to go to your own son's graduation it's not a graduation he is moving from the fourth grade to the fifth grade but then there's the moments with all the iconic lines no capes where's my super suit and god busy the confrontations the family connections the creative use of powers the scene that awoke something in me but no the one we're going with today is genuinely the most emotive scene in the movie the darkest moment that admittedly has become a bit of a meme in its entirety it's the moment that mr incredible discovers all of his super friends have become exterminated one by one and the world he knew of is officially gone to the wrath of this megalomaniac we actually start with mr incredible for quite a while before that iconic room sticking with him as he goes on this mission first gaining access through those transport pods then crossing borders with this great reveal [Music] and sneaking further in throwing stones dodging sights and eventually reaching this lava office up to this point he's been coasting through the barriers with a little luck on his side too but this is his first puzzle he can't just rush his way through this one and look at this shot really highlighting the scale of how out of his depth he is being plunged so deep into enemy territory but as an experienced hero he doesn't take long to come to his conclusion of using the easter island head statues as the shield to block the flowing lava not sure how logical that is but whatever no dialogue but damn does the music sink you into the sneaky vibes of the scene and it's pretty clear what he's up to and having such a large item only highlights his super strength more change of plans this micro twist is perfectly timed as we've just gotten comfortable with this almost asmr style escapade only to be blasted with this loud lava waterfall opening not to mention we've just seen how heavy and mighty this object is even for mr incredible so you feel that awkward redirection needed as mr incredible tries to return out of sight [Music] classic this is basic theater but always satisfying to see play out well and with animation you can time it absolutely perfectly but now mr incredible can rush in oh i've seen ice age before hopefully we don't leave it that close damn again with that swanky spy music with what's essentially an animated album cover this is a fantastic example of just great cinematography and composing coming together a real successful love letter to those 1960s spy movies this film is taking inspiration from i totally see what people wean when they say pixar movies belong in the cinema this is top top the rest of the video and as we cut to black we open up for the next visual cue it's not time for a scene with someone else it's still mr incredible first the floor lights up one by one slowly showing a single path to illuminate a control panel with a single spotlight dramatic dynamic and 100 pushing your eyes to follow a certain direction which to be fair is cinematography 101 anyway syndrome really is one for presentation it seems and so as mr incredibles walks calmly towards the center we too start to relax in this obviously empty dark room he sits down with a click and a notably echoey reverb on it the screen lights up the maximum size possible it seems look how small bob is over there the events that are about to unfold show how large a scale this situation is far greater than mr incredible's personal desires ever the puzzle master he gets the password right straight away thanks to a little help from his recently dead friend and with a smirk on his face he's in all the while helen has been doing something just before mr incredible's first appearance on that cliff overlooking those transport pods we saw helen over with edna mode who had been enthusiastically showing up all sorts of super suits for the whole family but with helen's reservations a question was asked to where he here of course do you know where he is and now the payoff is finally coming back around as now we see her again at the back of this frame here calling up insurer care the job bob worked at originally interesting that the composition here has to focus on edna more than anything else blurred a little sure but i guess her being far more knowing is what holds the dominance in his frame contently sipping her tea with a little smile on her face and then helen is given the bombshell information we all knew my records say his employment was terminated almost two months ago in her mind she's just coming to the reality that bob is off doing his own thing and then we cut to bob again this technique is known as cross cutting it's the act of switching back and forth between two scenes to imply they're happening at the same time because here they are just as mr incredible is reaching the height of his mission gaining all the information beyond the fake assignment he was originally given helen is now in the know but it could be a hero thing or it could be a cheating thing too in her mind still mr incredible is now reading all the exposition or i guess he got tired after island operations and just wants to jump to the supers yeah he's a fighter not a reader he's certainly got a more stern look on his face now and then here it is a full documentation of every superhero who's come to the island and how they've been used as a tool to upgrade beyond the droid to the point that it can defeat them first six supers each used to form on the droid version x2 every upgrade comes every three supers clearly it trounces most of them be them telekinetic supersonic or pyrotechnic meanwhile the camera slowly pulls back as we see more of the scale of the screen and the scale of the situation and since we're halfway in let me just tell you real quick that we'll be extending this helen and she's dejected putting down the phone as edna looks across the frame back to incredible again seven supers down eight nine the omnidroid growing more limbs and more direction as the powers of gravity and seismic waves are taken down this isn't the end of it and mr incredible knows it the camera's now static the full scope unfolding and like it's been going on a while and you know what's really bolstering up this scene so far the sounds every tick of a termination is the same little ring buzz be it for droids or supers it's almost rhythmic as if the full weight of a loss of superhuman life becomes liquefied into a minuscule notification seemingly growing faster and less impactful with each new buzz and then there's of course the soundtrack underneath perfectly encapsulating underneath this growing tone of severity first it's just a few unheard of supers but then the scale increases the so-called threat level boosts up as the omnidroid gains more strength to take them on 10 11 12 and more we don't visually see early on we observed the full scale of the scene with an itty bitty bob completely out of his depth with this composition but now it's personal