if you love anime you'll know that sometimes there are characters you're a fan of who simply don't get the credit they deserve so before this video is over my goal is to convince you one of the best villains that doesn't get enough recognition is Kai chiiki AKA overhaul and to do it I'm going to shut down one of the biggest complaints about his character while showing what makes him different there is no single formula for creating a great villain with that said typically in anime you want to see dep so someone who is a legitimate threat great fights and an impact on the characters and story going forward if we want to get into the depth of his character first we have to understand his character and there's a lot to get into he has religious influences he draws inspiration from American Comics however the first thing that stands out about him for me is that he's written both consistently and paradoxical which is something you also see in characters like younger uro or zerif at his core chisaki believed everyone is beneath him every belief he holds and all of his actions stem from this as someone who came from living off the streets it makes sense that he's a germaphobe he doesn't like dust he gets annoyed when shigaraki puts his feet up on the table to put it simply he can't stand filth which is why the plague mask makes sense you see on numerous occasions that his normally calm demeanor breaks when he's touched it's not only dirt or dust that's filth but humans especially those with with quirks he wears the plague mask out of arrogance as well he doesn't want to even share the same air others breathe and you see how each time he gets touched he grows more and more agitated the same goes for when people call him by his name and look chisaki is an intelligent guy you have to be to do the things that he does he's the head of the shihai aai he's the one who's been experimenting on Airy and devised the entire Quirk arer bullet plan he's usually calm composed and analytical when he meets with the league of villain he correctly assesses that they lack Direction a goal without a plan is a wish when the confrontation begins with them he already had a plan B and the eight bullets were waiting when he initially bumps into deu and lilon on the streets he instantly starts asking probing questions to gain Intel on them when the heroes break into his facility with only minutes heads up he gets his men to create diversions to buy him time to escape when he's fighting lamillion he's constantly targeting ay because he realizes that's his best chance at winning in that same fight he heals krono during a distraction even when deu first shows up he instantly deduces that Deku is all about strength and speed and then he's able to predict deku's movements what I like about chiaki's intelligence though is that his smart as he is he's not as smart as he thinks he is and it constantly gets the best of him he's basically the personification of the dunin Krueger effect his negotiation with the league of villains and working with them didn't help him at all and they're very very predictable betrayal directly led to the hero's catching up to him which wouldn't have even mattered if he had any sense of urgency the entire hero raid he's casually walking away because he's so overconfident in himself and his plan he even tells Murio when he shows up you shouldn't have got here so quickly one of the most telling lines that showcases his ego is when he's fighting deu and screams why doesn't anyone see the big picture he's so sure that he and he alone is right he's willing to abandon his Humanity to achieve his goals it may be unpleasant but in his mind it's necessary he truly wants to overhaul the world and he abandons his name like Humanity in favor of his Quirk to do so like I will for the rest of this video that takes us to the contradictory parts of the character overhaul was taken in by his master when he had nothing all he wants to do is repay that man for his kindness with the sheii ayi standing diminishing he decides he wants to restore them to their former glory so how does he do that by tossing aside everything the Shai stood for in the first place when his master says he's going too far and in danger of losing his Humanity overhaul doesn't understand ay represents change why can't the old man see it he'll do anything to repay his master even if he has to take out his master to do it overhaul extends the same kindness and sense of belonging that the boss did to him which is how the eight bullets of the hakai form they're Thugs and lunatics but he gives them purpose and in return that brings him complete loyalty and side note it's really cool that the eight bullets are the anti- eight precepts of Buddhism with each member's mindset and ability being the opposite of a precept and then overhaul playing the role of kind of an anti- Buddha it's always sweet to see historical and religious meaning behind actions and it simply adds another layer of depth to these characters anyway while the eight bullets have undying loyalty to overhaul he doesn't bat an eye at them dying you see that early on when he asks shigaraki to play shogi with him and then he describes that game as one of essentially just controlling other pieces as long as he and the boss are fine it doesn't matter kindness saved him but he responds with violence and with that you can see how black mask played a role in inspiring his character when one of his men accidentally let Ary go he kills him without a second thought at no point does it cross his mind that torturing ay is an awful thing to do to him she's a lab rat that needs to serve a purpose despite the fact that she's the granddaughter of the only person he cares about it's such an interesting Dynamic where this sociopath places no value on Humanity but was saved by it and in trying to repay it abandons it and even so we see moments where he clearly has some before the raid begins he makes sure to stop by and apologize to the boss he doesn't treat his childhood friend krono like the other eight bullets and when we see him with neant later on all he wants is to apologize to the boss again his ability to compartmentalize torturing a child while he simultaneously idolizes that same child's grandfather is fascinating to me then you get into his plan he views quirks as an illness of the Mind a plague if you will quirks encourage heroism and villainy he despises both so how does he choose to combat this he uses his