The 4 Best Padlocks by Level of Security - Locksmith Recommended

are you looking to secure something with a padlock bicycle side gate commercial property what makes a good padlock today we're going to talk about our four favorite from the low end all the way to the highest security i'm robert with acme locksmith and you're watching locksmith recommended so there's basically three features you want to be considering when you're looking at a padlock one of them is the overall weight if you have two padlocks that are virtually identical in size go with the one that's heavier because that's going to be built with the better materials the other thing you want to be looking at is the shackle of the padlock what is the diameter of that shackle what is that shackle made out of and whether or not it has any special features to protect somebody from cutting it and then the last thing you might want to be looking at is whether or not that shackle has a shackle guard on it the shackle guard is an extra device on the padlock to make sure that it can't be cut through so that somebody can get to the shackle and compromise your lock there are some other minor things that you might want to consider whether or not it's a high restricted keyway but we consider those three things the most important when you're looking at padlocks all right let's talk about the low end of padlocks first you just want to keep honest people honest you want to make sure they don't walk away with your bicycle or you want to make sure that your side gate isn't breached okay for that just that standard master laminated padlock is probably going to do very well for you you want to make sure to get the commercial version of the lock with the commercial version you get better drill resistance you get a hardened steel shackle and you also get a shackle that locks within the lock on both sides of the post so again master lock inexpensive keep honest people honest great way to go just make sure you get that commercial version sticking right along that same level of security we also like this abus padlock now the reason we like the abyss padlock here is because this padlock can be keyed up to your existing house key so if you're securing something like a side gate or shed in the backyard you only need one key for both your house and the padlock and you won't be out looking around for where the heck is that padlock key not a super high security lock it's a decent padlock it's made really well but that ease of use feature gets at our recommendation the only thing you want to make sure when you order this padlock is that you order it with the keyway that's installed in your home so i'll put a link to both the kwikset and the schlage keyways down below and you just get the one that matches your house take it into a locksmith once you have it and they'll key it up to your house key so now we're going to move up one level of security with this master lock padlock i really like this master lock padlock because it has a feature of the shackle that the other ones we've talked about so far don't have and that is it's shaped like a hexagon so there are flat sides to it instead of being entirely rounded the advantage there is if you're trying to cut this with a pair of bolt cutters or something like that it distributes the force of those cutters against a bigger area which makes it more difficult to cut the other thing we like about this is the combination so if you don't want to keep track of keys this combination is very useful so that you can lock things up without having to need a key and it also comes with a little weather protector there now this lock comes in a version that's even beefier that has a shackle guard this is the one that we actually recommend that our customers use in some cases you can't use a shackle guard because you're trying to get it through something that requires the length of that shackle but if you can get it with the shackle guard we highly recommend it because that really beefs up the integrity of this lock significantly so now i want to move on to something a little more high security if you have something with a lot of value you're trying to protect you don't want to use the locks that we were just talking about they're good but they're not great so if you've got a commercial property and you really want to secure something you want to use a padlock like this now this is the rock by abyss listen to this that is a three pound lock with a half inch hardened steel collar this thing is as beefy as it gets and we love it now the main consideration with this the locks are going to give you the security you want but if you're using one of those cheap chains that you're getting from like a home store they're not going to give you the security you want so if you're going with something beefy high security like that abus rock you want to make sure that you get a chain that's going to be as strong as the lock itself and this is another product by avis this is a half inch or three i think this one's the 3 8 inch chain but this thing has a not only hardened steel but also has a zinc coating to prevent it from rusting this will last a lifetime and if you're going to go high security don't skip on the chain i'll put a link to these things down below as well right now the last padlock i want to cover for you uh our favorite high security padlock this is a padlock by a company called multi-lock now this is the padlock that i use to secure my property at my business now multi-lock padlock comes with a hard and steel body hard hardened steel collar and hardened steel shackle guard which makes it very difficult to get to but more importantly it comes with a high security restricted keyway now if you look at this key it's probably not like any queue you've ever seen before your employees can't make copies of this key take it into a big box store and get duplicates made this has a slew of security features that make it nearly impossible to pick nearly impossible to bump and very very difficult to drill so if you want to go to the highest and high security multi-lock makes a variety of products i'll link to some of those products below for you but