right up close to his face as he sees the icons of his beloved past friends flash into death before his eyes we don't even need to see all the analytics anymore you can see enough through the shock in his expression and the flashes of white on his face the beat of the rhythm just continues until we see those we recognize gazer beam the man who was seen as missing near the start of this movie and left as a skeleton down in the caves officially terminated 13 14 15 the flashes continue as incredible holds his face in his hands and the music only continues to rise through its slow crescendo cross-cut to edna mode who comes to helen with a proposition all it is is a tracker but how do you present that how's about a dolly zoom with such distance between your actors physically making helen larger in the frame to show how enticed she is to being given this compromise that can solve her newly discovered conundrum would you like to find out at this point bob is hunting through the search options we've seen 15 supers on screen confirmed as terminated but there's likely all sorts of more information implied through the rhythm or the changing droid design i count a total of about 22 supers with more possible from when we're not with mr incredible plus there's the whole stalking element of this operation syndrome has to know who all these people are through their secret identities to lure them onto the island he searches elastigirl thankfully unknown to syndrome on location as of now a hint of relief amongst this dire realization and then he searches for frozone [Music] it's known they kind of skim over this but if you're paying attention you'd know that frozone was the very next target when mirage first appears on screen she's not looking for mr incredible he's not alone the fat guy's still with him she's stalking frozone and it just happened to be blind luck that they found mr incredible for the first time which is why they switch their whole plan of operations here to focus on him after all when it comes to syndrome i am your biggest fan and so after witnessing the whole building on fire scene earlier mirage makes that call to switch over verify you want to switch targets over trust me this is the one he's been looking for but anyway back to mr incredible as a final thing he searches himself to find he successfully faked his death and is seen as terminated edna gives helen the device just as mr incredible observes the final rendition of the on the droid version 10 the soundtrack reaches its crescendo on the news of the final attack flying the droid onto metroville and destroying the town in just 8 hours zooming in subtly as the news gets more important and mr incredible is driven into action he stands from his chair as we zoom closer to that final timer and he runs out of the frame silhouetted as this is no longer a personal problem it's a national one but it's something he can make a difference of and so we are zoomed in close it's not about where he goes we don't need to see that it's just the fact that he is going and he's running out of time and right on that note [Music] bam this isn't a dark empty room it is full to the brim with illumination now like being captured by the authorities or exposed in some interrogation room it's uncomfortably bright and fortified with hundreds of cannons look at all of them the music is at its active height and you can barely hear it amongst all the alarms and drama of this moment and this is a great example of demonstrating to the audience how these weapons work a demo test of what is to come for us all to see before it happens they're sticky inflate and a problem time to run and as he does he trips worst case scenario we get shots of three of the cannons shots of his fool from this angle very very briefly as well as this one the cannons again eight of them overwhelming we see him struggle on the ground the cannons two of them getting closer now his face as the drama picks up so do the shots growing nearer and nearer to the subjects two cannons his face his perspective we see what's going on in his mind just a straight line out of there just gotta blaze through his face again as he expresses the sheer direness of his scenario right now but he goes for it now with a wider shot but more handheld in quality as the camera turns a little shaky only adding to the moment more we're all feeling a little shaky at this point the music getting faster and faster more repetitive as it all increases but we're on the move so it's time for a change of cinematic pace as mr incredible covers distance so too do the cannon shots scrolling along with him as we see there's plenty more cannons awaiting him at each meter progressed the shots are hitting as we see mr incredible power through but the cannons just keep firing and now the motion has slowed the cannons are winning this wide profile shot shows mr incredibles progress but also how it stops scrolling across the frame as he falls to the ground cutting to those cannons ever present first there's lows then getting closer until it's just one as he stopped in his tracks the cutaway is getting faster and faster he slowly stands while the cannon shots continue faster still all-time group shots single shot constant as mr incredible fight just to stand up and let out from within his constraints but it's over the cannons were too much and bob is defeated completely swarmed he looks up and we see from his perspective mirage coming closer completely tilted from incredibles awkwardly forced posture and that inflating glue only engulfing more of the screen and his view ending on a hand on the hip and audio muffling away wow i chose the scene because of the emotive weight of just the concept of all of the super deaths and how dark that really is for a kids movie but that final action scene i forgot how damn perfect that last action scene was how it comes in phases depending on if mr incredible is in motion or he isn't powering through several times and yet still losing in this whole scene is just phenomenal this is the power of a true filmmaker's eye and the heavyweight team that is behind it everything is there fantastic direction cinematography composing obviously storytelling both full scale within the movie and just in this scene the lighting department and unique setting of this room sure this scene in this movie has kind of been mean to death but it comes from a place of admiration this scene is just so dramatic and memorable that people have adapted it into other forms and maybe that's one of the best compliments you can give a film in this modern day or maybe it's not that deep either way i could watch this movie a million more times than i already have in my lifetime this is how you do a brilliant scene one that truly elevates this production into some of the best there is period now if only oh if only they could translate that to incredibles 2. but that's a video for another time for