Quirk to manipulate AR's Quirk to create bullets that get rid of quirks contradictions Galore but that's what makes them interesting in terms terms of being a legitimate threat I don't think there's any question he clears that bar overhaul has one of the coolest and most overpowered quirks in the series the ability to break matter down and build it back up instantly is ridiculously hard to deal with because of how diverse it is on top of being able to control the surrounding area he can repair himself and fuse with others to make him even more powerful when he fuses with neodo for example he's able to acquire his Quirk which he uses to intimidate Airy to returning to him and the cruelty he shows her and others around him makes him all the more dangerous especially because of the lengths he'll go to achieve his vision this guy casts aside henchmen without a second thought and can instantly explode anyone he touches he puts the one person he admires in a coma and again tortures a little girl which goes beyond physical means yes he literally tears her body apart to create bullets and then repairs it when as he says she needs a reset but he emotionally damages her as well there's aason reason we get an entire Arc centered around her smiling for the first time her Quirk accidentally rewound her father into nothing and overall has no qualms about reminding her of that and making her believe she's cursed remember she doesn't even know what her Quirk is he simply makes her believe that something is wrong with her and she's not deserving of anything when she bumps into deu and lilon all he has to do is flash his hand reaching for the glove on his wrist and she immediately complies and the cruelty here is noteworthy because while he's a complex character he is not a sympathetic one and a lot of times anime goes too far out of their way to redeem their villains that's not the case here but when he fuses with Ria his exterior finally matches his interior a monstrosity with parts of a small man at his core let's talk about impact the obvious one is Airy a girl who will be dealing with the trauma he forced her to endure for her entire life but there's a lot more to talk about I've heard some complains about overhaul only killing one character as a reason he's not a great villain and I'm sorry RDC that argument doesn't fly for me let's contextualize this he directly engages with four of the hundred something raiding Heroes night ey lilon eraser head and deu night ey is the one who dies and he was all might's former sidekick so obviously that left a lasting impact but also the fact that deu succeeded where lamillion could not allowed him to die in peace knowing that one for all was in good hands deu was the one who smashed the future and proved he was a worthy successor I also don't think enough people talk about this part overhaul fought night eye and won he beat the guy with foresight in a fight is that not impressive Murio gets his abilities taken away outside of death there isn't much more impact you can have on a hero there wasn't a huge need to kill him either because without his Quirk he was no longer a threat despite the fact that he continued to fight for a little while that's also something that leaves an impact on night ey before he dies deu and obviously Murio now they do use Airy to restore his abilities a few seasons later and I did think they did that too quickly but that's not really something you can hold against overhaul that's a writing issue eraser head is instantly incapacitated in the fight with overhaul and then briefly kidnapped overhaul specifically did not want him dead because he could use a Racer's Quirk and study that further to achieve his goals so overhauls role here was a success not only only that but it was his Quirk eraser bullet that ends up costing aaser his leg in season six then finally there's deu deu does defeat overhaul but only because he has AR's human Mulligan ability to restore his injuries her rewind also allows him to use 100% of one forall continuously something he couldn't do before and hasn't done since so who is overhaul supposed to kill of those four he killed one removed one's power kidnapped another that he could have killed but had a legitimate reason not to and then lost to the main character who had overpowered help and remember he did all of this against a raid that he had minutes heads up to deal with his men were completely outnumbered and they needed night ey's foresight to even find the entrance to his underground base where night I had already partially mapped it out with any sort of preparation this is a completely different scenario we can also talk about the mental anguish he put on these guys through when they find out what he's doing midorya and Murio are beside themselves at letting Ary slip away and when he eventually drops that horrifying line I don't have any children that kind of sets the stage for her to eventually gain a family later on the impact on Ary is clear the impact on Murio is clear now the way they cucked him out at the end to shigaraki and how little the bullets come into play going forward in the story those are valid complaints I wish they would have treated overhaul like stain in that regard and make him have a bigger societal impact but on those he dealt with intimately he deeply affected all of them lastly the overhaul fights are awesome visually his Quirk lends itself to beautiful looking fights but it goes far beyond that watching Murio sacrifice his Quirk to save a girl he believes he already should have saved is compelling stuff especially because it's what overhaul wanted from the start and even though Murio is more powerful and a perfect matchup to take him on overhaul manipulates him into a no- win situation fight withu literally left me in awe it's the first anime fight I can vividly remember tearing up for when Ary leaps into deku's arms with might you playing in the background right in the fields man so much emotion was building up to that moment for all parties involved and it was handled so well even the give her back line is just screamed with such intensity I'll never forget it oh and then we get to see Deku go Super Saiyan and become one punch man in the same fight to the point that when we see him deliver that finishing Blow from overhauls perspective he literally sees Deku as a demon anyway overhaul doesn't get enough credit for how interesting and awesome he was as a villain I hope after watching this you agree
